"Promise me you will quit taking tobacco!”

“You do so much for us, how will the poor like us ever repay!!

The moment Albelabhai Saraniyaa uttered these words, I brought my hand forward and asked for my reward. “Promise me you will give up your habit of tobacco!”

“This is very tough promise you have asked for! It is difficult to function without tobacco, I feel weak without it. Ben, I wouldn’t be able to give it up just like that!!”

“I will not listen to these reasons, you will need to give it up!”

“Promise me that you shall give it up,” I asked as I stood there with my hand stretched for a commitment from Albelabhai.

Albelabhai stood there, smirking and confused watching my hand that contemplating on what next.

“Why think so much, you will have to promise. I am not taking this hand back without a commitment from you!” I insisted.

The entire settlement that was watching us got confused. “He cannot leave the addiction so easily. It will make him sick!” they said in chorus.

Finally, after almost five minutes Albelabhai barely touched my hand “I cannot promise but, shall try,” he said.

After a fortnight, I called Meera, Albelabhai’s wife to inquire about his half-hearted promise. “Ben, good you took this promise.  I have tried so hard to make him give up but, he never listened. He hasn’t stopped yet but, am sure he will quit this time.” Meeraben spoke with a hearty laughter. “The moment he picks up tobacco packet he stares at it and mentions your name…” she continued speaking and laughing at the same time.

Strange are these warm relationships with these communities. We cannot rob people, we cannot fight like this, what will people say about Mittal’s relatives, your actions can embarrass me!! Such nudges and sweet threats do make an impact and I am enjoying these moments to the core! Pray to Almighty that I always find strength to serve them….

Nomads cry-out their sufferings due to recent Floods

From where do we begin??

Patni Odha is a hamlet of Khariya village. Recently the village has been in news for the devastation and loss of life it suffered in the recent floods. Reading and watching about devastation is one thing and witnessing it in person is a totally different ball game.

The village has a substantial population of Devipujak community, almost 100 Devipujak families reside here. This is a community known for its enterprising and hardworking character. The entire village was submerged in water and the flow of the water was so intense that the families took refuge over their roofs and some who did not trust the roofs stayed on the neem trees.

These chiefly agrarian population is facing land erosion and are dealing with the deaths of their cattle wealth. Their goats and buffaloes were swept away while the ones times to the noose drowned to death. “The government has given 5-7 thousand rupees. How are we supposed to manage so much loss with so little money?” questioned a completely shattered Champaben, who now worries of how and where to restart from!!

How we wish such occasions too had a restart option!! VSSM will be supporting these families rebuild their lives but the number of families in need is way beyond our financial ability to provide support.

These families have been talking to VSSM’s Naran and make frequent calls to me.. they have buried the dead cattle but, no one has come to their door step to inquire about the loss nor has any one offered any help!!

VSSM is planning to support these families buy cattle so that they can commence on the path to rebuild their fate……

પટણી ઓઢા ખારીયા ગામનું પરુ. ખારીયામાં પૂરમાં જાનહાની થયાનું અને ઘણુયે નુક્શાન થયાનું આપણે વાંચ્યું. પણ નજરે જોઈએ તો આ બધું વધુ ભયાનક દેખાય.

દેવીપૂજક ખુબ મહેનતુ જાતિ. સ્વબળે આગળ આવવા મથતી આ જાતિના આ ગામમાં 100 ઉપરાંત પરિવાર રહે. પૂરના પાણી એવા ધસમસ્યા કે ઘરની છત માથે ચડાય એ ત્યાં ચડ્યા ને જેને છત ઉપર વિશ્વાસ નહોતો એમણે લીંબડા માથે ખાટલો બાંધ્યો. સાત આઠ જણા એની ઉપર બેસી રહ્યા.

ખેતી અને પશુપાલન કરનારા આ પરિવારોની જમીન ધોવાઈ ગઈ. ભેંસો ને બકરાં મરી ગયા. ચંપાબેને કહ્યું, 'સરકારે પોચ થી હાત હજાર આલ્યા. પણ એટલાથી બેઠું ના થવાય. ભેંસો મરી ગઈ. એ હોત તો ડેરીમાં દૂધ ભરાવી ને ખાત પણ....અને ઘર તો જુઓ ભઈસાબ.. ફેર ચમના બેઠા થઈશું....'

આપણે મદદ કરીશું. પણ આવા લોકોની સઁખ્યા વધુ છે.... ને આર્થિક રીતે અમે નાના છીયે...

કાર્યકર નારણ આગળ આ પરિવારોએ ખુબ વાતો કરી. મારી સાથે ફોન પર વાત કરી, ભેંસો મરી ગયાનું કહ્યું તો અમે કહ્યું, 'સરકારે પૈસા નથી આપ્યા?' જવાબમાં ચંપાબેને કહ્યું ' બકરાં ને બીજુંય ઘણું તો તણાઈ જ ગયું. ખીલે બંધાયેલી ભેંસો મરી ગઈ. ગંધ મારતું તું બધું, તે પાણી ઉતર્યા પછી ખાડા કરી ને એને દાટી દીધી... પણ કોઈ આ બારામાં પૂછવા નથી આવ્યું,ના મદદ માટે કીધું.'

આ પરિવારોને ભેંસ માટે વગર વ્યાજે લૉન આપવાનું પહેલા કરીશું. જેથી એ બેઠા થઇ શકે...બાકીની વિગત એમના જ મોઢે સાંભળો...

Yet another case of Inhuman Torture on DAFERS - Police Need to understand the real approach towards them...

“Ben, (the nomadic communities address Mittal Patel as Ben) I presented Katiya to the police yet, they refuse to let us live in peace!! You asked us to give up all the illegal activities so that the police stop coming to the settlement, we did just that. We also don’t like them coming to our homes so I personally went and presented Katiya before Bopal City Police. But, this did not go well with the LCB and SOG of Sarkhej. They feel I should have taken Katiya to them and not Bopal police. The officials of Sarkhej police station are harassing us for this, they come to our dangaa pent out verbal abuse, point at the skirts of our women and talk all rubbish and shit!!” Gafarbhai was narrating all this in a single breath until he could speak no longer and emotions took over. His voice chocked. “it is difficult to tolerate this any longer, Ben!!”

A concern for the Present & the Future 

Since emotional Gafarbhai Dafer could not speak any further Sakinaben, his wife took the phone. “We do not mind if they come to our settlement if we are at fault but even after all that we have done, their behavior before our young girls…… I told them to be careful and mind their language, I was the age of their mother and yet they refused to behave and correct their language. They have been coming here daily, Ben. Today the villagers have asked us to walk out of the village. According to them the police has asked them to remove us from the village!! We have sent our children and their families to another place. But to us Rethal is home, we even have identity cards and documents from this village. You have been working so hard to ensure we get residential plots allotted here. The villagers have been so supportive but now they too are fed up with the recent police visits. That is why they called us and asked us to leave the village. Where do we go now, Ben??”

The decision to allow a family to stay in a village does not rest with the police. Period. If the culprit has walked up to the police, why harass his family? Punish the culprit. He is with you. We fail to understand this behavior by police. Have we ever tried to understand why do the Dafer feel the need to loot or engage in unlawful activities?? This barbaric behavior by police has crossed limits.

“If the police come to the dangaa, tell them we are not leaving this place. We will continue to stay here, they can do whatever they can still if they continue to abuse, call me.” The assurance to Gafarbhai and Sakinaben calmed them down a little. In the meanwhile, I have tried calling the phone number Gafarbhai has shared with me but no one has answered it yet.

I will continue to write to the officials based in Gandhinagar. And it is not the first time I am doing it and I know it is not the last time either!! Seriously, how many times do we have to write about same issues. We expect the DGP to intervene and take action in this matter but, he seems to be too busy with the visits of Prime Minister, Chief Minister and this and that… Hope he finds sometime soon.. whenever we have asked for an appointment, such programs have taken priority. All of us, we and these communities, are fed up with this…….

‘બેન કટિયાને હાજર કરી દીધો તોય પોલીસ સાલ નહી છોડતી. તમે કીધુ ક હવ ચોખ્ખા થઈ જાવ આપણા માથે ગુનો હોય તો પોલીસ આંટા દે ને? પોલીસ આંટા દે ઈ હારુયે નો લાગે. તે બેન હું બોપલ સીટી પોલીસમાં રૃભરૃ જઈને કટિયાને દઈ આયો. પણ આ વાતની સરખેજ એલ.સી.બી. અને એસ.ઓ.જી.ને ખબર પડી તારથી ઈમને ઉપાડો લીધો સે. કટિયાને અમારી આગળ કેમ હાજર નો કર્યો? બેન અમારા બૈરાયોના ઘાઘરા હામે હાથ કરીને કાનના કીડા ખરી પડ એવું એ લોકો બોલ્યા.’

ગફારભાઈ એક શ્વાસે બોલી રહ્યા હતા. બોલતા બોલતા એમના ગળે ડૂમો બંધાઈ ગ્યો.

‘નથ સહન થાતુ બેન...’ તેઓ આગળ કશું બોલી ના શક્યા. 

એ રડી રહ્યા હતા... એમના પત્ની શકીનાબહેને ફોન લીધો, ‘અમારો વાંક ગનો હોય ને તો હો વાર ભલે સાપરે આવે પણ કોય ગના વગર આઈન અમારી જુવાન છોડીઓની હામે.... મે કીધુ કે, હું તમારી મા જેવી સુ જરા જીભાન હંભાળો. પણ એતો નાગુ બોલે જ જાય બેન. તમને હું કહુ... હમણાં હમણાંથી રોજ ઉપાડો લીધો સે, તે આજે ગામલોકોએ ગામ ખાલી કરીને જતા રેવા કઈ દીધુ. એ લોકો કે સે કે, પોલીસે કીધુ સે તમન બારા કાઢવાનું! બેન મારા સોકરાંઓ ને ઈના પરિવારને બીજે ઠેકાણે મોકલી દીધા. અમે ઘણા ટેમથી રેથળમાં રહીએ સીએ. અમારા મતપત્રક, રેશનકેડ હોત આંયના સે. અમને જમીન મલે ઈ હાટુ તો તમે ધોડા કરોસો. ગામનાય હા પાડતા તા પણ આ પોલીસના રોજ રોજના કેડાથી ઈયે કંટાળ્યા સે તે આજે બોલાઈને ગામમાંથી જતા રેવા કઈ દીધુ... હવે ક્યાં જવું બેન?’

કોઈ વ્યક્તિને ગામમાં રહેવા દેવા કે નહીં તે નક્કી કરવાનું કામ પોલીસનું તો નથી જ. વળી ગુનેગારને સજા કરો એને પકડીને લઈ જાવ. પણ એ ગુનેગાર સામે ચાલીને હાજર થઈ જાય પછી એના પરિવારને હેરાન કરવાનો શું મતલબ? ડફેર લૂંટ કરે પણ લૂંટ કેમ કરવી પડે છે એ સમજવાની જરૃર છે... પોલીસની બર્બરતા હવે હદ વટાવી રહી છે.

ગફારભાઈ અને શકીનાબહેનને આજે અમે કહી દીધુ કે, ‘પોલીસ આવે ને તો કેજો અહીંયાથી નહીં હટુ, આંય જ રહીશ. તમારાથી થાય ઈ કરો... છતાં ના માને તો મને ફોન કરજો.’ આટલું કહ્યાથી એમનામાં હિંમત આવી. ગફારભાઈને પોલીસે આપેલા નંબર પર ફોન જોડ્યો પણ વાત થતી નથી. 

ગાંધીનગર આ બાબતે ફરી લખીશ. પણ કેટલા કાગળ આ બાબતે અમે ચીતર્યા છે. ડીજીપી આ બાબતે નિર્ણય લે એવી અપેક્ષા રાખીએ છીએ પણ હાલ તો તેઓ પ્રધાનમંત્રી, મુખ્યમંત્રી અને ફલાણા ઢીકણા કાર્યક્રમમાં વ્યસ્ત છે. ઝટ ફ્રી થાય એવું ઈચ્છીએ... દર વખતે માંગવામાં આવેલા સમયમાં આવા કાર્યક્રમો જ નડી જાય છે... કંટાળો આવે છે અમને અને આ પ્રજાને...
