Ongoing Lake deepening work

Availability of water is a big issue there. If the lake of the village gets filled then farmers get water from the well. It will help them to use the water for farming & cattle care purposes.

The villagers have been requesting us since last two years to desilt the lake as it had become quite shallow. The lake's capacity to store water had reduced.

VSSM employed the dredging JCB machine and villagers helped in lifting the soil. The soil removed from the lake was used to repair the road alongside the lake. The good soil was used by the farmer for their farms. In the spirit of co-operation the work of desilting got underway.

Shri Chandravadan Shantilal Shah of Mumbai provided us the financial support for this work.

After desilting, the capacity of the lake to hold water increased The wells which used to get empty by February will have water for a longer time.

The water scarcity is a big issue in many parts of the world. In North Gujarat too water is scarce. In many villages, Narmada Dam has helped water becoming available. We wish that every village will have sufficient water but till that happens every lake, well, ponds, borewells will have to be kept in proper condition. We will also have to be very disciplined in our use of water. Every drop will have to be saved.

સાબરકાંઠાનું ગઢા ગામ.

પાણીની ત્યાં ઘણી વિપદા. ગામનું તળાવ ભરાય તો ખેડૂતોના કૂવામાં પાણી આવે. ખેડૂતો કૂવાના પાણીથી ખેતી અને પશુપાલન કરે. 

ગામનું મુખ્ય તળાવ ગાળવા ગામલોકો પાછલા બે વર્ષથી અમને વિનંતી કરે. મૂળ તો તળાવ છીછરુ થઈ ગયેલું એટલે પાણી ભરાવવાની ક્ષમતા ઓછી થઈ ગયેલી.

VSSM એ જેસીબી મશીન મુક્યુ ને ગામલોકોએ માટી ઉપાડવાનું કર્યું. તળાવમાંથી નીકળેલી માટીથી ગામલોકોએ સીમના રસ્તા રીપેર કર્યા. સારી માટી ખેડૂતોએ એમના ખેતરમાં નાખી. આમ સહભાગીતાથી તળાવનું કામ શરૃ કર્યું.

મુંબઈમાં રહેતા આદરણીય ચંદ્રવદનભાઈ શાંતિલાલ શાહે અમને આ તળાવ ગાળવા આર્થિક ટેકો કર્યો જેના લીધે તળાવ ઊંડુ કરી શકાયું.

તળાવ ઊંડુ થતા પાણી ધારણ કરવાની ક્ષમતા વધી. ગામલોકોના કૂવા જે ફેબ્રુઆરીમાં ખાલી થઈ જતા તે લાંબો સમય સુધી ભરાયેલા રહેશે..

પાણીની મુશ્કેલી દેશ દુનિયાના ઘણા વિસ્તારોમાં પડી રહી છે. ઉત્તર ગુજરાતમાં પણ કિલ્લત છે. ઘણા ગામોમાં સરકારે નર્મદા, ધરોઈ ડેમના પહોંચાડ્યા છે. આશા રાખીએ દરેક ગામમાં પાણી પહોંચે પણ ન પહોંચે ત્યાં સુધી હાથવગા આપણા વાસણો એવા તળાવ, કૂવા, વાવ, રીચાર્જ બોરવેલ ટૂંકમાં પાણી બચાવવા જે પદ્ધતિ અપનાવવી પડે તે અપનાવી પાણીના ટીપે ટીપાને બચાવીએ...

"Plant trees in our village. We will nurture & take proper care".

"First,arrange for the water supply where you want to plant the trees. Then we will talk about tree plantation."

This was the talk with the villagers of Kanai in Sabarkantha District almost 3 years back. The year in which we talked about their arranging for water supply, they dug a borewell but unfortunately it did not yield any water.

In Kanoi village, the black stone is found upto 100-125 feet depth. Thus most borewell projects are not successful in Kanoi.

Every farmer has his Well and in that he manages to farm and take care of his animals,

In order that water remains in the Well, the farmer himself digs the Well deeper. Seeing their enthusiasm, since the last 3 years even we at VSSM have been helping them.

Two lakes in the village have been de-silted with the help of the local villagers.

The villagers contribute a lot in desilting the lakes.  Seeing the love for lakes , we call the village a "Lake Hungry Village".

Since the lakes are quite deep, the surrounding areas of the lake also started getting water. The villagers then decided to dig a borewell in the area where they wanted to plant the trees. But unfortunately the borewell did not yield any water.  They did not lose hope. They initiated digging borewells at 4 places. At last they were successful. and from the fourth borewell they could get water. All the expenses for all 4 borewells was done by Kanai Villagers.

After that , with the help of Dr K R Shroff Foundation we planted more than 6500 trees. That too with the determination to nurture them till they grow big. Most of the trees that were planted were fruit bearing trees. Their intention was that they should earn some income by selling the fruits so that they can improve the grasslands & plant some trees there. They would not need any financial help from any other organisation or from the government.

Kanai is an extremely enlightened village. They will be able to put to use the income from fruits to a good use.

Respected Partulbhai Shroff who helped in tree plantation in Kanai visited the village. Dr K R Shroff Foundation has helped VSSM in planting around 1.70 lakh trees in last 2 years. We are extremely thankful to them for this.

VSSM has since the year 2019 been instrumental in planting 8.80 lakhs trees. 

We wish good for all.  

'અમારા ગામમાં તમે વૃક્ષો વાવો અમે બરાબર ધ્યાન રાખીને એને ઉછેરીશું.'

'જ્યાં વૃક્ષો વાવવાની ઈચ્છા છે ત્યાં પ્રથમ પાણીની વ્યવસ્થા કરો પછી આગળ વાત કરીશું..'

સાબરકાંઠાના કનઈગામના લોકો સાથે ત્રણ વર્ષ પહેલાં આ વાત થયેલી. જે વર્ષે આ વાત થઈ એ વર્ષે એમણે વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા જે જગ્યા પસંદ કરી ત્યાં બોરવેલ કર્યો. પણ એમને પાણી ન મળ્યું. કનઈની જમીનમાં કાળો પથ્થર લગભગ 100 -125 ફૂટે લાગી જાય. આમ ત્યાં પાણી મેળવવા કરેલા મોટાભાગના બોરવેલ સફળ ન પણ થાય. 

દરેક ખેડૂત કુવા કરે અને કુવાથી તેમની ખેતી અને પશુપાલન થાય.

કુવામાં પાણી ભરાઈ રહે એ માટે તેઓ ગામના તળાવને ઊંડા કરવા જાતે મથે. છેલ્લા ત્રણેક વર્ષથી અમે પણ એમની ધગશ જોઈને મદદ કરીએ.

ગામના બે તળાવો પ્રમાણમાં સારા એવા ઊંડા VSSM સાથે સંક્ળાયેલા સ્વજનોની મદદથી અમે કર્યા.

ગામલોકોની પણ એમાં ઘણી મોટી ભાગીદારી. તળાવ માટે તેમની લાગણી જોઈને આ ગામને અમે તળાવ ભૂખ્યું ગામ પણ કહીએ. 

તળાવો થયા એ પણ સારા એવા ઊંડા જેના લીધે આજુબાજુની જમીનમાં પાણીના ઝરા ફુટ્યા. ગામલોકોએ ફરી જ્યાં વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવાની ઈચ્છા રાખી ત્યાં બોરવેલ કર્યો. પણ પાણી ન મળ્યું. પણ એમણે હિંમત ન હારી. ચાર જગ્યાએ બોરવેલ માટે હોલ પાડ્યા. આખરે કુદરતે તેમની મનછાની કદર કરી અને ચોથા બોરવેલમાંથી પાણી મળ્યું. આ બધો ખર્ચ ગામલોકોએ પોતે કર્યો. 

એ પછી અમે ડો કે.આર.શ્રોફ ફાઉન્ડેશની મદદથી ત્યાં 6500 થી વધારે વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા એ પણ ઉછેરવાના સંકલ્પ સાથે.. મોટાભાગના વૃક્ષો તેમણે ફળાઉ વાવ્યા. એમનો આશય આ ફળાઉ વૃક્ષોમાંથી ભવિષ્યમાં આવક થાય તો એ આવકમાંથી ગામની અન્ય ગૌચર જગ્યાઓને સુધારી શકાય. એમાં વૃક્ષો વાવી શકાય.  જેથી કોઈ સંસ્થા કે સરકારની મદદની એમને જરૃર ન પડે. 

કનઈ જાગૃત ગામ છે. એટલે વૃક્ષોની આવકનો આવો સારો ઉપયોગ થશે એ પણ નક્કી છે. 

આદરણીય પ્રતુલભાઈ શ્રોફ કે જેમણે કનઈમાં વૃક્ષો  વામાં મદદ કરી તેમણે ગામની ખાસ મુલાકાત લીધી. KRSF સંસ્થાએ VSSMને છેલ્લા બે વર્ષમાં 1.70 લાખ વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવામાં અમને મદદ કરી. તેમની આ લાગણી માટે આભારી છીએ. 

જ્યારે VSSM 2019 થી અત્યાર સુધીમાં સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્વજનોની મદદથી 8.80 લાખ વૃક્ષો ઉછેરમાં નિમિત્ત બન્યું છે.. 

સૌનું શુભ થાવ તેવી શુભભાવના...

To understand how precious water is, ask people with the least access to it.

Kutch’s Rapar is a water-starved region. The scarcity was not for drinking water alone; even water for domestic use was a scarce commodity. So people would not bathe for days. And when they decided to clean, they would sit over a charpoy with a large container underneath it to collect the bathing water and reuse it for watering the trees and rinsing the cooking vessels.

However, the drinking water issues have been largely resolved with the Narmada waters reaching remote Kutch. Nonetheless, water for agriculture remains a concern.

Since 2015, VSSM has worked to deepen the community lakes in North Gujarat. Until now, it had been Banaskantha; beginning this year, we have also extended the efforts to Patan, Mehsana, and Sabarkantha districts.

We began lake deepening work in Banaskantha’s Mudetha with the support of Mahendra Brothers and the local community. The villagers think that the depth of the lake should be increased. If the government wishes to become a partner, we would collectively achieve a very positive outcome. 

We are happy that more and more communities are becoming increasingly aware of water issues. We hope our collective efforts work wonders in raising the groundwater tables and filling our water reservoirs.

જ્યાં નથી ત્યાં પુછો પાણીની શું કિંમત છે...

વાત નાનકડી પણ અગત્યની. પાણીની મુશ્કેલીની એક વાત કોઈએ કરેલી.

કચ્છનો રાપર વિસ્તાર. પહેલાં પાણીને લઈને ઘણી તકલીફ વેઠતો. પીવાના પાણીની પણ મુશ્કેલી. લોકો નિયમીત નાહવા ધોવાનું ન કરે. અને જ્યારે નાહવાનું કરે ત્યારે ખાટલામાં બેસી સ્નાન કરે અને ખાટલા નીચે મોટુ વાસણ રાખે જેથી નાહ્યાનું પાણી એ વાસણમાં ભરાય જેને ઘર આગળ કરેલા વૃક્ષો કે વાસણ ધોવા માટે વપરાતા બે પાણીમાંથી એક પાણી માટે વાપરી શકાય.

પાણીની આ મુશ્કેલીમાંથી આજે મા રેવા(નર્મદા) આવવાના લીધે ઘણી રાહત થઈ છે. છતાં સંપૂર્ણ રાહત થઈ છે તેવું ન કહી શકાય. કદાચ પીવાનું પાણી આપણને સમયસર મળે પણ ખેતીલાયક પાણીની સ્થિતિ અંગે વિચારવા જેવું.

અમે ઉત્તર ગુજરાતમાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાના કાર્યો કરીએ. બનાસકાંઠામાં 2015થી ગામની ભાગીદારીથી તળાવો કરીએ. આ વર્ષે આ અભિયાન ફક્ત બનાસકાંઠા પુરતુ સમિતિ ન રાખતા પાટણ, મહેસાણા અને સાબરકાંઠામાં પણ જલમંદિરો બાંધી આગળ વધાર્યું. 

બનાસકાંઠાનું મુડેઠા. ત્યાં અમે મહેન્દ્રબ્રધર્સ અને ગ્રામજનોની ભાગીદારીથી તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. ગામના ખેડૂતોની લાગણી તળાવનું કામ વધારે ઊંડુ થાય એવી હતી. જો સરકાર આ કાર્યમાં ભાગીદારી કરે તો સંસ્થા, સરકાર, ગ્રામજનોની ભાગીદારીથી સરસ કામ થઈ શકે. 

પણ આનંદ હવે ગામો પાણી માટે જાગૃત થયા એનો છે.. બસ પાણીને લઈને ખુબ કામ થાય તેમ ઈચ્છીએ જેથી આપણી પાણી બેંક વર્ષો પહેલાં ભરાયેલી હતી તેવી રહે...

 Shri Arjunbhai Joshi, Sarpanch of Banaskantha’s Khorda village in Tharad block delivered what he had promised.

 The excavated soil from most of the lakes in Banaskantha is unusable. The locals call it Refdo, this soil cannot be used in farms. Hence, VSSM has this pre-condition that requires the villagers to ferry out the excavated soil and also make a small contribution to the maintenance of the lake. We were worried about how all of these would be achieved in Khorda however, Sarpanch Shri Arjunbhai ensured we need to worry under his rein. Being a leader he is, it was obvious the villagers would support. 

Each house sent its contribution, tractors lined up and JCB was provided by us. And the work began.

Under Government’s Sujalam Sufalam Scheme a work order of Rs. 3.90 lacs had been issued of which 60% is aided by the government bringing the amount to 2.34 lacs for this lake. This amount does not include cleaning and other expenses hence the amount is deficient to an extent. Apart from government’s assistance VSSM poured in Rs. 2.34 lacs (the work is still underway) we expect just the excavation expenditure to cross Rs. 5 lacs.

Hence, it is crucial everyone pitches in and makes these kinds of work a collective effort. The villagers, government and VSSM together are responsible for giving the community lake of Khorda a new life. It is all thanks to Sarpanch Arjunbhai’s vision. This community has acted before it is too late, have you?

બનાસકાંઠાના ઘણા વિસ્તારમાં તળાવમાંથી ફળદ્રપ માટી નીકળે નહીં. સ્થાનીકભાષામાં જેને રેફડો કહેવાય એ નીકળે જેનો ઉપયોગ ખેતરમાં ન થાય.

અમે તળાવ ગાળીએ એમાં પહેલી શરત માટી ગામે ઉપાડવાની અને શક્ય હોય તો નાનો ફાળો પણ ભેગો કરવાનો. ખોરડામાં આ બધુ કેમ થશે એવી ચિંતા હતી પણ અર્જુનભાઈ જેવા ઉત્સાહી સરપંચ જ્યાં હોય ત્યાં ગામ સાથે કેમ ના આવે?

ગામે માટી ઉપાડવા માટે માતબર ફાળો ઘર દીઠ ભેગો કર્યો અને ભાડેથી ટ્રેક્ટર મુક્યા અને જેસીબી અમે મુક્યું.

સરકારે પણ સુજલામ સુફલામ યોજના અંતર્ગત આ તળાવને ઊંડું કરવા 3.90 હજારનો વર્ક ઓર્ડર આપ્યો જેમાંની 60 ટકા રકમ સરકાર આપે. જે મુજબ 2.34 લાખની મદદ મળે. આ રકમમાં તળાવની સફાઈ અને અન્ય નથી આવતું આથી રકમ ઓછી પણ મળે. સરકારના ફાળા ઉપરાંત VSSM દ્વારા 2.75 અથવા જરૃરિયાત મુજબની રકમ જોડવામાં આવી. (જો કે

હજુ કામ ચાલુ છે. લગભગ પાંચ લાખ ઉપરાંત ફક્ત ખોદાઈ પાછળ ખર્ચ થશે)

ટૂંકમાં ગામ, સરકાર અને સંસ્થાની મદદથી સુંદર મજાનું કામ ખોરડાગામના તળાવમાં થયું.

It’s time we give back all that we have lynched from nature….

Imagine life without air and water!!! We inherited an earth full of dense forest, thriving flora, fauna and abundant of water all around. Civilizations birthed and shaped around water.

Water is the most precious element on earth. And conserving water was of primary importance in the past. In water scarce areas making special provisions for water,  like step wells, well, lakes was considered to be a noble work. Communities and village elders took care of common  water sources. They followed an annual calendar of cleaning and desilting  village wells and lakes. Even today,  providing water to the thirsty is considered to be the most righteous work. And this is true to the core. A task like deepening and desilting lake benefits not just the humans but the birds and animals, trees and earth…

VSSM has taken up the task of desilting the lakes of Banaskantha, a water starved district of Gujarat. It carries this task with support from its well-wishing friends,  by partnering with the village leadership. The village communities are explained the reason of falling water levels and how they can contribute to VSSM’s efforts. Whereever the communities have comprehended our efforts the entire task is accomplished with ease and work brings desired results.

Recently,  we were in Kankrej block’s Padardi village. The village has agreed to lift the excavated mud but we would be happier if they agreed to raise money and  contribute to this effort just like Mudetha, Khadol and many other villages did.

We have to think collectively on giving back all that we have extorted from soil , we are grateful to all of you who have joined hands in this task of immense public service.

Naranbhai has been careful in selecting villages that are prepared to cooperate and contribute. The will to join hands in meaningful and constructive activities eases lots of challenges that usually  emerge once the work starts. Thank you Naranbhai for the thought you put in each task.

તારુ દીધેલું વાલા તુજને ધરાવું....

પાણી અને શુદ્ધ હવા વગર જીવવું અશક્ય. પૃથ્વી બની ત્યારે જંગલ આચ્છાદીત હતી. 

પાણીના સ્ત્રોતો પણ જ્યાં હતા ત્યાં ભરપુર હતા. પણ જ્યાં પાણી બારેમાસ મળવાનું સંભવ નહોતું ત્યા માણસે પાણી સંગ્રહ માટે શું થઈ શકે તે વિચારી વાવ, કુવા, તળાવો ગાળવાનું કર્યું.

અને વખતો વખત તળાવો ગળાતા રહ્યા. ને એનો ફાયદો સૌ મેળવતા રહ્યા. 

આજેય તળાવ ગળાવવા એ કોઈ યજ્ઞથી કમ નથી એવું ગામલોકો કહે છે.

પાપ પુણ્યનો હિસાબ માંડીએ તો લોકો કહે, તળાવ ગળાવવામાં મદદરૃપ થવું એનાથી મોટુ કોઈ પુણ્ય નથી... આ વાત સો ટકા સાચી. તળાવથી માનવ વસતિને તો ફાયદો થાય સાથે સાથે પશુપંખી, ઝાડ પાન બધાયને ફાયદો...

આ ફાયદાની વાતો કરીને તળાવો ઊંડા કરવા ને સાથે ગામ પણ પોતોનું યથા યોગ્ય દાન આપે એ માટે આપણે ગામને સમજાવીએ છીએ.

જે સમજે ત્યાં રૃડુ કામ થઈ રહ્યું છે.

તાજેતરમાં બનાસકાંઠાના કાંકરેજ તાલુકાના પાદરડીગામમાં તળાવ ગાળવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.

માટી ઉપાડવાનું ગામે પોતાના માથે લીધુ. આ વાતથી તો રાજી. પણ ગામ પોતે પણ તળાવ ગાળવા મૂડેઠા, ખડોલ ગામની જેમ ફાળો ભેગો કરે તો વધુ રાજી થઈશું.

તારુ દીધેલું વાલા તુજને ધરાવું એ વાત સાર્થક કરવાનો સમય હવે આવી ગ્યો છે.

ધરતીના પેટાળની ચિંતા ખેડુત નહીં કરે તો કોણ કરશે....

With the desilting  and  deepening of 45 lakes in Banaskantha, we were eagerly awaiting the arrival of rains that would fill up these thirsty and parched lakes. However, the rain gods decided otherwise. The entire region received almost no rain. Narmada that has turned out to be lifeline of Gujarat is also drying up soon.

The forecast is that Gujarat is heading towards potable water crisis this year. Chances are that even drinking water will be hard to access this summer.

However, Banaskantha’s Vadia decided to try its level best to save as much water possible. It decided to put into practice the theory of restricting the village water within village boundaries. It went a bit further and captured the rain water falling on the farmlands by designing and implementing compartment bunding on the farms of 40 farmer members of Saraniya Women Cooperative Society.

Large pit have been created to ensure that the rain water through the farms flows in these pits and begins percolating underground (can be seen in the picture).

Vadia, a village believed to be ignorant and illiterate managed to work wonderfully to preserve water. We hope other villages try to emulate these efforts.

ગુજરાતથી વરસાદ રીસાયો.

બનાસકાંઠામાં અમે 45 તળાવો ખોદાયા.

ગામના તમામ અમી દૃષ્ટિએ વરસાદની રાહ જોતા રહ્યા પણ વરસાદ તો સાચે રીસાયો..

આખો પંથ કોરો ભઠ્ઠ રહ્યો. નર્મદા જીવાદોરી. પણ એના નીરેય આવતા ઉનાળા સુધી ખુટવાના..

પીવાનું પાણી મળી રહે તોય ઘણું એવો ઘાટ ઘડાયો..

વરસાદ રીસાયો પણ આપણાથી થોડી એની કટ્ટી કરાય.

એના આવવાની રાહમાં તો લાલ જાજમ પાથરવાની..

બનાસકાંઠાના વાડિયાએ આવી જ લાલજાજમ પાથરી.. 

ગામમાં એકેય તળાવ નહીં. પણ વરસાદી પાણીને તો બચાવવું રહ્યું. શું કરવું?

આખરે ગામનું પાણી ગામમાં ને સીમનું સીમમાં એ થીયરીથી થોડા આગળ ચાલી ખેતરનું પાણી ખેતરમાં એ વાત ઉપર અમે આવ્યા.

સ્ત્રી સરાણિયા સહકારી મંડળીના ચાલીસ ખેડુત ખાતેદારોના ખેતરોમાં VSSM એ કંપાર્ટમેન્ટ બંડીંગ કર્યું. ખેતરમાં પાણીનો ઢાળ જે બાજુ હોય તે બાજુ શેઢાની અંદરની બાજુ સળંગ મોટા ખાડા કર્યા જેથી ખેતરમાંથી વરસાદી પાણી વહીને આ ખાડામાં જ આવે ને ત્યાંથી જમીનમાં ઉતરે. (ફોટોમાં કંપાર્ટમેન્ટ બંડીંગ જોઈ શકાય છે)

વાડિયા જેવું સૌની નજરે નાસમજ ગામ પાણીનું મહત્વ સમજે એનાથી રૃડુ શું.

વાડિયાગામની પાણી બચાવવાની આ સમજમનું અનુકરણ ગુજરાતનો દરેક ખેડુત કરે એવી આશા રાખીએ...

સાથે ભઈ’સાબ આવતે ચોમાસે ના રીસાતો હો... એવા કાલાવાલાય વરસાદને અત્યારથી...

 There is a very famous dialogue of Shahrukh Khan, “if you love anything whole heartedly, the world helps you to get you that thing.” 

The same thing as written in the Novel Alchemist, “if we keep on remembering the thing decided once, mother Nature fulfils that wish certainly!” (I am talking about positive things here, not negative! I clarified it not to divert your mind for the negative things)

Lake Deepening work and other villagers 

The Okhabapa from Bhesana once wished for the water bodies (lakes) which keeps mother earth alive, to get more deepen. He passed through three stages of his life and during the time, with other wishes, God also heard the wish of deepening the lakes. 

“During my life, I wished to get my village ponds to get deepen but never such circumstances took place where I could fulfil this wish. I wanted to do it during my tenure as Sarpanch but I could not do it.  I daily pray to God that before I leave this world, this wish may be fulfilled. So that God heard my prayer. Otherwise who would come to Bhesana to deepen the lakes!”

Okhabapa wished it with the pure heart and see, the Premjibhai of this village is the government officer whom our Karyakar Naran happened to meet and everything was settled down.

I pray that everyone of us understand the value of saving water at the earliest. I express gratitude to all the villagers and the well-wishers who helped to do this work.

શાહરુખ ખાનનો બહુ પ્રચલિત ડાયલોગ, 

'અગર કીસી ચીજ કો દીલ સે ચાહો તો પુરી કાયનાત ઉસે તુમસે મીલાને કી કોશીશ મે લગ જાતી હૈ'

આ ડોયલોગ ને અલકેમીસ્ટમાં લખ્યા પ્રમાણે મનમાં નક્કી કરેલી વાતનું વારંવાર રટણ કર્યા કરીએ તો કુદરત એ ઈચ્છા જરૃર પૂર્ણ કરે છે.(હકારાત્મક વાત હો. નકારની વાત હું નથી કરતી. રખેને એ બાજુ મનવાળતા એટલે ખાસ ચોખવટ કરી)

ભેંસાણાના ઓખાબાપાએ ધરતીને જીવતી રાખનાર પાણી સંગ્રાલયો (તળાવો) ઊંડા થાય એની ખેવના કરી. જીવનના ત્રણ પડાવ પૂર્ણ કર્યા આ બધા વખતમાં બીજા મનોરથની સાથે તળાવ ઊંડા કરવાની જીજીવિષા સતત રાખી ને ઈશ્વરે એ પ્રાર્થના સાંભળી.

'મારા જીવતા મારા ગોમના તળાવો ઊંડા થાય એવી ભાવના હતી પણ એવા સંજોગ જ ના થ્યા. સરપંચ થ્યો તાણ કરવું તુ પણ ના કરી હક્યો. પણ મરતા પેલા તળાવ થઈ જાય તો હારુ એવી ભગવોનનો રોજ પ્રાર્થના કરતો તે ભગવોને મારી વિનતી હોભળી. નકર ભેંસોણામોં કુણ તળાવ ગોદવ.'

ઓખા બાપાએ સાચા મનથી તમન્ના રાખીએ ને જુઓ ગામના પ્રેમજીભાઈ જેઓ સરકારી કર્મચારી છે તેમને કાર્યકર નારણને મળવાનું થયું ને બધુ ગોઠવાઈ ગયું.

જેસીબી મશીન તળાવ ઊંડા કરવા લાગ્યા એ જોઈને ભીખાબાપા જેવા ગામના તમામ રાજી થઈ ગ્યા. 

ગામેય સરસ. જેસીબીનો ખર્ચ VSSMનો અને માટી ઉપાડવાનો ખર્ચ ગામનો...

પાણી બચાવનું મુલ્ય આપણે સૌ ઝડપથી સમજીએ એવી પ્રાર્થના ને આ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરનાર સ્નેહીજનો અને ગ્રામજનોનો આભાર..

ભેંસાણા ગઈ ત્યારે ઓખાબાપાએ વાત કરેલી એ ફોટો ઓખાબાપાની ઓળખાણ માટે. બાકી ગામમાં ખોદાઈ રહેલા તળાવો ને ગ્રામજનો જોઈ શકાય.

“Ben, the floods of 2017 brought lot of destruction in our village. Mostly all houses were chocked with mud and sludge. The families suffered immense loss but, not a single family took the cash-doles from Government. It was a collective decision to refuse it all. There are many poor families in the village who needed it more than we did, they had no food or shelter and hence the well-off families in the village decided to take care of their food and meals. We gave them grains and everything they required to prepare food!” Are you surprised? Well, for a moment I too was taken aback and forgot that we are living in the most difficult times and to witness such outpour of empathy was simply amazing!!

The villagers of Tharad’s Pathamda village are amazing and deserves all our respect and salutations. They are driven by the fundamental human values and belief systems. Helping those in need and living in more difficulties is their belief. The loss they suffered during the floods was immense, they had all the right to take the cash-doles the government was giving away. But, they chose to let go of it and support the ones who needed it more!! Imagine your house submerged in muddy sludge and you decide to help others who are in more need than you are!! Would you be able to let go??

Our salaam and respects to such fantastic human beings of Pathamda village.

‘બેન 2017મોં પુર આયું ક નઈ? ગોમમોં અન લોકોના ઘરોમોં ઘણા પોણી ભરઈ જ્યાંતા. ખુબ નુકશોન થયું. પણ અમાર ગોમના એકેય લોકોએ સરકારની કેશડોલ ના લીધી. અમે બધાએ ભેગા મળીન ના પાડી દીધી, ન જોકણ વધુ જરૃર હોય તો કણ મદદ આલવા કીધુ. ગોમમોં ઘણા ગરીબ ઘરો હ્ ઈમન ખાવા પીવાની કોય તકલીફ ના પડ ઈનું ધોન ગોમના સુખી પરિવારોએ રાખ્યું. અનાજ ન બીજુ જે જોતુ કરતું તું એ બધુંય અમે આલ્યું.’ પઠામડાગામના શીવરામભાઈએ આ વાત જણાવી ત્યારે ઘડીક ભૂલાઈ જ ગયું કે આ હળાહળ કળીયુગ છે...

થરાદ તાલુકાનું પઠામડા અદભૂત ગામ ને ગામના અદભૂત લોકો... સલામ કરવાનું મન થાય એવી વિચારધાર... બહુ ભણેલા નહીં છતાં મફતનું નહીં લેવાની ને ગામનો દરેક વંચિત ગરીબ મારો જ પ્રિયજન એવી સુંદર ભાવના...

નુકશાન ઘણું હતું. સરકાર પૈસા આપતી હતી ને હકથી લેવાય એમ હતુંયે ખરુ. છતાંય મારા કરતાં વધુ ગરીબ અને તકલીફમાં ઘણા છે તેમને મદદ કરો અમને જરૃર નથી... આ કહેવું કાંઈ નાની સુની વાત નથી... અને એ વાતેય પાછી આખુ ઘર કાદવમાં ગરકાવ થઈ ગયું હોયને ઘરવખરી તણાઈ ગઈ હોય એ વખતે કરવી.... (વિચારી જુઓ)

આવા અદભૂત માસણોને નતમસ્તક પ્રણામ જ કરવા ઘટે...

Almost a year back VSSM took the idea of water conservation through rain water harvesting and lake revival to the village communities of Banaskantha, the concept was foreign to them and hence received a very lukewarm response. We began with one village but, as time progressed and more communities got to understand about the benefits of recharging the ground water VSSM started receiving requests for lake revival from Nanol, Paradar, Karnasar etc. This season we have depended 2 lakes in Nanol village. The communities have come forward, are contributing according to their ability and working towards preserving their water resources…. With more and more villages joining in  we could sense that communities have resolved to work towards such efforts. And we couldn’t be happier!!

The concept and efforts have been conceived by our respected Shri. Rashminbhai Sanghavi, who was amidst the communities recently to monitor and guide the ongoing efforts. He interacted with the community members to resolve the concerns and doubts they posed.

Vssm દ્વારા બનાસકાંઠામાં વોટર મેનેજમેન્ટના કામો શરૃ થયા

Vssmએ થરાદના ગામોમાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરાવવાનું કામ શરૃ કર્યું છે. જે અંતર્ગત આ સિઝનમાં નાનોલમાં બે તળાવ ખોદાયા. આ કામને શરૂઆતમાં જોઈએ તેવો પ્રતિસાદ નહોતો મળતો પણ હવે તો નાનોલ, પડાદર, કરણાસર, આસોદર વગેરે ગામના લોકો પણ પોતાના તળાવો ઊંડા કરાવવા વિનંતી કરી રહ્યા છે. 

પરંપરાગત જળસ્ત્રોત સચવાય તે માટેની ઝૂંબેશમાં વધારે લોકો જોડાઈ રહ્યા છે અને પોતાની રીતે ફાળો પણ આપી રહ્યા છે તેનો આનંદ છે.

તળાવોના કામને જોવા માટે અને માર્ગદર્શન  આપવા મુંબઈથી આવેલા આદરણીય શ્રી રશ્મિનભાઈ સંઘવીએ ગામલોકો સાથે તળાવો ઊંડા કરવા સંદર્ભે વધારે વિગતે વાતો કરી જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે. આ કામો માટે મદદરૂપ થનાર દાતાઓનો આ તબક્કે આભાર વ્યક્ત કરીએ છીએ.

Respect for the elements that nurture life was at the core to the ancient wisdom. Our forefathers were conscious of the fact that humans and nature share a very symbiotic relationship, an obvious fact that most generations before us were much aware about. Hence most of our traditions, rituals and festivals were observed and celebrated to pay regards to this fragile yet life giving elements. However, our mad rush for development, questioning indigenous knowledge and negating traditional wisdom and belief systems have played havoc on the environment.  We have stopped worrying about the wellbeing of our precious natural resources. The collective greed has made us exploit the natural resources to unprecedented levels, we have just bothered to take from mother earth without caring to return it back! And we all are witness to the consequences this greed has brought us!!

Water – the life giving and the most precious of the elements. Life on earth is unimaginable without water and yet we have taken it so much for granted. Our ancestors had respected the value of water and hence developed all possible systems to harvest and preserve water. It was always used judiciously. The lakes, wells, step-wells, underground water tanks of the past centuries are a result of the methods adopted by them. But with passing times the traditional practices of collecting and protecting water were termed as outdated and irrational. The collective tasks taken up at the community levels for water harvesting have also become obsolete. Water that was earlier required to be fetched from village lakes or wells began reaching villages and homes through pipelines and taps. Hence, the need to maintain and restore the local water bodies was no longer felt by the community. The lakes and wells were always the chief source of drinking water and were regularly cleaned. No garbage or filth could accumulate near the lakes. The ill-kept wells began drying up and the lakes were either encroached upon or filled with silt and garbage. Since no one required their services these common properties have died a slow death!! Our farsighted fore-fathers understood the value of natural resources and respected its sources. Apart from a single large lake in the village they had also planned several other smaller lakes around the village periphery. But these lakes too have been leveled up and encroached upon!!

 

The trend of taking multiple crops through the year as against the rain-fed crops in the past,  has depleted the ground water levels to alarming levels. Uncontrolled, unmonitored drilling and installation of bore wells has almost finished off the underground waters that had accumulated over the centuries. The symbiotic relationship we share with nature has been shattered. We just bothered to take and consume and forgot to give back even fraction of what we have taken. Our earth’s belly is getting empty, the consequences of which are expected to be grave.  

The communities failed to realize and act upon the looming disaster but the government managed to wake-up on time and initiated series of efforts for water harvesting. The idea behind such multi-million rupees efforts was to make provisions and retain the water in the village itself. The results of which remain favorable only in the villages where the leaders were progressive and united. Everywhere else it was just a waste of resources where the allocated budgets were completely spent without any work happening on the grounds. And since all of this does not directly affect us we are hardly bothered to care about the disaster in waiting.

VSSM works with the nomadic and de-notified communities and these extremely marginalized communities are feeling the burn of mistakes made in the past. Hence we decided to initiate our efforts towards water harvesting and conservation under the able guidance of our mentor Shri. Rashminbhai Sanghvi, who holds deep understanding and expertise on the matters of water conservation. Under his guidance we have begun deepening the lakes in Tharad’s dry and arid areas that remain devoid of irrigation facilities.

Currently we are excavating two lakes in Tharad’s Nanol village. The beginning was challenging. Villagers and communities who have been conditioned to believe that everything is government’s responsibility weren’t convinced towards contributing for a common good. Nonetheless, we did succeed in convincing them towards creating a common fund to facilitate such endeavors of community’s own benefit. The same fund has been used to deepen the lakes on Nalol.

One of the most important reasons for distress migration or the rural-urban migrations is lack of water and its consequences. Such efforts for harvesting rain water and conserving it for longer period have become the need of the day. As a society, we have remained way behind in addressing such crucial issues. VSSM will continue to strive towards making life better for the nomadic communities through such sustainable initiatives and as always we shall keep you posted on the developments in this areas……

vssm દ્વારા બનાસકાંઠામાં થઈ રહેલા જળસંચયના કામો

'જળ એ જીવન છે' એવું આપણે બોલીયે પણ જળસંચય માટે જે કામો પહેલા ગ્રામજનો દ્વારા સ્વયંમભૂ થતા હતા તે ધીમે ધીમે બંધ થઈ રહ્યા છે. મૂળ તો સમાજનો વિકાસ થતો ગયો તેમ તેમ માણસે પોતાની સુખ સગવડ માટે નવા નવા પ્રયોગો કર્યા અને તેમાંથી જે પ્રયોગ સફળ થતા ગયા તેનું અમલીકરણ કરી પોતાની જીંદગી વધારે સરળ બનાવી. એટલે જુની પદ્ધતિ છૂટતી ગઈ અને જે ખરેખર કાયમ કરવાનું હતું તે બંધ થઈ ગયું. જેમ કે, પહેલાં પીવાનું પાણી ગામોમાં બહારથી નહોતું આવતું. પાઈપલાઈની સગવડ નહોતી. ના નર્મદા જેવા મોટા ડેમ બંધાયા હતા. એ વખતે પીવાનું પાણી ગામના કુવામાંથી, જે તળાવની બાજુમાં હોય ત્યાંથી ભરવામાં આવતું એટલે ચોક્કસ સમયગાળે ગામના આ કુવાને સાફ કરવામાં આવતો આવું જ તળાવોનું પણ થતું પણ હવે ગામના તળાવો અને કુવા પર આધાર રાખવાનું ઓછું થતું ગયુ. પાઈપથી પીવાનું પાણી મળવા માંડ્યું. એટલે ગામકુવો અને ગામતળાવ પેલી એક તુટેલા ટેબલની આત્મકથા જેવા બની રહ્યા છે.

આજ રીતે પહેલાં ખેતી ફક્ત ચોમાસામાં થતી. કુવા ગાળીને પણ ખેતી થતી પણ બોરવેલનો જમાનો નહોતો. ટેકનોલોજીએ તેમાં પણ કમાલ કરી અને પેટાળમાં પડેલા સદીઓ જુના પાણીને ઉલેચી બહાર કાઢવાની વ્યવસ્થા કરી આપી. બસ પછી તો માણસે એ પેટાળના પાણીને ઉલેચીને ખેતી કરવા માંડી. કોઠીમાં ભરેલા ઘઉં કાઢ્યા જ કરીએ અને કોઢીમાં નવા ઘઉં ઉમેરીએ નહીં તો શું થાય? આ વાત સમજવાનું જ ભુલી ગયા..

જે વસ્તુ કામની નથી હોતી તેના તરફ કોઈનું ધ્યાન નથી જતું બસ આવું જ કાંઈક ગામના તળાવોનું થયું. આપણાં ઘૈડિયા ખુબ સમજદાર હતા અને પાણીના મુલ્યને એ બરાબર સમજતા હતા. માટે જ ગામતળાવની સાથે સાથે સીમતળાવોની સંખ્યા પણ ગામમાં સારી એવી રાખી હતી. પણ એ બધા તળાવો ધીમે ધીમે પુરાઈ રહ્યા છે ક્યાંક તો ખેડુતોએ વધારે મેળવવાની લાલસાએ તેના પર દબાણ કર્યું એટલે તળાવો ખાડા જેવા બની ગયા છે. ટૂંકમાં પરંપરાગત રીતે થતા જળ સંચયના કામો બંધ થવા માંડ્યા.

સરકાર તો લોકોના કલ્યાણ અર્થે કામ કરે, એને પાણીનું મહત્વ ખબર હતી. પેટાળના પાણી સતત ઉલેચાશે તો એક દિવસ જમીન પોલી થઈ જશે ને એના પરિણામો ભયંકર આવશે.

ગામલોકો તો ના જાગ્યા પણ સરકારે વધારે સમજણ દાખવી ‘ગામનું પાણી ગામમાં રહેવું જોઈએ’ તેવા ઉમદા વિચાર સાથે તેમણે જળસંચયના કામો કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું અને તે માટે કરોડો રૃપિયાના બજેટ ફાળવાયા. પણ ગામ સારુ ત્યાં આ કામ સરખુ થયું બાકી માણસની લાલચ એવી વધી ગઈ છે કે આ બજેટ કામ કર્યા વગર જ વપરાઈ જવા માંડ્યા. દુરગામી પરિણામો આપણે વિચારવા ટેવાયેલા નથી એટલે આ બધુ સ્વાભાવિકપણે થઈ રહ્યું છે.

VSSM તો વિચરતી જાતિઓ સાથે કામ કરે પાણી સંદર્ભે અમે કામ કરેલું નહીં પણ એવા પ્રંસગ ઊભા થતા એ મુદ્દે કામ કરવાનું થયું અને આદરણીય રશ્મિનભાઈ સંધવીની આ મુદ્દે ઘણી ઊંડી સમજનો લાભ અમને મળ્યો. તેમની નિગરાનીમાં જ અમે બનાસકાંઠાના થરાદ તાલુકાના એવા ગામો કે જ્યાં નહેરની સગવડ નથી ત્યાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.

હાલમાં થરાદ તાલુકાનાં નાનોલ ગામના બે તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું કામ ચાલી રહ્યું છે. ગામના લોકો પણ આમાં આર્થિક સહયોગ કરે તેવું અમે નક્કી કર્યું. થોડું મુશ્કેલ હતું કેમ કે, આ કામ તો સરકાર કરે, પાણી જમીનમાં જશે અને ગામના તળ ઊંચા આવશે અમારા બોરવેલનેય ફાયદો થશે, વાત ખરી પણ આ ફાયદો મને એકલાને થોડો થવાનો આખા ગામને થવાનોને તો મારે શું કામ ફાળો આપવાનો? વળી આ તો સરકારે જ કરવાની તેમની ફરજ છે વગેરે જેવા પ્રશ્નો પણ થયા. પણ છેવટે અમે સમજાવી શક્યા એટલે ગામના લોકોએ પણ પોતાની રીતે ફાળો એકત્રિત કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું, જે ભંડોળને તેમના જ તળાવો ઊંડા કરવામાં ખર્ચ કરીશું.

ગામડાં ભાંગી રહ્યા છે. એને ભાંગતા અટકાવવા જળસંચયના કામો થવા ખુબ જરૃરી છે. (આ મુદ્દે થઈ રહેલા રસપ્રદ અનુભવો લખતા રહીશું.)
