Mittal Patel visits WaterManagement site

VSSM has initiated a water conservation campaign with an objective to retain the waters of villages and farms. The first phase of this campaign began in Banaskantha district where we have been receiving very good response. The communities are waking up to the urgent need to conserve water.

This year we have already kicked off the village lake deepening efforts. The works for the same are on in Sihori village in Kankrej. Recently, I was in the region to meet the community and monitor on-going efforts. The attached images share glimpses of the work in progress. As we have mentioned here at past occasions, VSSM takes the responsibility of JCB expenses while the villagers have to take the responsibility of ferrying the excavated soil.

I hope each villager shows concern about water and takes the required efforts to ensure the whatever water reservoirs they use are repaired and restored. It is our responsibility to conserve water for the coming generations. Lest we shall all be hopelessly repenting.

Lake deepening work

ગામનું પાણી ગામમાં ને સીમનું સીમમાં. આ વાક્યને ચરીતાર્થ કરવા - પાણીને બચાવવા અમે જળસંચય અભીયાન આરંભ્યું છે.

બનાસકાંઠામાં આરંભેલા આ અભીયાનને સારો પ્રતિસાદ મળી રહ્યો છે.

ગામલોકો ધીમે ધીમે પણ જાગૃત થઈ રહ્યા છે.

કાંકરેજના સીહોરીનું તળાવ ગાળવાનું પણ અમે શરૃ કર્યું. ગામલોકો સાથે તળાવ જોવા જવાનું થયું તે વેળાની કેટલીક તસવીરો અને તળાવ ખોદાવવાનું શરૃ કર્યું તે આ સાથે સમજવા ખાતર મૂકી છે.

ગામલોકો માટી ઉપાડવાનું કામ કરે અને સંસ્થા માટી ખોદી આપવાનું..

દરેક ગ્રામવાસી પાણીની ચિંતા કરે અને પોતાના વાસણો વરસાદ પહેલાં સાબદા કરવાનું કરે તેવી આશા રાખુ છું...

 VSSM’s Participatory Water Management campaign was launched to put this phrase into practice. The initiative was launched Banaskantha where the groundwater tables have gone alarmingly low. It all began with deepening of the village lakes. Until last year we have deepened 87 lakes in partnership with the village community.

This year too we have planned to continue with our efforts.  Kadol and Vadama have taken the lead and I was here recently to monitor the ongoing works. The enthusiasm with which the community has taken part in contributing their bit was encouraging to watch,

 The partnership is tricky yet mandatory. VSSM provides JCB expenses, the village takes the responsibility of ferrying the excavated soil and the entire community while also contributing to cash. The amount collected in cash will be eventually used for up-keeping of the common water resources.

As a result of our previous experiences, we plan to be stricter with the enforcement of these pre-conditions and do not intend to commence work where ever the contributions haven’t poured in.  Also do note that amount collected in the contribution is not managed by VSSM but the water committee that is formed to work on the water issues in the village. Why do we insist on contribution?

“Until how long should we depend on somebody else worry about what is ours, our water, our land, our resources. How long should one wait for the government to come and help or an organisation to come and do the needful? We need to take responsibility for common property resources that exist for our collective benefit. If one has contributed he or she will ask questions and show concern for it’s up-keeping. One will question if someone is encroaching over it or drawing water without permission.” It is to raise this kind of awareness that we have initiate strict enforcement of the contribution norm as well. And Vada, Khorda and Kuvaarva have contributed willingly towards the water corpus in their village. Hope we have similar experiences throughout the year!!!

પાણી પહેલાં પાળ બાંધીએ..

આ કહેવતને ચરિતાર્થ કરવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું અને ખરા અર્થમાં વરસાદી પાણીને બચાવવા અમે જળસંચય અભીયાન આરંભ્યું.

બનાસકાંઠામાં જ્યાં ભૂગર્ભજળની સ્થિતિ ખરાબ છે તે વિસ્તારોમાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું કાર્ય અમે આરંભ્યું.

87 તળાવો ગયા વર્ષ સુધી ઊંડા કર્યા આ વર્ષે પણ લોકભાગીદારી થકી તળાવો કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. ખડોલ, વડામાં તળાવ ઊંડા થઈ રહ્યા છે. જેને જોવા માટે જવાનું થયું. ગામનો ઉત્સાહ અને ભાગીદારી જોઈને રાજી થવાયું.

તળાવ ગાળવા માટેની ભાગીદારી જરા નોખી છે. સંસ્થા જેસીબીનો ખર્ચ કરે, માટી ઉપાડવાનું ગામના શીરે એ ઉપરાંત ગામલોકોએ ફાળો એકત્રીત કરવાનો.

આ ફાળો અમે તળાવો ગાળવામાં ઉપયોગમાં લઈશું.

આ વર્ષે થોડા કડક થયા છીએ ફાળો નહીં તો કામ નહીં. હા આ ફાળોનો વહીવટ અમે નથી કરતા તેની ખાસ નોંધ લેજો. ગામમાં પાણી સમિતિ બને અને એ વહીવટ કરે. પણ ફાળો તો જોઈએ જ...

ફાળા પાછળનો હાર્દ જરા સમજીએ.. મારા મતે ક્યાં સુધી કોઈ આવીને આપણા ગામના તળાવ ઊંડા કરે કે સરકાર કરે એની રાહ જોવાની?

આપણી ભાગીદારી નહીં હોય તો આપણે તળાવની ચિંતા કરવાનું નહીં કરીએ..

તમે પાંચ રૃપિયા તળાવ માટે આપ્યા હશે તો કાલે કોઈ તળાવમાં દબાણ કરશે તો તમે કહેશો ભાઈ રહેવા દે...

એટલે થોડા કડક શબ્દો સાથે જનભાગીદારી થકી આ કાર્ય કરવાનું આરંભ્યું છે.

વડા, ખોરડા અને કુંવારવાએ તો રાજી થઈને જનભાગાદીરીથી આ કાર્ય આરંભ્યું તમે ક્યારે સજ્જ થશો?

In the earlier days, the farmers would begin to have an easier workload after the Rabi crop was harvested because the groundwater wasn’t explored yet hence there was no possibility of farming during summers.  “So what did they do during this free time?” is an obvious thought that crosses our mind.

Do you think they spent their time ideally? Never! It is not in a farmer’s nature to sit still. They would till their soil and prepare their farms for the next season. They would repair and restore traditional water sources of their own and that of the village. Yes, they never depended on anybody else to come and take care of the water sources of their village. Today we depend on the government to come and take care of common property resources of our villages.

When we initiated the participatory water conservation works in Banaskantha the first condition was that the community will contribute both in the form of action and funds. The soil excavated by VSSM funded JCBs will be carried away by tractors that the community members will bring. Also, the villagers will have to contribute in cash to raise a corpus to work on the maintenance of the water sources of their village. The amount of the contribution of each household will depend on their capacity. However, the community hasn’t been prepared to provide cash contributions.

“We did send our tractors, so why money?”

“These are the lakes in your village, so you need to contribute.”

It is very difficult to get someone to contribute in cash.

If there are 300  houses in a village and each contributed Rs. 500 for upkeeping the lakes of their villages, the figure will be a decent Rs. 1.5 lacs. However, they would choose to spend the amount in any random expense over donating to maintain the lakes.

“The lake isn’t mine, so why to donate?” they argue.

“The lake is from your village when it brims with water it is also you who will benefit from it.”

I receive calls from many Sanpanch saying many villagers aren’t prepared to donate in cash.

And amidst such a discouraging scenario, the Kuvarva villages has performed beyond our expectations. The tractors arrived on schedule, they have already collected Rs. 50,000 in cash and more are on the way. We will be spending Rs. 5 lacs for the deepening on this lake plus a lac as community contribution will bring the amount to Rs. 6 lacs.

The pleasure of working in villages where villagers are supportive and understanding is beyond comprehension. It reflects the progressive mindset of the villagers. It shows they do not believe in charity neither do they like to be dependent on government and others for their needs. I hope other villages too draw inspiration from Kuvarva.

પહેલાંના સમયમાં ફાગણ ઉતરતા ખેતીકામમાંથી ખેડૂતો નવરા થવા માંડતા...

એ વેળા બોરવેલ નહોતા એટલે ઉનાળુ પાક કરવાની સંભાવના નહોતી...

ત્યારે સ્વાભાવીક ખેડૂતો કે ગામના લોકો ઉનાળામાં શું કરતા? તે પ્રશ્ન થાય.

રખેને નવરા બેસી રહેતા એવું કહેતા.. કારણ નવરા બેસી રહેવાનું આ કામગરા માણસોને ફાવે નહીં.

પોતાના ખેતરો ખેડી ચોમાસા માટે તૈયાર કરવાનું ખેડૂતો કરે સાથે પાણી સંગ્રહના સંશાધનો ઠીક કરવાનું તેઓ કરતા.

હા, ગામના તળાવો ગાળવનાનું તેઓ કોઈનીયે મદદ લીધા વગર જાતે કરતા.

આજે આપણે સૌ સરકાર પર આધારિત થઈ ગયા છીએ. મારા ગામનું તળાવ હું શું કામ ગાળુ સરકાર ગાળશે એવું આપણે જરાય શરમ વગર બોલીએ છીએ..

અમે તળાવો ગાળવાનું બનાસકાંઠામાં શરૃ કર્યું. શરત એટલી જ કે માટી ગામ ઉપાડે એ ઉપરાંત ફાળો આપવાનો. આ ફાળો ગામલોકો પોતાની મરજી મુજબ આપે. આ ફાળો પણ એમના ગામના તળાવ ગાળવામાં જ પાછો વપરાવવાનો પણ લોકો ફાળા માટે ઝટ રાજી થતા નથી.

ટ્રેક્ટર તો આપ્યા. હવે ફાળો કેમ?

હું કહુ છુ તમારા ગામનું તળાવ ગળાય એમાં તમારી હીસ્સેદારી નોંધાય માટે..

પણ બહુ અઘરુ છે કોઈના ખીસ્સામાંથી રૃપિયો કઢાવવો..

ગામમાં 300 ઘર હોય અને દરેક ઘર 500 તળાવ માટે આપે તોય ફાળો દોઢ લાખ થાય પણ આમ તેમ વાપરી નંખાતા 500 તળાવ જે સાર્વજનીક છે તેને સરખુ કરવા હું શું કામ આપું તેવું લોકો માને છે..

અરે ભાઈ તમારા ગામનું તળાવ છે. પાણી ભરાશે તો તમને જ ફાયદો થશે..

ખેર ઘણા ગામના સરપંચોના ફોન આવે છે તળાવ ગાળવા પણ ફાળાની વાતમાં સૌ મોળા પડે છે..

પણ કાંકરેજનું કુવારવા ગામ જરા નોખુ છે..

માટી ઉપાડવા ટ્રેકટર તો આપ્યા એ ઉપરાંત પચાસ હજારનો ફાળો આપ્યો. હજુ વધારે એકત્રીત કરવાની એમની ગણતરી છે. અમે આ ગામમાં તળાવ પાછળ પાંચ લાખ ખર્ચ કરીશું. સાથે તેમનો ફાળો જો એકાદ લાખ આવે તો છ લાખ તળાવ ખોદકામમાં વપરાશે..

ગામની ભાગીદારી હશે તો અમનેય કામ કરવું ગમશે.. કોઈને કહી શકીશું. ગામો જાગ્યા છે. સાવ ધર્માદુ લેવાની એમની ખેવના નથી ને સરકાર પર આધારિત નથી..

કુંવારવાની જેમ અન્ય ગામો જાગે એવી ભાવના....

Summer is just around the corner, the scorching heat and record-breaking temperatures will once again trigger our seasonal concern for water, trees, environment and all that results in rising temperatures.

However, even after back to back years of record heat we haven’t learnt to live the proverb, ‘a stitch in time saves nine’. We will continue to wait for others to address the issue. We worry about our home, our savings, bank balance and likes because it is not the government’s responsibility. Had it been their concern we would have stopped caring about that too!! Correct?

The environment is a shared legacy, protecting it is everyone’s concern. The summer heat will make all of us shout and make a noise of the efforts required to curtail those but once the rains arrive, the temperatures cool down and the downpour also cools down our tempo.

Since the past three years, VSSM has taken up the responsibility of doing its bit for environment protection, focusing on water conservation and restoration of traditional water sources.

The efforts to repair the community lakes in the villages was initiated in January and not May-June when summer is at its peak. We have been meeting the village leaders. In a recent meeting at Banaskantha’s Vada village in Kankrej block, we had a detailed discussion on why is it essential to contribute to these efforts of lake deepening. The JCB expenses are borne by VSSM, the excavated mud is picked up by the village community and the villagers contribute in cash for the maintenance of water sources. And it is not a very nominal amount of accumulated corpus we are seeking. The amount has to be considered so that the maintenance happens regularly and efficiently.

The communities in rural areas will benefit only when the lakes will deepen, and hold the rainwater into it. Why depend on government for all such needs. Yes, if it happens nothing like it but consider it an added benefit. Do what we have to do, whatever is our responsibility.

When one fails to protect common property resources they become history. There are numerous examples of lakes encroached upon and being used to farm. ‘once upon a time there was a lake here…’ we have heard this at countless places.


We are driving our efforts to include the villagers to take responsibility for their resources. We are reaching out to villagers, organising meetings to evoke this sense of responsibility and duty in them.

Lake Deeping Work

ઉનાળો શરૃ થશે એટલે આપણે સૌ ઝાડ, પાણી ટૂંકમાં પર્યાવરણની ચિંતા સેવવાનું શરૃ કરીશું.

પણ આપણી પેલી કહેવત પાણી પહેલાં પાળ બાંધવાનું આપણાથી બહુ થતું નથી. ઘર, બચત વગેરેનું આયોજન આપણે કરવું પડે એટલે એ કરીએ જો કે મને ક્યારેક થાય જો આ આયોજન પણ સરકાર કરી દેતી હોત તો આપણે એય કરવાની દરકાર કરીએ નહીં.

સાર્વજનીક સંપતિ એવા પર્યાવરણના જતનથી લઈને માવજત અંગે ઉનાળો શરૃ થતા વિચાર આવે અને બે ચાર મહિના તો ચારે બાજુ કુકવા કરીએ મુકીએ. પણ પછી વરસાદ પડે અને એના નીર ભેગી આપણી રાડારાડ વહી જાય. ટૂંકમાં ટાઢુ પાણી ફરી વળે.

અમે પર્યાવરણ જતન સંદર્ભે કેટલુંક નક્કર કરવાનું છેલ્લા ત્રણેક વર્ષથી અમારી નૈતિક જવાબદારી સમજીને કરી રહ્યા છીએ. જેમાંનું મુખ્ય જળ સંગ્રાહાલયોને પુનર્જીવીત કરવાનું છે.

ગામના તળાવો સાબદા કરવાનું અભિયાન મે – જુન મહિનામાં નહીં પણ જાન્યુઆરીથી આરંભવાનું નક્કી કર્યું અને તે સંદર્ભે ગ્રામજનો સાથે બેઠકો કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું છે.

બનાસકાંઠાના કાંકરેજ તાલુકાના વડામાં આવી બેઠક આયોજીત કરી અને ગામલોકોએ પોતાનું યોગદાન તળાવ ગાળવા કેમ આપવું એની વિસ્તારથી ચર્ચા થઈ.

તળાવ ગાળવા જેસીબી VSSM આપે, માટી ઉપાડવાનું કામ ગામલોકો પોતાના ટ્રેકટરોથી કરે આ ઉપરાંત ગામલોકો ફાળો ભેગો કરે. વળી આ ફાળો પાંચ પચીસ કે પચાસ હજાર નહીં પણ માતબર થાય એ માટે અમે કોશીશ કરી રહ્યા છીએ.

મૂળ તો તળાવ ગળાશે, પાણી ભરાશે તો ગામને જ ફાયદો થશે. વળી દરેક કામ સરકાર કરી આપે એવી આશા શું કામ રાખવાની. આપણી પોતાનીએ જવાબદારી છે. સરકાર કરે તો એ નફાનું એમ સમજવું પણ મારી જવાબદારી સમજી હું એમાં યોગદાન આપું તે થાય તે જરૃરી.

વળી આ થાય તો જ જાહેર સંપતિ એવા તળાવો સચવાશે બાકી તળાવ પુરીને ખેતી કરનારાના દાખલા ક્યાં ઓછા છે..

એક હતું તળાવ જેવી સ્થિતિ નિર્માણ ન પામે તે માટે અમે ગામલોકોની ભાગીદારી મહત્તમ તળાવ ખોદકામમાં આવે તે માટે પ્રયત્નશીલ છીએ અને એના જ ભાગરૃપે ગામલોકો સાથે બેઠકો તેમનો માંહ્યલો જગડાવા માટે કરી રહ્યા છીએ.

ત્રણ વર્ષ કરતા આ વર્ષે લોકભાગીદારીમાં સારો સહયોગ મળશે તેવું જણાઈ રહ્યું છે..

‘તારુ દીધેલું તુજને વળાવું’ ધરતી માને આવું કહેવાનો વખત આવી ગયો છે..

ઉપરોક્ત લખ્યા મુજબની અને એ સિવાયની ઘણી લાંબી પારાયણો ગામલોકો સાથે કરીએ એ અને વડાનું જે તળાવ ગાળવાનું છે એ બધુયે કેમેરામાં કેદ..

કાંકરેજનું વડાગામ તો જાગી ગયું પણ તમે જાગ્યા ????

“Ben, please deepen the lake in our village. We promise we shall offer best possible support and contribution!!”

Shri Arjunbhai Joshi, Sarpanch of Khorda village in Banaskantha’s Tharad block appealed us. Consequent to the request, a meeting with village leaders and community was organised.

We discussed how VSSM works in partnership with the village leadership and does not initiate any work without an agreement. 

The primary criteria for VSSM to take up the work of deepening village lakes are:

•     VSSM will only contribute towards the expenses of JCB incurred in the excavating the soil.

•     The soil will be ferried out by the villagers.

•     The community will also contribute in cash but the amount will not be used towards the cost incurred in ferrying the excavated soil.

Once the village leadership agrees to the mentioned conditions we proceed with further discussions and evaluations.

The first meeting for 2020 was organised at Korda village, where Sarpanch Shri Arjunbhai pledged personal contribution of Rs. 1,11,111, a staff of Panchayat also pledged his one month’s salary. Once the actual work begins we expect more contributions to pour in.

It is time we realise the gravity of the looming water crisis and collectively work to tackle it.

'અમારા ગોમમોં તળાવો ગાળો બેન, હારમ હારો સહકાર અમે ગોમના આલશ્....'

બનાસકાંઠાના થરાદના ખોરડાગામના સરપંચ શ્રી અર્જુનભાઈ જોષીએ આ કહ્યું અને ગામલોકો સાથે અમે એક બેઠકનું આયોજન કર્યું.

બેઠકમાં ઉપસ્થિતિ લોકોને અમે તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવા માટે ગામલોકોનો ફાળો પણ જોઈએ તેવી વાત કરી. મૂળ તો અમારા નિયમ પ્રમાણે જેસીબીનો ખર્ચ સંસ્થા આપે, માટી ઉપાડવાનું ગામના શીરે અને એ સિવાય ગામલોકો પૈસા ભેગા કરે જે તળાવ ગાળવામાં વપરાય. આ પૈસા માટી ઉપાડવામાં નહીં વાપરવા. આવા નિયમો સાથે સહમત ગામોમાં જ તળાવ કરવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું અને એ માટે આ વર્ષની શરૃઆતમાં થરાદના ખોરડ઼ાગામમાં અમે બેઠક કરી.

બેઠકમાં લોકો ભાગીદારીથી આ કામ કરવાની વાત કરી. ગામના સરપંચ અર્જુનભાઈએ રૃા. 1,11,111 તળાવ ગળાવવા પોતાના આપવાની જાહેરાત કરી તો, ગામના પંચાયતઘરમાં કામ શીરસ્તેદાર તરીકે કામ કરતા ભાઈએ પોતાનો એક પગાર આપવાની વાત કરી.

જો કે તળાવ ગાળવાનું હજુ શરૃ થયું નથી થશે એટલે સહકાર વધુ મળવાનો એ નક્કી...પણ દરેક ગામ જાગે અને પોતાની મા એવી ધરતીની ચિંતા કરે એ જરૃરી...

Mittal Patel discusses WaterManagement with villagers

The Sardar Sarovar Dam opened 25 gates this year….signalling it was full to its brim.

In the past whenever the dam overflowed a thought always crossed  my mind, “what if these waters were taken to the parched and thirsty lands of North Gujarat, Saurashtra, Kutchh!!”

The rain helped bring water to lake

Finally the  Chief Minister of Gujarat made an announcement in this regard. The Sujalam Sufalam Canal, Dantiwada Dam and the lakes that had the pipeline for Narmada waters have been filled up with waters from the majestic Narmada.

In Banaskantha people rejoiced like never before. The waters from Narmada as well as the rains showed mercy this year. Deep inside I was fearing the worst. But the rain gods finally gave in.

In the past three years VSSM has facilitated and supported deepening of 87 lakes in Banaskantha.

This year the rains helped bring water to few lakes. One of which is in Suigaum’s Katav village. The picture shared here is only for your reference so it the on the ongoing water sensitization meeting.  The video is of Adhgaum shared by Sureshbhai  this morning. Apart from the rainwater, Narmada waters have also reached the lake.

The rains have brought the much needed cheer in the air. And the Narmada waters filling up the lakes doubled the joy.

જ્યારે પણ ડેમ ઓવરફ્લો થતો ત્યારે એક વિચાર આવતો આ બધા પાણીને ઉત્તર ગુજરાત, સૌરાષ્ટ્ર અને કચ્છના નપાણિયા વિસ્તારમાં લઈ જવાનું થાય તો કેવું...
આખરે મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીએ આ અંગે જાહેરાત કરી..
સુજલામ સુફલામ કેનાલ, દાંતીવાડા ડેમ ઉપરાંત જે તળાવોમાં નર્મદા કેનાલની પાઈપ નાંખી હતી તે ભરવાનું સરકારે શરૃ કર્યું....

જો કે વરસાદે પણ લાજ રાખી.. બાકી મનમાં દુકાળ તો નહીં પડે એવો ભય પણ હતો...

જેમાંથી આ વરસાદમાં થોડા ભરાયા જેમાંનું સૂઈગામના કટાવનું એક હતું.. આ કટાવનું તળાવ અમે ખોદ્યું તે પહેલાંની સ્થિતિ ફોટોમાં સમજાય તે ખાતર મુકી છે.

વરસાદી પાણી ઉપરાંત સરકારે કેનાલથી આ તળાવને ભર્યું..

તળાવ ખોદાવતા પહેલાં ગામલોકો સાથે તળાવ કેમ ખોદાવવું તે સંદર્ભે અમે બેઠકો કરીએ આવી બેઠક અધગામમાં કરી તેનો ફોટો પણ સમજવા ખાતર મુક્યો ..

Mittal Patel meets villagers during lake deepening work

“On Navoni Agiyar, the entire village comes together to desilt, deepen and clean the village lakes!!”

Caring and nurturing the common property resources was the responsibility of all, the villagers ensured that all of these were well taken care of. Hence, there were certain days earmarked in a year when the villagers would collectively do the maintenance jobs required for up-keeping these resources.

This was shared to us by Bhagwanbhai, the Sarpanch of Sui village,  when we were working on deepening the lake in his village. A short video shares Bhagwanbhai’s enlightening talk, do find  time and listen to it. The wisdom behind these traditional practices is the reason the communities faced fewer challenges in the past.

All of us who understand the value of water, draw water from underground, have forgotten our duty to deepen the lakes that were instrumental in recharging the groundwater.

After a lot of convincing, meetings, discussions, hassles to sensitise people toward the need to conserve water and to contribute for preserving their resources we have deepened 70 lakes in Banaskantha with community participation and contribution. But 70 is nothing. There is a  need to upscale the efforts to do 1000s more.

The monsoon has arrived and we have suspended our task of deepening the lakes.

However, my humble request and advise is once the monsoon is over spare a day, come together, bring your tractors along, collect contribution to hire a JCB and deepen the lakes of your village. This is a task much crucial  and required than building temples.

If we decide to work 8 days in eight months the lakes will thrive and so would the life the  water  of these lakes support. If this

happens no one will need to say, “I don’t remember when was this lake last deepened!!” If we remain diligent there will be no need to teach our coming generations they will learn from observing us perform our responsibility.

VSSM’s Naran and Bhagwan are tirelessly working  to prepare and sensitise the village leaders and population. It is an honour to have them on our team.

 નવોણી અગિયારે આખુ ગામ તળાવ ખોદવાનું કામ પોતાની મેળે કરતું...

એવું સુઈગામના દુધવા ગામના સરપંચ ભગવાનભાઈએ કહ્યું. 

તેમના ગામમાં અમે તળાવ કર્યું એ વખતે તેમની સાથે થયેલી વાત વિડીયોમાં છે.. સમય કાઢી સાંભળજો.. ઘણું સમજાશે...

સરકાર કે કોઈ સંસ્થાની મદદ વગર ગામલોકો પોતાની રીતે આ કામ કરતા. 

પાણીનું મહત્વ સમજનારા આપણે લોકો આજે તળાવ ઊંડા કરવાની આપણી પોતાની જવાબદારી ભૂલી ગયા છીએ..

બનાસકાંઠામાં અમે 70 તળાવ ગામોને સાથે રાખી, તેમની સાથે માથાકૂટ કરી, તેમને સમજાવી લોકભાગીદારીથી કરી શક્યા પણ 70 થી કશુંયે ના થાય.

પેલું આભા ફાટ્યું છે ત્યાં થીંગડું ક્યાં દેવું એવો તકાજો છે..

ચોમાસું આવ્યું હવે તળાવ ગાળવાનું બંધ કર્યું. પણ ચોમાસા પછી મહિનામાં એક દિવસ પોતાના ટ્રેક્ટર અને ગામ ફાળો ભેગો કરીને જેસીબી લાવી પોતાના ગામનું તળાવ ગાળવાનું સૌ કરજો. આ તો મંદિર બાંધવા કરતાય મોટુ ધર્માદુ છે...

આઠ મહિનામાં આવી રીતે આઠ દિવસ કામ થશે તોય ખોદાયેલા તળાવોમાં જમા થયેલો કાંપ નીકળી જશે અને તળાવ તળાવ જેવા રહેશે.

પછી કોઈને કહેવું નહીં પડે કે અમને યાદ નથી અમારુ તળાવ ક્યારે ગળાયું હતું.. એ ગાળેલું જ દેખાશે...

આ કામ આપણે કરીશું.. તો આપણી પછીની પેઢીને તળાવનું મહત્વ સમજાવવુંયે નહીં પડે એ તો વધારોનો નફો... એ પોતાની આપણને જોઈને જ સમજી જશે...

દુધવા ગામમાં તળાવ ખોદાઈ રહ્યું તે વેળા ગામના સરપંચ અને અન્યોને મળવાનું થયું તેની તસવીર...

કાર્યકર નારણ અને ભગવાને ખુબ મહેનત કરી ગામોને સરસ રીતે તૈયાર કર્યા...આવા કાર્યકરો અમારી પાસે હોવાનો અમને ગર્વ છે..

VSSM facilitates the process of desilting and deepening of lakes in Sui’s Morwada village…

On the day of Navoni Agiyaras, our forefathers committed their labour to the benefit of the community. They never worked for themselves  on this day. The entire village, equipped with their tools would head over to excavate the mud from the lake and work through  the entire day. Those were the days when government aid or grants never existed, the community  volunteered to work for the greater good and benefit of others. In short, they cared for their own resources.

VSSM has been working towards widening and deepening the lakes in the villages on the periphery of the Greater Rann. The ever expanding Rann has made the ground water of all these villages very saline. These are the villages where one cannot even sink a bore well.

Bhagwanbhai, Sarpanch of Dudhwa village shared the above mentioned tradition with us, our forefathers were wise enough to value and care for natural resources that provided for all and how we have moved away from these values.  

Nonetheless, people who appreciate and value natural resources are striving to make a difference but the damage we have done is so huge that it is always going to be ‘more the merrier’…. We want humongous amount of people joining the force that works towards protection of environment.

Sui’s Morwada village has no potable water. The moment you go below 7-8 feet the waters are  saline.  Vikrambhai, the community leader from Morwada narrates, “Ben, if we accumulate  sweet water, it will push back the saline water and will decrease the salinity. So if we try digging three-four feet trenches over all the available space in the village it will help us catch more rain water and benefit us. The farmers too will be able to use it for farming,” he opined.

This underground salinity of the region forbids us from digging deep but one can always dig shallow and wide. We have excavated two lakes here, the community supported in ferrying away the soil. We also received government contribution for one of the lakes here.

The collective efforts of the community, organisation and government has resulted in deepening of lakes here. The villages here require more intense efforts, because availability of water has always been a challenge. The region receives water every four days. One will definitely learn to value  water and trees after travelling through this region.

નવોણી અગિયાસના દાડે અમારા ઘૈડિયા પોતાના સવારથું એકેય કોમ ના કરતા. અગિયારના દાડે ગાડામો તગારા, કોદાડી, પાવડા લઈન આખુ ઘર તળાવ ગાળવા જતું અન આખો દાડો તળાવમો મથતું. તે દાડે સરકારની કોઈ ગ્રોન્ટ બ્રાેન્ટ નતી. હૌ હાથે જ ગોમનું અન પોતાનું ધોન રાખતા.

બનાસકાંઠાના સુઈગામના રણને અડીને આવેલા અંતરિયાળ ગામો જ્યાં પાણી માટે બોરવેલ પણ શક્ય નથી એવા ગામોમાં અમે તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું કરી રહ્યા છીએ. આવા જ દુધવા ગામના સરપંચ ભગવાનભાઈએ અમને ઉપરની વાત કરી.

આપણા ઘૈડિયા ઝાડથી લઈને તળાવો ટૂંકમાં કહુ તો કુદરતી સંસાધનોનું જતન કરતા પણ આપણે એમના આ સંસ્કારો ભૂલી ગયા.

ખેર જેને સમજાય છે એ પોતાની રીતે પ્રયત્નો કરે છે પણ આ પ્રયત્નોમાં વધુ માણસો જોડાય તો સોનામાં સુગંધ ભળે.

સુઈગામનું મોરવાડા છ થી સાત ફૂટ ઊંડા જાવ એટલે ખારુ પાણી મળે. મોરવાડાના આગેવાન વિક્રમભાઈ કહે, 'બેન મીઠુ પાણી ભરાય તો ખારા પાણીને ધક્કો લાગે અને ખારાશ ઘટે. એટલે અમારા વિસ્તારમાં પડેલી ખુલ્લી તમામ જગ્યા ત્રણ થી ચાર ફુટ ખોદાઈ જાય અને તેમાં વરસાદી પાણી ભરાય તો અમને ઘણો ફાયદો થાય. ખેડુ આ પાણીથી ખેતી પણ કરી શકે.'

આ વિસ્તારમાં ઊંડા તળાવો ના થાય પણ પહોળા જેટલા કરવા હોય એટલા થાય. અમે ગામમાં બે તળાવો ખોદ્યા. ગામે પણ માટી ઉપાડવાનું પોતાના શીરે લીધું.

એક તળાવમાં તો સરકારે પણ ભાગીદારી કરી. ટૂંકમાં ગામલોકો, સંસ્થા અને સરકારના સંયુક્ત પ્રયાસોથી ગામના તળાવ ઊંડા થયા.

પણ આ વિસ્તારોમાં પાણીના કામોની ખુબ જરૃર છે. ચાર દિવસે પીવાનું પાણી આવે છે... આ વિસ્તારમાં ફરીયે ત્યારે પાણી અને ઝાડનું મુલ્ય વધુ સમજાય...

ફોટોમાં ગાળેલા બે તળાવ જોઈ શકાય છે.. તથા ગામલોકો સાથે તળાવના મહત્વ બાબતે પણ વિસ્તારથી વાત કરેલી તેની ઝલક પણ જોઈ શકાય છે.

“The lake in our village was excavated during the great famine of Gujarat after which,  no one has really cared for it. Our village depends on the water this lake provides. But no none has really bothered to nourish it. If we repair and deepen the lake it will hold more water and the farmers will benefit from it!!”

Rampura’s Dharmeshbhai had joy in his tone when he mentioned this when we shared that VSSM will soon initiate the water conservation work in Rampura.

As part of the implementation strategy, VSSM makes it very clear from the beginning that the work will happen only if the village panchayat and leaders are willing to cooperate and contribute to the mammoth task of deepening the village lakes. We have had mixed experiences. Some villages have been extremely enthusiastic and supportive while some had to be dropped  half way through.

Rampura is a remote village from  Banaskantha’s Sui block. The landscape is dry and harsh. As the waters of Narmada reach this village, some farmers have made use of it and occasional green spots could be  noticed through the landscape. The villagers were willing to contribute in their own way to this task. Hence, we have decided to deepen at 5-6 villages in Rampura.

The support for this huge task is provided by Shri Bhanuben Shah,  who is currently  based in Mumbai.

The villagers of Rampura agree that the village receives a lot of water during the monsoon but it just gets drained as there is no means of conservation. Once the lakes are deepened the water will seep-in and benefit the entire village.

Of course the village will benefit,  so will this earth and its habitants. A task that began with one village is gradually spreading through the entire district with more and more villages joining in.

'અમાર ગોમનું તળાવ પચીહો કાળ પડ્યો તે વખતે ખંદાયેલું એ પછી કોઈએ તળાવની ભાળ જ કાઢી નઈ. ગોમમાં પોણીનો મોટો આશરો તળાવ જ. તળાવ ખંદાય અન હરખુ પોણી રેતો આખા ગોમના ખેડૂન ઘણો ફાયદો થાય.'

રામપુરાના ધર્મેશભાઈએ તળાવ ખોદાવવાની બાબતે હરખ વ્યક્ત કરતા આ વાત કરેલી.

ગામલોકોનો સહયોગ મળે તોજ તળાવ ગાળશું એવું દરેક ગામના તળાવ ખોદાવતી વખતે કહીએ. ઘણા ગામોમાં ખુબ સહયોગ મળે ને ઘણામાં અમારે કામ અઘુરુ મુકીને નીકળી જવું પડે.

#સૂઈગામ તાલુકાનું અંતરિયાળગામ એટલે #રામપુરા. વિસ્તાર સૂકો. હા કેટલાક ખેડૂત નર્મદા કેનાલનું પાણી લાવ્યા છે એટલે જરા હરિયાળુ લાગે બાકી સૂકો ભઠ્ઠ વિસ્તાર.છતાં ગામલોકો પોતાની રીતે મદદ કરવા તૈયાર. આ ગામના પાંચ થી છ તળાવ ઊંડા કરવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું છે.

મુંબઈના શ્રી ભાનુબહેન શાહ મુખ્ય મદદ કરવાના છે.

એ સિવાય સરકાર, ગામલોકોનો ફાળો પણ મહત્વનો રહેશે.

રામપુરાના લોકો કહે છે કે, ચોમાસામાં ઉપર વાસથી અમારા ગામમાં ઘણું પાણી આવે પણ તળાવ ઊંડા નથી એટલે પાણી વહી જાય છે. જો તળાવ ઊંડા થઈ જાય તો ઘણું પાણી એમાં સમાઈ જાય ને ગામને ફાયદો થાય.

ગામને ફાયદો થાય, ધરતી માતાને અને સમગ્ર જીવસૃષ્ટિને ફાયદો થાય તેવા આશય સાથે આરંભેલા આ કામમાં ધીમે ધીમે લોકો અને ગામો જોડાઈ રહ્યા છે...

“Ben, when will you deepen the lake in our village?”

This was one constant question that Bhanabhai, the Sarpanch of Makhanu village and Ashokbhai, a young journalist from the village would keep asking VSSM’s Naran and me over the phone. They never stopped following up.

“We too want to do that and will do that but can we first discuss about the contribution the villagers are prepared to make?” we would respond.

“Ben, it is difficult for make people contribute for such works, but we shall definitely do something, can you first begin deepening the lake?” Bhanabhai would respond.

Respecting Bhanabhai’s statement and commitment we decided to begin the work of deepening and desilting the lake at Makhanu village and talk to the villagers on the matter of community contribution. The meeting was held over the hardly existent lake and the first to contribute was Bhanabhai Sarpanch, the villagers followed giving as much as they could. Apart from VSSM and the community we also received government’s contribution for the mentioned task. Although we would have loved the villagers to be more giving towards such work that is for the betterment of the entire community. We all acknowledge the fat that as a society we become more giving when it comes to building places of worship, however the same generosity is never reflected in works that are for the society in general. We depend on our lakes/water bodies and tree/forests, yet we hardly care about them. This is a bitter truth we at VSSM deal with every day.

We have envisaged a green and water sufficient Banaskantha, we are committed to realise that and that is why we will take the liberty of expecting the people of Banaskantha to be more giving.

The lake we were to deepen and desilt was encroached upon and filled up. However, the persistence the Bhalabhai and Ashokbhai showed needs to be applauded at this juncture.

'બેન અમારા ગામનું તળાવ ક્યારે ગાળશો?'

આ વિધાન સાથે મખાણુંગામના #સરપંચ ભાણાભાઈ અને ગામના યુવા પત્રકાર અશોકભાઈના ઢગલો ફોન કાર્યકર નારણ અને મારા પર આવ્યા કરે.

અમે કહેતા કે, 'તળાવ તો અમારેય ગાળવું છે પણ એ પહેલાં ગામલોકો પોતે પણ ફાળો આપે.'

સરપંચ કહે, 'ગુંજામોંથી ધર્માદા કોમ હાતર પૈસા કઢાવવા તો અઘરા. પણ કોક કરશું બેન તમે તળાવનું કોમ એક ફેરા શરૃ તો કરાવો.'

સરપંચના એ વિધાન પર અમે તળાવનું કામ શરૃ કરાવ્યું અને મખાણું ગામના લોકોને ભેગા કરીને ફાળાની વાત કરવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું. ગામલોકો તળાવમાં જ ભેગા થયા સરપંચે પોતાનું અનુદાન પ્રથમ આપ્યું ને પછી તો ગામના સૌએ પોતાનાથી શક્ય આપ્યું.

જે #તળાવ અમે ગાળવાનું શરૃ કર્તયું તે તળાવમાં દબાણ થઈ ગયેલું, તળાવ પણ પુરાઈ ગયેલું. આ તળાવ ગાળવામાં ગામનો ફાળો, vssmનો ફાળો અને સરકારની પણ મદદ મળી.

જો કે ગામલોકો વધુ ફાળો આપે તેવી અપેક્ષા છે પણ મંદિર બાંધવા આપણે જેટલી લાગણી બતાવીએ એટલી તળાવ માટે નથી. એ કડવી વાસ્તવીકતા છે. તળાવ એ આપણો આધાર છે પણ લોકોને એની ચિંતા નથી..

ખેર અમે એમ કાંઈ મુકવાના નથી. બનાસકાંઠાને હરિયાળુ પાણીથી ભરપુર બનાવવાનો સંકલ્પ છે તે ગામલોકો પર થોડો અધિકારભાવ પણ જતાડવો પડશે....

પણ #બનાસકાંઠાના સૌ લોકો સહયોગ આપે એવી અપેક્ષા પણ રાખુ છું....

બાકી #મખાણું ગામના લોકો, સરપંચ શ્રી ભાણાભાઈ તથા અશોકભાઈને તો પ્રણામ કરવા ઘટે.

"Blessed are those who can undertake such noble works of building lakes and watersheds. You have taken up  an extremely  important task. Our entire region is dry, water is hard to find  through the year. If we deepen this lake all our animals, birds and people will benefit from it. Although we have drinking water pipeline,  we face water scarcity on the days when water does not reach us through pipes. Every a  single day without water is a struggle. A million thanks to the donors who have decided to support such good deeds. All of you who are part of such pious offering will be truly blessed.”

I was delighted to hear this from Ratansinhdada of Khadolgaum in Suigaum. The underground water in this region is available only after 150 feet and that too is salty. Farmers have drilled borewells as deep as 1000 feet and those borewells too are increasingly failing.

In the past people depended on lakes for their potable water needs but these days drinking water reaches these villages through pipelines. However, when that fails to happen at certain times they need to rely on other sources for water.

During the meeting with the village elders to discuss the lake deepening we talked about village contribution and community participation. VSSM will provide JCB for excavating the mud but the mud will need to be lifted and cleared by the villagers. It was insisted that this effort will need 50-50 partnership and VSSM would be pleased if the works  receive the required contribution from   Sarpanch  Kajabhai said, “Ben, we will not disappoint you. Here are Rs. 51,000 as my contribution to the work. Others also started contributing and the amount reached 1.25 lac for now, the amount which is expected to swell up soon.”the villagers. On hearing this,It is important that communities wake up to the idea of building their own villages. It has really touched my heart when the leaders of Khadol talked and acted with such responsibility. My heartfelt gratitude to them.

Our team members Naran and Bhagwan need a special mention for their hard-work and passion. It isonly they who have identified such committed villages.A huge thank you to our well-wishing friends for their support.

'તમે ખુબ મહત્વનું કોમ કરી ર્યા સો. વાવ, તળાવ ગળાવવા એ ધરમનું કોમ. ભાગશાળી મોણસો તળાવ ખોદાવ અન પરબો બંધાવ. પણ તળાવ ગળાવવું એ તો પરબોથી પણ મહાન કોમ. અમારો આખો વિસ્તાર સુકો ભઠ્ઠ. બારે મહિના પોણી ના મલ. આ તળાવ ગળાય તો પશુ, પોમર મુનષ જીવ એ બધાય ન પોણી મલ. હવ તો પીવાના પોણીની સરકારે લાઈન આલીહ પણ એ કોક દાડો બંધ રે તો આખા ગોમમાં મુઢે પીવા પોણી ના મલ. એક દિવસ ચકલુ(નળ) બંધ થાય તો પોણી વના પોણીના પુરા ટળવળે ઈમ અમે મોણસ ટળવળીએ. પણ ધન ધન ને અભીનંદન દાતાઓન. જીમને તળાવ ગળાવવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. પોણીની ભયંકર તકલીફવાળા વિસ્તારોમાં એક તળાવ ગળાય તો યજ્ઞથી પણ મોટુ પુન મલ. આ પુન નિમત્ત બનવાવાળા તમન બધાન મલશે.'

સુઈગામનું ખડોલગામના રતનસીંહ દાદાએ આ કહ્યું. સાંભળીને રાજી થવાયું. દોઢસે ફૂટે ખારુ પાણી મળે. પાછુ દોઢસો ફૂટ સુધીનું તળ સાવ ખાલી. કેટલાક ખેડુતોએ હજાર ફૂટ ઊંડા બોરવેલ કર્યા છે. પણ એ ફેઈલ થવાનું ઘણું થાય.

પહેલાં તો પીવાનું પાણીએ ગામલોકો આ તળાવમાંથી લેતા. પણ હવે પાઈપથી પીવાનું પાણી મળે છે પણ ના મળે તો તળાવના આધારે રહેવાનું.

ગામનું પોતાનું તળાવ ગળાય તો ગામે સહભાગીતા દાખવવી જોઈએ એવું અમે કહીએ. ખડોલમાં પણ આ સબબ બેઠક થઈ. જો કે માટી ખોદકામ માટે જેસીબી અમે આપીએ બાકી માટી ઉપાડવાનું ગામના જ શીરે. આમ પચાસ ટકાની ભાગીદારીથી જ કામ થાય છતાં ગામનો આર્થિક સહયોગ તળાવ ખોદાવવા માટે મળે તો અમે રાજી થઈશું એવો ભાવ પ્રેમપૂર્વક ગામસામે વ્યક્ત કર્યોને સરપંચ શ્રી કાજાભાઈએ કહ્યું, 'બેન તમને નિરાશ નહીં કરીએ. લો એકાવન હજાર મારા તરફથી' ને બીજા બધાયે કીધુ અમે સવા દોઢ લાખ અને થશે તો એનાથીયે વધારે ફાળો કરીશું.

સાંભળીને ખુબ રાજી થઈ. મારુ ગામ મને ગમે એવું હું જ બનાવું એ વાત સૌની ભાગીદારી થાય તો જ સાચી થાય.

કાર્યકર નારણ ને ભગવાન એમની લગનને તો સલામ જ કરવી પડે. એમણે જ આવા સુંદરગામો ને શોધ્યા છે...
