On May 20th 2019 women staying at Ahmedabad’s Ramdevnagar settlement, belonging to Bavri community have planned a public demonstration to show their anger against the nuisance of alcoholism and drugs that is ravaging their families. It is a  peaceful  public demonstration. Yet the police has refused to support the call asking us to refrain from planning  any such program. We have failed to understand their reason behind denying their support.

The women of Ramdevnagar are struggling to mend their shattered homes. They are trying to prevent their young boys falling prey to one of the deadliest addiction there is – drugs. Isn’t it a right thing to do when you are a wife or a mother of an addict, when you see your children die a slow death. Everyone strives for a happy home and healthy family. So as these poor women are working to mend their broken homes why prevent them from doing so??

The police are arguing that the agitation will affect the law and order situation in the area. Again, when we have the police support won’t  it be easy to maintain law. Why worry?? The police need to stand beside them as their protectors.

If we decide to stand with the people struggling to bring a positive change within their communities it is for sure that there will be no need for programs like ‘Suraksha Setu’.

We also call upon the civil society to come in support of these women. It is time we acknowledge their presence amidst us and accept them as one of us.

Hope the police department treats this event positively, as a way forward.

તા.૨૦ મે ૨૦૧૯ ના રોજ અમદાવાદના રામદેવનગર વિસ્તારમાં રહેતી બાવરી સમુદાયની બહેનો પોતાના ઘરમાં ઘૂસી ગયેલા દારૂ અને ગાંજા ને તિલાંજલિ આપવા સાંજે ૫ થી ૭ માં અહિંસક લડત લડવાની છે. 

પોલીસ આ કામમાં સહયોગ આપે એ માટે અમે પોલીસને જાણ કરી પણ પોલીસ આ કરવાની નાં પાડે છે. કારણ સમજાતું નથી.

મારું ઘર મારે ઠીક કરવું છે અને એ અધિકાર દરેકનો છે તો પછી રામદેવનગર માં રહેતી બહેનોને એમનું ઘર ઠીક કરતા પોલીસ કેમ રોકે છે? 

પોલીસ કહે છે કાયદો વ્યવસ્થા નહિ જળવાય. અરે ભાઈ તમે અમારી સાથે ઊભા રો પછી તો કાયદો વ્યવસ્થા નહિ જળવાય એવી બીક નહિ રહે ને?

બદલાવ માટે તૈયાર થનાર ની પડખે રહીશું તો પછી સુરક્ષા સેતુ જેવા કાર્યક્રમો નહિ કરવા પડે એની ખાત્રી...

સમાજને પણ આહ્વાન આ બહેનોના ટેકામાં આવવા. આ લોકો પણ મારા તમારા જેવા આપણામાં ના એક છે. 

આશા રાખું પોલીસ આ કાર્ય હકારાત્મક લે...

“One night my drunk son mistook acid for alcohol and drank it. The alcohol addiction had taken such huge toll on him. That was the last night we saw our son alive. Young boys who are supposed to be pole bearers for their parents are dying and we have to carry their bier. It is extremely  shattering for us.” Lakshmiben Bavri was emotional narrating her plight as alcoholism and drug addictions take away their young sons.

The women across the entire ghetto of Ramdevnagar share similar plight and demand strict enforcement of the law to prevent their men falling prey to alcohol and drugs. It is not just our children, young boys from various localities and backgrounds come to our settlement to buy marihuana. The drug is destroying them all.

We have raised our voice against it for long. We have even called the police to arrest our husbands and sons, but these men refuse to change. The police instead of arresting just fines them. What should we do?? We are so fed up with this everyday struggle.

Since last 15 days the women staying in Ahmedabad’s Ramdevnangar area have launched a campaign to drive away alcohol and drugs from their settlements.

“We are prepared to show our most fiery avatar, but this time we will not rest until we drive these two menace away from our locality,” says Neniben.

On May 20th 2019  between 5 to 7 pm, the women of Ramdevnangar have decided to come together and publicly show their anguish against the rampant spread of alcoholism and drugs in their ghetto and the weak laws and enforcement.  They plan to raise their voice so high that it falls to the deaf years of the enforcement authorities.  They plan to  congregate at Ramdevnagar Cross Roads, Near Sadvichar Parivar Campus, Satellite Police station.

These women who are wives, mothers, grand-mothers have decided to come together and demand a change, it is a long battle  but they are prepared to pour in  their strength.

It would be an encouraging gesture if you could join them and stand with them in solidarity.

મારા દિકરાને દારૃની એવી લગ લાગી કે રાતના દારૃ પીને ઘેર આવ્યા પછી એસીડને દારૃ સમજીને પી ગ્યો અને એ મરી ગ્યો. અમને કાંધ આપવાની હોય એવી ઉંમરે અમારે એને કાંધ આપવી પડી - લક્ષ્મીબેન બાવરીએ ભારે હૈયે આ વાત કરી.

અમદાવાદના રામદેવનગરમાં રહેતી બધી બહેનો એક જ વાત કરે, બેન દારૃ ગાંજાથી અમને છોડાવો અમારા છોકરાં બગડી રહ્યા છે. અમારા છોકરાં સિવાય પણ બહારથી જુવાન છોકરાં વસાહતમાં ગાંજો લેવા આવે છે અને એ બધાય બરબાદ થઈ રહ્યા છે.

અમે ખુબ વિરોધ કર્યો. અમારા છોકરાં અને ધણીને તો પોલીસ બોલાવીને પકડાવીયે દીધા છે તોય એ સુધરતા નથી. 

પોલીસ પણ દારૃ ગાંજો વેચવાળાને પકડવાની જગ્યાએ અમને દંડે છે. શું કરીએ? હવે થાક્યા છીએ.

પંદર દિવસથી અમદાવાદના રામદેવનગરમાં રહેતી બાવરી સમુદાયની બહેનોએ દારૃ ગાંજો વસાહતમાંથી ભગાડવા ઉપાડો લીધો છે.

નેનીબહેન તો કહે હવે અમે ભવાની થવાના પણ હવે આ બંધ કરાવી પાર મૂકીશું.

શું કરવું બહેરા કાને આ અવાજ પહોંચે એ માટે અમે તા.20 મે 2019ને સોમવારના રોજ સાંજના પાંચ થી સાતમાં દારૃ ગાંજાની વિરોધમાં જાહેર દેખાવ કાર્યક્રમ રામદેવનગર ચાર રસ્તા પાસે, સદવિચાર પરિવારની સામે, સેટેલાઈટ પોલીસ સ્ટેશનની આયોજીત કર્યા છે.

બહેનો બદલાવ ઈચ્છે છે, લડત લાંબી છે પણ થાક્યા વગર બહેનો લડશે તો સફળ થવાના એ નક્કી. 

આ બહેનોના સપોર્ટમાં તમે જોડાશો તો રાજી થઈશું...

Kankuben bavri shares her heart wrenching story...

It is heart wrenching to listen to Kankuben a mother who witnesses his son dying a slow death narrate, “my son has few months to live, his severe addiction to alcohol and marijuana will soon kill him. Everyone knows where to find alcohol and marijuana in Ramdevnagar , then why don’t we  have a law to prevent that!”

“We have lost our husbands and sons to these addictions however, we refuse to see the same plight for our grandsons. If you support us we are ready to fight these evils that have destroyed our community from within. We are also prepared to show our fiery avatar to bring an end to this!”

The families of these women are convincing them to not speak up, remain quite. The ones who speak up have been victims of domestic violence. But they do not wish to keep quite.

They want freedom from these evils that are consuming the youth and working adults of their community.

As members of civil society it is our responsibility to stand besides the women who are fighting one of the most rampant issues of our ‘dry state’.

The women from Ramdevnagar are planning to publicly voice their plight  on May 20th 2019 between 5 to 7 PM and let the world enough is enough. The mothers,  who have lost their men to addictions are also prepared to warn the enforcers of law to do their job well with honesty and integrity.

કંકુબહેન કહે છે કે, બધા જાણે છે રામદેવગનરમાં દારૃ અને ગાંજો ક્યાં વેચાય છે તો પછી એની સામે કાયદો કેમ નથી થતો.

લક્ષ્મીબેન કહે છે, અમારા ધણી અને દીકરા તો દારૃ અને ગાંજામાં પડી ગ્યા છે પણ દીકરાના દીકરા અમારા પોતરાને આ લત નથી આલવી એટલે હવે લડવું છે... તમે સાથ આપો..

અમે ભવાની બનીને લડીશું...

ભવાની બનેલી બહેનોને ઘરના જ આ બધુ ના કરવા સમજાવી રહ્યા છે. ક્યાંક ના સમજનાર બહેનોને માર પણ પડ્યો છે પણ આ બહેનો કહે છે હવે નહીં છોડીએ.

અમારે આમાંથી મુક્તિ જોઈએ છે બસ.....

સમાજ તરીકે આપણે આ બહેનોની પડખે રહીએ...

સોમવારના તા.20 મે 2019ના રોજ સાંજના 5 થી 7માં રામદેવનગર, અમદાવાદમાં આ બાબતે બહેનો દેખાવ કરવાની છે...

અને લાગતાવળતા સૌને કહેવાની છે હવે નહીં ચલાવીએ. કાયદો વ્યવસ્થા સાચવવાવાળા હવે ચેતજો નહીં તો તમનેય નહીં મૂકીએ એવી લાલ આંખ હવે દારૃ અને ગાંજામાં જીવથી જેમણે દીકરો ગુમાવ્યો છે તેમણે કરી છે...
