The Rotary Club of Palanpur honours Mittal Patel with
the 2021 Banas Ratna Award

“We have decided to present you the 2021 Banas Ratna Award. Will you accept?”

Dr Shri Jayesh Bavishi who resides in Palanpur and remains actively associated with the welfare activities in the region called to share the news. The Rotary Club of Palanpur City has been involved in numerous welfare and charity pursuits, since 2005 they have been conferring the Banas Ratna Awards to individuals working for the betterment of Banaskantha.

The awards are presented to individuals residing in Banaskantha, I had assumed. I went ahead and asked Jayeshbhai the same to which he replied, “We confirm the honor upon individuals who have considered Banaskantha their own and have worked for the development of the region, they need not be residents of this district.”

The indeed was a joyous moment.

Our neighbour, Dama Uncle (Vasnat Dama) jokingly calls me Miss Banaskantha, and many have inquired  whether my native is Banaskantha. And it is an obvious inquiry. We have been working with the nomadic and de-notified communities in 22 districts of Gujarat but the environment related pursuits remain concentrated to Banaskantha only. Hence, one feels we only work in Banaskantha.

I am grateful to Rotary Club of Palanpur City for the honour. I hope along with this award you also connect with us to work on many other noble causes the region requires.

Most importantly, the award does not honour one individual, therefore the true recipients of this award are individuals who help  us chase our dreams, the team of VSSM and the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees for giving me the space to work with a strong team, to our well-wishers for trusting us always… you are the true recipients of these awards. And many thanks to Maulik, Kiara and my parents who have made it possible for me to continue on this path.

પાલનપુરમાં રહેતા ને સેવાકાર્યો સાથે સંકળાયેલા ડો. જયેશભાઈ બાવીશીનો આ સબબે ફોન આવ્યો. 

રોટરી ક્લબ પાલનપુર સીટી ઘણા સેવાકાર્યો સાથે સંકળાયેલી ને 2005થી બનાસ રત્ન એવોર્ડ તેઓ બનાસકાંઠામાં વિવિધ ક્ષેત્રે કાર્ય કરતા લોકોને આપે..

જયેશભાઈના મોંઢે એવોર્ડનું નામ સાંભળી પ્રથમ તો બનાસકાંઠાવાસીને આ એવોર્ડ અપાતો હોય તેમ લાગેલું ને જયેશભાઈને મે એ પુછી પણ લીધું. જવાબમાં જયેશભાઈએ કહ્યું, 

બનાસકાંઠાના વતની ન હોય પણ જેમણે બનાસકાંઠાને પોતાનું માન્યું હોય અને જિલ્લાના વિકાસના કાર્યોમાં રસ દાખવ્યો હોય તેને એ સન્માન અમે આપીએ...

આમ આ ધન્યતાની ઘડી તો ખરી જ...

અમારા પડોશી દામા અંકલ(વસંત દામા) મને રમૂજમાં મીસ બનાસકાંઠા કહે.. તો ઘણા લોકો મને તમે બનાસકાંઠાના વતની એમ પુછે... એમનું આવું પુછવું - કહેવું સ્વાભાવીક મૂળ વિચરતી વિમુક્ત જાતિઓ સાથેનું અમારુ કાર્ય ગુજરાતના 22 જિલ્લામાં પણ પર્યાવરણલક્ષી કાર્યો ફક્ત બનાસકાંઠામાં કરીએ એટલે સૌને અમે બનાસકાંઠામાં જ કાર્ય કરીએ એમ વધુ લાગે...

રોટરી કલ્બ પાલનપુર સીટીનો આ સન્માન માટે ઘણો આભાર.. એવોર્ડ સાથે તમે અમારી સાથે જોડાવ અને આપણે સાથે મળીને વધારે સતકાર્યોમાં નિમિત્ત બનીએ એમ ઈચ્છુ..

છેલ્લે ખાસ મહત્વની વાત.. એવોર્ડ કે સન્માનનું કોઈ વ્યક્તિ ક્યારેય હકદાર ન ગણાય એટલે આ એવોર્ડ આ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરનાર સ્વજનોથી લઈને VSSM ટીમ અને ટ્રસ્ટીમંડળના સૌનો.. 

મજબૂત ટીમ સાથે કાર્યો કરવાની મોકળાશ આપનાર ટ્રસ્ટી મંડળ અને અમારામાં શ્રદ્ધા મુકી મદદ કરનાર સ્વજનો આના સાચા હકદાર... 

અને હા મારો પરિવાર મૌલિક, કિઆરા અને મારા માતા-પિતાનો પણ આભાર.. તેમને મને આ કાર્યો કરવાની અનુકુળતા કરી આપી...

Water is life and yet we have chosen to care the least for this natural element that is so crucial to human existence.

The groundwater levels in most parts of our country are dwindling at an alarming rate. VSSM has initiated Participatory Water Management program to address the severe water crisis in the Banaskantha region. It has been working with the local communities to deepen the village lakes. In the past 3 years it has deepened 87 lakes in various villages of Banaskantha. We plan to take the program forward even in 2020. A planning and strategy building exercise has been initiated with the village leaders in this regard. A meeting with the Sarpanch and leaders of Savan village was organised. A thorough discussion on  why this concern for the current water scenario, joining hands with local communities, it was also decided to request the government to link and  fill up of lakes with the water from Sardar Sarovar’s main canal. The members pledged to look beyond personal interests and goals and work collectively for the greater good. Be true ‘sons of the soil’.

This year too we hope to receive a positive and forward looking response to the water conservation efforts in Banaskantha. It is for the community to prove that though the earth has dried up in the region their hearts haven’t and they still care for the drying underbelly of this planet we call home. I am grateful to all who decided to remain present in the meeting and contribute for a better and greener future.

જળ એ જીવન..

આપણે સૌ આ વાતને જાણીએ સમજીએ છતાં જળની જોઈએ એવી ચિંતા આપણે કરતા નથી તે હકીકત છે..

બનાસકાંઠામાં પાણીના તળની સ્થિતિ ખરાબ થઈ રહી છે. આ તળને સાબદા રાખવા આપણા પરંપરાગત જલ સ્ત્રોતોને સાચવવા અને તેને ફરીથી સાબદા- સરખા કરવા જરૃરી છે.

અમે છેલ્લા ત્રણ વર્ષમાં બનાસકાંઠામાં 87 તળાવ ઊંડા કર્યા.

2020માં જલ અભીયાન અંતર્ગત તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું પાછું શરૃ કરવું છે..

પણ એ પહેલાં જાગૃત સરપંચો, ગામના આગેવાનો સાથે એક બેઠક કરવાનું કર્યું અને દિયોદરના સણાવ ગામે એ બેઠક સંપન્ન થઈ.

જે ગામલોકો પોતાના ગામનું તળાવ ઊંડુ કરાવવા ઈચ્છે તે ગામના લોકોની ભાગીદારીથી તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું બેઠકમાં નક્કી થયું.

વળી બહુ વિસ્તારથી પાણીની ચિંતા શા માટે કરવી જોઈએ તેની પણ ચર્ચા થઈ.

આ સાથે જે તળાવો નર્મદા કેનાલ કે પાઈપલાઈનની આસપાસમાં છે તે ગામના તળાવો કેનાલના પાણીથી ભરવા માટેની રજૂઆત સરકારમાં કરવાનું પણ નક્કી થયું.

બેઠકમાં સૌ સ્વજનોને સ્વાર્થથી ઉપર ઊઠી ખરા ધરતીપુત્ર બનવા આહવાન પણ કરવામાં આવ્યું.

આશા રાખીએ આ વર્ષનું જલ અભીયાન સુંદર લોકભાગીદારીથી શરૃ અને પૂર્ણ થાય.

બનાસકાંઠો સૂક્કો પણ લોકોના મન સુક્કા નથી એ વાત પાણી અભીયાનથી આપણે સૌએ અન્યોને સાબિત કરી આપવાની છે. આશા રાખુ આખુ બનાસકાંઠા જાગે અને પાણીની પોતાના તળની ચિંતા કરે..

“Ben, we shall not only plant trees, but also create a nursery for plants.  We already have a person assigned with the responsibility of raising and caring for the trees. . Along with the trees we will raise 400-500 saplings for the plantation drive next year. This way we can plant trees over the land where the  gando baval  rules these days. The village wasteland will transform to green from the arid it is right now.”

Bhanabhai, sarpanch of Makhanu village was quite confident that this shall happen, “ It is not easy to carry our development related tasks these days. But the entire Makhanu Panchayat will stand besides us. Our Panchayat team is extremely strong and determined and we have the cooperation of our members.”

Bhanabhai’s narration on the village dynamics is absolutely true. There are Sarpanch who would go beyond their responsibility to get the work done, they would also never hesitate to spend their own money towards public works  while there are others who can be extremely selfish too.  It was because of  the leadership of Makhanu that we could get two lakes deepened from the contribution of the villagers while the third one deepened with government support.

The village  collectively decided to appoint Narsinhbhai as the caretaker for the trees, from 15th May onwards he will start preparing the soil and plantation beds for the upcoming tree plantation drive.

Bhanabhai and others have agreed to take up the responsibility of monitoring and driving the effort.

'બેન આ ફેરા ઝાડખા વાવશું ઈની હારો હાર નર્સરીયે કરશું. ઝાડખાની હાચવણી હાતર મોણસ તો રાખેલો જ હ. આ ઝાડખા હારોહાર બહો પાંનસો રોપા ઉસરે તો આવતા ચોમાસે ગોમના ચરામાં થેલા બાવળિયા કાઢીન તો આ રોપા રોપીએ તો ઘણી લીલોતરી થઈ જાય...'

મખાણું ગામના સરપંચ ભાણાભાઈ આ કામ થશે એવા ભરોષા સાથે આ વાત કરી રહ્યા હતા..

એમણે કહ્યું,

'પંચાયતના બધા સભ્યો આપણા કોમમાં આપણી હારો હાર ઊભા રેસે. અમાર સભ્યોની ટીમ મજબૂત હ. સભ્યોના સાથ સહકાર ઘણો હ નકર ગોમમાં વિકાસના કોમો કરવા આજ હેલા નહીં.'

ભાણાભાઈની વાત સો ટકા સાચી. કેટલાક ગામોમાં સરપંચ બહુ ઉત્સાહી પોતાના ઘરના પૈસા કાઢીને કામ કરે એવા તો કેટલાક સખત સ્વાર્થી...

ખેર મખાણુંની આવી મજબૂત ટીમના લીધે અમે ગામમાં બે તળાવો ગ્રામજનો અને એક તળાવમાં સરકારની મદદ લઈને ઊંડા કરી શક્યા.

ગામના નરસીહભાઈને પંચાયતના તમામ સભ્યોએ મળીને ઝાડની જાળવણી માટે સેવક સહાય સાથે નિયુક્ત કર્યા.

આગામી 15મેથી જ્યાં ઝાડ વાવવાના છે તે જગ્યા ફરતે વાડ કરવાનું નરસીહભાઈ શરૃ કરશે.

ભાણાભાઈ અને પંચાયતના અન્ય સભ્યોએ આ ઝાડની દેખરેખની જવાબદારી સ્વીકારી.

ફોટોમાં જ્યાં પહેલા નામનું જ તળાવ હતું તે તળાવ જે અમે ઊંડું કર્યું...

તથા વનીકરણ માટે સજ્જ મખાણું સરપંચની આગેવાનીમાં પંતાયતની ટીમ, 

અશોકભાઈ તથા ઝાડની માવજત કરવાની જેમને જવાબદારી સોંપી છે તે નરસીંહકાકા.
