We were visiting Dholka’s Badarkha to meet Pintuben and her two brothers. However, we could not overlook the condition of the entire settlement. The families here have been living in hutments on government land for many years. After making several appeals, they have been looking forward to receiving residential plots from the government, but this hasn’t moved in their favor. According to them, monsoons in the settlement are incredibly challenging.

VSSM has also been engaging with concerned authorities on allotting land to these families. We are hopeful that very soon, they will receive land.

Pintuben and her brothers are mentally challenged. The siblings have been looked after by their eldest brother and people in the neighborhood. However, since everyone in the neighborhood work as manual labor, sometimes timely meals become a challenge.

After understanding the living condition of these siblings, we discussed the way forward with the families in the settlement. The recommendation was to provide meals to the three.

Since the siblings cannot cook for themselves, we requested Dhirajbahen, a resident of the same village to send them a daily tiffin. However, the entire effort of cooking and bringing food to their doorstep is time-consuming, which VSSM was not going to compensate fully. ‘We don’t do any charity; this is our way of helping others!” Dhirajbahen’s husband opined.

The village folks took good care of Pintubahen and her brothers. The hut she calls home was replaced by a lovely house constructed by the good samaritans of the village.

It also took a lot of effort to find one of the missing brothers. However, it is not just the village; the neighborhood is equally compassionate. Usually, I get told to send such exceptional cases to an Ashram, but when I recommended the same here, the entire neighborhood refused to let them go. “Who will look after them in such a facilitiy? Here at least, we can keep an eye on them,”  was the collective response. Such instances cheer us up and keep our trust in humanity alive. 

ધોળકાનું #બદરખા.. આમ તો અમે પિન્ટુબેન અને એમના બે ભાઈઓને મળવા ગયેલા. પણ ત્યાં પહોંચ્યા પછી આખી વસાહતની સ્થિતિ જોઈ. 

સરકારી જમીન પર કાચા- પાકા મકાન કરીને આ પરિવારો વર્ષોથી રહે. એમને પોતાની જગ્યા મળે એની ઘણી હોંશ. એ માટે રજૂઆત પણ કરી પણ મેળ પડે નહીં. વસાહતના લોકોના કહેવા પ્રમાણે ચોમાસામાં ઘણી મુશ્કેલી પડે. 

આવા પરિવારોને પોતાની જગ્યા મળે તે માટે અમે પ્રયત્નો કરીએ. અને એ માટે રજૂઆત પણ કરી છે. આગળના દિવસોમાં એ દિશામાં નક્કર કામ થશે તેવી આશા છે. 

ખેર પિન્ટુબેન ને એમના બે ભાઈ માનસીક રીતે વિકલાંગ. એમના મોટાભાઈ અને શેરીના સૌ એમની કાળજી કરે. પણ શેરીમાં સૌ મજૂરી પર નભવાવાળા. આવામાં ક્યારેક ટાણુ સચવાય ન સચવાય. અમને આ ત્રણે ભાઈ બહેનની સ્થિતિનો ખ્યાલ આવ્યો.વસાહતના લોકો સાથે શું કરવું તે અંગે વાત થઈ. સૌએ એમને બે ટંક જમવાનું આપવાની વાત કરી. 

ત્રણે ભાઈ બહેનની સ્થિતિ એવી કે જાતે રાંધી ન શકે. અમે ગામના ધીરજબહેનને કહ્યું ને એમણે ત્રણે ભાઈ બહેનનું ટીફીન બનાવી આપવાનું સ્વીકાર્યું. આમ તો ટીફીન રોજ ઘરે પહોંચાડવું એ કાંઈ સહેલું નહીં વળી અમે કાંઈ બહુ મોટુ વળતર પણ ન આપીયે. પણ ધીરજબહેનના પતિ કહે, આપણાથી આમ સેવા નથી. આ બહાને આપણે સેવા ગામના લોકો પણ એમને સરસ સાચવે. પિન્ટુબહેન જ્યાં રહેતા તે છાપરુ જેમાં ટાઢ, તડકો વરસાદ ન રોકાય. તે ગામના એક મિત્ર મંડળે ભેગા મળીને સરસ ઘર બનાવી આપ્યું. 

એક ભાઈ ખોવાઈ ગયો તો ગામે ભારે જહેમત ઉઠાવી એને શોધી કાઢ્યો. ગામની સાથે શેરીના લોકો પણ એવા જ. ઘણા લોકો મને કહે, માનસીક અવસ્થા જેની નબળી પડી હોય તેમને આશ્રમમાં મુકી દો. ત્યાં એ સચવાય. મે અહીંયા આ ત્રણે ભાઈ બહેનને આશ્રમમાં મુકવા કહ્યું તો શેરીના લોકોએ ના પાડી. એમણે કહ્યું, અહીંયા અમારી સામે હોય તો અમે થોડું ઘણું ધ્યાન આપી શકીએ. પણ ત્યાં તો એમનું કોણ?

એકદમ સરસ ભાવથી એમણે આ કહ્યું. આ માનવતા. આ બધુ જોવું, સાંભળુ ત્યારે રાજી થવાય.

 “No one was willing to marry their daughters with our sons!”

“Why?” I had wondered as you would after hearing this statement.

“We  lacked  pucca houses to stay in; who wants to send daughters to impoverished mud houses with tethered roofs?”

The Raval families of Patan’s Mitha Dharva village have been staying here on government wasteland in houses built of mud and straw. The families lack funds to buy land they could own. VSSM’s Mohanbhai was in contact with these families and understood their apathy. He helped them file applications for allotment of residential plots. The district Collector of Patan, Shri Anand Patel, is very compassionate human being; he immediately sanctioned plots for these families.

“We have been requesting for years, have rubbed off numerous  soles of our footwear, but the plots remained elusive.” Harjibhai shared.

It took constant follow-ups on the part of VSSM’s Mohanbhai, who would visit the collector’s office regularly. The administration was also sensitive toward these families, and the Sarpanch remained proactive. However, it took all these collective efforts for the Raval families to receive plots and aid to build houses over the plots.

As we always convey, the Rs. 1.20 lacs the government sanctions for the construction of a house is insufficient to support the construction cost of a decent home.

“Building a house happens once in a lifetime; hence we want to build a good one!” Harjibhai and others from the settlement opined. So the families began building their homes by drawing money from their savings or borrowing when they did not have enough. There would also be a time when the construction would pause because their reserves ran dry. But they managed to finish the construction and build houses big enough to meet the needs of growing families. It felt good to see the constructed, thoughtfully finished homes.

We will continue to persevere to get such homeless families their safe places. A home is a cocoon that one needs to rest a tired soul and rejuvenate to keep going.

We are grateful for our team, which does terrific work in their respective regions. For example, in Patan, Mohanbhai works hard to find needy families and link them with government welfare schemes.

I am grateful to Shri Pratulbhai Shroff for his generous support in keeping our team running; it wouldn’t have been possible any other way.

'અમારા છોકરાંઓને છોકરીઓ આપવા કોઈ રાજી નહોતું..'આ વાક્ય સાંભળીને આવું કેમ એ પ્રશ્ન સૌ કોઈને થાય.. મનેય થયો.. જેની ચોખવટ કરતા હરજીભાઈએ કહ્યું;  'રહેવા પાક્કુ ઘર નહીં, છાપરાંમાં કે માટીના કાચા બનાવેલા ઘરમાં રહીએ એમાં છોકરી દેવાનું કોણ કરે?'

વાત છે પાટણના મીઠા ધરવા ગામની. વર્ષોથી રાવળ પરિવારોગામની સરકારી જમીન પર રહે. પોતાની માલીકીની જમીન ખરીદવા તેમની પાસે પૈસા નહીં. 

અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈ આ પરિવારોના સંપર્કમાં. એમણે આ પરિવારોની ઘર નહોવાની દુવિધા સમજી અને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફળવાય તે માટે કલેક્ટર શ્રી આનંદ પટેલને અરજી કરી.

આનંદભાઈ એકદમ સંવેદનશીલ એમણે તુરત ..... પરિવારોને પ્લોટ ફળવાયા. 

હરજીભાઈ કહે, 'આ ઈતિહાસ હતો બેન. અમે વર્ષોથી પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે રજૂઆત કરતા પણ અમારા ચંપલ ઘસાઈ ગયા.'

VSSMના કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈનુ કલેક્ટર કચેરીમાં સતત ફોલોઅપ ને અધિકારીઓની પણ લાગણી, માટે આ પ્લોટ મંજૂર થયા. ને મકાન બાંધવા સહાય પણ મળી. ગામના સરપંચે પણ આમાં ઘણી મદદ કરી. 

મકાન સહાય તો 1.20 લાખ મળે આમાં સરખુ ઘર કેવી રીતે બંધા?. હરજીભાઈ ને વસાહતના અન્ય કહે, ઘર એક વખત જ બાંધવાનું. આમ પોતાની બચત ક્યાંક ઉછીના પાછીના ક્યાંક થોડા પૈસા ભેગા થાય ને થોડુ ઘર બાંધે પૈસા ખુટે એટલે વિરામ લે અને વળી પાછા પૈસા ભેગા થાય એટલે પાછુ શરૃ કરે. આમ ધીમે ધીમે આ પરિવારોએ ઘર બાંધવાના શરૃ કર્યા. 

પણ એમણે બાંધેલા ઘર જોઈને રાજી થવાય. લાંબુ વિચારીને એમણે ભવિષ્યમાં દિકરા વહુ આવે તો એમના માટે અલગ આયોજન થઈ શકે એ રીતે બાંધ્યા. હમણાં મીઠા ધરવા જવાનું થયું. બંધાઈ રહેલા અને ક્યાંક બંધાતા ઘરો જોઈને રાજી થવાયું. ઘર એ પગને વિશ્રામ આપે. આગળ વધવાની ધગશ પણ એનાથી થાય. બસ આવા ઘરવિહોણા મહત્તમ લોકોને ઘર મળે તે માટે આગળ પણ મથ્યા કરીશું. અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈનો આભાર. આવા જરૃરિયાતવાળા માણસોને શોધી તેમને સરકારીની યોજનાઓ સુધી પહોંચાડવાનું કરવું પણ બહુ અગત્યનું.આવા કાર્યો કરી શકીએ તે માટે મદદ કરનાર આદરણીય પ્રતુલભાઈ શ્રોફની આભારી છું. તેઓ અમારી ટીમની દોડતી રાખવામાં મદદ કરે..

Mittal Patel visits Bajaniya settlement in Surendranagar

The second wave of the Pandemic caught took me in its embrace, and what a strong embrace it was. I remained very sick during the bout. But with your prayers and good wishes, I recovered entirely.

VSSM’s Kanubhai had wished to bring me to visit the Hadakwai Mata after I was out of the woods. And this obedience had to be paid.

Kanubhai and many leaders of Surendranagar’s Bajaniya community wanted me to come to visit their settlements once. Hence, along with offering my prayers and gratitude and intending to find remedies to their issues, I also met the Bajaniya leaders and community members of Gavana village.

Many daughters from their region had stayed with VSSM’s hostel,  finished studying, and went on to enroll for the degree course in nursing. One of them has also found a job at a private hospital. Some have secured admission in engineering courses after finishing schooling up till 12th grade. After witnessing the growth of these children, the community wanted their children to come and stay with VSSM-operated hostels. Bajaniya community demamding facilies for educating their children is a massive step forward. I am delighted to witness this change in their otherwise orthodox and rigid mindsets

The community members also requested financial assistance to help them begin small ventures. They drew inspiration from the families of Vadhiyar, who had found financial stability after seeking interest-free loans and financial guidance from VSSM.

If a community can apprehend that educational and economic stability are the two most empowering elements in an individual’s life, it is bound to set out on the path of progress and well-being.

There was also a discussion about homes for the homeless, we assured that VSSM would continue to voice the plight of these families and ensure they have access to government benefits.

I love this sense of awareness amongst these communities. It is an honor to receive their love and appreciation.

કોરોનાની બીજી લહેર વખતે નહોતો બોલાવ્યો તોય કોરોના મારા ઘરમાં પેઠો...મારી હાલત બહુ ખરાબ.

પણ અસંખ્ય લોકોની પ્રાર્થનાથી આજે હેમખેમ.. અમારા કનુભાઈએ તબીયત સારી થઈ જાય તો ગવાણા હડકવઈ માના દર્શન કરવા મને લઈને જશેની માનતા માનેલી..

એમની આ લાગણી અને પ્રેમ માટે આભારી..

માનતા માની હતી તે પુરી કરવાની જ હોય...

વળી કનુભાઈ અને ખારાપાટ- સુરેન્દ્રનગરના અમારા બજાણિયા સમુદાયના આગેવાનોની ઈચ્છા પણ એમના વિસ્તારમાં એમની વસાહતોની મુલાકાત લઉ એવી. તે માનતા પુર્ણ કરવાની સાથે ગવાણામાં રહેતા બજાણિયા પરિવારો સાથે તેમની મુશ્કેલીઓમાં અમે કેવી રીતે ભાગીદાર થઈ શકીએ તે અંગે વાત થઈ.

એમના વિસ્તારની દીકરીઓ અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણી આજે નસર્ગીનો ડીગ્રી કોર્સ કરવા આગળ ગઈ તો રાજલ ને હારીજમાં જ એક હોસ્પીટલમાં નોકરી મળે. કેટલાક બાળકો અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં 12 ધો. ભણ્યા પછી એન્જીન્યરીંગ ભણવા આગળ ગયા. આ બધા બાળકોની પ્રગતિ જોઈ અમારા બાળકોને પણ હોસ્ટેલમાં પ્રવેશ આપોની વાત સૌએ કરી. આ સાંભળીને તો સૌથી વધારે રાજી થવાયું..

આ સિવાય નાના મોટા કામ ધંધા કરવા આર્થિક મદદ કરોની પણ લોકોએ વાત કરી. જે રીતે વઢિયારમાં લોન લઈને ઘણા પરિવારો બે પાંદડે થયા અદ્લ એ રીતે જ અમારે થવું છે એવી વાત થઈ. 

આર્થિક અને શૈક્ષણિક સદ્ધરતા માણસની સ્થિતિ બદલી નાખે છે અને આ બે બાબતે સમાજ વિચારતો થાય તો એની પ્રગતિ પણ ઝટ થવાની એ નક્કી..

એ પછી વાત થઈ ગવાણામાં રહેતા કેટલાક ઘરવિહોણા વ્યક્તિઓની. એ પરિવારોને ઘર અને સરકારની યોજનાઓની મદદ મળે તે માટે તો અમારે મથવાનું જ..

તેમની જાગૃતિ ગમી અને પ્રેમ તો પહેર્યા પાથરે એવો... આ પ્રેમને માથે ચડાવ્યો...

અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઇ, કનુભાઈ અને હર્ષદ ખાસ જવાબદારી લઈને કામ કરવા હાજર રહ્યા...

Within 15 days of husbands passing away, widowed wives walking out of their marital homes and leaving behind their small children can be heart-wrenching, isn't it?

I found it difficult to believe when Vinodbhai,  my team member, shared the above. But when he took me to Panchmahal's Gajapura village of Ghoghamba block to meet Alsingbhai and his wife Manjuben and listen to this painful incident in their own words, I found it difficult to believe. 

Alsinghbhai's two elder brothers met with an accident when traveling on their motorbike. The brothers died on the spot. Together these brothers had five children, and the youngest was still on mother's milk.

Losing two sons came as a devastating blow for the family. Alsingbhai was the youngest, and along with his father he tried to take care of the situation, however, wives of both the brothers walked out of the house in less than 15 days of their death. They did not even choose to take the children along. One took the breastfed daughter along, but when Alsingbhai offered to raise the infant, his Bhabhi left her without second thoughts.

"Now consider me their kaka or father; they are my responsibility now!" Alsingbhai shared this poignant truth.

And it is not just Alsingbhai; even his wife has risen to the occasion and accepted these children as her own.

When Vinod learned about this situation, he immediately filled up forms for Palak Mata-Pita Scheme to help ease the financial burden on Alsingbhai's shoulders. The amount has begun arriving in the children's account, but Alsingbhai has not used a single penny from that amount. "It is children's money; I have no right over it!" Alsingbhai replied in all honesty.

"Didi, both mothers have remarried. I learned about this situation when I met them to get the forms signed. There is a precondition that if the mother is alive but refuses to take care of the children, as she has remarried, we need to attach surviving parent's re-marriage certificate as proof along with the application form. In the absence of this signed document, the benefits under the scheme do not commence. I visited the mothers to get the document signed, but the ladies refused to sign the forms. They did not want Alsingbhai to benefit from it." Vinod shared these details while I was still trying to comprehend how can a mother leave her small children behind and walk away! 

I was at a loss for words! I could not believe How a mother could be so stone-hearted.

Eventually, Vinod had to seek support from community elders to resolve the issue. The documents were signed, and children began receiving financial support under the Palak- Mata Pita scheme.

પતિ ગુજરી ગયાના પંદર દિવસમાં જ પત્ની સાસરીયું એ પણ નાના બાળકોને નોંધારા મુકી ત્યજી દે એ વાત જ કાળજુ કંપાવનારી લાગે ને?

અમારા કાર્યકર વિનોદે મને જ્યારે આ કહ્યું ત્યારે પ્રથમ તો હું પણ મા આવું કરે એ વાત માનવા તૈયાર નહીં. પણ પછી વિનોદ મને પંચમહાલના ઘોઘંબા તાલુકાના ગજાપુરાગામ લઈ ગયો ને હું મળી અલસીંગભાઈ અને તેમના પત્ની મંજુબહેનને અને એમના મોંઢેથી બધુ સાંભળીને નવાઈ લાગી.

વાત જાણે એમ બની. અલસીંગભાઈના બે મોટાભાઈ બાઈક પર ક્યાંક જઈ રહ્યા હતા ને વચમાં અકસ્માત થયો. બે ભાઈઓનું ઘટના સ્થળે જ મૃત્યુ થયું. આ બેઉ ભાઈને મળીને કુલ પાંચ સંતાન. 

પરિવાર પર તો મૃત્યુના સમાચાર સાંભળી આભ ફાટ્યા જેવું થયું. નાના પાંચ બાળકોમાં એક દીકરી તો હજુ ધાવતી. અલસીંગભાઈ બેઉ ભાઈ પછી સૌથી નાના. એમણે ને એમના પિતાએ બધુ સંભાળવા કોશીશ કરી. પણ પતિની ચિતા હજુ બરાબર ઠરીએ નહોતી ને બેઉ ભાઈની પત્નીઓ બાળકોને મુકીને જતી રહી. હા ધાવતી દીકરીને મા સાથે લઈ ગઈ પણ અલસીંહભાઈ કહે, "નાનકી સિવાયના ચારેય નાના જ હતા ને એમની એમને નહોતી પડી તો પછી નાનકી માટે દયા શું કામ ખાવી. મે ભાભી પાસે જઈને કહ્યું, તમારે નાનકી ને ન રાખવી હોય તે એ પણ આપી દો, હું ઉછેરીશ. ને એમણે કશીયે દલીલ વગર આપી દીધી. 

બસ હવે હું જ એનો બાપ ક્યો તો એ ને કાકા ક્યો તો એ..."

અલસીંગભાઈ તો ભાઈ હતા એ બાળકોને સાચવવાનું નક્કી કરે પણ એમના પત્નીએ પણ પાંચેય બાળકોને પોતાના કર્યા.

અમારા વિનોદના ધ્યાને આખો કિસ્સો આવતા એણે પાલક માતા પિતા ફોર્મ આ બાળકો માટે ભરાવ્યા જેથી અલસિંગભાઈને ટેકો રહે. 

બાળકોને સહાય મળતી થઈ ગઈ. પણ આજ સુધી અલસીંગભાઈએ એક રૃપિયો પણ બાળકોના નામે સરકારમાંથી આવેલો વાપર્યો નથી. એ પૈસા તો બાળકોના મારો એમાં હક ન લાગે એવું એ કહે.

હું જ્યારે અલસિંગભાઈ અને બાળકોને મળી ત્યારે આવા કુમળા છોડ જેવા બાળકોને મુકીને જવાનો જીવ બાળકોની માનો કેમ ચાલ્યો હશે એ મને મૂંઝવતુ હતું. ત્યા અમારા વિનોદે કહ્યું, "દીદી મા જતી રહી.એ બીજે પરણી પણ ગઈ. જ્યારે પાલક માતા-પિતા યોજના અંતર્ગત ફોર્મ ભરવાનું હતું ત્યારે મા હયાત હોય તો એ બાળકોની હવે સંભાળ રાખતી નથી એના લગ્ન થઈ ગયા છેનો દાખલો આપણે ફોર્મ સાથે જોડવો પડે જો માતા -પિતા બેમાંથી કોઈ એક જીવતું હોય તો. આ દાખલા વગર સહાય ન મળે. હું એ દાખલો લેવા બાળકોની મા પાસે ગયો તો કોઈ ફોર્મમાં સહી ન કરી આપે. મૂળ સહાય અલસીંગભાઈને મળવાની ને એટલે...."

સાંભળીને મારી પાસેના શબ્દો ખુટી પડ્યા. ખેર વિનોદે ગામના આગેવાનોને વચમાં નાખી સહી કરાવી ને બાળકોને સહાય મળતી થઈ.. પણ એક મા આવું કરી શકે?  માન્યમાં ન આવે એવી વાત....

VSSM વિવિધ સેવાકીય પ્રવૃતિ કરે તેમાંનું એક સરકારની વિવિધ કલ્યાણકારી યોજનાઓ સાથે તકવંચિત, વિચરતી જાતિઓને જોડવાનું... બસ એના ભાગરૃપે ઘોઘંબા તાલુકાના લગભગ 20 થી વધુ નોંધારા બાળકોને પાલક માતા પિતા યોજના સાથે જોડવાનું કર્યું.
