"We want to unite and work for our community's education and economic growth." The Vansfoda community leader for Saurashtra shared during a meetup. Saurashtra's Vansfoda community has realized the strength of uniting to overcome challenging issues the community is steeped in; as a result, they have decided to work collectively. 

A community gathering was organised at Rajkot's Tramba. Pratapbhaii Vansfoda had worked tirelessly to host the event, Balubhai came all the way from Palanpur. VSSM's Kanubhai and Chayabahen also worked tirelessly to plant the gathering. And by the end of the assembly, a formal community organization had come into being.

અમારે સંગઠીત થવું છે ને શિક્ષણ અને આર્થિક સદ્ધરતા માટે કોશીશ કરવી છે.

સૌરાષ્ટ્રના વાંસફોડા સમાજના આગેવાનોએ આ કહ્યું. 

જે સમાજ સંગઠિત છે તે પ્રગતિ સાધી શકે છે તે વાતને સૌરાષ્ટ્રના વાંસફોડા સમુદાય સમજ્યો ને એટલે એમણે સંગઠીત થવા કમર કસી.

રાજકોટના ત્રાંબામાં આ નિમિત્તે આગેવાનોનું સંમેલન યોજાયું. પ્રતાપભાઈ વાંસફોડાએ એ માટે ભારે જહેમત ઉઠાવી. બલુભાઈ છેક પાલનપુરથી આવ્યા. 

તો અમારા કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ, છાયાબહેને પણ બરાબર મહેનત કરી.

સંમેલનના અંતે સૌએ સરસ સંગઠનનું નિર્માણ કર્યું.

Once nomads, the Oads were skilled at working with mud. Their ancestral occupation was building mud houses. But, the skill has been rendered obsolete as we progressed to making houses out of steel and cement. These days the Oads work on brick kilns. I had an opportunity to participate in a community gathering they had organized at Pratij’s Ghadi village. It was raining heavily that day, yet Oad community leaders from Gujarat had made it a point to remain present at the event. The program was organized to brainstorm collective initiatives for the community’s welfare.

Young and aware ex-sarpanch of Punsari village Shri Himanshubhai Patel also attended the event. There were many discussions centered around the upliftment of the community. It was a well-planned event Rakeshbhai Oad, and young community members had organized. We also had an in-depth discussion on the various welfare schemes designed for the nomadic communities. The need of the hour is for these communities to unite and work for the development of their respective community.

ઓડ સમુદાય માટી કામ માટે પાવરધા. બાપીકો ધંધો માટીમાંથી ઘરો બાંધવાનો. પણ સમય જતા એ બધુ બંધ થયું. હવે ઘણા ઈંટોના ભઠ્ઠામાં કામ કરે.

આવા ઓડ સમુદાયના પ્રાંતિજના ઘઢીગામમાં યોજાયેલા સંમેલનમાં જવાનું થયું. ગુજરાત ભરમાંથી ઓડ સમુદાયના આગેવાનો આ કાર્યક્રમમાં સખત વરસાદ હતો છતાં હાજર રહ્યા. સમાજના વિકાસ માટે સૌ સાથે મળીને શું કરી શકે તેની ઘણી વાતો કાર્યક્રમમાં થઈ. 

પુંસરીગામના યુવા જાગૃત સરપંચ રહી ચુકેલા હિમાંશુભાઈ પટેલ પણ કાર્યક્રમમાં ઉપસ્થિત. સમાજ ઉપયોગી ઘણી વાતો કાર્યક્રમમાં થઈ. ઓડ સમાજના આગેવાન રાકેશભાઈ ઓડ અને અન્ય યુવાનોએ આ કાર્યક્રમનું સરસ આયોજન કર્યું. 

વિચરતી જાતિઓ માટે વિવિધ કલ્યાણકારી યોજનાઓની વાત કાર્યક્રમમાં ખાસ થઈ.. બસ સંગઠીત થઈ સમાજઉત્કર્ષ માટે સૌ મથે એ આજના સમયની જરૃરિયાત. કાર્યક્રમ આયોજીત કરનાર સૌને શુભેચ્છા...

Happiness is being instrumental in getting a daughter married, and we have experienced this happiness numerous times…

Vadia is a village with special identity and needs. It is desired and ideal for the daughters of this village to get married. VSSM has remained perseverant towards getting these daughters. married.  The organisation also offers interest free loans to families willing to set up independent business. Many of them have invested the loan amount in cattle rearing and farming while some have started their own business.

A significant number of children from Vadia are residing at VSSM operated hostels and receiving continued education. Quite a few of them have finished education and entered organised workforce.

This year we were blessed with the opportunity to marry 5 daughters of Vadia, we helped their families with wedding expenses and also contributed towards the trousseau. And following the tradition of north Gujarat, we also gift a buffalo to the daughter. It ensures financial independence of the newly married daughter at her marital home. To sum up, VSSM spends around Rs. 1.60 lacs in each wedding.

We have been able to gift buffalo to two of the five daughters we married off recently.  The remaining three will also receive the buffaloes soon. And while we had just married off five girls we received the news of sixth daughter getting married. We were indeed a happy bunch.

Vadia’s Rameshbhai and Babubhai have ensured the weddings were accomplished. Numerous families of Vadia are now  prioritising education and weddings of their daughters.

We wish the daughters of Vadia a very long and happy married life.

દીકરીઓના લગ્નમાં નિમિત્ત બનવું એનું સુખ ઘણુ મોટુ. 

વાડિયા એક જુદી ઓળખ ધરાવતું ગામ. ગામની દીકરીઓના લગ્ન થાય એ ઉત્તમ પરિસ્થિતિ. અમે 2012થી ગામની મહત્તમ દીકરીઓ પરણે તે દિશામાં પ્રયત્નો કરીએ. સાથે સાથે સ્વતંત્ર વ્યવસાય કરવા ઈચ્છતા પરિવારોને અમે લોન પણ આપીએ જેથી એ નવા વ્યવસાય કરી શકે. ઘણા લોકો લોન લઈને પશુપાલન અને ખેતી કરતા થયા છે તો કેટલાક નાનો મોટો વ્યવસાય પણ કરે છે. 

ગામના પરિવારોમાંથી કેટલાકના બાળકો અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણી રહ્યા છે ને એમાંના કેટલાક તો હવે પગભર પણ થયા છે.

આ વર્ષે અમે પાંચ દીકરીઓના લગ્ન કરવામાં નિમિત્ત બન્યા. લગ્નમાં દીકરીઓની જરૃરી ભેટ આપીયે. પરિવારને પણ લગ્નખર્ચ પહોંચી વળવા શક્ય મદદ કરીએ. સાથે અમારી ઉત્તર ગુજરાતની પરંપરા પ્રમાણે ધામેણું(ભેંસ) પણ આપીએ. જેથી દીકરીઓ પણ પગભર થઈ શકે. ટૂંકમા્ં એક દિકરીના લગ્નમાં 1.60 લાખની મદદ કરીએ. 

હમણાં ગામની પાંચ દીકરીઓના લગ્ન સંપન્ન થયા જેમાંથી બે દિકરીઓને ભેંસ આપી દીધી ને બાકી ત્રણ દિકરીઓને પણ નજીકના દીવસોમાં આપી દઈશું. 

પાંચ દિકરી પરણી ત્યાં એક બીજી દિકરીના લગ્નની પણ વાત આવી.. ચાલો રાજી થવાય એવું છે..

ગામના રમેશભાઈ અને બાબાભાઈ આ કાર્ય સંપન્ન થાય એમાં આગળ રહ્યા. ગામમાં ઘણા પરિવારો હવે પોતાની દીકરીઓને ભણાવી, લગ્નો કરાવી રહ્યા છે. 

બાકી લગ્નના બંધનમાં બંધાયેલા પાંચેય દિકરીઓને સુખી થાવની શુભેચ્છા..

આ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરનાર અમારા પ્રિયજન એવા  આદરણીય શ્રી ચંદ્રકાન્તભાઈ ગોગરી(આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશન), શ્રી ક્રિષ્ણકાંત અને ઈન્દિરા મહેતા, શ્રી રશ્મીનભાઈ સંઘવી, શ્રી અભય ભગત, શ્રી મીનાબહેન શાહ, શ્રી બી મંજુનાથજી, શ્રી ગીરીશ સાંઈવે, શ્રી અતુલ અંબાવત, શ્રી નિતીન સીંગાલા, શ્રી સરોર ચૌધરીના અમે આભારી છીએ.

“Hello, Ben I am calling from Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital. Deesa’s Virchandbhai has shared your reference with me, he asked me to call you and that you would help me!”

“Let me know how can I help you?”

“My husband’s eye has popped out, we took him to Palanpur hospital but the doctors there asked us to bring him to Ahmedabad Civil.”

A worried and anxious Manjuben from Patan called up to share her husband’s condition, from her talk we could comprehend that her husband is suffering from Mucormycosis.

This was in May, when the cases of mucormycosis were on the peak. It was difficult to procure injections to treat this deadly infection. I had asked them to remain in Civil and undertake the treatment.

All of a sudden, four days later, the thought of Manjuben crossed my mind. I called to inquire about Shantibhai’s her husband’s condition.

“He is not doing good, the condition of his eye has worsened. He is unable to open his one eye. I have vowed to not wear footwear until he recovers completely. I am afraid, what if he…”

I could sense that Manjuben was in tear at the other end, her voice choking. I asked her to have faith in God and send me her husband’s reports.

We showed the report to Dr. Dipenbhai and Dr. Sapanbhai who had already treated two of our patients. The recommended  immediate surgery.  But the issue was of injections. The doctors had 4 days’ worth of injection supply post which we would have to arrange ourselves.

We were in deep turmoil. What if we are unable to find more injections after withdrawing them from civil hospital.

For a moment I thought why did I call to inquire about his health. But then took it as an indication from Almighty. We moved Shantibhai from Civil hospital to another private hospital and an emergency operation was performed. Since Manjuben did not have enough financial resources we appealed for help to Chandrakant uncle who made some funds available. Apart from this the Raval community was also called for financial assistance. We had road blocks for injection but in the end everything fell into place.

“I want to meet you before leaving..” Manjuben called up after Shantibhai was discharged for the hospital after 21 days.

Next day the couple came to our office and showered lot of affection on us. VSSM’s Nitin had formed a bond with them as he remained by their side throughout the treatment.

“I want a picture of us together,” Manjuben posed next to me, with her hand behind my back just as friends would do!!

“Be grateful to the Almighty, and be ready to help anyone in need.” I told them as they kept thanking me for taking care of them.

Both agreed as they walked out of the office. I observed Manjuben had her footwear on, her faith us preserved…

 'હેલો બેન મુ અમદાવાદ સીવીલથી બોલું. ડીસાવાળા વિરચંદભઈએ તમારો નંબર આલ્યો. ઈમને કીધું કે બેન મદદ કરશે તે ઈમન ફોન કરજો..'

'શું મદદ જોઈએ?'

'માર જીગાન પપ્પાન ઓસ્યોમોં બળ્યું નોમય નઈ આવડતું પણ ડોળો આખો બાર આઈ જાય ઈમ હુજી ગ્યું હ્. પાલનપુર વતાડ્યું પણ ડોક્ટરે કીધુ ક અમદાવાદ સીવીલમાં લઈ જો તે..'

પાટણના મેત્રાણાના મંજુબહેને સેલફોન પર ચિંતાતુર આવજે આ કહ્યું. તેમના પતિને મ્યુકર માઈકોસીસ - કાળીફુગ થયાનો અમને ખ્યાલ આવ્યો.

મે મહિનાની આ વાત એ વખતે આ રોગના ઈન્જેકશનની ઘણી રામાયણ હતી એટલે સીવીલમાં રહીને સારવાર લેવા માટે મે એમને કહ્યું. 

એ પછી ચારેક દિવસ પછી મંજુબહેન અચનાક યાદ આવ્યા. એમના ધરવાળા શાંતીભાઈની તબીયત કેમ છે એ પુછવા મે ફોન કર્યો..

મંજુબહેને કહ્યું, 'નઈ હારુ બેન. એક ઓસ(આંખ) મોં રોગ થ્યો હ્. એ ઓખ હપ્પુજી નઈ ખુલતી. ઈમન હારુ ના થાય તો હુદી અડવોણા(ખુલ્લા) પગે રેવાની મોનતા મોની હ્. પણ મન બહુ બીક આવહ્. ઈમન કોક..'

મંજુબેનનો અવાજ ભીનો થઈ ગયો એ આગળ કશું બોલી ન શક્યા... મે એમને ભગવાન પર શ્રદ્ધા રાખવા કહ્યું ને શાંતીભાઈના રીપોર્ટ મંગાવ્યા.

કાળી ફુગના બે દર્દીઓની સારવાર અમે જેમની પાસે કરાવી હતી તે ડો. દીપેનભાઈ અને ડો.સપનભાઈને અમે રીપોર્ટ બતાવ્યા. એમણે તત્કાલ ઓપરેશન કરવા કહ્યું. પણ મુદ્દો ઈન્જેક્શનનો હતો. ડોક્ટરે કહ્યું ચાર દિવસના ઈન્જેકશન મારી પાસે છે પછીનું ગોઠવવું પડે. અમે ભારે મૂંઝવણમાં. સીવીલમાંથી એમને બહાર લઈ આવીએ પછી ઈન્જેક્શન ન મળે તો?

એક વખત તો સમાચાર પુછવા ફોન શું કામ કર્યો એવું પણ થયું પણ પછી ઈશ્વરનો જ સંકેત હોવાનું માની શાંતીભાઈને સીવીલમાંથી બહાર ખસેડ્યા ને તત્કાલ ઓપરેશન થયું. મંજુબહેન પાસે આર્થિક સગવડ નહીં અમારા આદરણીય ક્રિષ્ણકાંત અંકલને આ અંગે વાત કરીને એમણે એ માટે મદદ કરી. આ સિવાય રાવળ સમાજે પણ ઉઘરાણું કરીને મંજુબહેનને મદદ કરી. ખેર ઈન્જેકશન માટે થોડી તકલીફ થઈ પણ છેવટે બધુ ગોઠવાયું. 

હોસ્પીટલમાં 21 દિવસ રહ્યા પછી શાંતિભાઈને રજા આપી. મંજુબહેનનો ફોન આવ્યો, 'તમને મળીને જ ઓયથી હેડવું હ્'

બીજા દિવસે એ ઓફીસ પર આવ્યા ને ઘણો પ્રેમભાવ અમારા પર વર્ષાવ્યો. અમારો નિતીન શાંતીભાઈના ઓપરેશનથી લઈને હોસ્પીટલની દોડાદોડીમાં એમની સાથે રહેલો તે એ તો એમનો પોતિકો બની ગયેલો.

તમારી હારે ફોટો પડાબ્બો હ્ બેન એવું મંજુબહેને કહ્યું ને બહેનપણીની જેમ મારા ખભે હાથ મુકીને આમ સરસ ઊભા રહ્યા..બેઉ વારંવાર આભાર માનતા હતા. ત્યારે મે એમને કુદરતનો આભાર માનવા કહ્યું ને સમય આવે તમે પણ કોઈ વંચિતને મદદ કરજોનું ખાસ કહ્યું...શાંતીભાઈને મંજુબહેને હા પાડી ને એ બેઉએ વિદાય લીધી.. શાંતિભાઈની સાથે અમારા કેમ્પસમાંથી બહાર નીકળી રહેલા મંજુબહેનના પગ અડવાણા હતા. એમની તેમના શ્રદ્ધા ફળી હતી...

“Did you invite Ben to have lunch at our home?” Kokila’s husband inquired in their dialect.

“She will not eat at our place!” Kokila responded in the same dialect,  thinking that I do not understand it.

Both of them were quite after the response Kokila gave.

“Why, can’t I eat food cooked by you?” I asked Kokila.

“You understand our language?” Kokila was pleasantly surprised.

“Why wouldn’t I understand? Come serve me food. Today I am having my meal with you all!!”

The couple was delighted to hear me ask for food. “Ben is so different!!”

“I don’t know whether I am different, but I know for sure that I have tremendous affection for you all!”

I relished the meal of Rotla (millet flatbreads) and onion potato curry.

The Fulvadee families of Kankar always tell us that no one in the society cares for them and with the affection we shower all of us, Naranbhai, Ishwarbhai, I are unlike everyone else they interact with.

To be offered food is epitome of love and respect a family shows  and one should always be grateful towards their gesture. Why discriminate  on the basis of caste and class !!

'તે બેનને ખાવા ખાવા કીધું'

કોકીલા ને એના ઘરવાળા એ એમની બોલીમાં આ કહ્યું.

કોકીલા જાણે મને એમની બોલી નહિ સમજાય એટલે એણે એમની બોલીમાં જવાબ આપ્યો,

'બેન આપણા ઘેર ખાય નહિ...'

કોકીલા ના જવાબ પછી બેય પક્ષે ચૂપકી છવાઈ...

મેં કોકીલા ને કહ્યું, ' હું તારું રાંધેલું કેમ ખાઈ ન શકું?'

'અમારી વાત તમે હજમી ગ્યા?'

'કેમ નાં હજમુ?'

'લે હવે ખાવા આલ આજ તો અહીંયા જ ખાવું છે'

કોકીલા અને એના ઘરવાળા ના મોઢા પર આ સાંભળી હરખ છવાયો.. કોકિલાના ઘરવાળા એ કહ્યું, 'બેન બહુ નોખા છે...'

મેં કહ્યું, 'નોખાની તો મને નથી ખબર પણ મને તમારા માટે હેત ઘણું છે...'

બટેકા ડુંગળીનું શાક અને રોટલા ભાવથી હું જમી...

પિત્તળની તાંસળીમાં વર્ષો પછી જમી..

કાકર ફૂલવાદી પરિવારો કહે અમારી હારે સમાજના કોઈ આવું હેત ના રાખે પણ તમે, નારણભાઈ, ઈશ્વરભાઈ બધા બહુ નોખા છો..

કોઈ આપણને જમાડે એ ઘડી ધન્યતાની આમાં જાતિગત ભેદ કેમ રાખવો?

“Ben, whenever we are asked which village we belong to, we feel  embarrassed  to reveal that we belong to Vadia. Out village has always carried a bad image. And we want to change that image, wipe off that stigma. We are ready to work hard and with your support we want to change that image!!”

After our work in Vadia, such words seem like music to our ears. When the youth of the village is prepared to work towards change, one knows for sure that better times lie in the horizon.

In 1963, government had allotted 205 acres of land to the women of Vadia. The land was in such poor condition that the families could never work on it to make it productive. The administration tried giving farming incentives from time to time however, as the efforts were not continuous enough the desired results were never achieved.

Since 2005,  VSSM has been consistently working towards improving the ground realities in Vadia and our persistence has begun  paying off. Vadia, that was once arid and barren now looks lush with green farms all around. The families have also began taking interest free  loans from us to begin cattle farming and dairy.

Bhikhabhai obtained loan from VSSM to buy buffalos. He intends to have a large cattle shade. After hearing the inspiring story of Lalabhai Raval who has had a successful venture with cow rearing and dairy after taking interest free loan from VSSM Bhikhabhai also plans to replicate his model in Vadia with addition of cows to his cattle wealth.

“Ben anywhere we are,  the waiting cattle compels us to return home by 4 PM. We have to return on time for them, milk them and take the milk to the dairy. Our thoughts are now focused towards our cattle.” Mukesh shared with a smile on his face.

Once the youth of Vadia begins working to earn money the hard way  and the daughters continue to get married, no one from Vadia will face embarrassment to share the name of the village they belong to.

Yes, for sure we will be creating a Vadia of our dreams pretty soon.

'અમે કોઈ ગોમમાં જઈએ અન ગોમના કોઈ પુસ ક ચોના તો અમે કહી નઈ હકતા ક અમે ચોના સીએ. બેન ગોમની જે ખરાબ સાપ પડી હ ઈન ભૂંસવી હ.

તમે સાથ આલો અમે મેનત કરશું પણ હવ ગોમની સાપ બદલાવવી હ એ નક્કી.'

વાડિયાના ભીખાભાઈ અને મુકેશની વાત સાંભળી રાજી થવાયું.

ગામના યુવાનો કામ કરતા થાય તેનાથી રૃડુ શું હોઈ શકે?

વાડિયામાં રહેતી બહેનોને સરકારે 205 એકર જમીન 1963માં આપેલી પણ બાવળના જંગલથી ભરી પડેલી આ જમીન પર તેઓ કશું કરી નહોતા શક્યા. 

સરકારે વખતો વખત કોશીશ કરી પણ સતત પ્રયત્નો ના થતા ઈચ્છીત પરિણામ ના મળ્યું.

2005માં પહેલીવાર વાડિયા જવાનું થયું એ પછી VSSM દ્વારા થયેલા સતત પ્રયત્નોના કારણે નક્કર બદલાવ આવવા માંડ્યો છે.

એક વખતનું સુક્કુ ભઠ્ઠ વાડિયા આજે લીલુછમ દેખાવા માંડ્યું છે. લોકો ખેતી કરતા થયા છે અને ખેતીની જમીન હોવાના લીધે અમારી પાસેથી લોન લઈને લોકો પશુપાલન કરતા થયા છે.

ભીખાભાઈ એ VSSMની મદદથી ભેંસો ખરીદી છે. તેમની ઈચ્છા મોટો તબેલો કરવાની છે. 

ભેંસો લાવ્યા પણ સંસ્થામાંથી લોન લઈને બે પાંદડે થયેલા લાલાભાઈ રાવળને જોઈને તેમણે ગાયો લાવવાનું પણ નક્કી કર્યું છે.

મુકેશ હસતા હસતા કહે છે,

“Ben, by marrying off two of my daughters today and assigning one in your care, I have fulfilled my promise given to you. I have no worries. Even death  does not scare me now.”  Rameshbhai’s eyes welled up as he talked to me today at his daughter Krishna’s marriage ceremony.

Vadia, a village whose traditional occupation is absolutely unaccepted seldom treats its daughters with respect and care, but once the daughter is married or engaged she is never forced into the hellish traditional occupation of prostitution.

Rameshbhai had promised me to never force his daughters into prostitution when he first met me in 2005. I had the right to correct him because he considers me  his sister.

The pimps active in Vadia tried their level best to lure Rameshbhai into the trap, but he remained undeterred like a  rock. Both his kidneys failed, the medications pushed him to the brink of survival. VSSM’s Shardaben and his elder brother Bababhai worked tirelessly to bring him to Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital and get his kidney transplanted. Right now, he is on medication that is taken managed  by VSSM’s President Shri Madhavbhai  Ramanuj.

Apart from the physical trauma due to such life threatening ailment Rameshbhai also passed through severe mental trauma, but even under such dire circumstances he remained undeterred in his commitment to protect his daughters and ensured they get  married.

The ceremony wouldn’t have been possible without the support of VSSM’s largehearted family. The entire expense of the wedding ceremony was supported by respected Shri Morari Bapu. The kitchenware in the trousseau has been gifted by Shri Somabhai Patel. We have provided all that you can see in the pictures to Krishna and Kalpana. Apart from this,  to help them earn and live with dignity we have committed a buffalo each to both of them.

The Sarpanch of Khanpur Shri Nagjibhai has been assigned with the responsibility of finding a good buffalos. The costs of buffalo are very high currently hence, we plan to purchase them once the prices come down.

I am grateful to all those who stood with us and have wished well for Vadia.

Shardaben, our backbone for Vadia who constantly worries for the community needs to be commended for her untiring efforts in Vadia.

વાડિયા માં એકવાર ફેર ઢોલ ઢમક્યાં.....

'બેન મે આપેલું વચન આજે પૂરું કર્યું. મારી બે દીકરી પરણાવી અને એક તમને સોંપી. હવે હાલ મોત આવે તોય મને ચિંતા નથી '

વાડિયાના રમેશભાઈ સરાણિયાની આંખો આજે દીકરી ક્રિષ્ના ના લગન વખતે આ કહેતા કહેતા ભરાઈ આવી.

વાડિયા જ્યાની પરંપરા દીકરીઓ માટે ક્યારેક ના સ્વીકારાય એવી. દેહવ્યાપારના કલંક ગામની દીકરીઓના માથે લખાતા હોય એવા વાડિયામાં જે દીકરીની એક વખત લગ્ન કે સગાઈ થાય એ ક્યારેય આવા નર્કમાં ધકેલાતી નથી.

રમેશભાઈને ૨૦૦૫ માં મળેલી અને એ વખતે જ એમણે પોતાની દીકરીઓને આ નર્કાગાર માં નહિ ધકેલવાનું વચન આપેલું. મને બહેન માને એટલે થોડા વિશેષ અધિકાર ભાવ પણ બંને તરફ હોય... પણ છેવટે તો બધુંયે હકારાત્મક.

કેવી લાલચો સામે આવી પણ એ બધાને એમણે ઠોકર મારી.

બે કિડની બગડી. દવામાં ખૂબ ખર્ચ થયો. Vssm ના કાર્યકર શારદાબેન અને મોટાભાઈ બાબા ભાઈ સાથે રમેશભાઈ ને માંડ કિડની હોસ્પિટલ લાવ્યા અને કિડની ટ્રાન્સપ્લાન્ટ કરાવ્યું. હાલે દવા ચાલે પણ દવાનું બધું vssm ના પ્રમુખ માધવભાઇ રામાનુજ સાચવે. 

આર્થિક રીતે કમર તૂટી ગયેલી. ત્યારેય આવેલી લાલચોથી એ પર રહ્યા અને ખરા અર્થમાં એમણે દીકરીના બાપને છાજે એમ દીકરીઓને સંસાર મંડાવ્યા.

લગ્ન ખર્ચમાં સહયોગ પૂજ્ય મોરારી બાપુ એ આપ્યો. દીકરીને ભેટમાં વાસણ માટે સોમાભાઈ પટેલ સહયોગ આપ્યો. તેમનો આભાર વ્યક્ત કરું છું. દીકરી ક્રિષ્ના અને કલ્પનાને લગનમાં ફોટોમાં દેખાય છે એ સાધન સામગ્રી તો આપી. સાથે બેય દીકરીઓ સાસરીમાં સ્વમાનભેર જીવી શકે એ માટે બેયને ભેંસ આપવાનું વચન પણ આપ્યું.

ખાનપુરના સરપંચ નાગજી ભાઈને ભેંસ લાવવાની જવાબદારી સોંપી. હાલ ભેંસોની કિંમત વધારે છે ઓછી થતાં જ બેય દીકરીના ઘરે ભેંસ બંધાશે.

વાડિયા માં બદલાવ માટે મથતા સૌ સ્વજનો પાસે આજે રાજીપો વ્યક્ત કરું છું.

પૂજય બાપુ નો આભાર માનું છું એમની મદદ વગર આ બધું અસંભવ હતું...

અમારા કાર્યકર શારદાબેન સતત વાડિયા માં રહેતા માણસોની ચિંતા સેવે અને એમને મદદ કરે એમની લાગણી ને પ્રણામ.

અને રમેશભાઈ તમે ભાઈ તરીકે આપેલું વચન નિભાવ્યું એનો આનંદ.. સાથે વાડિયા ની તમામ દીકરીના બાપ તમારા જેવા થાય એવી આશા રાખું છું.

I was on my way to monitor the ongoing water management works at Rampura. En route to  Rampura falls Sutharnesdi, the thought of  Kaluba crossed our mind and we decided to stop at Sutharnesdi to meet her. The families of Sutharnesdi had struggled very hard to obtain the proofs of their existence, their citizenry documents. They were just three families but no-one seemed to  inclined to ensure they received those documents. VSSM’s Naran had worked on campaign mode to  ensure these families receive documentary proofs of their existence. Consequently, they received Voter ID cards and  Ration cards too. “We no longer wish to sing lullabies, please give us loan to help us start some new occupation,” they had requested. Eventually, we sanctioned Rs. 5000 each to help both the sons of Kaluba buy bicycle to start selling cosmetics and hair accessories.

Life is a little easier for them now. We have also filed their  applications for obtaining residential plots from government. The Bharthari never featured on the official list of nomadic and de-notified communities. As a result of VSSM’s extensive advocacy,  the government officials did consider and included Bharthari as well as numerous other communities we had suggested into the official list. This community can now expect to obtain plots and assistance from the government. It is pertinent that  now their life changes for better and these families are determined to make that happen.

“It is because of you we are able to stay here, you are well aware that Bhartharis aren’t blessed to lead such good life!!” Kaluba shared when we stopped to meet her.

It is an incredible feeling to learn  that our existence has brought so much peace and happiness into someone else’s life. Today, there are thousands of individual who feel the same as Kaluba. We are grateful to have been given this opportunity to be helpful to so many.

However, it is crucial that we spot for families like these and make concrete plans  to ensure they are given residential plots. We have presented these to the administration and are hopeful they will plan diligently.

રામપુરામાં થઈ રહેલા જળ વ્યવસ્થાપનના કામો જોવા જતી હતી અને વચમાં સુથારનેસડી આવ્યું. નારણે કાળુ બા ભરથરીને યાદ કર્યો અને અમે ત્યાં થંભ્યા.

પોતાની ઓળખનો આધાર મેળવવા આ પરિવારોએ ઘણો સંઘર્ષ કર્યો હતો. 

ત્રણ જ પરિવાર છતાં કોઈની એના પર નજર જ નહોતી પડી. 

કાર્યકર નારણે એમને નાગરિકત્વ અપાવાની ઝૂંબેશ હાથ ધરી ને મતદારકાર્ડના ફોર્મ ભરાયા. એ પછી તો રાશનકાર્ડ પણ થાય ને હવે રાવણહથ્થો લઈને હાલરડા નથી ગાવા તમે લોન આપો એવી વિનંતી સામે શૃંગારપ્રસાધનો, બોરીયા - બકલ વેચવા સાયકલ અને થોડો સામાન ખરીદવા 5000 -5000ની લોન કાળુ બાના બે દિકરાને આપી.

જીંદગી પહેલા કરતા સરળ થઈ છે. 

રહેવા કાયમી જમીન મળે એ માટે અરજી કરી છે. ભરથરીનો સમાવેશ વિચરતી જાતિની યાદીમાં નહોતો એટલે પ્લોટ મેળવા મુશ્કેલ જણાતા હતા પણ 2017માં VSSMના પ્રયત્નોથી ભરથરીનો સમાવેશ વિચરતી જાતિમાં થયો છે એટલે ઘર તો થવાના. હવે જીવન બહેતર થાય એ વધુ જરૃરી છે. એ માટે એમણે કમર કસી છે.

કાળુ બા મળ્યા અને એમણે કહ્યું, 'તમે બધા હોવને અમે અહીંયા રહી હકીએ બાકી અમારે આવુ રૃડૃ રહેવાનું શાને હોય?'

આપણા હોવાથી કોઈને સંતોષ થાય એ વાત જ અનેરી છે. આજે હજારો માણસો છે જેમની લાગણી કાળુ બા જેવી જ છે... 

કુદરતે નિમિત્ત બનાવ્યા અનો રાજીપો છે...

પણ હવે આવા પરિવારોને શોધીને તેમને રહેવા લાયક યોગ્ય જગ્યાઓ મળે તે અંગે સચોટ આયોજન થાય એ જરૃરી છે. 

વહીવટીતંત્રમાં રજૂઆતો કરી છે નક્કર થશે એવી આશા છે...

Personally, whenever I am  in midst of  some severe challenges while working for the nomads I come here, talk to you all and draw your support and encouragement  from the  comments you write.

Some 5 month back, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation bulldozed the shanties located near Sabarmati’s Eicher Depot. When the members of our team and communities went to complain about it they were put behind the bars.

The members from Devipujak, Bajaniya and Vansfoda communities and I along with the team members had gone to meet the Commissioner and  other responsible officials. The disappointing response from the officials had  shattered me.  I remember an anguished Kokilaben Devipujak, who resided in the felled settlement sharing, “Ben, we have to stay on footpath now. During the nights we have to remain on vigil, we have our young daughters to worry about. What if someone took them away in the middle of night?” Even a thought of such unsecured living conditions had given me shivers.

I was crying my heart out when respected Bhagwankaka Panchal, I was in no condition to talk. “Can’t talk right now Kaka,” I had told and Kaka understood it all.

After the incident the commissioner changed and Shri Vijay Nehra was appointed as new commissiner. Shri Nehra is an amazing individual. Kaka and I went to meet him and briefed him about the incident.

He expressed regret over the incident and instructed his officials to make arrangements to ensure these families obtain houses as soon as possible.

We compiled the required documents for 47 families. VSSM’s Madhuben also obtained the missing documents. We prepared the files of all these families and submitted them in the Commissioner’s office. On 6th March 2019,  32 of the 47 families were on the basis of a draw  allotted 1BHK houses in Ahmedabad’s  Chandkheda suburb.

Shri Jadav Saheb, Shri Kamleshbhai and other officials from Municipal Commissioner’s Office in Usmanpura poured their heart and worked really hard to ensure these families receive the best houses and ensured speedy issuance of all the missing documents. We cannot thank them enough. All these tasks were accomplished in very little time.  

These families needed to make a payment of their share  for which we contacted Vikasti Jati Kalyan Board. We got in touch with Shri Vanzara who supported us with the applications.

Honestly, the joy of these families receiving houses have surpassed the emotional turmoil I had experienced when their homes were destroyed by the municipal corporation. We are still awaiting houses for the remaining 15 families. Hopefully, that too shall happen soon.

Shri Vijay Nehra, we will always remain grateful to you, it was your generosity that transformed into homes for these families. Hope more and more government offices have officials like you at its realm.

Shri Vanzara Saheb is someone we trust as our own, can’t thank him enough.

Bhagwankaka is a wonderful individual, he holds tremendous  compassion for the poor. ‘Don’t feel so dismal, we will find a way out!!” he would always give such calming assurances while doing all he can to solve the situation. It is a pleasure to have Kaka besides us.

Also, the patience portrayed by the families living near Eicher Depot  is truly commendable.

VSSM’s Madhuben hails from one of the nomadic communities, very  sharp personality with a fightitng streak. At the same time she can be very timid and mellow. Her constant worry is the families she works for. It was her efforts that paid off at the end. We are glad she is part our zealous team.

વ્યક્તિગત રીતે વિચરતી જાતિઓ સાથેના કામોમાં કોઈ તકલીફ પડે ત્યારે આ પેજ પર લખતી હોવું છું ને તમે બધા એ વખતે સાથે હોવાનું અને નિરાશ નહીં થવાનું કહેતા હોવ છો..

લગભગ પાંચેક મહિના પહેલાં સાબરમતી એચર ડેપો પાસે રહેતા પરિવારોના છાપરાં મ્યુનીસીપલ કોર્પોરેશને તોડ્યા હતા. રજૂઆત માટે અમારા કાર્યકરો ને વસાહતના લોકો ગયા તો તેમને ઉપાડીને એ વખતે જેલમાં પુરી દીધેલા.

એ વખતના કમીશનર અને અધિકારીઓને મળવા અમે દેવીપૂજક, બજાણિયા તેમજ વાંસફોડા પરિવારના લોકો ગયા હતા. પણ અધિકારીના નિરાશાજનક જવાબથી માનસીક રીતે હું ભાંગી પડી હતી. વસાહતમાં રહેતા કોકીલાબહેન દેવીપૂજકે કહ્યું હતું, 'બેન સાવ ફૂટપાથ પર આવી ગયા છીએ. રાતના બહેન દીકરીઓની સુરક્ષા માટે જાગવાના અમે વારા કર્યા છે. સાવ ફૂટપાથ પર છીએ કોઈ મોંઢુ દબાવીને દીકરીને લઈ જાય તો...'

આવી અસુરક્ષીતતા વિચાર માત્રથી હૃદય દુઃખી થઈ ગયેલું.

ખુબ રડતી હતી એ વખતે જ આદરણીય ભગવાનકાકા પંચાલનો ફોન આવ્યો. વાત કરી શકુ એ હાલતમાં હું નહોતી. મે કહેલું કાક હાલ વાત નહીં કરી શકુ ... ને કાકા બધુ સમજી ગયા..

એ પછી કમીશનર બદલાયા ને નવા કમીશનર શ્રી વિજય નહેરા આવ્યા. શ્રી નહેરા અદભૂત માણસ. કાકા અને હું નહેરાસાહેબને મળ્યા. બધી વાત કરી.

એમણે તુરત જ આ આખી ઘટના પ્રત્યે દુઃખ વ્યક્ત કર્યું ને આ પરિવારોને ઝટ ઘર મળે એ માટે વહીવટીતંત્રને સૂચના આપી.

કુલ 47 પરિવારોના જોઈતા પુરાવા અમે ભેગા કર્યા. કેટલાક ખુટતા પુરાવા બનાવવાનું પણ VSSMના કાર્યકર મધુબહેને કર્યું.

આ બધુ તૈયાર કરીને કમીશનર ઓફીસ જમા કરાવ્યું ને તા.6 માર્ચ 2019ના રોજ 47માંથી 32 પરિવારોને ડ્રો દ્વારા એક બેડરૃમ,ડ્રાઈગરૃમ, રસોડા સાથેનું ઘર ચાંદખેડામાં આપવામાં આવ્યું.

મ્યુનીસીપલ કમીશનર કચેરી ઉષ્માનપુરાના અધિકારી શ્રી જાદવ સાહેબ, કમલેશભાઈ વગેરે અધિકારી ગણે ખુબ પ્રેમથી આ પરિવારોને સારામાં સારુ ઘર મળે તે માટે તજવીજ કરી ને જોઈતા તમામ પુરાવા એકઠા કરવામાં મદદ પણ કરી. તેમનો આભાર માનીએ એટલો ઓછો. તેમણે ખુબ ઓછા સમયમાં આ કામ પૂર્ણ કર્યું.

આ પરિવારોને મકાન મેળવવા પોતાનો હિસ્સો ભરવો પડે. આ હિસ્સો ભરવા અમેે વિકસતી જાતિ કલ્યાણ ખાતામાં રજૂઆત કરી. અને એ માટે સચીવ શ્રી વણઝારા સાહેબ મદદ કરી.

ટૂંકમાં કહુ તો જે માનસીક પરિતાપ આ પરિવારોના ઝૂંપડાં તૂટ્યા ત્યારે થયો હતો આજે અનેક ઘણી ખુશી આ પરિવારોને ઘર મળતા થઈ છે.

હજુ 15 પરિવારોને ઘર મળે તે માટે કોશીશ કરવાની છે અને એ પણ થશે એવી આશા છે.

આ તબક્કે કમીશનર શ્રી વિજય નહેરાનો આભાર માનવો ઘટે તેમના જેવી ઉદારતાના લીધે જ આ થઈ શક્યું. સાથે તમારા જેવા અધિકારીઓ દરેક જગ્યા પર હોય તેવું ઈચ્છીએ જેથી દરેક ગરીબને તેના હકનું મળે.

આદરણીય વણઝારા સાહેબનો આભાર માનીએ એટલો ઓછો...તેઓ તો અમારા પોતિકા છે.

જ્યારે ભગવાન કાકા સાવ નોખા માણસ. ગરીબો માટે ભારોભર અનુકંપા. દુઃખી ના થા રસ્તો નીકળશે તેવો હૈયાહરો પણ આપે ને કામ કરાવવામાં મદદ પણ કરે. કાકા તમે અમારી સાથે છો એનો આનંદ...

સાથે જ એચર ડેપો પાસે રહેતા વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારોની ધીરજને પણ દાદ દેવી પડે.

કાર્યકર મધુબહેન વિચરતીજાતિમાંના જ એક. બહુ બાહોશ, લડાકુ પણ મનથી રુજુ. શું થશે એવી સતત ચિંતા કરે અને દિવસ રાત જોયા વગર આ પરિવારો માટે મથ્યા કરે. તેમની મહેનત ફળી. મધુબહેન જેવા પાયાના કાર્યકરો અમારી સાથે છે એટલે જ આ બધુ થઈ શકે છે મધબહેન સાથે છો એનો આનંદ અને ખુબ પ્રેમ પણ....

છાપરાં તુટયાની પછીની રજૂઆત ને પોલીસ પકડીને લઈ ગઈ એ દુઃખદ દોર ફોટોમાં તથા ઘર આપવા માટેનો ડ્રો મ્યુનીસીપલ કમીશનર કચેરી ઉષ્માનપુરા દ્વારા કરવામાં આવ્યો તે વખતે ડ્રો દ્વારા ઘર ફાળવતા અધિકારી ગણ સાથે સંસ્થાની ટીમ આ બધુ જ કેમેરાની નજરે.. તમે પણ ખુશીમાં સહભાગી બનો માટે આ ઘડી તમારી સાથે વહેંચી..

“The  floods took along everything we owned, not even a spoon was spared. VSSM helped me through the extremely difficult times, you advised me to  give up the habit of eating gutka and transformed my life for better. There was a time I felt how will I ever overcome such hard times, how will I survive? But look at me now, I am capable of giving employment to 5-7 people!” This  statement always comes forth when we think about Umri’s Lalabhai Raval, a person who personifies hard work humility and generosity.

We have shared Lalabhai’s story earlier on how after the devastating floods of 2017, VSSM supported Lalabhai with an interest free loan and that combined with his vision Lalabhai rebuild his life from scratch.

Within a span of 1.5 years, Lalabhai now owns 55 cattle. He sells milk worth Rs. 1.5 lakhs and his life has changed only for better. His hard work and  compassion is further reflected in his generosity towards others. Lalabhai makes  a monthly donation of Rs. 2000 to VSSM so that more individuals like him can be helped.  He is now an inspiration to others.

Individuals like Lalabhai are a blessing to the society and their inspiring deeds should be honoured and  stories need to  be told to the society. 

On 25th March, 2019, in a program organised to honour and appriciate the individuals who have been part of the Swavlamban program,  we felicitated  Lalabhai with a congratulatory letter and cash of Rs. 5000. However, the person that he is Lalabhai added Rs. 500 to the amount and  returned the cash amount to VSSM.

As Lalabhai becomes a role model for Swavlamban beneficiaries, we received numerous calls fter the program, saying “we too want to be like Lalabhai!” May these wishes come true is what we hope.  

It is Kanubhai who introduced us to Lalabhai and  Naran who constantly thinks about these families.

#બનાસકાંઠાના ઉમરીમાં રહે, એમનું એક વાક્ય બરાબર યાદ રહે, 

'2017ના પુરમાં મારુ બધીયે તણાઈ ગયું. એક ચમચી પણ નહોતી બચી. પણ સંસ્થાની મદદ અને પડીકી ખાવાની આદત તમે કહીને મે છોડી એ પછી મારા જીવનમાં ઘણો સુધાર આવી ગયો. એક સમય હતો જ્યારે મને થતું તું કે હું શું કરીશ, કેવી રીતે જીવીશ અને અત્યારે હું પાંચ, સાત માણસોને કામ આપી શકુ એવી ક્ષમતા ધરાવું છું.'

લાલાભાઈની આખી વાત ફેસબુકના આ પેજ પર પહેલાં લખી છે એટલે વધુ વાત નથી કરતી. પણ સંસ્થામાંથી મળેલી લોને એમને હિંમત આપી ને પોતાની કોઠાસૂઝ તો હતી જ.

દોઢ જ વર્ષમાં લાલાભાઈ 55 નાના મોટા ઢોરનો માલીક બની ગયા. મહિને દોઢ લાખનું દૂધ ભરાવતા થઈ ગયા. 

જીવન સાવ બદલાઈ ગયું. આજે લાલાભાઈ બધા માટે ઉદાહરણરૃપ બની ગયા.

લાલાભાઈ સંસ્થાને માસીક રૃા.2000 ડોનેશન આપે.

આવા લાલાભાઈનું તા. 25 માર્ચના રોજ VSSMમાંથી લોન લઈને બે પાંદડે થયા હોય તેવા તેમજ સંસ્થાને નિયમિત ધર્માધુ એટલે કે અનુદાન આપતા હોય તે કેટેગરીમાં સન્માન કરવામાં આવ્યું. 

લાલાભાઈને અભીવાદન પત્રની સાથે રૃા. 5000 નો કેસ એવોર્ડ પણ આપવામાં આવ્યો. પણ લાલાભાઈએ એ કેસની રકમમાં બીજા 500 ઉમેરી સંસ્થાને પરત આપ્યા.

પેલું વિધાન મારાથીયે ગરીબને મદદ કરજોની વાત તેઓ બરાબર કહે છે.

આવા લાલાભાઈનો પુર પછી પરિચય કરાવનાર કનુભાઈ સંસ્થાના અચ્છા શુભેચ્છક..

કાર્યકર નારણની આ બધા પરિવારો માટે ચિંતા તો મોખરે...

લાલાભાઈ અત્યારે સંસ્થાના તમામ લોનધારકોના આદર્શ બન્યા છે.

Mittal Patel meets assistant collector of Rajkot distirct to
discuss long pending issues of NT-DNTs 

There is a difference between respecting someone and deeply respecting someone. Shri Jashwant Jegoda, Assistant Collector – Rajkot is someone whom we deeply respect.

We had the opportunity of experiencing the goodness of Shri. Jegoda whilst he was Assistant Collector of Siddhpur where he had worked tirelessly for the nomadic and de-notified tribes. Shri. Jegoda is an extremely  compassionate government official, always willing to give his 150% for the poor and marginalised.

His transfer to Saurashtra has been a blessing to us. The dust accumulated over the years on the pending files is now being dusted off. Jaswantbhai’s motto in life is to spread hope in the homes of poor and make the best use of the official powers  granted to him.

“Sir, officials like you are a boon to workers like us!! Your presence in the officialdom is like the lamp that lights up the darkness around. May you continue to move forward,  help the deprived and become instrumental in spreading joy in their lives. Our best wishes always will always surround  you.”

I had the privilege of meeting Jaswantbhai today to discuss some long pending cases with him. We talked a lot on the pressing issues these tribes face. I was delighted to have met an official like Jashwantbhai.

My God Bless You, Sir!! I am not sure if I can say this but just felt like saying so because of the tremendous respect we hold for you.

કોઈ માટે માન હોવું અને વિશેષ માન હોવું એ બંને માં ઘણો ફરક છે. જશવંત જેગોડા પ્રાંત અધિકારી રાજકોટ એમના પર વિશેષ આદરભાવ વ્યક્ત કરવાનું મન થાય.

વંચિતો માટે અપાર અનુકંપા ધરાવે અને મારાથી થઈ શકે તે બધું જ કરવા માટે હું તૈયાર એવો એમનો ભાવ હંમેશનો. આમ તો સિદ્ધપુરમાં એમનો અનુભવ થયેલો ત્યાં પણ પ્રાંત અધિકારી તરીકે એમણે વિચરતી વિમુક્ત જાતિઓ અને વંચિતો માટે અનુકંપા દાખવી ઘણા કામો કર્યા.

સૌરાષ્ટ્રમાં એમની બદલી એ અમારા માટે આશીર્વાદરૂપ છે. 

ફાઈલો પરની ધૂળ હવે ખંખેરાઈ છે. ગરીબ પરિવારોના જીવનમાં ઉજાસ પાથરવામાં હું કંઇ પણ કરી શકું તો જીવન અને અધિકારી બન્યાનું સાર્થક એવો ઉમદાભાવ જશવંતભાઈ માં જોવા મળે.

અમારા જેવા સેવકો માટે તમારા જેવા અધિકારીઓ આશીર્વાદરૂપ છે. જે અંધકારમાં દિવડા જેવા છે... 

ખૂબ આગળ વધો, તક વંચિતોના જીવનમાં ઉજાસ પાથરવામાં, દેશને નવા આયામ પર લઈ જવામાં નિમિત્ત બનો એવી શુભેચ્છાઓ...

આજે રાજકોટ જિલ્લાના વિચરતી વિમુક્ત જાતિઓની પડતર કામો માટે જસવંત ભાઈ ને મળ્યા.. ખૂબ વાતો કરી ને એક અચ્છા અધિકારીને મળ્યાનો રાજીપો થયો...

God bless you ... ખબર નહિ આ કહેવાય કે નહિ પણ તમને કહેવાનું મન થયું એટલે કહ્યું... પણ તમારી માટે આદરભાવ ખરા હ્રદયથી...
