Of all the initiatives we undertake for the welfare and empowerment of nomadic communities, Mavjat remains a favourite with the entire team of VSSM.

The elders we support are not related by blood, but practising the value of the 'entire universe is one family' makes them our family, and the affection they shower warms our heart and soul.

Recently, while I was in Patan's Harij, my teammate Mohanbhai took me to meet Ram Ma and Mafat Kaka. Their's was a house with two doors, and both these elderly were seated at each door; they looked gloomy. "Ben is here to meet you," Mohanbhai informed.

"Please come, what do I offer you?" they said on seeing me come to them.

The couple lived in great scarcity; still, they did not forget their courtesy.

The couple has grown old; they have no one to look after them. Age prevents them from working as labour, so they depend on others to give them food. So VSSM began providing a monthly ration kit so that they do not have to rely on others for food.

Since they cook food on chula their house is covered with soot from inside, the tin roof had numerous holes, "How do you spend monsoons?" an obvious question escaped my mouth.

"One roof is still intact; both of us lie under that roof on a single charpoy," Kaka responded.

I think the house must be built under government assistance; there was no electricity. A kerosene lamp is lit up during the evenings, and the lights from the houses surrounding them light up their home.

Kaka has breathing issues, so he needs to take medicine regularly. "I try to run the expenses from the elderly pension we get, but it becomes challenging. We had to depend on people bringing us food, or I had to go out and beg. Now that you provide us with ration, we need not worry about food." Kaka had shared how much relief the ration kit has been.

These efforts of providing well-being to the elders in need bring goodness to us.

વિચરતી જાતિઓના કલ્યાણનું કાર્ય અમે વર્ષોથી કરીએ પણ માવજત કાર્યક્રમ અમારા બધા કાર્યકરોનો સૌથી ચહીતો...

એવા માવતરો જેમની સાથે આમ લોહીનો કોઈ સંબંધ નહીં પણ વસુદૈવ કુટુંબના નાતે જેમને અમે પોતાના માન્યા એ માવતરોને મળીએ ત્યારે એમના હેતથી અમને ભીંજવી નાખે..

પાટણના હારીજમાં રહેતા રામમા અને મફતકાકાને અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈ મળવા લઈ ગયા. એક ઘરને બે દરવાજા આ બેય દરવાજે આ બેય માવતર ઘેરી નિરાશા સાથે બેઠેલા..મોહનભાઈએ કહ્યું, 'બેન મળવા આવ્યા છે' તો એકદમ ઊભા થયા ને 'ભલે આવ્યા બાપલા, તમારી હું મનવાર કરુ?' એમ એમણે કહ્યું...

અભાવ છે છતાં મનવારનો વિવેક એ ન ચુક્યા.. 

અવસ્થા થઈ સંભાળ રાખનાર કોઈ નથી.. કોઈ આપે ને ખાય તેવી દશા... ઓશિયાળી ઘણી વેઠવાની થાય એટલે જ અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું કર્યું.

એમનું ઘર અંદરથી આખુ કાળુ કાળુ. મૂળ ઘરમાં ચૂલો અને ધુમાડિયું એમાં નહીં તે આખુ ઘર કાળુ.. મે ઘરમાં જરા ઝાંખીને જોયું તો પતરામાં નાના ઘણા કાણા દેખાયા. એટલે અનાયાસે જ કાકાને પુછાઈ ગયું, 'કાકા ચોમાસુ?'

તો કાકાએ કહ્યું, 'એક પતરુ સાજુ છે જેમાંથી ચુવા નથી થતા તે એક ખાટલામાં અમે બે એ પતરાની નીચે પડ્યા રહીએ.. ' 

ઘર સરકારી રાહતમાં બન્યું હશે.. પણ એમાં લાઈટની સુવિધા નથી. સંધ્યા થતા કેરોસીનનો દિવો એ ઘરમાં રોજ સળગે. એમના ઘરની આજુબાજુ સરસ પાક્કા ઘર ને વિજળી પણ ખરી....

કાકાને શ્વાસ ઘણો ચડે તે દવાઓ પણ લેવી પડે. કાકા કહે, 'સરકારનું પેન્શન આવે તેમાંથી દવા ને ઘર ચલાવવા કોશીશ કરીએ... પુરુ નતુ થતું, લોકો દયા કરીને આપી જાય કે હું માંગી આવતો પણ હવે મને હખ છે તમે આપો છો તે આખો મહિનો નિરાંતે ખવાય છે..'

નિરાધાર માવતરોને સાતા આપવાનું આ ઉત્તમ કાર્ય અમને સૌને સાતા આપે.. 1400 રૃપિયા એક માવતરનો મહિનાનો નિભાવ ખર્ચ થાય.

“Why would you ask for a ration from us when others in the village are taking good care of you and providing ration to you as well?!”

“I am from this village, the people who provide feel the burden in doing so, they do not tell me so, but I can comprehend. There is a sense of awkwardness when we meet almost daily. While you outsiders, I will not be meeting you daily, so there is a little ease in asking from you!!”

Benap’s Gangama effortlessly eased off the burden of taking and giving. Of course, giving and helping the poor has never been a burden for us. 

Gangama’s husband passed away seven years ago, living behind Gangama and their son Sendhabhai who suffered some mental issues.

As age progressed, Gangama began experiencing physical challenges and mobility issues, requiring her to depend on the villagers to provide her. The residents of Benap are a generous lot especially, its sarpanch Paragbhai and other leaders. The moment  Ganagama went and stood before them they would provide grains, pulses, milk, buttermilk even before she would ask for help. Once we began providing her with the ration kit, it brought her peace, she need not have to worry about bringing food to her plate. While we were taking her leave she remarked, “Instead of Bajri flour give us the grains, I will get it milled. These flour suppliers adulterate it a lot.”

I liked the way Gangama instructed us with much authority, she considered us her own. “Sure we will send Bajri instead of flour,” we assured her before leaving Benap.

VSSM’s team takes good care of such needy elderly. Gangama is looked after by our Bhagwanbhai. VSSM is fortunate to have such hardworking and compassionate team members.

We are grateful to all of you who help us support 165 such needy elderly. It has helped us bring peace and wellness to these elders during the fag end of their lives.

'મુ આ ગોમની કેવરવું. જીમની પાહે મોહુ ઈમન મન જોઈન્ ભાર લાગ્. એ બચારા ના નઈ પાડતા પણ મારુ મન બહુ કચવાય. પણ તમે તો બારના. તમારી પાહે મોગી હકાય અને આપણે ચો રોજ રોજ મળવાના. એટલ તમન્ ક્ મન કોઈ ભાર ના રે..'

કેવી સરસ વાત બેણપના ગંગામાને માંગવાનો ને અમને આપવાનો ભાર ન રહે.. 

આમ જુઓ તો અમે નિમિત્ત હતા એટલે  ભાર તો અમનેય શાનો રહે...

ગંગામાંના પતિ સાત વર્ષ પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયા. પરિવારમાં એક દિકરો સેંધાભાઈ પણ એમની માનસીક સ્થિતિ ઠીક નહિ .

ઉંમર થતા હાથ પગ ચાલતા બંધ થયા. ગામની ઓશિયાળી વેઠવાની થતી. જોકે બેણપ ગામ સરસ ને એમાંય સરપંચ પરાગભાઈને એમના જેવા બીજાય ઘણા દયાવાન. ગંગામા એમની પાસે જઈને ઊભા રહે તો માંગ્યા વગર લોકો બાજરી, મગ, દૂધ, છાશ આપી દે..પણ અમે રાશનકીટ આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું પછી એમને ઘણી શાંતિ થઈ ગઈ...

એમને મળીને અમે નીકળી રહ્યા હતા ત્યાં એમણે કહ્યું, 'બાજરીના લોટ કરતા આલીખા બાજરી આલજો.  આ લોટવાળા મારા બેટા ભેળશેળ કર. એટલ દળાબ્બાનું મુ કરી લઈશ. ઈની ચિંત્યા તમે ના કરતા..'

કેવા અધિકારથી ગંગામા વાત કરે મને ખુબ ગમ્યું.. હવેથી બાજરી આપીશુંની કહી અમે બેણપમાંથી વિદાય લીધી..... 

અમારા કાર્યકરો આવા માવતરોનું ખુબ ધ્યાન રાખે ગંગામાનું ધ્યાન અમારા ભગવાનભાઈ રાખે...આવા સરસ કાર્યકરો મળવા એ પણ નસીબ...

ને ગંગામા જેવા 165 માવતરોને રાશન આપવામાં મદદ કરનાર સૌ પ્રિયજનોનો આભાર... એમના સહયોગથી જ આવા માવતરોને જીવનના અંતિમ તબક્કામાં સાતા આપવાનું કરી શકાય છે.

 “I have cooked dal-rice, but he is refusing to eat. How can he recover without eating? He is also feeling cold!!

After sharing this, she pointed towards her son lying on the charpoy next to hers and showed her son lying, shivering with cold under the blanket. Maheshbhai looked at me, he looked frail, as if age had caught up after long illness.

Laxmiben’s husband had passed away 15 years ago.  It was Mahesbhai who earned the living for his mother and self. And all of a sudden Mahesbhai fell ill.

“Is there anyone else in the family to take care of you?” we asked Laxmima.

The question brought tears into Laxmima. The air around grew thick with sorrow. We did not know how to respond!!

“Ma, please do not worry. We will take care of you, will ensure Maheshbhai receives proper treatment.” I assured

“Do not hospitalise him, who will take care of him at the hospital. Just get him treated and bring him back. I cannot…” Laxmi Ma  could speak no further.

“We shall do so, Ma!” I responded. I did not feel like saying anything more.

“I had another son, elder to Mahesh. He too developed some skin infection, the leg was swollen, he remained ill for some time and passed away before my eyes. And now it is him…” Laxmi Ma shared.

It is the children who take care of their parents but when parents need to become caregivers… it pains beyond comprehension.

VSSM, with the support it receives from its well-wishers, is providing ration kit to Laxmi Ma.

I was at Laxmi Ma’s to inquire if she needed anything else, but after witnessing the situation there was nothing more to ask.

What I witnessed today shook me, the mother-son duo living besides Nadiad’s Malarpur road surviving in a kuccha brick-clay house was utterly helpless, the condition they survived in was beyond comprehension.

I am grateful to VSSM’s Rajnibhai for identifying families who truly need our support.

We will be assisting Mahesbhai with his medical examination and further treatment.

Almighty, we are all your children, how can you put anyone under so much pain.  No one deserves to endure so much suffering. A prayer escapes my heart seeking protection for fellow brethren...

'આ જુઓને બેન દાળ-ભાત રાંધ્યા છે પણ આ ખાવાની જ ના પાડે છે.. ખાધા વગર તે કાંઈ ચાલે? પાછુ એને ટાઢેય ચડે છે' એમ કહીને એમણે પોતાના ખાટલાની બાજુમાં ગોદડુ ઓઢી ટુંટીયું વાળીને સુતેલા એમના દીકરાના મોંઢા પરથી ગોદડું હટાવ્યું ને મહેશભાઈ એ મારી સામે જોયું.. 

શરીર સાવ નંખાઈ ગયેલું. ઉંમર ઘણી નહીં હોય પણ લાંબી માંદગીના લીધે અકાળે વૃદ્ધ થઈ ગયેલા એ જણાયા.

નડિયાદમાં રહેતા લક્ષ્મી મા રાવળના ઘરવાળા 15 વર્ષ પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયા. એ વખતે મહેશભાઈ કમાઈને લાવતા ને મા- દીકરો જીવન ગુજારતા પણ અચાનક મહેશભાઈએ ખાટલો પકડ્યો. 

લક્ષ્મી માને કુટુંબમાં અન્ય કોઈ તમારુ ધ્યાન રાખવાવાળુ નથી? એવું પુછ્યું ને એમની આંખોમાંથી આંસુની ધારા વહેવા માંડી. ઘડીક તો વાતાવરણ ગમગીન થઈ ગયું. શું કહેવું કશું સમજાયું નહીં.

'મા ચિંતા ન કરો અમે ધ્યાન રાખીશું. મહેશભાઈને દવાખાને લઈ જવાનું પણ ગોઠવી દઈશું..'  એવું મે કહ્યું તો સામે એમણે કહ્યું, 

'એને દાખલ ન કરતાં. ઈન્જેકશ અલાઈન પાસો લઈ આવજો. દવાખાને એની ચાકરી કોણ કરે? અને મને એના વગર...' 

આગળ એ કશું બોલી ન શક્યા....

'હા એમ જ કરીશું મા' આનાથી વધારે કશુંયે પુછવાનું મને મન ન થયું ત્યાં એમણે કહ્યું, 

'મારે એક દીકરો હતો આના કરતાં મોટો પણ એનેય આની(મહેશભાઈ સામે આંગળી કરીને) જેમ પગમાં ખરજવું થયું ને પછી પગમાં સોજાને પછી લાંબી માંદગી. મારી નજર સામે જ એ ગુજરી ગયો.. હવે આની હાલત..'

બાળકો મા બાપની સેવા કરે એની જગ્યાએ માને  દીકરાની સેવા કરવાની... કાળજુ કેવું કંપતુ હશે આ માનું?

મા- દિકરો પેટ ભરીને ખાઈ શકે તે માટે VSSM સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્નેહીજનોની મદદથી અમે આમને દર મહિને રાશન આપીએ. તે રાશન બરાબર મળે છે. વધારે કશું જોઈએ છે કે કેમ? એ વિગત મેળવવા ને સાથે એમની ખબર પુછવા હું એમના ઘરે ગઈ પણ હાલત જોઈને બીજુ કશુંયે પુછી શકાયું નહીં.

ખેડાના નડિયાદમાં મલારપુરામાં રોડની બાજુમાં જ ઈંટ માટીમાંથી ચણેલાં કાચા છાપરાંમાં રહેતા આ બેઉંની સ્થિતિ જોઈને મનથી હલી જવાયું... કલ્પના પણ ના કરી શકીએ એવી સ્થિતિ છે આ બેઉની. 

અમારા કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈ જેમણે આ પરિવારને શોધી આપ્યો તેમનો આભાર માનુ છું.. 

મહેશભાઈને દવાખાને બતાવવાનું તો કરીશું ને એમની તકલીફમાં સાથે ઊભા રહેવાનું પણ વસુદૈવ કુટુંબકમઃમાં માનીએ એટલે કરીશું.. 

સાથે કુદરતને,  આ બધા તારા સંતાનો છે એમની આ તકલીફ તુ કેવી રીતે જોઈ શકે છે? માટે હે ઈશ્વર કર્મનો સિદ્ધાંત બરાબર છતાં આવી તકલીફમાં કોઈનેય ન મુક. આમ કોઈને નોંધારા ન કરની તને પ્રાર્થના... 

ફોટો સ્થિતિ સમજાય એ ખાતર જ મુક્યા છે...

 Recently, I happen to meet Teji Maa in Radhanpur’s Lotiya village

“Maa, I hope the ration kits reach you on time??”

“Oh yes!! I have enough ration now. But ever since I have the dal-rice in my house, it has been difficult to sleep.”

I was surprised at this co-relation. Once we have food in the house,  we are usually relieved but this was a reverse statement of Teji Maa losing sleep because of the food she has in the house now.

“Why have you lost your sleep?” I asked with intrigue.

“These rats!! They pay me a daily visit in the calm of night. Now they too have food to bite. All the groceries – the dal and rice you give is stored in plastic bags, the rats love to bite into it all. That sound of kat-kat, kat-kat keeps me awake.  I have to get up and keep moving the bags, but rats are very good at finding it all. The moment I lie down they are back and begin biting kat-kat…!!”

This did make me laugh!! “So tell me what should we do to free you from this problem?”

“Bring me some containers that the rats cannot bite into, it will help me sleep well!!”

“We sure will bring you containers, Maa!! Anything else that is bothering you, do let us know!!”

“Nothing else, what more can I ask for. You all are taking such good care of me. I was helpless as I could not work to buy daily meals. Now I do not need to stretch my arms for food!!”

Later, Teji Maa took me to see her shanty.  One look at the place and I remembered my previous question if she has any other issues!!

“You don’t have a house!?”

“How long do I have to live now?”

Teji Maa widowed at a very young age, brothers brought her back to maternal home along with her small daughter. The daughter grew was married off but her economic condition remained weak too. Whenever she comes to meet Teji Maa,  she gives her 100-200 rupees.

“Brothers brought me home, provided shelter. They too have families to look after with their weak economic conditions. I cannot expect more from them. They have always helped me, but I had there was this expectation from my side. I now do not have to expect anything from anyone.”

VSSM team remains in search of such destitute elders. Shankarbhai has been taking very good care of Teji Maa. VSSM provides ration kits to such elderly through its Maavjat, an initiative that aims to care for the destitute elderly.

It was getting late, I asked for her permission to leave.

“Don’t forget the containers!” Teji Maa said with a right our parents or family elders would instruct us.

It made me happy.

To age is difficult,  that too when one is  poor and destitute! It sure is tough.

તેજીમાં ને રાધનપુર પાસેના લોટિયાગામમાં મળવા જવાનું થયું. 

મે પુછ્યું 'મા, રાશન સમયસર મળી જાય છે ને?'

'હોવ રાશન તો મલી જાય. પણ બળ્યું તમે આ ચોખા ન દાળ ન એ બધુ આલ્યુ તાણથી આખી રાત ઊંઘી હકતી નહીં'

સાંભળીને નવાઈ લાગી. અનાજ ઘરમાં ભર્યું હોય તો કોઈની ઓશિયાળી વેઠવાની ન થાય એની જગ્યાએ તેજી માની ઊંઘ કેમ હરામ થઈ ગઈ છે?

'કેમ ઊંધ નથી થતી?'

'બળ્યુ આ ઉંદેડા? તમે ચોખા ન બધુ આલ્યુ એ બધુ કોથળીઓમોં ભર્યું હ્. આખી રાત ઉંદેળા એ કોથળીઓ કટકટ કર્યા કર. અવાજ આવ એટલ ઊભી થઈન કોથળી ઉપાડીન્ બીજે મેલું. પાસી આડી પડુ ક પાસુ કટ કટ... '

સાંભળીને હું હસી.. મે કહ્યું, 'તો આ પળોજળમાંથી મુક્ત કરવા શું કરીએ ક્યો?'

'મન ડબ્બા અલાઈ દો..એટલ મન નિરોત. હખેથી ઊંધી તો હકુ..'

ડબ્બા પહોંચાડી દઈશું માં. એ સિવાય કોઈ તકલીફ..'

'ના બાપલા ના બધી વાતનું સુખ.. આવુ ધ્યોન કુણ રાખ? મજૂરી થતી નતી. ખાવા પીવાની ઘણી ઓશિયાળી હતી પણ હવ્ કોઈ હોમે હાથ લોબો નહીં કરવો પડતો'

એ પછી તેજીમાં એમનું છાપરુ જોવા લઈ ગયા.. છાપરુ જોઈને તેજી માને પુછેલો બીજી કોઈ તકલીફવાળો પ્રશ્ન યાદ આવ્યો, 

એમણે કેમ ન કહ્યું, ઘર નથી! મે પુછ્યું તો કહે, 

તેજી મા કહે, 'હવ ચેટલું જીબ્બાનું...'

એષણા મુક્ત... તેજી મા... 

નાની ઉંમરે વિધવા થયા. એક દિકરી સાથે પીયરિયા એમને સાસરીમાંથી તેડી લાવ્યા. દીકરી મોટી થઈ એના લગ્ન કરાવ્યા. પણ એય એનું માંડ પુરુ કરે. વારે તહેવારે દીકરી આવે ત્યારે સો બસો તેજી માને આપી જાય..

પીયરિયા માટે તેજીમાં કહે, 'ભઈઓ લઈ આયા, આશરો આપ્યો એ ઘણું. એય ઈમનો વસ્તાર લઈન બેઠા, ઈમનુંય મોડ હેડ તો મારો બોજો.. તોય એ બધા થોડી ઘણી મદદ કરતા. પણ હવ માર કોઈનીયે ઓશિયાળી નઈ..'

આવા વડિલોને શોધવાનું અમારી ટીમ કરે. અમારા કાર્યકર શંકરભાઈ તેજીમાનું સરસ ધ્યાન રાખે.. 

vssm થકી આવા વડીલોને  દર મહિને રાશનકીટ આપવામાં આવે. આ કાર્ય બહુ સાતા આપે..

લોટિયામાં અમને ઘણું મોડુ થ્યું મે કહ્યું, રજા લઉં મા? એમણે કહ્યું, હોવ પણ ડબ્બાનું તમે ભૂલતા નઈ.. આ વાક્ય એકદમ અધિકારભાવથી એમણે કહ્યું. 

સાંભળીને રાજીથવાયું..

ઘડપણ... એય પાછુ નોંધારા વ્યક્તિનું.. 

કપરુ છે...
