Mittal Patel meets Balu Ma

Balu Ma stays in a tattered tin-roofed house perched between two pucca homes in Harij town of Patan district.

“Ben, we have to go meet Balu Ma.” Mohanbhai, my team-mate tells me. Balu Ma was walking around in her front yard we called her,  but she could not hear us. We walked up to her and asked her something that she would love. She was delighted to see us, she kissed my hands and just like a mother,  she showered me with great affection.

“If  I am in Harij,  how can I not come and meet you?” I chat with  her.

“Glad you did, Mohanbhai had mentioned about your visit to Harij, but he had told me that you would be at the city centre, so I walked with great difficulty to come see you, but couldn’t find you!!

“You did not have to come to see me, I was going to come to meet you.”

“You have eased my life, but I pray to God to call me to him. I am tired of living like this.”

Balu Ma’s eyes well up while saying this, and so did ours. I had met Balu Ma second time. Mohanbhai, Pareshbhai, I and others take care of Balu Ma and have become her family now, that is the reason she opens up with us to shares her joys and pain.

The more we work with the elderly the more we realise that it is challenging to spend old age without the care and support from loved ones. Elders like Balu Ma reaffirm that realisation. VSSM has decided to provide warmth and support to elders in need and will continue to do so…

બાલુ મા...

પાટણના હારીજમાં બે પાક્કા ઘરની વચ્ચે પતરાંવાળા કાચા ઘરમાં રહે. અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈએ કહ્યું, બેન આપણે એમને મળવા જવાનું છે. તે અમે એમના ઘરે પહોંચ્યા. ઘરની ઓશરીમાં એ આમ તેમ ઘીમે પગલે ફરતા હતા. અમે એમને બુમ પાડી પણ એમને કાને ઓછુ સંભળાય. છેવટે એમની ઓશરીમાં જઈને બાલુમા મજામાં એવું પુછ્યું. 

અમને જોઈને એ રાજી રાજી થઈ ગયા. મારો હાથ એમણે ચૂમ્યો. મારા ગાલ અને શરીર પર એમણે વહાલથી હાથ ફેરવ્યો. એમનું વહાલ મા એના બાળક માટે હેત વર્ષાવે એવું.

મે એમને કહ્યું, 

'હારીજ આવી હતી તે તમે આવ્યા તે મળવા આવી'

'બહુ હારુ કર્યું. મને મોહનભાઈએ કહ્યું તુ કે તમે આવશો. પણ એ તો કે'તાતા કે તમે બજાર આવશો તે હું તો ધેમ ધેમ છેક બજાર પોગી. થાકી ગઈ.. પણ તમે ના મલ્યા'

'હું અહીંયા આવવાની હતી. તમારે બજાર નહોતું આવવાનું...'

'તમે મને હખ કરી દીધું.. પણ હવે ભગવાન ઝટ લઈ જાય તો સારુ.. થાકી છું...'

બાલુ મા બોલતા હતા તે વેળા એમની આંખોના ખૂણા ભીના થઈ ગયા ને એમને જોઈને અમારા પણ.. એમને હું બીજીવાર મળી રહી હતી. પણ હવે હું, મોહનભાઈ, પરેશભાઈ વગેરે જે એમને સાચવે છે એમની સંભાળ લે છે એ એમનો પરિવાર બની ગયા છીએ. એટલે એ સુખ દુઃખની વાત અમને કહે છે..

ઘડપણ એ પણ કોઈ સ્નેહીજનના સાથ વગર કાઢવું ઘણું કપુરુ. બાલુ મા જેવા માવતરોને મળુ ત્યારે દર વખતે આ વાત સમજાય... 

ખેર અમારો પ્રયત્ન આવા માવતરોને હૂંફ આપવાનો...

Mittal Patel meets Kantama

Kantama resides in Dungrasan village, she bears the responsibility of being caregiver to her only mentally unstable son. Her self-esteem prevents her from reaching out for help. It was the very humble Surdas Kaka who introduced Kantama to VSSM’s Ishwarbhai.

“It would be a great relief if you could give me some ration!” Kantama had replied when asked what can we do to ease her work load. VSSM began providing monthly ration kit to her.

Recently, I had the opportunity of meeting her. “I am at peace, life feels good now. I do not have to stretch my hands for help. The ration kit reaches me on time every month,” Kantama shared. The peace was visible on her face.

We are grateful to all our well-wishing donors who are responsible for bringing this peace to numerous individuals like Kantama.

કાંતામા ડુંગરાસણગામમાં રહે. તેમને એક દીકરો જેની માનસીક અવસ્થા નબળી. 

આમ દીકરાની જવાબદારી કાંતામાને શીરે. 

કાંતામા ખુદ્દાર કોઈ પાસે હાથ લાંબો કરવો ગમે નહીં.

ગામના એકદમ ભલા સૂરદાસ કાકાએ અમારા કાર્યકર ઈશ્વરને કાંતામા સાથે મેળવ્યા. 

મા તમારા માટે શું કરીએ એવું પુછતા એમણે, 

રાશન આપો તો રાહત રહે એવું કહ્યું ને અમે એ આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.

હમણાં હું એમને મળી એમણે કહ્યું, મારા જીવને હવે સાતા છે.. કોઈ સામે હાથ લાંબો નથી કરવો પડતો ટેમ ટુ ટેમ મને આ રાશન મળી જાય છે...

હાશકારો એમના મોંઢા પર હતો...

આભાર સ્નેહજનોનો જેઓ આ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરે છે...

"Please give me poison I do not wish to live any longer!” pleads Ranjitbhai to his father Devrajbhai...

"Please give me poison I do not wish to live any longer!” pleads Ranjitbhai to his father Devrajbhai after making constant rounds of various clinics for the last seven months. Ranjitbhai lives in Lodhiyana village of Amreli and earned his living from applying sequins on sarees. Seven months ago, a truck hit him while he was on his way to Una. One of his legs suffered a severe injury and had to be operated on to insert a rod. The family spent their savings on this surgery. While recuperating he developed some infection in the same leg, once again he was making rounds of hospitals in Rajkot, Junagadh, Mahuva… but no one could treat his condition and severe pain persisted. Finally, when they learnt about a free treatment program in Timbi, the father-son duo reached Timbi.

Pareshbhai from Timbi Hospital administration department called me up with a request to help Ranjitbhai receive treatment from Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. Ranjitbhai had no money to travel to Ahmedabad hence, Pareshbhai arranged for an ambulance while Kiran took care of the formalities for his admission into Civil Hospital.

Now it was a matter of waiting and being patient. Ranjitbhai’s wound was dressed daily, the doctor made daily visits but would not talk much to the patient. The father-son duo was very confused with this approach. It made them restless. Why are they operating Ranjitbhai when other doctors had advised the same? The question bothered them. But how to find an answer to the same!?

In the meanwhile,  cyclone Tauktae blew away the roof over their house in their hometown and their livelihood also suffered.

VSSM’s Kiran would regularly visit the father-son duo at the hospital. One day the father requested Kiranbhai, ‘Please get us relieved from here. It is better for Ranjit to be amidst the family instead of dying a lonely death here at the hospital.”

Kiran mentioned this to me, I called Devrajbapa to the office. Ranjit’s younger brother who was visiting him also accompanied his father to the office.

Devrajbapa was in tears describing the silence of the doctors and the condition of their cyclone ravaged house. Ranjit was much better but the men had lost hope, primarily because the doctor would not provide regular updates on Ranjit’s medical condition and they were not confident to speak to the doctor on their own.

I spoke to Shri Kamleshbhai Upadhyay who works at Civil Hospital, he spoke to the doctors treating Ranjitbhai. The doctors asked for  Devrajbapa to meet him. Kiran accompanied Devrajbapa and his younger son to meet the doctor. Devrajbapa asked all the questions that bothered him about Ranjitbhai’s condition, and the doctor patiently replied and resolved to each one of them.

“Now we will be here for as long as it takes for Ranjit to fully recover…” a relieved Devrajbapa tells us.

We provided the younger son with a tarpaulin and some cash while assuring him of support to start some business. Devrajbapa was at peace by now.

The reason for my sharing this rather insignificant story here is to draw your attention to the improving conditions of public hospitals and the need for them to pay attention to matters like so, to improve the communication with the patients and their relatives and ease their worries.

Yesterday the doctors performed plastic surgery on Ranjitbhai’s wound that had finally healed, he will be able to leave for Lundhiya in the next few days.

 'મને ઝેર દઈ દ્યો મારે હવે નથી જીવવું..'

છેલ્લા સાતે મહિનાથી એક દવાખાનામાંથી બીજે ને ત્યાંથી ત્રીજે ધક્કા ખાતા રણજીતભાઈએ પોતાના પિતા દેવરાજભાઈને આ કહ્યું.મૂળ અમરેલીના લોંધિયાગામના વતની રણજીભાઈ દેવીપૂજક સાડીઓમાં ટીલડીઓ લગાડવાનું કરે. સાત મહિના પહેલાં ઉના જતા ટ્રકે અડફેટે લીધા. ઢીંચણથી નીચેના ભાગમાં ફેક્ચર આવ્યું. ઓપરેશન થયું સળિયા નંખાયા. બચત ખર્ચાઈ ગઈ. ઘરે આવ્યા પછી પગમાં રસી થઈ. ફરી દવાખાનાના ધક્કા, દેવરાજાબાપા કહે, જુનાગઢ, રાજકોટ, મહુવા વગેરે કાંઈ કેટલાય દવાખાને ધક્કા ખાધા પણ દરદ મટે નહીં. છેવટે ટીંબીમાં મફત સારવારની જાણ થઈ. તે પહોંચ્યા ટીંબી.

ટીંબી હોસ્પીટલના સંચાલનમાં પરેશભાઈ કાર્યરત એમણે મને ફોન કર્યો ને રણજીતભાઈને સીવીલમાં સારવાર કરાવવામાં મદદ કરવા કહ્યું. અમદાવાદ આવવા પૈસા નહીં તે પરેશભાઈએ એમ્બ્યુલન્સ બાંધી આપી. અહીંયા આવતા વેત અમારા કાર્યકર કીરણે એમને દાખલ કરાવી દીધા. હવે મુદ્દો હતો ધીરજનો. રોજ ડ્રેસીંગ થયા. ડોક્ટર આવે ફટાફટ રજીભાઈને જોઈને જતા રહે. પણ દેવરાજબાપા કે રણજીતભાઈ સાથે ઝાઝી વાત ન થાય. બીજા ડોક્ટરોએ તો ઓપરેશનનું કહેલું ત્યારે અહીંયા એમાનું કેમ કરતા નથી તે પ્રશ્ન પણ થાય. પણ પુછી ન શકે. 

તૌકતે વાવાઝોડુ એમના ગામમાં આવીને ગયું અને એમનું છાપરુ ઊડી ગયું. રોજગારના  પણ કોઈ ઠેકાણા નહીં.  

માનસીક રીતે ભાંગી પડેલા રણજીભાઈ અને બાપાના હાલચાલ પુછવા અમારો કિરણ નિયમીત જાય. તે એક દિવસ એમણે કિરણને કહ્યું, 'અમને રજા દઈ દ્યો. ઘીરે અમારા બધાની વચમાં રણજીત મરશે તો ચાલશે પણ આંયા...'

કીરણે મને વાત કરીને અમે દેવરાજાબાપાને ઓફીસે બોલાવ્યા. તેમનો નાનો દીકરો પણ ખબર પુછવા આવેલો તે બાપ દીકરો બેઉ ઓફીસે આવ્યા. 

ડોક્ટર કાંઈ કહેતા નથી ને ઘરની સ્થિતિ તો બોલતા બોલતા દેવરાજબાપાની આંખમાં આસુ આવી ગયા. રણજીતભાઈને ઘણું સારુ હતું છતાં આ લોકો હિંમત હારી ગયેલા. મૂળ પ્રશ્ન ડોક્ટરે તેમની સાથે વાત નહોતી કરી. ક્યાંક આ લોકો ડોક્ટરને પુછી ન શક્યા.

આખરે સીવીલમાં કાર્યકરત અને ખુબ સંવેદનશીલ શ્રી કમલેશભાઈ ઉપાધ્યાયને આ વાત કહી. તેમણે વિભાગના ડોક્ટરને વાત કરી. ડોક્ટરે કહ્યું કાકાને મોકલી આપો હું વાત કરીશ. અમે કીરણ સાથે દેવરાજાબાપાને તેમના નાના દીકરાને સીવીલ મોકલ્યા. બાપાએ ડોક્ટરને ઘણા પ્રશ્નો પુછ્યા ને ડોક્ટરે દરેક વાતનું સમાધાન આપ્યું. કાકાના જીવને શાંતિ થઈ એ પછી એમણે કીરણને કહ્યું, 'હવે જેટલા દી રાખશે એટલા દી રેશું ને રણજીતને હાજો નરવો લઈને આંયાથી જશું..'ગામડેથી આવેલા એમના નાના દીકરાને તોરપોલીન ને થોડા પૈસા આપ્યા. સાથે નવો ધંધો કરવા મદદ કરવા કહ્યું. કાકાને જીવને હવે સાવ શાંતિ થઈ. 

આ વાત સાવ નાનકડી છે.. મૂળ સારવારની સાથે ક્યાંક વાત કરવાનું થાય તો શું પરિણામ આવે એ દર્શાવવા આ લખ્યું. 

સરકારી હોસ્પીટલોમાં પહેલાં કરતા સુવિધા ઘણી સરસ થઈ છે. એમાં આવી વાતો પર ધ્યાન દેવાય તો સોને પે સુહાગા જેવું થઈ જાય.  ખેર ગઈ કાલે જ રણજીતભાઈને પગમાં જ્યાં પસ થયું હતું તે લાંબા સમયના ડ્રેસીંગ પછી સારુ થયું ને એમની પ્લાસ્ટીક સર્જરી પણ થઈ ગઈ. બે ચાર દિવસમાં હવે એ લુંધિયા જઈ શકશે..

“See, I made you laugh,” Champa Ma.

Champa Ma has lost her eyesight and ability to work. It has been  years she lost her husband, there is no one in the family. A lady from Thakkar community in Shihori provided refuge to Champa Ma, but after her demise Champa Ma had nowhere to go. Later, when she remembered Shihori’s Babubhai Raval, Champa Ma landed at his doorstep, the family embraced her and provided space to stay. On learning about her, VSSM started providing a monthly ration kit so that Babubhai’s family did not feel the burden and Champa Ma also remained a little relaxed.

As you can see in the images, Champa Ma adores her twin goats. “We cannot tie these goats away from her, Champa Ma would start shouting otherwise, and the goats also start bleating if they don’t see Champa Ma around!” Babubhai shared. We all broke into hearty laughter after hearing Babubhai.

“I cannot be of any service to others, at least  I can take care of these goats. Ben, I felt really good that you came all the way to meet us.” Champa Ma shared as she reached out for my hand and held it.

“I too had come here to listen to this warm words of yours.” Champa Ma laughed again after she heard me say this.

VSSM cares and nurtures 184 elders like Champa Ma. We provide them ration kits or food (if they are unable to cook for themselves), anticipating that their later years are free from stress of finding food. One ration kit costs Rs. 1200, it gives food security to one individual for a month. And if we have more individuals like Babubhai, the world would be a better place.

 The efforts of our Ishwarbhai and Kanubhai who remain relentless in ensuring help reaches those who deserve it the most.

તમે મને હસાડી દીધી... એવું ચંપામાએ હસતા હસતા કહ્યું...

એમની આંખોના દિવા ઓલવાઈ ગયા છે. હાથપગ પણ ઝાઝુ કામ નથી કરતા. એમના પતિને ગુજરે ગયે વર્ષો થયા. પરિવારમાં પણ બીજુ કોઈ નહીં. આવા નોંધારા થયેલા ચંપામાને વર્ષો પહેલાં શિહોરીના એક ઠક્કર બહેને આશરો આપેલો. પણ એ બહેન અવસ્થા થતા દુનિયા છોડી ગયા. ક્યાં રહેવું એ પ્રશ્ન ચંપા મા સામે હતો.

ત્યાં એમને યાદ આવ્યા શિહોરીમાં રહેતા બાબુભાઈ રાવળ. ચંપા મા બાબુભાઈના ઘરે આવ્યા ને કાયમી આશરો આપશોનું કહ્યું. બાબુભાઈ અને એમના પરિવારે હા પાડી ને ચંપા મા રહી પડ્યા બાબુભાઈના ઘરે... 

અમારા ધ્યાને ચંપામા આવ્યા. અમે દર મહિને એમને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. જેથી બાબુભાઈને ટેકો રહે ને ચંપામાના જીવને પણ સાવ માથે નથી પડ્યાનો હાશકારો થાય. 

આ ચંપામાને ફોટોમાં દેખાય એ બકરી ઘણી વહાલી. બાબુભાઈ કહે, બકરીને અમારાથી ક્યાંય આઘી પાછી બંધાય નહીં જો બાંધીએ તો ચંપામા રાડો પાડે ને ચંપા મા ક્યાંક આઘા પાછા થાય તો બકરીબેન રાડો પાડે.. બાબુભાઈની વાત સાંભળી અમે સૌ હસ્યા ત્યાં ચંપા મા કહે, 'મારાથી બીજી સેવા નથી થતી પણ આ બકરીની તો કરુ..પણ બેન તમે આવ્યા તે મને ખુબ હારુ લાગ્યું..' એમ કહીને એમણે મારો હાથ શોધ્યો ને પકડ્યો... 

'

બસ આ હારુ લાગ્યું એ સાંભળવા જ તમારી પાસે આવી હતી.. મારી વાત સાંભળી એ ફરી હસ્યા..ચંપા મા જેવા બીજા 184 માવતરોને અમે સાચવીએ. દર મહિને રાશન તો ક્યાંક જમવાની વ્યવસ્થાઓ કરીએ જેથી એમની પાછલી જિંદગી સુખેથી જાય.. એક માવતરને માસીક 1200નું રાશન આપીએ..જેથી એમને કોઈની ઓશિયાળી વેઠવાની ન થાય..બાબુભાઈ જેવા માણસોને જોઈને દુનિયા જીવવા જેવી લાગે.. 

અમારા કાર્યકર ઈશ્વર અને કનુભાઈનો આભાર.. તેમણે ચંપામાને શોધ્યા ને વિગત અમારા સુધી પહોંચાડી...

  Let us move our attention from the topic of Covid…

A recent meeting with Laxmikant Kaka in Rajkot reminded me of childhood stories on fate and destiny. VSSM’s Chayaben and Kanubhai introduced me to Laxmikant Kaka whilst I was in Rajkot recently.

Kaka was a cloth merchant living in Pune, more than 50 people worked at his factory. Sheth Laxmikant as he was called by all was a generous philanthropist always eager to offer help when needed. But as fate would have it, a fatal road accident snatched away his entire family including his wife, sons, daughter-in-law…. with only kaka surviving the car crash. The accident hurt Kaka’s mental health. He boarded some random train,   left Pune to reach no destination. He reached Rajkot and stayed back at the railway station.

It has been 25 years since 15 years ago he suddenly remembered his past. Kaka travelled back to Pune but found no remains from his past, he did not feel like meeting his relatives. After returning to Rajkot, he took up odd jobs to earn his living.

Laxmikant Kaka has aged, he cannot work as before. A non-profit trust was sending him tiffin but that too suddenly stopped. Later Khodubhai and others from the settlement have been bringing food to him. The families took turns to feed Kaka but eating food for free was not something that Kaka desired. However, since he had no option he accepted these favours. Khodubhai, took special care of Kaka in sickness and in health.

Once the VSSM team came in contact with Kaka they helped him obtain a ration card, voter id card and pension for the elderly. It has been very tough for Kaka to accept charity or be dependent on others. The awkwardness was quite evident on his face.

VSSM’s Chayaben began bringing a ration kit to Kaka under our Maavjat initiative. This did bring a sense of relief and joy to him but how to cook was a big question. “If it is ok we will cook three meals for you?” Kodhubhai had proposed.  Khodubhai himself was a man with limited means but he never turned away from helping kaka.

“There was a time when I provided for people in need…” Kaka could say no further as tears rolled down his eyes when we brought the first ration kit to him.

Kanubhai requested him to not lose heart, this was part of VSSM’s duty towards the elders it comes across.

Every month when we bring the ration kit to Kaka he notes down the details in a register and says a little prayer to thank God.

VSSM provides ration kits to 156 elderly every month. It is the support and donations from our society that enables us to do what we are doing.

The current situation helps us understand the power of nature, meeting kaka and learning about him was a similar experience. The helplessness he must have experienced then….

કોરોનાથી હટીને એક વાત કરવી છે.. 

પેલું નસીબ રાજાને પણ રંક બનાવી દેની વાત સાંભળેલી પણ રાજકોટમાં લક્ષ્મીકાંત કાકાને મળીને પ્રત્યક્ષ આ અનુભવ્યું..

લગભગ દોઢ મહિના પહેલાં રાજકોટ જવાનું થયેલું એ વેળા અમારા કાર્યકર છાયાબહેન, કનુભાઈએ મને લક્ષ્મીકાંત કાકાને મળાવી. 

કાકા વર્ષો પહેલાં પુનામાં રહેતા.એમનો કાપડનો મોટો ધંધો. પચાસ માણસો એમની ફેક્ટરીમાં કામ કરે. શેઠ તરીકે એ ઓળખાય. દાન ધરમમાંય એ ઘણું માને. આવા કાકા પરિવાર સાથે પ્રવાસ કરી રહ્યા હતા ને તેમના વાહનને અકસ્માત નડ્યો. આખો પરિવાર દીકરા, વહુ, તેમની પત્ની ને બધુ સાફ થઈ ગયું. કાકા એકલા બચ્યા.  

આ ઘટનાનો આઘાત કાકાનું મન અને મગજ સહન ન કરી શક્યુ. મગજ અસ્થિર થયું. એમણે પૂના છોડ્યું. ટ્રેનમાં બેસી બસ મુસાફરી કર્યા કરે. ફરતાં ફરતાં એ રાજકોટ આવ્યા ને રેલવે સ્ટેશન પર રહી ગયા. 

લગભગ 25 વર્ષ આમ ગયા. 15 વર્ષ પહેલાં અચનાક સુધ બુધ આવી. પૂના પરત ગયા પણ ત્યાં તો પોતાનું કોઈ અસ્તિત્વ જ નહોતું રહ્યું. સગાઓને મળવાનું મન ન થયું. એ રાજકોટ પાછા આવ્યા ને મળે તે મજૂરી કરી જીંદગી ગુજારવા લાગ્યા. 

રાજકોટના ચુનારાવાડમાં એક ભાઈએ પોતાનું કાચુ મકાન કાકાને કોઈ ભાડા વગર રહેવા આપ્યું. મૂળ કાકાનો સ્વભાવ પરગજુ એટલે એ સૌ કોઈને એ વહાલા લાગે.. 

વર્ષો આમ નીકળી ગયા.હવે કાકાથી કામ નથી થતું. થોડો સમય સ્થાનીક કોઈ ટ્રસ્ટે ટીફીન આપ્યું પણ પછી એ અચાનક એ બંધ થયું. એ પછી તેમની વસાહતના ખોડુભાઈને અન્ય સૌ મદદે આવ્યા. વારા ફરથી કાકાને બધા જમાડે પણ કાકાને આ ગમે નહીં. પણ શરીર સાથ ન આપે એટલે ના છૂટકે ન ગમતુ પણ કરે. જો કે ખોડુભાઈ વિશેષ ધ્યાન આપે. બિમારીમાં પણ કાકાની સારવાર એ કરાવે. 

આવા કાકાને અમારા કાર્યકરો મળ્યા ને એમના બધા ડોક્યુમેન્ટ બનાવી આપ્યા. રાશનકાર્ડ, મતદારાકાર્ડ મળ્યા પછી વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન પણ મળવાનું શરૃ થયું. પણ કાકાને  કોઈની ઓશિયાળી ન ગમે એમની વાતોમાં પણ એ દેખાય..

અમારા કાર્યકર છાયાબહેને કાકાને અમારા માવજત કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત દર મહિને એમને ચાલે એટલું રાશન આપવા કહ્યું. કાકા સાંભળીને રાજી.. પણ જમવાનું કેવી રીતે બનાવશો? એ પુછતા કાકાની મદદે ખોડુભાઈ આવ્યા.  એમણે કહ્યું, 'તમને વાંધો ન હોય તો ત્રણે ટંકનું રાંધી અમે આપી જઈશું.' આમ પણ આર્થિક રીતે એવા સમૃદ્ધ નહીં છતાં ખોડુભાઈ કાકાનું ધ્યાન રાખતા એમને જમાડાય ખરા...(ફોટોમાં કાકા સાથે ખોડુભાઈને જોઈ શકાય)

અમે કાકાને પહેલી વાર રાશનકીટ આપી ત્યારે એમની આંખોમાંથી ઝળઝળિયા આવી ગયા. 

'એક વખત હતો જ્યારે હું સૌને આપતો આજે મારે....'

કાકા વધુ બોલી ન શક્યા..

કનુભાઈએ એમને દુઃખી ન થવા કહ્યું ને આ અમે અમારી ફરજના ભાગરૃપે કરીએ છીએ એ સમજાવ્યું. 

કાકાને દર મહિને રાશન આપવા જઈએ એ પછી એ રાશનની વિગતો ચોપડામાં લખે ને છેલ્લે ભગવાનનો આભાર માને...

લક્ષ્મીકાંત કાકા જેવા 156 માવતરોને અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપીયે છીએ.. આમ તો અમે કહેવા કરતા સમાજ સહયોગ કરે ને એમાંથી આ બધુ થાય... 

કુદરત શું કરી શકે તે અત્યારે આપણે અનુભવી રહ્યા છીએ.. 

કાકાને મળી ત્યારે પણ આજ અનુભવ થયેલો..

 “I have cooked dal-rice, but he is refusing to eat. How can he recover without eating? He is also feeling cold!!

After sharing this, she pointed towards her son lying on the charpoy next to hers and showed her son lying, shivering with cold under the blanket. Maheshbhai looked at me, he looked frail, as if age had caught up after long illness.

Laxmiben’s husband had passed away 15 years ago.  It was Mahesbhai who earned the living for his mother and self. And all of a sudden Mahesbhai fell ill.

“Is there anyone else in the family to take care of you?” we asked Laxmima.

The question brought tears into Laxmima. The air around grew thick with sorrow. We did not know how to respond!!

“Ma, please do not worry. We will take care of you, will ensure Maheshbhai receives proper treatment.” I assured

“Do not hospitalise him, who will take care of him at the hospital. Just get him treated and bring him back. I cannot…” Laxmi Ma  could speak no further.

“We shall do so, Ma!” I responded. I did not feel like saying anything more.

“I had another son, elder to Mahesh. He too developed some skin infection, the leg was swollen, he remained ill for some time and passed away before my eyes. And now it is him…” Laxmi Ma shared.

It is the children who take care of their parents but when parents need to become caregivers… it pains beyond comprehension.

VSSM, with the support it receives from its well-wishers, is providing ration kit to Laxmi Ma.

I was at Laxmi Ma’s to inquire if she needed anything else, but after witnessing the situation there was nothing more to ask.

What I witnessed today shook me, the mother-son duo living besides Nadiad’s Malarpur road surviving in a kuccha brick-clay house was utterly helpless, the condition they survived in was beyond comprehension.

I am grateful to VSSM’s Rajnibhai for identifying families who truly need our support.

We will be assisting Mahesbhai with his medical examination and further treatment.

Almighty, we are all your children, how can you put anyone under so much pain.  No one deserves to endure so much suffering. A prayer escapes my heart seeking protection for fellow brethren...

'આ જુઓને બેન દાળ-ભાત રાંધ્યા છે પણ આ ખાવાની જ ના પાડે છે.. ખાધા વગર તે કાંઈ ચાલે? પાછુ એને ટાઢેય ચડે છે' એમ કહીને એમણે પોતાના ખાટલાની બાજુમાં ગોદડુ ઓઢી ટુંટીયું વાળીને સુતેલા એમના દીકરાના મોંઢા પરથી ગોદડું હટાવ્યું ને મહેશભાઈ એ મારી સામે જોયું.. 

શરીર સાવ નંખાઈ ગયેલું. ઉંમર ઘણી નહીં હોય પણ લાંબી માંદગીના લીધે અકાળે વૃદ્ધ થઈ ગયેલા એ જણાયા.

નડિયાદમાં રહેતા લક્ષ્મી મા રાવળના ઘરવાળા 15 વર્ષ પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયા. એ વખતે મહેશભાઈ કમાઈને લાવતા ને મા- દીકરો જીવન ગુજારતા પણ અચાનક મહેશભાઈએ ખાટલો પકડ્યો. 

લક્ષ્મી માને કુટુંબમાં અન્ય કોઈ તમારુ ધ્યાન રાખવાવાળુ નથી? એવું પુછ્યું ને એમની આંખોમાંથી આંસુની ધારા વહેવા માંડી. ઘડીક તો વાતાવરણ ગમગીન થઈ ગયું. શું કહેવું કશું સમજાયું નહીં.

'મા ચિંતા ન કરો અમે ધ્યાન રાખીશું. મહેશભાઈને દવાખાને લઈ જવાનું પણ ગોઠવી દઈશું..'  એવું મે કહ્યું તો સામે એમણે કહ્યું, 

'એને દાખલ ન કરતાં. ઈન્જેકશ અલાઈન પાસો લઈ આવજો. દવાખાને એની ચાકરી કોણ કરે? અને મને એના વગર...' 

આગળ એ કશું બોલી ન શક્યા....

'હા એમ જ કરીશું મા' આનાથી વધારે કશુંયે પુછવાનું મને મન ન થયું ત્યાં એમણે કહ્યું, 

'મારે એક દીકરો હતો આના કરતાં મોટો પણ એનેય આની(મહેશભાઈ સામે આંગળી કરીને) જેમ પગમાં ખરજવું થયું ને પછી પગમાં સોજાને પછી લાંબી માંદગી. મારી નજર સામે જ એ ગુજરી ગયો.. હવે આની હાલત..'

બાળકો મા બાપની સેવા કરે એની જગ્યાએ માને  દીકરાની સેવા કરવાની... કાળજુ કેવું કંપતુ હશે આ માનું?

મા- દિકરો પેટ ભરીને ખાઈ શકે તે માટે VSSM સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્નેહીજનોની મદદથી અમે આમને દર મહિને રાશન આપીએ. તે રાશન બરાબર મળે છે. વધારે કશું જોઈએ છે કે કેમ? એ વિગત મેળવવા ને સાથે એમની ખબર પુછવા હું એમના ઘરે ગઈ પણ હાલત જોઈને બીજુ કશુંયે પુછી શકાયું નહીં.

ખેડાના નડિયાદમાં મલારપુરામાં રોડની બાજુમાં જ ઈંટ માટીમાંથી ચણેલાં કાચા છાપરાંમાં રહેતા આ બેઉંની સ્થિતિ જોઈને મનથી હલી જવાયું... કલ્પના પણ ના કરી શકીએ એવી સ્થિતિ છે આ બેઉની. 

અમારા કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈ જેમણે આ પરિવારને શોધી આપ્યો તેમનો આભાર માનુ છું.. 

મહેશભાઈને દવાખાને બતાવવાનું તો કરીશું ને એમની તકલીફમાં સાથે ઊભા રહેવાનું પણ વસુદૈવ કુટુંબકમઃમાં માનીએ એટલે કરીશું.. 

સાથે કુદરતને,  આ બધા તારા સંતાનો છે એમની આ તકલીફ તુ કેવી રીતે જોઈ શકે છે? માટે હે ઈશ્વર કર્મનો સિદ્ધાંત બરાબર છતાં આવી તકલીફમાં કોઈનેય ન મુક. આમ કોઈને નોંધારા ન કરની તને પ્રાર્થના...

 In 2004 while I was travelling across the villages of South Gujarat to study the condition of tribal working as workers on sugarcane farms I came across Gandhi cap-wearing elderly kaka who had tightly tied a stole around his waist.

“Kaka, why have you tied this stole around your waist?”

“So that I do not hear my hunger speak!”

It was difficult to even watch this elder gentlemen reeling under such situation.

“Governments across the world are searching for a stole like that!” I remember to have remarked  jokingly.

There was no one to look after Kaka. There are numerous such elderly living around us as well. They worked to fend themselves but now as age takes over and their energy levels don’t match up, they are in capable to put in hard labour through the day. Many such poor elderly take up begging. It pains to see such elderly human beings stretch their hands in distress, unable to live with dignity.

 I have always believed it is our responsibility to take care of this section of our population. Yes, they do get government pensions but they can hardly suffice the expenses towards food, medication and living!! A couple of years back VSSM initiated a program to feed and provide ration and food to the elderly. VSSM became instrumental in providing ration to 100 while cooking-feeding 15 seniors. We say instrumental because it is our well-wishing donors who support the initiatives.

Recently, VSSM’s Ramesh handed ration kits to 19 Devipujak families living in Saapar village in Amreli’s Bagasara. Some families take and secure their ration kits in a trunk as they have no other place to keep it safe.

Every time a team member reaches such families with ration they are showered with blessings.

 VSSM team members put in a lot of efforts to identify such deserving elderly. Hope we as a society can take up the responsibility of such small needs of the population around us, no one might have to sleep hungry.

2004માં હું દક્ષીણ ગુજરાતમાં શેરડી કામદારોની સ્થિતિ જાણવા આદિવાસીઓના ગામોમાં ફરી રહી હતી તે વેળા ગડત ગામમાં મને ગાંધી ટોપી પહેરી, પેટ પર કસકસાવીને કપડું બાંધલેું એવા એક કાકા મળ્યા. મે એમને પૂછ્યું કાકા કપડું કેમ બાંધ્યું છે ત્યારે કાકાએ કહેલું,

'ભૂખનો અવાજ સંભળાય નહીં એ માટે...'

કેવી કપરી સ્થિતિ.. ત્યારે જરા મજાકમાં કહેલું આવું કપડું તો વિશ્વભરની સરકારો શોધી રહી છે...

પણ આ કાકાની ચાકરી કરી શકે એવું પાછળ કોઈ હતું નહીં.

આપણી આસપાસ પણ આવા ઘણા વડીલો રહે છે. જેઓ મજૂરી કરીને પેટિયું રળતા. પણ હવે કામ થઈ શકે એવી સ્થિતિ નથી.. એટલે ભીખ માંગીને પુરુ કરે છે.. આવા માવતરોને જોવું ત્યારે જીવ બળી જાય..

સમાજ તરીકે આપણી ફરજ ખરી એવો પ્રશ્ન હંમેશાં થાય.. સરકાર પૈસા આપે પણ એનાથી ખાવા, પીવા, દવા વગેરે બધુ ન થાય...

અમે આવા વડીલોને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.

100 વડીલોને દર મહિને રાશન ને 15 જણને એક રસોડે જમવાનું આપવામાં VSSM નિમિત્ત બને છે..

આમ તો આ બધુ સંસ્થાને મદદરૃપ થતા પ્રિયજનોના સહયોગથી થાય.. અમે તો નિમિત્ત માત્ર..

તાજેતરમાં અમરેલીના બગસરામાં તેમજ સાપરગામમાં રહેતા સરાણિયા અને દેવીપૂજક સમુદાયના 19 પરિવારોને કાર્યકર રમેશના હસ્તે રાશન આપવામાં આવ્યું.

રાશન લેનાર કેટલાક તો રાશનને લઈને ટંકમાં તાળું મારીને મુકી દે છે. એમની પાસે અન્ય સગવડ આ રાશન સાચવવાની નથી..

ઢગલો આશિર્વાદ જ્યારે કાર્યકર એમના ત્યાં રાશન લઈને પહોંચે ત્યારે એ આપે..

કાર્યકરો પણ આવા વડીલોને શોધવા ભારે જહેમત ઊઠાવે... ખેર સમાજ તરીકે આપણે બધા ભેગા થઈને આવી નાની નાની જવાબદારીઓ સ્વીકારી લઈએ તો કોઈએ ભૂખ્યું સુવુ ન પડે...

 The orphaned and unprivileged children find numerous sponsors and angle guardians, but the elders who are rendered destitute because of age, poverty and children who have decided to look away,  have few empathisers. In Nava Deesa’s L. P. Savani Nagar there are 12 elderly who have no one to look after them. These people have worked hard, earned and raised families, they also begged when they were too weak to work but now they can barely get up and move. If someone is kind enough she/he comes and gives them food otherwise they just sleep with empty bellies. Some have lost their vision, some can’t walk, some have children who too are extremely poor to be able to take care of parents.

It is always said,  that it is a blessings to be born as human however, after watching the pain and misery of these elders a prayers escapes from within requesting almighty to not be born as human again.

We have initiated a community kitchen to provide lunch and dinner to these elderly of L. P. Savani Nagar. The cost per individual is Rs. 1600 per month.

માવતર અનાથ થયા છે. એમને જીવનની પાછલી અવસ્થા સુખેથી જીવવા મદદની જરૂર છે.

અનાથ અથવા તકવંચિત બાળકોના પાલક આજે ઘણા બને છે અને એ બાળકનો નિભાવ ખર્ચ પણ ઘણા આપે પણ આજે આપને એવા માવતરના પાલક બનવા વિનંતી કરી રહી છું. જેમનું આ દુનિયામાં કોઈ નથી.

નવા ડીસામાં એલ.પી. સવાણી નગરમાં 12 વડિલો રહે છે. જેમની સંભાળ રાખનાર કોઈ નથી. કામ થતુ તુ ત્યાં સુધી એમણે કર્યું. હાથ પગ નબળા પડ્યા પછી ભીખ માંગવાનું કર્યું. પણ હવે તો ચલાતુયે નથી. વસાહતમાંથી કોઈને દયા આવેને કોઈ ખવડાવી દે તો ચાલે. બાકી ભૂખ્યા રહેવાનું.

તમામ જીવ સૃષ્ટિમાં માણસનો અવતાર સૌથી શ્રેષ્ઠ એવું માનવામાં આવે પણ આ વડિલોને જોયા પછી આવો અવતાર જો શ્રેષ્ઠ કહેવાય તો ભગવાનને ફરી માણસ તરીકે જનમ ના આપવા વિનંતી કરુ..

કોઈ આંખે અંધ છે, કોઈ ચાલી શકતુ નથી. કોઈને દિકરા છે પણ એ પોતાનુ પુરુ કરી શકતા નથી એવામાં વડીલો તો પ્રાથમિકતામાં ક્યાંથી આવે?

અમે બપોર અને સાંજ આવા વડિલોને જમાડવાનું શરૃ કર્યું છે. એક વૃદ્ધનો માસીક ખર્ચ લગભગ 1600 આવે છે.

આપને બાળકની જેમ આ વડિલોના પાલક બનવા વિનંતી કરી રહી છું.

મહેરબાની કરી સરકારની વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન યોજના કે ફલાણી યોજનામાં જોડવાની સલાહ ના આપવા વિનંતી.

વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન મળે તો એમને દવા અને કપડાં કાજ કામ આવે.
