Nomadic communities welcomes Mittal Patel 

"Fear is not meant to be feared,

Fearlessness is the goal,

Those who are afraid, do not frighten them,

Such is the essence of our culture."

The words of poet Dula Bhaya Kaghani are very insightful. Many villages oppose the settlement of nomadic communities. In our village, they say, "You cannot settle here." It is painful to hear such things.

However, in between all this, there are some villages that accept these families with respect. Looking at the leaders of such villages gives us encouragement to keep working in this direction.

In the village of Devpura, Vijapur, in Mehsana district, Saraniya families have been living there for years. We have been able to gather identification proof. But now, the desire is to secure a permanent place for their residence. Currently, there is no electricity in the settlement, and snakes sometimes appear where they live. When we recently passed through Devpura, we met them. They requested us to make more efforts so that they could quickly get electricity and a plot for permanent residence.

Sometimes, it feels like these families have so much hope in us. We tell them that we will present their case to the government and will work sincerely. While we hope that the government will listen to these families’ concerns and quickly provide plots, we remain hopeful.

May God always be the cause of everyone’s well-being, and may good things happen for all.

કવિ દુલા ભાયા કાગની આ વાત કેવી સૂચક. વિચરતી જાતિઓના વસવાટ સામે ઘણા ગામો વિરોધ કરે. અમારા ગામમાં તમારો વસવાટ નહીં આવું કહે.. આ બધુ સાંભળીએ ત્યારે ઘણી પીડા થાય.

જો કે આ બધાની વચમાં કેટલાક ગામો આ પરિવારોને માનભેર અપનાવે પણ ખરા.. આવા ગામના આગેવાનોને જોઈને અમને આવા કાર્યોમાં મથતા રહેવાની હામ મળે..

મહેસાણાના વિજાપુરનું દેવપુરાગામ. સરાણિયા પરિવારો ત્યાં વર્ષોથી રહે. ઓળખાણ ના પુરાવા તો અમે કઢાવ્યા. પણ હવે ઈચ્છા કાયમી રહેણાંકની જગ્યા મળે તેની. હાલ વસાહતમાં વીજળી નથી. જ્યાં રહે ત્યાં સાપ પણ નીકળે. હમણાં દેવપુરા પાસેથી નીકળ્યા ત્યારે એમને મળ્યા. સૌએ વીજળી અને પ્લોટ ઝટ મળે એ માટે વધુ કોશિશ કરવા કહ્યું.

ક્યારેક થાય આ બધા પરિવારોને અમારા પર કેટલી આશા છે. અમે કહીએ અમે સરકારમાં રજૂઆત કરીશું ને પુરા મનથી મથીશું. જો કે સરકાર આ પરિવારોની રાવ સાંભળશે ને ઝટ પ્લોટ આપશે એવી આશા પણ છે..

બસ સૌના શુભમાં ઈશ્વર હંમેશા નિમિત્ત બનાવે તેવી શુભભાવના...

"We have been desperately waiting for you.  You are the only one who understands our poor people's problems".

The Saraniya families staying in Himmatnagar of Sabarkantha District expressed this with deep anguish.

We work for the nomadic tribes including Saraniya families in Gujarat & help them get a permanent address by constructing houses for them. The Saraniya family of Himmatnagar know that we have constructed houses for many nomadic families. So with some hope that we will be able to get them the houses too, they pleaded.. We definitely will help them . They are our loved ones. 

Fortunately, the collector of Sabarkantha, Shri Naimesh Dave is a very kind person. He is aware of the work VSSM does. He instructed his officers  to start the process of allocating the plot to about 125 families staying at different places in Himmatnagar. There is a hope that In near future the families will get their piece of land.

We also talked with the families about education for their children. This year we are commencing the operations of our Pansar Hostel near Gandhinagar. The children will come from their settlements and stay at the hostel.

To identify families in distress & ensure that the benefit of government schemes for such people reach them is what we constantly strive for. It is because of our associates like Shri Tohidbhai in Sabarkantha that we are able to identify such families.

Shri Pratulbhai Shroff  helps us a lot in this work and I express my gratitude to him for his benevolence.

Wish that God makes us instrumental always in such noble work.

સાબરકાંઠાના હિંમતનગરમાં રહેતા સરાણિયા પરિવારોએ ભાવ સાથે કહ્યું.

ગુજરાતમાં વસતા વિચરતી જાતિમાંના સરાણિયા પરિવારોને કાયમી સરનામુ અપાવવાનું અમે કરીએ. ઘણા પરિવારોની વસાહતો અમે બાંધી એ વાત હિંમતનગરમાં રહેતા આ પરિવારો જાણે માટે અમને પણ સ્થાયી સરનામુ અપાવવામાં મદદરૃપ થાવ તેવું એક આશા અને ભાવ સાથે એમણે કહ્યું..

મદદરૃપ થવાનું જ હોય. આમ પણ આ બધા અમારા વહાલા પરિવારો..

નસીબજોગે સાબરકાંઠાના કલેક્ટર શ્રી નૈમેશ દવે પણ ભલા. એ VSSM ના કામોથી પરિચીત. એમણે અધિકારીઓને હિંમનતગરમાં ઠેકઠેકાણે રહેતા 125થી વધારે પરિવારોને સ્થાયી પ્લોટ આપવાની કામગીરી આરંભી દીધી. નજીકના ભવિષ્યમાં આ પરિવારોને પોતાની જગ્યા મળશે તેવી આશા છે..

બાળકોને ભણાવવાની વાત પણ થઈ. આ વર્ષે ગાંધીનગર પાસેના પાનસરમાં શરૃ થનાર અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં આ વસાહતમાંથી પણ બાળકો ભણવા આવશે. 

તકલીફમાં હોય તેવા પરિવારોને શોધવા તેમના સુધી સરકારની વિવિધ યોજનાઓ પહોંચે તે માટે અમારી ટીમ સતત મથે. સાબરકાંઠામાં પણ અમારા કાર્યકર તોહીદભાઈ સતત મથે. એટલે જ આવા પરિવારોની વાત VSSM સુધી પહોંચે.

અમને વિચરતી જાતિ તેમજ વંચિત પરિવારોના માનવ અધિકારના કાર્યો માટે આદરણીય પ્રતુલભાઈ શ્રોફ ખુબ મદદ કરે તેમની લાગણી માટે આભારી છું..

"We put in a lot of effort to get our ration card. We could not get the ration card because some documents were always missing. We gave up. Those who had cards also had 10-12 names in the cards. Our boys would be staying separately after marriage, however it would not be possible to get a separate ration card for them."

This was the tragic story of Saraniya family living near Indira Bridge in Ahmedabad. Many years ago we had or baised a camp for them to get a Voter - id Card. Many got it. After that for a long time they were not in touch. We also focus more on villages so we also did not pay attention to this settlement staying in the city.

Certain seniors of this settlement came to our office. They had several preliminary questions. More than 700 families stay in this settlement. A road was being constructed which passes through the settlement. So many huts were going to be demolished. Seniors came with a hope that we will help them. 

When we did the survey we found out that many did not have ration cards. Many who had ration cards had not updated the same. Finally our associate Smt Madhuben & Suraj started filling up the forms. Both are very hard working & nice workers. 

The Government department in Ahmedabad corporation gave us a very strong co-operation. The officers came to the settlement and decided to give ration cards at the settlement itself. Shri Ravindrabhia Solanki and his team from the Government issued ration cards to many.

The work got done because of Respected Shri Rameshbhai Meena and Shri Jaswantbhai Jagoda of Supplies department in Gandhinagar. They were very sensitive to the issues of nomadic tribes.  Many thanks to all for helping in this mission.

 'રાશનકેડ નીહરે એ માટે કેટલી મેનત કરતા. પણ અમારી પાહે કાગળિયામાં કાંઈક તો ઘટે જ. એટલે કેડ નીહરે જ નહીં. અમે તો પસી પડતું મેલ્યું. જેમની પાહે કેડ હતા એમના કેડમાંય દસ, બાર જણાના નામ હોય. સોકરા તો લગન કરીન્ જુદા રે'તા હોય તોય ઈમના કેડ જુદા ના બને....'

અમદાવાદના ઈન્દિરાબ્રીજ પાસે રહેતા સરાણિયા પરિવારોની આ કથની.. વર્ષો પહેલાં આ બધાને મતદારકાર્ડ મળે તે માટે કેમ્પ કરેલો ને ઘણા બધાને એ વખતે મતદારકાર્ડ મળેલા. પછી ઘણો લાંબો સમય સંપર્કમાં નહીં રહેલા. અમે પણ વધારે ફોકસ ગામડાંઓમાં કરીએ એટલે  આ વસાહત તરફ ધ્યાન પણ ઝાઝુ ન અપાયું. 

ત્યાં પાછા આ વસાહતના આગેવાનો હમણાં ઓફીસ પર આવ્યા. એમના પ્રાથમિક પ્રશ્નો પણ ઘણા. 700 થી વધારે પરિવારો અહીંયા રહે.વળી હમણાં વસાહતની વચમાંથી રોડ જાય તે ઘણાના છાપરાં તુટવાના. 

આવામાં તમે મદદ કરોની ભાવના સાથે સૌ કાર્યાલય પર આવ્યા.

સર્વે કર્યો તો રેશનકાર્ડ ઘણા પાસે ન હોવાનું જોયું. સાથે રેશનકાર્ડ વિભાજન ન થયેલાનું પણ જાણ્યું. 

આખરે અમારા કાર્યકર મધુબહેન અને સૂરજ લાગ્યા બધાના ફોર્મ ભરવા. બેઉ મજાના અને ખુબ મહેનતુ કાર્યકરો. 

અમદાવાદ જિલ્લા પૂરવઠા વિભાગનો સહયોગ તો જબરજસ્ત. પૂરાવાના પ્રશ્નોને ઉકેલવા એમણે સ્થળ તપાસ કરીને સ્થળ પર જ રેશનકાર્ડ આપવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. અમદાવાદ પૂરવઠા કચેરીમાં કામ કરતા રવિન્દ્રભાઈ સોલંકી અને તેમની ટીમે વસાહતમાં આવીને કામ કર્યું ને ઘણા પરિવારોને રેશનકાર્ડ આપ્યા. 

ગાંધીનગર પૂરવઠા વિભાગ આદરણીય શ્રી રમેશ મીના, તેમજ જશવંતભાઈ જેગોડાની વંચિતો માટે લાગણી ખુબ રહી માટે આ કાર્ય થઈ શક્યું.

saying that Saraniya ladies welcomed me with folded hands.

I wondered, where would they have seen me

Further added, " we got the news that you had come to Kundla, but that time we were moving around in villages so we could not meet"

I was just listening to them when the lady said " I told everyone that they call Mittalben. Only then will our problems be solved. Else our life time will be spent moving around without homes. We will never be happy"

What faith they all have in us !!

They do not even know what we do. But yes we stand together in their difficult & happy times. If someone creates nuisance & difficulties for them, we do show our strength and warn them " It's enough". This support gives them a lot of comfort.

In Dhasa village of Botad, this Saraniya family spends the monsoon season and after that they pack up and live a nomad's life to earn their living.

They traded in bullocks but with increased use of tractors this also stopped. With no activity left it was meaningless to move around . They now want to settle down in one place. A permanent place from where no one can evict them.

 We will definitely help them because they are very much part of us. To give joy & happiness to others is the most satisfying work one can do. So we will for sure not fail in our duty.

'અરે બેન બા કેટલા વરહે તમને દીઠા. તમે ઝેણા હતા તાણ જોયેલા.' એમ કહીને બોટાદના ઢસાના સરાણિયા બહેનોએ મારા ઓવારણા લીધા પછી હાથ મેળવી રામ રામ કર્યા..

એમણે મને ક્યાં જોઈ હશે એ વિચારી રહી ત્યાં પાછા એ બોલ્યા,

'આમ તમારા વાવડ અમને મયળા કરે કે તમે કુંડલા આઈવાતા, બગસરા આઈવાતા, પણ ઈ ટાણે અમે ગામડાંઓમાં ફરતા તે મળવા નો અવાણું.'

હું એમને સાંભળી રહી હતી...

ત્યાં એ પાછુ બોલ્યા. 'મે તો બધા જણને કીધું કે એક ફેરા નેતલબેનને બોલાવો એ આવે તો આપણો કાંક ઉદ્ધાર થાય. બાકી આમના આમ ઘરબાર વના જીંદગી વઈ જાહે..પણ સુખ નઈ પામીયે'

કેવો વિશ્વાસ આ બધાને?

અમે શું કરી શકીએ એય ખબર નહીં. પણ હા, સુખ દુઃખમાં અમે સાથે ઊભા રહીએ.. કોઈ રંજાડે તો લાલ આંખે કરીને  'હવે બસ' કહીએ.. પણ આ સધિયારો એમને ઘણો મોટો..

બોટાદના ઢસામાં ઘણા વર્ષથી સરાણિયા પરિવારો ચોમાસુ રહે. ચોમાસુ ઉતરતા ગાડાં લઈને રોજી રોટી રળવા નીકળી પડે. 

બળદોનો વેપાર કરનાર આ પરિવારોના ધંધા હવે ભાંગ્યા એટલે ફરવાનો પણ મતલબ નથી. હવે એમને સ્થિર જીવન જોઈએ છે. પાક્કું અને પોતાનું ઘર પણ જોઈએ છે જ્યાંથી એમને કોઈ કાઢી ન શકે.

આ બધુંયે કરીશું. મૂળ તો આ આપણા જ ને ! અને કોઈને સુખ આપવાનું કામ તો આ દુનિયામાં સૌથી મોટું તો એમાં પાછી પાની કેમ કરીએ...

“You have eased our shoulders from carrying 15 kilos of weight… we can’t thank you enough…”

The Saraniya; popularly known as knife sharpeners are identified by the Saraan (the apparatus to sharpen tools) over their shoulders and also the black marks it leaves after they  off load it.

“Ben, we walk and wander across the villages with this Saraan over our shoulders. Despite of the availability of transport, the auto guys do not allow us to board their vehicle as 3-4 of us take too much of space along with the Saraan we carry. Hence, we have no choice but to walk across the villages. Walking also means we cannot cover too many villages at one go.” Surendranagar’s Bhailalbhai shared.

“If we could fix an emery on bicycle we can manage to reach 4-5 villages in a day, but who would think so for us? May God bless Krishnakant uncle who has taken the weight off our shoulders.”

VSSM, with support from Shri Krishnakant Mehta and Dr. Indira Mehta enabled the Saraniya families fix an emery (sharpening tool) on bicycles.

“We now have our own vehicle, not just to sharpen the knives but also to take our better-half on a pillion ride,” an upbeat Bhailalbhai shared with great enthusiasm.

Bhailalbhai’s narrative was music to our ears.

Krishnakant uncle and Indira auntie have become family to us, their proactive and progressive approach makes them support all our heuristic endeavours. VSSM is extremely grateful to them.

VSSM aspires to provide an emery fitted bicycle to each Saraniya who practices this traditional occupation.

Hope the universe conspires to turn this aspiration into a reality.

'તમે અમારા ખભા પરથી પંદર કિ.લો. વજન ઉતાર્યું તમારો ઘણો આભાર..'

સરાણિયા છરી ચપ્પા સજાવવાનું કામ કરે ને એ માટે ગામે ગામ વિચરણ કરે. સરાણિયા સમુદાયની ઓળખ તેમના ખભા પરનો સંચો તો ખરો પણ સંચો ઉતર્યા પછી ખભા પર પડી ગયેલા કાળા પાઠાય ખરા.

સુરેન્દ્રનગરના ભાઈલાલભાઈ કહે, 'બેન હંચો ખભે લઈ પગપાળા ગામે ગામ ફરીએ. હાલ વાહનની સગવડ થઈ ગઈ પણ અમને કોઈ રીક્ષાવાળા વાહનમાં ન બેસાડે. મૂળ હંચા સાથે અમે બે ત્રણ માણસોની જગ્યા રોકીએ ને માટે. એટલે ના છૂટકે પગગાડીથી ફરવાનું અમે કરીએ જોકે એમાં અમે ઝાઝા ગામ ફરી નો હકીએ..

સાયકલ પર હેમરી ગોઠવાય તો અમે એક શું પાંચ ગામ ફરી હકીએ. પણ અમારા માટે આવું વિચાર કોણ કરે?

ભલુ થશો આ ્ક્રિષ્ણકાંત કાકાનું તે એમણે અમારો ભાર હેઠો ઉતાર્યો'

સરાણિયા પરિવારોને સાયકલ પર ધાર કાઢવાની હેમરી ગોઠવી આપવાનું અમે ક્રિષ્ણકાંત મહેતા તેમજ ડો. ઈન્દિરા મહેતાની મદદથી કર્યું. 

ભાઈલાલભાઈ કહે, 'અમારે હવે ઘરનું વાહન થઈ ગ્યું. ચાકા હજાવવા તો પાંચ ગામ ફરાશે પણ ઘરવાળીને સાયકલ પાછળ બેસાડી અમે બજારેય જઈ શકીશું'

કેવી સરસ વાત.. સાંભળીને રાજી થવાયું. 

ક્રિષ્ણકાંત અંકલ ને આન્ટી તો અમારા એવા સ્વજન થઈ ગયા છે કે કોઈ પણ નવા પ્રયોગાત્મક કામ માટે અમે એમને કહી શકીએ છીએ.. ને તેઓ હંમેશાં મદદ પણ કરે છે. તમારા બેઉ પ્રત્યે કૃતજ્ઞતા. 

છરી ચપ્પુની ધાર કાઢવા સંચો લઈ ફરતા તમામ સરાણિયાને તેમની ભાષામાં કહુ તો ઘરનું સાધન કરી આપવાની અમારી ભાવાના..

કુદરત આ સ્વપ્નને પૂર્ણ કરાવે તેવી અભ્યર્થના...

Nomadic families came to see off Mittal Patel 

“Generations before us have spent their lives wandering, will that end with us? Ben, when will we have a house to call our own?”

Questioned the 109 Saraniya and Gadaliya families of Amreli’s Bagasra.  

The efforts led by VSSM helped get them an order for sanctioning of plots but the documents for the allotment of plots basis which they can apply for avail assistance for construction of the house are still pending. VSSM’s Rameshbhai continuously strives to get the sanad issued hopefully, his efforts will soon bring a positive outcome. 

These families, along with Devchandbhai who works with marginalised farmers had been insisting that I visit Bagasara hence, I paid a special visit. 

But it rained a lot that day. Finally, two Gadaliya families brought their shanties together to accommodate and enable all of us to sit and have an indoor meeting. 

The families need to wander a lot in search of livelihood, they asked us to help them find solutions to ease this continuous wandering. Of course, we will do that. 

Once the meeting was over, all of them came to see me off while it continued to rain profusely. I feel blessed to receive so much affection from all. 

સદીઓ રઝળપાટમાં ગઈ બેન હવે તો ઘર થાશે?

આવું અમરેલીના બગસરાના સરાણિયા અને ગાડલિયાના 109 પરિવારોએ પુછ્યું. 

VSSMની મદદથી તેમને રહેવા પ્લોટના હુકમ મળ્યા. પણ સનદ મળી નથી. મૂળ સનદ મળે તો તેમને મકાન સહાય મળી શકે ને તેમના ઘરો બાંધવાનું થાય. 

સનદ મળે તે માટે અમારા કાર્યકર રમેશભાઈ કે જેઓ સતત આ પરિવારોના કલ્યાણ માટે મથે તેમણે અરજી કરી છે. આશા રાખીએ પરિણામ ઝટ મળે. 

આ પરિવારો બગસરા આવવા ઘણો આગ્રહ કરે એમાં બગસરા માં ખેડૂતો વંચિતો સાથે કામ કરતા દેવચંદભાઈનો આગ્રહ પણ ખરો. એટલે ખાસ જવાનું થયું. 

પણ વરસાદ ઘણો..

છેવટે ગાડલિયાના બે પરિવારોએ પોતાના છાપરાં એક કર્યા ને એમાં બેઠક થઈ. 

કામ ધંધાની શોધમાં આ પરિવારોએ ઝાઝો રઝળપાટ કરવો પડે છે. તે એ દિશામાં મદદરૃપ થવા આ પરિવારોએ કહ્યું.. ખેર એ તો કરવું જ રહ્યું..

બેઠક પત્યા પછી મૂશળધાર વરસાદમાં પલળતા આ બધા છેક વળાવવા આવ્યા. તેમના આવા પ્રેમ માટે આભાર...

‘Ben, even the birds have a nest to fly back home, please do something so that we have our own nests too!!” Navghanbhai Saraniyaa from Amreli’s Bagasara would urge me each time he would meet me. We had filed applications for allotment of residential plots to these families but seems the time wasn’t ripe.

The current district collector is an extremely compassionate and proactive individual. He is also trying hard to adhere to our CM’s pledge of ‘housing for all’. Recently, he conducted a draw to decide which of the 112 Saraniya, Gadaliya and Devipujak nomads from Bagasara will be the first to receive the plots. In coming days the selected families will be handed over the documents to their plots.

Finally, after years of wait, these families will be receiving permanent plots to build their permanent nests. A decent nest, isn’t it something we all strive for?

પંખીઓન માળા હોય એમ અમારા માળા થાય એવું કાંક કરો બેન..

અમરેલીના બગસરામાં રહેતા નવઘણભાઈ સરાણિયા જ્યારે પણ મળે ત્યારે સતત આ વાત કર્યા કરે.

અમે રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ મળે તેની અરજી કરેલી. પણ સમય બરાબર પાક્યો નહોતો.

હાલના કલેક્ટર શ્રી બહુ ભલા માણસ. વળી રાજ્યના મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીનો પ્રકલ્પ આવા પરિવારોને ઘર આપવાનો. એટલે બગસરામાં રહેતા 112 વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારો જેમાં સરાણિયા, ગાડલિયા અને દેવીપૂજકોને પ્લોટની ફાળવણી પહેલાં ક્યા નંબરનો પ્લોટ ફાળવાશે તે અંગેનો ડ્રો કલેક્ટર શ્રી દ્વારા કરવામાં આવ્યો. આગામી દિવસોમાં આ પરિવારોમાં જે નંબરના પ્લોટ મળ્યા છે તે નંબર સાથેની સનદ પણ મળશે.

કેટલા વર્ષોની મહેનત પછી આ પરિવારો પોતાની જગ્યા ભેગા થશે.

ભાર મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી, સામાજિક ન્યાય અને અધિકારીતા મંત્રી શ્રી ઈશ્વરભાઈ પરમાર, કલેક્ટર શ્રી તેમજ અમરેલી વહીવટીતંત્રનો...આપની લાગણીના લીધે જ આ બધુ શક્ય બન્યું.

અમારા કાર્યકર રમેશભાઈએ આ પરિવારોને પુરાવા એકત્રીત કરી આપવાથી લઈને તેમને પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે ખુબ મહેનત કરી. રમેશની આ મહેનત લેખે લાગી.

 “Do you have any knives to be sharpened, bring them, we are here!!” A heavy Saran loaded on their shoulders, mostly  travelling on feet, from village to village, shouting at the top of our voice. This is the image of  Saraniyaa or the Knife sharpeners most of us carry in our memory. The Saraniyaa families, with their entire household loaded on a bullock cart, travelling from village to village have now  settled on government wastelands. VSSM has been assisting them at various levels including processing  the applications and acquisition of residential plots.

We recently organised a gathering of Saraniyaa Community leaders at Anandpar in Morbi. The community leaders shared their woes, the general apathy and gratitude towards  the warmth and support they receive from VSSM’s committed team members Kanubhai and Chayabahen. “Bahen, we were unable to find one document. The entire village was against our residing in the village. Kanubhai and Chayabahen stood beside us  like a rock and asked the village to provide us land for permanent settlement.”

VSSM’s team has been instrumental in bringing hope, spreading joy in the lives of thousands of nomadic families. Only the fortunate are blessed with  strong, devoted and hardworking team. It is a team that brings laurels to VSSM and me. I feel immensely fortunate and proud to be a part of such a team.

Since several years, Takhubhagat has been residing on a small hill at some distance from Anandpar. Some individuals in the village were against granting permeant settlement to him. During the gathering we requested the village Sarpanch and other leaders to participate in the meeting. The case was presented and Sarpanch agreed to providing land to the families.

We also talked about the need for deaddiction, sending children to school, general awareness amongst the community. “VSSM is our guardian, never  ever leave our side.” Such sentiments are truly overwhelming.

“Only the worthy can wear a  Paghdi/head-gear, it is not for everyone,” said Takhubhagat while placing the Paghadi on my head. Indeed, a true honour!!


ખભે ભારેભરખમ સરાણ લઈને ગામે ગામ છરી ચાકા હજાબ્બા હોય તો....ની બૂમ પાડતા સરાણિયાને તમે દીઠા હશે...

ગાડા લઈને એક ગામથી બીજે ફર્યા કરતા આ સરાણિયા પરિવારો આજે સરકારી ખરાબાની જગ્યામાં સ્થાયી થયા છે. સરકાર પાસે રહેવા પોતાના નામનો પ્લોટ તેમજ પોતાની ઓળખના તમામ પુરાવા મળે એ માટેની મથામણ VSSM સાથે રહી તેઓ કરી રહ્યા છે..

આવા સરાણિયા સમાજના આગેવાનોની એક બેઠક મોરબી જિલ્લાના આણંદપરમાં અમે કરી. બેઠકમાં સૌએ પોતાની વેદના વ્યક્ત કરી સાથે સંસ્થાના સંનિષ્ઠ કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ અને છાયાબહેન થકી મળતી હૂંફની પણ વાત કરી.'બેન એક કાગળિયું જડતું નહોતું, ગામ આખુ અમારા વસાવટ હામે વિરોધ કરતું ન્યાં કનુભાઈ અને છાયાબહેન અમારી પડખે રીયા અને આજે ગામે અમને રેવા હાટુ જમીન આપવાની કીધું..

'VSSMના કાર્યકરો થકી હજારો પરિવારોને સુખ અપાવવામાં નિમિત્ત બનવાનું થયું છે. મજબૂત કાર્યકરોની આવી ટીમ મળવી નસીબની વાત છે.. મને ગર્વ છે તમામ કાર્યકર પર જેમના થકી હું અને VSSM ઊજળા છીએ...

વર્ષોથી તખુભગત આણંદપરગામથી દૂર ટેકરા પર છાપરાં નાખીને રહેતા.. ગામ રહેવા કાયમી જગ્યા આપેની માંગ એમની વર્ષોની પણ ગામના કેટલાક આ બાબતે સહમત નહોતા.

સરાણિયા સમાજના આગેવાનોની બેઠકમાં ગામના સરપંચ અને અન્ય આગેવાનોને અમે ઉપસ્થિત રાખ્યા અને સરપંચ શ્રીએ જમીન આપવાની સહમતી દર્શાવી.

સરાણિયા આગેવાનોએ આ બેઠકમાં પોતાના સમાજમાં વધારે જાગૃતતા આવે, બાળકો ભણતા થાય તેમજ વ્યસન મુક્ત સમાજ બેને તે માટે પ્રયત્નો કરવાની વાત કરી અને સૌથી અગત્યનું 'સંસ્થા અમારી માવતર અમારો હાથ ઝાલી રાખજો'ની એમની વાત પર નતમસ્તક થવાયું.. કનુભાઈ છાયાબહેન, વાધાભાઈ, તખુભગત સૌની કટીબદ્ધતાના લીધે આ બેઠક સુંદર રીતે પૂર્ણ થઈ... પાઘડી બધાને નો પહેરાવાય.. લાયકને જ પહેરાવાય એવું કહીને તખુભગતે પાઘડી પહેરાવી...એમણે આપેલી આ ઈજ્જત માટે કૃતજ્ઞતાભાવ...

Collector Shri distributes caste certificate to nomadic'families

 “Why do you travel so much? You now have a team, why is the need for you to travel so much!!” I am often asked.

“It is the my travels through the countryside, the areas we work that enables me understand the real India, the people and communities that give India it’s identity, comprehend their everyday struggles!!”

It is not just me, the government officials, authorities, ministers, leaders all travel to understand the people they represent. However,  their entourage and official protocol limits their ability to mingle with the communities. The police and security  that  surround our political leaders and bureaucrats intimidates the communities to reach out to them.

The Surendranagar district collector Shri K Rajesh however, is moving and interacting with the communities in a completely  informal manner. A very different approach from a senior official of his level. Even if his officials fail to reach on time, Shri Rajesh is invariably present on the decided place and begins his day by listening to the problems of the poor and marginalised  people of the district he is entrusted with. Everyone talks to him without any inhibitions. The people do not hold back on their grievances,  complaints or appreciations

“He is our man, we can share anything to him,” they say in chorus. This is a huge achievement for any  district collector.

An official was unnecessarily delaying the issuance of caste certificates to the Saraniya and Devipujak families of Chuda. A phone call reaches Shri Rajesh who then  instructs his official to make a visit  to the place of residence and issue the certificate. “I too will remain present when you visit the place,” he tells. Obviously, the official had to work in the direction.

Finally, two days back the families who had been awaiting caste certificate for years,   received it from the hands of Shri K Rajesh himself.  He insists on going to the settlement so that his officials take a cue from his actions and begin to embrace this poor  communities. And Surendranagar district bureacary is witnessing this change. Now, one can see authorities interacting with the communities more often.

 During a small function we had organised for the distribution of caste certificates VSSM’s Harshad mentioned, “K. Rajesh Saheb has promised to allot residential plots to 500 nomadic families after Diwali…” before he could continue any further Shri Rajesh interrupted, “Not after,  but before Diwali!!” 

Honestly, no one has ever given such a gift to these families… Thank you for such a thoughtful commitment. Thank you for embracing these poorest of poor families.

મને ઘણા કહે, હજુ તમે આટલો બધો પ્રવાસ કેમ કરો છો.. હવે તો તમારી સાથે આખી ટીમ છે...

ઘણા દ્વારા પુછાતા આ પ્રશ્નના જવાબમાં હું કહુ છું, ઓફીસ છોડી ફીલ્ડમાં રખડુ છુ એટલે જ મને સાચુ ભારત સમજાય છે અને એની તકલીફો પણ...

વહીવટીતંત્રમાં બેઠેલા અધિકારી, નેતા પણ પોતાની રીતે ગામડાંઓમાં ફરે.. લોકોને મળે.. પણ એ વેળા એ પ્રોટોકોલથી આરક્ષીત હોય છે.. પોલીસ અને અન્ય પદાધિકારીઓથી એ ધેરાયેલા હોય છે એટલે ઈચ્છીત વાત બેય પક્ષે થતે નથી..

પણ કલેક્ટર સુરેન્દ્રનગર કે રાજેશ.. બહુ જુદી રીતે લોકોની વચ્ચે ફરી રહ્યા છે..

પોતાનું વહીવટીતંત્ર નિર્ધારીત સમયે પહોંચે કે ના પહોંચે, પોતે તો પહોંચી જ જાય અને શરૃઆત થાય લોકોની તકલીફો સાંભળવાની...

સૌ ખુલ્લા મને કલેક્ટર શ્રી સામે બોલવા માંડે....

'અમારો માણસ છે બધુયે એમને કહેવાય' એવું લોકો હવે કે રાજેશ માટે કહી રહ્યા છે. મારે મન કલેક્ટર શ્રીએ મેળવેલી આ સૌથી મોટી ઉપલબ્ધી છે...

ચુડામાં રહેતા સરાણિયા તેમજ દેવીપૂજક પરિવારોને જાતિ પ્રમાણપત્ર આપવામાં ક્યાંક કોઈ અધિકારી ઠાગાઠૈયા કરે કે કે.રાજેશનો ફોન જાય. સ્થળ તપાસ કરીને પ્રમાણપત્રો આપો.. હું પોતે પણ હાજર રહીશ એવું ફરમાન પણ કરે.. પછી તો કામ થવાનું જ..

બે દિવસ પહેલાં વર્ષોથી પ્રમાણપત્ર માટે વલખાં મારતા ફોટોમાં દેખાય એ પરિવારોને પ્રમાણપત્ર આપવા એમની વસાહતમાં એ ગયા..

વસાહતમાં જવાનો આગ્રહ રાખવાનું કારણ પોતાના અધિકારીઓ પણ વંચિતોના દ્વારે જતા થાય તે..

પ્રમાણપત્ર વિતરણ વખતે અમારા કાર્યકર હર્ષદે કહ્યું, સાહેબનો સંકલ્પ છે દિવાળી પછી 500 વિચરતી વિમુક્ત જાતિઓને રહેવા પ્લોટ આપવાનો... હર્ષદ આગળ કશું બોલે તે પહેલાં સાહેબે એને અટકાવ્યો અને કહ્યું,

'દિવાળી પછી નહીં પહેલાં..'

ખરેખર આવી ભેટ આ પરિવારોને કોઈએ નથી આપી..

થેક્યુ આવી સુંદર ભેટનો સંકલ્પ કરવા બદલ અને ઝૂંપડે ઝૂંપડે ગાંધીજીએ જેને દરિદ્રનારાયણ કહ્યા છે તેમની વચ્ચે ફરવા બદલ...

તમે અમારા સૌ માટે આદર્શ અને પ્રિય છો....

Mittal Patel visits nomadic settlement of Morbi

“Ben, when would you visit our house? When you are in Morbi this time please come to our home else we will get upset!!”

Morbi’s Rameshbhai Saraniya has been insisting for years, but visiting their house never materialised.  

We had been requesting District Collector of Morbi to organise a joint meeting for redressing the pending matters of nomadic and de-notified communities. The meeting happened and we were in Morbi to attend the same.

VSSM’s Chayaben had arranged a visit to 2 settlements one of which happened to be Rameshbhai’s.

Rameshbhai and family were so enthused that a homemade scrumptious meal awaited us as we reached their home.

“For years we have waited for this moment!!” Look at the house I was able to build for my family. It was because of you that we made this effort, you gave us that understanding to settle down. If it wasn’t for you we would still be wandering aimlessly.”

The living condition of nomads

It brings joy to listen and witness the progress these families make. But the living conditions and their surrounding environs really bother us at times. The road to Rameshbhai’s house was filled with rubbish and sewage drain. The refused water that gets  accumulated was a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Crossing that open sewage drain required some acrobatic skills. During monsoons the drain would overflow and flood the homes on its periphery. Once the water recede mosquitoes and flies would enjoy a gala time.  The house would keep getting littered with everyone who walked through the drain. The food had 100% chances of getting infected by the flies all around.     

“How can you stay here, Ramesbhai?”

“What can we do, ben? People like you can see our difficulties, who else is bothered to even think about us? You just help us settle down well!!”

We have requested the District Collector to expedite the process of land allotment to these families.

Let us see how it goes. We  for sure have pledged to not remove these families from here as soon as possible.

We are grateful for Chayaben and Kanubhai who reach and identify such families.

'બેન મારે ઘીરે ક્યારે પધારશો? આલીખા મોરબી આવો તો અમારા ન્યાં આવવું જ પડશે નકર અમે નારાજ થઈ જાસું...'

મોરબીમાં રહેતા રમેશભાઈ સરાણિયા વર્ષોથી આગ્રહ કરે. પણ એમના ત્યાં જવાનું થાય નહીં.

મોરબી કલેક્ટર શ્રીને વિચરતી વિમુક્ત જાતિઓના પ્રશ્નો બાબતે બેઠક આયોજીત કરવા અમે વિનંતી કરી અને એમણે તમામ અધિકારીઓ સાથે બેઠક કરી. એટલે મોરબી જવાનું થયું.

કાર્યકર છાયાબહેનને બે વસાહતોની સ્થિતિ જોઈશું તેમ કહેલું ને એમણે અનાયાસે રમેશભાઈની વસાહતમાં જ જવાનું ગોઠવ્યું.

રમેશભાઈએ તો સેવ ટમેટાનું શાક ને બીજુયે ઘણું ભાવતું બનાવી રાખ્યું..

'વર્ષોથી રાહ જોતો તો બેન તે હવે તમે પધાર્યા ખરા...

આ જુઓ મે થોડું પાકુ ઘર કઈર્યું.. તમે હજમાવ્યો ઈમ હજમ્યો ને આ કઈર્યું. બાકી અમારા નસીબમાં તો ગાડા લઈને ભટકવાનું જ હતું.'

રમેશભાઈને સાંભળીને ઘર થ્યાનો આનંદ થયો પણ આ ઘરમાં પ્રવેશતા પહેલાં મે ઓળંગેલું ગંદા પાણીનું નાળુ અને એ નાળાની પાળ પર બાંધેલા છાપરાં ને એમાં રમેશભાઈનું આ ઘર. જીવતા નર્ક જોવું હોય તો રમેશભાઈના આ રહેણાંકને જોઈ શકાય.

વરસાદ આવે ત્યારે નાળુ ઊભરાય ને ગંદકી ઘરમાં ભરાય.

પાણી ઉતરે એટલે શરૃ થાય માખી મચ્છરોનો ઉપદ્રવ.

ખાવાના રોટલાને ઘડીક ખુલ્લો રાખે તો માખીઓ કુંડાળે વળી વાતોએ વળગી હોય એવો નજારો જોવા મળે.

નાળામાં વહેતા ગંદા પાણીમાં પગ બોળાઈ ન જાય એ માટે ઈંટો મૂકેલી પણ બેલેન્સ ના રહે તો ગંદકી પગમાં એય પાછી ગંદી વાસ સાથે ભરાય.

'આવામાં તમે કેમના રહો છો રમેશભાઈ?'

'હું કરીએ બેન. આ તમારા જેવા અમારી ભાળ કાઢે બાકી કુને પડી હોય આંયા આવાની. હવે અમને થાળે પાડી દ્યો બસ..'

કલેક્ટર સાહેબને આ પરિવારોને ઝટ જમીન ફાળવવા વિનંતી કરી છે.

જોઈએ શું થાય છે

પણ આ પરિવારોને આવી ગંદકીમાં ઝાઝુ નહીં રહેવા દેવાનો નિર્ધાર પાક્કો...

છાયાબહેન અને કનુભાઈ અમારા કાર્યકરો આવા તકલીફમાં જીવતા માણસોને શોધી કાઢે છે.. એ બંનેને આભાર..

“Ben, whenever we are asked which village we belong to, we feel  embarrassed  to reveal that we belong to Vadia. Out village has always carried a bad image. And we want to change that image, wipe off that stigma. We are ready to work hard and with your support we want to change that image!!”

After our work in Vadia, such words seem like music to our ears. When the youth of the village is prepared to work towards change, one knows for sure that better times lie in the horizon.

In 1963, government had allotted 205 acres of land to the women of Vadia. The land was in such poor condition that the families could never work on it to make it productive. The administration tried giving farming incentives from time to time however, as the efforts were not continuous enough the desired results were never achieved.

Since 2005,  VSSM has been consistently working towards improving the ground realities in Vadia and our persistence has begun  paying off. Vadia, that was once arid and barren now looks lush with green farms all around. The families have also began taking interest free  loans from us to begin cattle farming and dairy.

Bhikhabhai obtained loan from VSSM to buy buffalos. He intends to have a large cattle shade. After hearing the inspiring story of Lalabhai Raval who has had a successful venture with cow rearing and dairy after taking interest free loan from VSSM Bhikhabhai also plans to replicate his model in Vadia with addition of cows to his cattle wealth.

“Ben anywhere we are,  the waiting cattle compels us to return home by 4 PM. We have to return on time for them, milk them and take the milk to the dairy. Our thoughts are now focused towards our cattle.” Mukesh shared with a smile on his face.

Once the youth of Vadia begins working to earn money the hard way  and the daughters continue to get married, no one from Vadia will face embarrassment to share the name of the village they belong to.

Yes, for sure we will be creating a Vadia of our dreams pretty soon.

'અમે કોઈ ગોમમાં જઈએ અન ગોમના કોઈ પુસ ક ચોના તો અમે કહી નઈ હકતા ક અમે ચોના સીએ. બેન ગોમની જે ખરાબ સાપ પડી હ ઈન ભૂંસવી હ.

તમે સાથ આલો અમે મેનત કરશું પણ હવ ગોમની સાપ બદલાવવી હ એ નક્કી.'

વાડિયાના ભીખાભાઈ અને મુકેશની વાત સાંભળી રાજી થવાયું.

ગામના યુવાનો કામ કરતા થાય તેનાથી રૃડુ શું હોઈ શકે?

વાડિયામાં રહેતી બહેનોને સરકારે 205 એકર જમીન 1963માં આપેલી પણ બાવળના જંગલથી ભરી પડેલી આ જમીન પર તેઓ કશું કરી નહોતા શક્યા. 

સરકારે વખતો વખત કોશીશ કરી પણ સતત પ્રયત્નો ના થતા ઈચ્છીત પરિણામ ના મળ્યું.

2005માં પહેલીવાર વાડિયા જવાનું થયું એ પછી VSSM દ્વારા થયેલા સતત પ્રયત્નોના કારણે નક્કર બદલાવ આવવા માંડ્યો છે.

એક વખતનું સુક્કુ ભઠ્ઠ વાડિયા આજે લીલુછમ દેખાવા માંડ્યું છે. લોકો ખેતી કરતા થયા છે અને ખેતીની જમીન હોવાના લીધે અમારી પાસેથી લોન લઈને લોકો પશુપાલન કરતા થયા છે.

ભીખાભાઈ એ VSSMની મદદથી ભેંસો ખરીદી છે. તેમની ઈચ્છા મોટો તબેલો કરવાની છે. 

ભેંસો લાવ્યા પણ સંસ્થામાંથી લોન લઈને બે પાંદડે થયેલા લાલાભાઈ રાવળને જોઈને તેમણે ગાયો લાવવાનું પણ નક્કી કર્યું છે.

મુકેશ હસતા હસતા કહે છે, 

'બેન હવ તો બારા ચોક જઈએ તોય ચાર પેલા ઘેર પોંગવાની ચિંતા રે. ભેંસ દોવાની, દૂધ ડેરીમોં ભરાબ્બાનું આ બધા સિવાયના એકેય વિચારો હાલ અમારા મનમોં નહીં હેડતા.'

ગામના યુવાનો મહેતન કરતા થાય, ગામની દરેક દિકરી પરણતી થાય તો અમે વાડિયાના છીએ એવું કહેતા કોઈ વાડિયાવાસીને શરમ નહીં આવે એ નક્કી...અને હા અમે એવું વાડિયા બહુ ઝડપથી નિર્માણ કરીશું એ પણ નક્કી....

બદલાવ ઈચ્છતા યુવાન ભીખાભાઈ સાથે ફોટો લેવાનું મન તો મને અને મુંબઈથી આવેલા આદરણીય રશ્મીભાઈને થાય જ ફોટોમાં ભીખાભાઈ સાથે અને તેમણે કરેલો ભેંસોનો નાનકડો તબેલો..

“Ben, by marrying off two of my daughters today and assigning one in your care, I have fulfilled my promise given to you. I have no worries. Even death  does not scare me now.”  Rameshbhai’s eyes welled up as he talked to me today at his daughter Krishna’s marriage ceremony.

Vadia, a village whose traditional occupation is absolutely unaccepted seldom treats its daughters with respect and care, but once the daughter is married or engaged she is never forced into the hellish traditional occupation of prostitution.

Rameshbhai had promised me to never force his daughters into prostitution when he first met me in 2005. I had the right to correct him because he considers me  his sister.

The pimps active in Vadia tried their level best to lure Rameshbhai into the trap, but he remained undeterred like a  rock. Both his kidneys failed, the medications pushed him to the brink of survival. VSSM’s Shardaben and his elder brother Bababhai worked tirelessly to bring him to Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital and get his kidney transplanted. Right now, he is on medication that is taken managed  by VSSM’s President Shri Madhavbhai  Ramanuj.

Apart from the physical trauma due to such life threatening ailment Rameshbhai also passed through severe mental trauma, but even under such dire circumstances he remained undeterred in his commitment to protect his daughters and ensured they get  married.

The ceremony wouldn’t have been possible without the support of VSSM’s largehearted family. The entire expense of the wedding ceremony was supported by respected Shri Morari Bapu. The kitchenware in the trousseau has been gifted by Shri Somabhai Patel. We have provided all that you can see in the pictures to Krishna and Kalpana. Apart from this,  to help them earn and live with dignity we have committed a buffalo each to both of them.

The Sarpanch of Khanpur Shri Nagjibhai has been assigned with the responsibility of finding a good buffalos. The costs of buffalo are very high currently hence, we plan to purchase them once the prices come down.

I am grateful to all those who stood with us and have wished well for Vadia.

Respected Bapu, all of these wouldn’t have been possible without your support. I am grateful for your support.

Shardaben, our backbone for Vadia who constantly worries for the community needs to be commended for her untiring efforts in Vadia.

વાડિયા માં એકવાર ફેર ઢોલ ઢમક્યાં.....

'બેન મે આપેલું વચન આજે પૂરું કર્યું. મારી બે દીકરી પરણાવી અને એક તમને સોંપી. હવે હાલ મોત આવે તોય મને ચિંતા નથી '

વાડિયાના રમેશભાઈ સરાણિયાની આંખો આજે દીકરી ક્રિષ્ના ના લગન વખતે આ કહેતા કહેતા ભરાઈ આવી.

વાડિયા જ્યાની પરંપરા દીકરીઓ માટે ક્યારેક ના સ્વીકારાય એવી. દેહવ્યાપારના કલંક ગામની દીકરીઓના માથે લખાતા હોય એવા વાડિયામાં જે દીકરીની એક વખત લગ્ન કે સગાઈ થાય એ ક્યારેય આવા નર્કમાં ધકેલાતી નથી.

રમેશભાઈને ૨૦૦૫ માં મળેલી અને એ વખતે જ એમણે પોતાની દીકરીઓને આ નર્કાગાર માં નહિ ધકેલવાનું વચન આપેલું. મને બહેન માને એટલે થોડા વિશેષ અધિકાર ભાવ પણ બંને તરફ હોય... પણ છેવટે તો બધુંયે હકારાત્મક.

કેવી લાલચો સામે આવી પણ એ બધાને એમણે ઠોકર મારી.

બે કિડની બગડી. દવામાં ખૂબ ખર્ચ થયો. Vssm ના કાર્યકર શારદાબેન અને મોટાભાઈ બાબા ભાઈ સાથે રમેશભાઈ ને માંડ કિડની હોસ્પિટલ લાવ્યા અને કિડની ટ્રાન્સપ્લાન્ટ કરાવ્યું. હાલે દવા ચાલે પણ દવાનું બધું vssm ના પ્રમુખ માધવભાઇ રામાનુજ સાચવે. 

આર્થિક રીતે કમર તૂટી ગયેલી. ત્યારેય આવેલી લાલચોથી એ પર રહ્યા અને ખરા અર્થમાં એમણે દીકરીના બાપને છાજે એમ દીકરીઓને સંસાર મંડાવ્યા.

લગ્ન ખર્ચમાં સહયોગ પૂજ્ય મોરારી બાપુ એ આપ્યો. દીકરીને ભેટમાં વાસણ માટે સોમાભાઈ પટેલ સહયોગ આપ્યો. તેમનો આભાર વ્યક્ત કરું છું. દીકરી ક્રિષ્ના અને કલ્પનાને લગનમાં ફોટોમાં દેખાય છે એ સાધન સામગ્રી તો આપી. સાથે બેય દીકરીઓ સાસરીમાં સ્વમાનભેર જીવી શકે એ માટે બેયને ભેંસ આપવાનું વચન પણ આપ્યું.

ખાનપુરના સરપંચ નાગજી ભાઈને ભેંસ લાવવાની જવાબદારી સોંપી. હાલ ભેંસોની કિંમત વધારે છે ઓછી થતાં જ બેય દીકરીના ઘરે ભેંસ બંધાશે.

વાડિયા માં બદલાવ માટે મથતા સૌ સ્વજનો પાસે આજે રાજીપો વ્યક્ત કરું છું.

પૂજય બાપુ નો આભાર માનું છું એમની મદદ વગર આ બધું અસંભવ હતું...

અમારા કાર્યકર શારદાબેન સતત વાડિયા માં રહેતા માણસોની ચિંતા સેવે અને એમને મદદ કરે એમની લાગણી ને પ્રણામ.

અને રમેશભાઈ તમે ભાઈ તરીકે આપેલું વચન નિભાવ્યું એનો આનંદ.. સાથે વાડિયા ની તમામ દીકરીના બાપ તમારા જેવા થાય એવી આશા રાખું છું.
