Mittal Patel meets Jivatba 

Jivat Ba walks with difficulty, relying on the support of her two hands and feet.

Because of her physical condition, she never married and continued to live with her parents in their home.

As long as her parents were alive, things were manageable. But after their passing, life became a struggle.

She has no one to care for her on a daily basis.

Her neighbors and distant relatives offer occasional help, but her loneliness is deep.

She lives in Santokpura village, near Kheralu in Mehsana district.

Her house is not really a house — it’s a fragile mud hut, with severe leaks during monsoon.

There is no toilet or bathroom, and that adds to her daily hardships.

She also doesn’t have a ration card, which means no access to government food assistance.

When our volunteers Rameshbhai and Pareshbhai came to know about Ba’s condition, they included her in our Mavjat (care) program, and we began providing her with monthly ration.

But upon seeing her living conditions, Rameshbhai felt deeply moved and insisted that Ba should also get a proper house.

Around the same time, we received a call from Urvibahen from Canada.

She said:“If I can help build a home for a needy person, please let me know. When we first came to Canada, we had no home of our own, and I still remember what that felt like. Being a part of giving someone a home is a deep joy.”

We shared Jivat Ba’s story with Urviben, and she immediately agreed to help build Ba's home.

Because of the monsoon rains, removing Ba’s existing mud hut was a bit difficult, but it has now been taken down.

Before starting the foundation digging, Rameshbhai and Pareshbhai wished for a Bhumi Pujan (land worship) to be performed.

When we recently traveled near Kheralu, we visited Ba’s home.

Ba performed the Bhumi Pujan herself, and now, construction of her new house will begin.

When we asked Ba what kind of home she would like, she simply said:

“Just a single room with a porch, and a toilet and bathroom at the back. If the toilet is at the back, it’ll be easier for me.”

Her request was practical and touching, reflecting her physical limitations.

We will build her home exactly as she needs it.

Not everyone has the ability to use their God-given blessings for others.

Only those touched by divine grace can offer such selfless generosity.

Thanks to people like Urviben, we are able to carry out such meaningful work.

We are deeply grateful for the empathy and compassion shown by all such well-wishers.

Let us continue to pray for strength and resources to help many more people like Ba.

જીવત બા બે હાથ અને પગના ટેકાથી વાંકા ચાલે. શરીરની આ હાલતના લીધે એમના લગ્ન ન થયા. એ માતા પિતા સાથે પિયરમાં જ રહ્યા. મા - બાપ જીવતા હતા ત્યાં સુધી એમને વાંધો ન આવ્યો પણ એમના ગયા પછી તકલીફો ઊભી થઈ. 

એમની ચાકરી કરનારુ કોઈ નહીં. આમ પડોશી અને દૂરના એમના સગા એમનું ધ્યાન રાખે. પણ ઓશિયાળી તો ખરી જ. 

મહેસાણા જિલ્લાના ખેરાલુના સંતોકપુરા ગામમાં એ રહે. રહેવા સરખુ ઘર નહીં. કાચુ માટીનું છાપરુ. ચોમાસામાં સખત ચુવા થાય. ટોયલેટ બાથરૂમની સુવિધા નહીં તે એમાં પણ તકલીફ. રેશનકાર્ડ પણ એમની પાસે નહીં.

અમારા કાર્યકર રમેશભાઈ, પરેશભાઈને એમના વિષે ખ્યાલ આવ્યો ને એમણે બાને રાહત રહે તે માટે અમારા માવજત કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત દર મહિને રેશન આપવા અમને કહ્યું. બાને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. પણ એમના ઘરની હાલત જોઈને પણ રમેશભાઈને જીવ બળે. એમણે બાનું નાનકડુ ઘર થાય તે માટે પણ વાત કરી. 

આ દરમ્યાન જ અમને કેનાડાથી ઊર્વીબેનનો ફોન આવ્યો. એમણે કહ્યું. "કોઈ જરૃરિયાત મંદ પરિવારનું ઘર બાંધવામાં હું મદદરૂપ થઈ શકુ તો મને જણાવજો. અમે કેનેડા આવ્યા ત્યારે પોતાનું ઘર ન હોવાથી જે અનુભવ્યું એટલે થાય કે કોઈને ઘર આપવામાં નિમિત્ત બનવું એ મોટુ સુખ."

ઊર્વીબેનને જીવતબાની વાત કરીને એમનું બાંધવા મદદ કરવા કહ્યું. એમણે તુરત એ સ્વીકાર્યું.

બાનું છાપરુ ચોમાસા દરમ્યાન અને સતત વરસાદના કારણે હટાવવું થોુડુ મુશ્કેલ બન્યું. પણ હમણા એ હટાવ્યું. પાયા ખોદવાનું શરૃ કરતા પહેલા ભૂમીનું પૂજન થાય એવી પરેશભાઈ, રમેશભાઈની ઈચ્છા તે હમણાં ખેરાલુ બાજુ જવાનું થયું ત્યારે જીવતબાના ત્યાં પણ જવાનું થયું.

બાના હાથે જમીનનું પૂજન કર્યું. હવે ઘર બાંધકામ શરૃ કરીશું.

બાને પૂછ્યું કે કેવું ઘર જોઈએ તો કહે, "એક રૃમ ઓસરી અને ઘરના પાછળના ભાગમાં ટોયલેટ બાથરૃમ બાંધી આપજો. ઘર પાછળ બાથરૃમ ટોયલેટ હોય તો મને સારુ રહે."

બાની આ વાત સમજાય એવી હતી. એમને ચાલવામાં તકલીફ એટલે આ વ્યવસ્થા કરવા એમણે કહ્યું. અમે એમની ઈચ્છા મુજબનું ઘર બાંધી આપીશું. 

 પ્રભૂએ આપેલા પરમ ધનની લાહણી કરવાની તાકાત બધામાં નથી. પરમ કૃપાળુ પરમાત્માની જેના પર કૃપા થાય એ આવી લહાણી કરી શકે. ઊર્મીબેન જેવા અનેક સ્વજનો આવા કાર્યોમાં અમારી સાથે છે માટે આવા કામો થાય છે. આપ સૌની આ લાગણી માટે આભારી છું.

બા જેવા અનેકોને મદદ કરી શકીએ એવી ઈશ્વરને પ્રાર્થના...

Pain should only be given to the extent one can bear it.

But in the case of Khemiba, it felt like boundless suffering had taken permanent residence, and joy had forgotten her address entirely.

Khemiba is not very tall. Her stomach is severely swollen—tight like a water pot. If one didn’t know her age, they might think she was pregnant.

When we asked gently, “What happened, Ba?” she said, “It’s a tumor.”

We responded, “Then let’s get an operation done so you can be free from this.”

But Ba replied, “The doctor said if you operate, the old lady will die.”

Her face was expressionless. Eyes vacant and dull.

She lives in Navi Sedani village of Vadgam, Banaskantha.

Her house was built with government aid back in 2002, but now it’s almost in ruins. During monsoon, it leaks badly.

When our volunteers Pareshbhai and Rameshbhai learned about her condition, they visited her. They removed the damaged roof and arranged for tin sheets to be installed—covering the toilet, bathroom, and front porch with sloped roofing.

But Ba had one wish—to meet us once.

We were on our way to meet the Banaskantha Collector regarding the issues faced by nomadic communities, and we stopped by to meet Khemiba.

What we saw left us speechless.

Inside Ba’s house was a single photograph.

I asked, “Ba, who is this?”

She said, “My son. If he were alive and healthy, I wouldn’t be drowning in this sorrow.”

And with that, she broke down in tears.

Her other son is disabled—unable to walk. He wasn’t home.

We asked, “Where is he?” She said, “He’s gone out to beg for food.”

Some kind villagers occasionally bring food for this mother and son, but their situation is extremely tragic.

It’s hard to understand how such a state of life can exist.

Ba has cancer in her stomach. And she seems to be waiting for death.

Her only concern is: “If the house is repaired, my son can stay here safely. Maybe in the future, someone from the family will get married, and a girl will agree to live here.”

She talks again and again about getting the house fixed.

I heard in her cracked, resigned voice—like a stone that has turned into a mother’s heart—“Khamma, my child”, and I saw something divine in her brokenness.

Currently, mother and son are living in a relative’s house. But she says, “That’s not ours. I want something that’s truly ours.”

When we offered her rations and asked, “Will you be able to cook this?”

She pointed to her swollen stomach and said, “I can’t even sit properly.”

Then added, “If I give it to a neighbor, maybe they’ll cook it for us.”

We assured her: we will take care of that too.

We will repair Ba’s house in memory of our beloved Kushalbhai.

With the support of our respected Kishorbhai Patel—our beloved uncle, we’ve already built many ‘Kush Homes’, and Khemiba’s house will be the next in that series.

But seeing someone live in such conditions tears at your soul.

May nature never give anyone so much pain that they forget what happiness even feels like...

We prayed silently for relief from her suffering as we left her home.

And now—we will build Ba’s home, quickly

પીડા સહન થાય એટલી જ આપવી. આમ પારાવાર વેદના ને સુખ તો જાણે ખેમીબાના ઘરનું સરનામુ જ ભૂલી ગયું હોય એવું અમે જોયું.

બાની ઊંચાઈ ઝાઝી નહીં. ને પેટ તો ગાગરડી જેવું, એકદ કઠણ. ઉંમર ન થઈ હોય તો જાણે ગર્ભવતી હોય એવું લાગે. 

શું થયું બા એવું પુછ્યું તો કે, ગાંઠ છે. અમે કહ્યું, તો ઓપરેશન કરાવી લઈએ તમને નિરાંત થાય ને બાએ કહ્યું, ડોક્ટર ના કેહ. ઓપરેશન કરશો તો ડોશી મરી જશો.

બાના ચહેરા પર કોઈ ભાવ નહોતા. નિસ્તેજ થયેલી આંખો. બનાસકાંઠાના વડગામના નવી સેદણીગામમાં એ રહે. ઘર તો સરકારી સહાયથી 2002માં બનેલું. પણ એ ઘર તો હવે પડુ પડુ થાય. ચોમાસામાં તો ચુવા થાય.

અમારા કાર્યકર પરેશભાઈ અને રમેશભાઈને બાની માહિતી મળી તે બેય એમને મળ્યા ને એમના ઘર પરનું ધાબુ ઉતારી ત્યાં પતરા નાખી ટોયલેટ બાથરૃમ ને ઓટલા આગળ પતરા નાખી ઢાળિયું કરી દેવા કહ્યું. પણ એમની ઈચ્છા બાને એક વખત અમે મળીયે એવી તે  બનાસકાંઠા કલેક્ટર શ્રીને વિચરતી જાતિઓના મુદ્દે મળવાનું હતું તે મળીને અમે ખેમીબા પાસે પહોંચ્યા. ને સ્થિતિ જોઈને મન શૂન્ય થઈ ગયું.

બાના ઘરમાં એક ફોટો હતો. મે કહ્યું, બા આ કોણ તો કહે, મારો દિકરો. જુવાનજોધ એ હોત તો મારે આ દુઃખના દાડા ના હોત. ને બા રડી પડ્યા.

એમના બીજા દિકરાના પગ ચાલતા નથી. એ વિકલાંગ છે. એ ઘરે નહોતો. અમે પુછયું એ ક્યા ગયો તો કહે, એ ખાવા માંગવા ગયો. 

આમ તો ગામમાંથી કેટલાક સેવાભાવી માણસો આ બેય મા-દિકરાને જમવાનું આપી જાય. પણ સ્થિતિ અત્યંત દયનીય.

આવી હાલત કોઈની કેમ હોય એ ખરેખર નથી સમજાતું.

બાના પેટમાં કેન્સરની ગાંઠ છે ને બા જાણે મરવાની રાહ જુએ. ઘર સરખુ થાય તો દીકરો રહી શકે ને ઘર ભવિષ્યમાં કુટુંબવાળાને મળશે એમ વિચારી કોઈ ચોકરી કરી લે. એવી બાની ભાવના. તે ઘર સરખુ કરી દોની વાત એ વારેવારે કરે. ખમ્મા મારા લાલ એવું પથ્થર થઈ ગયેલી મા કહે એવું જ ક્યાંક ખેમીબામાં જોયું.

હાલ મા-દીકરો પોતાના સંબંધીના ઘરમાં જ રહે. પણ પોતાનું એ પોતાનું એવું એ કહે. 

રાશન આપીએ તો તમે રાંધો એવું બાને પુછ્યું તો કહે, મારાથી તો બેસાતુંયે નથી આ પેટ જુઓ. પણ પડોશમાં કોઈકને આપુ તો એ રાંધી આપે ખરા.

અમે એ પણ કરીશું.

બાનું ઘર અમારા પ્રિય કુશલભાઈની સ્મૃતિમાં ઠીક થાય એવું કરીશું. આદરણીય કિશોરભાઈ પટેલ- અમારા પ્રિય અંકલની મદદથી અમે ઘણા કુશ હોમ બાંધ્યા. ખેમીબાનું ઘર પણ એ સીરીઝમાં આગળ બાંધીશું.

પણ આવી સ્થિતિમાં જીવતા માણસોને જોઈને જીવ બળે. 

કુદરત એટલુંયે દુઃખ ન આપ કે આ જગતમાં સુખ છે આ વાત જ ભૂલી જવાય... દુઃખ હરી લેની પ્રાર્થના ત્યાંથી નીકળતા નીકળતા ઈશ્વરને કરી.

Free Settlements...

How do such names come about sometimes? Hearing this name, the first thought is that it must refer to settlements of people living for free. And in a way, that's true.

In the country and around the world, there are many people whose situations are dire. Buying a house is impossible for them; even the thought of renting comes with challenges, so they start living in makeshift shelters or tents on government land.

However, among them, there are some shrewd individuals who, while making arrangements, keep the hope that if the government clears the land tomorrow, we might also get something, thus reserving their spots in these free settlements. But there are also many genuine people in real need.

Such free settlements exist in every city, big and small. Recently, I went to Bhavnagar, and there are over 500 families living in a free settlement there.

Some time ago, a notice was issued to vacate the area for all residents, causing widespread fear. There is a large population of the Kangsiya community in this free settlement. Many of them we have even given loans to for building homes, and we've also applied to the collector for permanent housing for them. Following their application, the process for allocating plots was initiated.

When we went to discuss whether they would be willing to relocate if plots were allocated by the government around villages near Bhavnagar, people from other communities also approached us. Communities like Bharwad and Suthar, who are also in a weak position, asked, "If we’ve lived here for years, why isn’t our situation being considered by the government alongside the Kangsiya community?"

The point was valid. We told them to also present their case. The government will certainly consider it.

It seemed more desirable that families living in the free settlement for years be allotted a designated plot of land. Yes, there will be verification to ensure that these people do not have any other address elsewhere.

From our experience, when such matters come to the government's attention and we present our case, the issues are viewed with sensitivity, and resettlement has occurred.

We wish for a favorable solution for the people in Bhavnagar’s free settlement...

મફતિયુપરુ... 

ક્યારેક થાય આવા નામો કેવી રીતે પડતા હશે? આ નામ સાંભળીને પ્રથમ વિચાર મફતમાં રહેનાર લોકોની વસાહતનું નામ હશે એ આવે.. ને એક રીત વાત સાચી પણ..

દેશ અને દુનિયામાં અનેક લોકો એવા છે જેમની પરિસ્થિતિ ખરાબ. ઘર ખરીદવાનું તો એમના માટે અશક્ય, ક્યાંક ભાડાનું ઘર ખરીદવાનો વિચાર આવે પણ એમાંય પનો ટૂંકો પડે એટલે સરકારી જમીન પર છાપરા કે કાચી પાકી વ્યવસ્થા કરીને એમાં રહેવાનું શરૃ કરે.. 

જો કે આમાં કેટલાક માથાભારે માણસો પણ પોતાની વ્યવસ્થાઓ પેલું રૃમાલ મુકીએ તો કાલે સરકાર જગ્યા ખાલી કરાવે તો આપણને પણ કાંઈક મળે એ આશયથી મફતિયાપરામાં જગ્યા રોકે... પણ ઘણા ખરા લોકો એકદમ ખરેખર જરૂરિયાતવાળા..

આવા મફતિયાપરા નાના મોટા દરેક શહેરમાં હશે.. હમણાં ભાવનગરમાં ફુલસર જવાનું થયું ને ત્યાં પણ 500 થી વધારે પરિવારો મફતિયાપરામાં રહે..

થોડા સમય પહેલાં જગ્યા ખાલી કરવાની અહીં રહેતા તમામને નોટીસ મળી.. સૌ ભયભીત.. 

મફતિયાપરામાં કાંગસિયા સમુદાયની મોટી વસતિ. એમાંથી ઘણાને બે પાંદડે થવા અમે લોન પણ આપેલી ને એમને કાયમી જગ્યા મળે તે માટે કલેક્ટર શ્રીને અરજી પણ કરેલી.. તે એમની અરજી અન્વયે એમને પ્લોટ ફાળવવાની પ્રક્રિયા હાથ ધરાઈ.. સરકાર દ્વારા ભાવનગર આસપાસના ગામમાં રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફળવાય તો તમે રહેવા જશો કે કેમ તે અંગે વિગતે વાત કરવા જવાનું થયું ત્યારે અન્ય સમુદાયના લોકો  પણ અમારી પાસે આવ્યા. 

ભરવાડ, સુથાર વગેરે જેમની સ્થિતિ પણ નબળી.. એ લોકોએ કહ્યું, અમે પણ વર્ષોથી અહીંયા રહીએ તો કાંગસિયા સમુદાયની સાથે અમારો વિચાર સરકાર ન કરે?

વાત મુદ્દાની હતી. અમે કહ્યું, તમે પણ રજૂઆત કરો.. સરકાર ચોક્કસ વિચારશે...

મફતિયાપરામાં વર્ષોથી વસતા પરિવારોને નિયત ચો.મી.ની જગ્યા ત્યાં જ આપી દેવાય એ વધારે ઈચ્છનીય એવું એમની સાથેની વાત પરથી લાગ્યું..

હા ચકાસણી ચોક્કસ થાય કે એ લોકો પાસે અન્ય કોઈ જગ્યાએ પોતાનું સરનામુ નથી.. 

અમારા અનુભવે સરકારમાં અમે જ્યારે આવી બાબતો ધ્યાનમાં આવે ને રજૂઆત કરીયે ત્યારે સંવેદનાથી મુદ્દાઓ જોવાય છે ને પુનઃવસન પણ થયા છે..

ભાવનગરના મફતિયાપરામાં પણ લોકોને પસંદ આવે તેવો ઉકેલ આવે તેવું ઈચ્છીયે...

"During monsoon we had to put cotton in the ears of the children &  then tie the ears with cloth & make them sleep. Many times while cooking, small black caterpillars would fall in the cooking vessel. What to do ? It would be nauseating to see them pile up. But we are helpless. We do not have a concrete house and who does not wish that ? But we are "Bhartharis" and our whole life we just played a primitive musical instrument & sang Bhajans and lived on whatever society gave us. We never could have surplus money so could not build or own a house. It is my desire that I have my own house with a foreground. My parents & grandparents also wished that they had their own house. Their wish remained unfulfilled. But because of Tohidbhai from VSSM our wish has been fulfilled"

This was said by Bhikhiben Bharthari of Raigadh village in Sabarkantha.

In 2017, the ration cards of these people staying in temporary structures became APL from BPL. In BPL one gets more food grains which is very important for them. Met Tohidbhai at the Collector's office while resolving the row related to BPL cards.

We got the BPL Ration Cards done. Also after much effort, the land was allotted for these families thanks to the co-operation of the panchayat. On this plot of land , the houses will be constructed. I went to the settlement to decide what type of houses they wanted. I was welcomed very warmly. They said they wanted roofed homes. Roofed home with one room, kitchen, toilet, bathroom would be quite expensive. The families said Rs 1.32 lakhs will come from Government, VSSM well wishers will contribute and the balance amount would be contributed by Villagers. They said they would not like to have houses free. What a noble thought.

Donation came from Dr Nitin Suman Shah's Heart Foundation. I am grateful to Dr Nitinbhai.

We decided to start the work immediately. We will get the foundation work done as soon as the rains stop. The Prime Minister's resolve, administration's support and society come together, the houses will definitely be constructed.

Many thanks to the administration of Sabarkantha. With their kind feelings this work was done.

 'ચોમાસામાં તો છોકરાંઓને કાનમાં રૃ નાખી કપડુ બાંધીને ઊંઘાડવા પડે.  ઘણી વખત રસોઈ કરતી વખતે છાપરાં ઉપરથી આ ચુડેલો(નાની કાળી ઈયળ) રાંધવાનું રાંધતા હોય એમાં પડે. શું કરવાનું? એમનો ઢગલો જોઈને ચીતરી ચડે પણ શું કરીએ? પોતાનું ઘર એ પણ પાક્કુ થાય એની હોંશ કોને ન હોય પણ અમે રહ્યા ભરથરી આખી જીંદગી રાવણહથ્થો વગાડી હાલરડાં ને ભજન ગાઈને સમાજ જે આપે તેના પર નભ્યા. પૈસા ટકાની ઝાઝી સગવડ અમારી પાસે ન મળે એટલે અમે પોતે ઘર કરી શકીએ એવી સ્થિતિયે નહીં. પણ સાચુ કહુ મારી બહુ ઈચ્છા મારો ચોકો (મૃત્યુ સમયે ઘરના આંગણામાં કે ઘરમાં મૃતદેહને ગાયના છાણનું લીંપણ કરીને સુવડાવે તે) મારી પોતાની જગ્યા, મારા ઘરમાં થાય એવી હતી. મારા જેવી ઈચ્છા અમારા મા-બાપે એમના મા-બાપે કરી હશે. પણ કોઈની ફળી નહીં. પણ આ તોહીદભાઈ(VSSMના કાર્યકર)ના પ્રતાપે મારી ફળી.

સાબરકાંઠાના રાયગઢના ભીખીબહેન ભરથરીએ આ વાત કરી. 

2017માં છાપરાંમાં રહેતા આ પરિવારોના રેશનકાર્ડ BPL માંથી APL થઈ ગયા. BPL રેશનકાર્ડમાં તેમને અનાજ વધારે મળે જે એમના માટે મોટો આધાર સમુ. વળી એમની સ્થિતિ તો જેવી હતી એવી જ હતી તો BPL રેશનકાર્ડમાંથી તેમના કાર્ડ APL કેવી રીતે થયા? એની રાવ લઈને કલેક્ટર કચેરીએ ગયા ને ત્યાં તોહીદભાઈ સાથે ભેટો થયો. 

રાશનકાર્ડ તો અમે BPL કરાવી આપ્યા. સાથે તેમને રહેવા જમીન મળે તે માટે પણ મથ્યા. આખરે પંચાયતની લાગણીના લીધે આ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ ફળવાયા.

હવે આ પ્લોટ પર ઘર બંધાશે.

કેવા ઘર બાંધવા એની વાત કરવા વસાહતમાં ગઈ. એમણે સુંદર સ્વાગત કર્યું. પછી ધાબાવાળા ઘર કરજોનું કહ્યું.

ધાબાવાળા વળી એક રૃમ રસોડુ, ટોયલેટ, બાથરૃમવાળા ઘર બાંધવા ઘણા પૈસા થાય. તો આ પરિવારોએ કહ્યું, સરકારના 1.32 આવશે. VSSM મદદ કરે ને અમે પણ થોડા કાઢીશું. સાવ મફતનું અમારે નથી જોઈતું. કેવી અદભૂત લાગણી. 

સરકાર, આ પરિવારોની પોતાની રકમ ઉપરાંતની મદદ હાર્ટ ફાઉન્ડેશન- ડો. નિતીન સુમન શાહ કરશે. આદરણીય નિતીનભાઈની આ લાગણી માટે આભારી છું.

ઝટ કાર્ય શરૃ કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું છે. બસ વરસાદ થોડા ખમૈયા કરે તો પાયા ખોદાઈ જાય ને કામ ચાલુ થઈ જાય. 

પણ ઘર વગરના તમામ પરિવારોને ઘર આપવાનો વડાપ્રધાન શ્રીનો સંકલ્પ વહીવટીતંત્ર અને સમાજ સાથે આવે તો ચોક્કસ પૂર્ણ થાય.

સાબરકાંઠા વહીવટીતંત્રનો પણ આભાર. એમની લાગણીથી આ કાર્ય થઈ શક્યું.

"Our relationship with our huts is like that of a mud-stone & a leaf"

Shri Maheshbhai from Rafareshwar village in Morbi District said this. We could not understand what he meant so we asked him to explain what he meant. . He said that mud-stone & leaf are always together.

They are like close friends. One cannot do without the other. When wind blows with strength, the mudstone sits on the leaf and saves the leaf. When it rains, the leaf sits on the mud-stone & saves the  mud-stone.

However, when there is a thunderstorm with rain neither can save the other. Our relationship with our huts is like that. When it rains, it saves us and when there is a strong wind we hold the ropes of the hut tightly and save the hut.

But when there is a thunderstorm with rain neither of us can protect the other.

Maheshbhai enumerated this disastrous anecdote with a laugh. For years these families stay in huts in the outskirts of Morbi. In the hope that one day they will get a permanent place to stay they continue to dwell there. 

However they have no resources to buy the land nor do they have any idea how to go about getting the benefits from the government.

We at VSSM noticed their plight. Our colleagues and co-workers, Kanubhai & Chhayaben helped prepare their application for land for constructing houses on it. However the plot allotment was not happening.  CM Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel is very sympathetic & helpful towards the work we are doing. With his instructions & collector's support allotment happened. In Jambudiya village 119 families will benefit from it. Their happiness could not be hidden. They will now get a proper roof over their heads. However, people from nearby places have put pressure on administration to not allot the plot.The dream to own houses seem to remain a dream for these people.We are making a strong representation to the collector and other officers not to obstruct and grant permission at the earliest. We are hopeful that we get an affirmative reply from the admin soon.

I will definitely tell the people from Jambudiya who are objecting that it is very wrong to claim ownership of land which has been rightfully allotted to these homeless people.

I earnestly wish that these nomads soon get this land for their houses.

'ઢેફા અને પાંદડાને એકબીજા હારે જેવો સંબંધ અમારે એવો સંબંધ અમારા ઝૂંપડા હારે!'

મોરબીના રફાળેશ્વરના મહેશભાઈએ અમને આ વાત કરી. જો કે અમને આ મોઘમ વાત સમજાણી નહીં. અમે એમને ઢેફુ અને પાંદડાની વાત સમજાવવા કહ્યું ત્યારે એમણે કહ્યું, પાંદડુ અને ઢેફુ જોડાજોડ રહે બેયને જબરી દોસ્તી. પવન જબરો ફૂંકાય ત્યારે ઢેફુ પાંદડા પર બેસી જાય અને પાંદડાને બચાવે અને વરસાદ વરસે ત્યારે પાંદડુ ઢેફા પર બેસી જાય ને ઢેફાને બચાવે. પણ જ્યારે વાવાઝાડો સાથે વરસાદ આવે ત્યારે બેમાંથી એકેય એકબીજાને બચાવી ન શકે. 

અમારો સંબંધ આ ઝૂંપડાં હારે એવો. વરસાદ આવે ત્યારે ઝૂંપડુ અમને બચાવે. પવન આવે ત્યારે ઝૂંપડાના દોરડા પકડી અમે બેસી જઈએ અને ઝૂંપડાને અમે બચાવીએ પણ જ્યારે વાવાઝોડા હારે વરસાદ આવે ત્યારે અમે બેય એકબીજાને બચાવી ન શકીએ. આ અમારી જિંદગી..'

વિપદાની વાત મહેશભાઈએ હસતા હસતા કહી. વર્ષોથી આ પરિવારો ઝૂંપડા બાંધી મોરબી આસપાસના વિસ્તારોમાં રહે. પોતાને કાયમી જગ્યા મળે જ્યાંથી કોઈ એમને ખાલી ન કરાવે એવી મેળવવાની આશા વર્ષોની પણ એ ખરીદવાની ક્ષમતા નહીં. સરકાર ગરીબ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ આપે પણ એ માટે શું કરવું એ સમજાય નહીં.

VSSM ના ધ્યાને આ પરિવારો આવ્યા. અમારા કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ, છાયાબહેને તેમને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ મળે તે માટેની અરજીઓ તૈયાર કરી કચેરીમાં આપી.

પણ પ્લોટ ફાળવણીનું કાર્ય થાય નહીં. રાજ્યના મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી ભુપેન્દ્રભાઈ પટેલ અમારા કાર્યોમાં ખુબ લાગણી રાખે. મદદ પણ કરે. તેમની સૂચનાથી અને કલેક્ટર શ્રીની લાગણીથી 119 પરિવારોને જાંબુડિયામાં રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફળવાયા. 

આ પરિવારોનો હરખ સમાતો નહોતો. હવે અમે પાક્કા ઘરવાળા થાશું એ સમણું એ જોવા માંડ્યા. ત્યાં એમણે જે જગ્યા ફળવાઈ ત્યાં આજુબાજુના લોકોએ દબાણ કરી દીધાનું જાણ્યું.

પોતાના ઘરનું સમણું રોળાતુ આ પરિવારોને જણાઈ રહ્યું છે. અમે કલેકટર શ્રી તેમજ સંલગ્ન તમામ અધિકારીઓને આ બાબત ધ્યાને લઈ જમીનનો કબજો આપવા રજૂઆત કરી છે. આશા રાખીએ હકારાત્મક પરિણામ મળે.

અને જાંબુડિયાની જમીન પર દબાણ કરનાર લોકોને પણ કોઈને મળેલા આશરા પર પોતાનો હક ખોટી રીતે દર્શાવવો એ ધરમ નથી એવું ચોક્કસ કહીશ. 

વર્ષોથી વગડો ખૂંદતા પરિવારોને પોતાની જમીન સત્વરે મળે તેવું ઈચ્છીએ...

“This settlement of ours is huge, yet some families still stay in mud homes; and most houses also lack access to water. It would be a relief if water reached these homes and the owners of mud houses can have brick-cement homes.

During a recent meeting, the community of Paandva village of Mahisagar’s Balasinor block shared the above sentiments. We ensured that their homes would not remain kuccha for long because our Prime Minister dreams of a pucca home for all the homeless families. We also briefed them that the government has implemented the ‘Nal-se-Jal’ scheme to ensure potable water reaches each household.

We have brought the living condition of this settlement to the notice of the district collector and will continue to follow up with the authorities until their issues are resolved. We hope the solution happens soon.

The Raval community of Paandva village earns their living through agriculture or small-scale independent ventures. We offered to support them in whatever way they deemed possible. The community members share a great bond we pray for their continued harmony and well-being.

 "અમારી વસાહત કેટલી મોટી છે પણ બધે પાણી નથી પહોંચતું. ઘણા પરિવારોના ઘરો હજુ પણ ગાર માટીના બનેલા છે. પાણી અને બધાના ઘરો પાક્કા થાય તો અમને ઘણી રાહત થઈ જાય.."

મહિસાગરના બાલાસિનોર તાલુકાના પાંડવા ગામના લોકો સાથે જ્યારે બેઠક થઈ ત્યારે એમણે આ લાગણી વ્યક્ત કરી. પ્રધાનમંત્રી શ્રીનું સ્વપ્ન દરેક વ્યક્તિનું પાક્કુ મજબૂત ઘરે બને તેવું એટલે તમારુ ઘર કાચુ નહીં રહે તેવી વાત વસાહતમાં અમે કરી સાથે નલ જે જલ યોજના સરકારે કાર્યાન્વીત કરી છે તે અંતર્ગત પણ નળથી ઘરે ઘરે પાણી પહોંચાડવાની સરકારની મૂહીમની પણ વાત થઈ.

અમે કલેક્ટર શ્રીને આ માટે રજૂઆત પણ કરી છે અને જ્યાં સુધી પ્રશ્નનું સમાધાન ન થાય ત્યાં સુધી રજૂઆત કરીશુંનું કહ્યું છે.  આશા રાખીએ આ પ્રશ્નનો ઝટ નિવેડો આવે.

પણ પાંડવાગામની રાવળ સમુદાયની આ વસાહતના લોકોનો સંપ જબરો. સૌ નાના મોટા ધંધા કરીને કે ખેતીકામ પર નભે. અમે એમાં કોઈ રીતે મદદરૃપ થઈ શકીએ કેમ તે અંગે પણ વસાહતના સૌ સાથે વાત થઈ.. બસ સૌના શુભમાં નિમિત્ત બનીએ તેવી પ્રાર્થના..

 “No one was willing to marry their daughters with our sons!”

“Why?” I had wondered as you would after hearing this statement.

“We  lacked  pucca houses to stay in; who wants to send daughters to impoverished mud houses with tethered roofs?”

The Raval families of Patan’s Mitha Dharva village have been staying here on government wasteland in houses built of mud and straw. The families lack funds to buy land they could own. VSSM’s Mohanbhai was in contact with these families and understood their apathy. He helped them file applications for allotment of residential plots. The district Collector of Patan, Shri Anand Patel, is very compassionate human being; he immediately sanctioned plots for these families.

“We have been requesting for years, have rubbed off numerous  soles of our footwear, but the plots remained elusive.” Harjibhai shared.

It took constant follow-ups on the part of VSSM’s Mohanbhai, who would visit the collector’s office regularly. The administration was also sensitive toward these families, and the Sarpanch remained proactive. However, it took all these collective efforts for the Raval families to receive plots and aid to build houses over the plots.

As we always convey, the Rs. 1.20 lacs the government sanctions for the construction of a house is insufficient to support the construction cost of a decent home.

“Building a house happens once in a lifetime; hence we want to build a good one!” Harjibhai and others from the settlement opined. So the families began building their homes by drawing money from their savings or borrowing when they did not have enough. There would also be a time when the construction would pause because their reserves ran dry. But they managed to finish the construction and build houses big enough to meet the needs of growing families. It felt good to see the constructed, thoughtfully finished homes.

We will continue to persevere to get such homeless families their safe places. A home is a cocoon that one needs to rest a tired soul and rejuvenate to keep going.

We are grateful for our team, which does terrific work in their respective regions. For example, in Patan, Mohanbhai works hard to find needy families and link them with government welfare schemes.

I am grateful to Shri Pratulbhai Shroff for his generous support in keeping our team running; it wouldn’t have been possible any other way.

'અમારા છોકરાંઓને છોકરીઓ આપવા કોઈ રાજી નહોતું..'આ વાક્ય સાંભળીને આવું કેમ એ પ્રશ્ન સૌ કોઈને થાય.. મનેય થયો.. જેની ચોખવટ કરતા હરજીભાઈએ કહ્યું;  'રહેવા પાક્કુ ઘર નહીં, છાપરાંમાં કે માટીના કાચા બનાવેલા ઘરમાં રહીએ એમાં છોકરી દેવાનું કોણ કરે?'

વાત છે પાટણના મીઠા ધરવા ગામની. વર્ષોથી રાવળ પરિવારોગામની સરકારી જમીન પર રહે. પોતાની માલીકીની જમીન ખરીદવા તેમની પાસે પૈસા નહીં. 

અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈ આ પરિવારોના સંપર્કમાં. એમણે આ પરિવારોની ઘર નહોવાની દુવિધા સમજી અને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફળવાય તે માટે કલેક્ટર શ્રી આનંદ પટેલને અરજી કરી.

આનંદભાઈ એકદમ સંવેદનશીલ એમણે તુરત ..... પરિવારોને પ્લોટ ફળવાયા. 

હરજીભાઈ કહે, 'આ ઈતિહાસ હતો બેન. અમે વર્ષોથી પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે રજૂઆત કરતા પણ અમારા ચંપલ ઘસાઈ ગયા.'

VSSMના કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈનુ કલેક્ટર કચેરીમાં સતત ફોલોઅપ ને અધિકારીઓની પણ લાગણી, માટે આ પ્લોટ મંજૂર થયા. ને મકાન બાંધવા સહાય પણ મળી. ગામના સરપંચે પણ આમાં ઘણી મદદ કરી. 

મકાન સહાય તો 1.20 લાખ મળે આમાં સરખુ ઘર કેવી રીતે બંધા?. હરજીભાઈ ને વસાહતના અન્ય કહે, ઘર એક વખત જ બાંધવાનું. આમ પોતાની બચત ક્યાંક ઉછીના પાછીના ક્યાંક થોડા પૈસા ભેગા થાય ને થોડુ ઘર બાંધે પૈસા ખુટે એટલે વિરામ લે અને વળી પાછા પૈસા ભેગા થાય એટલે પાછુ શરૃ કરે. આમ ધીમે ધીમે આ પરિવારોએ ઘર બાંધવાના શરૃ કર્યા. 

પણ એમણે બાંધેલા ઘર જોઈને રાજી થવાય. લાંબુ વિચારીને એમણે ભવિષ્યમાં દિકરા વહુ આવે તો એમના માટે અલગ આયોજન થઈ શકે એ રીતે બાંધ્યા. હમણાં મીઠા ધરવા જવાનું થયું. બંધાઈ રહેલા અને ક્યાંક બંધાતા ઘરો જોઈને રાજી થવાયું. ઘર એ પગને વિશ્રામ આપે. આગળ વધવાની ધગશ પણ એનાથી થાય. બસ આવા ઘરવિહોણા મહત્તમ લોકોને ઘર મળે તે માટે આગળ પણ મથ્યા કરીશું. અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈનો આભાર. આવા જરૃરિયાતવાળા માણસોને શોધી તેમને સરકારીની યોજનાઓ સુધી પહોંચાડવાનું કરવું પણ બહુ અગત્યનું.આવા કાર્યો કરી શકીએ તે માટે મદદ કરનાર આદરણીય પ્રતુલભાઈ શ્રોફની આભારી છું. તેઓ અમારી ટીમની દોડતી રાખવામાં મદદ કરે..

Pasi Ma lives in Dabhan. Many years ago, her husband walked out of their marriage, leaving her to take care of the children. A little later in life, both her sons passed away, and Pasi Ma returned to her maternal home, where she now stays alone in a small hut. She works as a farm and domestic help, but with age catching up she can no longer work with the same energy. Also, she has shown symptoms of leprosy.

VSSM’s Rajnibhai got to know about Pasi Ma. He recommended support for her under our Mavjat initiative, where we support destitute elderly by providing them with a monthly ration kit and taking care of their medical needs. As a result, VSSM began providing a monthly ration kit to Pasi ba and initiated her treatment at Civil Hospital.

I was in Kheda recently and decided to meet Pasi Ma, and inquire about her well-being and if there was anything more we could do. But, I turned to blank the moment I saw her house. Tin sheets were arranged on the four sides and two above as roof was home to her. On the earth/floor was the chula and some household stuff.

"How do you cook during monsoons?" was my first question. How did Pasi Ma protect the chula when rain lashed, and where did she sleep during rains?

"I remain seated until the time it rains, I go and eat at anyone who sympathises and gives me food. Otherwise, I wait for the rains to stop. And rainy nights I sleep on my neighbour's porch. Pasi ma survived under pathetic living conditions. Giving her a decent roof is the least we could do.

Since we were looking for a prompt resolution to Pasi Ma's challenges, the thought of the very humble district Collector Shri Bachani saheb crossed my mind. If Pasi Ma had access to the benefits of Antyoday Ration Card and Elderly Pension, life would be a little easy for Pasi Ma. We spoke to Shri Bachani Saheb about Pasi Ma's condition. The next day, he instructed his team to provide her with Antyoday Card and Elderly Pension. Rarely does any officer work with such promptness. Our Pranams to Shri Bachani Saheb and the Kheda district administration for their support.

If the government allots a plot to Pasi Ma, the well-wishers of VSSM have donated enough to help us construct a house for Pasi Ma. If the plot doesn't come through, we will build a room at her current residency, but it would be better if the government allotted a plot. Shri Bachani Saheb has taken the initiative to do the needful and expedite the process. We will wait a month for the plot to come through so that Pasi Ma does not have to face these challenges for the rest of her life.

We are grateful to all of you for your donations towards building Pasi Ma's home and supporting her monthly ration kit.

And we are thankful to the district administration of Kheda and Shri Bacahni Saheb for their proactive support.

I wish to see Pasi Ma move into her own house as soon as possible; hopefully, that too shall happen quickly.

પસી મા ડભાણમાં રહે.

વર્ષો પહેલાં એમના પતિએ એમને ત્યજી દીધેલા. બે સંતાનો હતા પણ બેય ગુજરી ગયા. પસી મા પિયર આવી ગયા. છાપરુ કરીને એકલા રહે. 

ખેતમજૂરી અને લોકોના ઘરોમાં કામ કરવા એ જાય. પણ ઉંમર થતા કામ કરવામાં તકલીફ થવા માંડી પાછી રક્તપિતની બિમારીના લક્ષણો પણ ખરા. 

અમારા કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈના ધ્યાને પસીમા આવ્યા. અમે માવજત કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત જે માવતરો નિસહાય હોય, કામ કરી શકે તેવી ક્ષમતા ન હોય તેમને રાશન આપીયે. તે રજનીભાઈએ પસી માને રાશન આપવા લખ્યું ને અમે દર મહિને એમને કોઈ સામે હાથ લાંબો ન કરવો પડે તે માટે રાશન આપવાની શરૃઆત કરી. સાથે સિવીલમાં સારવાર પણ શરૃ કરાવી. 

હમણાં ખેડા જવાનું થયું તે વખતે પસીમાને ખાસ મળવા જવાનું થયું. ખાસ તો તેઓ બરાબર છે? કાંઈ તકલીફ નથી ને એ બધુ પુછવાની ટેવના લીધે.

પણ પસીમાના ઘરે ગયા પછી થોડીવાર માટે શૂન્ય થઈ ગઈ. પતરાની આડાશો ચારે બાજુ એમણે કરેલી ને બે પતરાં એમણે એ પતરાં ઉપર ઢાંકેલા એની નીચે ચૂલો ને થોડી ઘર વખરી ત્યાં પડેલી. 

સાહજિક પહેલો પ્રશ્ન ચોમાસામાં તમે રાંધો કેવી રીતે એ પુછાયો. કારણ બે પતરાની નીચે જ ચૂલો હતો વાછટ તો આવે જ. વળી વરસતા વરસાદમાં સૂવાનું ક્યાં એ પણ પ્રશ્ન થયો...

પસીમાએ ધીમા અવાજે કહ્યું, વરસાદ વરસતો હોય ત્યાં સુધી બેસી રહેવાનું.. કોઈને દયા આવે ને બોલાવે તો એના ત્યાં ખાઉ. બાકી વરસાદ બંધ થાય એની રાહ જોવાની. જ્યારે ચાલુ વરસાદે પડોશીની ઓશરીમાં એ સૂઈ જાય. 

કેવી કરુણ હાલત. અમે છાપરુ સરખુ કરી આપવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. 

ત્યાં કલેક્ટર શ્રી બાચાણી સાહેબ યાદ આવ્યા. ખુબ જ ભલા અધિકારી. ખેડાનો કાર્યભાર એ સંભાળે. પસી માને અંત્યોદય રાશનકાર્ડ અને વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન મળે તો ટેકો રહે. એ માટે બાચાણી સાહેબનું ધ્યાન દોર્યું ને એમણે બીજા દિવસે બા ને કાર્ડ ને પેન્શન આપવાનું કર્યું. આવી ત્વરાથી ખુબ ઓછા અધિકારીને કામ કરતા જોયા છે.. બાચાણી સાહેબ અને ડાના અધિકારીગણને આ માટે પ્રણામ કરવા ઘટે.

બાને જો સરકાર ઘરથાળનો પ્લોટ આપે તો અમે મકાન બાંધવા પૈસા ભેગા કર્યા છે. VSSM સાથે સંકળાયેલા ઘણા સ્નેહીજનોએ મદદ કરી છે. પ્લોટ ન મળે તો એ જ્યાં રહે છે ત્યાં એકરૃમ બાંધી દઈશું પણ પ્લોટ ફળવાય તો સારુ. બાચાણી સાહેબને વાત કરીને એમણે એ કાર્ય પણ ઝડપથી કરવા અધિકારીઓને કહેશેનું કહ્યું. અમે મહિનો રાહ જોઈશું જો પ્લોટ ફળવાય તો એના પર ઘર બાંધીયે તો પસી માને એ જીવે ત્યાં સુધી નિરાંત થઈ જાય... 

પસીમાને ઘર બાંધકામમાં તેમજ દર મહિને રાશન આપવામાં મદદ કરનાર સૌનો આભાર.. અને ખેડા વહીવટીતંત્ર ખાસ તો કલેક્ટર શ્રી બાચાણી સાહેબનો આભાર....

બસ પસીમા પોતાની જગ્યામાં સરસ ઘરમાં રહેવા જાય એવું ગોઠવાય એમ ઈચ્છું...

Whom would you call a good officer?

A  question I get frequently asked while speaking a public lectures. “One who is interested in public welfare, one who does not procrastinate progress behind the tangles of rules and regulations, but makes progress  possible even within the limiting rules and regulations,” remains my response.

The government has allotted residential plot to 159 nomadic families of Gondal. The next step was to begin construction on the same. Social Welfare officer Pandya Saheb is as compassionate as Aal Saheb. Both the officers had realised that the government aid of Rs. 1.20 lakhs is not enough for construction of a decent house.

Aal Saheb asked us to construct the houses of these families.

VSSM had bitter experience of constructing 65 houses at Rajkot’s Rampara Beti. The settlement had no facility for water. Despite our repeated appeals to the concerned authorities, they did not act. As a result, VSSM had to spend Rs. 5.30 lacs on water alone. Apart from this the efforts we had to put in to change the documents of  identity and proofs have tired us. The construction of sanitation units can be accomplished  under the MNREGA, but that too cannot be availed at Rampara Beti.

As a result of the above mentioned challenges we have far exceeded our construction budget in Rampara Beti. What if we experience similar challenges at Gondal?

We shared about these challenges with Shri Rajesh Aal sir, following which he immediately put his team to action. The Block development officer, Mamlatdar and all the concerned officials were summoned where he shared the intention of supporting construction of houses for these 159 families and instructed  to accomplish the task within the stipulated time frame. He directed the officials to provide power and water connections within 10 days and to level the land within the same time frame too. Aal sir also expressed the need to bring in  other well-wishers to contribute to the cause so as to build a strong house at the first instance.

Such compassionate officials are rare to find, I salute his sentiments towards the marginalised. No one is ever bothered to find if the houses were ever constructed on the allotted plots or to check the difficulties the families face as they begin to construct their houses.

If each official begins to work as Aal Saheb and Pandya Saheb, it is for sure that this county would not have a single homeless family.

As I began to leave after meeting the families who had been allotted the plots, a lady walks up to me and says, “Ben, we live in huts made with jute roofs. Summers are endured but it is a challenge to pass winters and monsoons. Kindly ensure that our houses are built as soon as possible. I am a rag picker but will pay Rs. 10,000 towards the construction of my house. Such amazing sentiments under such difficult living conditions.

We are grateful to the officials of Gondal for being instrumental in ensuring these families have a roof over their heads.

Almighty is definitely pleased with your gesture. May it inspire other officials to take such initiatives…

અચ્છા અધિકારી કોને કહેશો? 

મોટાભાગે વ્યાખ્યાન આપવા જવું ત્યારે લોકો દ્વારા આ પ્રશ્ન અચુક પુછવામાં આવે ને હું કહુ, જેમને પ્રજાના કલ્યાણમાં રસ હોય જે ફલાણા ને ઢીંકણા નિયમો બતાવી કાર્ય ટાળવાની જગ્યાએ નિયમોને લોકોને અનુકુળ પડે તેવા બનાવે તે મારે મન અચ્છા અધિકારી...

આવા અચ્છા અધિકારીનો આજે પરિચય કરાવું.. વાત છે ગોંડલના પ્રાંત કલેક્ટર શ્રી રાજેશ આલ સાહેબની..

ગોંડલમાં વિચરતી જાતિના 159 પરિવારોને સરકારે રહેવા પ્લોટ ફાળવ્યા.  હવે વાત આવી મકાન બાંધવાની.. સમાજ કલ્યાણ અધિકારી પંડ્યા સાહેબ પણ આલ સાહેબ જેવા જ લાગણીવાળા. તેમણે અને આલ સાહેબે જોયું કે સરકાર મકાન બાંધવા 1.20 લાખ રૃપિયાની સહાય પ્રત્યેક પરિવારને કરે પણ તેમાં ઘર બાંધવું મુશ્કેલ. 

આલ સાહેબે અમને આ પરિવારોના ઘર બાંધવાનું કામ માથે લેવા કહ્યું... 

રાજકોટના રામપરા બેટીમાં 65 વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારોના ઘર બાંધવાના અનુભવો કડવા હતા. રામપરાબેટી વસાહતમાં પાણીની વ્યવસ્થા નહોતી 

તંત્રમાં રજૂઆત કરી છતાં કોઈ વ્યવસ્થા નહીં એટલે અમારે 5.30 લાખથી વધુ ખર્ચ પાણી પાછળ કરવો પડ્યો. આ સિવાય લોકોના આધાર પુરાવા બદલાવવા જે મહેનત કરવી પડી તે થકવાડી નાખે એવી.. 

વળી શૌચાલય ને મનરેગા અંતર્ગત પણ મકાન બાંધકામમાં મદદ મળે પણ આ બધુ રામપરાબેટીમાં અમે હજુયે મેળવી નથી શક્યા.. 

અમે ઘર બાંધકામમાં મદદ કરવાનું નક્કી કરેલું તેના કરતાં ખર્ચ અનેક ગણો વધ્યો..આવું ગોંડલમાં થાય તો?

રાજેશ આલ સાહેબ સામે આ બધી વાત કરી... ને એમણે તુરત એમની ટીમને કામે લગાડી. તાલુકા વિકાસ અધિકારીથી લઈને મામલતદાર શ્રી, નગરપાલિકા ને અન્ય લાગતા વળતા સૌને બોલાવી તેમણે 159 પરિવારોના ઘર બાંધકામમાં આપણે મદદરૃપ થવાનું છે એ ભાવના વ્યક્ત કરી ને સૌ અધિકારીઓને સમયમર્યાદામાં કાર્ય પૂર્ણ કરવા આદેશ આપ્યો. જમીનનું લેવલીંગ, પાણી અને લાઈટ તો દસેક દિવસમાં પહોંચાડી દેવાનું એમણે અધિકારીઓને કહ્યું... એ સિવાય મકાન સહાયમાં અન્ય સ્જનોને જોડવાનું એમણે કહ્યું જેથી મજબૂત ઘર બંધાય....

આવી ઉમદાભાવના વાળા અધિકારીઓ બહુ જુજ છે... તેમની આ લાગણીને સલામ કરુ છુ. બાકી પ્લોટ ને મકાન સહાય આપ્યા પછી કોઈ એ મકાન પૂર્ણ થયા કે નહીં તે જોવા જતું નથી અથવા વ્યક્તિ મકાન પુર્ણ નથી કરી શકતો તો કારણ તપાસવાનું થતું નથી...

આલ સાહેબ, પંડ્યાસાહેબની જેમ દરેક અધિ્કારી કામ કરવા માંડે તો આ દેશમાં ઘરવગરનો એક માણસ ન રહે એ નક્કી...

જેમને પ્લોટ ફળવાયા તેમની સાથે વાત કરીને હું નીકળી રહી હતી ત્યારે એક બહેને આવીને કહ્યું, બેન કંતાનના છાપરામાં રહીએ. ઉનાળો તો નીકળી જાય પણ ચોમાસુ ને શિયાળો કાઢવો બહુ કપરો.. તમે ઝટ ઘર બાંધવાનું કરજો. હું કાગળ વિણીને પણ મારુ ઘર બાંધવા તમને દસ હજાર આપીશ...કેવી સ્થિતિને કેવી ભાવના....

આવા પરિવારોને ઘર આપવામાં ગોંડલ અધિકારીગણ નિમિત્ત બનવાના.. આપ સૌનો ઘણો આભાર... 

કુદરત તમારી આ પહેલ માટે ખુબ રાજી થશે...ને તમારી આ પહેલથી અન્ય અધિકારીઓ શીખે એમ ઈચ્છીશ...

‘Ben, can you help us with the gas stove and LPG cylinder for the beautiful homes you have helped us build. The shoot from the wood-fired chulas will blacken the walls of our brand new kitchens; also, it would look so much better if the settlement had pucca road passing through it. Can you put a request to the government?” Naviben, who for the first time in her life, will experience a pucca home.

VSSM, with the help of its well-wishing donors and government, has created one more settlement and built houses for 65 marginalised and homeless families. The thought that the families should have access to clean drinking water, made us write to WASMO. As a result, following the Chief Minister’s orders, the government has spent Rs. 19 lacs on building a fifty-thousand-litre tank at the settlement. Our well-wishing friend Shri Piyushbhai Kothari donated the community contribution for the tank. We are grateful to the government for the timely sanctions.

The construction of sanitation blocks is also underway in the settlement. We have sought government assistance and have written to the officials but are yet to receive any positive response. VSSM is spending around Rs. 25000 on each unit, yet we have not met the government guidelines, according to the officials. VSSM’s construction standards equal private construction levels, yet such response…

There is also the pending issues of construction of roads through the settlement; hopefully, the problems will be resolved soon, and we can provide a glorious housewarming to these 65 families of Sanjivani Society …

We want the families of this settlement to realise their potential by moving into a well-made house with basic amenities. Hopefully, the government expedites the pending issues of road and sanitation units.

વાત છે રાજકોટના રામપરાબેટીની..

'બેન અમારા ઘર તો સરસ બાંધ્યા પણ અમને ગેસનો બાટલો ને સગડી અપાવવામાં મદદ કરજો નહીં તો અમારા રસોડા કાળા પડી જશે.... અને આ આખી વસાહતમાં રોડ બની જાય તો આખી વસાહત કેવી સુંદર બની જાય તે એ માટે તમે સરકારમાં કેજો ને...'

જિંદગીમાં આમ તો પેઢીઓમાં પહેલીવાર પોતાનું ઘર જેમણે જોયું છે જેમાં એ રહેવા જવાના છે તેવા નવીબહેને આ કહ્યું..

65 પરિવારોના ઘર અમે સરકાર અને vssm સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્વજનોની મદદથી બાંધ્યા.. વસાહતમાં રહેવા આવનાર માણસોને પીવાના પાણીની તકલીફ ન પડે તે માટે વાસ્મો સંસ્થાને રજૂઆત કરાતા ને મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીના આદેશના કારણે પચાસ હજાર લીટરની ટાંકી 19 લાખના ખર્ચે સરકારે બાંધી. આ ટાંકી માટે લોકફાળો અમારા પિયુષભાઈ કોઠારીએ ભર્યો. સરકારનો આ માટે આભાર..

વસાહતમાં ટોયલેટનું કામ ચાલુ છે. અધિકારીને આ ટોયલેટ માટે સરકારી સહાય મળે તે માટે રજૂઆત કરી પણ એમનો જવાબ નથી મળ્યો. અમે એક ટોયલેટના બાંધકામ પાછળ ઓછામાં ઓછો 25000 થી વધુ ખર્ચ કર્યો છે. છતાં એમના કહેવા પ્રમાણે અમે સરકારના ધારાધોરણ પ્રમાણે કામ નથી કર્યું. 

કેટલું મજબૂત કામ કર્યું છે છતાં ધારાધોરણ?

વળી વસાહત વચ્ચે રોડ રસ્તાના પ્રશ્નો પણ છે.. એ બધુ સત્વરે ઠીક થાય તો આ સંજીવની સોસાયટીમાં રહેવા આવનાર 65 પરિવારોનો ભવ્ય ગૃહ પ્રવેશ કરાવી શકાય... 

આ વસાહત આ સમુદાયની આગવી ઓળખ બનવાની... સરકાર પણ વસાહતમાં રોડ રસ્તા બનાવવામાં આગળ આવે ને ટોયલેટ માટે મદદ કરે તેમ ઈચ્છીએ....
