“Can you help us plant trees at the ganda-baval infested crematorium of our village?” Banaskantha’s Samaumota village’s Sarpanch calls us with this request. VSSM’s Naranbhai and Maheshbhai visited the village to evaluate the onsite conditions.

The crematorium had live fencing, but the ganda-baval trees needed to be removed. The milk cooperative pitched in and we cleared the ganda baval bust from the site. And the Panchayat has helped bring water to the site. 

Once the basic requirements were met, it was time for VSSM  to begin digging the pits for the plantation. However, the soil is too tight to be drilled in; hence after digging 900 holes, we decided to wait for rain to soften the ground. We will dig up and plant the trees in one go. We will also set up a drip irrigation facility and appoint a Vriksh Mitra. We plan to plant 3000 trees at Samaumota.

The forest department will be helping us with the saplings. The collective efforts of village leadership, forest department and VSSM will ensure the village crematorium turns lush with trees.

 'અમારા ગામનું સ્મશાન ગાંડા બાવળથી ભરેલું છે. ત્યાં સારા વૃક્ષો વાવવા છે તમે મદદ કરશો?'

#બનાસકાંઠાના ડીસાના સમૌમોટાગામથી ગામના સરપંચ શ્રીનો ફોન આવ્યો ને અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ, મહેશભાઈએ સ્મશાનની મુલાકાત લીધી. 

સ્મશાન ફરતે વંડો કરેલો હતો. હવે જરૃર હતી ગાંડાબાવળને હટાવવાની. ગામની દૂધમંડળીએ એ માટે સહયોગ કર્યો ને સ્મશાનમાંથી ગાંડાબાવળને તીલાંજલી આપી. પાછુ પંચાયતે ત્યાં પાણીની સુવિધા પણ કરી આપી.

હવે અમારી ભૂમીકા શરૃ થઈ. અમે ખાડા કરવાની શરૃઆત કરી. પણ જમીન ઘણી કઠણ 900 ખાડા કરીને રહેવા દીધું. એક વરસાદ થઈ જાય પછી ખાડા કરી વૃક્ષો વાવવાનું સાથે સાથે કરી લઈશું. 

અંદાજે 3000 થી વધારે વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવાના સંકલ્પ સાથે વાવીશું. ડ્રીપની વ્યવસ્થા પણ કરીશું. સાથે પગારદાર માણસ જેને અમે વૃક્ષમિત્ર કહીએ તે પણ રાખી લઈશું.

વનવિભાગ પણ વૃક્ષો આપવામાં શક્ય મદદ કરશે. આમ ગામ, દૂધમંડળી, VSSM અને #વનવિભાગના સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી સમૌમોટાનું સ્મશાન #હરિયાળુ કરવાનો અમે પ્રયાસ કરીશું.

We want to change the face of our crematorium," village elders tell us.

And then they launched the massive operation of clearing the 'ganda-baval' trees around the crematorium. They also constructed a boundary wall and fence. Supported by GACL, we planted the trees, installed drip irrigation facility and appointed a vriksh mitra.

The committed efforts of the tree committee ensured most of the planted trees survived.

If each village strives to work as dedicatedly as Vakha village, each of our village can turn into 'nandanvan'

વખાની માળી સમાજની સ્મશાનભૂમી..

ગામના વડીલોએ કહ્યું, અમારે અમારુ સ્મશોન અસલ કરવું હ્.

પછી તો શું ગાંડાબાવળથી ભરેલા આ સ્મશાનભૂમીની સફાઈ એમણે જાતે કરી. દિવાલ, વાડ બધુયે કર્યું ને અમે VSSM થકી વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા સાથે ડ્રીપની વ્યવસ્થા ને વૃક્ષોની સંભાળ રાખી શકે તેવા વૃક્ષમિત્રની નિમણૂક કરી. 

આ કાર્ય માટે મદદ કરી GACL સંસ્થાએ.. 

ગામની વૃક્ષમંડળીની ધગશ ઘણી એટલે વાવેલા વૃક્ષોમાંથી મહત્તમ ઉછરી રહ્યા છે. 

દરેક ગામ વખા જેવી ધગશથી કાર્ય કરે તો દરેક ગામ નંદનવન બની જાય..

આભાર GACL અને ગ્રામજનોનો તમે અમને ધરતીમાને હરિયાળી કરવાનો મોકો આપ્યો.

We planted 4500 trees at Surana’s crematorium. Henceforth, I will not mention ‘with the pledge to raise’ because planting and raising are woven together; it cannot be any other way.

Chandubhai has been appointed as the Vriksha Mitra. I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I said both Chandu and his wife toil through the day to ensure that the trees are well looked after. Whenever we are in the area and go to meet the trees,  Chandu would be found quietly working with them, replaying only to the questions asked. 

We are raising trees at 52 sites and I have visited all of them after the monsoon. I was required to tell the Vriksha Mitra at all the sites to keep the sites clean but not to Chandubhai. He had already ensured the sites he maintained were clean. The two sites he nurtures aren’t compact. The crematorium has 3000 trees growing while the school site has 1500 trees. Of course, Chandu has the support of the villagers.

The trees at both these sites are being raised with support from Rosy Blue Diamonds (Pvt) Ltd.

This year we have decided to raise 1.5 lac trees but managed only 1.3 lac trees. Next year we plan to increase the number to 3.5 lac trees. We hope the village leadership are prepared to spare land in their villages and facilitate such woodlands. Their participation and contribution will also ensure we succeed in establishing more ‘Tree-Temples’

સુરાણાગામના સ્મશાનમાં અને ગામની નિશાળામાં અમે 4500 વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા. હવે ઉછેરવાના સંકલ્પ સાથે એવું નહીં લખું.. ઉછેરવાનું તો એની સાથે વણાયેલું જ છે. 

આ વૃક્ષોને સાચવવા અમે વૃક્ષમિત્ર તરીકે ભાઈ ચંદુને રાખ્યો. તેની પત્ની અને તે રીતસર કાળી મજૂરી કરે એમ કહેવું કાંઈ ખોટું નથી.

જ્યારે પણ વૃક્ષોને મળવા જવું ત્યારે ચંદુ સ્મશાનમાં કામ કરતો જ હોય એય ચુપચાપ. પુછુ એટલાનો જ જવાબ આપે. 

અમે કુલ 52 સાઈટ પર વૃક્ષો ઉછેરી રહ્યા છીએ.. ચોમાસા પછી આ બધી સાઈટની મુલાકાતે ગઈ તે બધી સાઈટ પર સફાઈ કરવા વૃક્ષમિત્રોને કહેવું પડ્યું. પણ સુરાણામાં ચંદુને આ બાબતે કોઈ જ ટકોર કરવી ન પડી. એણે પોતાની રીતે સફાઈ શરૃ કરી દીધેલી. વળી સ્મશાનની સાઈટ કાંઈ નાની નહીં એમાં ત્રણ હજાર વૃક્ષો ઉછરે...ને નિશાળામાં 1500..

ચંદુને ગામનો સહકાર તો હોય જ...

VSSM ને આ બેય સાઈટમાં વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા મદદ કરી. રોઝી બ્લુ ડાયમન્ડસ (ઈન્ડિયા) પ્રા.લી. 

આ વર્ષે 1.5 લાખ વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવાનો નિર્ધાર હતો પણ 1.30 સુધી જ અમે પહોંચી શક્યા.. આવતા વર્ષે 3.5 લાખ ઉછેરવાનો સંકલ્પ છે એ માટે ગામો સજ્જ થાય ને પોતાની ગામની જગ્યાઓ આપે. સાથે ભાગીદારી નોંધાવવા તૈયારી પણ દાખવે તો જ વધારે વૃક્ષમંદિરો સ્થાપી શકીશું...

સુરાણામાં વૃક્ષમંદિરો ઊભા થાય તે માટે મદદ કરનાર ગ્રામજનો, વનવિભાગ અને રોઝી બ્લુનો ઘણો આભાર ને વિશેષ આભાર ચંદુને તેની પત્નીનો કે જે મન લગાવી વૃક્ષોનું જતન કરી રહ્યા છે...

The Rain Gods are upset with us…

When rains fail, it is the farmers who face the worst impact.

“Ben, there is hardly any water left for our borewells to draw out.” The farmers complained. It was tough to watch such pathetic condition of individuals who grow our food. The regions where the water of Narmada has reached through the Sardar Sarovar Canal are not undergoing any turmoil but regions like Lakhni, Tharad, Disa, Dhanera are struggling for water.

Farmers from numerous regions are appealing to the government to make provision for the Narmada water to reach their village. VSSM will do the needful and appeal to the government but until that happens we need to plan for our greener future, we are planting trees that help bring rain. VSSM is striving to achieve its goal of making Banaskantha green and water sufficient through a massive tree plantation campaign.

We are planting 7500 trees in Achwadiya village with the support of our dear and respected Krishnakant uncle and Indira auntie. To ensure that each planted tree survives and grows well, we will also appoint a Vriksha Mitr for three years.

Despite changing climate, rising temperatures and dwindling natural resources,  we haven't to value the significant role they play in our existence. It is our responsibility to pass on a planet that is environmentally healthy and blooming with an abundance of natural resources. We need to rewire our environmental priorities and remain committed to achieving those. 

 વાત અછવાડિયાથી...

ખેડૂતોએ ત્રાહીમામ પોકાર્યું...

બેન અમારા બોર ડચકા લે છે તો કોઈ કહે, અમારા બોરવેલ ફેઈલ થઈ ગયા.. જગતના તાતની આ દશા સાંભળી દુઃખ થાય.

બનાસકાંઠામાં મા રેવાના પાણી પહોંચવાથી ઘણા વિસ્તારને ફાયદો થયો. પણ લાખણી, થરાદ, ડીસા, ધાનેરા વગેરે વિસ્તારો પાણી ઝંખી રહ્યા છે. નર્મદાના પાણી પહોંચે એ માટે ગામે ગામથી ખેડૂતો રજૂઆત કરી રહ્યા છે. 

સરકારના કાને એ વાત નાખીશું ને નક્કર કામ થાય તે માટે પ્રયત્નો પણ કરીશું પણ ત્યાં સુધી વરસાદ લાવવામાં ઉપયોગી વૃક્ષોનો ઉછેર થાય તે માટે અમે મથી રહ્યા છીએ.

અછવાડિયાગામના સ્મશાનમાં અમે આદરણીય ક્રિષ્ણકાંત અને ઈન્દિરા મહેતા અમે પ્રેમથી અંકલ આન્ટી કહીએ તેમની અને ગામની મદદથી 7500 વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવાનું કરી રહ્યા છીએ. 

વાવેલા વૃક્ષો ઉછરે એ માટે ત્રણ વર્ષ સુધી પગારદાર માણસ પણ રાખીશું. 

દુષ્કાળની પરિસ્થિતિ સર્જાય ત્યારે આપણને પાણી અને વૃક્ષોનું મહત્વ વધારે સમજાય છે. પણ મારા ખ્યાલથી આપણે આ દિશામાં ઘણું કરવાનું બાકી છે. આપણી આવનારી પેઢીને સાબદા પાણીના તળ આપવાની સાથે સાથે સૌ સુખેથી રહી શકે તેવું ઓક્સિજન યુક્ત જગત આપવા માટે આપણે કટીબદ્ધ થવાની જરૃર છે.

“Yes of course I will do it, there is no  task  as noble as raising  trees. These trees have favoured me a lot, I will surely take up the task.”

We  found Roopsinhbhai in Bhimpura, a person who showers love and affection on the trees as he would on  his own children.  He was responding to our inquiry whether he would be interested in taking up the responsibility of raising the trees we intend to plant  in his village as part of VSSM’s campaign to make Banaskantha green and water sufficient once again.

We have initiated the planning for the mentioned campaign of planting trees. Meetings are underway to decide the first phase of villages to be covered under the tree plantation drive during this monsoon. There are villages who have approached us with the request of planting trees in their villages. If they agree to the precondition of providing contribution and take up the responsibility of watering and caring for  the trees regularly only then will we initiate the program in any village.

We had a meeting in Bhimpura with the community leaders Khumabhai and others. They agreed to raising Rs. 20 every month per house and water the trees as well. The amount raised will serve as remuneration to be paid to the person assigned the responsibility of raising and nurturing the trees. If required VSSM shall contribute,  provided the village has played its part of raising the amount. The leadership of Bhimpura have agreed to this pre-condition.

It was Khumabhai who suggested we assign the responsibility to  Roopsinhbhai.

“If there are 4-5 households who do not pay, I will pay on their behalf, but this must be done!!” said Valjibhai.

As of now in Bhimpura we have decided  to plant trees on the banks of the newly deepened lake and the land adjoining the lake.

We are in process of identifying  villages for our tree plantation drive. By June we should have identified the villages and individuals to be assigned the responsibility of caring for the trees. We request you to begin planning in your region too,  before the onset of monsoon. It is  crucial we plant and raise as many trees possible.

ભીમપુરામાં વૃક્ષને પોતાના બાળકની જેમ પ્રેમ કરનાર રૃપસીંહભાઈ મળી ગયા. 

'અમે તમારા ગામમાં ઝાડખાં વાવવાનું આયોજન કરી રહ્યા છીએ. આ ઝાડના ઉછેરની જવાબદારી તમને સોંપવી છે તે તમે કરશો આ કામ?'

'હોવ ચમ નઈ કરુ. ઓના જેવું ઉત્તમ કોમ એકેય નહીં. અન મન આ ઝાડખાંએ ઘણો લાભ કરી આલ્યો હ્. તમ તમાર કરીશ કોમ.'

ચોમાસુ શરૃ થતા પહેલાં ક્યા ગામોમાં વૃક્ષારોપણનું કામ કરવું એનું આયોજન કરી રહ્યા છીએ. ઘણા ગામોએ અમારા ગામમાં પણ વૃક્ષો વાવવાનું કરોની વાત કરી. પણ અમારી શરત પ્રમાણે ગામ પોતે ફાળો આપે ઉપરાંત ઝાડને પાણી આપવાની જવાબદારી સ્વીકારે તે ગામમાં આ કામ કરીશું.

ભીમપુરામાં ખુમાભાઈ અને ગામના અન્ય આગેવાનો સાથે બેઠક થઈ તેમણે કહ્યું દર મહિને ઘર દીઠ વીસ રૃપિયા ફાળો અમે આપીશું. સાથે ઝાડને પાણી આપવાની જવાબદારી પણ અમારી.

આ ફાળો ઝાડના જતન માટે રાખેલા માણસના પગાર પેટે જશે. જરૃર પડે સંસ્થા પણ પગાર આપવામાં પોતાનું ભંડોળ વાપરશે પણ ગામ સહયોગ કરે તો જ સંસ્થા સહયોગ કરશે. એ શરત ભીમપુરાવાસીઓએ માન્ય રાખી છે.

રૃપસીંહભાઈને આ કામની જવાબદારી સોંપવાનું પણ ખુમાભાઈ જેવા આગેવાનોએ જ નક્કી કર્યું. ગામના વાલજીભાઈએ તો કહ્યું કે, ગામના બે પાંચ માણસો ફાળો ના આપે તો હું આપી દઈશ પણ આ કરવા જેવું કામ છે બેન....

હાલ પુરતુ VSSMના પ્રયત્નથી ખોદાયેલા તળાવની પાળ અને તળાવની બાજુના ચરામાં ઝાડ વાવવાનું આયોજન કર્યું છે..

વૃક્ષારોપણ માટે ગામોની પસંદગી થઈ રહી છે....

જુન શરૃ થતા પહેલાં બધી શરતો સાથે ગામો અને ઝાડને બાળકની જેમ ઉછેરવાની, ઝાડ પ્રત્યે મમતા દાખવાનાર માણસોની પણ પસંદગી થઈ જશે.. 

તમે પણ તમારા વિસ્તારમાં આયોજન કરો... વરસાદ આવે તે પહેલાં 

આ આયોજન થાય તે જરૃરી....
