“When it rains well, we head over to the banks of the lake in our village. Seeing the water-filled lake brings us a deep sense of relief!”

The residents of Sabarkantha’s Kanai village shared their sentiments.

Mahendi Ali, Habib Ali, Valikaka, and others are very aware of water-related issues in their village. The entire village is committed to the well-being of the lake, which is a rarity. With the help of respected Shri Krishnakant Mehta and Indira Mehta, we were instrumental in deepening the Vadu lake of this village.

In Kanai, one hits the stone layer 125 to 150 feet under the ground. But if the aquifers up to 150 feet get recharged, it would enable farmers to take two crops in a year. Water is also required for cattle rearing. The village well and borewell are the two primary sources of water. But these two will have water only if the lakes are filled with water.

We deepened one lake, but the village had made efforts to deepen its five lakes and link them too. The community has used its inherent wisdom to make use of available resources to conserve water efficiently.

I wonder why this village has not received media attention yet. Well, we have made a documentary on the water conservation efforts in Kanai village. It will be ready to air within ten days. The documentary highlights some fantastic work done by a very aware village community.

The lake VSSM  helped deepen and filled up to the brim; as a result, the 200 feet deep borewell has recharged. In fact, the water flows back from the borewell.

The filled-up lake is a sight to behold, and so is the well with water filled up to an arm’s length.

This year we have dredged three lakes in Sabarkantha and 40 lakes in Banaskantha. Next year we plan to deepen equal numbers in both these districts. I am sure the almighty will help us accomplish our goal

 "વરસાદ સરસ વરસે કે અમે અમારા ગામના તળાવે પહોંચી જઈએ. તળાવ ભરાયેલા જોઈને અમારા જીવને નિરાંત થાય..."આ વાત કરી સાબરકાંઠાના હીંમતનગરના કનાઈગામના લોકોએ.મહેંદીઅલી, હબીબઅલી, વલીકાકા વગેરે જેવા નાગરિકો પાણીને લઈને સખત જાગૃત. આમ તો તળાવની જબરજસ્ત ભૂખ હોય એવું આ ગામ. બહુ ઓછા ગામો પાણીને લઈને આવા જાગૃત હોય. અમે આ ગામનું વડુ તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવાનુ અમારા આદરણીય ક્રિષ્ણકાંત મહેતા અને ઈન્દિરા મહેતાની મદદથી કર્યું.

ગામના ભૂગર્ભમાં 125 થી 150 ફૂટે કાળો પથ્થર આવી જાય. આમ જમીનમાં 150 ફૂટ સુધીના સ્તર પાણીથી ભરેલા હોય તો ગામલોકો ખેતીમાં બે પાક લઈ શકે. વળી પશુપાલન માટે પાણી મળી રહે. ગામમાં કૂવા અને બોરવેલ ખેતી અને પશુપાલનનો મુખ્ય આધાર. વળી આ કુવા અને બોરવેલ ગામના તળાવો જો સરસ ભરાયેલા રહે તો જ પાણીવાળા રહે. 

અમે તળાવ ગાળ્યું. પણ ગામે સ્વયંમ ભૂ પણ પ્રયત્નો કરીને ગામના પાંચ તળાવો ઊંડા કર્યા વળી પાછા એ બધા લીંક કર્યા. પોતાની સૂઝબૂઝથી પાણીને લઈને આ ગામે ઉત્તમ કાર્ય કર્યું છે.મીડિયાના ધ્યાને આ ગામની વાત કેમ નથી આવી સવાલ છે, ખેર અમે એક આખી ડોક્યુમેન્ટ્રી કનાઈના જળસંચયના કાર્યોને લઈને બનાવી રહ્યા છીએ. દસેક દિવસમાં એ બધુ તમારી સામે મુકીશ. આ ડોક્યુમેન્ટ્રીમાં અદભૂત વાતો કરી છે.. કોઈ ગામ પાણી માટે આવું જાગૃત હોય એ જ મને તો નવાઈ લાગે છે.

અમે તળાવ ગાળ્યું ને એ સરસ ભરાયું. એના લીધે ગામના બોરવેલ જે 200 ફૂટ ઊંડા છે તે રીચાર્જ થયા. એક બોરવેલમાંથી તો પાણી બેક મારે. એટલે કે સ્વંયમભૂ બહાર નીકળે. આમ આખો બોરવેલ રીચાર્જ થઈ ગયો... 

મજાનું ગામ...અમે જે તળાવ ખોદ્યું એ ભરાયું એ તમે પણ જુઓ.. ને કુવા પણ હાથેથી પાણી લઈ શકાય એટલી હદે રીચાર્જ થયા. વધારે વાત ડોક્યુમેન્ટ્રીમાં કરીશું. 

આ વર્ષે સાબરકાંઠામાં ત્રણ તળાવ ગાળ્યા. બનાસકાંઠામાં 40 તળાવો ઊંડા કર્યા. આવતા વર્ષે સાબરકાંઠામાં પણ બનાસકાંઠામાં કરીએ એટલા તળાવ કરવાનો લક્ષાંત છે.. બસ ઈશ્વર આ મનોરથ પૂર્ણ કરાવે...

Water Management work beguns in Banaskantha

Yes, the COVID19 pandemic has brought life to a standstill, for a very long time it will be safe to stay at home. However,  as they say, life must go on and we will have to begin working soon. The cycle of nature does not wait for anything, it keeps changing.

 The monsoons will arrive in a month and a half, the water crisis is all around it’s just that the news of it is buried under the weight of COVID news.

 If the times had been normal, the water conservation works we initiated a few years ago would have been progressing at full swing this summer,  especially in Banaskantha.

 VSSM's team at the grassroots shared the concern and opined that it was crucial we initiated the lake excavation works as soon as possible. The team has been up and about during this pandemic induced lockdown, they fearlessly ventured out and supplied ration kits to the families in need in some of the most remote corners of our state. And now they are willing to move away from whatever comforts they have in their villages to stay on the outskirts of some other village and begin the lake deepening works.

We spoke to the villagers, they too showed preparedness to provide tractors if the works commenced. We requested the district collector to provide us with permissions to do the same under the government’s Sujlam Suflam Scheme, to our great relief things are falling in place.

Lake deepening works have begun in Khorda and Rajkot villages of Banaskantha’s Tharad. VSSM works in partnership with the government and village.

ઘરમાં રહીએ સુરક્ષીત રહીએ એ સાચુ પણ કામ તો કરવું પડશે ને?

કુદરત તો એના નિત્યક્રમ પ્રમાણે ચાલવાની જ.. એ કોઈની રાહ જોઈને નથી બેસતી..


આગામી એકાદ દોઢ મહિનામાં વરસાદ પડવાનો. પાણીનું સંકટ પણ માથે છે જ ખાલી એના સમાચાર અત્યારે કોરાનાની મોટી બૂમના કારણે સંભળાતા નથી.


પાણી બચાવવાની અમારી ઝૂંબેશના ભાગરૃપે બનાસકાંઠામાં તળાવ ગળાવવાની અમારી ઝૂંબેશ અત્યારે તો પૂર બહાર શરૃ થઈ ગઈ હોત પણ કોરોનાએ આ વખતે જરા બ્રેક મારી..


VSSMની મજબૂત ટીમે તળાવોના કામ ઝટ આરંભીએ એવી ભાવના વ્યક્ત કરી. ડર્યા વગર રાશનકીટનું વિતરણ તો એમણે કર્યું હવે પોતાના ઘરથી છેટે કોઈ બીજા ગામમાં સુખ સુવિધાઓ વગર રહીને તળાવોના કામ કરવા બધા તૈયાર હતા.


ગામલોકો સાથે તળાવો ગળાવવા બાબતે વાત કરી અને એ લોકો પણ તળાવો ગળાય તો ટ્રેક્ટર આપવાની સહમતી આપી.


સરકારે શરૃ કરેલા સુજલામ સુફલામ યોજના અંતર્ગત તળાવો ગાળવામાં સરકારનો સહયોગ મળે તે માટે કલેક્ટર શ્રીને વિનંતી કરી અને બધુ સમુ સુતરુ ગોઠવાયું.

સરકાર, VSSM અને ગામની ભાગીદારીથી તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું છે... જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.


પાણી સમગ્ર જીવસૃષ્ટિ માટે જરૃરી.. કુદરતને પણ સમગ્ર જીવ સૃષ્ટિ માટે થઈ રહેલા આ કાર્યને લઈને રાજી થશે....

 VSSM’s Participatory Water Management campaign was launched to put this phrase into practice. The initiative was launched Banaskantha where the groundwater tables have gone alarmingly low. It all began with deepening of the village lakes. Until last year we have deepened 87 lakes in partnership with the village community.

This year too we have planned to continue with our efforts.  Kadol and Vadama have taken the lead and I was here recently to monitor the ongoing works. The enthusiasm with which the community has taken part in contributing their bit was encouraging to watch,

 The partnership is tricky yet mandatory. VSSM provides JCB expenses, the village takes the responsibility of ferrying the excavated soil and the entire community while also contributing to cash. The amount collected in cash will be eventually used for up-keeping of the common water resources.

As a result of our previous experiences, we plan to be stricter with the enforcement of these pre-conditions and do not intend to commence work where ever the contributions haven’t poured in.  Also do note that amount collected in the contribution is not managed by VSSM but the water committee that is formed to work on the water issues in the village. Why do we insist on contribution?

“Until how long should we depend on somebody else worry about what is ours, our water, our land, our resources. How long should one wait for the government to come and help or an organisation to come and do the needful? We need to take responsibility for common property resources that exist for our collective benefit. If one has contributed he or she will ask questions and show concern for it’s up-keeping. One will question if someone is encroaching over it or drawing water without permission.” It is to raise this kind of awareness that we have initiate strict enforcement of the contribution norm as well. And Vada, Khorda and Kuvaarva have contributed willingly towards the water corpus in their village. Hope we have similar experiences throughout the year!!!

પાણી પહેલાં પાળ બાંધીએ..

આ કહેવતને ચરિતાર્થ કરવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું અને ખરા અર્થમાં વરસાદી પાણીને બચાવવા અમે જળસંચય અભીયાન આરંભ્યું.

બનાસકાંઠામાં જ્યાં ભૂગર્ભજળની સ્થિતિ ખરાબ છે તે વિસ્તારોમાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું કાર્ય અમે આરંભ્યું.

87 તળાવો ગયા વર્ષ સુધી ઊંડા કર્યા આ વર્ષે પણ લોકભાગીદારી થકી તળાવો કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. ખડોલ, વડામાં તળાવ ઊંડા થઈ રહ્યા છે. જેને જોવા માટે જવાનું થયું. ગામનો ઉત્સાહ અને ભાગીદારી જોઈને રાજી થવાયું.

તળાવ ગાળવા માટેની ભાગીદારી જરા નોખી છે. સંસ્થા જેસીબીનો ખર્ચ કરે, માટી ઉપાડવાનું ગામના શીરે એ ઉપરાંત ગામલોકોએ ફાળો એકત્રીત કરવાનો.

આ ફાળો અમે તળાવો ગાળવામાં ઉપયોગમાં લઈશું.

આ વર્ષે થોડા કડક થયા છીએ ફાળો નહીં તો કામ નહીં. હા આ ફાળોનો વહીવટ અમે નથી કરતા તેની ખાસ નોંધ લેજો. ગામમાં પાણી સમિતિ બને અને એ વહીવટ કરે. પણ ફાળો તો જોઈએ જ...

ફાળા પાછળનો હાર્દ જરા સમજીએ.. મારા મતે ક્યાં સુધી કોઈ આવીને આપણા ગામના તળાવ ઊંડા કરે કે સરકાર કરે એની રાહ જોવાની?

આપણી ભાગીદારી નહીં હોય તો આપણે તળાવની ચિંતા કરવાનું નહીં કરીએ..

તમે પાંચ રૃપિયા તળાવ માટે આપ્યા હશે તો કાલે કોઈ તળાવમાં દબાણ કરશે તો તમે કહેશો ભાઈ રહેવા દે...

એટલે થોડા કડક શબ્દો સાથે જનભાગીદારી થકી આ કાર્ય કરવાનું આરંભ્યું છે.

વડા, ખોરડા અને કુંવારવાએ તો રાજી થઈને જનભાગાદીરીથી આ કાર્ય આરંભ્યું તમે ક્યારે સજ્જ થશો?

In the earlier days, the farmers would begin to have an easier workload after the Rabi crop was harvested because the groundwater wasn’t explored yet hence there was no possibility of farming during summers.  “So what did they do during this free time?” is an obvious thought that crosses our mind.

Do you think they spent their time ideally? Never! It is not in a farmer’s nature to sit still. They would till their soil and prepare their farms for the next season. They would repair and restore traditional water sources of their own and that of the village. Yes, they never depended on anybody else to come and take care of the water sources of their village. Today we depend on the government to come and take care of common property resources of our villages.

When we initiated the participatory water conservation works in Banaskantha the first condition was that the community will contribute both in the form of action and funds. The soil excavated by VSSM funded JCBs will be carried away by tractors that the community members will bring. Also, the villagers will have to contribute in cash to raise a corpus to work on the maintenance of the water sources of their village. The amount of the contribution of each household will depend on their capacity. However, the community hasn’t been prepared to provide cash contributions.

“We did send our tractors, so why money?”

“These are the lakes in your village, so you need to contribute.”

It is very difficult to get someone to contribute in cash.

If there are 300  houses in a village and each contributed Rs. 500 for upkeeping the lakes of their villages, the figure will be a decent Rs. 1.5 lacs. However, they would choose to spend the amount in any random expense over donating to maintain the lakes.

“The lake isn’t mine, so why to donate?” they argue.

“The lake is from your village when it brims with water it is also you who will benefit from it.”

I receive calls from many Sanpanch saying many villagers aren’t prepared to donate in cash.

And amidst such a discouraging scenario, the Kuvarva villages has performed beyond our expectations. The tractors arrived on schedule, they have already collected Rs. 50,000 in cash and more are on the way. We will be spending Rs. 5 lacs for the deepening on this lake plus a lac as community contribution will bring the amount to Rs. 6 lacs.

The pleasure of working in villages where villagers are supportive and understanding is beyond comprehension. It reflects the progressive mindset of the villagers. It shows they do not believe in charity neither do they like to be dependent on government and others for their needs. I hope other villages too draw inspiration from Kuvarva.

પહેલાંના સમયમાં ફાગણ ઉતરતા ખેતીકામમાંથી ખેડૂતો નવરા થવા માંડતા...

એ વેળા બોરવેલ નહોતા એટલે ઉનાળુ પાક કરવાની સંભાવના નહોતી...

ત્યારે સ્વાભાવીક ખેડૂતો કે ગામના લોકો ઉનાળામાં શું કરતા? તે પ્રશ્ન થાય.

રખેને નવરા બેસી રહેતા એવું કહેતા.. કારણ નવરા બેસી રહેવાનું આ કામગરા માણસોને ફાવે નહીં.

પોતાના ખેતરો ખેડી ચોમાસા માટે તૈયાર કરવાનું ખેડૂતો કરે સાથે પાણી સંગ્રહના સંશાધનો ઠીક કરવાનું તેઓ કરતા.

હા, ગામના તળાવો ગાળવનાનું તેઓ કોઈનીયે મદદ લીધા વગર જાતે કરતા.

આજે આપણે સૌ સરકાર પર આધારિત થઈ ગયા છીએ. મારા ગામનું તળાવ હું શું કામ ગાળુ સરકાર ગાળશે એવું આપણે જરાય શરમ વગર બોલીએ છીએ..

અમે તળાવો ગાળવાનું બનાસકાંઠામાં શરૃ કર્યું. શરત એટલી જ કે માટી ગામ ઉપાડે એ ઉપરાંત ફાળો આપવાનો. આ ફાળો ગામલોકો પોતાની મરજી મુજબ આપે. આ ફાળો પણ એમના ગામના તળાવ ગાળવામાં જ પાછો વપરાવવાનો પણ લોકો ફાળા માટે ઝટ રાજી થતા નથી.

ટ્રેક્ટર તો આપ્યા. હવે ફાળો કેમ?

હું કહુ છુ તમારા ગામનું તળાવ ગળાય એમાં તમારી હીસ્સેદારી નોંધાય માટે..

પણ બહુ અઘરુ છે કોઈના ખીસ્સામાંથી રૃપિયો કઢાવવો..

ગામમાં 300 ઘર હોય અને દરેક ઘર 500 તળાવ માટે આપે તોય ફાળો દોઢ લાખ થાય પણ આમ તેમ વાપરી નંખાતા 500 તળાવ જે સાર્વજનીક છે તેને સરખુ કરવા હું શું કામ આપું તેવું લોકો માને છે..

અરે ભાઈ તમારા ગામનું તળાવ છે. પાણી ભરાશે તો તમને જ ફાયદો થશે..

ખેર ઘણા ગામના સરપંચોના ફોન આવે છે તળાવ ગાળવા પણ ફાળાની વાતમાં સૌ મોળા પડે છે..

પણ કાંકરેજનું કુવારવા ગામ જરા નોખુ છે..

માટી ઉપાડવા ટ્રેકટર તો આપ્યા એ ઉપરાંત પચાસ હજારનો ફાળો આપ્યો. હજુ વધારે એકત્રીત કરવાની એમની ગણતરી છે. અમે આ ગામમાં તળાવ પાછળ પાંચ લાખ ખર્ચ કરીશું. સાથે તેમનો ફાળો જો એકાદ લાખ આવે તો છ લાખ તળાવ ખોદકામમાં વપરાશે..

ગામની ભાગીદારી હશે તો અમનેય કામ કરવું ગમશે.. કોઈને કહી શકીશું. ગામો જાગ્યા છે. સાવ ધર્માદુ લેવાની એમની ખેવના નથી ને સરકાર પર આધારિત નથી..

કુંવારવાની જેમ અન્ય ગામો જાગે એવી ભાવના....

In Banaskantha’s Vanva Rampura we deepened 5 lakes of which 3  now have water in it. Respected Shri. Bhanuben Shah from Mumbai donated Rs. 25 lakhs to deepen lakes in one village. There was a  small contribution from the government too. As a result of this massive  contribution we could undertake the deepening of all the 5 lakes in Rampura.

During our primary meetings to engage with the community and leadership of Rampura many had shared, “we don’t remember when our lakes were last deepened or cleaned!!” Whereas some shared it was during the last great famine Gujarat had witnessed that the lake cleaning works were carried out.

We do aren’t aware of the period of this great  famine they are talking about. But we are grateful that the lakes are now filled with waters. Hope the rain Gods continue to shower their blessings and fill up all the 5 lakes.

The Sarpanch and community of Rampura exhibited great understanding and support. VSSM’s Naran and Chirag remained at it and it is their hard work that is visible here.

My three very dear elders Nanditaben, Bhanuben and Rashminbhai… dear Nanditaben showed us the path, Bhanuben joined hands and respected Rashminbhai  opened our eyes and made us take up this immensely important task of water conservation. My regards and gratitude for your continued support and encouragement.

ઊની ઊની રોટલી ને કારેલાનું શાક,

ગાઈને મેધાની રાહ જોતા'તે આવ્યો ખરો..

બનાસકાંઠાના વાવના રામપુરામાં પાંચ તળાવો અમે ખોદ્યા. જેમાંથી ત્રણ તળાવો ભરાયા જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.

મુંબઈના આદરણીય શ્રી ભાનુબહેન શાહે એક ગામમાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરવા 25 લાખની મદદ કરી. ઉપરાંત સરકારે પણ નાની મદદ કરી. 

જેના લીધે રામપુરામાં આ કામ થઈ શક્યું.

ગામના લોકો સાથે તળાવ ઊંડા કરવા બાબતે બેઠક થઈ ત્યારે એમણે કહેલું, 'અમારા ગામનું તળાવ ક્યારે ઊંડું થયું હતું તે અમને યાદ નથી' તો કોઈએ કહ્યું, 'પસીસો કાળ પડ્યો ત્યારે તળાવ ગળાયું હતું.'

ખેર પસીસો કાળ ક્યારે પડ્યો એનો ખ્યાલ નથી. પણ હાલ આનંદ તળાવ ગળાયા પછી એમાં ભરાયેલા પાણીનો છે.

મેઘ રાજાને પાંચે તળાવ છલકાવી દેવા પ્રાર્થના...

રામપુરાના લોકો તેમજ સરપંચનો પણ આ કાર્યમાં અદભૂત સહયોગ મળ્યો...

કાર્યકર નારણ અને ચીરાગની જેહમત આ કામમાં સખત રહી...

પ્રિય નંદીતાબહેને આંગળી ચીંધી ભાનુબહેનને આ કાર્યમાં જોડ્યા તો આદરણીય રશ્મીનભાઈએ તળાવો ગળાય એ માટે કામ કરવા અમને ઢંઢોળ્યા..

Stop. The earth is begging us to stop from ruining her completely….

How much further will we go? How much longer before we realize we have reached a  point of no return? It is a foregone conclusion that  our greed, our selfishness and our belief that we are entitled to exploit the precious natural resources in the manner we want has pushed our earth to the brink of complete destruction.

In Gujarat, in districts like Banaskantha, Mehsana, Patan and many more we have drilled our earth beyond 1000 feet for water. What is agonising is  we still aren’t prepared to stop or give back. How deep do we  intend to go ?? The day when the womb of our mother earth will have nothing to offer us is not very far. The day when our coming generations will curse us for emptying the earth’s coffers isn’t very far. The day we shall have no reply to, “What did you leave for us?” our children will ask.

In an effort to find positive answers to such unnerving questions, VSSM initiated participatory ground water preserving and rain water harvesting works in Banaskantha,  one of the most water starved district of  Gujarat. The efforts have resulted in deepening of 70 lakes across various villages.  The communities are waking up to grim realities, but the awareness required is far greater than what it is.  As mentioned, these are participatory or community supported efforts. We need the rural leadership to contribute towards this mammoth task. However, the willingness to contribute towards these tasks  either comes after great effort or just does not come. The same community will donate generously and collect lakhs in donations when there is a temple coming up. But, Rs. 500 per house for lake deepening is too much for them!!

“There can be no one more poorer than you all who shy from giving back for your own children and their children. The more you give the more you get yet, it is so difficult for you all to open your hearts to such cause.” I often tell to village leaders and communities who refuse to contribute.

Sometimes such words have deep impact and communities give whereas there are few who never change.

The Sarpanch and revenue officer of Ruvel village are humble folks. They had approached us with request to initiate water conservation works in their village. “If the villagers refuse to give, I will personally contribute enough,” the Sarpanch had promised.

We have begun deepening of lake in Ruvel. The villagers have taken care of ferrying the excavated mud while the cost of JCB is borne by VSSM. Rs. 50,000 has been promised by the Sarpanch which we will be using towards the excavation itself. Such thoughtful leaders need to be saluted.

The intent behind this post is the highlight the need for our immediate actions towards conserving the ground water and mindful use of water. The disastrous implications of our carelessness are just a stone throw away.

ભૂગર્ભજળની જોઈએ એવી ચિંતા આપણે નથી કરી રહ્યા..

1000 થી 1200 ફૂટના બોર કરી પાણી મેળવી લઈએ છીએ અને એનો આપણને રાજીપો છે.

પણ હજુ કેટલા ફૂટ ઊંડા જઈ શકાશે એ ક્યારેય વિચાર્યું છે?

જો આમ જ રહ્યું તો એક વખત ઘરતીમાના પેટાળમાં આપણને આપવા માટે પાણી જ નહીં બચે.

નીચા જઈ રહેલા ભૂગર્ભજળની સ્થિતિ જોઈને, આપણી આવનારી પેઢી,

'તમે અમારા માટે કશુંયે નથી રાખ્યું'

એમ કહીને આપણને ભાંડે નહીં એ આશયથી અમે જળ વ્યવસ્થાપનના કામો બનાસકાંઠામાં શરૃ કર્યા છે. જોતા જોતામાં 70 તળાવોનો આંકડો અમે પાર કર્યો.

આમ તો જાગૃતતા આવી છે પણ હજુ જોઈએ એવી નહીં.

આર્થિક સહયોગ તળાવ માટે આપવા ગામલોકો રાજી નથી હોતા. મંદિર માટે પળમાં વીસ લાખ ભેગા થઈ જાય પણ તળાળ માટે ઘર દીઠ પાંચસો આપવા ઘણા ગામો રાજી નથી થતા.

આવો ગામોને હું કહેતી હોવું છું કે, આપવાથી વધે અને આ આપવાનું તો તમારી આવનારી પેઢી માટે છે છતાંય નથી છૂટતુ તો તમારા જેવા દરિદ્ર આ દુનિયામાં કોઈ નથી જે પોતાના પરિવારની ભવિષ્યની ચિંતા નથી કરતા.

ખેર ક્યાંક આવું બોલવાનું કેટલાકને હૃદયમાં સૂળની જેમ ભોંકાય ને લોકો સહયોગ માટે તૈયાર થાય તો ક્યાંક નઠોર માણસો પણ જોવા મળે.

બંનેએ મળીને અમારા ગામનું તળાવ ઊંડું કરોની વાત કરી. ગામ સહયોગ નહીં આપે તો સરપંચે પોતે આર્થિક સહયોગ આપવાની વાત કરી. સલામ આવા સરપંચને...

હાલમાં રુવેલમાં તળાવનું કામ શરૃ થયું. માટી ઉપાડવાનું ગામલોકોના શીરે છે. જેસીબીનો ખર્ચ સંસ્થા આપે છે. આ સિવાય સરપંચ 50,000 જેટલો ફાળો આપશે એ પણ તળાવ ખોદકામમાં જ વાપરીશું.

પણ આ લખવા પાછળનો આશય દરેક ગામે ભૂગર્ભ જળ બાબતે ચેતવાનો સમય થઈ ગયો છે.. જાગો નહીં તો મોડુ થઈ જશે...

Humans will find water from anywhere, but the animals and birds who live in our village, where will they find water from??With decreasing rains how will they survive? If we deepen our lake and it gets some water our animals and birds will be relieved. The farmers have worked to bring Narmada waters to this land, we can also release that water in the lake. Honestly, not for us but for our animals and birds we have decided to deepen the lake ,” conveyed ghrechana’s Sarpanch Shri Jamabhai while agreeing to happily contribute for deepening of the village lake.

Ghrechana is a small village of Suigam block. Situated on the periphery of the Rann even at a mere 10 feet, the ground waters  here are extremely saline. The community here survives on rainfed agriculture. Salinity means it is impossible to drill a borewell yet,  to ease the drinking water crisis the  government did try drilling once but that too has failed. Summers are terrible for this village. Water remains the most precious commodity here.

Jamabhai is absolutely correct when he says humans can still manage it is our cattle, birds and beasts we are worried about!

The span of the lake is vast but on the first sight it does not come across as a lake as most of it is levelled now. It looks more of a empty patch of land and not a lake.  It is not possible to deepen it much but we are planning to factor in  the age old wisdom of the village elders to deepen the lake as much as possible. The economic condition of the villagers is extremely poor however, they are willing to contribute for they worry about their animals and birds. To ferry the excavated mud they  roped in the tractors from their relatives if they were not able to find their own. Here too VSSM provides the JCB rest of the expenses are to be taken care of by the community.

The partnership between VSSM and the village will for surly have an impact on its ability to preserve whatever little water it receives.

We will always remain grateful to all who have helped us address this chronic issue of water in an extremely marginalised and water deprived region. Our Naran remains the backbone of this initiative, it is his continuous hard work that we have such positive stories to share.  Am so glad we are in this together.

મોણસ તો ગમે તોથી પીવાનું પોણી હોધી લાવશે પણ મૂંગા ઢોર, પંખીઓ, બીજા જીવજંતુ બચારા ચો જાય. અમારુ આ તળાવ ગળાય તો ઈમાં પોણી ભરઈન પડ્યું રે તો બધા જીવો ન ફાયદો રે. પાસી નર્મદાની લાઈન ગોમના સેડુ (ખેડુતો) લાયા હ્. તે એ લાઈનથીયે તળાવમોં પોણી નોખી હકાશે. એટલ હાસુ કહુ તો અમારા હાતર નહીં પણ મૂંગા પશુ પક્ષીઓ હાતર જ અમે આ તળાવ ગળાવવાનું નક્કી કીધુ.'

ગામના સરપંચ શ્રી જામાભાઈએ તળાવ ગળાવવા વિનંતી કરી ને જરૃર પડશે સાથ સહકાર આલશ એવું પ્રેમપૂર્વક કહ્યું.

સુઈગામ તાલુકાનું છેવાડાનું ગામ ધ્રેચાણા સાવ નાનકડુ ને રણને અડીને આવેલું. જમીનમાં દસ ફૂટ ઊંડા જાવ તો ખારુ પાણી મળે. ચોમાસુ ખેતી સિવાય અન્ય કોઈ આધાર અહીંયા જડે નહીં. આર્થિક રીતે ખુબ દુબળા ધ્રેચાણામાં બોરવેલ થઈ શકે એવી સંભાવના નહીંવત. જોકે પાણી પૂરવઠાવાળા બોર કરવા પ્રયત્ન કરે જેથી બધાને પીવાનું પાણી મળે પણ બોરવેલ ફેઈલ થઈ જાય છે. આવા ધ્રેચાણામાં ઉનાળામાં તો પીવાના પાણી માટેય વલખાં મારવા પડે એવી હાલત થઈ જાય.

જામાભાઈની વાત તદન સાચી પાણીની આવી તકલીફમાં માણસ તો એની સગવડ કરી લે પણ મૂંગા ઢોર, પશુપંખી ક્યાં જાય?

ગામના તળાવનો વિસ્તાર ઘણો મોટો પણ પહેલી નજરે તળાવ જેવું લાગે નહીં.તળાવ લગભગ સમતળ જેવું થઈ ગયેલું.

તળાવ બહુ ઊંડુ કરાય એવી સ્થિતિ નથી પણ ગામની સમજણનો ઉપયોગ કરી તેઓ કહે તે રીતે ઊંડુ કરવાનું કરી રહ્યા છીએ. આર્થિક સ્થિતિ અત્યંત નબળી એવા આ ગામના લોકો પોતાના સ્વાર્થ માટે નહીં પણ પશુપંખીઓ સમગ્ર જીવસૃષ્ટિની ચિંતા કરે છે ને માટે જ તેઓ તળાવમાંથી નીકળતી માટી ઉપાડવા ટ્રેક્ટર પોતાના તો ક્યાંક સગાસંબધીઓના ત્યાંથી લઈ આવ્યા છે. VSSM જેસીબીનો ખર્ચ આપે ને માટી ઉપાડવાનું ગામલોકોના શીરે છે.

આમ ગામ અને સંસ્થાની સહભાગીતાથી સરસ રીતે તળાવ ઊંડા કરવાનું થઈ રહ્યું છે... 

જેમની મદદથી આ બધુ થયું એ પ્રિયજનોનો આભાર... કાર્યકર નારણની સતત દોડધામથી જ આ બધુ સંભવ થાય છે એ હકીકત....સૌ સાથે છે એનો આનંદ....

Vala Ba is a very sharp and smart farmer from the village of Adhgam in Kankrej block. He worked tirelessly along with the Sarpanch and the leaders of his village to ensure that the lake of his village was deepened as a part of our drive mitigate the crippling water situation in drought prone and arid Banaskantha. Eventually the lake did get excavated through the support of Gems and Jewellery National Relief Foundation. However, Gujarat has experienced weak monsoon this year resulting into deficient water in its traditional water bodies. The government did supply water through the Narmada Project eventually brimming up this lake.

The ground water levels in the region have gone to a low of 800 to 1000 feet. In absence of any alternate irrigation facilities the farmers have been pumping out the water to meet all their irrigation needs. Now, with the water in the lake they do not require to pump out the groundwater.

Vala Ba knew that if water reached the lake he would be able to recharge his failed bore-well and that is what he did. Using a 5 HP pump she injected water into the dried bore-well and recharged it. He is now able to draw water from 500 feet. If all the farmers in the region portrayed this wisdom we might be able to get respite from this worsening water situation. Our very wise Vala Ba exhibited this foresight and acted upon it.

Our respected Rashminbhai who has been the reason we plunged into Water Management always tells us, “If we can succeed in diverting  the flood waters into the ground, the ground water tables would rise up drastically!! All we need to do is plan better.”

Had the lake of Adhgam village filled up with rain water, we would have rejoiced even more. The Narmada waters will help the farmers and also succeed in recharging the ground water levels.

વાલા બા બહુ હોંશિયાર ખેડુત. કાંકરેજ તાલુકાના અધગામમાં એ રહે. પોતાના ગામનું તળાવ ઊંડુ થાય એમાં સરપંચ ને ગામના અન્ય સાથે એ ખુબ મથે. એમના ગામનું તળાવ જેમ એન્ડ જવેલરી નેશનલ રીલીફ ફાઉન્ડેશનની મદદથી અમે ખોદાવ્યું. પણ વરસાદ પડ્યો જ નહીં. 

જો કે સરકારે આ ગામનું તળાવ નર્મદાની પાઈપથી ભરાવ્યું. ને અમને તળાવ ઊંડા કર્યાનું લેખે લાગ્યા જેવું લાગ્યું.

ગામમાં બોરવેલ ઘણા ને ખેડુતો ભુગર્ભમાંથી પાણી ઉલેચી ખેતી કરે. એટલે પાણીના તળ 800 થી 1000 ફૂટ ઊંડા પહોંચ્યા. પણ તળાવ ભરાવવાનું જ્યારથી શરૃ થયું ત્યારથી ભુગર્ભમાંથી પાણી ઉલેચાવાનું પ્રમાણ ઘટ્યું.

વાલાબાએ તળાવમાં પાંચ હોર્સ પાવરની એક મોટર મુકીને પોતાના ફેઈલ ગયેલા બોરવેલના કાણામાં પાણી ઉતારવાનું કર્યું. છેલ્લા ઘણા વખતથી થતી આ પ્રક્રિયાના લીધે તેમને 500 ફુટે પાણી મળવાનું શરૃ થયું.

આ થઈ વાત વોટર રીચાર્જની. દરેક ખેડુત આવી સમજણ રાખે તો કેટલું મોટું કામ થાય એટલે જ વાલાબા માટે વિશેષ માન થયું.

આદરણીય રશ્મીનભાઈ જેમણે અમને પાણીના કામો કરવા પ્રેર્યા એ હંમેશાં કહે ક્યાંય પણ પુર આવે અને પુરનું બધુ જ પાણી જમીનમાં ઉતારવામાં આવે તો પાણીના તળ કેટલા ઊંચા આવી જાય.. આ માટે બસ સુદ્રઢ આયોજનની જરૃર છે.

ખેર અધગામનું તળાવ નર્મદાના પાણીની ભરાયું. જોઈને રાજી થયા. છીછરુ તળાવ અમે ખોદાવ્યું એટલે તળાવમાં પાણી વધુ વખત ટકશે ને ખેડુતોને ફાયદો પણ થશે. સાથે પાણી જમીનમાં ઉતરવાનું પણ ખરુ.

When Rameshbhai Desai from Shera village of Dhanera heard about our work of desilting the lakes, he immediately contacted worker Naran. He said to desilt the lakes of his village and we will co-operate.

Then we started working in Valamdi lake. Rameshbhai is an aware sarpanch. He wanted us to desilt both the lakes of his village. But then we did not get sufficient support from the village to dig the other lake of the village, so we could not dig the other lake.

The geographical condition of Dhanera of Banaskantha is such that only if there are special circumstances then only the canal can be installed else, there is no canal at present. Farmers are dependent on the underground water only. In such a case, due to continuous extraction of water, the water tables have gone till 800 to 1000 feet deep which is a matter of concern.

The way people are worried about the underground water in Diyodar and Kankrej and Suigam (to some extent) blocks of Banaskantha, to the extent that the sarpanchs nag me to no end for desilting the lakes of their village. But this is not the case in Dhanera. That’s the place where we need to worry about the water tables the most. 

We hope that when we begin the water management work again in September, Dhanera taluka would wake up soon and support the desiliting like other talukas.

Else, we found many youngsters like Rameshbhai in Dhanera and our fieldworkers like Kanubhai and Jayantibhai also helped a lot. But they alone can’t make everything possible. If the entire village becomes aware, then Mother Earth who is tilled by the farmers, will express her happiness in a different way for repaying her favour. And we must do this much. Else, we will die if we send her to the oldage home.

We are thankful to Shera sarpanch and people of the village who co-operated in this work. I hope if there will be more awareness then we will dig the other lake of Shera. But the only condition is to carry the soil by your tractors.

We are thankful to Sanjaybhai who has never seen Dhanera or Shera but he actually worried for Mother Earth…

ધાનેરાનું સેરાગામના સરપંચ રમેશભાઈ દેસાઈએ જ્યારે જાણ્યું કે અમે બનાસકાંઠામાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું કરી રહ્યા છીએ એટલે તુરત એમણે કાર્યકર નારણનો સંપર્ક કર્યો ને અમારા ગામના #તળાવો ઊંડા કરાવો અમે સહયોગ કરશું તેવી ભાવના વ્યક્ત કરી.

એ પછી અમે વાલમડી તળાવમાં કામ શરૃ કર્યું. રમેશભાઈ ખુબ જ જાગૃત સરપંચ તેમની ઈચ્છા તેમના ગામના બેય તળાવ ઊંડા થાય તેવી પણ ગામમાંથી તળાવ ખોદાયા પછી માટી ઉપાડવા માટે જોઈએ તેવો સહયોગ ના મળતા અમે બીજુ તળાવ ખોદાવી ના શક્યા.

#બનાસકાંઠાના #ધાનેરા તાલુકાની #ભૌગોલીક સ્થિતિ એવી છે કે ત્યાં ખાસ સંજોગો ઊભા થાય તો જ કેનાલ થાય બાકી હાલ કેનાલ નથી. ખેડુતો પેટાળના પાણી ઉપર જ નિર્ભર છે. આવામાં બોરવેલથી સતત પાણી ખેંચીને પાણીના તળ લગભગ 800 થી 1000 ફૂટ ઊંડા કરી નાખ્યા છે. જે ચિંતાનો વિષય છે.

બનાસકાંઠાના દિયોદર, કાંકરેજ ને કેટલાક અંશે સુઈગામ તાલુકાના ગામોમાં ભૂગર્ભ જળની જે રીતે ચિંતા થઈ રહી છે જે રીતે ત્યાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરાવવા સરપંચ અમારો એકદમ સાચુ કહુ તો જીવ ખાઈ જાય છે એવું ધાનેરા બાજુ થતું નથી. જબકી ત્યાં ભૂગર્ભજળની સૌથી વધારે ચિંતા કરવાની જરૃર છે.

આશા રાખીએ સપ્ટેમ્બર પછી ફરી #જળસંચયના કામો થાય તે વખતે ધાનેરા તાલુકો વહેલો જાગે ને બીજા

તાલુકાની જેમ સહયોગ કરી તેમના તળાવો ઊંડા કરાવવા સજાગ બને..

બાકી ધાનેરામાં રમેશભાઈ જેવા ઘણા ઉત્સાહી યુવાનો મળ્યા અમારા કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ, જયંતીભાઈને તેમણે ખુબ સહયોગ કર્યો. પણ તેમના એકલાથી કશુંએ થવાનું નથી. આખુ ગામ જાગે તો જે #ધરતી #ખેડુતો ખેડે છે એ ધરતી માં જાગે ને મારા બાળકોએ અત્યાર સુધી મને દોહ્યા કર્યું પણ હવે મારી ચિંતા કરી મારામાંથી લીધેલું પાછુ વાળે છે તેવો રાજીપો જુદી રીતે વ્યક્ત કરે. અને ધરતી મા માટે આટલું તો આપણે કરવું જ રહ્યું. એને કાંઈ આમ વૃદ્ધાશ્રમના હવાલે થોડી કરાય નહીં તો આપણે મરી જઈએ.

આભાર સેરા સરપંચ ને ગામના જેમણે પણ આ કાર્યમાં સહયોગ કર્યો તે સૌનો.. હજુ આશા છે વધુ સજાગતાની જો એ થાય તો સેરાનું બીજુ તળાવેય ખોદીશું. પણ શરત માટી ઉપાડવાના ટ્રેક્ટર તમારાની...

જે પણ સહયોગ મળ્યો તેમાંથી ખોદાયેલા તળાવ અંગેની વાત સરપંચ રમેશભાઈના મોંઢે વિડીયોમાં જોઈ સાંભળી શકાય છે.

આભાર સંજયભાઈનો જેઓએ ક્યારેય ધાનેરા કે સેરા જોયું નથી પણ ધરતી માની ખરા અર્થમાં ચિંતા કરી.

We are working for water management programme in Shiya village of Dhanera Taluka. This village suffered a big loss in 2017. The lake which is being dug by VSSM was entirely filled with the soil which came along with the waters of the flood. This lake was again brought to existence.  This lake has better water flow. We hope for the good rains so that this lake is filled fully.

The sarpanch of the village is a very noble person and he continuously provided tractors for the lake digging work.  

we wished to dig the other lake as well but the sarpanch and other people believe that the people of the village will not support to carry the soil. So, we will not be able to dig the other lake although it is actually useful.

We expect from all the villages to think about future. Everytime I say that we are digging the lake for the betterment of people of the village. The people who are digging it, have nothing to achieve out of it. Be concerned about the lakes for posterity. Then you will be able to bask in the pride of giving the inheritance of water along with the property to your next generation. It is our concern to see that the next generation doesn’t have to leave the village due to water scarcity.

The Sarpanch of the village

ધાનેરાના શિયામાં તળાવનું કામ ચાલી રહ્યું છે. 2017ના પુરમાં આ ગામને ઘણું નુકશાન થયું. VSSM દ્વારા જે તળાવ ખોદાઈ રહ્યું છે એ તળાવ પુરમાં તણાઈ આવેલી માટીના લીધે લગભગ પુરાઈ જ ગયું હતું. જેનું નવસર્જન થયું. પાણીનો ફ્લો આ તળાવમાં સારો છે. આશા રાખીએ આ ચોમાસામાં વરસાદ સારો પડે ને આ તળાવ આખુ ભરાય.

ગામના સરપંચ ખુબ ઉમદા વ્યક્તિ આ તળાવ ખોદકામમાં એમણે સતત ટ્રેક્ટરો આપ્યા. ગામનું બીજુ તળાવ ખોદાય તેવી અમારી ઈચ્છા હતી પણ ગામલોકોનો સહયોગ માટી ઉપાડવામાં નહીં મળે તવું સરપંચને અન્યોનું માનવું છે. આથી આ ગામનું બીજુ તળાવ જે ખરેખર ઉપયોગી છે છતાં આપણે નહીં ખોદી શકીએ.

ગામલોકો થોડુ લાંબુ વિચારતા થાય એવી અપેક્ષા દરેક ગામ પાસે રાખીએ છીએ. ને દરેક વખતે કહુ છુ એમ ગામલોકોના હીતાર્થે તળાવ ખોદાય છે આ તળાવમાંથી અમારે કે મદદ કરનાર સ્વજનોને લોટોય પાણી લેવું નથી. તમારી ભાવી પેઢી માટે તળાવની ચિંતા કરતા થાવ તો ભાવી પેઢીને વારસામાં જમીન - જાગીર સાથે પાણીનોય વારસોય આપ્યાનું ગૌરવ લઈ શકશો. બાકી પાણીના અભાવે ગામ છોડવા આવનારી પેઢી મજબૂર ના બને તે જોવું રહ્યું..

ફરી આ કાર્યમાં મદદરૃપ થનાર પ્રિયજનોનો આભાર નિસ્વાર્થ એમની મદદ વગર આ બધુએ થવું અસંભવ હતું.

“Real work is done and we all are happy.  If we won’t save water then what will we give to posterity? If you go a bit ahead from our village, Rajasthan region starts. We have been digging lakes since last two years. In that, we incur the expense of diesel of JCB and people from the village provide tractors. When the soil is fertile then the farmers lift it with zeal but once there is murram or sand, who will carry it?  This is an everyday issue and they throw tantrums to provide tractors. Residents of Jadiya believe that it is their duty to carry the soil be it Murram or sand. We were amazed to see many tractors queued up. We get fed up convincing people but here the scenario was different. 

Lake Deepening Work

People use sand and Murram to fill the pits which had taken place due to July 2017 floods, to repair the roads, and to repair the soil erosion in front of their houses.    

We talked to them about making some channels of 3 ft breadth and 4 ft depth to store the water in the boundaries of the fields. They have shown the readiness for that at the moment. 

If people of the village can give more support, make a contribution then this work will be even better. We are going to convene Gram Sabha for the same and tell them to make a charity contribution for water. 

There are families from Vadi community who live in Jadiya. They suffered a great loss in floods. Village gave them plots. But now there is a small water channel, so village will give them another place to stay.   So, this lake will become a reason for everyone’s wellbeing. Thank you to all the loved ones.We are grateful to the village! We thank our entire team who tirelessly work in 42 degrees of heat.   

'અસલ કોમ થાય સે બેન અમે બધા રાજી અન તમે હવે હાચું કીધું પોણી નહિ બચાઈ તો પાસલી પરજા ન હું આલશું? અમાર ગોમથી થોડા આગળ હેંડો એટલ રાજસ્થોન શરૂ થઇ જાય તોનો વિસ્તાર હાવ હુકો ભટ પડ્યો સે. એટલ પોણીનું કોમ કરીને તમે અસલ કર્યું. ' બનાસકાંઠાના ધાનેરા તાલુકાના જડિયા ગામના દલપતભાઈ એ આ વાત કરી સાંભળી ને રાજી થવાયું.

આમ તો છેલ્લા બે વર્ષથી તળાવ ખોદાવીયે. એમાં jcb ના ડિઝલનો ખર્ચ અમારો ને માટી ઉપાડવા ટ્રેક્ટર ગામ લોકો આપે. આમ ફળદ્રુપ માટી હોય તો ખેડૂત હોંશે હોંશે ઉપાડે પણ મરોડ કે રેત નીકળે તો કોણ ઉપાડે? એ પ્રશ્ન હંમેશા થાય ને ટ્રેક્ટર મુકવામાં ઠાગા ઠૈયા કરે. આવામાં મરોડ હોય કે રેત અમારા માથે ઉપાડવાનું કામ છે તે ઉપડવાનું આવું જડિયાવાસી માને એટલે એક jcb સામે ટ્રેક્ટરની લાઈનો લાગેલી જોઈને વાહ બોલાઈ ગયું. કેમ કે બીજા ગામમાં ક્યારેક સમજાવીને થાકી જઇયે જયારે અહીંનો નજારો જુદો હતો.

રેત, મરોડ ગામમાં જુલાઈ 2017માં આવેલા પૂરથી પડેલા ખાડા પુરવા રસ્તા રીપેર કરવા, ઘરની આગળ થયેલા ધોવાણને ઠીક કરવા ગામલોકો લઇ જાય. અદભુત ગામ.

ખેતરની અંદર શેઢાની બાજુમાં ત્રણ ફુટ પહોળી અને 4 ફુટ ઊંડી ચેનલ બનાવી ગામનું પાણી ગામમાં સમાવવા બાબતે વાત કરી. એમણે હાલ પૂરતી તો એ માટે તૈયારી બતાવી છે.

હાલ મળે છે એનાથી વધુ સહયોગ ગામ કરશે, ફાળો ભેગો કરશે તો કામ વધુ સરસ થશે. અમે એ માટે ગ્રામસભાનું આયોજન કરવાના ને એમાં પાણી માટે ધર્માદુ ભેગું કરવા કહીશું.

જડિયામાં વાદી પરિવારો રહે એ નીચાણ વાળા વિસ્તારમાં રહે પૂરના પાણીમાં એમને ખુબ નુકશાન થયું. ગામે એમને પ્લોટ આપ્યા. પણ હવે ત્યાં પાણીનો વોળો છે એટલે ગામ હવે એમને બીજે જગ્યા આપશે. આમ તળાવ એ ગામના તમામના હિતમાં નિમિત્ત બનનારું સાબિત થશે.

આ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરનાર સૌ પ્રિયજનોનો આભાર.. ગામનો આભાર ને દિવસ રાત આમ તો 42 ડિગ્રીમાં જરાય થાક્યા વગર કામ કરતી અમારી ટીમનો આભાર.
