“Ben, please do something to ensure our community’s name enters the official list…. Maheshbhai tried so hard to get us plots but, the officials simply refused by saying our community is not on the list of nomadic communities. But Ben, you were saying that we are on the list so how come the officials refused, why is our community still excluded?”

The Bharthari of Banaskantha, Patan and Mehsana survive under abject poverty. They earn their living by singing cradlesongs to the newborns, play the one string Ravan-hatta and make do with the alms they received.

The Banaskantha floods of 2015 were devastating for the homeless families like Bharthari who stayed in makeshift shanties in the banks of the village lake.

Recently, I happen to meet Maniben Bharthari, who had lost all her belongings to the floods. “There was no question of saving our belongings. We barely managed to save our Rationcards, Voter ID cards, raise our hands over the head and walk out of the flood waters. (she describes us how they managed to save their precious documents).

Maniben stays in a shanty and was dreaming of a house, the Bharthari have been included in the official list and they were to receive residential plots. Obtaining the plots would require caste certificate but, when the families reached the government office they found their community missing. The government has added this community to the list but the online update is yet to be happen. Hence, the applications were not accepted and the entire process once again got delayed…..

We have written to the government in this regard. Hopefully there is a solution soon….  

Nomadic and De-notified communities are sure the government will pay attention to their plight and struggle to survive.

Vali Ma #Bajaniya, lives by the roadside near Viramgaum’s Handalpur cross-roads. Her abode is open to sky and her few belongings strewn across where she sits and sleeps near the roadside. Vali Ma is a #widow and physically challenged but she, has never received any assistance from any of the government schemes. Recently the efforts of #VSSM’s Kanubhai helped her obtain a ration card. However, a residential plot for which we have been trying since years, seems a distant dream!

Vali Ma has been staying on wasteland near this crossroads for years but the villagers have had some issues and made her leave the place hence, she now lives next to the road. She came all the way to Palanpur from Viramgaam she walks with her hands and that is what she did. “Can anyone think of giving my hands some rest, I have spent my entire life like so but a house remains out of reach.”

The people of #nomadic and de-notified communities have always believed that the government is their #guardian angel and will work to provide them better life since that has not happened these communities are now getting restless are asking #government to look at them, know that they also exist. They are sure the government will pay attention to their plight and struggle to #survive. Like Vali Ma, they are prepared to endure challenges to put their message across. If the government does not pay attention now, we will walk all the way to #Gandhinagar even with these hands but, will make them notice, ‘we also exist’.

Look how with great difficulty, Vali Ma reached the venue of the ‘We also Exist’ convention.

વિરમગામમાં હાંસલપુર ચોકડી પાસે આભનું ઓઢવાનું ને ધરતીનું પાથરણુ પાથરીને વાલીમા બજાણિયા રહે. વિધવા ને વિકલાંગ વાલી માને ના જડી વિધવા કે વિકલાંગ સહાય. રેશનકાર્ડેએ હમણાં VSSMના કાર્યકર કનુભાઈની મદદથી મળ્યું. બાકી પ્લોટ માટે તો વર્ષોની દોડાદોડી પણ તેનો અંત ના આવ્યો.

ચોકડી પાસેની ખરાબાની જગ્યામાં વર્ષોથી રેતા પણ હમણાં હમણાં ગામના લોકોને કાંઈક વાંધો પડ્યો તે ત્યાંથી કાઢી મુક્યા. હાલ તો રોડની બાજુમાં બે ચાર ગાભા ને ગોદડાં લઈને રહે છે.

અમે પણ છીએ કહેવા એ ઠેઠ વિરમગામથી પગે નહીં પણ હાથે ચાલીને આવ્યા. વાલી માં કે છે એમ ‘ભઈ સાબ હવે મારા હાથને વિશ્રોમ આલો. ઘર આલો. આખી જીંદગી ઓમ જતી રહી પણ ઘર નસીબ ના થ્યું.’

સરકાર અમારી માઈ- બાપ એવું માનનાર તમામ વિચરતી વિમુક્ત જાતિના લોકો હવે સરકાર પાસે જઈને ‘અમે પણ છીએ’ અમારી સામે જુઓની વાત કરવા માંડ્યા છે. વાલીમા જેવી લગન વિચરતી જાતિઓને થઈ છે. એટલે સરકાર અમારી હોમુ તાકશે જ ઈમો બે મત નહીં. ન ના તાક તો ઠેઠ ગોંધીનગર પગે ને પગ ના હોય 

તો હાથે હેડીન જઈશું પણ હવે તો અમાર કઈ જ દેવું સક અમે સીએ...

સંમેલનમાં કેવી મુશ્કેલી વેઠીને વાલી માં પહોંચ્યા એ જાતે જ જુઓ...

What’s the hurry for a home, we shall build you a toilet first!!

Since last many years few Meer families have called Lakhani their home. Somea five years back the government also sanctioned residential plots to these families however is yet to sanction the assistance for building a home. The efforts of VSSM’s Naran has also helped these families receive Antyodya ration cards. The wandering Meers come to Lakhani every month to collect their ration from government ration shop. Every time they are in Lakhani they pay a visit to their plots.

 “We were here to collect our ration and when we visited the plots we see these structures on our plots. A close look reveled they were toilets. We do not know how they have come up here!! There are no compost pits around the toilets just such boxes have been erected on our land!!” informed Malabhai.

We understand toilet units are important but,  these families should be staying there, they need to have a house first and toilets without compost pits to dispose the waste is sheer waste of the precious financial resources.  Don’t you agree??

આ જુઓન ઘર બન્યા નહીં ન સરકારે આ ટીટી(શૌચાલય) બનાઈ દીધા.

લાખણીમાં મીર પરિવારો વર્ષોથી રહે. સરકારે પાંચેક પરિવારને રહેવા વર્ષો પહેલાં પ્લોટ ફાળવ્યા. પણ મકાન સહાય હજુ મળી નથી. મીર કામ ધંધા માટે ગામડાંઓમાં ફરે. Vssm અને કાર્યકર નારણની મહેનતથી મીરને અંત્યોદય રેશનકાર્ડ મળ્યા. એટલે રાશન લેવા દર મહિને આ પરિવારો લાખણી આવે અને આવે એટલે પોતાના પ્લોટ પર આંટો પણ મારી આવે.

માલાભાઈ કે છે કે, ‘આ ફેરા દુકોનેથી રાસન લઈન ઓય ઓટો મારવા આયો તો અમારી જગ્યામાં આ ટીટી ઊભા કરી દીધાતા. કુને બોધ્યા ખબર નઈ પણ ખાડા ક એવુંયે કોય કર્યું નઈ. ખાલી ખોખા ઊભા થઈ ગ્યા.’

શૌચાલય બને તેને અનુમોદન પણ તે પહેલાં ઘર થાય તે જરૃરી છે અને સૌથી અગત્યનું શૌચાલયનો લોકો ઉપયોગ કરી શકે તેવા બનાવાય તો એ કામનું નહીં તો શોષ ખાડા વગર એ શું કામના?
