Ahmedabad’s Ramdevnagar houses a huge settlement/ghetto of Bawri community, most of whom are daily wage-earning labourers. 

Their houses are scant of food supplies and essentials, their small children are hungry. 

“Ben, can we have some grains?” Neniben Bawri was crying while asking me for help.

 The government is working a war footing to save millions of Indians, their efforts need to be saluted and call for huge appreciations.  

 I understand there are many families willing to help poor and deprived families around them,  but are unable to step out of their homes. Also, most do not have enough supply at home. The government’s PDS/Ration shops serve as an excellent platform to distribute grains to the poor. We request the government to activate the food grain distribution through these stores. The officials have told us that these stores will be functional from 1st April, which means  still a week to go. The daily wage earning families cannot sustain themselves without food for so long 

Officials from Rajkot requested a list of settlements from us to arrange for distribution of grains to these families. I hope other districts carry similar operations. 

I request farmers to share grains from their stockpile at home with the poor families in their villages. It is ok if you will send less milk to the dairy, please make buttermilk from it and give it to the needy families in your village who are in severe need of food. 

Let us all help each other overcome this unprecedented crisis on human race. Our empathy will help 21 days seem shorter for these extremely poor sections of our country. 

Let us follow our Prime Minister appeal to be concerned for others as well. 

I request you all to provide warmth and support to those in need!!

અમદાવાદના રામદેવનગરમાં બાવરી પરિવારોની મોટી વસતિ છે.

અહીં રહેનારા મોટાભાગના રોજનુંલાવીને રોજ ખાનારા..

ઘરમાં અનાજ નથી. મરચુ અને હળદર છે. નાના છોકરાં ભૂખ્યા છે.. બેન અનાજ મળે... આટલું બોલતા બોલતા નેનીબહેન બાવરી રડી ગયા..

સરકાર અત્યારે ભારતવાસીઓ માટે ખડે પગે છે. સરકારની આ કામગીરીને હું બિરદાવું છું તેમને સલામ કરુ છું..

ગરીબ અને તકવંચિતોને અમારા જેવા ઘણા મદદ કરવા ઈચ્છે છે પણ અમે બહાર નીકળી શકતા નથી. વળી અનાજનો પુરતો જથ્થો અમારી પાસે પણ નથી.

સરકારની સસ્તા અનાજની દુકાનોમાંથી આવા તકવંચિતોને રાશન આપવાની વ્યવસ્થા ઉત્તમ છે.. એ વ્યવસ્થા ઝડપથી સક્રિય કરીને સૌને રાશન આપવા વિનંતી.

1 લી એપ્રિલથી આ વ્યવસ્થા સક્રિય કરવાનું અધિકારી કહે છે પણ 1 લી એપ્રિલને હજુ છ દિવસ બાકી છે.

રાજકોટમાં અધિકારી ગણે જેમ અમારી પાસે વસાહતોની યાદી માંગી અને તેમણે અનાજ પહોંચાડવાની વ્યવસ્થા કરી દેશે તેમ કહ્યું તેમ અન્ય જિલ્લામાં થાય તેમ કરવા વિનંતી...

ગામડાંઓમાં ખેડૂતો પોતાના ઘરમાં ભરેલા ધાનમાંથી થોડું થોડું તમારા ગામમાં રહેતા આવા વંચિતોને આપજો. દૂધ ડેરીમાં ના ભરાય તો ચાલશે છાસ કરીને અનાજ સાથે છાસ પણ આપજો..

આવું કરશું તો 21 દિવસ તો ફડાકામાં નીકળી જશે..

આપણા વડાપ્રધાનની અપીલને આપણે માનીએ અને સૌની ચિંતા કરીએ..

“The government sunk borewell in our village for water supply to neighbouring towns of Radhanpur and Santalpur. Now that the Narmada waters reached us and the borewells have fallen quite. We farmers too sunk borewells to irrigate our crops and continued drawing waters until we emptied the belly of mother earth. The groundwater levels have depleted to 800 -1000 feet. If we do not realise it now we are going to reach a point of no return very soon, we will have no water to drink or farm. It is time we wake up and perform our role….”

Vipulbhai from Shihori, Banaskantha narrated the above while appealing us for deepening the lake in their village. We had stated our preconditions, i.e. to ferry the excavated soil and collect a contribution from each and every family to build a corpus for managing community water sources.

We have experienced that many times the tractors arrive until good quality topsoil is been excavated, once the quality of soil changes the tractors stop. Hence, It was also mentioned that the tractors to ferry the soil should not stop mid-way but arrive until the entire task is finished. 

Vipulbhai and the farmers who have land around the lake had assured all the above would be followed and they did. Our experience in Shihori has been very encouraging. We were in the village to monitor the ongoing lake deepening work, and were impressed by the disciplined manner it was been carried out. They were grateful for the support VSSM and financial assistance from Fine Organic Industries Pvt. Ltd.

How wonderful it would be if everyone woke up to this need, the earth will once again be alive and beautiful!!” Vipulbhai shared. 

We are delighted with the acceptance and recognition the water conservation efforts are receiving. Hope this village leadership competes with each other and races to deepen as many lakes possible. It sounds like a perfect race, where everyone will win!!

 અમારા વિસ્તારમાં સરકારે બોરવેલ કર્યા અને અહીંયાથી પાણી લઈને અછતવાળા વિસ્તારો -રાધનપુર, સાંતલપુરમાં ખુબ આપ્યું. હવે નર્મદા આવીને બોરવેલ બંધ થયા. આ સિવાય અમે ખેડૂતોએ પણ ખેતી માટે બોરવેલ કર્યાને પાણી કાઢે રાખ્યું. એટલે અમારા તળ 800 થી 1000 ફૂટ પહોંચ્યા. હવે નહીં જાગીએ તો શહેરમાં જઈને મજૂરી કરવા'વારો આવવાનો એટલે ભઈ'સાબ હવે જાગો...'

બનાસકાંઠાના શિરોહીગામમાં રહેતા વિપુલભાઈએ આ વાત એમના ગામનું તળાવ ગાળવાની વિનંતી કરતી વખતે કરેલી. 

અમે કહેલું માટી ઉપાડવા ટ્રેક્ટર મુકવા ઉપરાંત નાનો ફાળો ભેગો કરવો પડશે તો તળાવનું કામ કરીશું. પાછુ ટ્રેક્ટર ખોદકામ થાય ત્યાં સુધી સતત આવવા જોઈએ. 

વિપુલભાઈ અને શિહોરીનું જે તળાવ ખોદાઈ રહ્યું છે તે તળાવ આસપાસના ખેડૂતોએ આ વાતની ખાત્રી આપી અને એ ખાત્રી બરાબર પાળી. 

ઘણી જગ્યાએ ફળદ્રુપ માટી હોય ત્યાં સુધી ટ્રેક્ટર આવે પછી કોઈ તકવાય આવે નહીં. અમારા આવા ઘણા અનુભવ છે માટે જ લખુ છું. પણ શિરોહી અનુભવ નોખો હતો.

અમે તળાવનું કામ કેવું ચાલે છે તે જોવા ગયા તો એકદમ સીસ્તબદ્ધ કામ થઈ રહ્યું હતું.

સૌએ સંસ્થા અને આ તળાવ જેમની મદદથી થાય છે તે ફાઈન ઓર્ગેનીક ઈન્ડ્રસ્ટ્રીઝ પ્રા. લી.નો આભાર માન્યો.

અમે ગામનો આભાર માન્યો. મૂળ તો જાગૃત થયા એ માટે. જો કે વિપુલભાઈએ કહ્યું, 'આપણા આ તળાવને જોવા ઘણા લોકો આવે છે અને પોતાના ગામના તળાવો ઊંડા કરાવવા માટે સંસ્થાનો સંપર્ક કરાવવા કહે છે..બેન બધા જાગી તો કેવું રૃડુ થઈ જાય નહીં?'

ચાલો સારુ થઈ રહ્યું છે.. 

જ્યોત સે જ્યોત જલે... ની જેમ હકારાત્મક તળાવ ગળાવવાનો વાદ સૌ લઈ રહ્યા છે એનો રાજીપો...

શિહોરીના તળાવની ખોદકામ શરૃ કર્યા પહેલાંની દશા.. હાલ ખોદાઈ રહ્યું છે અને ગામના જે યુવાનો આ કાર્યમાં સક્રિય છે તે સૌની સાથેના ફોટો....

Almost 10 years ago I happen to read a  very pragmatic book on the water woes of Zalawad/Surendranagar region authored by my very dear Arvindbhai Acharya whom we all called Bhai.

A couple of years ago VSSM initiated water conservation works in Banasknatha. Until now it has facilitated deepening of 97 lakes in a region that is increasingly becoming water-starved. The efforts VSSM has undertaken receive and applaud from state Chief Minister Shri Vijaybhai Rupani.

I received an early morning message by Surendranagar District Collector Shri K Rajesh who had recently learnt that we work on the issues of water in Banaskantha, telling us to begin water conservation efforts in Surendranagar too, and that government is prepared to support the efforts.

VSSM has its own set of preconditions before commencing on any such work. As it is we call the efforts ‘Participatory Water Management Program’. The village leadership and community must contribute both in cash and kind. There has to be a corpus for maintaining the deepened lakes.

VSSM also need support from its well-wishing donors to be able to carry out such mammoth efforts. I spoke to respected Rashminbhai Sanghvi about the same. He assured we will work hard. We comprehend the fact that Surendranagar too needs massive water conservation efforts. But to be dependent on the Government alone is not a sustainable solution. Community participation equals community responsibility.

We were looking at villages that faced acute water shortages. We reached out to our dear Truptiben or Tiniben as we all call her. So what she is a grandmother now. For us, she will always be Tiniben someone who has stood by us right from the beginning of our journey of working for the nomads of Gujarat. She spoke to Ramkubhai and very soon we received an invite from him.

 I arrived at his village Dudhai where he had already gathered leaders from three villages.  After the first stage of the conversation, we went ahead to see Dudhai’s Hadasar lake, Sarla’s Ratda and Narali lakes and Gadhda’s Khara lake.

The region is struggling to meet it’s water needs. The groundwater is saline hence, exploring it is not an option they can work with. Lakes are their saviours.

The villagers use the lake waters to irrigate monsoon crops and if there is surplus water left they think about doing winter crops.

Water scarcity triggers distress migration during winters and summers when families migrate to urban regions in search of livelihood.

Thank you Shri K Rajesh for drawing our attention and giving your mandate to the need of launching water conservation efforts in Surendranagar.  We shall work together to improve the water conditions of this region.

We hope the communities realise the need to work in this direction and become aware to put in efforts for the same.

ઝાલાવાડની જળસમસ્યા પુસ્તક મારા પ્રિય અરવીંદભાઈ આચાર્ય જેમને અમે ભાઈ કહેતા તેમણે લખેલું જે મે દસેક વર્ષ પહેલાં વાંચેલું.

અમે જળ સમસ્યા માટે બનાસકાંઠામાં કામ કરીએ. 97 જેટલા તળાવો અમે ત્યાં ઊંડા કરી દીધા. આપણા મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીએ પણ અમારા આ કાર્યને બીદરાદવ્યું.

આવામાં સુરેન્દ્રનગરના ખુબ લાગણીશીલ અધિકારી એવા કલેકટર શ્રી કે. રાજેશને પણ પાણીના કાર્યો અમે કરતા હોવાનો ખ્યાલ આવ્યો ને એમનો એક સવારે સુરેન્દ્રનગરમાં પણ આ પ્રકારના કાર્યો શરૃ કરવા માટેનો મેસેજ આવ્યો. સરકાર પણ મદદ કરશે તેવું તેમણે કહ્યું.

પણ સરકારની સાથે સાથે સમાજ તરીકે પણ અમારે ભંડોળ ભેગું કરવું પડે. વળી ગામને તૈયાર કરવું પડે. કેમ કે અમે ગામની ભાગીદારી વગર તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાના કાર્યો કરીએ નહીં.

ભંડોળ માટે તો અમારા પ્રિય આદરણીય રશ્મીભાઈ સંઘવી સાથે વાત કરી અને તેઓએ કહ્યું આપણે મહેનત કરીશું. સુરેન્દ્રનગરમાં પણ તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાની ખુબ જરૃર છે.

અમારા કાર્યકર હર્ષદે કેટલાક ગામલોકો સાથે બેઠક કરી રાખેલી. હું પણ એ ગામોમાં ગઈ. પણ મને હજુ વધારે અછત વાળો વિસ્તાર કામ કરવા માટે મળે તો સારુ એવું થતું હતું.

વિચરતી જાતિઓના કામોમાં શરૃઆતથી મારા સાથીદાર તૃપ્તીબેન અમે તો ટીનીબેન કહીએ ભલેને હવે એમની દીકરીના ઘરે દીકરી આવી પણ અમારા સૌ માટે તો એ ટીનીબહેન જ રહ્યા. એમને વાત કરી એમણે મૂળીના રામકુભાઈ સાથે વાત કરવા કહ્યું. ને રામકુભાઈને ફોન કર્યો ને એમણે તો તુરત આવો એમ કહ્યું.

હું એમના ગામ દૂધઈ પહોંચી તો એમણે ત્રણ ગામના આગેવાનોને ભેગા કરી રાખ્યા હતા. એમની સાથે પ્રાથમિક વાત કરીને અમે દૂધઈગામનું હાદાસર તળાવ, સરલાગામનું રાતડા તેમજ નરાળી તળાવ અને ગઢડાગામનું ખારા તળાવ જોવા ગયા.

આ વિસ્તાર પાણી માટે ઝઝૂમી રહ્યો છે. તળમાં ખારા પાણી છે. એટલે બોરવેલથી પણ ખેતી થતી નથી. તળાવ એક માત્ર આધાર છે.

લોકો તળાવમાંથી ચોમાસુ અને વધારે પાણી રહે તો શિયાળું ખેતી કરે છે.

રામકુભાઈએ કહ્યું બેન, 'દર વર્ષે ગામમાંથી પંદર વીસ પરિવારો ગામ ખાલીને રોજી રોટીની શોધમાં શહેરભણી જઈ રહ્યા છે. શહેરમાં જનારા પાસે ખેતીની જમીન છે પણ પાણી નથી એટલે જાય છે.'

થેક્યુ કલેક્ટર સાહેબ આપે ધ્યાન દોર્યું અને આ વિસ્તાર પાણીની દષ્ટિએ જોયો. આ વિસ્તારના તળાવ કરીશું એ નક્કી..

બસ લોકો વધુ જાગૃત થાય અને પોતાના વિસ્તારમાં પાણીના તળ વધારે સાબદા થાય તે માટે કાર્યશીલ બને તેવી અભ્યર્થના..

Menstruation, a natural physiological occurrence each woman undergoes every month, a cycle that is responsible for keeping her healthy. ‘Period’ is a simple and straight forward term to describe this cycle whereas Gujarati describes it called ‘Masik Dharm’ and there are all sorts of religious sanctions surrounding it. In India, we have a lot of stigma and taboo attached to this natural phenomenon. There is a long list of cannot/don’ts to be adhered to for women during her periods. Cannot go to the temple, touch anything auspicious, can’t go near the gas-stove, water pot or enter the kitchen, don’t touch a million things…it’s an exhaustive list

 Even in 21 century our society who otherwise aims of Mars and Moon, showcases and practices medieval and orthodox approach when it comes to women’s menstrual cycle.

 I recently had an opportunity to share rural beliefs and perspectives about the menstrual cycle at a program organised at IIM-Ahmedabad. Jyoti has made a though-provoking documentary series on the subject. The program had presence of Ms. Jyoti and Dr. Archana. 

 I have spent my childhood in  village (like everywhere else)  such beliefs and practices are a norm and I still witness the same when working with the women of nomadic and de-notified communities. At times I have a deep surge of irritation towards our mindsets whereas there is a sense of pity for women who still are forced to follow the dictates. 

 Milanbhai captured the event in his camera, some of which are only of me. Sharing here because I liked them all. Thank you Milanbhai.

 માસીક ધર્મ જબરો ગુજરાતી શબ્દ છે...

અમે એને #પીરીયડમાં થવું કે પીરીયડમાં હોવું એમ કહીએ..

આ પીરીયડ એ કુદરતી પ્રક્રિયા છે.. દરેક સ્ત્રી દર મહિને પીરીયડમાંથી પસાર થાય છે..

પણ સમાજે મહિનાના ચાર દિવસ પીરીયડમાં થનારી સ્ત્રીને લઈને કેવા કેવા વિચિત્ર અને દુઃખદ નિયમો બનાવ્યા.

રસોઈ કરાય નહીં, આને અડાય નહીં, મંદિરમાં જવાય નહીં. લીસ્ટ ઘણું લાંબુ અને થકવાડનારુ છે..

21મી સદીમાં વિકાસની દિશામાં હરણફાળ ભરવાના અભરખા રાખનાર આપણે સ્ત્રીઓના પીરીયડને લઈને ભયંકર સંકુચિતતા દાખવીયે છીએ..

આઈઆઈએમમાં આ વિષયને લઈને આયોજીત એક ચર્ચા સત્રમાં જવાનું થયું. જ્યોતિએ આ મુદ્દે સરસ વીડિયો સીરીઝ કરી છે. તે અને ડો. અર્ચના બેન પણ કાર્યક્રમમાં હાજર રહ્યા. મારા ભાગે ગામડાંઓમાં આ વિષયને લઈને કેવી માન્યતાઓ છે તેની વાત કરવાની મારા શીરે આવી...

હું ગામડાંમાં ઊછરી છું. ત્યાં આ બધુ બહુ નજીકથી જોયું છે આજેય વિચરતી જાતિઓની વસાહતોમાં આ બધુ જોવું છું ત્યારે આપણા સમાજની આ બધી વિચિત્ર અને રૃઢિગત માન્યતાઓને લઈને દયા ઉપજે છે...

The wonders of Vaghpura..

VSSM's water conservation efforts recently took me to  Vaghpura village near Gujarat-Rajasthan boarder. The villagers had requested for deepening of their community lake. As usual our condition of villagers contributing to lifting the excavated soil as well as small cash donation (to be used for water conservation works in the village)  by each household while VSSM supported JCB expenses prevailed.  The objective of the visit was to meet the community and leaders to discuss the telephonic conversations in person.

 “Ben, this year we faced an onslaught locust on our crops which caused severe damage to our crops. The loss has been immense. Also because we are at the fringe of Gujarat, we have remained a deprived and backward area as most benefits do not reach us as well as they do in other villages. However, we shall do as you tell us too!!” Sarpanch Virabhai spoke on behalf of the leaders and the community.

 It was a regular visit to meet the community and see the region, the lake etc but what was striking about this village was the place we were seated. Under the glorious and massive shade of a woodland created by 108 peepul trees, right at the centre of the village.  It has taken them 10 years to raise these native trees. Peepul isn't a tree humans Peepul is not a species that many prefer to plant, however, a saint visited the village and insisted that he will meditate under the canopy of 108 peepul trees, as a result, these trees were planted. And it was not just here they had planted trees at many other places too. This habit of planting trees speaks a lot about the sincerity of the community and its leadership. Our experience says that people show a lot of enthusiasm in planting trees but when it comes to raising them they don’t feel as encouraged but the villagers here had succeeded in showing their commitment towards both planting and raising the trees.

 Their unity has been inspiring too. When we conveyed  our intention  to conduct tree plantation drive along with deepening of lakes, they immediately welcomed the idea and were ready to  allot land for the same.

 I was accompanied by respected Shri Rashminbhai Sanghvi who is like a father to me and someone who helped us initiate and shape the water conservation efforts, Shri Girishbhai Saive and Ms Shweta Dodeja.

 We hope more and more villages are inspired to join this movement.

 બનાસકાંઠા અને રાજસ્થાની બોર્ડર પર આવેલા વાઘાસણગામમાં તળાવના કામો માટે જવાનું થયું.

ગામમાં તળાવ ખરુ પણ એને વધારે ઊંડુ કરવા માટે ગામના લોકોએ વિનંતી કરેલી.

અમે શરત કરેલી કે માટી તો તમારે ઉપાડવાની એ ઉપરાંત નાનકડો ફાળો પણ ખોદકામ માટે આપવાનો. આ ફાળો ખોદકામ માટે જ વપરાશે.

ફોન પર થયેલી આ વાત રૃબરૃ કરવા ગામમાં જવાનું થયું.

ગામલોકો સાથે બેઠક થઈ જેમાં સરપંચ વીરાભાઈ અને ગામલોકોએ કહ્યું,

'બેન આ ફેરા તીડ ઘૈઈક આયા. બહુ નુકશોન થ્યું.

પાસો વિસ્તારેય પસાત. છતો તમે કો સો ઈમ થશે એટલો ફાળો ભેરો કરી આલશું. પાસુ અમારુ આ ગોમ બોર્ડર પરનું એટલે બીજા ગોમોન મળ એવા લાભથીયે અમે વંચિત રહી જઈએ. છતો કરીશું થાય એ'

ગામમાં જતા વેત તળાવ જોવા ગયા. પણ મજાની વાત તો તળાવ જોયા પછી એમણે અમને જે જગ્યાએ બેસાડ્યા તે જગ્યાની હતી. 108 પીપળાનું વન. બરાબર ગામની વચ્ચે. દસ વર્ષની મહેનતથી આ પીપળા ઉછર્યા હતા. મૂળ એક સન્યાસી ગામમાં તપ માટે આવ્યા એમણે પીપળાના વનમાં બેસી તપ કરવાનું કહ્યું એટલે પીપળા વવાયા. બાકી પીપળાને લોકો બહુ પસંદ નથી કરતા.

ખેર વાધપુરાએ આ પીપળા સિવાય પણ અન્ય એક જગ્યા પર વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા હતા. વૃક્ષ પ્રેમ તો ઘણા દાખવે અને વૃક્ષ વાવે પણ ખરા પણ મુશ્કેલ અને ખરી કસોટી વૃક્ષોના જતનની છે. જે વાઘપુરાગામના લોકોએ કરી બતાવ્યું હતું.

અમે ગામનું તળાવ ગાળવાનું કરીશુ અને વૃક્ષારોપણ કરવાની ઈચ્છા હોવાનું પણ અમે કહ્યું. ગામલોકોએ અમારી વાતને વધાવી અને આ માટે અલગ જમીન કાઢી આપવાની હરખ સાથે હા પાડી.

મુંબઈથી તળાવ ગાળવાનું કામ જેમણે શીખવાડ્યું, સમજાવ્યું અને જેમના થકી આ કાર્યો માટે મદદ મળે છે એવા આદરણીય અને જેમને હું મારા પિતા કહુ છું તે રશ્મીનભાઈ સંઘવી , સુશ્રી શ્વેતા ડોડેજા, ગીરીશ સાઈવે પણ વાઘપુરા અમારી સાથે આવ્યા. જે પણ ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.

વધુ ગામો એક સમજણ સાથે તળાવ ગળાવવા તૈયાર થાય તેવું ઈચ્છીએ..

“Ben, we have been wandering for so many years. Do you feel that we will ever be able to settle down?? Here we are, living on the banks of a lake, everyone can see our pathetic living conditions yet they choose to ignore us. Nobody is willing to give us land for settling down!!”

Be it Bashirbhai Oad or Natubhai Bajaniya, whenever I happen to be in Visnagar for a meeting or a visit these men would come to meet me in person or callup at regular interval to inquire about the status of their applications and I would always assure them that things will move for sure. I remember once Natubhai lost his patience and had an outburst. A very annoyed Natubhai had lectured me for 15 minutes, telling me to stop giving false hope!!

Today Natubhai, Bashirbhai and like them 119 families of Gadaliya, Raval, Vansfoda, Vadi, Bajaniya, Oad communities have a reason to celebrate. Mehsana District Collector, the very compassionate  Shri Patel Saheb has allotted residential plots to these families. These families will now be able to fulfil their dream of a house which they will not be required to vacate or move away from.

VSSM and these families have been struggling to obtain residential plots for the last 10 years. Our team members Tohid and Rizwan have left no stone unturned to make the possibility of residential plots a reality for these families. There have been numerous occasions they have felt dejected, defeated but they never lost hope and continued to strive. The families receiving plots today is a result of their untiring efforts.

It is always said however hard you try things happen when the time is ripe, perhaps the time had ripened for these families.

 We are grateful to Mehsana District Collector for his empathetic decision. There are thousands of nomadic families in Mehsana, we humbly request you to help them realise their dream of a home!!

'બેન ચેટલા વરહથી રઝળીએ સીએ.. તે અમારુ હાચેન ચોય ઠેકોણું પડશે ક નઈ? આ તળાવની પાળે પડ્યા સીએ. બધાય અમન ભાળ પણ કોય રહેવા બલ્લે જમી આલતું નહીં..'

બશીરભાઈ ઓડ હોય કે નટુભાઈ બજાણિયા #વિસનગર જવાનું થાય કે કોઈ મીટીંગમાં એ લોકો આવ્યા હોય કે દર થોડા સમયે ફોન કરીને બસ આ એક જ વાત કર્યા કરે અને હું દર વખતે ધરપત રાખવાનું કહેતી. એક વખતે તો નટુભાઈ સખત ગુસ્સે થયેલા બેન તમારાથી ના થાય તો રહેવા દ્યો. પણ ખોટી આશા ના વતાડો... વગેરે જેવું લગભગ પંદર મીનીટ બોલી ગયેલા..

આજે નટુભાઈ અને બશીરભાઈ જેવા #ગાડલિયા, #રાવળ, #વાંસફોડા, #વાદી, #બજાણિયા, #ઓડ સમુદાયના 119 પરિવારોના જીવને સાતા મળશે.

#મહેસાણા #કલેક્ટર શ્રી પટેલ સાહેબે આ પરિવારોની સ્થિતિ સમજી તેમને રહેણાંર અર્થે પ્લોટ ફાળવ્યા. હવે સ્વપ્નનું ઘર બનશે જ્યાંથી કોઈ એમને ખાલી નહીં કરાવી શકે.

છેલ્લા દસ વર્ષથી આ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે VSSM દ્વારા અમે મથી રહ્યા હતા. કાર્યકર તોહીદ અને રીઝવાને તો સરકારી કચેરીના પગથિયાં ઘસી નાખેલા. તોહીદ તો ઘણીવાર નાસીપાસ થઈ જાય જોકે હારે થાકે ચાલે એમ નહોતું એટલે આવેલી નિરાશા ખંખેરી પાછો કામે લાગી જતો જેનું પરિણામ આજે એને મળ્યું.

કહેવાય છે દરેકનો એક સમય હોય છે એ સમય પહેલાં લાખ વલખાં મારીએ કાંઈ થતું નથી. બસ આ પરિવારોનો સમય હવે પાક્યો.

આભાર કલેક્ટર સાહેબ આપની લાગણીના લીધે જ આ શક્ય બન્યું. સાથે મહેસાણા જિલ્લામાં વસતા અન્ય વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારોને પણ ઘર માટે જગ્યા અપાવવામાં નિમિત્ત બનવા આગ્રહભરી પ્રેમપૂર્વકની વિનંતી...

આપણા રાજ્યના વડા #મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી વિજયભાઈ રૃપાણી, #સામાજિક ન્યાય અને અધિકારીતા વિભાગના મંત્રી શ્રી ઈશ્વરભાઈ પરમાર, કે કેલાસ નાથન સર, ડી.એચ.શાહ સાહેબ, ભગવાનકાકા (પંચાલ) વગેરે સ્નેહીજનોનો આભાર.. આપ સૌની લાગણીના લીધે જ આ બધું શક્ય બન્યું..

The  Ministry of  Information and Broadcasting, GOI’s Press Information Bureau, Ahmedabad and Gujarat University’s Department of Communication and Journalism on the occasion of International Women’s Day hosted a joint program to facilitate women path-breakers who have innovatively used the information and communication platform for the upliftment and development of women at extreme margins. 

 VSSM works for the marginalised communities that include a significant number of women. We are grateful for the honour and recognition of these efforts. 

 One of the primary reason to accept this award is my Guru Ms Sonalbahen. It is a matter of honour to receive the award from a teacher whom I respect the most. She was the one who instilled some very important life lessons, it is a good fortune to be able to have Sonalbahen as a teacher. I have studied under numerous teachers from grade 1 to M.Phil but very few teachers have made a lasting impact and Sonalbahen tops the list. Even today whenever I have to talk about my teachers Sonalbahen comes first to my mind.

 Thank you, Ma’am, you are one of those who enabled me to find my goal in life!!

 The honour was accepted on behalf of all who have walked with me through VSSM’s journey.

સોનલબહેન જેમણે મને જીવનલક્ષી શિક્ષણ આપ્યું. તેમના જેવા શિક્ષક મેળવવા એ નસીબની વાત. એકડા ધોરણથી લઈને એમ.ફીલ સુધી ઘણા શિક્ષકોએ ભણાવ્યું તેમાં આંગળીના વેઠે ગણાય એટલા જ શિક્ષકો યાદ રહ્યા છે એમાં સોનલબહેન મોખરે. આજે પણ શિક્ષકની વાત આવે તો સૌથી પહેલાં તેઓ જ મારી નજર સામે આવે.. થેક્યુ મેમ મારા જીવનને એક ધ્યેય અપાવવામાં નિમિત્તે બનેલા કેટલાકમાંના એક આપ પણ છો...

/mittal Patel meets Saraniya families of Bagasara

‘Ben, even the birds have a nest to fly back home, please do something so that we have our own nests too!!” Navghanbhai Saraniyaa from Amreli’s Bagasara would urge me each time he would meet me. We had filed applications for allotment of residential plots to these families but seems the time wasn’t ripe.

The current district collector is an extremely compassionate and proactive individual. He is also trying hard to adhere to our CM’s pledge of ‘housing for all’. Recently, he conducted a draw to decide which of the 112 Saraniya, Gadaliya and Devipujak nomads from Bagasara will be the first to receive the plots. In coming days the selected families will be handed over the documents to their plots.

Finally, after years of wait, these families will be receiving permanent plots to build their permanent nests. A decent nest, isn’t it something we all strive for?

પંખીઓન માળા હોય એમ અમારા માળા થાય એવું કાંક કરો બેન..

અમરેલીના બગસરામાં રહેતા નવઘણભાઈ સરાણિયા જ્યારે પણ મળે ત્યારે સતત આ વાત કર્યા કરે.

અમે રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ મળે તેની અરજી કરેલી. પણ સમય બરાબર પાક્યો નહોતો.

હાલના કલેક્ટર શ્રી બહુ ભલા માણસ. વળી રાજ્યના મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીનો પ્રકલ્પ આવા પરિવારોને ઘર આપવાનો. એટલે બગસરામાં રહેતા 112 વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારો જેમાં સરાણિયા, ગાડલિયા અને દેવીપૂજકોને પ્લોટની ફાળવણી પહેલાં ક્યા નંબરનો પ્લોટ ફાળવાશે તે અંગેનો ડ્રો કલેક્ટર શ્રી દ્વારા કરવામાં આવ્યો. આગામી દિવસોમાં આ પરિવારોમાં જે નંબરના પ્લોટ મળ્યા છે તે નંબર સાથેની સનદ પણ મળશે.

કેટલા વર્ષોની મહેનત પછી આ પરિવારો પોતાની જગ્યા ભેગા થશે.

અમારા કાર્યકર રમેશભાઈએ આ પરિવારોને પુરાવા એકત્રીત કરી આપવાથી લઈને તેમને પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે ખુબ મહેનત કરી. રમેશની આ મહેનત લેખે લાગી.

VSSM has initiated a water conservation campaign with an objective to retain the waters of villages and farms. The first phase of this campaign began in Banaskantha district where we have been receiving very good response. The communities are waking up to the urgent need to conserve water.

This year we have already kicked off the village lake deepening efforts. The works for the same are on in Sihori village in Kankrej. Recently, I was in the region to meet the community and monitor on-going efforts. The attached images share glimpses of the work in progress. As we have mentioned here at past occasions, VSSM takes the responsibility of JCB expenses while the villagers have to take the responsibility of ferrying the excavated soil.

I hope each villager shows concern about water and takes the required efforts to ensure the whatever water reservoirs they use are repaired and restored. It is our responsibility to conserve water for the coming generations. Lest we shall all be hopelessly repenting.

Lake deepening work

ગામનું પાણી ગામમાં ને સીમનું સીમમાં. આ વાક્યને ચરીતાર્થ કરવા - પાણીને બચાવવા અમે જળસંચય અભીયાન આરંભ્યું છે.

બનાસકાંઠામાં આરંભેલા આ અભીયાનને સારો પ્રતિસાદ મળી રહ્યો છે.

ગામલોકો ધીમે ધીમે પણ જાગૃત થઈ રહ્યા છે.

કાંકરેજના સીહોરીનું તળાવ ગાળવાનું પણ અમે શરૃ કર્યું. ગામલોકો સાથે તળાવ જોવા જવાનું થયું તે વેળાની કેટલીક તસવીરો અને તળાવ ખોદાવવાનું શરૃ કર્યું તે આ સાથે સમજવા ખાતર મૂકી છે.

ગામલોકો માટી ઉપાડવાનું કામ કરે અને સંસ્થા માટી ખોદી આપવાનું..

દરેક ગ્રામવાસી પાણીની ચિંતા કરે અને પોતાના વાસણો વરસાદ પહેલાં સાબદા કરવાનું કરે તેવી આશા રાખુ છું...

‘Agitating the Gandhian way,’ when such a statement is heard the first thought that comes across would be people agitating against injustice, raising their voice against indiscrimination.  

 Recently, we got to hear these words in the region we work. Naturally, we got concerned and curious. However, when we dug deeper into the matter the opposite came to light  on this Gandhian way of objecting!! The agitators were opposing the authority’s  decision to grant permanent residency to few Dafer families in their village.

Gandhiji never discriminated based on caste, class or religion, he embraced all and preached the same. Sadly, in this case Gandhiji's name was used not to embrace the needy but to reject, to exclude.

Surendranagar District Collector Shri K Rajesh has taken upon himself to ensure that the Dafer families of Surendranagar are allotted plots under the government’s pledge of housing for all. Shri Rajesh has received immense support from respected Chief Minister Shri Vijaybhai Rupani. It was our discussion with Shri Vijaybhai on the prevailing issues of nomadic communities that prompted his pledge to accelerate the process of providing houses to nomads. Shri K Rajesh is doing his best as district collector to uphold this pledge and his individual  commitment to the poor. As a result, he allotted plots to Dafer and other communities.

 However, as soon as the news of allotment of plots to Dafer families in their village reached the villagers they expressed their resistance, “The Dafer will rob us, harass the farmers, steal our cattle, eat non-vegetarian foods. They are an ill-tempered and frenetic community with an unlawful past!” All this and much more was narrated in a written complaint issued against the government’s decision to allot plots to the Dafer. Their  demand was to revoke the decision.  

The population of Dafer is very negligent in Surendranagar district.  Dafer are a hardworking community. None of them is dreadful. They are God-fearing and hard-working families.

I believe it is inappropriate to judge anyone based on her/his past. Valiyo dacoit could turn into Rishi Valmiki because people trusted and embraced him. These families are like us, they are our own. It is time we put the phrase “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam/The world is one family” into practice. 

 I have refrained from mentioning the names of the agitating villagers. However, based on my experience I would like to convey to all those who are opposing that these are humble humans. Some might have faulted in the past but that was to feed their hungry bellies. No one has made fortune or built mansions from supposed loots their earlier generations might have conducted. Well, had they made mansions no one would be opposing them today. The resistance has frightened them a lot. 

 Jyot se Jyot Jalate chalo prem ki ganga bahate chalo…

 Let us make this world a better and brighter place. Let us light hope for the deprived and marginalised fellow human beings. It is indeed saddening to witness such resistance. We wish for a day when the inequality  around vanishes and we learn to find happiness from making other’s happy. Hope the resisting villagers understand this, we will be initiating a dialogue with them soon.

 How can we deny their right to a home?? How can we not be human? Hope society comprehends the fundamental need of these fellow humans.
