A rather long writeup but do take time out to read it!!
“Ben, I want to give you something!’ said Husainbhai while pulling out his wallet from his pocket and brings out a packet from it.
“What is it?”
“Diamond!”
“Is it real ?”
“Yes.”

“Oh! I cannot take it.”
“But I want to gift it to you. I have bought it long back, to gift to you. ”
“I appreciate your feelings, but I cannot accept it.”
This was the first time I was meeting Husainbhai. Although we have talked many times on the phone.
It was the plight of Nat families residing opposite Husainbhai’s home that brought them to know about VSSM. The plight anguished Husainbha’s father Ahmedbhai who helped them in whichever way he could. He knew these families need government support but weren’t familiar with the complex process it required. In the meantime, Ukabapa informed him about us and Ahmedbhai called us up from a hotel nearby. “Ben, these poor fellows are living in extremely sad conditions. Please try to help them. Get them the required documents because they are struggling to sustain themselves,” he had told me on the phone. I also happened to meet him once on my way to Diu. At that time Husainbhai was not even in the picture.
Once, when VSSM was invited to be part of the “Mokla Maan” program at CM’s office the communities it works for were called in. We called up Nat youth to come and share their issues and conditions at this program. Since that particular person had never stepped out he refused to come. We tried to convince him a lot. Since he did not budge I was asked to speak to Husainbhai. I irked on him for the irresponsible behaviour of the Nat youth, but he never argued or answered back. That night he spent his own money to bring few Nat youth to Gandhinagar for the meeting. Until then I did not know Husainbhai. At Gandhinagar too I wasn’t able to interact with him. Later I called up to thank him for his efforts and apologise for my anger.
A few days ago while I was in Gir he got the news of my arrival. I was looking forward to meeting Ahmedbhai hence reached their village Simasi to find Husainbhai in his nice shop. “What do you do?” I inquired.
“I run a diamond polishing enterprise that employs 80 people, plus this shop to sell tiles etc and also offer work of lace and sequins application to women around the region.”
I asked him to show me around his diamond polishing unit. It is hard to believe that an extremely unpretentious looking person runs so many enterprises. I was curious to learn more about his work!!
“Ben, so many young men have left for Surat, Ahmedabad and other bigger cities for work. They leave agriculture in search of other work. Once in the city, their life ends up cramped in a 10x10 room. My heart pains when sitting here I see women packed in shared auto heading for work in nearby towns and cities. I have decided to bring work to their doorstep. I worked hard to find unpolished diamonds. Work isn’t sufficient yet but it has been instrumental in keeping 80 men in their village, they haven’t needed to move to the city. Along with diamond polishing they also engage in farming on their land.”
Finding work for women was an issue. But when I came across merchants in Surat who was prepared to send work of lace and sequins application to Simasi, I grabbed the opportunity and have spread the word amongst 110 women. I do not earn from this!”
“Why work for the loss?”
“So that people find employment here and the distress migration towards the cities stops.”
“How can anyone help you with these efforts?”
“If someone helps build a large room in Simasi it will help women to work at one place, I can monitor the quality of their work. Also if someone gives us work for diamond polishing. More people can be employed. I do not benefit much but I want to do it for everyone else.”
I promised him to share his story. Who knows some Samaritan might come forward to support him.
Husainbhai’s efforts to revive the crumbling and dying villages are worth applauding. Seems like he had inherited his father Ahmadbhai’s genes of serving others.
“I went on Haj four times. Hope I can continue serving others as much as I can, only then will life seem fulfilling!”

લખાણ લાંબુ છે પણ વાંચજો જરૃર...
'બેન મારે તમને કાંક દેવું સે..' એમ કહીને હુસેનભાઈએ પોતાના ખીસ્સામાંથી એક પર્સ કાઢ્યું અને એમાંથી કાગળનું એક નાનકડું પડિકું.
'આ શું છે?'
'ડાયમન્ડ'
'સાચા'
'હા'
'ઓહ મને ના ખપે'
'પણ મારે તમને દેવા સે. મે કેદુના તમને દેવા લઈ રાખ્યા'તા'
'તમારી લાગણી માટે આભાર પણ હું લઈ શકુ નહીં'
આવા પ્રેમાળ હુસેનભાઈને હું પહેલીવાર મળી હતી પણ સેલફોન પર વાત ઘણીવાર થયેલી.
મૂળ તો વિચરતી જાતિના નટ લોકો એમના ઘરની સામે છાપરાં કરીને રહે. હુસેનભાઈના પિતા એહમદભાઈને નટડા પર જીવ ખુબ બળે, એમના જોગું મદદ કરી જાણે પણ સરકારી કાગળિયાની એમને બહુ ગતાગમ પડે નહીં આવામાં ઉકાબાપાએ એહમદભાઈને મારો પરિચય કરાવ્યો પછી તો એહમદભાઈએ ચાની હોટલેથી ફોન કરીને મને કહેલું,
'બેન આ બચાડા બહુ દુઃખી માણસો સે એમની હામે તાકજો. એકફેરા પુરાવા કઢવી દ્યો બચારા ખુબ હેરાન થાય સે'
આમ એહમદભાઈ સાથે પરીચય થઈ ગયેલો. એક વખત દીવ જવાનું થયેલું ત્યારે મળેલી પણ ખરા. ત્યારે હુસેનભાઈ ક્યાંય પિક્ચરમાં નહોતા.
પણ મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીએ મોકળામને કાર્યક્રમ કરેલો ને એમાં અમે નટડામાંથી એક યુવાનને કાર્યક્રમમાં વાત કરવા બોલાવ્યા. પણ એ કોઈ દિવસ બહાર નીકળેલો નહીં તે નહીં અવાય એવું કહેલું. મે ઘણું સમજાવ્યો પછી અમારા કાર્યકર રમેશ જે આ લોકો સાથે કામ કરે એણે મને હુસેનભાઈનો નંબર આપી વાત કરવા કહ્યું. મને હુસેનભાઈ વિષે એ વેળા ખ્યાલ નહીં મે તો આ નટડા યુવાનની નાદાની માટે હુસેનભાઈને પણ ખખડાવી નાખેલા. એમણે સામેય એકેય દલીલ કરી નહીં રાતના પોતાના ખર્ચે દીવથી નટડા સમાજના એ યુવાનને લઈને એ ગાંધીનગર આવ્યા. જો કે એ વખતેય મારે હુસેનભાઈને મળવાનું થયેલુ નહીં. પણ એ વખતે રમેશે મને પરિચય આપેલો એટલે થોડી ગ્લાની સાથે એમનો આભાર માનેલો.
થોડા દિવસ પહેલાં ગીર ગયેલી. #ગીર પહોંચ્યાના સમાચાર હુસેનભાઈને મળ્યા ને ફોન આવ્યો. હુંયે એહમદભાઈનેય મળાશે એમ કરીને સીમાસી એમના ગામે પહોંચી.
સરસ મજાની દુકાનમાં હુસેનભાઈ બેઠેલા. મે ત્યારે પુછ્યું, 'કામ શું કરો છો?'
એમણે કહ્યું, 'બેન #હીરાની ઘંટી ચલાવું છું. લગભગ 80 યુવાનો હીરા ધસવાનું કામ કરે છે. એ સિવાય આ નાની દુકાન ટાઈલ્સ વગેરેની અને ટીક્કી, લેસ લગાડવાનું કામ આસપાસના ગામડાંની બહેનોને આપુ છું..'
આટલું બધુ મે એમને હીરાનું કારખાનું બતાવવા કહ્યું, એ અમને લઈ ગયા.
કપડાં પરથી સામાન્ય લાગતો આ માણસ આવડું મોટું કામ કેવી રીતે કરે છે.. કોણ એમને સમાન આપે છે વગેરે પ્રશ્નો થયા. જવાબમાં હુસેનભાઈએ જે કહ્યું તે,
'બેન આંયા ગામડાંમાંથી કેટલાય યુવાનો સુરત, #અમદાવાદ ભણી રોજી રળવા ઘરબાર ખેતી મૂકીને વયા જાય છે. ત્યાં જઈને દસ બાય દસની ખોલીમાં જાનવર જેવી જીંદગી જીવે. આ બધુ ગમે નહીં. હું આ દુકાને બેસીને કેટલીયે બહેનોને શટલિયામાં ઠસ્સો ઠસ ભરીને દાડી કરવા શહેરમાં કે ગામોમાં જતી જોવું ત્યારે જીવ બળી જાય. મે નક્કી કર્યું કે આમને ઘેર બેઠા વતનમાં કામ આપવું
અને કાચા હીરા મેળવવા મહેનત કરી. હજુ હું ઈચ્છુ છુ એવું કામ નથી મળ્યું પણ હીરાનું કામ શરૃ થતા આજે 80 યુવાનો એમના વતનમાં રહીને ખેતીની સાથે હીરા ઘસવાનું કામ પણ કરે છે.
બહેનોને શું કામ આપવું તેની મૂંઝવણ હતી. #સુરત જઈને જોયું તો બહેનો સાડીમાં લેસ, ટીક્કી લગાડવાનું કામ કરતી જોઈ. મે ત્યાંના વેપારીને વાત કરી અને બસમાં એ માણસ સીમાસી સામાન મોકલવા તૈયાર થયો અત્યારે આસપાસના ગામની 110 બહેનોને હું કામ આપુછું. પણ આમાં મને વળતર ખાસ મળતુંનથી'
'તો ખોટોનો ધંધો કેમ કરવો?'
'બેકારી ઘટે ને શહેરો તરફની દોટ ઓછીથાય એ માટે..'
'આ કામમાં કોઈને મદદ કરવી હોય તો શું કરાય?'
'સીમાસીમાં એક મોટો ઓરડો- હોલ કોઈ બાંધી આપે તો બહેનો અહીંયા આવીને કામ કરી શકે. તો કામમાં મારી નજર રહે અને કાર્યમાં ચોખ્ખાઈ આવે અને હીરા ઘસવા માટે મોટા વેપારીઓ અમને સામાન આપે તો અમને ઘણો ફાયદો રે.હાલ એટલું બધુ મળતર નથી. પણ લોકો માટે કરવું છે એટલે આ કાર્ય કરીએ છીએ'
મે કહ્યું હું તમારી વાત ચોક્કસ લખીશ ખબર નહીં કોઈને મન થાય અને કોઈ મદદ મળી જાય.
ગામડાં ભાંગીરહ્યા છે ત્યારે હુસેનભાઈ જેવા ભાંગતા ગામડાં બચાવવા મથી રહ્યા છે એ સરાહનીય છે. વળી સેવાનો ગુણ પિતા એહમદભાઈમાંથી મળ્યો છે. 'ચાર વાર બેન હજ પઢી આવ્યો. કુદરતની કૃપા વગર આ બધુ ક્યાંથી થાય. બસ લોકોનું હજુ વધુ સારુ કરી શકીએ તો જીવતર લેખે લાગ્યું'
હુસેનભાઈ અને એહમદભાઈ બેયને પ્રણામ કરવા પડે.
મે જે જોયું એ બધુયે લખ્યં. હુસેનભાઈ સાથે સરસ ફોટો પણ પડાવ્યો.
