Kudos to commendable entrepreneurial skill of Fulabhai Vansfoda

“I may be living in a shanty but my dreams are sky-high. We work with bamboo, but bamboos are becoming expensive with each day. People ask the price before deciding to buy the bamboo baskets we make. They are not prepared to pay higher prices for these simple-looking baskets. During the potato season in Deesa the demand for these baskets shoots up as farmers and personnel owning cold-storage need these baskets. Vansfoda like us bring bamboo according to their buying capacity bring the raw material to make the baskets and sell in Deesa. “How far do you wish to continue making baskets, instead start a wholesale business of these baskets,” suggested a fellow Vansfoda who worked at one such place. The idea was wonderful but how to start without the initial capital?”

“VSSM’s Mahesbhai had helped us obtain our citizenry documents. I was aware that the organization gave interest-free loans. I requested Maheshbhai for the same and I was given Rs. 25,000 initially and Rs. 40,000 after I finished my first loan. The loan helped me procure material and I purchased baskets from all my relatives. They also found a ready market at their doorstep and I benefited from the bulk purchase. I also make baskets hence the benefit was much fold.”

Deesa’s Kulabhai approached and shared with me his success story while I was at the community meeting in the town. “I need more loan. I now want to buy bamboo directly from Assam!!” Fulabhai requested.

“According to him, they pay a very high price for the bamboo they buy from the local market. Same quantity if procured from Assam comes out to be very cheap. The Vansfoda families buy bamboo when they have money on hand. Eventually, when I am going to buy from them it is wise if I only provide them the bamboo as well.” Fulabhai shared.

It was a very enterprising thought. Thought of creating their cooperative has also crossed our minds. The loans have helped him immensely. However, to be able to move to a decent house from a shanty the family stays in he will have to work hard. Economic stability has helped him obtain solar-powered lights and sending kids to school.

We pray that Fulabhai is blessed with a beautiful future.

‘મુ સાંપરાંમોં જ રઉ સુ પણ મારા સપનાં બહુ ઊંચા સે. અમારો ધંધો વોંસનો પણ વોંસ દાડે દાડે મુઘો થઈ રયો સ. લોકોન વોસની ટોપલી પેલા લેતા એજ ભાવે જોવ, પૈસા વધુ આલવા ગમતા નહી. એટલ અમે ટોપલીઓ ગોમમો જઈન વેચવાનું બંધ કીધી. ડીસામોં બટાકા બહુ થાય. બટાકાની સીઝન આવ એટલ કોલ્ડ સ્ટોરેજ વાળા અને ખેડૂતોન વોંસની ટોપલીઓ જોવ. અમારા વોંસફોડો બધા જીમ સગવડ થાય ઈમ વોંસ લાવ અને ટોપલીઓ બનાઈન ડીસા બજારમોં જઈન વેપારીઓન વેચ.

અમારા નાતનો એક સોકરો આવી દુકોનમોં નોકરી કર એક દાડો ઈને કીધુ ક. ‘તુ ઓમ ટોપલીઓ ચો હુદી બનાયા કરે? ઈના કરતા ટોપલીઓ હોલસેલમાં વેચવાનો ધંધો કર’

વિચાર હારો હતો પણ પાહેણ પૈસા ચો હતા?

મહેશભાઈએ (VSSMના કાર્યકર) અમન અમારા ઓળખના આધારો બાધારો કાઢી આલવામાં ઘણી મદદ કરેલી. પાસુ સંસ્થા લોન આલ એવી મન ખબરેય. મે ઈનમ કીધુ અન ઈમને પહેલીવારની વીસ અન પસી ચાલીની લોન આલી.

મે મારા હગાવાલાએ બનાયેલી ટોપલીઓ લોનની રકમમોથી ખરીદી. એ લોકોન બજાર વેચવા જવાનુ મટ્યું અને મુ હોલસેલમાં એક હારે હો બસો નંગ વેચું એટલ મનય વકરો હારો થવા માંડ્યો એક ટોપલીએ મન દસ થી વીહ રૃપિયાનો ફાયદો થાય.

પાસુ મુયે ટોપલીઓ તો બનાવું જ. ઓંમ હારમ હારો ફાયદો થ્યો’

ડીસામાં રહેતા ફુલાભાઈ ડીસામાં આયોજીત અમારી લોકસંગઠનની બેઠકમાં અચાનક મારી સામે આવ્યા અને પોતાની સાફલ્યગાથા વર્ણવી અને કહ્યું, મારે હજુ લોન જોઈએ છે. અત્યાર સુધી પોતાના સગાવહાલા પાસેથી ટોપલીઓ ખરીદતા ફુલાભાઈને એક વિચાર આવ્યો છે વાંસ ખરીદવાનો અને એ પણ સીધા આસામથી.

તેમના કહેવા પ્રમાણે, વાંસફોડાવાદી સ્થાનીક લાટીમાંથી વાંસ ખરીદે તો મોંધો પડે. પણ આસામથી ગાડી મંગાવે તો સસ્તો પડે. વળી અહીંયા લોકો આર્થિક સગવડ થાય એમ વાંસ લાવે.

તેઓ કહે, ‘મુ ટોપલીઓ એમની પાહેથી લઉ સુ ઈમ વોંસ ઈમન આલુ એ પણ સસ્તા ભાવે તો ઈમન ન મન બેયનો ઘણો ફાયદો થાય’

વિચાર ઉત્તમ છે. આ લોકોની નાનકડી મંડળી બનાવવાનો પણ વિચાર આવ્યો છે. ફુલાભાઈની લોનથી તરક્કી ઘણી થઈ છે. હા છાપરામાંથી પાક્કા ઘરમાં જવા માટે મોટો ધંધો કરવો પડશે એવું એ કહે છે.

આર્થિક સદ્ધરતા આવી તો ઘરમાં સોલાર લાઈટ આવી અને બાળકો નિશાળ જતા પણ થયા.

ફુલાભાઈને ભવિષ્ય સુંદર બને તેની શુભેચ્છા..

The current living conditions of Vansfoda families

The 6 Vansfoda families from Gondal, Rajkot survive under hellish living conditions. A glance at them and one can’t help but feel these families are  merely surviving and not living their lives. VSSM’s Kanubhai played an important role in ensuring these families receive Voter-ID  and Ration cards. Kanubhai has also filed applications for allotment of residential plots. The District Collector has written letters to District Development Officer and Additional Director - Vikasti Jaati, Rajkot asking them to do the needful in the matter. While we have written a letter to the District Collector as he has all the authority required to sanction and allot the plots. Inspite of all these efforts the matter is getting delayed, we aren’t able to comprehend why???

Kanubhai and Chayaben of VSSM are in process of preparing a request proposal on the matter. They are also working on bringing the children from these families to school, which again is proving to be a difficult matter. The need of child’s birth certificate at the time of admission has long been relinquished and yet   the school authorities keep asking for the same document that it the one of the primary reasons that keep the children of nomadic communities away from school. In absence of   the birth certificate the families are required to get an affidavit and submit the same. These are   the documents that are absolutely unnecessary and yet the poor families have to incur such costs. As these families say, “we have done all the necessary expenditure on the cost of getting the documents that would allow us to send our children to school and secure a small lot to build a home!!” What now remains is the long  and patient wait….

VSSM દ્વારા વાંસફોડા પરિવારોની પ્લોટ માટેની દરખાસ્ત તૈયાર કરવામાં આવી

રાજકોટના ગોંડલમાં 6 વાંસફોડા પરિવારો તદન ખરાબ પરિસ્થિતિમાં જીવી રહ્યા છે. તેમની સ્થિતિ જોઈને તો એવું લાગે જાણે કુદરતે તેમને જીવન આપ્યું છે અને તે આ લોકો પુરુ કરી રહ્યા છે. vssmના કાર્યકર કનુભાઈની મદદથી આ પરિવારોને મતદારકાર્ડ, રેશનકાર્ડ મળ્યા. અમે આ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે અરજી કરી છે. પણ રાજકોટ કલેકટર દ્વારા આ સંદર્ભે જીલ્લા વિકાસ અધિકારી તથા નાયબ નિયામક વિકસતી જાતિ રાજકોટને આ સંદર્ભે ઘટતું કરવાનો પત્ર પાઠવવામાં આવ્યો છે.

કલેકટરને અમે પ્લોટ ફાળવણીની સત્તા તેમના તાબા હેઠળની છે તેવો પત્ર પાઠવ્યો છે. પણ કોણ જાણે આ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ ક્યારે ફાળવાશે.

હાલમાં vssmના કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ તથા છાયાબહેન આ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ મળે તેની દરખાસ્ત તૈયાર કરાવી રહ્યા છે. તો સાથે સાથે તેમના બાળકોને શાળામાં ભણવા બેસાડવાનું પણ કરે છે. સરકારી શાળાએ આ બાળકોના જન્મતારીખના દાખલા ના હોવાથી એફીડેવીટ કરાવવા કહ્યું. જે કાયદા પ્રમાણે જરૃરી નથી. છતાં આવા ખોટા ખર્ચ કરાવવાનું મોટાભાગના સરકારી તંત્ર દ્વારા થતું હોય છે.
ખેર વાંસફોડા પરિવારોના બાળકો ભણે અને આ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ મળે તે આશાએ તેમણે તેમની ભાષામાં કહીએ તો જરૃરિ તમામ કાગળ પતરનો ખર્ચ કરી દીધો છે.જોઈએ હવે ફાઈનલી તેમને પ્લોટનો કબજો ક્યારે મળે છે.

The Living Conditions of the Nat and Vansfoda families
in Khoda Village

17 families belonging to Nat and Vansvadee (Jogi) nomadic community stay in a settlement located on the outskirts of Khoda village of Banaskantha’s Tharad block. The settlement has been their home for many years now. While these families remain on the move through out the year they gather back in the settlement to spend the monsoon months. Most nomadic communities across Gujarat do not move/wander during the monsoon period. 

These 17 families possess  Voter-ID Cards, Ration Cards bearing the address of Khoda village, their houses in the settlement  are Kuccha huts with hay roofs. VSSM has been striving to ensure these families are allotted plots to build their homes. VSSM has also filed applications for the same, its been long since we  submitted all the relevant documents in the office of the Mamlatdar. Inspite of producing all the necessary  documents there has been no progress in the direction of processing the applications.  

Until now the families had been receiving water in the settlement, but that too has been turned off. It is believed that an RTO office is coming up on the land where these families are staying right-now. The families aren’t against any construction  on this land, they aren't asking for the plots on that very piece of land, all they are requesting is a piece of land anywhere  so that they can build home and have a permanent address. When the authorities do not process the applications for such a long time it reflects their attitude and makes us question their willingness to work for the voiceless and the marginalised.

At present the families are being pressurised to vacate the place without  telling them where to go. VSSM has requested the authorities to do what is rightful and just for these families. Let us hope for the best.

It pains us immensely when we see thousands of nomadic families survive in absolutely inhumane conditions. Almost 7 decades of independence and our country has huge populations who do not have food at the end of the day. How shameful is that for us as a society and country. After filing the applications we had been expecting allotment of plots, instead what the authorities are doing is shooing them away from the place they called home for several years. 

How wonderful it would have been if the families were given the same priority as is been given to a RTO office!

બનાસકાંઠાના થરાદ તાલુકાના ખોડાગામમાં નટ અને વાંસવાદી (જોગી)ના કુલ 17 પરિવારો વર્ષોથી ગામમાં રહે છે. ધંધા અર્થે ગામથી થોડો સમય બહાર જાય પણ વળી પાછા આ ગામમાં જ આવીને રહે છે. આ પરિવારો પાસે આ ગામના મતદારકાર્ડ, રેશનકાર્ડ પણ છે. આ પરિવારો ગામથી દૂર પડતર જગ્યા પર ઘાસના છાપરાં બાંધીને રહે છે. આ પરિવારોને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે VSSM દ્વારા છેલ્લા ચાર વર્ષથી રજૂઆત થઈ રહી છે અને પ્લોટની માંગણી સંદર્ભની દરખાસ્ત તમામ દસ્તાવેજ સાથેની મામલતદાર કચેરીમાં જમા પણ કરાવી છે પણ કોણ જાણે આ દિશામાં કોઈ કાર્યવાહી કેમ થતી નથી.

આ પરિવારો જ્યાં રહે છે ત્યાં પીવાના પાણીની સુવિધા કરી હતી તે પણ બંધ કરી દેવામાં આવી છે. હાલમાં આ પરિવારો રહે છે ત્યાં કદાચ આર.ટી.ઓ કચેરી બનવાની છે. આરટીઓ કચેરી ભલે બને આ પરિવારો તેનો વિરોધ નથી કરતા. ના તેઓ હાલમાં જે જગ્યા પર રહે છે તે ફાળવવાની જીદ કરતા પણ ક્યાંક તો તેને સ્થાયી સરનામું આપવાની માંગ કરે છે. જે આ દેશના નાગરિક હોવાના નાતે તેમનો અધિકાર પણ છે. પણ સમાજના સૌથી છેવાડે રહેતા આ પરિવારો પ્રત્યે સૌ દુર્લક્ષ સેવી રહ્યા હોય તેમ લાગે છે. હાલમાં તેમના ઉપર આ જગ્યા ખાલી કરવા સૌ દબાણ કરી રહ્યા છે. પણ ક્યાં જઈને રહેવું તેનો વિકલ્પ કોઈ આપતા નથી. VSSMએ આ પરિવારો સાથે ન્યાયીક કાર્યવાહી કરવાની રજૂઆત કરી છે. જોઈએ શું થાય છે..

પણ આઝાદીના આટલા વર્ષો પછી પણ આવી અમાનવીય સ્થિતિમાં આપણા જ દેશના નાગરિકોને જીવવું પડે તે આપણા સૌ માટે શરમજનક છે. વળી તેમને કાયમી સરનામું આપવાની જગ્યાએ હડહડ કરતા તેમને કાઢી મુકવાનું સૌ હોંશથી કરી રહ્યા છે. કાશ આર.ટી.ઓ. કચેરીની જેમ આ પરિવારો પણ સરકારની પ્રાથમિકતામાં હોત...

Since past many years,  15 Vansfoda families have settled  in Tadav village of Vav block in Banaskantha district. The traditional occupation of these families was basketry but, the scarcity of bamboo  and increasing prices of raw material have made them give up the occupation of their forefathers and earn living from selling plastic house ware. Infact, the Tadav settlement is a place they come back to after wandering in the neighbouring villages for a few weeks to sell their plastic ware. VSSM has enabled these families obtain their ration cards, voter ID cards but the resistance by the villagers to allow these families settle in Tadav has delayed the process of applying for residential plots.

બનાસકાંઠાના વાવ તાલુકાના ટડાવ ગામમાં ૧૫ વાંસફોડા પરિવારો વર્ષોથી રહે છે. આ પરિવારોનો પરંપરાગત વ્યવસાય સુડલા અને ટોપલા બનાવવાનો પણ છેલ્લા કેટલાક વખતથી એમણે પ્લાસ્ટીકના તબકડા વેચવાનું શરુ કર્યું છે. કેટલાક સમય માટે સ્થળાંતર કરે બાકીનો સમય ટડાવમાં જ રહે. vssmના ધ્યાને આ પરિવારો આવતાં આપણે એમનાં મતદારકાર્ડ, રેશનકાર્ડ કરાવ્યાં. પણ રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટની ફાળવણી હજુ સુધી થઇ નથી. મૂળ ગામમાં આ પરિવારોને કોઈ ઇચ્છતું નથી એટલે આ કામ થયું નથી.

vssmના કાર્યકર શારદાબેન અને નારણ દ્વારા ૧૫ પરિવારોની રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ મેળવવા માટેની અરજી તા.૧૨ માર્ચના રોજ તૈયાર કરવામાં આવી. આ પરિવારોને ઝડપથી પ્લોટ ફાળવાય એમ ઇચ્છીએ..
