 "I got a paralytic attack. My face has got twisted. How will I sing Bhajans ? Whatever pain you want to give you can but just see that I am able to sing Bhajans in your praise till I die."

Gajraba from Village Chitrasar in Kheda District was for the first time asking some favour from the God. She became a widow at a very young age and raised six children single handedly. In Spite of all the difficulties she never asked for any favour from God. She never complained to Him. Her only wish was that God remain with her.

For the first time she prayed to God to help her recover from paralysis that struck her. God listened to her and she recovered.

Gajraba has lost five of her children in her lifetime. She is obviously very sad about it. One daughter is with her. However she faces great difficulties to get proper food. She doesn't like to ask anyone for help. Infact her self respect is such that if any hungry person comes to her, she will somehow manage to feed that person even if its the last grain in her storage.  . 

Such a lady unfortunately stays in a temporary shed. She desires a permanent home but she has no money for it. She never asked God about it. However God takes care of His disciples One day a brick layer came to her village. He asked Gajraba to take some broken bricks which were lying unused from which she could build her house.  

Gajraba built a good home out of the bricks she had. She even decorated the house. She said it seemed Lord Ram had come to help her build the house.

 Faith gives strength to a person to live life. When one meets Gajraba one can realise how true this statement is. Who would support Gajraba in her old age was a big question. She said "My God sent you" referring to me. With the help of all our donors like you we are able to give ration kit to Gajraba every month. Our associate Rajnibhai takes proper care of Gajraba.

'આ લકવો આલ્યો, મારુ મુઢુ વોકુ થઈ જ્યું તે મુ તારુ ભજન ચમનું ગઈશ? બીજુ જે દુઃખ આલવું હોય એ આલ પણ તારુ ભજન તો મુ મરતા હુદી ગાયા કરુ એવું કોક કર...'

ખેડાના ચિત્રાસરના ખુબ અભાવમાં રહેતા ગજરાબાએ  જિંદીગમાં પહેલીવાર ભગવાન પાસે કશુંક માંગ્યું. રહેવા સરખુ ઘર નહીં. ખુબ નાની ઉંમરે વિધવા થયેલા. છ સંતાનોને એમણે એકલે હાથે મોટા કર્યા છતાં ક્યારેય ભગવાન પાસે મને આવું આપજે, તેવું આપજે. આવું દુઃખ કેમ આપ્યું એવી કોઈ ફરિયાદ એમણે ક્યારેય કરી નહીં. બસ મારી સાથે રહેજે એ એક જ વાત ને એ જાણે રામને પ્રત્યક્ષ જુએ.. 

ગજરાબાને લકવો પડ્યો ને ભજન ગાવાનું બંધ થયું. ત્યારે પહેલીવાર ભજન ગાવા લકવો ઠીક કરવા પ્રાર્થના કરી ને ભગવાને એ પ્રાર્થના સાંભળી. એ લકવામાંથી બેઠા થઈ ગયા.

આવા ગજરાબાના પાંચ સંતાનો તેમની હાજરીમાં જ ગયા. એનું એમને ભારે દુઃખ. એક દિકરી એમની પાસે છે. પણ ખાવા પીવાની બાને ઘણી ઓશિયાળી. કોઈ પાસે માંગવું ગમે નહીં. અલબત કોઈ ભૂખ્યું એમના આંગણે આવે તો એને પાછા  ભૂખ્યા જવા પણ ન દે..

દાણા ભરવાની કોઠીમાં પડેલા દાણા ખતમ થઈ જાય તો છેલ્લે પડેલા દાણા ઉસેડીને એ ભૂખ્યા જનને આપે.

આવી પરોપકારની ભાવના રાખનાર ગજરાબા છાપરાંમાં રહેતા. મનમાં ભાવના પાક્કા ઘરની ખરી પણ પૈસા નહીં પણ ભગવાન પાસે એમણે ઘર ન માંગ્યું.

જો કે ભગવાન ભક્તોનું ધ્યાન રાખે. એક દિવસ ગામમાં ઈંટવાડો કરેલા એક ભાઈ આવ્યા ને ગજરાબાને ઈંટોના ટુકડા ઈંટવાડામાં પડ્યા છે એ લઈ જવા કહ્યું જેથી ઘર થઈ શકે. ઈંટોના એ ટુકડાથી ગજરાબાએ ગાર માટીનું સરસ ઘર કર્યું. એમણે એને સરસ સજાવ્યું પણ ખરુ. બા કહે, જાણે મારો રામ ઈંટો ચણવા આવ્યો હોય એવું એ વખતે તો લાગેલું..

શ્રદ્ધા માણસને જીવાડે એ વાત ગજરાબાને મળીએ ત્યારે સો ટકાની લાગે. બાને ઘડપણની લાઠી કોણ બનશે એ પ્રશ્ન હતો ને બા કહે, મારા રામે તમને મોકલી આપ્યા. VSSM તમારા સૌ સ્વજનોની મદદથી બાને દર મહિને રાશન આપે. અમારા કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈ બાનું બરાબર ધ્યાન રાખે...

Mittal Patel meets Sarojben in Piludra village

Life has been challenging for Sarojben from Sabarkantha’s Piludra; her hardships make her look quite old compared to her actual age. Having lost her husband at a very young age, the responsibility of raising Rupal, her daughter, fell upon her. Sarojben works as a farm labor to earn a living and educate Rupal, who is studying in 9th grade.

Since the last few years, Sarojben has lost her vision, and because of financial constraints, she has avoided going for a medical checkup. 

The responsibility of running the household, looking after Sarojben, and earing for the two fell on Rupal. Initially, she would take leave but eventually dropped out of the school

Pilundra’s Alpaben introduced us to Sarojben and suggested we provide them with the monthly ration kit.

Sarojben should also receive a widow pension; strangely, this daily wage earning lady received an income certificate above Rs. 1.20 lacs; hence she could not qualify for the widow pension.

We have begun sending ration kits to Sarojben. Very soon, we shall take her to the doctor to examine her eye, and if her vision returns, we will bring Rupal to our hostel.

સાબરકાંઠાના પિલુદ્રામાં રહેતા સરોજબેનની ઉંમર બહુ મોટી નહીં પણ વર્ષોથી ઢસરડા કરવાના લીધે એ નાની ઉંમરેય મોટા લાગે. એમને એક દિકરી રૃપલ જે હાલ નવમુ ધોરણ ભણે. સરોજબેનના પતિ થોડા વર્ષો પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયા. સરોજબહેન ખેતમજૂરી કરે અને મા-દીકરીનું ગુજરાન ચાલે. 

પણ છેલ્લા કેટલાક વખતથી સરોજબેનને આંખે દેખાતુ બંધ થયું. આર્થિક સ્થિતિ નબળી એટલે આંખોની તપાસ કરાવવાનું પણ એમણે કર્યું નહીં.

 રૃપલ ભણે પણ માના આંખોના અજવાળા ઓલવાયા પછી ઘર ચલાવવા એણે કામે જવું પડે. જરૃર પડે માને પણ મદદરૃપ થવું પડે આમ નિશાળમાં રજાઓ પડવા માંડી. આખરે એણે ભણવાનું જ મુકી દીધું.

 આ સરોજબેનનો પરિચય અમને ગામમાં રહેતા અલપાબહેને કરાવ્યો. એમણે કહ્યું, આ પરિવારને દર મહિને રાશન આપો તો એમને ઘણો ટેકો થાય. 

વિધવા સહાય સરોજબેનને મળવી જોઈએ પણ એ પણ મળે નહીં. મજૂરી કરીને નભતા આ પરિવારને આવકનો દાખલો 1.20 લાખની આવકનો વાર્ષિક મળ્યો એટલે વિધવા સહાય ન મળે. 

સ્થિતિ સમજી અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. સરોજબેનની આંખોની તપાસ કરાવવાનું પણ કરીશું. જો આંખો સાજી થાય તો રૃપલને અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા લઈ આવીશું. પણ આવા પરિવારોને મદદ કરી શકીએ છીએ એનો રાજીપો છે..અલપાબહેન અને અમારા કાર્યકર તોહીદનો આભાર. એમણે સરોજબહેનને શોધ્યા.

“Didi, we have requested them numerous times to come to the office, but they are not listening!”

VSSM’s Hiren and Madhubahen complained about the nomadic families of Dholka’s Chaloda village.

Kuvarjikaka stays in Chaloda settlement; he is a destitute elderly and receives a monthly ration kit from VSSM. Hiren often asks anyone to come and collect ration kit on their way to the settlement, yet no one would turn up despite Kuvarjikaka being their relative.

Ten families stay very far from the village; five have land allotted to them, and the rest don’t. All ten families have ration cards, but only 3-4 receive PDS ration.

If these families have documents like caste certificates and income proof, they can file applications for plots, and those who already have plots can file for house construction assistance. But all these processes can be completed only if they visit the office.

I met these families recently. “Why would we do that?” I questioned, to which none of them had any reply. But all of them promised to bring themselves anywhere Madhubahen and  Hirenbhai would call. Connecting the needy to government policies is at the core of VSSM’s activities.

After speaking to the families, I sat down to talk with Kuvarjikaka. “If we had listened to whatever you had said, we would have had a pucca house to stay in!” Currently, he lives in a hut that does not protect him from natural elements. The ration kit has relieved him from the worry of meals; he can at least cook and feed himself. “When this ration kit was unavailable, even if I was unwell I had to find work every day. The body is tired. I cannot work. The ration kit is sufficient to see through the month.” Kaka shared. 

Listening to such honest feedback makes all the effort worthwhile. I hope we reach more such people in need. You, too, can choose to help such elders.

'દીદી કેટલી વાર આ બધાને કચેરીએ આવવા કહ્યું પણ આવતા જ નથી...'અમારા હિરેન અને મધુબહેને ધોળકાના ચલોડાગામમાં રહેતા અમારા વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારોની ફરિયાદ કરતા કહ્યું. 

વસાહતમાં કુંવરજીકાકા રહે. નિરાધાર એમને અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપીયે. ઘણી વખત હિરેન વસાહતમાંથી કોઈને રાશન લેવા બોલાવે તોય એ લોકો ન આવે. આમ તો કુંવરજી કાકા આ બધાના સગા છતાં..

લગભગ 10 પરિવારો ગામથી ઘણા છેેટે રહે. તેમાંના પાંચ પાસે જે જગ્યા પર રહે તેની આકારણી ખરી જ્યારે બાકીના પાસે નહીં. રાશનકાર્ડનું પણ એવું દસે પાસે કાર્ડ ખરા પણ અનાજ ત્રણ ચારને જ મળે. 

જાતિપ્રમાણપત્ર, આવકનો દાખલો નીકળે તો જેમની પાસે પ્લોટ નથી તેમની પ્લોટ માટે અરજી થાય. ને આકારણી છે તેમના ઘર બાંધવા સહાય માટે અરજી કરી શકાય. પણ એ માટે એમને કચેરીયે આવવું પડે. 

બસ હમણાં આ પરિવારો પાસે જવાનું થયું ને આવું શું કામ કરીએ એ પુછ્યું. પણ જવાબ કોઈ પાસે નહોતો. પણ બધાએ વચન આપ્યું હવે મધુબહેન, હિરેન જ્યાં બોલાવશે ત્યાં જશુંનું...

આ અમારુ ખરુ કામ જરૃરિયાતવાળાને શોધી તેમને સરકાર સુધી પહોંચાડવાનું..

વસાહતના લોકો સાથે રામાયણ કરીને કુંવરજીકાકા સાથે બેઠી એમણે કહ્યું, તમે જે ક્યો એ બધુ પેલણથી હમજી ગ્યા હોત તો મારી પાહે મારુ ઘર હોત. એ હાલ છાપરાંમાં રહે. જેમાં ટાઢ, તડકો, વરસાદ ત્રણેયમાં તકલીફ પડે. પણ એમને અમારા રાશનથી રાહત છે. એ જાતે બનાવીને ખાઈ લે. કાકા કહે, આ રાશન નહોતું મળતું ત્યારે કામ થાય કે ન થાય ગામમાં હલો કરવા, ભેંસો ચરાવવા જતો.. પણ હવે શરીર થાક્યુ ક્યાંય ન જવું તો પણ ચાલે.. તમે આપો એમાં આરામથી મહિનો થઈ રહે..

સાંભળીને સારુ લાગ્યું... બસ આવા પરિવારોને મદદ કરીએ.. તમે પણ અમારા આ કાર્યમાં મદદરૃપ થઈ શકો...

Mittal Patel meets Doodhi Ma 

Doodhi (bottle- gourd in English), who must have named her so?

Doodhi Ma did not have the answer to it. However, she remembers being called 'unfortunate' as a child because of her abnormal limbs. Doodhi Ma is differently abled, and her mother's sympathy and care provided a comforting childhood. Still, as she grew up, the family expected her to work and contribute to family's income. So the young and handicapped Doodhi Ma began collecting junk and scrap off the streets.

Doodhi Ma reached marriageable age, but her physical deficiencies proved to be a deterrent to marriage. Suddenly the family receives a marriage proposal from a village near Gondal. The person offered to marry was a married man looking for a partner to give him heirs. If the parents had taken Doodhi Ma's permission, she would have refused the proposal, but her parents wanted to see her married while they were still alive and married off Doodhi Ma.

The married years were peaceful, Doodhi Ma birthed two sons, and just a few days after the second son's birth, her husband asked her to return to her parent's home in Tramba villae of Rajkot. Doodhi Ma argued a lot, but nothing worked; her husband now had the children he wanted, Doodhi Ma was not needed anymore.

Back home, Doodhi Ma's mother took care of her as her brother and sister-in-law wandered in search of livelihood. Both mother-daughter lived in a shanty, and Doodhi Ma collected junk to earn a few rupees at the end of the day. If there were no money coming, she would have to beg for some.

Doodhi Ma aged, her sons too would have grown into young men, but that chapter of her life never opened again.

Today, with her frail health and age, Doodhi Ma cannot walk long carrying the junk bag on her shoulders. So, as her body tires,   begging has taken precedence over picking junk.

Pratap living in Tramba's Vansfoda settlement, informed us about Doodhi Ma. VSSM's Kanubhai and Chayaben met her and decided to provide her with the monthly ration kit.

"What would you do if you could not go out to beg?" I asked Doodhi Ma when I recently met her in Tramba.

"What else could I do? I would quell my hunger with water!" she smiled.

I had no words to comfort her. The Mavjat initiative, with the support VSSM's donors provide, brings well-being to hundreds of elders like Doodhi Ma.

 દૂધી કોણે આવું નામ પાડ્યું હશે? 

આનો જવાબ દૂઘી મા પાસે નહોતા. પણ નાનપણથી બધા એને બિચારી કહેતા. મૂળ હાથ અને પગ સામાન્ય બાળકો જેવા નહોતા. હમણાં હમણાંથી આવી ક્ષતીવાળા વ્યક્તિઓને દિવ્યાંગ કહેવાનું શરૃ થયું છે. તે એ રીતે દૂધીમા દિવ્યાંગ.

મા લાડ લડાવે. પણ દૂધીમાની ઉંમર થઈ એટલે સૌ દૂધીમા કામ કરે એવું ઈચ્છે. અન્ય કામ કરવાની એમની  ક્ષમતા નહીં તે એમણે એ જ્યાં રહેતા હતા તેની આસપાસમાં ભંગાર, કાગળિયા વગેરે વીણવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. 

ઉંમર થઈ બીજી છોકરીઓના લગ્ન થયા. પણ દૂધીમાની શારિરીક ખામીઓ બધાની નજરે ચડે ને કોઈ એમને પસંદ ન કરે. ત્યાં એક દિવસ ગોંડલની બાજુના કોઈ ગામથી તેમનું માંગુ આવ્યું. માંગુ નાખનાર વ્યક્તિ પરણીત તેની પહેલી પત્ની પણ હયાત. પણ એ વંશવેલો આગળ વધારી શકતી નહોતી. એટલે એના પતીએ બીજા લગ્નનું નક્કી કર્યું. હયાત પત્ની પર કોણ જવા તૈયાર થાય?

દૂધીમાની મરજી પૂછી હોત તો કદાચ એ પણ ના પાડત પણ મા-બાપે પોતાના બેઠા બેઠા દીકરીનું ગોઠવાઈ જાય એમ વિચારી એ માણસ સાથે દૂધીમાના લગ્ન કરી નાખ્યા અને એમને સાસરે વળાવી દીધા.

દૂધીમાનો સંસાર શરૃ થયો. કોઈ કંકાસ નહોતો. થાય એ કામ એ કરતા. દૂધીમાએ બે દિકરાને જન્મ આપ્યો. બીજો દિકરો જનમ્યો અને એના થોડા દિવસમાં જ એમના પતિએ દૂધી માને એમના પિયર રાજકોટના ત્રાાંબાગામ જવા કહી દીધું. એમણે દલીલ ઘણી કરી પણ કશું વળ્યું નહીં. લગ્ન જ બાળકો માટે થયેલા તે એ કાર્ય પૂર્ણ થયું પછી દૂધીમાની એમને શું જરૃર?

પિયરમાં માએ એમને સાચવ્યા. ભાઈ-ભાભી ખરા પણ એ લોકો કામ ધંધા માટે ત્રાંબા બહાર રહે. મા છાપરુ વાળી રહે એમના ભેગા દૂધી મા રહે. ને પહેલાની જેમ ભંગાર ભેગુ કરે. ભંગાર વેચે એમાંથી કાંઈ બહુ ઝાઝુ ન મળે તે એ ના છૂટકે ભીખ પણ માંગે. બસ આ એમની જિંદગી..

ઉંમર વધતી ચાલી. દૂધીમાના દીકરાઓ મોટા થયા પણ એમણે કે એમના ઘરવાળાએ ક્યારેય એમની ભાળ ન કાઢી. 

દૂધી મામની હવે તો ઉંમર થઈ. હવે ખભે ભંગારનો કોથળો લઈને ઝાઝુ ચાલી ન શકે. હવે વીણવા કરતા માંગવાનું એમનું વધ્યું. શરીર પણ થાક્યું. 

આવા દુધીમા અંગે ત્રાંબાની વાંસફોડા વસાહતના અમારા પ્રતાપે અમને જાણ કરી અને અમારા છાયાબહેન અને કનુભાઈ દૂધીમાને મળ્યા ને એ પછી અમે દૂધી માને દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. 

હમણાં એમને મળી ત્યારે પુછ્યું કે, ક્યારેક માંગવા ન જવાય તો શું કરો તો હસીને કહ્યું,

હું કરુ? પાણી પીને બેહી રહુ... !

સામે હું કશુંયે બોલી ન શકી, પુછી શકી. પણ આવા માવતરોને સાતા આપવાનું સુખ બહુ મોટુ.. તમે સૌ મદદ કરો છો માટે આ માવતરોને અમે સાતા આપવામાં નિમિત્ત બની શકીએ છીએ. આપની લાગણીને પ્રણામ અને આવા કાર્યમાં મદદ માટે 9099936013 પર સંપર્ક કરવા વિનંતી.

Mangu Ma resides in Ridrol village in Gandhinagar.

“Welcome, ben!” Mangu Ma called from afar; her thunderous voice astounded me. “Why do we need to give Mangu ma a monthly ration kit?” I had wondered.

But as I reached closer, I. noticed her inability to walk.

“Is there anyone to care for you?” I inquired.

“Ben, I never had children!”

I had nothing more to ask. Mangu Ma receives a widow pension, and we provide her a monthly ration kit. She cannot bend her leg but manages to cook sitting on a chair.

“May God Bless you all; no one shows such compassion these days!”

“There is a supreme power that knows it all; hence it sent us to care for you!” we responded.

She held my hand and showered her affection on me.

“There is a lady who stays behind my house; her fate is worse than mine. I have a house to stay in, but she doesn’t even have that. Can you go see her before leaving?” requested Mangu Ma.

Mangu Ma reflected compassion; she was talking about Dhudi Ma. We had plans to see her, but it felt good when Mangu Ma directed us to help others in need. Usually, there is a sense of envy, and work for the well-being of others is a rarity.

Ridrol’s Kiranbhai volunteers to help us identify elders in need. It was he who led us to Mangu Ma and other elderlies. VSSM’s Rizwan looks after these elders once the connection has been established. He brings them the monthly ration kits.

 'એ આવો બેન..' એવી બૂમ અમારાથી ઘણે છેટે ઊભેલા મંગુમાએ પાડી..એમનો પહાડી અવાજ સાંભળી ઘડીક તો આમને આપણે કેમ અનાજ આપીયે? એ હજુ કામ કરી શકે એમ છે એવું થયું.પણ પછી નજીક પહોંચી ત્યારે ખ્યાલ આવ્યું કે એમનાથી ચલાતુ નથી પગ વળતો નથી. ગાંધીનગરના રિદ્રોલમાં મંગુ મા રહે. મે પુછ્યું, 'તમારુ ધ્યાન રાખે એવું કોઈ?''બેન પેટ મોડ્યું જ નહીં..'હવે વધારે કશું પુછવાનું નહોતું. એમને માસીક પેન્શન મળે ને અમે આપીયે એ રાશનકીટ તે એમને હવે શાંતિ થઈ ગઈ. પગ વળતો નથી તે ખુરશીમાં બેઠા બેઠા પોતાનું રાંધી લે. એમણે કહ્યું, 

'ભગવોન તમારા બધાનું ખુબ હારુ કરે. નકર આ કળજુગમો કુણ ધ્યોન રાખ..'અમે કહ્યું, 'ધ્યાન રાખવાનું તો કુદરત કરે માટે જ અમને મોકલી આપ્યા.'એમણે હાથ પકડ્યો.. એક જુદી રીતે વહાલ વર્ષાવ્યું. અમે જવા કહ્યું તો એમણે કહ્યું, 

'મારા ઘર પાછળ મારા જેવી જ દુઃખી બઈ હ્. માર તો રેવા ઘર હ્ પણ ઈનું તો... તમે એક ફેરા જોતા જો..'

મંગુમાની આંખોમાં કરુણા હતી. એ જેમની વાત કરતા હતા તે ધુળી મા.. એમને પણ મળવાનું હતું. પણ મને ગમ્યું કે એ એમની તકલીફની સાથે અન્યોની પણ સમજે છે ને કોઈ એમને પણ સહારો આપે એ માટે આંગળી ચીંધે છે. સામાન્ય રીતે માણસમાં ઈર્ષાભાવ હોય એટલે આવું આંગળી ચિંધવાનું ઘણી વખત ન થાય..

ખેર રિદ્રોલમાં રહેતા કીરણભાઈ સ્વયમસેવક તરીકે અમને મદદ કરે. તેમણે જ મંગુ મા અને અન્ય માવતરોને શોધી આપ્યા. બાકી અમારો કાર્યકર રીઝવાન વખતો વખત એમનું ધ્યાન રાખે... ને તમે સૌ આવા માવતરોને રાશન આપવામાં મદદ કરો...

Seventy plus years old Aamu Ma resides in Ahmedabad’s Odhav locality with her son and daughter. Both her children are mentally challenged. After the death of her husband, the responsibility of earning for the family has fallen on Aamuben. Currently, Aamu Ma makes her living by inserting pajama strings. She brings homework from a factory; it is a kind of work for which even her mentally challenged son be helpful. The earnings are enough to bring food to the table.

However, it is also a compulsion. Even when Aamu Ma feels unwell, she needs to continue working; otherwise, there would not be anything to eat. Saving money for a rainy day is a privilege this family does not enjoy.

After VSSM’s Madhuban and Hirenbhai learned about Aamu Ma’s condition, we began providing a monthly ration kit to the family. “The needs are endless, but the ration kit is great support.

આમુમાં અમદાવાદના ઓઢવામાં રહે. સંતાનમાં એક દીકરો ને એક દીકરી. પણ બેઉં માનસીક અસ્થિર. આમુમાની હાલ ઉંમર સીત્તેરથી વધારે. પતિ જીવતા ત્યાં સુધી ઘર ચલાવવામાં આમુમાને મદદ કરતા. આમુમા પાયજામામાં નાડા નાખવાનું કામ ફેક્ટરીમાંથી લાવે. આખો દિવસ એ કામ કરે ને એમનો ગુજારો થાય. એમનો દિકરો માનસીક વિકલાંગ પણ એ આમુમાને થોડી મદદ પણ કરે.

આવા આમુમા બિમાર પડે કે કામ કરવાનું મન ન થાય તે વખતે પણ ના છૂટકે કામને વળગ્યા રહે. મૂળ કામ ન કરે તો એ દિવસનો ચૂલો ન સળગે. બચત જેવું તો આ પરિવાર પાસે કશુંયે નહીં..એમની સ્થિતિ અમારા કાર્યકર મધુબહેન અને હીરેનના ધ્યાનમાં આવી અને અમે રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. આમુ મા રાજી છે. એ કે છે, જરૃરિયાતનો અંત નથી પણ આ ટેકો અમને ત્રણેયને ટકાવે છે..

આવા માવતરોને સાતા આપવાનું અમે કરીએ છીએ... જેમાં આપ સૌ સહયોગ કરો છો.. આપ સૌની આ લાગણી માટે આભારી છીએ...

“Look at me; don’t I look healthier than before?”

I was surprised when hearing-impaired Diva Ma from Gandhinagar’s Ridrol asked this question. I had been speaking very loudly, asking her if the ration reached her on time, was it sufficient? But Ma kept complaining of her inability to hear me.

“I am at peace now that I am getting food, and I have also grown healthier!” Diva Ma shows me her arms to show she has put on some weight because of eating regular meals.

When I asked her using hand gestures when I should visit her next, she told me to come next month with her ration kit.

This work that brings peace to destitute elderlies also gives us peace and joy. With the support and donations we receive from you, 316 elderlies have found a ray of hope during their silver years. And we are grateful for your kind gesture.

આ જુઓ મારુ શરીર પેલાં કરતાં હારુ થ્યું..'

આમ તો કાને એકદમ ઓછુ સાંભળતા ગાંધીનગરના રિદ્રોલના દિવામાએ આવું કહ્યું ત્યારે નવાઈ લાગી. 

હું એમને વારંવાર અને બહુ મોટેથી બોલીને પુછતી હતી કે તમને રાશન બરાબર મળે છે? આખો મહિનો ચાલી જાય છે. પણ બા,

'મન હોભળાતુ નહીં હોભળાતું નહીં' જ બોલે જતા હતા.છેવટે મે પુછવાનુ બંધ કર્યું ત્યારે એમણે જાતે કહ્યું, 

'ખાવા મલહ્ તે શોંતીહ્ અન મારુ શરીરેય હારુ થ્યું.' એમ કહીને એમણે પોતાના હાથ બતાવ્યા. 

હવે પાછી ક્યારે આવું તેવું ઈસારાથી પુછ્યું ત્યારે કહ્યું મહિને આવજો ને રાશન લઈને આવજો...સાંભળીને મજા પડી...

આવા નિરાધાર માવતરોને સાતા આપવાનું કામ અમે કરીએ. જે મનને શાંતિ આપવાનુ છે...

તમે સૌ સાથે છો માટે આવા 316 માવતરોને રાશન આપવાનું અમે કરી શકીએ છીએ.. આપ સૌની લાગણી માટે આભારી છું.

“I cannot walk;  I have put on too much weight. I do whatever little chores I can with my limited strength. Going out to work is not an option I have.”

“Who takes care of you?”

“Almighty!!”

“Anyone in the family?”

“One daughter, she is married and stays at her in-laws.”

“Why don’t you stay…”

“She can barely manage her expenses. I might have thought it if she was alone, but her in-laws stayed with her. It doesn’t look nice. ” Laxmi Ma had replied before I could complete my sentence.

“How do you manage your expenses? Do you receive an elderly pension?”

“People from this neighborhood bring me food; how much does one need?”

“Do you like others bringing you food?”

“No one would like to survive on the sympathy of others, but do I have a choice?”

Laxmi Ma resides in Gandhinagar’s Chadala village. Since she cannot go out to work and there is no one in her family to care for her, VSSM provides a monthly ration kit under its Mavjat initiative.

“Is the ration enough to last a month?” I inquired.

“Of course!” Laxmi Ma replied.

“I pray to almighty to give me eternal rest!” Laxmi Ma had told me while I was leaving.

It pains us to see the plight of such destitute elderly who spend the fag end of their lives, awaiting death to end their journey. However, we feel grateful for our opportunity to help these elderly experience peace during their silver years.

‘આ શરીર ભારે થઈ ગ્યું છે. હવે ચલાતુ નથી. આમ ઢસડીને ઘરનું નાનુ મોટુ કામ કરુ. બાકી કામે જવાય એવી સ્થિતિ હવે નથી’

‘તો તમારુ ધ્યાન કોણ રાખે?’

‘ઉપરવાળો’

‘પરિવાર?’

‘એક દિકરી છે. એના લગ્ન થઈ ગયા એ સાસરે રે’

‘તો તમે એની સાથે... મારુ વાક્ય પુરુ થાય એ પહેલાં જ લક્ષ્મીમાએ કહ્યું, એ એનું માંડ પુરુ કરે. પાછુ એ એકલી રેતી હોત તો કદાચેય જાત પણ એના સાસુ સસરા સાથે રહે તે એવામાં હું જઈને રહુ તો સારુ ન લાગે’

‘તો હાલ પુરુ કેમ થાય. વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન મળે છે? ‘

‘આ વાહ(જ્યાં એ રહે છે) એ લોકો થોડુ ઘણું આપી જાય તે ચાલે જાય. હવે આ મનખાને જોઈએ કેટલું?’

‘બીજા આપે એ ગમે?’

‘ઓશિયાળી તો કોને ગમે? પણ છૂટકો નથી...’

લક્ષ્મી મા ગાંધીનગરના ચલાડામાં રહે. પરિવારમાં ધ્યાન રાખે એવું કોઈ નથી. અમે એમને ઓશિયાળી વેઠવી ન પડે એ માટે દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું કરીએ. 

રાશન આખો મહિનો ચાલી જાય એવું પુછ્યું તો કહે, ‘હા ચાલી જાય. જુઠ શું કામ બોલું’

એમને મળીને નીકળી રહી હતી ત્યારે કહે, ભગવાનને રોજ પ્રાર્થના કરુ છું હવે ઝટ લઈ લે તો સારુ...

મૃત્યુ આપણા હાથની વાત ક્યાં પણ આવા નિરાધાર માવતરોની સ્થિતિ જોઈ જીવ બળે. બસ તેમના અંતરને ટાઢક આપવાનો પ્રયત્ન આપ સૌ સ્વજનોની મદદ થકી અમે કરીએ.

"Ben, next time you are in Harij,   I want you to meet a Ba whom we have been providing a ration kit every month." Mohanbhai had requested.

And that is what I did. We reached Vansa, walking through a paved lane. We arrived at a front yard gate and walked slightly uphill to find some people gathered around a house. The Ba whom we had to meet was seated on the floor dressed in an orange saree. The folks gathered around were Dahi Ma's maternal family. Vision-impaired Dahi Ma doesn't have a house, and she stays in a small makeshift place whose tinned roof leaks during monsoons. So it has been a challenged existence for Dahi Ma.

Dahi Ma's husband passed away long back, and her young son, too, had died three years ago. Hence, her family had come by to help her repair her shade by replacing the tinned roof with a cement roof rested on concrete rests. Dahi Ma's eyes had welled up when she remembered her son/ Although her family had been persuading her to come to stay with them, she to leave the soil her son had lived upon was not an option she wanted.

Sureshbhai had shared a word about destitute Dahi Ma to VSSM's Mohanbhai. Dahi Ma would beg for food, and Sureshbhai would provide in whichever way he could, but that was not enough. Since he knew about VSSM's Mavjat initiative, Sureshbhai requested to give a monthly ration kit to Dahi Ma. Eventually, we began sending a ration kit to Dahi Ma.

Dahi Ma manages to cook with the ration that reaches her; she no longer needs to beg for food.

"How are you Dahi Ma?" I inquired.

"It has been a great relief now that you have helped with the ration kit. I don't need to stretch my hand for food." Dahi Ma had said with tears rolling down her eyes. "The family will build a roof over my head, but it will not protect me from cold and rains." Dahi Ma wished for a small room to protect her from the elements.

As I bid her farewell,  I assured her of helping her build a tiny house. I had the strength to give her this assurance because of our donors' faith in us. It is challenging to spend the later years of life yearning for basic needs to be sufficed. Nevertheless, we will fulfil her need for a small house.

“બેન આપણે એક બાને રાશનની કીટ આપીએ છીએ. એમને તમે હારીજ આવો છો તો મળી લઈએ. તમે એમને ખાસ મળો એવો મારો આગ્રહ છે”

આમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈએ આ કહ્યું ને અમે પહોંચ્યા વાંસા. પાક્કી સડકવાળી એક શેરીમાં ચાલતા ચાલતા એક વાડનું કડલું ખસેડી અમે ઢાળ ચડ્યા તો કેટલાક માણસો ત્યાં ઊભેલા. જે બાને મળવાનું હતું તે કેસરી સાડી પહેરીને ભોંય પર બેઠેલા. જે માણસો આવ્યા હતા તે આ ડાહીમાના પિયરીયા. ડાહી મા પાસે ઘર નહીં. એ ઢાળિયામાં રહે. પણ ઢાળિયાના પતરા કાણા. ચોમાસામાં એમાંથી પાણી પડે. એટલે એ ખૂબ હેરાન થાય. વળી ડાહીમાને આંખે દેખાતું નથી.

પિયરીયા કાંઈ સક્ષમ નથી પણ સીમેન્ટના પતરાંને થાંભલીઓ લઈને એ ઢાળિયું બનાવી આપવા આવેલા. 

ડાહીમાના પતિ વર્ષો પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયા. જુવાન દીકરો ત્રણેક વર્ષ પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયો. પણ એનો આઘાત ડાહીમાને ઘણો. એ દીકરાને યાદ કરી રડ્યા કરે.પિયરીયાએ પોતાના ત્યાં રહેવા આવવા કહ્યું પણ ડાહીમા કહે, જ્યાં મારો દીકરો મોટો થયો એ ભોમકા કેમ છોડાય?

એ નિરાધાર. 

ગામના સુરેશભાઈએ મોહનભાઈનો ડાહીમા સાથે પરિચય કરાવ્યો. તેઓ ગામમાંથી માંગીને ખાતા. સુરેશભાઈ પણ શક્ય મદદ કરે. પણ એનાથી ચાલે નહીં. અમે આવા નિરાધાર માવતરોને દર મહિને તેમને ચાલે એટલું રાશન આપીયે એવી સુરેશભાઈને ખબર ને એટલે એમણે ડાહીમાને રાશન આપવા વિનંતી કરી. ને અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.

ડાહી મા એ રાશનથી રસોઈ કરી ખાય. આખો મહિનો રાશન ચાલી જાય છે એમને કોઈ પાસે માંગવા જવું નથી પડતું. ડાહી માને તમે કેમ છો એમ પુછ્યું તો એ રડી પડ્યા. ઓશિયાળી વેઠવાની તમે મદદ કરો તે હખ છે હવે એવું એમણે કહ્યું. એમની ઈચ્છા એક ઓરડી જેવું ઘર બને એવી. ઢાળિયું પિયરીયા બનાવી આપશે પણ એમાં ડાઢ ન રોકાય ને વરસાદની વાછઠ તો આવે..

હું એમને મળીને નીકળી ત્યારે કહેતી આવી કે અમે ઘર બાંધી આપવામાં મદદ કરીશું. મદદનો ભરોષો તમે સૌ અમને મદદ કરશોના આધારે આપ્યો... પણ આખુ જીવન આમ વલવલતું કાઢ્યું એમની ઈચ્છા ઘરની તો પુરી જ કરવી જ રહી. 

તમે પણ ડાહીમાનું ઘર બાંધી આપવા શક્ય મદદ કરજો.. સાથે મળીને એકમને ઘર બાંધી આપીશું. મદદની રકમ 9099936013 પર પેટીએમ કરી શકાય. અથવા નીચેના બેંક એકાઉન્ટમાં પણ ભરી શકાય.

Mittal Patel meets Hiteshbhai

                            

"As the wise saying goes – reap what you sow; I am enduring the results of my Karma. I once used to be a satta-matka gambler. I earned in lacs and was very generous with donations. But my occupation also ruined many families. The reason I am facing such difficult times is my bad Karma. Being a baniya I should never have got into such an illicit profession; unfortunately, I had lost my way." Hiteshbhai's voice choked as he narrated his current condition. I was seated in front of him but couldn't gather words to console him. Both of us remained in silence for a while. Finally, Hiteshbhai gained composure and began talking, "I became very ill; my blood sugar levels shot up. When one of my legs had to be amputated, I questioned my path and gave up my unlawful occupation. I continued to help others and gave away whatever why I had. The empty house and my brother are all I have now!" Hiteshbhai shares as he points at his autistic brother Alkeshbhai.

Given his mental condition, Alkeshbhai clings to Hiteshbhai,  like a child attached to his mother.

"I want him to pass on before I do. I won't be able to die in peace if I go before him." The brothers share a strong bond. 

Their economic condition is so bad that they cannot afford two meals a day, and both cannot work. So an arrangement is made at a Jain lodge where both could go and eat. But the dinner menu of khichri-kadhi was not fit for Hiteshbhai, who is diabetic. So he would buy Parath-sabji for Rs. 50-60 from a lodge in the neighbourhood. The sisters and nephews in the family also would help from time to time. But they still would fall short of money as there were medical expenses to support.

Looking at their condition and need, we had increased the support from Rs.. 1400 to Rs. 2500. "I am a baniya by birth, and I should be giving, not receiving. But this is enough!" Hiteshbhai responded when asked if the amount would be sufficient.

Hitesbhai believes in serving all living beings, he has arranged for water and feed for the  birds in front of his house, if some organisation donates food for cows, he takes the responsibility of feeding them, and the grains he gets through his ration card is also given away to families in need, "I give away because I don't need these supplies and my dharma (moral duties) will not allow me to sell it!"

Listening to Hiteshbhai's life events, the numerous stories I have read of princes turning into paupers came to life. While many never experience remorse for their wrongdoings, Hiteshbhai is repenting for his bad Karma. The almighty will surely forgive him for that; also, the blessings he has accumulated by taking such good care of his younger brother will help him seek forgiveness from the almighty.

 'કરેલા કર્મ નડ્યા વગર નથી રહેતા.. વલ્લી મટકા રમાડતો ત્યારે લાખો કમાતો લોકોને છુટા હાથે મદદેય ઘણી કરી. પણ કેટલાયાના ઘર એ વખતે મારા આ ધંધાના લીધે ઉજડ્યા. તે હાલ જે ભોગવું એ એનું કર્મ. આમ તો વાણિયાનો દીકરો આવા કામોમાં કોઈ દી નો પડે. પણ મારી મતી ફરી ગયેલી તે....'

આટલું કહેતા હીતેશભાઈના ગળે ડૂમો ભરાયો.. એ ઘડીક ચુપ રહ્યા. હું એમની સામે બેઠેલી. એમની વાત સાંભળી મારે શું કહેવું એ મનેય ન સમજાયું. હું મૌન રહી ત્યાં એમણે સ્વસ્થતા કેળવી પાછુ કહ્યું, 

'જ્યારે ભયંકર બિમાર પડ્યો. ડાયાબીટીસ ખુબ વધ્યું, પગ કપાવવાનો વારો આવ્યો ત્યારે જાણે ભાન થઈ.. બધુ મુક્યું. માંગતા જે આવ્યા એ બધાને જે હતું તે બધુ આપ્યું. બસ હવે આ ખોખુ મારી પાસે છે ને આ મારો ભાઈ.'એમ કહીને પાસે બેઠેલ એમના નિજાનંદીભાઈને બતાવ્યા. 

અલ્કેશભાઈની માનસીક સ્થિતિ નબળી. એ હિતેશભાઈની આસપાસ જ રહે. બાળક કેવું માને વળગીને રહે અદ્લ એ રીતે. 

હીતેશભાઈ કહે, 'મારી પહેલાં આ જાય ને તો સારુ. એ વાંહે રહી જશે તો મારો જીવ હખેથી નહીં જાય.' બે ભાઈઓ વચ્ચે અદભૂત પ્રેમ.. 

આર્થિક સ્થિતિ બે ટંક પોત મેળે જમી શકે એવી નથી.વળી  કામ થઈ શકે એ સ્થિતિ પણ નથી. જૈન ભોજનશાળામાં જમવાનું મળે એ માટેની ગોઠવણ કોઈએ કરી આપેલી. પરિવારમાં બહેન, ભાણેજ વગેરે થાય તે નાની મોટી મદદ કરે છતાં તૂટો તો પડે. 

વળી ભોજનશાળામાં સાંજે ખીચડી, કઢી એવું આપે એમને ખીચડી ડાયાબીટીસના કારણે ખવાય નહીં. તે પોતાના ઘરની બાજુમાં આવેલી લોજમાં જઈને સાંજે પચાસ - સાહીઠ રૃપિયામાં શાક, પરોઠા લઈ આવે. પાછી બેઉ ભાઈઓની દવાઓ પણ ચાલે..

અમે મહિને 1400નો ટેકો કરતા. પણ સ્થિતિ જોઈને 2500નો ટેકો કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું.. જ્યારે અમે કહ્યું કે આટલી રકમ ચાલશે. ત્યારે એમણે કહ્યું, 'વાણિયાનો દીકરો તો દેતો સારો લાગે આમ કોઈ પાહેથી માંગવું ગમે? પણ આટલું ઘણું..'

સુરેન્દ્રનગરના હીતેશભાઈએ પોતાના ઘરની સામે પક્ષીઓ માટે પાણી અને ચણની વ્યવસ્થા ગોઠવી છે. કોઈ સંસ્થા ગાયો માટે રોટલા આપે તે એ લઈ આવે ને ગાયોને આપે. એમની પાસે રાશકાર્ડ છે એ રાશનકાર્ડ પર મળતું અનાજ એ ગામના કોઈ દુઃખી વ્યક્તિને આપી દે છે. એ કહે, મારે એ ખપનું નથી ને વેચુ તો ધરમ લાજે... 

રાજાને રંક થતાનું વાર્તાઓમાં વાંચ્યુ હતું પણ હીતેશભાઈએ એમની જાહોજલાલીની વાતો કરી ત્યારે બધુ પ્રત્યક્ષ થયું ને ત્યાંથી હાલની સ્થિતિ પણ જોઈ...

Mittal Patel meets Balu Ma

Balu Ma stays in a tattered tin-roofed house perched between two pucca homes in Harij town of Patan district.

“Ben, we have to go meet Balu Ma.” Mohanbhai, my team-mate tells me. Balu Ma was walking around in her front yard we called her,  but she could not hear us. We walked up to her and asked her something that she would love. She was delighted to see us, she kissed my hands and just like a mother,  she showered me with great affection.

“If  I am in Harij,  how can I not come and meet you?” I chat with  her.

“Glad you did, Mohanbhai had mentioned about your visit to Harij, but he had told me that you would be at the city centre, so I walked with great difficulty to come see you, but couldn’t find you!!

“You did not have to come to see me, I was going to come to meet you.”

“You have eased my life, but I pray to God to call me to him. I am tired of living like this.”

Balu Ma’s eyes well up while saying this, and so did ours. I had met Balu Ma second time. Mohanbhai, Pareshbhai, I and others take care of Balu Ma and have become her family now, that is the reason she opens up with us to shares her joys and pain.

The more we work with the elderly the more we realise that it is challenging to spend old age without the care and support from loved ones. Elders like Balu Ma reaffirm that realisation. VSSM has decided to provide warmth and support to elders in need and will continue to do so…

બાલુ મા...

પાટણના હારીજમાં બે પાક્કા ઘરની વચ્ચે પતરાંવાળા કાચા ઘરમાં રહે. અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈએ કહ્યું, બેન આપણે એમને મળવા જવાનું છે. તે અમે એમના ઘરે પહોંચ્યા. ઘરની ઓશરીમાં એ આમ તેમ ઘીમે પગલે ફરતા હતા. અમે એમને બુમ પાડી પણ એમને કાને ઓછુ સંભળાય. છેવટે એમની ઓશરીમાં જઈને બાલુમા મજામાં એવું પુછ્યું. 

અમને જોઈને એ રાજી રાજી થઈ ગયા. મારો હાથ એમણે ચૂમ્યો. મારા ગાલ અને શરીર પર એમણે વહાલથી હાથ ફેરવ્યો. એમનું વહાલ મા એના બાળક માટે હેત વર્ષાવે એવું.

મે એમને કહ્યું, 

'હારીજ આવી હતી તે તમે આવ્યા તે મળવા આવી'

'બહુ હારુ કર્યું. મને મોહનભાઈએ કહ્યું તુ કે તમે આવશો. પણ એ તો કે'તાતા કે તમે બજાર આવશો તે હું તો ધેમ ધેમ છેક બજાર પોગી. થાકી ગઈ.. પણ તમે ના મલ્યા'

'હું અહીંયા આવવાની હતી. તમારે બજાર નહોતું આવવાનું...'

'તમે મને હખ કરી દીધું.. પણ હવે ભગવાન ઝટ લઈ જાય તો સારુ.. થાકી છું...'

બાલુ મા બોલતા હતા તે વેળા એમની આંખોના ખૂણા ભીના થઈ ગયા ને એમને જોઈને અમારા પણ.. એમને હું બીજીવાર મળી રહી હતી. પણ હવે હું, મોહનભાઈ, પરેશભાઈ વગેરે જે એમને સાચવે છે એમની સંભાળ લે છે એ એમનો પરિવાર બની ગયા છીએ. એટલે એ સુખ દુઃખની વાત અમને કહે છે..

ઘડપણ એ પણ કોઈ સ્નેહીજનના સાથ વગર કાઢવું ઘણું કપુરુ. બાલુ મા જેવા માવતરોને મળુ ત્યારે દર વખતે આ વાત સમજાય... 

ખેર અમારો પ્રયત્ન આવા માવતરોને હૂંફ આપવાનો...

Mittal Patel meets Dhudi Ma in Harij

Dhudi Ma resides in Harij. But because she has a daughter, she does not fit into our category of needy elderly, but the daughter needs her support.

Dhudi Ma's daughter was happily married, but for some reason, at the age of 50, she lost her mental balance, and the in-laws decided to send her back to her mother.

Dhudi Ma tries hard to feed the two of them on the grains she receives through her ration card and elderly pension, but it is hard to provide two bellies on a few hundred rupees a month. They would wait for someone to come and give them some food.

VSSM began providing a ration kit to Dhudi Ma. "May God shower you with abundance," an elated Dhudi Ma had told me when I met her recently.

I have always mentioned, "we don't  provide anything; our role is of a facilitator here." I have always said. And we pray for a better life in the next birth for 225 elders like Dhudi Ma whom we support through our Mavjat initiative. It is a painful existence for them. 

Some elders cannot even speak well; VSSM tries to ensure their neighbours cook and feed them.Dhudi Ma resides in Harij.

ઘુડી મા.. હારીજમાં રહે.

નિરાધાર તો ન કહી શકાય. એક દીકરી છે એમને. પણ હા એ દીકરીને માના આધારની જરૃર.

દીકરીને પરણાવેલી. એનો સંસાર સુખી હતો પણ અચાનક એની માનસીક અવસ્થા બગડી તે પચાસ વર્ષે સાસરીયા એને પાછી ધુડી મા પાસે પાસે મુકી ગયા. 

રેશનકાર્ડ પર અનાજ ને વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન મળે તેમાંથી ધુડીમા પોતાનું ને દીકરીનું ભરણ પોષણ કરવા કોશીશ કરે. પણ પુરુ થાય?

આવામાં કોઈ આપી જાય એની વાટેય ઘણી વાર જુએ..

ખેર આવા એકલા અટૂલા માવતરોને જોઈને જીવ બળી જાય.. દર મહિને 1400નું રાશન અમે આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું તે ખુબ રાજી થયા. ભગવોન તમને ઘણું આપે એવું એમને મળી ત્યારે એમણે કહ્યું...

હું કહુ હું ક્યાં આપુ હું કે અમે તો નિમિત્ત માત્ર પણ હે ઈશ્વર ધુડીમા જેવા 225 માવતરોને અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપીયે તે અને તેમના જેવા અન્ય માવતરોને આવતો જનમ નોંધારો ન આપતો..

કેવું વલવલતું જીવન ક્યારેક કેટલાક માવતરો તો શું બોલે એય ન સમજાય. ત્યારે પડોશીને રાશન આપી એ એમને ખવડાવે તેવું ગોઠવીએ...

હા 225 માવતરોએ સંખ્યા અટકી નથી એ વધી રહી છે ને અમને જરૃર છે આવા માવતરોના પાલકની જે તેમનો માસીક ખર્ચ ઉપાડી લે. 

1400 રકમ કાંઈ એવડી મોટી નથી કે ન કરી શકાય. ને આ થઈ જાય તો એક રીતે એ નોંધારા નથી એવો અહેસાસ પણ એમને કરાવી શકાય..

Mittal Patel meets Muktaba and Jagdishkaka

This smile on our faces is fake; we pretend to look happy. The beggars can beg for food, and we cannot even do that. We have no choice but to endure the pain poverty brings along. If there is no food, we drink water and spend the night but cannot stretch our hands...”  Muktaba was in tears as she narrated their anginous living condition.

Muktaba and Jagdishkaka’s son used to fend for them, but last year the couple lost her only son to a freak accident. Somehow the marriage of their son did not last long, but the income he earned helped sustain Muktaba and Jagdishkaka. The family lived in a rented house, and life just rolled on until the tragedy struck. Their daughter is married into a joint family and her financial condition too is fragile, so she also could not help her parents financially.

With no choice left, Muktaba began working as domestic help in the neighbourhood. Even though it was difficult for her to work as domestic help because of her age and body condition, she continued working because the couple had no other choice. Kaka had suffered a stroke that had paralysed his half body, Muktaba also had the added responsibility of tending to his needs.

After the death of their son, the couple had no resources to pay the rent; hence they reached out to a builder and requested a place to stay against taking care of the premises. The builder sympathised and gave them refuge. This eased their living situation for a year. But as the apartments reached the completion stage, they were asked to move out.

The family had a house in Lodhika, but their nephew cheated with them and made Kaka stamp on the transfer document pretending it be a pension application. The couple has no money to fight a case or hire a lawyer.

When they learnt about a room for a cleaner at a building, they approached the residents and requested a place to stay. They were allowed to move into the room on the condition that Muktaba would sweep the premises for free. Which she does apart from cleaning dishes at a couple of houses. The remuneration from these odd jobs is meagre; hence, meeting the medical and food expenses is difficult.

When our Chayabahen and Kanubhai learnt about the condition of this couple, they immediately brought them under Mavjat’s care program, and a ration kit began reaching them every month.

I made it a point to go and see them recently. It was heart-wrenching to learn how greedy individuals take no mercy and lynch such destitute elderly.

VSSM provides ration kits to 225 such elderly in need of care and support. It helps bring food on their plate. You, too, can choose to support the elderly by donating Rs. 1400/- a month.

'લાફો મારી ગાલ રાતો રાખવો પડે એવી અમારી હાલત છે. માંગણિયાર લોકો તો ગામ પાહે માંગી હકે પણ અમે તો એમેય નથી કરી હકતા. ખાવા ના હોય તો પાણી પીને પડ્યા રેવાનું પણ કોઈ પાહે...'

આટલું બોલતા બોલતા મુક્તા બાની આંખોમાં ઝળઝળિયા આવી ગયા. 

તેમનો દિકરો એક વર્ષ પહેલાં જ ગુજરી ગયો. દિકરાના લગ્ન કરાવેલા પણ કોઈક કારણસર એનું છુટુ થઈ ગયું. દીકરો દસ હજાર કમાવી લાવતો જેમાંથી તે મુક્તા બા ને જગદીશ કાકાને ખવડાવતો. 

ભાડાના ઘરમાં એ રહેતા. હખેડખે જિંદગી નીકળતી. ત્યાં અચાનક દીકરો ગૂુજરી ગયો. માથે આભ ફાટ્યું. એમને દીકરી ખરી પણ એ સંયુક્ત કુટુંબમાં રહે વળી એનીયે સ્થિતિ નાજુક એટલે એ કાંઈ એવડી મોટી મદદ ન કરી શકે.

આખરે મુક્તા બાએ  લોકોના ઘરે કચરા પોતા, વાસણ માંજવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. પણ આ કામ એમનાથી થાય નહીં. મૂળ શરીર ભારે, ઘૂંટણમાં પણ તકલીફ એટલે ભોંય પર બેસી કામ કરવામાં તોબા થઈ જાય પણ એ બધુ અવગણીને એ કામ કરે. 

વળી પાછુ કાકાને અડધા શરીરે લકવા થઈ ગયો. તે એમનેય ઉપાડી ઉપાડીને ફેરવવા પડે. 

આવામાં દિકરો ગયા પછી ભાડું આપી શકાય તેવા પૈસા રહ્યા નહીં. આથી નવા બંધાઈ રહેલા ફ્લેટના માલીકને માલ- સામાનની મુક્તાબા પોતે ચોકી કરશેનું કહી આશરો આપવા કહ્યું. બીલ્ડ઼રે વગર પગારે રહેવા સહમતી આપી ને એમનું વરસ નીકળી ગયું. 

ફલેટ બંધાઈ જતા જગ્યા ખાલી કરવાનું કહેણ આવ્યું. હવે પ્રશ્ન હતો રહેવા ક્યાં જશું નો? લોધિકામાં એમનું ઘર હતું પણ દીકરો ગુજરી ગયા પછી ભત્રીજો આવીને પેન્શનના કાગળ તૈયાર કરુ છુ અહીંયા સહી કરો એમ કહીને મકાનના કાગળ પર કાકાનો અંગૂઠો કરાવી લીધો ને મકાન એમના નામે કરાવી લીધું. એટલે એ રસ્તો બંધ થયો. હા કેસ કરવાનું મુકતાબા એ કહ્યું. પણ એ માટે એમની પાસે પૈસા નહીં. 

આમ રહેવાનો મોટો પ્રશ્ન ઊભો થયો. ત્યાં અચનાક એક બીલ્ડીંગમાં રહીશોએ એક નાનકડી ઓરડી બિલ્ડીંગનું સફાઈ કામ તેમજ વોચમેનનું કામ કરનાર માટે બનાવી હોવાનો ખ્યાલ આવ્યો...

મુક્તા બા ત્યાં પહોંચ્યા ને પોતાને એ ઓરડીમાં રહેવા દેવા વિનંતી કરી. બિલ્ડ઼ીંગના રહેવાસીઓએ બિલ્ડીંગમાં કચરો વાળવાનું કામ વિનામુલ્યે કરશો તો રહેવા દઈશુંનું કહ્યું. બુઢા માવતરોને તો આસરો જોતો હતો. એમણે એ કાર્ય માથે લીધું.

મુક્તા બા સવારે બિલ્ડીંગમાં કચરો વાળે. ને પછી બે ત્રણ ઘરના વાસણ ઘસવા જાય ને હજાર પંદરસો કમાઈ લે. પણ એમાંથી દવાઓ સાથે ઘરનું પુરુ કરવું મુશ્કેલ. એમની આ વિપદા અમારા કાર્યકર છાયાબહેન અને કનુભાઈના ધ્યાને આવી. તેઓ બેય માવતરોને મળ્યા ને તુરત સ્થિતિ સમજી અમે રાશનકીટ આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. 

હું હમણાં ગઈ ત્યારે એમને મળવા ખાસ ગઈ એ વખતે એમણે આ બધુ કહ્યું. સાંભળીને હૃદયદ્રવી ઊઠે. કેવો ફરેબ એમના પોતાના લોકોએ એમની સાથે કર્યો. 

ખેર આવા 225 થી વધુ માવતરોને અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપીએ છીએ જેથી એ પેટ ભરીને ખાઈ શકે. 

તમે આવા માવતરનો માસીક ખર્ચ રૃા.1400 આપીને તેમના પાલક બની શકો.
