It’s time we give back all that we have lynched from nature….

Imagine life without air and water!!! We inherited an earth full of dense forest, thriving flora, fauna and abundant of water all around. Civilizations birthed and shaped around water.

Water is the most precious element on earth. And conserving water was of primary importance in the past. In water scarce areas making special provisions for water,  like step wells, well, lakes was considered to be a noble work. Communities and village elders took care of common  water sources. They followed an annual calendar of cleaning and desilting  village wells and lakes. Even today,  providing water to the thirsty is considered to be the most righteous work. And this is true to the core. A task like deepening and desilting lake benefits not just the humans but the birds and animals, trees and earth…

VSSM has taken up the task of desilting the lakes of Banaskantha, a water starved district of Gujarat. It carries this task with support from its well-wishing friends,  by partnering with the village leadership. The village communities are explained the reason of falling water levels and how they can contribute to VSSM’s efforts. Whereever the communities have comprehended our efforts the entire task is accomplished with ease and work brings desired results.

Recently,  we were in Kankrej block’s Padardi village. The village has agreed to lift the excavated mud but we would be happier if they agreed to raise money and  contribute to this effort just like Mudetha, Khadol and many other villages did.

We have to think collectively on giving back all that we have extorted from soil , we are grateful to all of you who have joined hands in this task of immense public service.

Naranbhai has been careful in selecting villages that are prepared to cooperate and contribute. The will to join hands in meaningful and constructive activities eases lots of challenges that usually  emerge once the work starts. Thank you Naranbhai for the thought you put in each task.

તારુ દીધેલું વાલા તુજને ધરાવું....

પાણી અને શુદ્ધ હવા વગર જીવવું અશક્ય. પૃથ્વી બની ત્યારે જંગલ આચ્છાદીત હતી. 

પાણીના સ્ત્રોતો પણ જ્યાં હતા ત્યાં ભરપુર હતા. પણ જ્યાં પાણી બારેમાસ મળવાનું સંભવ નહોતું ત્યા માણસે પાણી સંગ્રહ માટે શું થઈ શકે તે વિચારી વાવ, કુવા, તળાવો ગાળવાનું કર્યું.

અને વખતો વખત તળાવો ગળાતા રહ્યા. ને એનો ફાયદો સૌ મેળવતા રહ્યા. 

આજેય તળાવ ગળાવવા એ કોઈ યજ્ઞથી કમ નથી એવું ગામલોકો કહે છે.

પાપ પુણ્યનો હિસાબ માંડીએ તો લોકો કહે, તળાવ ગળાવવામાં મદદરૃપ થવું એનાથી મોટુ કોઈ પુણ્ય નથી... આ વાત સો ટકા સાચી. તળાવથી માનવ વસતિને તો ફાયદો થાય સાથે સાથે પશુપંખી, ઝાડ પાન બધાયને ફાયદો...

આ ફાયદાની વાતો કરીને તળાવો ઊંડા કરવા ને સાથે ગામ પણ પોતોનું યથા યોગ્ય દાન આપે એ માટે આપણે ગામને સમજાવીએ છીએ.

જે સમજે ત્યાં રૃડુ કામ થઈ રહ્યું છે.

તાજેતરમાં બનાસકાંઠાના કાંકરેજ તાલુકાના પાદરડીગામમાં તળાવ ગાળવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.

માટી ઉપાડવાનું ગામે પોતાના માથે લીધુ. આ વાતથી તો રાજી. પણ ગામ પોતે પણ તળાવ ગાળવા મૂડેઠા, ખડોલ ગામની જેમ ફાળો ભેગો કરે તો વધુ રાજી થઈશું.

તારુ દીધેલું વાલા તુજને ધરાવું એ વાત સાર્થક કરવાનો સમય હવે આવી ગ્યો છે.

ધરતીના પેટાળની ચિંતા ખેડુત નહીં કરે તો કોણ કરશે....

VSSMના કાર્યકર નારણભાઈએ સુંદર રીતે તળાવ ખોદાવવા રાજી હોય તેવા ગામોનું ચયન કર્યુ ને એટલે સહમતી હોય ત્યાં કામ સરળ થયું. આભાર દોસ્ત..

Commedable support of People of Raviyana…

There is a proverb in Gujarati that if the god loses his way, he should get lost in Saurashtra. But now it feels like telling him that he should end up reaching North Gujarat if he loses his way because VSSM is doing water management work with such amazing people and villages. Moreover, work with nomads and deprived people is going on in a different way with the water management work.  

Kankrej is a small village of Kankrej Taluka. There are 100 farmers in the village and land is of 1000 vighas. There was continuous exhumation of water so the underground water levels are terribly low.

As soon as the water levels go deeper, farmers like my father, put the pipe in the bore. But they never worry that there is water scarcity or the time when there will be no water at all. Narmada was proven to be a lifeline. The water of the canal filled Hethvu lake of the village and the farmers put the pipes in it and started irrigation. But this time, there is less water in Narmada. If the lake is slightly bigger and that also well dug, then it will be more beneficial. The underground water levels will also go up.

People of Raviyana came to know about VSSM’s water management work and they requested our fieldworker Naranbhai. We had a precondition that the village will provide the tractors. But the people of Raviyana did not have sufficient tractors. Also, the farmers also were not possessing that much land. But they had this wish to deepen the lake. So, they did not request us but they first gave us the cheque of Rs. 1 Lakh. They are collecting more money too. They never had the tendency to have benefits without any contribution.   

The government does start the Sujalam Sufalam Yojana, but they should have done it thoughtfully. They could have got the work done in a better way. They still have time but it is a matter of desire.  

We got remarkable love from the fvillage. “Ben, now when you come, have food with us. We will give all the support you want.” You are doing the pure work, said Bharmalbhai and Sarpanch. We felt very happy hearing that.

We talked about the concept of Ideal Village. Can’t we try and forget the caste barriers and look forward to the development of each and every individual? We told them that we want to go visit an Ideal village and learn from that, this also was appreciated by the village. They said, “we are happy with your work. You are working selflessly. We will do what you want us to do. We will come and visit the Ideal village and we will do it in the village too.”

During the lake digging, a very approachable and nice MLA of Kankrej Kirtisinhji came and he encouraged the people.

One Uncle whose name I have forgotten said, “whatever homework you will give, we will do…”

From 3 degrees cold of Netherlands and France, I found this thing sweet in 45 degrees of heat of Banaskantha.

ગુજરાતી અનુવાદ 

સૌરાષ્ટ્રમાં ભૂલો પડ ભગવાન આ દુહામાં હવે થોડો ઉમેરો કરીને અમારા ઉત્તર ગુજરાતમાંય ભૂલો પણ એવું કહેવાનું મન થાય એવા અદભૂત ગામો ને લોકો સાથે અત્યારે જળસંચયના કામ VSSM દ્વારા થઈ રહ્યા છે. વળી જળસંચયના માધ્યમથી ગામના વિચરતી જાતિને તમામ વંચિતોના કામોય જરા જુદી રીતે થઈ રહ્યા છે.

રવિયાણા કાંકરેજ તાલુકાનું નાનું ગામ. ગામમાં ખેડુત ખાતેદારો સો જેટલા ને ખેતીની જમીન લગભગ હજાર વિધા. સતત ઊલેચા પાણીના લીધે પાણીના તળની તો અહીંયા કોઈ વાત જ ના થાય. બોરવેલથી પાણી મળે ને તળ ઊંડા જાય એટલે મારા પપ્પાની જેમ જ દરેક ખેડુત બે કે એક પાઈપ બોરમાં ઉતારી દે. પણ ક્યારેય પાણી ખુટી રહ્યા છે ને સાવ ખુટી જશે એની ચિંતા ના કરે. નર્મદા જીવાદોરી સાબિત થઈ. કેનાલમાંથી ગામના ‘હેઠવું’ તળાવમાં પાણી નંખાયુ ને ખેડુતો પાઈપો નાખી જુલાઈથી લઈને માર્ચ સુધી આ તળાવમાંથી સિંચાઈ કરે. પણ તળાવ છીછરુ એટલે પાણી ભરાઈ ના રહે. 

વળી આ વખતે નર્મદાના નીર ખુટ્યા. જો તળાવ મોટુ હોત તો થોડો વધુ ફાયદો થાય ને વળી પાછુ ખોદાય તો જમીનમાંય પાણી ઉતરે ને તળ ઊંચા આવે.

VSSM દ્વારા થઈ રહેલા જળસંચયના કામોની માહિતી રવિયાણાવાસીઓને મળી ને તેમણે તળાવ ઊંડા કરવા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈને વિનંતી કરી. અમારી શરત જેસીબીનો ખર્ચ અમારો ને ટ્રેક્ટરગામલોકો આપે પણ રવિયાણાના ખેડુતો પાસે ટ્રેક્ટરની ઝાઝી સગવડ નહીં. વળી અહીંયાના ખેડુતો એવા મોટા જમીનધારકો નહીં. પણ તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવાની મનસાના ને લીધે અમારી સામે કોઈ જ વિનંતી કર્યા વગર ભાડેથી ટ્રેક્ટર લાવવા એમણે પ્રથમ એકલાખનો ચેક આપ્યો ને બીજુ ભંડોળ પણ ભેગુ કરી રહ્યા છે. મજાની વાત મફતનું ખાવાની લાલચ જરાય નહીં એ.

સરકારે સુજલામ સુફલામ યોજના કરી પણ થોડું મનોમંથન કરીને ગામસાથે રહીને કામ કરવાની જરૃર હતી જો એમ થયું હોત તો ધાર્યા કરતા સરકાર ઘણું વધારે ને સુંદર કામ કરાવી શકી હોત. ખેર હજુએ સમય છે પણ સવાલ ચાહનાનો છે....

ગામના તમામનો અદભૂત પ્રેમ.. ‘બહેન હવે આવો તો અમારા ગોમમાં જ જમજોને જે જોઈએ એ સાથ

સહકાર અમે આલશ’ ની વાત. ખુબ ચોખ્ખુ કોમ સંસ્થાએ કર્યું એવું ભારમલભાઈ અને સરપંચે કહ્યું ત્યારે ખરેખર મન રાજી થયું.

આદર્શ ગામની વિભાવનાની અમે વાત કરી. નાતજાતના ભેદ ભુલી ગામના દરેકનો વિકાસ કેમ થાય એ માટેની તૈયારી આપણે કરી શકીએ?ને આપણે સૌ એવા આદર્શગામોની મુલાકાતે જઈએ ને ત્યાંથી તમે શીખો એમ ઈચ્છુછુની વાતેય એમણે વધાવી. એમણે કહ્યું, ‘અમે તમારા કોમથી ખુબ રાજી સીએ. કોઈ હવારથ વગરનું તમારુ તમારુ કોમ. તમે કો ઈમ કરીશું. ને આઈસું આદર્શ ગોમ જોવાય ન અમાર ગોમમાંય એવું જ કરીશું.’

કીર્તીસીંહજી ઉપસ્થિત રહ્યા ને અમને સૌને પ્રોત્સાહીત કર્યા.

એક કાકા નામ ભુલી ગઈ એમણે તો કહ્યું, ‘તમે જે લેશન આલશો એ કરીશું...’

નેધરલેન્ડ, ફ્રાન્સની 3 ડીગ્રીમાંથી બનાસકાંઠાની 45 ડીગ્રી આવા હેતના લીધે જ મીઠી લાગી...
