Then how do you survive ?

"Neighbours out of kindness & sympathy come & give food."

What did you eat now ?

"I have some wheat flour, just enough for one meal, which I will cook in the evening."

From this conversation, I could sense the condition of the family. I did not ask any more questions because it would make them sad.

 This is the condition of Valuma  from the village Machiyala in Amreli District. She had two sons. One got married and had 3 children. His wife expired when the youngest daughter was only 2 years old. Valuma took care of all the 3 kids & brought them up. Then the son also expired in 2021. He was the earning member of the family The second son renounced the world & became a Sadhu. Sadhu took care of the family. There was sorrow in the family but it seemed that it would be possible to survive. Then the other son also expired. 

This was just too much for Valuma & she broke down. She was old and had developed a big tumour in the throat. When we asked her about this , she said there is pain but she does not have the money to go to the hospital. She was also concerned that in case the diagnosis is serious who will take care of the kids she was now single handedly taking care of.

When we asked her how we can help her, she replied that she doesn't like to ask for help. She added that whatever we felt at heart was right we can do.

Seeing us the neighbour said that the whole family of Valuma is in trouble because there is heavy leakage in the whole house. The neighbour requested that along with repairing the house if we can even build a toilet inside it would be a big relief to Valuma & family.

We decided to repair the house along with giving the food kit. 

Smt. Poonam Gohel from Maharashtra and Namrata Rathod from UK agreed to bear the entire cost of repairs.

For a food kit you all can also help.

When we left Valuma's house we saw in the surroundings several concrete houses.If all staying in these buildings would have wished, it would have been easily possible to help Valuma. 

Like our Malabhai & Parthibhai said, it is not in everyone's destiny to help the needy. We are thankful to our well-wishers for helping in this noble work.

We are also thankful to Kanubhai who was instrumental in taking us to Valuma. We were happy to see Valuma's neighbour helping in the best way she could.

Our associate Rameshbhai will now take care of Valuma. We will try to get funds from the government under the guardian scheme. We will also help in getting the "antyodaya" card.

'અત્યારે શું જમ્યા?'

'એક ટંક ચાલે એટલો લોટ સે તે હાંજેકના રાંધશું!'

આટલી વાતથી પરિવારની દશા સમજાઈ ગઈ. એમને વધુ પુછીશું તો દુઃખ પહોંચશે એમ માની આગળ પુછવાનું ટાળ્યું. 

અમરેલીના માચીયાળાના વલુમા. એમને બે દિકરા હતા. એમાંના એકને પરણાવ્યો. એને ત્રણ બાળકો થયા ને એમની ઘરવાળી ગુજરી ગઈ. એ વખતે સૌથી નાનો દિકરો તો બે જ વર્ષનો. વલુમાએ જ આ ત્રણેયને ઉછેર્યા. બીજો દિકરો ભગત થઈ ગ્યો. ત્રણ સંતાનોના પિતા 2021માં ગુજરી ગયા. ઘરમાં કમાનાર મુખ્ય વ્યક્તિ જતો રહ્યો. ભગતની જેમ રહેતા દીકરાએ ઘરની જવાબદારી સંભાળી.. દુઃખ હતું પણ જીવી જવાશે એમ લાગતું હતું. ત્યાં વલુમાનો ભગત દિકરો પણ ગુજરી ગયો.

વલુમા હવે ભાંગી પડ્યા. એમની ઉંમર ઘણી. ગળામાં મોટી ગાંઠ હતી. અમે પુછ્યું. 'બા શું થયું છે?'

જવાબમાં એમણે કહ્યું, 'એ પીડા થયા કરે પણ દવાખાને બતાવવાના પૈસા ક્યાં? અને બતાવી દઉં ને કાંક ભારે નીકળે તો પછી આ છોકરાંઓનું કોણ?'

અમે શું મદદ કરીએ એવું પુછ્યું તો કહે, 'મને માંગવું નથ ગમતું. તમને હૈયે બેહે ઈ કરો.'

અમને જોઈને પડોશમાં રહેતા એક બહેન અમારી પાસે આવ્યા ને એમણે કહ્યું, ચોમાસામાં આખો પરિવાર બહુ હેરાન થાય. ઘરમાં બધેથી પાણી પડે. જો ઘર રીપેર ને સાથે ટોયલેટ બાથરૃમ જેવું થઈ જાય તો એમને સાતા થઈ જાય.

રાશનની કીટ આપવાની સાથે ઘર રીપેરીંગનું કામ કરવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું.

રાશન માટે તમે સૌ પણ મદદ કરી શકો.. 

વલુમાને મળીને અમે નીકળી રહ્યા હતા ત્યારે જોયું તો વલુમા જ્યાં રહેતા તેમના ઝૂંપડાં આસપાસ ઘણા મજબૂત અને મોટા મકાનો બાંધેલા હતા. આ દરેક ઘરના વ્યક્તિએ ઈચ્છ્યું હોત તો વલુમાનું ઘર સરખુ કરવાનું આરામથી થઈ શક્યું હોત.

ખેર અમારા માલાભાઈ કે પરથીભાઈ કહે એમ, સદકાર્યોમાં નિમિત્ત બનવાનું સુખ બધાના નસીબમાં નથી હોતું... અલીમભાઈ એમાં નિમિત્ત બન્યા એ માટે આભાર.

વલુમા સુધી અમને કનુભાઈ લઈ ગયા. એમનો પણ આભાર. ને વલુમાના પડોશમાં રહેતા બહેન એમનાથી થતું કરે એ જોઈને રાજી થવાયું.

અમારા કાર્યકર રમેશભાઈ હવેથી વલુમાનું ધ્યાન રાખશે... બાળકોને પાલક માતા પિતા યોજના અંતર્ગત સહાય મળે તે માટે પણ કોશીશ કરીશું. સાથે અંત્યોદય રાશનકાર્ડ મળે તેમ પણ કરીશું.

"I love you , that's why "

Who would not like to hear these words?. I also liked it when 80 year old Nanduma said this to me. From the village of  Sapar in Amreli, a very content Nanduma has no desire to acquire anything more. Stays alone and spends most of her time in the service of the temple.

Our associate Shri Rameshbhai arranges to send her our food kit every month. Nanduma had a lot of affection for Rameshbhai & when he fell ill, Nanduma asked her neighbour to take her to Rameshbhai's home to check on his health.

It was Nanduma's wish to meet us all in Ahmedabad who worried about her and took care of her. Whenever Rameshbhai went to give her the food kit, she would enquire about me. It made me visit her and after meeting her got a fresh energy. She had no complaints with her life and her condition.  She believed that as long as she was fit, she could work and take care of herself, now that she has become old god has sent us to help her. Then why should she worry?

Like Nanduma, we cater to the needs of such 600 old people. You too can be a guardian to such deserving old parents. We get requests for help from so many such dependents. આ શબ્દો સાંભળીને મજા પડે ને? મને પણ એંસી વર્ષીય નંદુમાના શબ્દો સાંભળી મજા પડી.. અમરેલીના સાપરના નંદુમા એકદમ સંતોષી. વધારાનું મેળવી લેવાની કોઈ ઝંખના નહીં. એકલા રહે અને પોતાનો ઘણો ખરો સમય મંદિરમાં સેવા આપવામાં પસાર કરે.

અમારા કાર્યકર રમેશભાઈ એમને દર મહિને રાશન પહોંચાડે. તે રમેશભાઈ પર એમને ઘણું હેત. રમેશભાઈ બિમાર પડ્યાની ખબર પડે કે ખબર પુછવા લઈ જવાનું પડોશીને એ કહે..

નંદુમાની ભાવના અમદાવાદમાં બેસીને એમની ચિંતા કરનાર અમને સૌને મળવાની. જ્યારે પણ રમેશભાઈ રાશન આપવા જાય ત્યારે પુછે, બેન ક્યારે આવશે..એટલ જ એમને મળવા ખાસ ગયા ને એમને મળ્યા પછી એક ઊર્જા આવી ગઈ.

પોતાના જીવન સામે કોઈ ફરિયાદ નહીં. નોંધારી હતી પણ ભગવાને થતું ત્યાં સુધી કામ કરાવ્યું ને હાથપગ ભાંગ્યા ત્યારે તમને મોકલી આપ્યા.. પછી મારે શું ચિંતા એવું એ કહે.

ઈશ્વર પર એમને ગજબ શ્રદ્ધા...

 Manharba stays in Varsoda  in Manas in Gandhinagar

Her husband had expired a long time ago. Even the son  expired some years ago. Manharba used to work as a cook in someone's house which helped her to take care of herself. But with age advancing she had to give up the work. Manharba stays in Varsoda and has her own house. However, her house is in totally dilapidated condition.  She now stays in a rented house. She gets pension for senior citizens from which she pays the house rent & power bills. We came to know about Manharba from a local village person Ashwinbhai Raval who informed our colleague

We met her recently and she requested us to help repair her house so she can save a monthly rent of Rs 500/-. Over & above that she will have the happiness of staying in her own house & there will be no ear of anyone asking her to vacate the house.

Manharba has on so many occasions thanked us for the ration that we give her  When we went to see her dilapidated house she told us something very nice.

" Karna was a benevolent person. He us to donate gold . After death he went to heaven.  When he was hungry he was given gold biscuits to eat. When Karna asked why Gold biscuits. He was told that he will get what he donated. Donating food is the best donation one can do. From your ration, I am able to quench my hunger. My soul bless you every day"

We are able to do this noble task of helping at least 600 dependent aged grand parents primarily because of so many donors & well wishers who contribute generously towards this cause. The blessings of Manharba is to all who help us in this cause.

To repair the house, Shri Kishorebhai helped us. In memory of Kushbhai we named it Kush Home 2. Thank you Kishorebhai.

મનહરબા ગાંધીનગરના માણસના વરસોડાગામમાં રહે.

પતિને ગુજરી ગયે ઘણો વખત થયો. એક દીકરો હતો એ પણ ગુજરી ગયો. બા ગાંધીનગરમાં કોઈના ઘરે રહીને રસોઈ કરતા એટલે નિભાવ થઈ જતો. પણ હવે ઉંમર થતા એ કામ છુટ્યું. 

બા હવે વરસોડામાં રહે. એમનું પોતાનું ઘર છે. પણ એ ઘર જર્જરીત થઈ ગયું છે. આથી એ ભાડાના ઘરમાં એ રહે.

વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન મળે એમાંથી એ ઘરનું ભાડુ ભરે ને બાકી બચે એમાંથી લાઈટબીલ ને અન્ય ખર્ચ કરે. 

મનહરબાની સ્થિતિ વિષે ગામના અશ્વિનભાઈ રાવળે અમારા કાર્યકર રીઝવાનભાઈને વાત કરી. અમે માવજત કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત એમને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. બાને ગામના એક જૈન પરિવાર તરફથી એક ટંક ટીફીન મળે અને અમે રાશન આપીયે આમ ખાવા પીવાનું થઈ જાય.

અમે હમણાં એમને મળ્યા ત્યારે એમણે કહ્યું, 'આ ભાડાના ઘરની જગ્યાએ મારુ પોતાનું ઘર જો રીપેર થઈ જાય તો મારા મહિનાના 500 રૃપિયા બચી જાય. પાછુ પોતાના ઘરનું સુખ જુદુ. કોઈ ખાલી કરાવશેની બીક પણ ન રહે.'

મનહર બાને રાશન આપીયે તે માટે એમણે કોણ જાણે કેટલીયે વખત આભાર વ્યક્ત કર્યો. એમનું જર્જરીત ઘર જોવા ગયા ત્યારે એમણે એક સરસ વાત કરી,

'કર્ણ દાનવીર કહેવાયો. એ સોનાનું દાન કરતો. મૃત્યુ પછી સ્વર્ગમાં ગયો. એને ભૂખ લાગી. જમવામાં એને સોનાના બીસ્કીટ આપ્યા. કારણ પુછ્યું તો કહ્યું, તે જેનું દાન કર્યું હોય એ તને મળે!' આ વાત કરીને બા હસ્યા અને કહ્યું, 'અન્નદાન મહાદાન કહેવાય. તમે રાશન આપો એનાથી મારુ પેટ ભરાય, મારો આત્મા રોજ તમને આશિર્વાદ આપે.'

આમ જુઓ તો અમે નિમિત્ત. VSSM સાથે સંકળાયેલા કેટલા બધા સ્વજનો અમને મદદ કરે ત્યારે અમે મનહર બા જેવા 600 નિરાધાર બા દાદાઓને રાશન આપી શકીએ.

“Have you shared such a strong bond from the very beginning?”

“Yes, I think we were destined to live like sisters. Our husband passed away some time back; he was a little older than me, and so is she. My husband was not keeping good health; it was when I decided to work as a cook and domestic helper at a doctor’s house in Baroda. So I took up the responsibility of earning for the three of us and kept sending the money to my husband and step-wife!”

Manjula Ba’s talk did come as a surprise. She lost her husband to a long illness; his first wife is Savitriben, while Manjulaben is his second wife,  who also runs the household.

The yearning for a child made Kaka marry twice, but that aspiration was never fulfilled. Kaka operated a grocery store in Navsari, but as age and frail health caught up, he closed the business. The savings were exhausted on his age-related medical issues. Ultimately, they returned to  Chunel,  his native village in Kheda district. Kaka has left both of them a small house. However, both of them are incapable of working hence bringing food on the plate is a problem. The duo tries to survive on the quota available on their ration card and pension for older people, but money for medicine, etc., remains a challenge.

“I always prayed to Goddess Jagdamba to keep us under her wings. It was as if she answered my prayers and sent us to help through VSSM’s Rajnibhai. God bless Chunel’s Dilipbhai for talking about us to Rajnibhai, who now brings us a monthly ration kit.”

The Mavjat initiative helps 435 destitute elderly with food; the support we receive from our well-wishers helps us operate this much-needed initiative. You may also choose to adopt an elderly by offering financial contributions.

'તમારા બેઉ વચ્ચે પહેલેથી આવો મેળ?'

'હા. બધુ ઉપરવાળો નક્કી કરે. અમે તો બહેનોની જેમ રહીએ. અમારા ઘરવાળા હમણાં ગુજરી ગયા પણ એ બેઉ મારા કરતા થોડા મોટા. એમની તબીયત સારી નહોતી રહેતી ત્યારે હું વડોદરા એક ડોક્ટરના ત્યાં રસોઈ અને ઘરનું કામ કરવા રહી અને ત્યાંથી બેઉને પૈસા મોકલાવતી અને એમનું ગુજરાન ચાલતુ.'

નવાઈ લાગે એવી વાત મંજુલાબાએ કરી. તેમના પતિ લાંબી માંદગીમાં ગયા. એમના પહેલા પત્ની સાવિત્રીબહેન અને બીજા મંજુલાબા. 

ઘરનો કારભાર મંજુલાબા જ જુએ. ને સાવીત્રીબા એમનું બધુ માને. બાળક માટે થઈને કાકાએ બે લગ્ન કરેલા. પણ બાળક ભાગ્યમાં નહોતું.

કાકા નવસારીમાં નાનકડી દુકાન ચલાવતા. ઉંમર થઈ ધંધો બંધ થયો. માંદગીમાં ઘણો ખર્ચ થઈ ગયો. છેવટે હાથે પગે આવી ગયા. એટલે નવસારી મુકી પોતાના વતન ખેડાના ચુણેલગામમાં આવીને રહ્યા.

એક નાનકડુ ઘર બેઉ બા માટે કાકા મુકીને ગયા તે બેઉને માથુ ઘાલવાનું હખ છે. પણ કામ થતું નથી એટલે ખાવા પીવાની તકલીફ પડતી. 

રાશનકાર્ડ પર મળતા રાશન અને વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન પર આ બે નભવા કોશીશ કરે. પણ દવાઓને અન્ય જરૃરિયાતો તો ઊભી રહેતી. 

મંજુલાબા કહે, 'મા જગદંબાને રોજ પ્રાર્થના કરતી કે નોંધારા ના મુકતી. તે જાણે ભગવાને પ્રાર્થના સાંભળી હોય એમ ચુણેલના દિલીપભાઈએ રજનીભાઈ (VSSM ના કાર્યકર)ને વાત કરી અને એમણે સ્થિતિ જોઈ અમને દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું જેનાથી અમને ઘણી રાહત છે.'

VSSM થકી અને આપ સૌ સ્વજનોની મદદથી દર મહિને 435 નિરાધાર બા દાદાઓને રાશન આપવાનું ્અમે કરીએ.

"I did not have to spend a single penny for the election. I have worked a lot for the poor people of my village; hence the village elected me as their Sarpanch. Once again!"

Shri Kumbhabhai, Sarpanch of Delthi village of Banaskantha's Vav block, shared the above. And he was speaking the truth; he played a pivotal role in bringing the benefits of various government schemes to the widow, handicapped, impoverished elderly, and other low-income families in need to support. He took the necessary measures and followed up on each application with the government office.

Rani Maa is a destitute elderly from the village; after Kumbhabhai shared her plight with our team member Bhagwanbhai, we sent a monthly ration kit to her. Along with the widow pension, the ration kit helps provide food security to Rani Maa. Recently, when we were in the village to meet Rani Maa, Kumbhabhai was also present, and Rani Maa showered praises on him and all his excellent work. "It is my duty to work for you all!" Kumbhaji had said.

But isn't it the duty of all Sarpanchs? How many of them try to identify the people in need of support and bring it to the government's notice? And it continues; how many follow-ups until the issue has been resolved?

In fact, my meeting with Kumbhaji reminded me of my visit to a village in Sabarkantha, where I met 18 women, primarily destitute or widowed. All of them are poor, but none receive any welfare support from the government. And no one was keen to ensure these women were linked with government welfare programs. Only one woman, who was not related to any of these Ba but was empathetic towards their condition, made efforts to ensure some benefit reached them. All these older women stayed in mud houses, yet, their income certificates the Panchayat had issued were all above Rs. 1.20 lacs. On the other hand, Sarpanch, like Kumbhaji, makes sure the required is done to bring the government benefits to those who need them the most.

We salute Sarpanch like Kumbhaji and pray that this story inspires other sarpanches to fall in line!

 "ચૂંટણીમાં મારે એક રૃપિયો ખર્ચવો નથી પડ્યો. પણ મારા ગામના ગરીબગરબાની મે ખુબ સેવા કીધી. એટલે ગામે મને ફેર જીતાડ્યો."

બનાસકાંઠાના વાવતાલુકાના દેથળીગામના સરપંચ શ્રી કુંભાભાઈએ આ કહ્યું. એમની વાત પણ સાચી હતી. ગામમાં રહેતા વિધવા બહેનો, વૃદ્ધ નિરાધાર અને વિકલાાંગ વ્યક્તિઓ આ બધાને સરકાર દ્વારા જે સહાય મળે તે સહાય અપાવવામાં એમની ભૂમિકા મહત્વની. અલબત એમણે એ માટે ઘણી દોડાદોડી કરી. 

ગામમાં રહેતા નિરાધાર રાણીમાને VSSM માંથી રાશનકીટ મળે તે માટે તેમણે અમારા કાર્યકર ભગવાનભાઈને કહેલું ને અમે રાણીમાને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. મૂળ સરકારી પેન્શન સાથે અમારી કીટ રાણી મા માટે મોટા ટેકા જેવી. અમે રાણીમાને મળવા ગયા ત્યારે કુંભાજી પણ ત્યાં હાજર. રાણીમાએ એમના ભરપૂર વખાણ કર્યા. કુંભાજીએ કહ્યું, મારી ફરજ છે ને મારે કરવાનું હોય. 

પણ ફરજ તો દરેક ગામના ઘણી - સરપંચની પણ કેટલા સરપંચ ગામમાં રહેતા સાચા જરૃરિયાતમંદને શોધી તેમની તકલીફોની વાત સરકારી સુધી પહોંચાડે? વળી પહોંચાડવું જ પુરતુ નથી પહોંચાડ્યા પછી સમાધાન પણ શોધી કાઢે. 

સાચુ કહુ તો કુંભાજીને મળ્યા પછી હમણાં સાબરકાંઠાના એક ગામમાં ગયેલી તે ગામ યાદ આવ્યું. જ્યાં એક સાથે લગભગ અઢાર બાઓને હું મળેલી જેમાંના ઘણા નિરાધાર હતા, ઘણા વિધવા હતા. આર્થિક સ્થિતિ નબળી પણ તેમને સરકારની સહાય મળતી નહોતી. ગામના કોઈને એમને સહાય મળે તેમાં રસ નહોતો. એક બહેન જેમને આ બધા બા સાથે કોઈ નાતો નહીં પણ માનવતાના ધોરણે એ પ્રયત્નો કર્યા કરે. પણ આ બધા બા કાચા ઘરોમાં રહે. છતાં આ બાઓમાંથી કેટલાકને તો આવકના દાખલાય 1.20 લાખથી વધુની આવકના પંચાયતે કાઢી આપેલા. ત્યારે કુંભાજી તો સામે ચાલીને કોઈ બાકી રહી ન જાય તેનો ખ્યાલ રાખે. આવા સરપંચને સલામ કરવાનું મન થાય.. 

બાકી કુંભાજી જેવા સરપંચોને સલામ ને જેઓ હજુ આ ભૂમિકામાં નથી આવ્યા તેમને ભગવાન સદબુદ્ધી આપે તેવી પ્રાર્થના...

Mittal Patel meets Sarojben in Piludra village

Life has been challenging for Sarojben from Sabarkantha’s Piludra; her hardships make her look quite old compared to her actual age. Having lost her husband at a very young age, the responsibility of raising Rupal, her daughter, fell upon her. Sarojben works as a farm labor to earn a living and educate Rupal, who is studying in 9th grade.

Since the last few years, Sarojben has lost her vision, and because of financial constraints, she has avoided going for a medical checkup. 

The responsibility of running the household, looking after Sarojben, and earing for the two fell on Rupal. Initially, she would take leave but eventually dropped out of the school

Pilundra’s Alpaben introduced us to Sarojben and suggested we provide them with the monthly ration kit.

Sarojben should also receive a widow pension; strangely, this daily wage earning lady received an income certificate above Rs. 1.20 lacs; hence she could not qualify for the widow pension.

We have begun sending ration kits to Sarojben. Very soon, we shall take her to the doctor to examine her eye, and if her vision returns, we will bring Rupal to our hostel.

સાબરકાંઠાના પિલુદ્રામાં રહેતા સરોજબેનની ઉંમર બહુ મોટી નહીં પણ વર્ષોથી ઢસરડા કરવાના લીધે એ નાની ઉંમરેય મોટા લાગે. એમને એક દિકરી રૃપલ જે હાલ નવમુ ધોરણ ભણે. સરોજબેનના પતિ થોડા વર્ષો પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયા. સરોજબહેન ખેતમજૂરી કરે અને મા-દીકરીનું ગુજરાન ચાલે. 

પણ છેલ્લા કેટલાક વખતથી સરોજબેનને આંખે દેખાતુ બંધ થયું. આર્થિક સ્થિતિ નબળી એટલે આંખોની તપાસ કરાવવાનું પણ એમણે કર્યું નહીં.

 રૃપલ ભણે પણ માના આંખોના અજવાળા ઓલવાયા પછી ઘર ચલાવવા એણે કામે જવું પડે. જરૃર પડે માને પણ મદદરૃપ થવું પડે આમ નિશાળમાં રજાઓ પડવા માંડી. આખરે એણે ભણવાનું જ મુકી દીધું.

 આ સરોજબેનનો પરિચય અમને ગામમાં રહેતા અલપાબહેને કરાવ્યો. એમણે કહ્યું, આ પરિવારને દર મહિને રાશન આપો તો એમને ઘણો ટેકો થાય. 

વિધવા સહાય સરોજબેનને મળવી જોઈએ પણ એ પણ મળે નહીં. મજૂરી કરીને નભતા આ પરિવારને આવકનો દાખલો 1.20 લાખની આવકનો વાર્ષિક મળ્યો એટલે વિધવા સહાય ન મળે. 

સ્થિતિ સમજી અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. સરોજબેનની આંખોની તપાસ કરાવવાનું પણ કરીશું. જો આંખો સાજી થાય તો રૃપલને અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા લઈ આવીશું. પણ આવા પરિવારોને મદદ કરી શકીએ છીએ એનો રાજીપો છે..અલપાબહેન અને અમારા કાર્યકર તોહીદનો આભાર. એમણે સરોજબહેનને શોધ્યા.

“This old man doesn’t allow me to be away from his sight! If you give me a paddle rickshaw, I can make him sit in the rickshaw, take him along and do some work to earn a living!”

“Will you be able to ride a paddle rickshaw?”

“I know how to ride it; I used to ride it before!”

“If we give you a paddle rickshaw and you begin to earn a living, we will have to stop providing you with the monthly ration kit!”

“That is fine. As such, we do not prefer living on charity. So you can stop giving the ration kit, but please give me a paddle rickshaw.”

Shardaba preferred working to earn a living rather than eating food given as charity, and the person who wasn’t allowing her to remain away for long was her husband Chagankaka.

Chagankaka is 15 years older to Shardaba. While Ba is able and can fend for herself, Kaka cannot walk. Hence he doesn’t allow his wife to leave the house. So Shardaba is left with no choice but to remain in the home and rely on the mercy of neighbours, which she does not like. When VSSM’s Rizwan learned about the condition of this couple, he first counselled Kaka to allow Shardaba to step out and work. However, since that did not work, he recommended providing a ration kit to them.

For the last few months, we have been providing a monthly ration kit to this couple; recently, when I met them in person, Shardaba requested a paddle rickshaw. We are happy to support individuals who love to work and fend for themselves. Therefore, we shall provide Shardaba with the rickshaw she has requested and some goods for her to sell and earn. And when the time comes that she cannot work, we will resume sending ration kits to this destitute couple because we know they will require some external support to survive.

'આ ડોહો મન સોડતો નહીં.. બે ઘડી આઘી નથી થવા દેતો..  પણ તમે મન પેડલ રીક્ષા આલો તો મુ ડોહાન પેડલમો બેહાડીન નેનો મોટો કોક ધંધો ચાલુ કરી દઉં.'

'પણ પેડલ ચલાવવાનું તમે કરી શકશો?'

'મન પેડલ આવડ. મુ પેલાં ચલાવતી. '

'પણ પેડલ આપીશું ને તમે ધંધો કરતા થઈ જશો પછી અમે હાલ રાશનકીટ આપીયે તે બંધ કરી દઈશું.'

'કોય વોધો નહીં.. મફતનું તો ઓમેય ના સૂટકે ખવાય.. તમ તમાર અનાજ આલવાનું બંધ કરજો પણ સાયકલ આલો..'

ધર્માદાનું ખાવાની ના પાડતા હતા તે શારદાબા ને એમને આધા થવા નહોતા દેતા એ એમના પતિદેવ છગનાકાકા..

કાકાની ઉંમર શારદાબા કરતા લગભગ પંદર વર્ષ વધારે. કાકા ચાલીને ક્યાંય જઈ શકતા નહોતા. જ્યારે શારદાબા થોડું થોડું કામ કરી શકે. પણ છગનકાકા એમને છોડે નહીં. ના છુટકે શારદાબા છાપરાંમાં કાકાની પાસે બેસી રહે. આડોશ પાડોશના લોકો આપે એ ખાય. પણ એમને એ ગમે નહીં.  

અમારા કાર્યકર રીઝવાનને સ્થિતિનો ખ્યાલ આવતા અમે રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. કાકાને શારદાબાને કામે જવા દેવા અમારા રીઝવાને સમજાવી જોવા કોશીશ કરી પણ એમાં કાંઈ વળ્યું નહીં. 

છેલ્લા કેટલાક મહિનાથી અમે આ બા -દાદાને રાશનકીટ આપતા પણ રૃબરૃ મળવા ગઈ ત્યારે એમણે સામેથી પેડલ રીક્ષા માંગી..

જાતે મહેનતથી રળવા માંગે એને મદદ કરવી ગમે જ. બસ શારદાબાને પેડલ ને પેડલમાં ભરાવવાનો થોડો સામાનેય આપીશું જેથી એમનું ગાડુ ગબડે. જે દિવસે એમનાથી કામ નહીં થાય ત્યારે ફરીથી રાશન પણ આપીશું. મૂળ આ બેય માવતર છે પાછા નિસંતાન અને નોંધારા... 

પણ આવા 420 માવતરોને અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપીયે.. તમે પણ એમના પાલક બની શકો એ માટે 9099936013 પર સંપર્ક કરવા વિનંતી.

VSSM provides ration kit to hundreds of such needy elderly
who are unable to work and feed for themselves

For an elder, either their daughter or son can be a caregiver. However, not all are lucky. Innumerable couples have no one to care for as they age, compelling them to continue working until the body has the strength to keep going. Life becomes a burden for such people who have no choice but to eagerly await their final journey.

And death, as we all know, arrives at its own will.

Many do not get the benefit of the elderly pension. Similarly,  the ration from PDS also remains a distant possibility as many need help to even walk up to the store.

"During such times, we just fill our hungry belly with a glass of water, if the neighbors are caring enough, they might come and give us leftovers," shares Dudhima of Rajkot's Tramba village.

VSSM comes across hundreds of such needy elderly who are unable to work and fend for themselves. So it began providing ration kits or tiffin (to those who are incapable of cooking) to these elderlies in need of help. Within a couple of years, the number of elders we support has grown to 420. Each monthly ration kit costs Rs. 1400; while our donors have adopted many elders, the growing number of elders has us on a continuous lookout for new sponsors.

We also receive calls from numerous such elders in need from across Gujarat; while we can only reach some of them, we are trying our best to attend as many as possible.

ઘડપણની લાઠી...એ દીકરો કે દીકરી કોણ પણ હોઈ શકે.. પણ આવી લાઠી ન ધરાવતા કેટલાય મા-બાપ આ દુનિયામાં. કામ થાય ત્યાં સુધી કરે રાખે.. પણ પછી તો જીવતરનોય એમને ભાર લાગે. પરાણે ઘડપણ કાઢવાનું. ભગવાન આવીને ઝટ લઈ જાય એની લગભગ બધા કાગડોળે વાટ જુએ..

પણ મોત એમ શાનું આવે?

સરકારી પેન્શન કેટલાક ને મળે ને કેટલાકને ન મળે.. રાશનનું પણ એવું. ઘણા તો ચાલીને દુકાન સુધી ન પહોંચી શકે... એટલે રાશનેય ન મળે.. 

રાજકોટના ત્રાંબાના દૂધીમાં કહે એમ આવા ટાણે પાણી પીને પડ્યા રહેવાનું...

ક્યારેક આડોશી પાડોશીને દયા આવે તો વધેલું આપી જાય. ને ક્યારેક કશુંયે નહીં..

બસ આવા નિરાધાર માવતરો અમારા ધ્યાને આવ્યા જેમની કામ કરવાની ક્ષમતા નથી..

આવા માવતરોને ભૂખ્યા સુવુ ન પડે એ માટે રાશન આપવાનું ક્યાંક ટીફીન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. હાલ ગુજરાતના વિવિધ ઠેકાણે વસતા 420 માવતરોને અમે રાશન આપીયે..

એક માવતરની કીટનો ખર્ચ 1400 રૃપિયા થાય. ઘણા માવતરોના પાલક અમને મળી ગયા છે ને ઘણાના અમે શોધીએ..

વળી ગુજરાતના ઠેકઠેકાણેથી ઘણા આવા નિરાધાર માવતરો ફોન થકી પોતાની યાતના પણ કહે...શું કહુ બધે પહોંચવું પણ મુશ્કેલ.. પણ ખેર થાય તે કરીએ..

તમે સૌ આ કાર્યમાં ટેકો કરી શકો. એક માવતરને માસીક રાશન આપવા તેમના પાલક બની શકો.. એ માટે 90999- 36013 પર 10 થી 6માં સંપર્ક કરી શકો..

“Saheb, I have heard government gives aid to needy individuals. I am destitute and have been staying in Vav for years, but I have received nothing. My neighbors take care of me, I cannot live without tea, and I have no money to buy tea. If I can get some money, I can at least have a cup of tea!”

This very humble Ba did not hold back from sharing her concerns before a government official. It was first time I had witnessed someone requesting government aid for tea. The atmosphere in the office became jovial on hearing this unique request from Ba. The officer in charge is also a very kind-hearted gentleman.

“We will make sure you begin to receive the pension,”  the officer ensured with a smile. “But in the meantime, take this, and if you run short, please come and take more from me until I am here!” he tells Ba while handing her Rs 1000 from his wallet.

The above episode occurred in Block Development Officer Shri Jay Goswami’s office in Banaskantha’s Vav. The communities who visit his office know him as a. very empathetic officer; hence, they feel a sense of right on him. 

I travel a lot across these villages and interact with the communities. People don’t like officials who act as Sahebs, but prefer to open up and share their heartfelt concerns with officers who blend with them easily. A proper leader/officer can identify the pulse of the people and become one of them.

Jaybhai is one of those rare officials who also makes a regular donation to VSSM.

Jaybhai made sure  Ba’s form for elderly pension was filled and called up VSSM’s Naranbhai to recommend sending a monthly ration kit to Ba under our Mavjat initiative. Incidentally, we were in the region then, so upon his invitation to see Ba in person, we reached his office.

Ba was feeling immensely grateful for the administrative promptness in resolving her issues. Jaybhai also offered Ba a chair, but she kept her distance.

It is always a pleasure to meet such officials; we wish our ear we want to Jaybhai all the very best, and may his good deeds and compassion take him to great heights.

"સાહેબ સરકાર ઘરડા માવીતરોન પૈસા આલ્.. પણ મન તો કોય મલતુ નહીં. મુ નિરાધાર સુ. ઓય વાવમાં વરસોથી રહુ. અતાર લગી હેડે જતું. મોણસો હાસવય ખરા પણ મન ચા વના નહીં ચાલતું, પણ ચા પીવા પૈસા નહીં. મન સા(સહાય) મલ તો ચા - બા પી હકુ..."

માજી શબ્દોની જરાય ચોરી વગર મનમાં જે હતું એ એક અધિકારી આગળ કહી રહ્યા હતા. વળી ચા માટે સરકારી સહાય માંગવા આવ્યા હોય એવો કિસ્સો મેય પહેલીવાર જોયો.. જરા રમૂજ પડે એવું હતું પણ પેટછુટી વાત એ જે અધિકારીને કહી રહ્યા હતા એ છે પાછા એકદમ ઋજુ હૃદયના.

અધિકારીએ વાત સાંભળી મર્માળુ હસતા કહ્યું. "તમને પેન્શન મળે એવું તો કરી જ દઉશું માડી. પણ આ લ્યો" એમ કહીને એમણે એમના પોકેટમાંથી હજાર કાઢીને બાને ચા માટે આપ્યા. ને પાછુ કહી દીધું, "ખુટે તો હું જ્યાં હુદી અહીંયા છુ ન્યાં લગી મારી પાસેથી લઈ જવા.."

વાત છે બનાસકાંઠાના વાવની.. તાલુકા વિકાસ અધિકારી તરીકે જય ગોસ્વામી ત્યાં ફરજ બજાવે.. એકદમ લાગણીવાળા વ્યક્તિ.. એટલે જ કચેરીમાં આમ પોતાની મૂંઝવણ સાથે થોડા હકપૂર્વક લોકો આવી શકે. 

હું ગામોમાં ખુબ ફરુ.. લોકો સાથે વાતો ઘણી થાય. દરેક વ્યક્તિને અધિકારી કે નેતા પોતાના જેવા એમનામાં ભળી જાય એવા ગમે.. પેલા સાહેબ થઈને આવે એ એમને બહુ રૃચતા નથી.. પ્રજાની નાડી પારખી પ્રજાની વચ્ચે એમનામય થઈ જાય એ સાચ્ચો અધિકારી કે નેતા..

જયભાઈ તો અમને નિયમીત નાનુ મોટુ અનુદાન પણ મોકલે.. આવા અધિકારી બહુ જુજ...

આ માડી કચેરીમાં આવ્યા એમણે વૃદ્ધ પેન્શનનું ફોર્મ તો ભરાવ્યું. સાથે અમારા એ વિસ્તારના કાર્યકર નારણભાઈને ફોન કરીને. આ બાને તમે તમારા માવજત કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત દર મહિને રાશકીટ આપો તો એમને સારુ રહે એવું કહેતા ફોન પણ કર્યો. યોગાનુયોગ એ વખતે એમના જ વિસ્તારમાં જ અમે ફરી રહ્યા હતા. એમણે બાને રૃબરૃ મળવા નિમંત્રણ આપ્યું ને અમે કચેરીએ પહોંચ્યા.

બા તો આવું ચપટીમાં કામ થાય એ વાતથી જ ધન્યતા અનુભવતા હતા. જયભાઈએ આગ્રહ કર્યો કે માડી ખુરશીમાં બેસો પણ એમણે એક જુદો મલાજો રાખ્યો...

આવા અધિકારીઓને જોઈને રાજી થવાય... પ્રિય જયભાઈ કુદરત તમારા હસ્તે ઘણા શુભકાર્યો કરાવે ને પ્રજાલક્ષી કાર્યોમાં તમે એક ઊંચાઈ પર પહોંચો તેવી શુભભાવના...

The joy of bringing a smile to someone’s face will always remain one of that matchless moments.

Ramila Ba lives in  Kheda’s Bamroli village in a small hut she calls home. Ramila Ba suffers from leprosy, so finding work is a challenge; her son is mentally unstable, so the responsibility of Ramila Ba still needs to worry about bringing food to the plate.

It has been many years since Ramila Ba’s husband passed away, yet she hasn’t received any benefit under the government’s widow pension scheme. Moreover, Ramila Ma has lost her fingers to leprosy, so getting the fingerprints scanned for biometric verification is impossible. As a result, her ration card has also fallen silent.

The pain and anguish individuals like Ramila Ma tackle on a daily basis can be comprehended only by meeting them, yet they have no complaints in life. So VSSM’s Rajnnibhai recommended Ramila Ma for a monthly ration kit so that she doesn’t have to live at the mercy of others.  

The Maavjat initiative has continued to receive your encouragement since its beginning. And the growing support helps us reach individuals like Ramila Ma. Along with the assurance of a meal, the ration kit has brought much-needed cheer into Ramila Ma’s life.

Ramila Ma came to meet me and express her gratitude when I was in Kheda recently. It gets me thinking if it is me they should be thanking!

The wise old Devu Ma once mentioned that the almighty sends the right person to the place they need at the right time. And I believe in her wise words.

VSSM will take the matter of activating the ration card and linking her to a widow pension with the respective authorities. The district collector of Kheda Shir Bachani saheb is compassionate towards the needs of these low-income families.

But for now, the ration kit has brought well-being to Ramila Ma; her toothless grin reveals the joy.

કોઈના મોંઢા પર સ્મીત લાવવામાં નિમિત્ત બનવું એનું સુખ કેટલું મોટુ?આ ફોટોમાં દેખાય એ રમીલાબા. ખેડાના વસૌના બામરોલીમાં કોઈની જગ્યામાં છાપરુ કરીને રહે. 

એમને રક્તપીતની બિમારી. એટલે ખાસ કોઈ કામે ન બોલાવે. દિકરો છે પણ એ માનસીક વિકલાંગ. આવામાં રમીલાબા હખેડખે પોતાનું ગાડુ ગબડાવે. 

એમના પતિ ગુજરે ગયે ઘણો સમય થયો પણ તેમને વિધવા સહાય મળતી નથી. મૂળ તેમનું આધારકાર્ડ નથી નીકળતું અમે એ નીકળે એ માટે કોશીશ કરીએ છીએ પણ તેમના આંગળા રક્તપીતની તકલીફના કારણે ખવાઈ ગયા છે. રાશનકાર્ડ અંગૂઠાની છાપ ન આવવાના કારણે સાયલન્ટ થઈ ગયું છે. સાયલન્ટ કેવો શબ્દ છે નહીં?

કેવી તકલીફમાં લોકો જીવે છે એ જ્યારે આવા સ્નેહીજનોને મળીએ ત્યારે સમજાય છતાંય તેમને ફરિયાદ નથી.. રમીલાબાની સ્થિતિ જોઈને અમારા કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈએ તેમને દર મહિને રાશનકીટ આપવા કહ્યું જેથી તેમને કોઈની ઓશિયાળી ન રહે.

અમારા દેવુ માએ કહેલું એમ, જ્યારે જેની જરૃર પડે ત્યારે કુદરત એને એ જગ્યા પર મોકલી દે. બસ આ વાત મારા ખ્યાલથી સાચી..

રમીલાબાને ઝડપથી વિધવા સહાય ને એમનું રેશનકાર્ડ બોલતું એટલે કે અનાજ આપતુ થઈ જાય એવું એ માટે કલેક્ટર શ્રીને રજૂઆત કરીશું. કલેક્ટર શ્રી બાચાણી સાહેબ ખૂબ ભલા એ કાર્ય પાર પાડશે તેવી આશા છે. 

પણ રમીલાબાને આપણી રાશનકીટથીયે સાતા છે.. તેમના બોખલા મોંઢાનું સ્મીત એ દર્શાવે છે.

Mittal Patel meets Jivi Ma

My life is at peace now; God will bless you with abundance and happiness!”  Jivi Ma showered us with her blessings. A resident of Zainabad of Patdi’s Dasada block, Jivi Ma, lost her young son to a heart attack two years ago. Madhuben, her daughter-in-law, could not take the shock; she lost her mental strength and suffered a stroke. Gradually she lost her ability to speak and remains confined to bed.

“It was better if god had taken me; this pain is unbearable….! But death does not come when asked for!” Jivi Ma reels under constant anguish.

Jivi Ma is a very senior citizen. Although ideally, Madhuben should be her caregiver, instead, at this age, it is Jivi Ma who has to take care of Madhuben.

Jivi Ma has a mentally challenged granddaughter, while the grandson is small. And sustaining all of them is now upon Jivi Ma. It is an everyday battle she fights to provide for the family.

The family lives near Bajaniya settlement, and the neighbors are supportive and help whenever possible, but they, too, survive under tremendous financial stress, so Jivi Ma, too cannot expect much from them.

VSSM began providing a monthly ration kit after we learned about this family. Our Kanubhai and Chayaben bring the kit to this family.

Recently, I had the opportunity to go see them, it seemed Madhuben was trying to convey something, but it was difficult for me to comprehend; her painful condition was difficult to witness. So I prayed for her well-being and that she may find freedom and peace.

 હવે મને ઘણી શાંતી સે બાપા. ભગવાન તમારુ હારુ કરશે. તમારુ અભરેભરાશે.. '

આ આશિર્વાદ સુરેન્દ્રનગરના દશાડાના જૈનાબાદમાં રહેતા જીવીમાંએ આપ્યા. જીવામાંના જુવાન દીકરાને બે વર્ષ પહેલાં હાર્ટ એટેક આવ્યો ને એ ગુજરી ગયો. પણ દીકરાના ગયા પછી તેમની પુત્રવધુ મધુબહેન આ આઘાત સહન ન કરી શક્યા. એ માનસીક રીતે પડી ભાંગ્યા. લકવો થઈ ગયો અને ધીમે ધીમે બોલવાનું પણ બંધ થઈ ગયું. આજે એ પથારીવશ છે. 

જીવી મા કહે, 'આનુ દુઃખ નથી જોવાતું ભગવાન એને લઈ લે તો સારુ...' પણ મોત ક્યાં માંગ્યું મળે?

જીવીમાની ઉંમર ઘણી. પુત્રવધુ તરીકે મધુબહેને એમની ચાકરી કરવી પડે પણ સ્થિતિ એવી નિર્માણ થઈ કે જીવીમાને મધુબહેનની ચાકરી કરવી પડે છે.

જીવીમાને એક પૌત્રી જે માનસીક રીતે વિકલાંગ. ને એક નાનો પૌત્ર.. જીવામા આ બધાનું પુરુ કરવા કોશીશ કરે.. પણ પહોંચી ન શકે. 

એ જ્યાં રહેતે તે બજાણિયા વસાહતના લોકો તેમને મદદ કરે પણ એમની આસપાસમાં રહેતા સૌની સ્થિતિ પણ એક સાંધે ત્યાં તેર તુટે એવી. આમાં કાયમી મદદ કરવી તો મુશ્કેલ.

અમારા ધ્યાને આ પરિવારની સ્થિતિ આવી અમે ત્યાં રાશનકીટ આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. અમારા કનુભાઈ અને છાયાબહેન ત્યાં કીટ પહોંચાડે..

હમણાં આ પરિવારને મળવા ગયા તો મધુબહેન બે હાથ જોડી કશુંક કહેવા માંગતા હોય એવું લાગ્યું. જો કે મને કશું સમજાયું નહીં.

તેમની સ્થિતિ દયનીય છે. 

મધુબહેનના જીવને સાતા આપે અને તેમને ઝટ આ દુનિયામાંથી મુક્તિ આપે તેવી પ્રાર્થના તેમના માથે હાથ મુકીને કરી..

આવા માવતરો કે પરિવારોને અમે દર મહિને રાશનકીટ આપીયે..

Mittal Patel meets Mangu Ma

Mangu Ma resides in Ridrol village in Gandhinagar.

“Welcome, ben!” Mangu Ma called from afar; her thunderous voice astounded me. “Why do we need to give Mangu ma a monthly ration kit?” I had wondered.

But as I reached closer, I. noticed her inability to walk.

“Is there anyone to care for you?” I inquired.

“Ben, I never had children!”

I had nothing more to ask. Mangu Ma receives a widow pension, and we provide her a monthly ration kit. She cannot bend her leg but manages to cook sitting on a chair.

“May God Bless you all; no one shows such compassion these days!”

“There is a supreme power that knows it all; hence it sent us to care for you!” we responded.

She held my hand and showered her affection on me.

“There is a lady who stays behind my house; her fate is worse than mine. I have a house to stay in, but she doesn’t even have that. Can you go see her before leaving?” requested Mangu Ma.

Mangu Ma reflected compassion; she was talking about Dhudi Ma. We had plans to see her, but it felt good when Mangu Ma directed us to help others in need. Usually, there is a sense of envy, and work for the well-being of others is a rarity.

Ridrol’s Kiranbhai volunteers to help us identify elders in need. It was he who led us to Mangu Ma and other elderlies. VSSM’s Rizwan looks after these elders once the connection has been established. He brings them the monthly ration kits.

 'એ આવો બેન..' એવી બૂમ અમારાથી ઘણે છેટે ઊભેલા મંગુમાએ પાડી..એમનો પહાડી અવાજ સાંભળી ઘડીક તો આમને આપણે કેમ અનાજ આપીયે? એ હજુ કામ કરી શકે એમ છે એવું થયું.પણ પછી નજીક પહોંચી ત્યારે ખ્યાલ આવ્યું કે એમનાથી ચલાતુ નથી પગ વળતો નથી. ગાંધીનગરના રિદ્રોલમાં મંગુ મા રહે. મે પુછ્યું, 'તમારુ ધ્યાન રાખે એવું કોઈ?''બેન પેટ મોડ્યું જ નહીં..'હવે વધારે કશું પુછવાનું નહોતું. એમને માસીક પેન્શન મળે ને અમે આપીયે એ રાશનકીટ તે એમને હવે શાંતિ થઈ ગઈ. પગ વળતો નથી તે ખુરશીમાં બેઠા બેઠા પોતાનું રાંધી લે. એમણે કહ્યું, 

'ભગવોન તમારા બધાનું ખુબ હારુ કરે. નકર આ કળજુગમો કુણ ધ્યોન રાખ..'અમે કહ્યું, 'ધ્યાન રાખવાનું તો કુદરત કરે માટે જ અમને મોકલી આપ્યા.'એમણે હાથ પકડ્યો.. એક જુદી રીતે વહાલ વર્ષાવ્યું. અમે જવા કહ્યું તો એમણે કહ્યું, 

'મારા ઘર પાછળ મારા જેવી જ દુઃખી બઈ હ્. માર તો રેવા ઘર હ્ પણ ઈનું તો... તમે એક ફેરા જોતા જો..'

મંગુમાની આંખોમાં કરુણા હતી. એ જેમની વાત કરતા હતા તે ધુળી મા.. એમને પણ મળવાનું હતું. પણ મને ગમ્યું કે એ એમની તકલીફની સાથે અન્યોની પણ સમજે છે ને કોઈ એમને પણ સહારો આપે એ માટે આંગળી ચીંધે છે. સામાન્ય રીતે માણસમાં ઈર્ષાભાવ હોય એટલે આવું આંગળી ચિંધવાનું ઘણી વખત ન થાય..

ખેર રિદ્રોલમાં રહેતા કીરણભાઈ સ્વયમસેવક તરીકે અમને મદદ કરે. તેમણે જ મંગુ મા અને અન્ય માવતરોને શોધી આપ્યા. બાકી અમારો કાર્યકર રીઝવાન વખતો વખત એમનું ધ્યાન રાખે... ને તમે સૌ આવા માવતરોને રાશન આપવામાં મદદ કરો...

Mafakaka from Gandhinagar’s Samou stays alone in a small single-room shanty like a house devoid of power or other facilities. Since Kaka cannot work because of his age,  he begs for money to buy grains to cook his meals. However, Jitubhai, his neighbor, takes utmost care of kaka’s well-being, bringing him tea twice a day and whatever else he might need. 

VSSM began providing Mafakaka with a monthly ration kit, so he does not have to beg for money. But his house is in complete tethers. The tin roof is filled with holes, so spending the monsoon inside the house would be challenging. It also does not have a power connection.

With support from its donors,  VSSM carried out the repairs of Mafakaka’s house. Jitubhai (in black T-shirt) has an extended power connection from his house.

VSSM’s Rizwan brings him a monthly ration kit.

I recently had the opportunity to meet him, “Hope everything is ok now and you are at peace.” I inquired.

“Everything is fine, I have no worries. Life has become stress-free. And I also get to smoke chilam and a fair amount of  chai.” A happy Kaka reveals how life has gotten better. At his age, we weren’t going to advise him to give up smoking chilam. All we wish is for him to be happy.

It was a scorching summer day when we met Kaka, seated outside his house. His condition had pained us. We had shared the image of kaka’s house before we met him to understand his living situation. Kaka had come across as a mentally unstable individual, but our recent meeting proved otherwise. He was fine, talked well, and seemed happy.

The initiative under which we provide care and support to these elderly is called Maavjat. It has become one of the favorite programs of our team. And it is your invaluable support that helps us reach these elderly.

મફાકાકા ગાંધીનગરના માણસના સમૌમાં રહે..

એકલા છે. ઘર આમ તો ઘર શું નાનકડી ઓરડી જેમાં લાઈટ કે અન્ય કોઈ સુવિધા નહીં. કામ તો થાય નહીં એટલે લોકો પાસેથી પૈસા માંગે ને જે મળે તેમાંથી અનાજ લાવી રાંધી ખાય. 

પડોશમાં રહેતા જીતુભાઈ મફાકાકાનું જબરુ ધ્યાન રાખે.. બે ટાઈમ ચા આપે. એ સિવાય પણ કાકાને જ્યારે જરૃર પડે ત્યારે મદદ કરે. 

મફાકાકાને અમે રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું જેથી માંગવું ન પડે. એ બે ટંક પેટ ભરીને ખાઈ શકે છે. પણ જે ઓરડીમાં રહે તે ઓરડીના બધા પતરા કાણા. ચોમાસુ કાઢવું તો બહુ અઘરુ પડે. વળી લાઈટ પંખાની સુવિધા નહીં. 

અમે એમની ઓરડી રીપેર કરી આપવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. આપે એ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરી. જીતુભાઈએ લાઈટ, પંખા માટે વિજળી પોતાના ઘરેથી આપી. જીતુભાઈ ફોટોમાં કાળી ટીશર્ટમાં..

બાકી દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું કામ અમારો રીઝવાન કરે..

કાકાને હમણાં મળવાનું થયું મે પુછ્યું, કાકા હવે શાંતિ છે.. એમણે કહ્યું. હવે બધી વાતે હખ છે. જીવને તોબા નથી.. 

કાકાને ચલમની ટેવ. કાકા કહે, બે ટંક ચા ને ચલમ વના મને ન ચાલે.. 

ઉંમર થઈ હવે ચલમ છોડવાનું તો શું કહીએ.. પણ એ રાજી રહે એવું કરવાનું.

અમે એમને ધોમધખતા તાપમાં ઘર બહાર નેવા નીચે બેઠેલા જોયેલા. જોઈને જીવ બળી ગયેલો. એ ફોટો પણ આ સાથે મુકુ છુ જેથી પહેલાનું ઘર ખબર પડે. પણ એ વખતે કાકાને જાણે ઝાઝી સુઝબુઝ ન હોય એવું લાગેલું.

પણ ઘર થયા પછી મળી તો ચહેરાની રોનક જ બદલાઈ ગયેલી... એમની સાથે સરસ વાત થઈ.

આવા વડિલોને સાતા આપવાનો અમારા માવજત કાર્યક્રમ. અમારી ટીમનું આ સૌથી ગમતીલું કામ.

Mittal Patel meets Sanakaka 

Sanaakaka resides in Halol’s Katol village. A few years ago, his legs lost their ability to function in an accident. There is no one in the family to look after Sanaakaka; he has a Ma Card but did need cash to meet his medical and other needs. Therefore, he sold off his only asset, his tethered home. After the accident the times had been harsh for Kaka, he needed money for treatment. Hence, he made a pact with a buyer that allows him to stay in the house till he lives after which the house is his. The house was sold for Rs 1 lac, the amount kaka used for his treatment.

 Kaka had worked as farm labor all his life, he had lost his wife a few years ago, and the accident has made him a dependent.

The neighbours helped him when needed; some brought him food, mostly leftovers after the family had finished eating.

VSSM began providing a monthly ration kit to Kaka and worked on an arrangement where a lady in the neighborhood would cook meals for him from the ration kit. As a result, Kaka is at peace now; he doesn’t have to depend on others’ sympathy.

Kaka wished for a hand-powered tricycle to increase his mobility. It becomes boring to remain seated inside the house. The front porch outside his home has a leaking roof. Kaka has no choice but to stay confined in the house. Of course, we will repair his house.

And it is not just Sanakaka, VSSM has been supporting 315 destitute elderly,  and the number keeps growing daily. If possible, you can choose to become guardians to these elderlies in need. સનાકાકા હાલોલના કાતોલ ગામમાં રહે.. થોડા વર્ષ પહેલાં અકસ્માત થયો ને એમના પગ કામ કરતા બંધ થયા. 

પરિવારમાં દીકરો કે અન્ય કોઈ સાર સંભાળ રાખી શકે તેવું નહીં. મા કાર્ડ હતુ જેના પર તેમની સારવાર થઈ છતાં પૈસાની જરૃર તો પડી. આખરે સનાકાકાએ પોતાનું ઘર જેમાં રહેવાનું આજના સમયમાં તો મુશ્કેલ.આવું જર્જરીત ઘર કાકાએ એક વ્યક્તિને પોતે જ્યાં સુધી જીવશે ત્યાં સુધી તેમાં રહેશે ને પોતે નહીં હોય ત્યારે એ વ્યક્તિનું એ શરતે એક લાખમાં વેચ્યું ને એ એક લાખમાં પોતાની સારવારમાં ખૂટતુ કર્યું. 

કાકાના પત્ની વર્ષો પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયા. કાકા ખેતમજૂરી કરી પોતાનું પુરુ કરતા પણ અકસ્માત પછી કામ થવાનું બંધ થયું.

આડોશી પાડોશી નાની મોટી મદદ કરે ને કાકાનું ચાલે. પણ કાકા કહે, એ બધુ કવેળાનું કોઈના ઘરે રાંધેલું વધારાનું પડ્યું હોય તો લોકો દઈ જાય. પણ એ બધુ કટાણે... 

અમારા કાર્યકર વિનોદના ધ્યાને આ વાત આવી અને અમે કાકાને દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું ને ગામમાં રહેતા એક બહેન કાકાને એ રાશનમાંથી જમવાનું બનાવીને આપી જાય. કાકાને હવે હખ છે. હવે કોઈની ઓશિયાળી વેઠવી નથી પડતી. 

પણ કાકાની ઈચ્છા એમને હાથથી ચલાવવાની સાયકલ મળે તેવી. જેથી એ થોડું ઘણું જાતે ફરી શકે. સતત ઘરે અને એકની એક જગ્યાએ બેસીને એ થાકે. સાથે ઘરમાં રહી શકાય તેવી સ્થિતિ નથી. તેમણે ઘર બહાર નાનકડુ ઢાળિયું કર્યું છે પણ ઢાળિયામાં પતરાં ચુવે. કાકા કહે, ક્યારેક ટૂંટિયું વાળી પડ્યો રહુ. આ છાપરુ સરખુ કરી આપવાનું પણ કરીશું..

અમે આવા 316 માવતરોને અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપીયે અને આ સંખ્યા દિવસે દિવસે વધી રહી છે. તમે પણ આવા માવતરોના પાલક બની શકો એ માટે 90999-36013 પર 10 થી 6માં સંપર્ક કરી શકો ને એક માવતરો માસીક રાશન ખર્ચ 1400 આપી શકો...
