On the battlefield of Kurukshetra, as Bhishma Pitamah lay upon his bed of arrows, Yudhishthira asked him, “Grandfather, what is the noblest deed in this world?” Bhishma replied with profound wisdom, “The greatest virtue is to undertake work that nourishes Mother Earth and provides sustenance to thousands of living beings. Such work is the work of water conservation.”

In earlier times, prosperous and wealthy people built ponds, lakes, and stepwells. They regarded these efforts as their highest duty and a true expression of compassion toward all forms of life.

Today, while we generously support causes that benefit people, we often overlook the countless other creatures that share this planet with us. Helping fellow human beings is important, but we must also remember our responsibility toward nature and all living beings.

When we feed a hungry person, they may thank us. But an ant, a turtle, a bird, or a rabbit cannot express their gratitude in words. Perhaps that is why efforts that benefit nature and wildlife often receive less attention.

Tulsidas beautifully wrote in the Ramcharitmanas:

“Par hit saris dharma nahi bhai”

There is no religion greater than working for the welfare of others.

The true challenge lies in understanding this wisdom and putting it into practice.

Inspired by this eternal truth, VSSM has been carrying out water conservation and tree plantation initiatives for many years. So far, we have deepened 456 village ponds, creating storage capacity for billions of liters of water. These water bodies have become a source of life and relief for countless animals, birds, and farming families.

Several villages in Dahegam Taluka of Gandhinagar district are facing severe water scarcity. Groundwater levels have declined drastically. To address this challenge, we have set a goal of deepening 20 village ponds this year. Work has already begun on a Jal Mandir (Water Temple) in Anguthala village.

This project is being made possible through a small contribution from the Government of Gujarat’s Sujalam Sufalam Scheme, generous financial support from our respected donor Ullasbhai Paymaster, and the cooperation of local villagers who are helping remove the excavated soil. It is truly a collective effort.

This pond will not only harvest rainwater but will also receive water from Ma Reva—the sacred Narmada River. As a result, it will remain filled throughout the year and bring transformative change to the village.

If every village resolves to maintain and preserve its own ponds by mobilizing local resources and community contributions, there would be no need to wait for support from organizations or government agencies.

People like Ullasbhai understand that where there is water, there is life, and where there is life, there is true service and true dharma. We are deeply grateful for their support.

May God grant all of us the wisdom and inspiration to participate in this noble, life-giving mission. Water conservation is not merely an environmental effort—it is an act of compassion, a service to all living beings, and one of the highest forms of dharma.

કુરુક્ષેત્રના રણમેદાનમાં જ્યારે ભીષ્મ પિતામહ બાણશૈયા પર સૂતા હતા, ત્યારે યુધિષ્ઠિરે પૂછ્યું, “પિતામહ, આ જગતમાં સૌથી શ્રેષ્ઠ કર્મ કયું?” પિતામહે ગહન જવાબ આપતા કહ્યું, “જે કર્મ હજારો જીવોને તૃપ્તિ આપે, આપણી આ ધરતી માને પોષણ આપે, તેવું ‘જળનું કાર્ય’ કરવું એ સૌથી મોટું પુણ્યકર્મ”

પહેલાના સમયમાં સુખી-સંપન્ન લોકો તળાવો ગળાવતા, વાવ બંધાવતા. એ બધા આને સાચો ધર્મ માનતા. આમ તો એમની તમામ જીવસૃષ્ટિ પ્રત્યે આ સંવેદના. આજે આપણે દાન કરીએ છીએ, પણ ઘણીવાર તેમાં સમજણનો અભાવ દેખાય. આપણે માણસોના કાર્યો માટે દોડીને મદદ કરીએ. કરવી પણ જોઈએ, એમાં મારી ના નથી. પણ માત્ર મનુષ્ય કલ્યાણમાં મોખરે રહેનાર આપણે આ ધરતી પર અન્ય જીવો છે એને કેમ ભૂલી જઈએ છીએ.

કદાચ કોઈ ભૂખ્યાની આંતરડી ઠારીએ તો એ આભાર કહેશે. પણ કીડી, કાચબો કે સસલું એના માટે કરેલા શુભકાર્યને લઈને આપણને બોલીને આભાર નથી કહેતા કદાચ એટલે એમના કલ્યાણના કાર્યોમાં આપણને ઓછો રસ પડે છે?

તુલસીદાસજીએ રામચરિતમાનસમાં સુંદર વાત કહી છે, “પર હિત સરિસ ધર્મ નહિ ભાઈ |” એટલે કે બીજાના હિત જેવો કોઈ મોટો ધર્મ નથી. પણ આ બધુ સમજી વ્યવહારમાં ઉતારવું અગત્યનું.

VSSM આ શાશ્વત સત્યને પકડીને વર્ષોથી જળસંચય અને વૃક્ષારોપણનું કાર્ય કરે, અત્યાર સુધીમાં 456 જેટલા તળાવો ઊંડા કર્યા છે. જેમાં અબજો લીટર પાણીનો સંગ્રહ થયો છે. જે લાખો જીવો અને ખેડૂતોને સાતા આપે છે.

ગાંધીનગરના દહેગામ તાલુકાના ઘણા ગામોમાં પણ જળની સ્થિતિ કપરી. ભૂગર્ભજળ ખૂબ નીચે ગયા છે, આવા ગામોના 20 તળાવો આ વર્ષે ઊંડા કરવાનું લક્ષ્ય છે. જેમાંના અંગૂથલા ગામમાં જલમંદિરનું કાર્ય અમે આરંભ્યું.

સરકારશ્રીની સુજલામ સુફલામ યોજનાનો નાનકડો ટેકો. અમારા આદરણીય ઉલ્લાસભાઈ પેમાસ્ટરની મોટી આર્થિક મદદ ને માટી ઉપાડવા ગામનો સહયોગ આમ સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી આ કાર્ય થઈ રહ્યું છે.

આ તળાવમાં હવે માત્ર વરસાદનું જ નહીં, પણ ‘મા રેવા’ (નર્મદા) ના નીર પણ આવશે. જેનાથી આખું વર્ષ તળાવ ભરેલું રહેશે ને ગામની કાયાપલટ થશે.

જો દરેક ગામ પોતે સંકલ્પ કરે ને ગામના જ લોકો ભેગા મળીને અનુદાન એકત્રિત કરી પોતાના ગામના તળાવોને કાયમ સાબદા રાખવાનું કરે તો અમારા જેવી કોઈ સંસ્થા કે સરકારની રાહ જોવી નહીં પડે. ઉલ્લાસભાઈ જેવા અનેક સ્વજનો જ્યાં જળ છે, ત્યાં જ જીવન છે ને ત્યાં જ સાચો ધર્મ છે એવું માને છે એટલે આવા કાર્યોમાં મદદ કરે છે. એમના અમે આભારી છીએ.

ઈશ્વર સૌને આ ભગીરથ કાર્યમાં જોડાવવાની સન્મતિ આપે એ જ પ્રાર્થના.

Yogakshem refers to two important concepts: "yog," which is the attainment of what has not yet been achieved, and "kshem," which involves protecting what has already been attained. Both actions are essential for a fulfilling life. We must strive to gain what we lack while also ensuring that what we have is safeguarded.

You might wonder why I'm discussing Yogakshem today, but it is crucial to do so. The condition of our lakes - Jal Mandirs has deteriorated significantly, which should never have happened. Our ancestors built lakes, wells, and stepwells to ensure everyone had access to water. While the world has advanced and we have developed new technologies for easier access to water, we have neglected these traditional resources that served us for centuries.

The Jal Mandirs, or lakes, were meant to be preserved, and it was our responsibility to protect them. Unfortunately, we did not fulfill our duty, leading to critically low groundwater levels.

In response to this situation, we have decided to rejuvenate these Jal Mandirs. So far, 336 Jal Mandirs have been revitalized through the efforts of well-wishers associated with VSSM and the Vimukt Foundation.

This year, we have set a target to renovate 50 lakes. Additionally, we have included Satlasana in our water conservation projects in North Gujarat.

Kothasana is a resourceful village where we worked to deepen the lake with the assistance of the respected Chandravadanbhai Shantilal Shah. Villagers actively participated by removing soil from the lake. The efforts made by the villagers and well-wishers affiliated with our organization will benefit many residents.

Thanks to Chandravadanbhai for your continuous collaboration on this project. Your emotional support has been invaluable, and we greatly appreciate it.

 યોગક્ષેમ- જે મળ્યું નથી તેની પ્રાપ્તિ એટલે ‘યોગ’ અને જે મળ્યું છે તેનું રક્ષણ કરવું તે ‘ક્ષેમ’. જીવનમાં આ બે ક્રિયા આપણે સતત કરવાની. જે મળ્યું નથી તે મેળવવા મથવાનું ને મળ્યું છે તે છિનવાઈ ન જાય તેની કાળજી રાખવાની.

તમને થશે આ આજે કેમ યોગક્ષેમની વાત કરે છે?

પણ વાત પડે તેવી છે. જલ મંદિરોની આજે જે દશા થઈ છે એ દશા કોઈ કાળે ન થવી જોઈએ. આપણા વડવાઓએ સમગ્ર જીવસૃષ્ટિ જળ મેળવી શકે તે માટે તળાવો, વાવ, કૂવાઓનું નિર્માણ કર્યું. દુનિયા વિકસી અને આપણને પાણી સરળતાથી મળી શકે તેવા સાધનો ઉપલબ્ધ થયા એટલે આપણી પાસે સદીઓથી જે વ્યવસ્થાઓ હતી તે આપણે ભૂલ્યા.

પણ જલમંદિરો ને ભૂલવાના નહોતા. એના રક્ષણની જવાબદારી હતી. જે બરાબર ન નિભાવી એટલે આપણા ભૂગર્ભજળ ઊંડે પહોંચ્યા.

અમે આવા જલમંદિરોનો જીર્ણોદ્ધાર કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. અત્યાર સુધી 336 જલ મંદિરોનું નિર્માણ VSSM અને વિમુક્ત ફાઉન્ડેશન સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્વજનો મારફત કર્યું. 

આ વર્ષે પણ 50 તળાવોના નવીનીકરણનો લક્ષાંક નિર્ધારીત કર્યો. ઉત્તર ગુજરાતમાં થઈ રહેલા જળસંચયના કાર્યોમાં આ વર્ષે સતલાસણાનો ઉમેરો થયો. 

કોઠાસણા મજાનું ગામ. ત્યાં અમે તળાવ ઊંડું કરવાનું કામ આદરણીય ચંદ્રવદનભાઈ શાંતિલાલ શાહની મદદથી કર્યું. 

ગામલોકોએ માટી ઉપાડવાનું કર્યું. ગામ અને સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્વજનો મારફત થયેલા આ કામથી ગામના અનેકોને ફાયદો થશે.

"We are undertaking the task of constructing water temples in North Gujarat. So far, we have renovated 325 ponds and water temples.

Sometimes we wonder, will we do something for future generations, just like our ancestors and forefathers did for us? The world has seen tremendous changes in the last 50-60 years. Technological innovations have come about, and though they are a blessing, they have also led to challenges.

The importance of water resources, such as ponds, for collecting rainwater, has diminished with the advent of technology and the rise of borewells. As a result, an immense amount of underground water has been depleted. It is said that since 1974, the groundwater level has been decreasing at an average rate of 20 meters per decade.

Understanding this situation, we thought about what we, as responsible citizens of the country, could do, and we began working on the construction of ponds, which is the largest medium for rainwater harvesting.

Many relatives joined us in this effort, and as a result, we have been able to dig around 325 ponds. As summer begins, we have resumed our work on water conservation. With the help of VSSM and Vimukt Foundation, our goal this year is to create a large number of ponds.

With the help of Parikh Foundation in Mumbai, we have started deepening the pond in Bodal village in Banaskantha. The village Sarpanch is extremely enthusiastic. He said, 'Let’s make the pond as big as possible. If needed, we will also contribute.'

We enjoy working in such awakened villages. We are grateful to the Parikh Foundation, respected Vikrambhai, Sonakbhai, Milanbhai, and the entire Parikh family. With their support, we have renovated many water temples.

 જલમંદિર નિર્માણનું કાર્ય અમે ઉત્તર ગુજરાત કરીએ. અત્યાર સુધી 325 તળાવો- જલમંદિરોનો જીર્ણોદ્ધાર કર્યો. 

ક્યારેક થાય આપણા દાદા, પરદાદા આપણા માટે જે કરી ગયા આપણે આવનારી પેઢી માટે આવું કશું કરીને જશું? દુનિયા આખીમાં જે ફેરફારો થયા તે પાછલા પચાસ - સાહીઠ વર્ષમાં. ટેકનોલોજીનો આવિષ્કાર થયો. એ આશિર્વાદ રૃપ પણ બની પણ ક્યાં એના લીધે જ સ્થિતિ વણસી પણ ખરી.

તળાવો જેવા વરસાદી પાણી સંગ્રહ કરવાના જળ સ્ત્રોતોની મહત્તા ટેકનોલોજી આવી બોરવેલ બન્યા એના કારણે ઘટી. ભૂગર્ભમાંથી અમાપ પાણી ઉલેચાયા. કહે છે, 1974 થી દરેક દાયકામાં ભૂગર્ભજળ 20 મીટરની એવરેજથી ઘટી રહ્યા છે.

આ સ્થિતિ અમને સમજાઈ ને દેશના જવાબદાર નાગરિક તરીકે શું કરી શકીએ એનો વિચાર આવ્યો ને અમે વરસાદી પાણીના સંગ્રહનુ સૌથી મોટુ માધ્યમ એવા તળાવોના નિર્માણનું કાર્ય શરૃ કર્યું.

અનેક સ્વજનો આ કાર્યમાં સાથે જોડાયા જેના કારણે 325 જેટલા તળાવો ખોદી શક્યા. ઉનાળો શરૃ થવાની કગાર પર છે અને અમે જળસંચયના કાર્યો પાછા આરંભ્યા. VSSM અને વિમુક્ત ફાઉન્ડેશનની મદદથી આ વર્ષે મોટી સંખ્યામાં તળાવો કરવાનો લક્ષાંક છે. 

પરીખ ફાઉન્ડેશન મુંબઈની મદદથી અમે બનાસકાંઠાના બોડાલ ગામનું તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. ગામના સરપંચ એકદમ ઉત્સાહી. એમણે કહ્યું, શક્ય એટલું મોટુ તળાવ કરીએ. જરૃર પડે અમે ભાગીદારી પણ નોંધાવશું.

આવા જાગૃત ગામોમાં કામ કરવું ગમે. પરીખ ફાઉન્ડેશન, આદરણીય વિક્રમભાઈ, સોનકભાઈ, મીલનભાઈ અને સમગ્ર પરીખ પરિવારના આભારી છીએ. એમની મદદથી અમે ઘણા જલમંદિરોનો જીર્ણોદ્ધાર કર્યો છે..

સમગ્ર પ્રકૃતિને સાતા આપનારા આ કાર્યમાં જોડાવવા આપ સૌને નમ્ર વિનંતી..

When we started the work of water conservation we found it tough. We also had apprehension about whether we would be successful or not. However doggedly we pursued the task on hand. The result is that till date we have been able to revive 285 lakes. 

Many have been helpful in this task which is the need of the hour.

The shortage of water has put several villages in a desperate situation. Our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has been promoting the concept of "catch the rain" for the last two years. The conservation measures have been initiated in these last 2 years. This mission of conservation of water should continue unabated. 

We have been desilting the lakes since last many years in order that the rain water is conserved in larger quantity. This work needs to be done more intensely.  We have started this mission apart from Banaskantha in Patan too. 

We desilted Banaskantha's old lake  with the help received from the villagers and Sanjaybhai Shah of Star Chemicals. Sanjaybhai has been helping VSSM in its water conservation & other works. It is because of well wishers like him that we have successfully desilted 285 lakes. We wish that more villages need to take this mission seriously so that more rain water is conserved in the lakes and the problem of water scarcity is resolved.

જળસંચયનું કાર્ય આરંભ્યુ એ વેળા આ કાર્ય બહુ અઘરુ લાગ્યું. સફળ થઈશું એ પ્રશ્નો પણ થયા. પણ ડગ્યા વગર લાગ્યા રહ્યા. એટલે 285 તળાવોનું નવીનીકરણ કરી શક્યા. ઘણા સ્વજનોએ આ કાર્ય માટે મદદ કરી એટલે આ શક્ય બન્યું. આજના સમયમાં આ સૌથી અગત્યનું કામ..

પાણીને લઈને વિકટ સ્થિતિમાં દેશના અનેક ગામો મુકાયા છે. આપણા વડાપ્રધાન શ્રી નરેન્દ્ર મોદીએ કેચ ધ રેઈન અભીયાન બે વર્ષ પહેલાં શરૃ કરેલું.. એ દરમ્યાન ગામોમાં વરસાદી પાણી રોકવા ઘણા પ્રયત્નો સરકારી રાહે થયા. પણ આ અભીયાન સતત ચાલે તે જરૃરી..

અમે વરસાદના ટીપે ટીપાને બચાવવા તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું કામ પાછલા ઘણા વર્ષથી કરીએ. પણ આ પ્રત્નોમાં હજુ સઘન કરવાની જરૃર છે. બનાસકાંઠા ઉપરાંત પાટણમાં પણ અમે તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાની મુહીમ હાથ ધરી.

બનાસકાંઠાનું જુના મોજરુનું તળાવ અમે ગામ અને આદરણીય સંજયભાઈ શાહ- સ્ટાર કેમીકલની મદદથી ખોદ્યું. સંજયભાઈ વર્ષોથી VSSM ને જળસંચય અને અન્ય કામોમાં સહયોગ કરે તેમના જેવા સ્વજનોની મદદ છે માટે જ 285 તળાવો ઊંડા કરી શક્યા છીએ.

ગામો પણ પોતાની રીતે તળાવો ઊંડા કરવા કટીબદ્ધ થાય ને ગામમાં વરસતા વરસાદના ટીપે ટીપાનું સરનામુ ગામનું જલ મંદિર બને તેવી અભ્યર્થના...

Raindrops get a sense of freedom from the clouds as they fall as rain on mother earth. Who doesn't like freedom ? Their freedom is temporary as we catch & confine them in our lakes.  We catch it for our benefit. It sounds a bit philosophical but it's nice.

We built lakes for our benefit. However, in this technological age the importance of lakes have reduced. In old days lakes/ponds were the heart of the village. All activities like bathing, washing clothes & vessels, water for animals etc used to take place at the lakes.

Then borewell came & water through pipes came into the tap of everyone's homes. Importance of lakes/ponds in the lives of people considerably reduced.

However to keep the water level from receding down lakes are important.

But we forgot the importance of lakes/ponds and today the water levels have fallen from 800feet to 12000feet.

We at VSSM have been actively enagaged in Banaskantha since 2016 to dredge, desilt lakes. Now in 2023 we have expanded our horizons to Patan, Mehsana & Sabarkantha areas. Lot of well wishers have been helping us in this activity but Shri Pratulbhai of. Shri K R Shroff Foundation have single handedly contributed towards the cost of 24 lakes. In fact we take pride in saying that we associated with Shri Pratulbhai in this task.

We dredged/desilted one lake with the help of villagers at Bodal in Banaskantha . Soon the rains arrived & in a very short time the lake got filled with water. Respected Ulhasbhai Paymaster contributed in desilting this lake. We are very much thankful to him for his very timely help.

It is our target to complete such 50 lakes in the year 2024. The society will help us in this noble cause.

વાદળ બંધન,

વરસાદ મુક્તિ..

ટીપાઓ વરસાદ થકી મુક્તિનો અનુભવ કરે.

મુક્તિ કોને ન ગમે? હરેક વ્યક્તિ મુક્તિ ઈચ્છે... છતાં બંધનો સાથે જીવવાનું..

ટીપાઓ વરસાદ રૃપે મુક્ત થયા પછી આપણે એને તળાવરૃપી બંધનમાં બાંધીએ.. આપણી સુખાકારી માટે આ કરીએ. વાત જરા ફીલોસોફીકલ લાગે.. પણ છે મજાની...

તળાવો બાંધવાનું માણસોએ પોતાની સુખાકારી માટે જ કર્યું.. ટેકનોલોજીના આ યુગમાં તળાવોનું મહત્વ ઘટ્યું. બાકી તળાવ ગામોનું હૃદય હોતા. નાહવાનું, કપડાં, વાસણ ધોવાનું, ઢોરને પાણી પીવાનું બધુંયે ત્યાં થતું. 

પછી બોરવેલ આવ્યા અને ઘરે ઘરે નળ પણ.. એટલે તળાવોનું અન્ય કામો માટેનું મહત્વ ઘટ્યું. પણ ભૂગર્ભજળની સપાટીને એકબંધ રાખવા એનું મહત્વ પાછુ એટલુ ને એટલું જ..

પણ આપણે તળાવની આ ભૂમિકા ભૂલ્યા. એટલે જ પાણીના તળ આજે 800 થી લઈને 12000 ફુટ સુધી પહોંચ્યા છે. 

અમે ભૂગર્ભજળ સાબદા થાય તે માટે તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું કરીયે. 2016 થી આ કાર્ય બનાસકાંઠાથી શરૃ કર્યું.  2023માં અમે પાટણ, મહેસાણા અને સાબરકાંઠામાં પણ આ કાર્ય વિસ્તાર્યું. ઘણા બધા સ્વજનોએ મદદ કરી પણ ડો.કે.આર.શ્રોફ ફાઉન્ડેશનના આદરણીય પ્રતુલભાઈએ એકલાએ 24 તળાવ કરવામાં સહયોગ કર્યો. આમ તો અમે સાથે રહીને આ તળાવો ગાળ્યા એમ કહેવું વધારે ઉચીત.

બનાસકાંઠાના બોડાલનું આ તળાવ. ગામલોકોની ભાગીદારીથી અમે ગાળ્યું ને મેઘરાજાની મહેર થકી એ સરસ ભરાયું. 

આદરણીય ઉલ્હાસભાઈ પે માસ્ટરે બોડાલનું તળાવ ગળાવવા માટે મદદ કરી. એ માટે તેમનો ઘણો ઘણો આભાર...

બસ આવતી સીઝન એટલે 2024માં 50 તળાવો ગાળવાનો લક્ષાંક છે. સમાજ સહયોગ કરશે તેવી આશા...

We don’t know if mystical Parasmani was for real or a fable; we have all heard about this alchemist who turned anything he touched in gold.  None of us have seen this fabled Parasmani, but one that we know for sure is water.  Anything water touches comes to life. 

We can claim that water is the alchemist we have seen.

But the alchemist we know is under tremendous pressure and deep trouble.  Our groundwater reserves are drying up at unprecedented speed. So it is a matter of concern if we could hand over to our coming generations water-sufficient earth. 

Humans have yet to crack the formula to make water, so they must respect the need to use it judiciously.  And by deepening lakes, VSSM is working towards creating water banks.

We were recently in Banaskantha’s Varan village, and everyone, including the local leaders, was concerned about falling water levels.  To address such concerns, VSSM works in partnership with the community, where the cost of JCB  to dig out the soil/deepen the lake is supported by  VSSM while the community lifts the excavated soil.  These efforts in partnership with the local community, are focused on catching as much rainwater as one can.

We must create as many reservoirs as we can.

The communities of Banaskantha have woken up to the call; hopefully, other regions also wake up to this alarm .

સાચુ ખોટુ તો નથી ખબર પણ પારસમણીની વાતો આપણે સૌએ સાંભળી છે. કહે છે કે, પારસમણી લોખંડને અડકે તો લોખંડ સોનુ બની જાય..

જેની વાતો સાંભળી છે એ પારસમણી તો અત્યાર સુધી દીઠો નથી પણ એક પારસમણી મે અને તમે સૌએ જોયું છે. એ છે પાણી.. પાણી ધરતી પર પડે ને બજંર જમીન પણ જીવંત થઈ જાય.

આમ આપણે જોયેલું પારસમણી એટલે પાણી એવું ચોક્કસ કહી શકાય.

પણ પાણી રૃપી પારસમણી અત્યારે જોખમકારક પરિસ્થિતિમાં મુકાયું છે. તળમાંથી પાણી ખુટી રહ્યા છે. આપણી ભાવી પેઢીને આપણે પાણીના સાબદા તળ આપી શકીશું કે કેમ તે પણ મોટો ચિંતાનો વિષય છે.

વળી કહે છે ને પાણીને બનાવી નથી શકાતુ માટે એને સાચવીને વાપરવાનું.

અમે સાચવીને વાપરવાનું તો કરીએ સાથે પાણીની મજબૂત બેંક ઊભી થાય તે માટે તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાના કાર્યો પણ કરીએ.

બનાસકાંઠાના વરણગામમાં હમણાં જવાનું થયું. સૌને તળના પાણી ઊંડા જઈ રહ્યા છે એની ચિંતા છે માટે ગામલોકો માટી ઉપાડવાનું કરે છે અને અમે તળાવ ખોદવા જેસીબી આપીયે છીએ. આમ સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી વરસાદ વરસે તેને ઝીલવા તળાવ રૃપી વાસણ તૈયાર કરીએ છીએ.

ગામમાં વધારે માત્રામાં તળાવો થાય તે આજની જરૃર છે..

બનાસકાંઠામાં લોકો જાગ્યા છે. અન્ય વિસ્તારમાં પણ આવી જાગૃતિની જરૃર છે..

“Our land has no water. Hence we are leasing our farmlands to solar power companies. In the last two years, 281 borewells have failed in our village. The water tables have dropped from 1000 to 1200 feet. If this continues, we will have to leave farming!”  The farmers of Vaasan village of Banaskantha’s Lakhani block shared with a heavy heart.

The uncontrolled practice of drilling borewells led to unceasing groundwater exploitation, leading to underground water table depletion. It would not be an exaggeration to say that we have dug our graves.

If we had woken up earlier and tried to conserve the rainwater, the water situation would not have been this abysmal. However, as they say, it is better late than never; if we wake up (in huge numbers) and pledge to conserve each drop of rainwater, we can reverse the looming water crisis.

For the past few years, VSSM has launched a participatory water management initiative in Banaskantha. The efforts have resulted in a deepening of 248 community lakes.

The lake of Vaasan is one of them. VSSM has also planted 16000 trees in this village, and what concerns us is getting enough water for these trees. There is hope of more trees bringing more rain, and the region is lush and green once again.

Apart from the rains, efforts from the government to bring Sardar Sarovar waters to Lakhani, Dhanera, Deesa regions will be immensely fruitful. The water in lakes will recharge the groundwater tables. 

VSSM’s team members Naranbhai, Maheshbhai, Hareshbhai, Ratnabhai work tirelessly and effectively to identify the villages and prepare them for the effort.

"અમારા ગામની જમીન અમે સોલારકંપનીઓને ભાડે આપી રહ્યા છીએ! તળમાં પાણી જ નથી શું કરવાનું? ગામના 281 બોરવેલ છેલ્લા બે વર્ષમાં ફેઈલ થઈ ગયા! પાણીના તળ 1000 થી લઈને 1200 ફૂટે પહોંચ્યા. જો આમ જ રહ્યું તો આગળના વર્ષોમાં અમારે ખેતી સાવ છોડવી પડશે."

બનાસકાંઠાના લાખણી તાલુકાના વાસણગામના ખેડૂતોએ ભારે હૈયે આ વાત કરી.

આમ તો બોરવેલ આવ્યા અને અમાપ પાણી જમીનમાંથી ઉલેચાયું એટલે ભૂગર્ભજળ ઊંડા ગયા. આમ આ બધી આફત આપણે પોતે જ સર્જી.

જો વેળાસર જાગ્યા હોત ને વરસાદી પાણીના ટીપે ટીપાને બચાવવાનું કર્યું હોત તો કદાચ આવી સ્થિતિ સાવ ન આવત.

ખેર પણ જાગ્યા ત્યારથી સવાર.. આપણે પાણીને સમજદારી પૂર્વક વાપરવાનું શરૃ કરીએ અને ખાસ ચોમાસામાં વરસતા વરસાદનું ટીપે ટીપુ બચાવીએ. આ નેમ જો લઈ શકીએ તો સ્થિતિ સુધરી શકે એમ છે.

અમે બનાસકાંઠામાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું પાછલા કેટલાક વર્ષોથી કરીએ. અત્યાર સુધી 248 થી વધુ તળાવો અમે ઊંડા કરી ચુક્યા છીએ.

આ વર્ષે વાસણનું તળાવ પણ ગામની ભાગીદારીથી ઊંડુ કર્યું. લોકોએ માટી ઉપાડવાનું કામ કર્યું. 

વાસણગામમાં અમે 16000 જેટલા વૃક્ષો પણ વાવ્યા છે. ચિંતા આ વૃક્ષોને પાણી મળી રહે એની છે. પણ કુદરત ધ્યાન રાખશે. વધારે વૃક્ષો થશે તો વરસાદ પણ આવશે ને આ પ્રદેશ પાછો પાણીદાર થશે.

વરસાદ સિવાય સરકાર નર્મદાના પાણી પણ લાખણી, ધાનેરા, ડીસા વિસ્તારમાં કોઈક રીતે પહોંચાડે. તળાવો ભરાવે તે પણ જરૃરી. 

અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ, મહેશભાઈ, હરેશભાઈ, રત્નાભાઈ સૌની પણ આમાં ભારે મહેનત. ગામોને શોધવા, તળાવ માટે તૈયાર કરવાનું કામ એ બખૂબી કરે. 

આશા રાખીએ સૌનું શુભ થશેની.. 

તળાવ ગળાવવાના કાર્યમાં અમને મદદ કરનાર સ્વજનોના આભારી છીએ.

A brief report pulished on VSSM's water conservation 
effort in Navgujarat Samay

For over five years, VSSM has been creating water shrines/repairing the community water bodies in Banaskantha. The number of lakes deepened has reached 228; after this season's end, we will have deepened 260 lakes. A mammoth task made possible due to the support we have received from our well-wishing donors.

This year even the government has helped us create water shrines in Sabarkantha's Poshina and Mehsana's Visnagar regions. I am thankful to Cabinet Minister Respected Shri Rushikeshbhai Patel, who is like an elder brother to me, for ensuring the water conservation efforts in the areas are covered under the Sujalam Sufalam Abhiyan.

Sadly, we could not cover the Banaskantha efforts under the Sujalam Sufalam initiative. Had the government agreed to partner with VSSM, we could have deepened more lakes.

Well, at times, it is difficult to understand the governmental nitty-gritty. On the one hand, we specially get called to participate in the meeting Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel calls for water management; there were detailed discussions with the officials who agreed to partner and take the work forward, only not to allot us work later. Some bitter truths we encounter during the course of our work.

The groundwater tables in North Gujarat have dropped to alarming levels, it is organizations like us who spend their funds and government authorities should consider partnering with us.

I hope we all wake up to the looming crisis. The rural communities are becoming proactive, hope the government, especially the officials, also comprehends this at the earliest.

બનાસકાંઠામાં જલમંદિર નિર્માણ કાર્ય ઘણા વર્ષથી કરીયે. 228 તળાવ અત્યાર સુધી ઊંડા કર્યા અને આ સીઝનમાં 260નો આંકડો પાર કરીશું. ઘણા બધા સ્વજનોની મદદથી આ કાર્ય થયું.

આ વર્ષે તો સરકારે પણ સાબરકાંઠાના પોશીના વિસ્તારમાં અને મહેસાણાના વીસનગરમાં જલમંદિર થાય એ માટે મદદ કરી. સુજલામ સુફલામ અભિયાન અંતર્ગત તળાવો આ બે જિલ્લામાં  ઊંડા થાય તે માટે આદરણીય અને મારા મોટાભાગ જેવા માનનીય મંત્રી શ્રી ઋષીકેશભાઈ પટેલે ઘણી મદદ કરી. તેમની આભારી છું.

જો કે બનાસકાંઠામાં અમને સુજલામ સુફલામ અંતર્ગત કામ ન મળ્યું એનુ દુઃખ પણ છે. સરકાર પૈસા ખર્ચે છે VSSM સાથે આ વિસ્તારમાં તળાવ ઊંડા કરવામાં ભાગીદારી કરી હોત તો અમે થોડા વધારે તળાવ કરી શક્યા હોત..

ખેર ક્યારેક આ સરકારી માથાકૂટ નથી સમજાતી. એક બાજુ રાજ્યના મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી ભુપેન્દ્રભાઈ પટેલની અધ્યક્ષતામાં જળસંચય સંદર્ભે મીટીંગ થાય ત્યાં અમને ખાસ બોલાવવામાં આવે. અધિકારીગણ સાથે કામો સંદર્ભે બધી વાતો થાય. ત્યારે અધિકારી હા પણ પાડે પણ પછી કામ જ ન આપે.. આ કડવી વાસ્તવીકતા છે..

ઉત્તર ગુજરાતમાં ભૂગર્ભજળ ભયજનક સ્થિતિએ પહોંચ્યા છે. ત્યારે અમારા જેવી સંસ્થાઓ જે સાચા મનથી પોતાના ગાંઠના ખર્ચતી હોય તેની સાથે તો ભાગીદારી અવશ્ય કરવી જોઈએ..

ખેર સવેળા સૌ જાગે એ ઈચ્છનીય. બાકી ગ્રામજનો પોતે હવે જાગ્યા છે. ત્યારે સરકાર ખાસ કરીને અધિકારીગણ સમજે એ જરૃરી...

નવગુજરાત સમયે જળસંચયના અમે કરેલા કાર્યોને સરસ કવર કર્યું એ માટે આભારી છું.

 "We are now experiencing a little relief with drinking water availability for drinking and domestic use, but there was a time when we bathed once a week. All we could afford was to sponge ourselves and get on with our chores. Women fighting over the water was a daily affair, and when water tankers reached our village, there was mayhem. The water pots and all the water-carrying vessels suffered bruises and dents, so much so that the nomadic smiths would stay put for up to a month to finish the repair jobs." Tadav's ex-sarpanch, Shri Pravinsinh Rajput, narrated the water woes Banaskantha experienced in the past. 

In recent times Gujarat has seen significant improvement in drinking water accessibility, but the same is not for agriculture. The rampant and unchecked groundwater extraction has pushed its tables to as low as 1200 feet. While the government has launched water conservation efforts to raise groundwater levels, voluntary actions are also made in the same direction. 

It has been almost seven years since VSSM launched water conservation efforts in Banaskantha. As a result of the community participation efforts, we have successfully deepened 200 lakes in various villages. Last year we furthered these efforts into Sabarkatha. This year we plan to extend the lake-deepening efforts to neighboring  Mehsana. VSSM has been receiving tremendous support from respected minister Shri Hrishikesh Patel. 

We have begun deepening the first lake of the season in Banaskantha.

This year we have raised our target of the number of lakes to be deepened; to get desired results, it would be better if civil society comes forward ad chooses to support these efforts.

"પાણીનું સુખ હવે થયું. હાલ પીવા અને વાપરવા છૂટથી પાણી મળે બાકી એક વખત હતો જ્યારે નાહવાનો વારો એક અઠવાડિયે આવતો. બાકી રોજ ભીનો ગાભો શરીર પર ફેરવી નીશાળ જતા રહેવાનું. બહેનોમાં મહત્તમ ઝઘડા પાણીને લઈને થતા.. ટેન્કર આવે ત્યારે પડાપડી હોય. દરેકના ઘરે પાણી ભરવાના વાસણ ઘડા, દેગડા, ચરુડીઓમાં ઘોબા એટલે હોતા કે અમારા વિસ્તારમાં કંસારા વાસણ ઠીક ઠાક કરવા આવે તો લગભગ મહિનો મહિનો ગામમાં રોકાતા. એમને એટલું કામ મળતું. "

બનાસકાંઠાના વાવના ટડાવગામના ભૂતપૂર્વ સરપંચ શ્રી પ્રવિણસીંહ રાજપૂતે આ વાત કરી.

ગુજરાતના ઘણા વિસ્તારોમાં પીવાના પાણીને લઈને હખ થઈ ગયું છે. પણ ખેતીમાં એવું હખ બધે નથી થયું. ભૂગર્ભજળ ઊંડા જઈ રહ્યા છે. 800 થી લઈને ક્યાંક 1200 ફૂટે પાણી મળે છે.

આવામાં સરકાર પણ પોતાની રીતે જળસંચયના કામો કરી તળ ઉપર લાવવા કોશીશ કરે. તો ક્યાંક લોકો સ્વંયમ ભૂ પ્રયત્નો કરે. 

VSSM પણ છેલ્લા છ - સાત વર્ષથી બનાસકાંઠામાં #જળસંચયના કાર્યો કરે. અત્યાર સુધી  200 તળાવો અમે ગ્રામજનોની ભાગીદારીથી ઊંડા કર્યા. 

ગત વર્ષથી સાબરકાંઠામાં પણ આ કાર્યો આરંભ્યા છે. આ વર્ષે બનાસકાંઠા, સાબરકાંઠા ઉપરાંત #મહેસાણા જિલ્લામાં પણ તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું કાર્ય કરીશું. આદરણીય શ્રી #ઋષીકેશભાઈ_પટેલ માનનીય મંત્રી શ્રીની અમારા માટે ઘણી લાગણી એમની મદદ પણ આ કાર્યમાં મળી રહી છે. 

બનાસકાંઠાના બલોઘરગામમાં અમે આ સીઝનનું પ્રથમ તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. ગામનો સહયોગ અદભૂત. રોઝી બ્લુ ઈન્ડિયા પ્રા.લી. આ ગામનું તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવામાં અમને મદદ કરે. એમનો ઘણો આભાર.. 

આ વર્ષ ઘણા #તળાવો કરવાનો મનોરથ સેવ્યો છે. સમાજ પણ સહયોગ કરે તો ઘણું ઉમદા કાર્ય થઈ શકે.

We had pledged to deepen and dredge 40 lakes this year; thanks to our team's hard work, we have fulfilled the pledge. Apart from Banaskantha, we have dredged three lakes in Sabarkantha and 1 in Patan.

Thankfully, the rural communities are waking up to the looming water crisis. They do not try to escape the responsibility of lifting the excavated soil; instead, they voluntarily come forward to ferry the soil in their tractors. Apart from it, they also contribute to deepening their lakes further.

A transition we can attribute to the ongoing water conservation and tree plantation campaigns VSSM has carried out since 2015. In the beginning, no one tried to understand or played heed to our appeals. The groundwater tables are dropping to an alarmingly low level, but because they continued to receive water by digging borewells and emptying the earth's belly, the communities felt no need to take measures for water conservation. However, there is an increased awareness of the looming water crisis, which is why people have begun recharging their wells, lakes, farm ponds, borewells and other water sources.

It is always better late than never, and the changing scenario makes us happy, nonetheless.

I was in Bhabhar's Nesda village recently. The lake in the village was dredged in partnership with Unidesign Jewellery Private Limited. The community, too, was responding with great enthusiasm. However, a minor canal of Sardar Sarovar passes 2.5 kilometres from the lake; the community has been requesting a connection to fill up the lake with Narmada waters. If the lake gets filled a couple of times a year, the depleted water tables may rise. 

We will be appealing to the government regarding the same.

However, like Nesda village, villages must take up the task of repairing water-holding reservoirs.

And we are grateful to all who have contributed to and supported the deepening of this and other lakes.

જલમંદિરો...

આ વર્ષે 40 તળાવો કરવાનો લક્ષાંક નક્કી કરેલો અને અમારી ટીમની મહેનતથી આ લક્ષાંક પૂર્ણ કર્યો. 

આ વર્ષે બનાસકાંઠા ઉપરાંત સાબરકાંઠામાં ત્રણ અને પાટણમાં એક તળાવ કર્યું...

ગામલોકો તળાવ ઊંડા કરવા બાબત હવે જાગૃત થયા છે. પહેલાંની જેમ માટી ઉપાડવા ટ્રેકટર અને ખોદકામ માટે જેસીબી તમે મુકો એમ હવે નથી કહેતા. માટી ઉપાડવાનું ગામલોકો સ્વયંમ ભૂ કરતા થયા છે. વળી આ ઉપરાંત ફાળો પણ પોતાનું તળાવ વધારે ઊંડુ કરવા આપતા થયા છે. 

બનાસકાંઠામાં પાણીની પારાયણ 2015માં શરૃ કરી એ પછીનું આ પરિણામ.. પહેલાં આ વિસ્તારમાં કોઈ આ વાત સમજવા જ તૈયાર નહોતું. મૂળ બોરવેલથી પાણી મળતું તળ ઊંડા જઈ રહ્યા હતા પણ તોય પાણી મળતું પણ હવે લોકોને સમજાઈ રહ્યું છે કે આપણે આપણી પાણીની બેંક ખાલી કરી નાખી છે.એટલે જ તળાવ, ખેતતલાવડી, કૂવા, બોરવેલ રિચાર્જના કાર્યો થવા માંડ્યા છે. 

બનાસકાંઠા પાણી માટે જાગૃત બન્યું એનો રાજીપો..

હમણાં ભાભરના નેસડાગામમાં જવાનું થયું. ત્યાંનું ગામતળાવ VSSM એ ગામની ભાગીદારીથી અને યુનીડીઝાઈન જ્વેલરી ઈન્ડિયા પ્રા.લી.ની મદદથી ઊંડુ કર્યું. ગામલોકોનો ઉત્સાહ પણ જબરો... તળાવમાં પાણીનો આવરો તો છે. સાથે અઢી કી.મી. દૂરથી નર્મદાની માઈનોર કેનાલ જાય છે. લોકોની માંગણી આ કેનાલમાંથી તળાવમાં કનેક્શન આપવાની પણ ખરી. મૂળ કનેક્શન હોય તો ચોમાસા સિવાય પણ તળાવમાં પાણી ભરાય ને આવું વર્ષમાં ત્રણેક વખત થાય તો પાણીના તળ જે 800 થી 1000 ફૂટે પહોંચ્યા છે તે ઉપર આવે..

સરકાર ગામની આ માંગણી પૂરી કરે તે માટે અમે પણ રજૂઆત કરીશું...

પણ નેસડાગામની જેમ દરેક ગામ પોતાના તળાવો- પાણી ભરવાના વાસણો સાબદા કરે તે આજની જરૃર.... 

આ તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવામાં મદદ કરનાર સૌનો આભાર...

“Ben, our village reels under severe water challenges. 150-200 ft under the ground, we hit the rocks. To have water in our wells and drill borewells, we must keep our lakes healthy. Since the community here values water and understands its importance, it has always tried to dredge and maintain the lakes without any support from the government. Can you please help us deepen our lakes? this request to you is not to help us gratuitously; we will contribute to the efforts and lift the dredged muck/soil.” Mahendibhai from Sabarkantha came to us with this request.

Mahendibhai has requested us to visit their village for the last three months. Despite our efforts, we found it hard to make it to Kanai. Also, it was a village in Sabarkantha and we weren’t prepared to venture into a new region. However, we had our apprehensions because of our past experiences of false promises. Community leadership would invite us to work in their village, but they would back out when the contribution was requested.

Nonetheless, giving in to Tohid and Mahendibhai’s request, we visited Kanai village not just to see the lake to be dredged but also to see the site for tree plantation as promised.

The local leadership had arranged for a Gram Sabha where Mahendibhai introduced VSSM, its initiatives and its approach. The community agreed to contribute to the lake deepening and tree plantation drive. Although the water scarcity in the village is absolute, the availability of water would help them with agriculture and cattle farming. The unity at Kanai village is exceptional; we haven’t come across many proactive villages like this one.

Of course, there was an imminent need to deepen the lake in Kanai. Hence, we put in a request to Krishnakant Uncle, who immediately agreed to support the task.

We will be building ‘Sanjeev Jalashay’ with the contribution of the villagers.

The village has also earmarked enough land to plant 10,000 trees; if they can provide water, VSSM will plant trees on the allotted site.

We have initiated water conservation efforts in Sabarkantha; two lakes were deepened in the tribal region of Poshina (more on that later). But, of course, the desire is to have more proactive villages like Kanai.

સાબરકાંઠાથી...

"બેન અમારા ગામમાં પાણીની ખુબ મુશ્કેલી છે. 150 થી 200 ફૂટે કાળો પથ્થર આવી જાય. બોરવેલ ને કૂવા અમે કરીએ. પણ આ બધામાં પાણી આવે તે માટે અમારા ગામના તળાવો અમારે સાબદા રાખવા પડે. એટલે અમારા કનઈવાસીઓએ સરકારની મદદ વગર જાતે અમારા તળાવો શક્ય ઊંડા કરવા કોશીશ કરી છે. અમને પાણીનું મહત્વ ખબર છે. તમે અમારા ગામનું તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવા મદદ કરો. અમને મફત કશું નથી જોઈતું અમે પણ ફાળો આપીશું, માટી ઉપાડીશું."

સાબરકાંઠાના કનઈગામના મહેંદીભાઈએ આ કહ્યું. 

આમ તો છેલ્લા છ મહિનાથી એ પોતાના ગામમાં આવવાનું નિમંત્રણ આપી રહ્યા હતા. પણ સંજોગો નહોતો થતા. વળી અમે નવા વિસ્તારમાં જવા તૈયાર નહીં. મૂળ ભાગીદારીની વાતો ઘણા કરે પણ ખરા અર્થમાં ભાગીદારીની વાત આવે ત્યારે લોકો ફસકી જાય માટે નથી કરવું એવું મન બનાવેલું..

પણ અમારા કાર્યકર તોહીદ અને મહેંદીભાઈના આગ્રહને વશ તળાવ જોવા સાથે એમણે પોતાના ગામમાં વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા પણ એક જગ્યા આપવા કહેલું તે એ જોવા ખાસ ગયા.અમે ગામમાં પહોંચ્યા તો ગામે સરસ ગ્રામસભાનું આયોજન કરેલું ને સૌને VSSM કેવી રીતે કામ કરે તે મહેંદીભાઈએ સમજાવેલું. ગ્રામસભામાં સૌએ તળાવ ઊડું કરવા અને વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા શક્ય તમામ સહયોગની ખાત્રી આપી.

આખા ગામનો સંપ જબરજસ્ત. આવા સંપીલા ગામ મે ખાસ જોયા નથી. પાણીની સખત મુશ્કેલી. ખેતીની બે સીઝન એ લોકો લે. પણ ખેતી કરતા વધુ પાણી મળે તો પશુપાલન થઈ શકે તેવું તેમણે કહ્યું.

સ્થિતિ સમજી તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવું જરૃરી લાગ્યું ને અમારા ક્રિષ્ણકાંત અંકલ(મહેતા)ને મદદ કરવા કહ્યુ ને એમણે તુરત એ માટે હા પાડી. 

સંજીવ જળાશય અમે બાંધીશું ગામ પણ ભાગીદારી નોંધાવશે. સાથે લગભગ 10,000 વૃક્ષો ઉછરી શકે તેવી જગ્યા પણ ગામે આપી. ગામ પાણીની વ્યવસ્થા કરી આપશે તો વૃક્ષો પણ વાવીશું અને ઉછેરીશું. અને હા સાબરકાંઠામાં જળસંચયના કાર્યો શરૃ કર્યા. #પોશિના આદિવાસી વિસ્તાર ત્યાં આ વર્ષે બે તળાવ ગાળ્યા.. એની વાત ફરી ક્યારેક... પણ દરેક ગામોમાં કનઈ જેવો સંપ થાય તે ઈચ્છનીય...
