Mittal Patel discusses Water Management with the villagers

“Can you help us make a lake in our village? Our village has a low lying site where the rainwater flows. Although it is not a traditional lake, we want to create a shallow pond. And it would be best if we did not dig deep because the potters still use the clay from here. We want to deepen it just enough to hold up the water flowing during monsoons. It would enable water to trickle into the ground and recharge the water tables. So can you help us deepen the spot and create a pond?”

Hiteshbhai from Banaskantha’s Kaant village requested the above from VSSM’s Naranbhai. However, the site was not a traditional water body that was filled with muck and deposits. Still, considering the wish of Hiteshbhai and the community members, we eventually made a pond at Kaant. VSSM dredged the soil while the community lifted the excavated soil. 

The community had been insisting I make a visit to Kaant, which I did during my recent visit to Banaskantha. The leadership of Kant village is proactive regarding water and environment conservation, and we plan to increase environmental initiatives in this village. 

We have reached a point when it is crucial to conserve each drop of rain; hence such requests from the community should only be honoured and fulfilled.

'અમારા કાંટનું તળાવ તમે ગાળી આપશો? ચોમાસાનું પાણી જ્યાં ભરાય છે તે જગ્યા પર તળાવ જેવું કશું છે જ નહીં. અમારે બહુ ઊંડુ પણ નથી કરવું. મૂળ એ જગ્યા પર માટી સારી છે. અમારા ગામના કુંભાર માટલા ઘડવા ત્યાંથી માટી લઈ જાય છે એટલે તળાવની બધી માટી નથી કાઢવી. પણ વરસાદનુ જેટલું પાણી આ જગ્યા પર આવે તે બધુ ત્યાં રોકાય અને જમીનમાં ઉતરે એ માટે તમે નાનકડુ તળાવ કરી આપો એમ ઈચ્છું છું. '

બનાસકાંઠાના કાંટગામના હીતેશભાઈએ આ વાત કરીને અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈએ કાંટની મુલાકાત કરી. એ પછી અમે ગામનું તળાવ ગાળવાનું અમે શરૃ કર્યું. 

હીતેશભાઈ અને ગામના સૌની લાગણીને અનુલક્ષીને અમે તળાવ જેવી સ્થિતિ નહોતી તે જગ્યા પર તળાવ ગાળવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. ગામે માટી ઉપા઼ડવાનું કર્યું ને સહુના સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી નાનકડુ તળાવ ગામની મરજી પ્રમાણેનું અમે ગાળ્યું. 

હમણાં બનાસકાંઠા જવાનું થયું તે વેળા ગામની પ્રબળ ઈચ્છા હતી માટે ખાસ કાંટ જવાનું થયું. પાણી અને પર્યાવરણને લઈને કાંટ જાગૃત ગામ. 

આગામી દિવસોમાં આ ગામમાં પર્યાવરણલક્ષી કાર્યો વધારે કરવાની ઈચ્છા..

પણ પાણીના ટીપે ટીપાને બચાવવાનું કરવું પડે તેવી સ્થિતિ પર આપણે પહોંચ્યા છે માટે આ દિશામાં વધારે કાર્ય થાય તે જરૃરી.

Better late than never… I am glad people have begun paying attention to the looming water crisis and are working towards adopting methods to conserve it.

Almost four years ago, we deepened the lake at Kankar village in Banaskantha’s Kankrej. After it was deepened, the lake could catch the rainwater, and with its linking to the Sardar Sarovar pipeline, the government also filled it up at least thrice during one year. As a result, the borewells that had dried up or were breathing their last have found a fresh lease of life as the water tables have gone up.

For the last three decades, we have been exploiting our groundwater reserves at an insane pace. We have almost emptied the water from the earth’s belly; when do we intend to replenish all we have taken out? What do we leave for our coming generations?

Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan share the waters of Narmada. Hence, we must practice prudence when it comes to using and managing the waters of Narmada and other rivers as well. 

When the Sardar Sarovar dam overflows during the monsoons if its waters can be used to fill up the lakes of regions like Banaskantha and Kutchh it will help raise the groundwater tables.

For the last six years, VSSM has been deepening the village lakes in Banaskantha. So far, we have deepened 190 lakes and plan to continue deepening more. This year with the soaring temperatures, our prayers to the Rain God has also intensified as we pray for abundant rains that could fill up the deepened lakes. 

And may the Sardar Sarovar also receive enough water to help fill up the parched water bodies.

જળસંચયનું કાર્ય ખુબ અગત્યનું... લોકો ભલે  થોડું મોડુ પણ એનું મહત્વ સમજ્યા એ ગમ્યું.

અમે ચારેક વર્ષ પહેલાં બનાસકાંઠાના કાંકરેજના કાકરગામનું ગામ  તળાવ ઊંડું કર્યું. તળાવ ઊંડું થયું તેમાં ચોમાસે પાણી ભરાયું સાથે નર્મદા પાઈપ લાઈન સાથે જોડી વર્ષમાં ઓછામાં ઓછા ત્રણેક વખત તળાવ ભરવાનું પણ સરકારે કર્યું પરિણામે ગામના ખેડૂતો કહે એમ, ગામના ઘણા ખેડૂતોના બોરવેલ ડચકા લેતા હતા, ઘણા તો બંધ જ થઈ ગયેલા એ બધા  આ તળાવ ભરાવાના કારણે સજીવન થઈ ગયા.

સતત પાણી ભરાવાના   લીધે ગામમાં પાણીના તળ પણ ઉપર આવ્યા. છેલ્લા પચીસ  - ત્રીસ વર્ષમાં આપણે અમાપ પાણી ભૂગર્ભમાંથી ઉલેચ્યું...   

પેટાળ  ખાલી કરી દીધા  પેટાળ પરત ભરવામાં નહીં આવે તો આવનારી પેઢીને આપણે શું આપીશું એ પ્રશ્ન છે.. વળી મા રેવા-  નર્મદાના પાણી પર ગુજરાત,  મહારાષ્ટ્ર અને રાજસ્થાન ત્રણેયને જોઈએ... 

આવામાં નર્મદાના  પાણીનું તેમજ એ સિવાયની નદીઓના પાણીનું યોગ્ય વ્યવસ્થાપન થાય તે જરૃરી.ચોમાસામાં નર્મદા ડેમ ઓવર ફ્લો થાય એ વખતે બનાસકાંઠા, કચ્છ  જેવા સુકા પ્રદેશના તળાવમાં કે જ્યાં  વરસાદ ઓછો છે ત્યાના જળાશયો ભરવામાં  આવે તો પણ ઘણો ફાયદો થાય..

અમે તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું છેલ્લા છ વર્ષથી કરીએ. અત્યાર સુધી  બનાસકાંઠામાં 190 તળાવો ઊંડા કર્યા અને હાલમાં આ કાર્ય ચાલી રહ્યું છે. આ વર્ષે મેઘરાજાને પણ પ્રાર્થના કે  મન મુકીને વરસે અને ગાળેલા બધા  તળાવો બરાબર ભરાય. સાથે સરદાર સરોવરમાં પણ એટલું પાણી આવે કે તરસ્યા બધાય જળાશયોની તરસ એનાથી સંતાષોય...

બાકી કાકરમાં ખોદલું તળાવ અને ખોદાયા પછી ભરાયેલું તળાવ.. ભરાયેલા તળાવનો ફોટો ગત શિયાળાનો છે..

“Ben, please deepen the lake in our village. We promise we shall offer best possible support and contribution!!”

Shri Arjunbhai Joshi, Sarpanch of Khorda village in Banaskantha’s Tharad block appealed us. Consequent to the request, a meeting with village leaders and community was organised.

We discussed how VSSM works in partnership with the village leadership and does not initiate any work without an agreement. 

The primary criteria for VSSM to take up the work of deepening village lakes are:

•     VSSM will only contribute towards the expenses of JCB incurred in the excavating the soil.

•     The soil will be ferried out by the villagers.

•     The community will also contribute in cash but the amount will not be used towards the cost incurred in ferrying the excavated soil.

Once the village leadership agrees to the mentioned conditions we proceed with further discussions and evaluations.

The first meeting for 2020 was organised at Korda village, where Sarpanch Shri Arjunbhai pledged personal contribution of Rs. 1,11,111, a staff of Panchayat also pledged his one month’s salary. Once the actual work begins we expect more contributions to pour in.

It is time we realise the gravity of the looming water crisis and collectively work to tackle it.

'અમારા ગોમમોં તળાવો ગાળો બેન, હારમ હારો સહકાર અમે ગોમના આલશ્....'

બનાસકાંઠાના થરાદના ખોરડાગામના સરપંચ શ્રી અર્જુનભાઈ જોષીએ આ કહ્યું અને ગામલોકો સાથે અમે એક બેઠકનું આયોજન કર્યું.

બેઠકમાં ઉપસ્થિતિ લોકોને અમે તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવા માટે ગામલોકોનો ફાળો પણ જોઈએ તેવી વાત કરી. મૂળ તો અમારા નિયમ પ્રમાણે જેસીબીનો ખર્ચ સંસ્થા આપે, માટી ઉપાડવાનું ગામના શીરે અને એ સિવાય ગામલોકો પૈસા ભેગા કરે જે તળાવ ગાળવામાં વપરાય. આ પૈસા માટી ઉપાડવામાં નહીં વાપરવા. આવા નિયમો સાથે સહમત ગામોમાં જ તળાવ કરવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું અને એ માટે આ વર્ષની શરૃઆતમાં થરાદના ખોરડ઼ાગામમાં અમે બેઠક કરી.

બેઠકમાં લોકો ભાગીદારીથી આ કામ કરવાની વાત કરી. ગામના સરપંચ અર્જુનભાઈએ રૃા. 1,11,111 તળાવ ગળાવવા પોતાના આપવાની જાહેરાત કરી તો, ગામના પંચાયતઘરમાં કામ શીરસ્તેદાર તરીકે કામ કરતા ભાઈએ પોતાનો એક પગાર આપવાની વાત કરી.

જો કે તળાવ ગાળવાનું હજુ શરૃ થયું નથી થશે એટલે સહકાર વધુ મળવાનો એ નક્કી...પણ દરેક ગામ જાગે અને પોતાની મા એવી ધરતીની ચિંતા કરે એ જરૃરી...

The Sardar Sarovar Dam opened 25 gates this year….signalling it was full to its brim.

In the past whenever the dam overflowed a thought always crossed  my mind, “what if these waters were taken to the parched and thirsty lands of North Gujarat, Saurashtra, Kutchh!!”

The rain helped bring water to lake

Finally the  Chief Minister of Gujarat made an announcement in this regard. The Sujalam Sufalam Canal, Dantiwada Dam and the lakes that had the pipeline for Narmada waters have been filled up with waters from the majestic Narmada.

In Banaskantha people rejoiced like never before. The waters from Narmada as well as the rains showed mercy this year. Deep inside I was fearing the worst. But the rain gods finally gave in.

In the past three years VSSM has facilitated and supported deepening of 87 lakes in Banaskantha.

This year the rains helped bring water to few lakes. One of which is in Suigaum’s Katav village. The picture shared here is only for your reference so it the on the ongoing water sensitization meeting.  The video is of Adhgaum shared by Sureshbhai  this morning. Apart from the rainwater, Narmada waters have also reached the lake.

The rains have brought the much needed cheer in the air. And the Narmada waters filling up the lakes doubled the joy.

Naran, Chirag and Bhagwan can breathe at peace  atlast. It was their efforts and hard work that have  resulted into such massive change in the community’s mindset towards water.

જ્યારે પણ ડેમ ઓવરફ્લો થતો ત્યારે એક વિચાર આવતો આ બધા પાણીને ઉત્તર ગુજરાત, સૌરાષ્ટ્ર અને કચ્છના નપાણિયા વિસ્તારમાં લઈ જવાનું થાય તો કેવું...
આખરે મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીએ આ અંગે જાહેરાત કરી..
સુજલામ સુફલામ કેનાલ, દાંતીવાડા ડેમ ઉપરાંત જે તળાવોમાં નર્મદા કેનાલની પાઈપ નાંખી હતી તે ભરવાનું સરકારે શરૃ કર્યું....

બનાસકાંઠો તો રાજી રાજી...
જો કે વરસાદે પણ લાજ રાખી.. બાકી મનમાં દુકાળ તો નહીં પડે એવો ભય પણ હતો...

In Banaskantha’s Vanva Rampura we deepened 5 lakes of which 3  now have water in it. Respected Shri. Bhanuben Shah from Mumbai donated Rs. 25 lakhs to deepen lakes in one village. There was a  small contribution from the government too. As a result of this massive  contribution we could undertake the deepening of all the 5 lakes in Rampura.

During our primary meetings to engage with the community and leadership of Rampura many had shared, “we don’t remember when our lakes were last deepened or cleaned!!” Whereas some shared it was during the last great famine Gujarat had witnessed that the lake cleaning works were carried out.

We do aren’t aware of the period of this great  famine they are talking about. But we are grateful that the lakes are now filled with waters. Hope the rain Gods continue to shower their blessings and fill up all the 5 lakes.

The Sarpanch and community of Rampura exhibited great understanding and support. VSSM’s Naran and Chirag remained at it and it is their hard work that is visible here.

My three very dear elders Nanditaben, Bhanuben and Rashminbhai… dear Nanditaben showed us the path, Bhanuben joined hands and respected Rashminbhai  opened our eyes and made us take up this immensely important task of water conservation. My regards and gratitude for your continued support and encouragement.

આવ રે વરસાદ, ઘેબરીઓ પરસાદ

ઊની ઊની રોટલી ને કારેલાનું શાક,

ગાઈને મેધાની રાહ જોતા'તે આવ્યો ખરો..

બનાસકાંઠાના વાવના રામપુરામાં પાંચ તળાવો અમે ખોદ્યા. જેમાંથી ત્રણ તળાવો ભરાયા જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.

મુંબઈના આદરણીય શ્રી ભાનુબહેન શાહે એક ગામમાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરવા 25 લાખની મદદ કરી. ઉપરાંત સરકારે પણ નાની મદદ કરી. 

જેના લીધે રામપુરામાં આ કામ થઈ શક્યું.

ગામના લોકો સાથે તળાવ ઊંડા કરવા બાબતે બેઠક થઈ ત્યારે એમણે કહેલું, 'અમારા ગામનું તળાવ ક્યારે ઊંડું થયું હતું તે અમને યાદ નથી' તો કોઈએ કહ્યું, 'પસીસો કાળ પડ્યો ત્યારે તળાવ ગળાયું હતું.'

ખેર પસીસો કાળ ક્યારે પડ્યો એનો ખ્યાલ નથી. પણ હાલ આનંદ તળાવ ગળાયા પછી એમાં ભરાયેલા પાણીનો છે.

રામપુરાના લોકો તેમજ સરપંચનો પણ આ કાર્યમાં અદભૂત સહયોગ મળ્યો...

કાર્યકર નારણ અને ચીરાગની જેહમત આ કામમાં સખત રહી...

પ્રિય નંદીતાબહેને આંગળી ચીંધી ભાનુબહેનને આ કાર્યમાં જોડ્યા તો આદરણીય રશ્મીનભાઈએ તળાવો ગળાય એ માટે કામ કરવા અમને ઢંઢોળ્યા..

During 2018-19 with the support from our well -wishers and communities, VSSM has managed to finish deepening of 70 lakes. Thank you all for welcoming  the idea and standing by us.

We dream of making Banaskantha green, and the first step towards it was saving the water and recharging the water ground water level. To enable the idea, we initiated the process of  deepening the lakes under the guidance of respected Shri Rashminbhai. The first couple of years 2016 and 2017  remained tremendously difficult. Mostly because the village communities refused to support. They would donate generously, in lakhs towards construction of bird feeders and temples around their village but when asked to ferry the excavated soil resulting from the deepening of lake, no one was prepared to do it for free!! Under such circumstances, to ask them to make financial contribution towards  the  task  of lake deepening  was out of question.

The mammoth task seemed challenging nonetheless, we weren’t prepared to make any amendments in our list of prerequisites. Amidst extreme working conditions we managed to deepen just 17 villages until 2017. Gradually, the village elders and communities began to understand us and in 2018-19 we have successfully deepened 70 lakes.

Our well-wishing friends have played an important role in the process, even the government aided deepening of 15 lakes and the cherry on the cake has been  the support we have received from the communities. The wisdom and large heartedness they have portrayed is worth saluting.

We are glad to witness this change with people coming together to give back all we have taken from our mother Earth.

After water it is trees we are planning to focus on, with the  upcoming Tree Plantation drive we have planned in Banaskantha villagers have already begun working for it. Before the onset of monsoon they have begun digging pits, filling it up with organic manure. Once the rains arrive we shall start planting  native trees in these villages.

VSSM has specially appointed a team to work on the tree plantation drive. Hope together we achieve the most.

And to the Mother Earth, hope we all understand your pain and give back all that we have taken from you.

 સૌના સહયોગથી 2018-19માં અમે બનાસકાંઠાના 70 તળાવોનું કામ પુર્ણ કરી શક્યા.. આપ સૌ પ્રિયજનો આગળ આ કામની વધામણી...

બનાસકાંઠાને હરિયાળુ કરવાનું સ્વપ્ન અમે સેવ્યું. પહેલું કામ તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું આદરણીય રશ્મીનભાઈના માર્ગદર્શનથી શરૃ કર્યું.

પણ 2016 થી લઈને 2017સુધીમાં આ કામમાં ઘણી તકલીફ પડી. લોકો સહયોગ ના કરે. 

ગામમાં મંદિર બાંધવા કે ચબુતરા કરવા લાખો રૃપિયા ભેગા થાય પણ તળાવ ખોદાય એની માટી મફત કોઈ ના ઉપાડે. આવામાં ગામ ફાળો આપે એ વાત તો વિચારી જ નહોતી શકાતી.

પણ અમે તળાવ ખોદાવવામાં કરેલા નિયમોમાં કોઈ બાંધછોડ નહોતા કરવા ઈચ્છતા એટલે તકલીફો વચ્ચે 2017 સુધીમાં માંડ 17 તળાવો ખોદાવી શક્યા હતા.

પણ પછી લોકો અમને સમજ્યા અમે લોકોને અમે સમજાવી શક્યા ને 2018-19માં અમે 70 તળાવો કર્યા.

આ તળાવો ઊંડા કરવામાં vssmસાથે સંક્ળાયેલા સ્નેહીજનોએ ખુબ સહયોગ કર્યો. સાથે 15 જેટલા તળાવો ઊંડા કરવા સરકારે પણ મદદ કરી. અને હા ગામની મદદ માટે તો ગામલોકોને પ્રણામ કરવા ઘટે...

રાજીપો.. ઘરતીનું ઋણ ચુકવાનું સુંદર કાર્ય થઈ શક્યું.

હવે વારો છે ઝાડ વાવવાનો.. શરૃઆત કરી દીધી છે. જે ગામો અમને સમજ્યા છે એ ગામોએ તો ખાડા કરવાનું અને તેમાં ખાતર ભરવાનું શરૃ કરી દીધું છે. આગામી દિવસોમાં ઝાડ વાવવાનું કરીશું.

વૃક્ષઉછેર માટેની અમારી નવી ટીમ પણ આ માટે તૈયાર થઈ ગઈ છે..

આશા છે ઉત્તમ કરવાની..

ને હે મા ધરતી તારુ દીધેલું વાલી મા તુજ ને ધરાવું.... 

એવી શુભ ભાવના સાથે સમગ્ર ધરતી પુત્રો તારી પીડા સમજે ને તારુ દોહેલું તને પાછુ આપે એવી તને જ પ્રાર્થના...

Mittal Patel meets the peeple of Shirwada Village

Many a times we get asked why did we initiate community water management efforts? An organisation working with the extremely marginalised nomadic and de-notified communities now involving itself in deepening of lakes and talking about raising the ground water-table in water starved regions of north Gujarat came as a surprise to many. But as we have written about it earlier, VSSM was required to engage in water management task to build an inclusive environment for the discriminated communities especially the nomads. Banaskantha is a district that records high concentration of nomadic settlements.  It is also a very feudal towards its approach towards the poor and down trodden. Non-availability of  water is a major issue in this dry, arid and drought prone district. The idea was to initiate a dialogue around water and build their sensitivity not just towards water,  but also the marginalised communities surviving around them. Also the communities who are at the bottom of the social fabric find it extremely difficult to access such life sustaining resources when they are subjected to hostile behaviour  of the villagers.

The lake deepened with the help of VSSM

Water is such issue that it is high time we give it the priority it deserves. Or we rest assured on the coming times that might witness water conflicts. Once we began talking about water, the farmers and village elders began calling us to work in their village. During our talks and meetings with them and the village leaders we would emphasis on how they can in turn work towards the poor from their village, how the village leadership can be more empathetic towards the nomadic and other communities who survive at the margins.

The current living condition of Valmiki Families

We had worked towards deepening of lakes in Shirwada village of  Kankrej block in 2018. Karshanbhai Joshi, the Sarpanch of the village is an extremely humble and polite gentleman. I would call him an ideal Sarpanch. He never hesitated to spend his own resources apart from the government’s for the welfare of the poor and development of the village. Someday I am going to write an article on him.

The current living condition of Valmiki Families

When we were conducting primary meeting in Shirwada, he mentioned to us about the homeless Valmiki  families of his village who survive under extremely poor conditions. Karshanbhai requested us to help him get them house. These families had erected shanties on whatever little space they found around the village. Some even stayed on the government wasteland. We requested for the records of the kuccha houses/shanties these families had built. Once the records are available we could apply to the government for obtaining assistance for construction of  houses. Karshabhai has initiated the process for the same.

Recently, Karshanbhai also requested us to talk to the government  authorities regarding primary issues of these families like ration cards etc. He has been trying his best as a Sarpanch but requested for our involvement in these matters as it might substantiate the efforts.  VSSM’s Naran will work on these matters.

This is one of the examples of how our initiative for water has helped make progress in making the marginalised inclusive. Yes progressive, compassionate  and broadminded leaders like Karshanbhai are a big asset in such progress.

We are hopeful that the 50 Valmiki families of  Shirwada obtain their permanent houses. And hope tribe of Sarpanchs and leaders like Karshanbhai increases.

કોઈ પણ કામ કરતા પહેલાં તે કામ કરીને શું મેળવવું છે તેનો પ્રથમ વિચાર કરવો પડે.

તળાવ ઊંડા કરાવવાનું કામ ખુબ અગત્યનું પણ અમે વિચરતી જાતિઓ સાથે કામ કરીએ તે કામ કરતા તળાવોનું કામ ઘણું નોખું.

જો કે પાણીનું કામ નહીં કરીએ તો આવનારા સમયમાં ટકવું મુશ્કેલ થશે એ વિચાર સાથે પાણીનું કામ અમે શરૃ કર્યું. પણ મુખ્ય ધ્યેય પાણીના કામથી ગામના વંચિતોને શું ફાયદો થશે તે વિચારી તળાવના કામો સાથે વંચિતોના કામને જોડ્યું.

ગામના ખેડુતોની વિનંતી પોતાના ગામમાં તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવા માટે આવે. એ પછી અમે ગામલોકો સાથે બેઠક કરીએ અને સંસ્થાના કામનો મુખ્ય ધ્યેય વંચિતોને મદદનો એ જણાવીએ. અને ગામના વંચિત- ગરીબ પરિવારને ગામ તરફથી વિશેષ શું મદદ મળશે તે અંગે વાત કરીએ.

કાંકરેજના શીરવાડાગામમાં અમે 2018માં તળાવ ખોદાવ્યું. સરપંચ કરશનભાઈ જોષી તો એકદમ ભલા માણસ. સરકારના પૈસા ઉપરાંત પોતે પણ ગામ વિકાસમાં પૈસા ખર્ચે. આદર્શ સરપંચ કેવા હોય તે જોવા માટે તો શીરવાડા જવું પડે. તેમની સેવાકીય પ્રવૃતિઓ વિષે પણ એક લેખ લખીશું.

તળાવ ખોદકામ માટે શીરવાડામાં મીટીંગ થઈ તેમાં તેમણે પોતાના ગામના વાલ્મીકી સમાજના પચાસ પરિવારો કે જેઓ અત્યંત ખરાબ હાલતમાં રહી રહ્યા છે તેમનું પાકુ ઘર બને તે માટે મદદ કરવા કહ્યું.

આ પરિવારોએ જ્યાં જગ્યા મળી ત્યાં કાચુ ઘર કે છાપરુ બાંધી દીધેલું. ટૂંકમાં જગ્યા માલીકીની નહીં. આ ઉપરાંત કેટલાક પરિવારો એવા પણ હતા કે જેમણે સરકારી ખરાબામાં છાપરાંવાળી દીધેલા. 

સરપંચ શ્રી કરશનભાઈને અમે આ પરિવારોએ છાપરાં કે કાચા ઘર બાંધ્યા છે તેની આકારણી આપવા કહ્યું. આકારણી મળે તો ઘર બાંધકામ માટે સરકારમાંથી મદદ મળી શકે.

સરપંચે હા પાડી અને એમણે એ માટેની પ્રક્રિયા પણ હાથ ઘરી.

તાજેતરમાં આ પરિવારોના પ્રાથમિક પ્રશ્નો જેવા કે રેશનકાર્ડ અને અન્ય બાબતે વાત કરવા સરપંચે અમને વિનંતી કરી. ખુબ તકલીફમાં જીવતા આ પરિવારોને સરપંચ એમની રીતે મદદ કરે પણ સંસ્થાગત રીતે સરકારી કામકાજમાં મદદ કરવા એમણે અમને વિનંતી કરી. 

કાર્યકર નારણ તેમને આ બાબતે વધુ મદદરૃપ થશે. 

ટૂંકમાં તળાવોના કામની સાથે વંચિતોના કામો થાય તે જોવાનું અમે કરીએ આવામાં કરશનભાઈ જેવા દરિયાદીલ સરપંચનો સાથ મળે તો ઉત્તમ કામ થાય તે નક્કી.

VSSM facilitates the process of desilting and deepening of lakes in Sui’s Morwada village…

On the day of Navoni Agiyaras, our forefathers committed their labour to the benefit of the community. They never worked for themselves  on this day. The entire village, equipped with their tools would head over to excavate the mud from the lake and work through  the entire day. Those were the days when government aid or grants never existed, the community  volunteered to work for the greater good and benefit of others. In short, they cared for their own resources.

VSSM has been working towards widening and deepening the lakes in the villages on the periphery of the Greater Rann. The ever expanding Rann has made the ground water of all these villages very saline. These are the villages where one cannot even sink a bore well.

Bhagwanbhai, Sarpanch of Dudhwa village shared the above mentioned tradition with us, our forefathers were wise enough to value and care for natural resources that provided for all and how we have moved away from these values.  

Nonetheless, people who appreciate and value natural resources are striving to make a difference but the damage we have done is so huge that it is always going to be ‘more the merrier’…. We want humongous amount of people joining the force that works towards protection of environment.

Sui’s Morwada village has no potable water. The moment you go below 7-8 feet the waters are  saline.  Vikrambhai, the community leader from Morwada narrates, “Ben, if we accumulate  sweet water, it will push back the saline water and will decrease the salinity. So if we try digging three-four feet trenches over all the available space in the village it will help us catch more rain water and benefit us. The farmers too will be able to use it for farming,” he opined.

Lake deepened

This underground salinity of the region forbids us from digging deep but one can always dig shallow and wide. We have excavated two lakes here, the community supported in ferrying away the soil. We also received government contribution for one of the lakes here.

The collective efforts of the community, organisation and government has resulted in deepening of lakes here. The villages here require more intense efforts, because availability of water has always been a challenge. The region receives water every four days. One will definitely learn to value  water and trees after travelling through this region.

નવોણી અગિયાસના દાડે અમારા ઘૈડિયા પોતાના સવારથું એકેય કોમ ના કરતા. અગિયારના દાડે ગાડામો તગારા, કોદાડી, પાવડા લઈન આખુ ઘર તળાવ ગાળવા જતું અન આખો દાડો તળાવમો મથતું. તે દાડે સરકારની કોઈ ગ્રોન્ટ બ્રાેન્ટ નતી. હૌ હાથે જ ગોમનું અન પોતાનું ધોન રાખતા.

બનાસકાંઠાના સુઈગામના રણને અડીને આવેલા અંતરિયાળ ગામો જ્યાં પાણી માટે બોરવેલ પણ શક્ય નથી એવા ગામોમાં અમે તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું કરી રહ્યા છીએ. આવા જ દુધવા ગામના સરપંચ ભગવાનભાઈએ અમને ઉપરની વાત કરી.

આપણા ઘૈડિયા ઝાડથી લઈને તળાવો ટૂંકમાં કહુ તો કુદરતી સંસાધનોનું જતન કરતા પણ આપણે એમના આ સંસ્કારો ભૂલી ગયા.

ખેર જેને સમજાય છે એ પોતાની રીતે પ્રયત્નો કરે છે પણ આ પ્રયત્નોમાં વધુ માણસો જોડાય તો સોનામાં સુગંધ ભળે.

સુઈગામનું મોરવાડા છ થી સાત ફૂટ ઊંડા જાવ એટલે ખારુ પાણી મળે. મોરવાડાના આગેવાન વિક્રમભાઈ કહે, 'બેન મીઠુ પાણી ભરાય તો ખારા પાણીને ધક્કો લાગે અને ખારાશ ઘટે. એટલે અમારા વિસ્તારમાં પડેલી ખુલ્લી તમામ જગ્યા ત્રણ થી ચાર ફુટ ખોદાઈ જાય અને તેમાં વરસાદી પાણી ભરાય તો અમને ઘણો ફાયદો થાય. ખેડુ આ પાણીથી ખેતી પણ કરી શકે.'

આ વિસ્તારમાં ઊંડા તળાવો ના થાય પણ પહોળા જેટલા કરવા હોય એટલા થાય. અમે ગામમાં બે તળાવો ખોદ્યા. ગામે પણ માટી ઉપાડવાનું પોતાના શીરે લીધું.

એક તળાવમાં તો સરકારે પણ ભાગીદારી કરી. ટૂંકમાં ગામલોકો, સંસ્થા અને સરકારના સંયુક્ત પ્રયાસોથી ગામના તળાવ ઊંડા થયા.

પણ આ વિસ્તારોમાં પાણીના કામોની ખુબ જરૃર છે. ચાર દિવસે પીવાનું પાણી આવે છે... આ વિસ્તારમાં ફરીયે ત્યારે પાણી અને ઝાડનું મુલ્ય વધુ સમજાય...

Stop. The earth is begging us to stop from ruining her completely….

How much further will we go? How much longer before we realize we have reached a  point of no return? It is a foregone conclusion that  our greed, our selfishness and our belief that we are entitled to exploit the precious natural resources in the manner we want has pushed our earth to the brink of complete destruction.

Ongoing lake deepening work

In Gujarat, in districts like Banaskantha, Mehsana, Patan and many more we have drilled our earth beyond 1000 feet for water. What is agonising is  we still aren’t prepared to stop or give back. How deep do we  intend to go ?? The day when the womb of our mother earth will have nothing to offer us is not very far. The day when our coming generations will curse us for emptying the earth’s coffers isn’t very far. The day we shall have no reply to, “What did you leave for us?” our children will ask.

In an effort to find positive answers to such unnerving questions, VSSM initiated participatory ground water preserving and rain water harvesting works in Banaskantha,  one of the most water starved district of  Gujarat. The efforts have resulted in deepening of 70 lakes across various villages.  The communities are waking up to grim realities, but the awareness required is far greater than what it is.  As mentioned, these are participatory or community supported efforts. We need the rural leadership to contribute towards this mammoth task. However, the willingness to contribute towards these tasks  either comes after great effort or just does not come. The same community will donate generously and collect lakhs in donations when there is a temple coming up. But, Rs. 500 per house for lake deepening is too much for them!!

“There can be no one more poorer than you all who shy from giving back for your own children and their children. The more you give the more you get yet, it is so difficult for you all to open your hearts to such cause.” I often tell to village leaders and communities who refuse to contribute.

Sometimes such words have deep impact and communities give whereas there are few who never change.

The Sarpanch and revenue officer of Ruvel village are humble folks. They had approached us with request to initiate water conservation works in their village. “If the villagers refuse to give, I will personally contribute enough,” the Sarpanch had promised.

We have begun deepening of lake in Ruvel. The villagers have taken care of ferrying the excavated mud while the cost of JCB is borne by VSSM. Rs. 50,000 has been promised by the Sarpanch which we will be using towards the excavation itself. Such thoughtful leaders need to be saluted.

The intent behind this post is the highlight the need for our immediate actions towards conserving the ground water and mindful use of water. The disastrous implications of our carelessness are just a stone throw away.

ભૂગર્ભજળની જોઈએ એવી ચિંતા આપણે નથી કરી રહ્યા..

1000 થી 1200 ફૂટના બોર કરી પાણી મેળવી લઈએ છીએ અને એનો આપણને રાજીપો છે.

પણ હજુ કેટલા ફૂટ ઊંડા જઈ શકાશે એ ક્યારેય વિચાર્યું છે?

જો આમ જ રહ્યું તો એક વખત ઘરતીમાના પેટાળમાં આપણને આપવા માટે પાણી જ નહીં બચે.

નીચા જઈ રહેલા ભૂગર્ભજળની સ્થિતિ જોઈને, આપણી આવનારી પેઢી,

'તમે અમારા માટે કશુંયે નથી રાખ્યું'

એમ કહીને આપણને ભાંડે નહીં એ આશયથી અમે જળ વ્યવસ્થાપનના કામો બનાસકાંઠામાં શરૃ કર્યા છે. જોતા જોતામાં 70 તળાવોનો આંકડો અમે પાર કર્યો.

આમ તો જાગૃતતા આવી છે પણ હજુ જોઈએ એવી નહીં.

આર્થિક સહયોગ તળાવ માટે આપવા ગામલોકો રાજી નથી હોતા. મંદિર માટે પળમાં વીસ લાખ ભેગા થઈ જાય પણ તળાળ માટે ઘર દીઠ પાંચસો આપવા ઘણા ગામો રાજી નથી થતા.

આવો ગામોને હું કહેતી હોવું છું કે, આપવાથી વધે અને આ આપવાનું તો તમારી આવનારી પેઢી માટે છે છતાંય નથી છૂટતુ તો તમારા જેવા દરિદ્ર આ દુનિયામાં કોઈ નથી જે પોતાના પરિવારની ભવિષ્યની ચિંતા નથી કરતા.

ખેર ક્યાંક આવું બોલવાનું કેટલાકને હૃદયમાં સૂળની જેમ ભોંકાય ને લોકો સહયોગ માટે તૈયાર થાય તો ક્યાંક નઠોર માણસો પણ જોવા મળે.

બંનેએ મળીને અમારા ગામનું તળાવ ઊંડું કરોની વાત કરી. ગામ સહયોગ નહીં આપે તો સરપંચે પોતે આર્થિક સહયોગ આપવાની વાત કરી. સલામ આવા સરપંચને...

હાલમાં રુવેલમાં તળાવનું કામ શરૃ થયું. માટી ઉપાડવાનું ગામલોકોના શીરે છે. જેસીબીનો ખર્ચ સંસ્થા આપે છે. આ સિવાય સરપંચ 50,000 જેટલો ફાળો આપશે એ પણ તળાવ ખોદકામમાં જ વાપરીશું.

પણ આ લખવા પાછળનો આશય દરેક ગામે ભૂગર્ભ જળ બાબતે ચેતવાનો સમય થઈ ગયો છે.. જાગો નહીં તો મોડુ થઈ જશે...

“Ben, we shall not only plant trees, but also create a nursery for plants.  We already have a person assigned with the responsibility of raising and caring for the trees. . Along with the trees we will raise 400-500 saplings for the plantation drive next year. This way we can plant trees over the land where the  gando baval  rules these days. The village wasteland will transform to green from the arid it is right now.”

Bhanabhai, sarpanch of Makhanu village was quite confident that this shall happen, “ It is not easy to carry our development related tasks these days. But the entire Makhanu Panchayat will stand besides us. Our Panchayat team is extremely strong and determined and we have the cooperation of our members.”

Bhanabhai’s narration on the village dynamics is absolutely true. There are Sarpanch who would go beyond their responsibility to get the work done, they would also never hesitate to spend their own money towards public works  while there are others who can be extremely selfish too.  It was because of  the leadership of Makhanu that we could get two lakes deepened from the contribution of the villagers while the third one deepened with government support.

The village  collectively decided to appoint Narsinhbhai as the caretaker for the trees, from 15th May onwards he will start preparing the soil and plantation beds for the upcoming tree plantation drive.

Bhanabhai and others have agreed to take up the responsibility of monitoring and driving the effort.

'બેન આ ફેરા ઝાડખા વાવશું ઈની હારો હાર નર્સરીયે કરશું. ઝાડખાની હાચવણી હાતર મોણસ તો રાખેલો જ હ. આ ઝાડખા હારોહાર બહો પાંનસો રોપા ઉસરે તો આવતા ચોમાસે ગોમના ચરામાં થેલા બાવળિયા કાઢીન તો આ રોપા રોપીએ તો ઘણી લીલોતરી થઈ જાય...'

મખાણું ગામના સરપંચ ભાણાભાઈ આ કામ થશે એવા ભરોષા સાથે આ વાત કરી રહ્યા હતા..

એમણે કહ્યું,

'પંચાયતના બધા સભ્યો આપણા કોમમાં આપણી હારો હાર ઊભા રેસે. અમાર સભ્યોની ટીમ મજબૂત હ. સભ્યોના સાથ સહકાર ઘણો હ નકર ગોમમાં વિકાસના કોમો કરવા આજ હેલા નહીં.'

ભાણાભાઈની વાત સો ટકા સાચી. કેટલાક ગામોમાં સરપંચ બહુ ઉત્સાહી પોતાના ઘરના પૈસા કાઢીને કામ કરે એવા તો કેટલાક સખત સ્વાર્થી...

ખેર મખાણુંની આવી મજબૂત ટીમના લીધે અમે ગામમાં બે તળાવો ગ્રામજનો અને એક તળાવમાં સરકારની મદદ લઈને ઊંડા કરી શક્યા.

ગામના નરસીહભાઈને પંચાયતના તમામ સભ્યોએ મળીને ઝાડની જાળવણી માટે સેવક સહાય સાથે નિયુક્ત કર્યા.

આગામી 15મેથી જ્યાં ઝાડ વાવવાના છે તે જગ્યા ફરતે વાડ કરવાનું નરસીહભાઈ શરૃ કરશે.

ભાણાભાઈ અને પંચાયતના અન્ય સભ્યોએ આ ઝાડની દેખરેખની જવાબદારી સ્વીકારી.

તથા વનીકરણ માટે સજ્જ મખાણું સરપંચની આગેવાનીમાં પંતાયતની ટીમ,

“Ben, when will you deepen the lake in our village?”

This was one constant question that Bhanabhai, the Sarpanch of Makhanu village and Ashokbhai, a young journalist from the village would keep asking VSSM’s Naran and me over the phone. They never stopped following up.

“We too want to do that and will do that but can we first discuss about the contribution the villagers are prepared to make?” we would respond.

“Ben, it is difficult for make people contribute for such works, but we shall definitely do something, can you first begin deepening the lake?” Bhanabhai would respond.

Respecting Bhanabhai’s statement and commitment we decided to begin the work of deepening and desilting the lake at Makhanu village and talk to the villagers on the matter of community contribution. The meeting was held over the hardly existent lake and the first to contribute was Bhanabhai Sarpanch, the villagers followed giving as much as they could. Apart from VSSM and the community we also received government’s contribution for the mentioned task. Although we would have loved the villagers to be more giving towards such work that is for the betterment of the entire community. We all acknowledge the fat that as a society we become more giving when it comes to building places of worship, however the same generosity is never reflected in works that are for the society in general. We depend on our lakes/water bodies and tree/forests, yet we hardly care about them. This is a bitter truth we at VSSM deal with every day.

We have envisaged a green and water sufficient Banaskantha, we are committed to realise that and that is why we will take the liberty of expecting the people of Banaskantha to be more giving.

The lake we were to deepen and desilt was encroached upon and filled up. However, the persistence the Bhalabhai and Ashokbhai showed needs to be applauded at this juncture.

'બેન અમારા ગામનું તળાવ ક્યારે ગાળશો?'

આ વિધાન સાથે મખાણુંગામના #સરપંચ ભાણાભાઈ અને ગામના યુવા પત્રકાર અશોકભાઈના ઢગલો ફોન કાર્યકર નારણ અને મારા પર આવ્યા કરે.

અમે કહેતા કે, 'તળાવ તો અમારેય ગાળવું છે પણ એ પહેલાં ગામલોકો પોતે પણ ફાળો આપે.'

સરપંચ કહે, 'ગુંજામોંથી ધર્માદા કોમ હાતર પૈસા કઢાવવા તો અઘરા. પણ કોક કરશું બેન તમે તળાવનું કોમ એક ફેરા શરૃ તો કરાવો.'

સરપંચના એ વિધાન પર અમે તળાવનું કામ શરૃ કરાવ્યું અને મખાણું ગામના લોકોને ભેગા કરીને ફાળાની વાત કરવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું. ગામલોકો તળાવમાં જ ભેગા થયા સરપંચે પોતાનું અનુદાન પ્રથમ આપ્યું ને પછી તો ગામના સૌએ પોતાનાથી શક્ય આપ્યું.

જે #તળાવ અમે ગાળવાનું શરૃ કર્તયું તે તળાવમાં દબાણ થઈ ગયેલું, તળાવ પણ પુરાઈ ગયેલું. આ તળાવ ગાળવામાં ગામનો ફાળો, vssmનો ફાળો અને સરકારની પણ મદદ મળી.

જો કે ગામલોકો વધુ ફાળો આપે તેવી અપેક્ષા છે પણ મંદિર બાંધવા આપણે જેટલી લાગણી બતાવીએ એટલી તળાવ માટે નથી. એ કડવી વાસ્તવીકતા છે. તળાવ એ આપણો આધાર છે પણ લોકોને એની ચિંતા નથી..

ખેર અમે એમ કાંઈ મુકવાના નથી. બનાસકાંઠાને હરિયાળુ પાણીથી ભરપુર બનાવવાનો સંકલ્પ છે તે ગામલોકો પર થોડો અધિકારભાવ પણ જતાડવો પડશે....

પણ #બનાસકાંઠાના સૌ લોકો સહયોગ આપે એવી અપેક્ષા પણ રાખુ છું....

બાકી #મખાણું ગામના લોકો, સરપંચ શ્રી ભાણાભાઈ તથા અશોકભાઈને તો પ્રણામ કરવા ઘટે.
