The joy of bringing a smile to someone’s face will always remain one of that matchless moments.

Ramila Ba lives in  Kheda’s Bamroli village in a small hut she calls home. Ramila Ba suffers from leprosy, so finding work is a challenge; her son is mentally unstable, so the responsibility of Ramila Ba still needs to worry about bringing food to the plate.

It has been many years since Ramila Ba’s husband passed away, yet she hasn’t received any benefit under the government’s widow pension scheme. Moreover, Ramila Ma has lost her fingers to leprosy, so getting the fingerprints scanned for biometric verification is impossible. As a result, her ration card has also fallen silent.

The pain and anguish individuals like Ramila Ma tackle on a daily basis can be comprehended only by meeting them, yet they have no complaints in life. So VSSM’s Rajnnibhai recommended Ramila Ma for a monthly ration kit so that she doesn’t have to live at the mercy of others.  

The Maavjat initiative has continued to receive your encouragement since its beginning. And the growing support helps us reach individuals like Ramila Ma. Along with the assurance of a meal, the ration kit has brought much-needed cheer into Ramila Ma’s life.

Ramila Ma came to meet me and express her gratitude when I was in Kheda recently. It gets me thinking if it is me they should be thanking!

The wise old Devu Ma once mentioned that the almighty sends the right person to the place they need at the right time. And I believe in her wise words.

VSSM will take the matter of activating the ration card and linking her to a widow pension with the respective authorities. The district collector of Kheda Shir Bachani saheb is compassionate towards the needs of these low-income families.

But for now, the ration kit has brought well-being to Ramila Ma; her toothless grin reveals the joy.

કોઈના મોંઢા પર સ્મીત લાવવામાં નિમિત્ત બનવું એનું સુખ કેટલું મોટુ?આ ફોટોમાં દેખાય એ રમીલાબા. ખેડાના વસૌના બામરોલીમાં કોઈની જગ્યામાં છાપરુ કરીને રહે. 

એમને રક્તપીતની બિમારી. એટલે ખાસ કોઈ કામે ન બોલાવે. દિકરો છે પણ એ માનસીક વિકલાંગ. આવામાં રમીલાબા હખેડખે પોતાનું ગાડુ ગબડાવે. 

એમના પતિ ગુજરે ગયે ઘણો સમય થયો પણ તેમને વિધવા સહાય મળતી નથી. મૂળ તેમનું આધારકાર્ડ નથી નીકળતું અમે એ નીકળે એ માટે કોશીશ કરીએ છીએ પણ તેમના આંગળા રક્તપીતની તકલીફના કારણે ખવાઈ ગયા છે. રાશનકાર્ડ અંગૂઠાની છાપ ન આવવાના કારણે સાયલન્ટ થઈ ગયું છે. સાયલન્ટ કેવો શબ્દ છે નહીં?

કેવી તકલીફમાં લોકો જીવે છે એ જ્યારે આવા સ્નેહીજનોને મળીએ ત્યારે સમજાય છતાંય તેમને ફરિયાદ નથી.. રમીલાબાની સ્થિતિ જોઈને અમારા કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈએ તેમને દર મહિને રાશનકીટ આપવા કહ્યું જેથી તેમને કોઈની ઓશિયાળી ન રહે. 

તમે સૌ આ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરો તે રમીલાબાને રાશન આપવાનું તો કરવું જ પડે ને? એ કર્યું પણ ખરુ... રમીલાબા આ વાતથીયે ઘણા રાજી.ખેડા ગઈ ત્યારે એ ખાસ મળવા આવ્યા. આભાર વ્યક્ત કર્યો. ક્યારેક થાય ખરેખર આ આભારની હું હકદાર ખરી? 

અમારા દેવુ માએ કહેલું એમ, જ્યારે જેની જરૃર પડે ત્યારે કુદરત એને એ જગ્યા પર મોકલી દે. બસ આ વાત મારા ખ્યાલથી સાચી..

રમીલાબાને ઝડપથી વિધવા સહાય ને એમનું રેશનકાર્ડ બોલતું એટલે કે અનાજ આપતુ થઈ જાય એવું એ માટે કલેક્ટર શ્રીને રજૂઆત કરીશું. કલેક્ટર શ્રી બાચાણી સાહેબ ખૂબ ભલા એ કાર્ય પાર પાડશે તેવી આશા છે. 

પણ રમીલાબાને આપણી રાશનકીટથીયે સાતા છે.. તેમના બોખલા મોંઢાનું સ્મીત એ દર્શાવે છે.  

આપ સૌનો આભાર તમે સૌ સાથે છો એટલે આવા 370 થી વધુ માવતરોને દર મહિને રાશન પહોંચાડી શકીયે છીએ એ માટે આપ સૌ પ્રત્યે કૃતજ્ઞતા...

Mittal Patel meets Balu Ma

Balu Ma stays in a tattered tin-roofed house perched between two pucca homes in Harij town of Patan district.

“Ben, we have to go meet Balu Ma.” Mohanbhai, my team-mate tells me. Balu Ma was walking around in her front yard we called her,  but she could not hear us. We walked up to her and asked her something that she would love. She was delighted to see us, she kissed my hands and just like a mother,  she showered me with great affection.

“If  I am in Harij,  how can I not come and meet you?” I chat with  her.

“Glad you did, Mohanbhai had mentioned about your visit to Harij, but he had told me that you would be at the city centre, so I walked with great difficulty to come see you, but couldn’t find you!!

“You did not have to come to see me, I was going to come to meet you.”

“You have eased my life, but I pray to God to call me to him. I am tired of living like this.”

Balu Ma’s eyes well up while saying this, and so did ours. I had met Balu Ma second time. Mohanbhai, Pareshbhai, I and others take care of Balu Ma and have become her family now, that is the reason she opens up with us to shares her joys and pain.

The more we work with the elderly the more we realise that it is challenging to spend old age without the care and support from loved ones. Elders like Balu Ma reaffirm that realisation. VSSM has decided to provide warmth and support to elders in need and will continue to do so…

બાલુ મા...

પાટણના હારીજમાં બે પાક્કા ઘરની વચ્ચે પતરાંવાળા કાચા ઘરમાં રહે. અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈએ કહ્યું, બેન આપણે એમને મળવા જવાનું છે. તે અમે એમના ઘરે પહોંચ્યા. ઘરની ઓશરીમાં એ આમ તેમ ઘીમે પગલે ફરતા હતા. અમે એમને બુમ પાડી પણ એમને કાને ઓછુ સંભળાય. છેવટે એમની ઓશરીમાં જઈને બાલુમા મજામાં એવું પુછ્યું. 

અમને જોઈને એ રાજી રાજી થઈ ગયા. મારો હાથ એમણે ચૂમ્યો. મારા ગાલ અને શરીર પર એમણે વહાલથી હાથ ફેરવ્યો. એમનું વહાલ મા એના બાળક માટે હેત વર્ષાવે એવું.

મે એમને કહ્યું, 

'હારીજ આવી હતી તે તમે આવ્યા તે મળવા આવી'

'બહુ હારુ કર્યું. મને મોહનભાઈએ કહ્યું તુ કે તમે આવશો. પણ એ તો કે'તાતા કે તમે બજાર આવશો તે હું તો ધેમ ધેમ છેક બજાર પોગી. થાકી ગઈ.. પણ તમે ના મલ્યા'

'હું અહીંયા આવવાની હતી. તમારે બજાર નહોતું આવવાનું...'

'તમે મને હખ કરી દીધું.. પણ હવે ભગવાન ઝટ લઈ જાય તો સારુ.. થાકી છું...'

બાલુ મા બોલતા હતા તે વેળા એમની આંખોના ખૂણા ભીના થઈ ગયા ને એમને જોઈને અમારા પણ.. એમને હું બીજીવાર મળી રહી હતી. પણ હવે હું, મોહનભાઈ, પરેશભાઈ વગેરે જે એમને સાચવે છે એમની સંભાળ લે છે એ એમનો પરિવાર બની ગયા છીએ. એટલે એ સુખ દુઃખની વાત અમને કહે છે..

ઘડપણ એ પણ કોઈ સ્નેહીજનના સાથ વગર કાઢવું ઘણું કપુરુ. બાલુ મા જેવા માવતરોને મળુ ત્યારે દર વખતે આ વાત સમજાય... 

ખેર અમારો પ્રયત્ન આવા માવતરોને હૂંફ આપવાનો...

 ‘Kaka, who looks after you? We ask because you do not have children?”

“This old woman begs and brings some food whenever she is in the village rest; I have government ration and pension to fall back on.”

“What when Soniba is unwell?”

“Nothing, we go hungry on such days!’

How can someone survive in such poor living conditions? The reply angsts me.  

Dhudakaka and Soni Ma reside in Kankrej’s Ratanpur. The couple does not have children, while Dhudakaka has been confined to bed for almost 30 years with a leg ailment. Soni Ma continues to take good care of Dhudakaka but now both, her eyesight and physical strength have weakened considerably. 

Their warm and loving relationship reminded me of Shri Suresh Dalal’s poem ‘ek dosi, dosa ne haji vahal kare che!’

“Whatever you can do!” Kaka responded to my question on how could we help them.

“We will send you a ration kit every month, manage medical and other expenses from your pension and let us know if you run short of money. 

Soni Ma responded in a meek ‘ok’, but her face revealed her happy heart. 

Currently, VSSM provides monthly ration to 195 destitute elderly through its Mavjat initiative. It is challenging to undertake such activity without the support of our well-wishers. 'કાકા સંતાનો નથી તો કોણ સાચવે?'

'આ ડોશી ગામમાં જાય ને માંગી લાવે બાકી સરકારી રાશન ને પેન્શન મળે એનો ટેકો રે'

'પણ સોનીમા બીમાર પડે ત્યારે'

'ત્યારે શું પડ્યા રહેવાનું!'

સાંભળીને કમાકમા આવી ગયા આવી સ્થિતિમાં કોઈને જીવવું પડે એ વાત વિચારવી જ અઘરી..

મૂળ કાંકરેજના #રતનપુરામાં ધુળાકાકા ને સોનીમા રહે. નિસંતાન દંપતી. ધુળાકાકાએ તો ત્રીસ વર્ષથી ખાટલો પકડ્યો છે.. પગમાં જબરી તકલીફ થઈ છે તે ઘુળીમાં જ એમને સાચવે. આંખે બરાબર ભળાતુ નથી, શરીર થાક્યુ છે છતાં એ કાકાને સરસ સાચવે..

બેઉને જોઈને સુરેશ દલાલ લીખીત કમાલ કરે છે, એક ડોસી ડોસાને હજી વ્હાલ કરે છે..!  કવિતા યાદ આવી જાય.

એમને મળીને ઉઠતા અમે શું મદદ કરીએ એવું પુછ્યું તો એમણે કહ્યું, 'તમને યોગ લાગે એ...'

અમે કહ્યું દર મહિને તમારા બેઉને ચાલે એટલું રાશન આપીશું. વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન મળે એમાંથી ચા પાણી દવાના ખર્ચ કાઢજો ને છતાં ખૂટે તો કહેજો...

ઘૂળી મા જવાબમાં સારુ એટલું જ બોલ્યા પણ એમના મોંઢા પર રાજીપો વર્તાતો હતો...

આવા #નિરાધાર માવતરોને દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું અમે કરી રહ્યા છીએ.. આવા માવતરોને દત્તક લેવાનું પણ કરી શકાય... હાલ તો 195 માવતરોને સાચવવાનું કરી રહ્યા છીએ..

પણ આ કાર્ય સમાજના સહયોગ વગર શક્ય નથી. મદદ કરનાર સૌ પ્રિયજનોનો આભાર ને આપની આસપાસ રહેતા કોઈ આવા માવતરોને દત્તક લેવાની ખેવાના રાખે તો 9099936013 અથવા 9099936019 પર સંપર્ક કરવા વિનંતી..

Instances of female infanticide for the ‘centuries-old preference’ of a male child is a practice many follow.

Although prohibited and outlawed,  recently there were arrests made in Rajkot of personnel who performed gender determination tests.

“Sons will support us as we age, will perform our last rites and ….” The parents will list out many emotional and cultural reasons for them to prefer sons over daughters. 

I know many parents who have taken refuge in old age homes despite of having sons, of sons beating their parents… it makes me question the medieval mindsets and practices.

We provide ration to Hajjan Ma and Jagshi Kaka, who do have a son. VSSM does not provide ration kits to couples or individuals who have son/s, we compel the son to care for their parents.  “Their son does not even ask their well-being, their living condition is pitiable. They live like destitute.” Ishwarbhai had told us.

Hence, we began providing monthly rations to them. However, the question of why isn’t the son looking after them always bothered me.

I had the opportunity to meet the couple during my visit to Dungarsan. I inquired about their son, “he comes and sees us once in a year, doesn’t even support us financially. We have lost hope in him. This is our destiny.”

“What will he give, these people have to feed him when he is here! It is better…” Surdaskaka speaks after he overhears our conversation.

I decided to stop the conversation here. It was better to not put them through more pain.

But examples like these should be brought to light for the understanding of ‘son-crazy’ parents.

VSSM nurtures 185 such elderly in need by providing monthly ration kits and taking care of their needs.

દીકરાની તમન્નામાં દીકરીઓને ગર્ભમાં જ મારી નાખવાનું ઘણા કરે. 

રાજકોટમાં હમણાં જ આવી રીતે ગેરકાયદેસર ગર્ભપરીક્ષણ કરનારા પકડાયા..

દીકરાની ઘેલછા રાખનાર વ્યક્તિઓને પુછીએ કે દીકરો કેમ જરૃરી તો કહે, ઘડપણની લાઠી, મરીએ ત્યાંરે કાંધ આપે વગેરે વગેરે...

હું કેટલાય માવતરોને મળુ છુ જેઓના દીકરા છે છતાં તેઓ વૃદ્ધા આશ્રમમાં જીવે છે. દીકરા મારતા હોવાનું પણ સાંભળુ છું અને રહી વાત કાંધ આપવાની તો ક્યા જમાનામાં જીવીએ છીએ એ પ્રશ્ન સતત થાય.

હજ્જનમા અને જગશીકાકાને અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપીએ. આ બેઉને દીકરો છે. દીકરો હોય તેમને અમે રાશન ન આપી. દીકરાને અમે મા-બાપની ચાકરી કરવા સમજાવીએ પણ અમારા કાર્યકર ઈશ્વરે કહ્યું, આ બેઉનો દીકરો તો ભાળ કાઢવાય આવતો નથી. ઓશિયાળા છે બેઉ.  હાલત પણ ખરાબ છે. 

એટલે અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું પણ દીકરો કેમ ચાકરી કરતો નથી એ પ્રશ્ન મને મૂંઝવતો.

ડુંગરાસણ ગઈ એ વખતે આ માવતરને મળવા ખાસ ગઈ ને દીકરા અંગે પુછ્યું, કાકા કહે, 'એ બારો રે. વરસે કોક દાડે યાદ આવે તો આવે. પણ પૈસા બૈસા કે ટેકો ન કરે. અમેય હવે આશા નથી રાખતા.. અમારા કરમ..'

અમારી વાતો ગામના સુરદાસકાકા સાંભળે તે એમણે કહ્યું, 'એ શું આપે? આવે તો એના ખવડાવવાની ચિંતા આમને કરવાની આના કરતા....'

કાકા- કાકી બેઉ દુઃખી હતા વધારે પુછીને એમને દુઃખી ન કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું.

પણ દીકરા પાછળ ઘેલા મા-બાપ માટે આ દાખલો સમજવા જેવો છે.. 

ખેર આવા 185 થી વધુ માવતરોને અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપીએ. તેમની નાની મોટી જરૃરિયાતો પણ સાચવીએ... 

આપને મદદની ઈચ્છા હોય તો 90999- 36019 પર સંપર્ક કરવા વિનંતી. અથવા 90999-36013 પર પેટીએમ પણ કરી શકાય.

“I worked until I could, I cannot anymore. Walking a few feet is difficult for me now. I beg for food from the families in this village. During rains, I remain confined to home. If someone from the neighbourhood remembers to bring food they come and give me or else I just drink water and go to sleep at night.”

Kashima, from Patan’s Bandhvad shared her sentiments when we asked her if she appreciates the fact that now a monthly ration kit reaches her from VSSM. 

It is the very generous gesture from well-wishing donors of VSSM that it has had the good fortune to become instrumental in providing ration kits to the elderly, needy and destitute individuals.

VSSM has encountered numerous such individuals who struggle to find enough grains to make even a single meal in a day. Couples with no kids to look after, couples who have children but have been left to fend for themselves. In some instances, the children do care but they have difficulties in managing two square meals in a day. We were contemplating on how to takes care of such destitute elders. “Help us with food,” was the suggestion most had. It was an apt suggestion but cost was a major concern. We planned to go ahead with the suggestion hoping that like always help will pour in for sure. 

A few days back VSSM’s Mohanbhai was in the villages of Patan to distribute the ration kits to the elderly when he got generously showered with as many blessings as they could. Kashima spoke for the video and made sure she conveyed her blessings to me too…

VSSM has decided to provide a ration kit to such needful elderly every month. You can choose to be their guardian son or daughter and support towards the kits.

 It should be noted that some elderly do receive old-age pension from the government. However, that amount gets used in expenses towards their medicines etc.

'કોમ થતું તું' તો હુદી કીધું.. હવ હેડાતું નઈ. કોમેય થતું નઈ એટલ ગોમમોથી મોગીન ખાવા ખઉં.. વરહાદ પોણી હોય તો ઘેર બેહી રહું.. વાહના કોઈન ખબર પડ અન ઇમના ઘેર થોડું પડ્યું હોય તો મન ખવાર નઇ તો પોણી પીન પડ્યા રેવાનું...'

પાટણના બંધવડ ગામના કાશીમાને મહિનાનું અનાજ આપ્યાં પછી અનાજ આપ્યું તે ગમ્યું? એમ પૂછ્યું એના જવાબમાં એમણે ઉપરની વાત કહી...
આવા નોધારા પરિવારોના આધાર બનવાનું નસીબ આપ જેવા પ્રિયજનોની મદદથી શક્ય બન્યું છે..
કહે છે અન્ન દાન મહા દાન.. પણ આ દાન યોગ્ય વ્યક્તિને, યોગ્ય જગ્યાએ આપવું અગત્યનું...

ગામડાંઓમાં વિહરતા એવાં કેટલાંય માણસોને અમે દીઠા. આ બધાને અને અનાજ ને જાણે આડવેર હતું..

ક્યાંક એકલા તો કયા પતિ પત્ની બેય બુઢાપાના ભારને વહન કરતા... બાળકો હોય તો જરા આશરો રેત પણ બાળકો નસીબમાં નહોતા.
જો કે કેટલાક એવા માવતર પણ હતા જેમને બાળકો હતા પણ એતો પોતાનો માળો લઈને માં કે બાપને મૂકીને જોજનો દૂર જઈ બેઠા... પોતાનું પરાણે પૂરું કરે આવામાં માં બાપ એની મેળે જ રેઢા મુકાઈ ગયેલા...
આવી કપરી હાલતમાં જીવતા માવતરને જીવનની પાછલી અવસ્થા વસમી લાગે નહિ માટે શું કરી શકાય એ વિચારતા જ કેટલાક માવતરોએ બે ટંકના રોટલા જડી જાય એવું ગોઠવી આપવા કહ્યું... વિચાર સારો જ હતો પણ આ બધાના ખર્ચની પણ ચિંતા કરવાની ને?
પણ ખેર હંમેશા કુદરત મદદ કરે છે તે આમાંય કરશે એમ વિચારી આ માવતરના જઠરાગ્નિને સંતોષવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું..

તાજેતરમાં પાટણ જિલ્લામાં રહેતાં વડીલોને VSSM ના કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈ એ રાશનની કીટ આપી પછી એમણે આશીર્વાદનો ધોધ વરસાવ્યો...અને કાશીમાં એ તો વિડિયોમાંય કહ્યું અને મને ફોન પર પણ વિશેષ વાત કરી...
દર મહિને આ માવતરને અનાજ આપવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું છે... આપને પણ આ માં બાપના શ્રવણ એ દીકરો કે દીકરી કોઈપણ સ્વરૂપમાં બનવા અને આ કાર્યમાં સક્રિય મદદ કરવા વિનંતી...
ફોટોમાં રાશન કીટ સાથે આપણા પ્રિયજનો...અને આ લોકો જેવામાં રહે છે એ પણ દશ્યમાન છે...

સરકારની મદદ કેટલાક વડીલોને વૃધ્ધ પેન્શનના રૂપમાં મળે પણ એ એમને દવા કે અન્ય ખર્ચ માટે મજરે આવે...આ ખાસ નોંધવું રહ્યું...
