Free Settlements...

How do such names come about sometimes? Hearing this name, the first thought is that it must refer to settlements of people living for free. And in a way, that's true.

In the country and around the world, there are many people whose situations are dire. Buying a house is impossible for them; even the thought of renting comes with challenges, so they start living in makeshift shelters or tents on government land.

However, among them, there are some shrewd individuals who, while making arrangements, keep the hope that if the government clears the land tomorrow, we might also get something, thus reserving their spots in these free settlements. But there are also many genuine people in real need.

Such free settlements exist in every city, big and small. Recently, I went to Bhavnagar, and there are over 500 families living in a free settlement there.

Some time ago, a notice was issued to vacate the area for all residents, causing widespread fear. There is a large population of the Kangsiya community in this free settlement. Many of them we have even given loans to for building homes, and we've also applied to the collector for permanent housing for them. Following their application, the process for allocating plots was initiated.

When we went to discuss whether they would be willing to relocate if plots were allocated by the government around villages near Bhavnagar, people from other communities also approached us. Communities like Bharwad and Suthar, who are also in a weak position, asked, "If we’ve lived here for years, why isn’t our situation being considered by the government alongside the Kangsiya community?"

The point was valid. We told them to also present their case. The government will certainly consider it.

It seemed more desirable that families living in the free settlement for years be allotted a designated plot of land. Yes, there will be verification to ensure that these people do not have any other address elsewhere.

From our experience, when such matters come to the government's attention and we present our case, the issues are viewed with sensitivity, and resettlement has occurred.

મફતિયુપરુ... 

ક્યારેક થાય આવા નામો કેવી રીતે પડતા હશે? આ નામ સાંભળીને પ્રથમ વિચાર મફતમાં રહેનાર લોકોની વસાહતનું નામ હશે એ આવે.. ને એક રીત વાત સાચી પણ..

દેશ અને દુનિયામાં અનેક લોકો એવા છે જેમની પરિસ્થિતિ ખરાબ. ઘર ખરીદવાનું તો એમના માટે અશક્ય, ક્યાંક ભાડાનું ઘર ખરીદવાનો વિચાર આવે પણ એમાંય પનો ટૂંકો પડે એટલે સરકારી જમીન પર છાપરા કે કાચી પાકી વ્યવસ્થા કરીને એમાં રહેવાનું શરૃ કરે.. 

જો કે આમાં કેટલાક માથાભારે માણસો પણ પોતાની વ્યવસ્થાઓ પેલું રૃમાલ મુકીએ તો કાલે સરકાર જગ્યા ખાલી કરાવે તો આપણને પણ કાંઈક મળે એ આશયથી મફતિયાપરામાં જગ્યા રોકે... પણ ઘણા ખરા લોકો એકદમ ખરેખર જરૂરિયાતવાળા..

આવા મફતિયાપરા નાના મોટા દરેક શહેરમાં હશે.. હમણાં ભાવનગરમાં ફુલસર જવાનું થયું ને ત્યાં પણ 500 થી વધારે પરિવારો મફતિયાપરામાં રહે..

થોડા સમય પહેલાં જગ્યા ખાલી કરવાની અહીં રહેતા તમામને નોટીસ મળી.. સૌ ભયભીત.. 

મફતિયાપરામાં કાંગસિયા સમુદાયની મોટી વસતિ. એમાંથી ઘણાને બે પાંદડે થવા અમે લોન પણ આપેલી ને એમને કાયમી જગ્યા મળે તે માટે કલેક્ટર શ્રીને અરજી પણ કરેલી.. તે એમની અરજી અન્વયે એમને પ્લોટ ફાળવવાની પ્રક્રિયા હાથ ધરાઈ.. સરકાર દ્વારા ભાવનગર આસપાસના ગામમાં રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફળવાય તો તમે રહેવા જશો કે કેમ તે અંગે વિગતે વાત કરવા જવાનું થયું ત્યારે અન્ય સમુદાયના લોકો  પણ અમારી પાસે આવ્યા. 

ભરવાડ, સુથાર વગેરે જેમની સ્થિતિ પણ નબળી.. એ લોકોએ કહ્યું, અમે પણ વર્ષોથી અહીંયા રહીએ તો કાંગસિયા સમુદાયની સાથે અમારો વિચાર સરકાર ન કરે?

વાત મુદ્દાની હતી. અમે કહ્યું, તમે પણ રજૂઆત કરો.. સરકાર ચોક્કસ વિચારશે...

મફતિયાપરામાં વર્ષોથી વસતા પરિવારોને નિયત ચો.મી.ની જગ્યા ત્યાં જ આપી દેવાય એ વધારે ઈચ્છનીય એવું એમની સાથેની વાત પરથી લાગ્યું..

હા ચકાસણી ચોક્કસ થાય કે એ લોકો પાસે અન્ય કોઈ જગ્યાએ પોતાનું સરનામુ નથી.. 

અમારા અનુભવે સરકારમાં અમે જ્યારે આવી બાબતો ધ્યાનમાં આવે ને રજૂઆત કરીયે ત્યારે સંવેદનાથી મુદ્દાઓ જોવાય છે ને પુનઃવસન પણ થયા છે..

ભાવનગરના મફતિયાપરામાં પણ લોકોને પસંદ આવે તેવો ઉકેલ આવે તેવું ઈચ્છીયે...

 “Ben, you set up a kiosk to retail fashion accessories. When you are  financially independent you will not require to stretch your hands before your husband.” The women of Kheda’s Sandhana shared this piece of advice with me.

They were 100% correct, and I liked them for their understanding.

Financial independence for women is needed in this time and age. Despite having the required skills, qualifications and understanding many women are unable to step out of their homes because their husbands would not want them to. But, financial independence is for one’s security. In case of an untoward situation, it is financial independence that will allow the women to face the challenges with respect and determination. They would not require to start from scratch. Education and economic independence thus become critical.

“Stretching hands before the husband even for 5 rupees is humiliating at times. If we are earning, we can spend our money wherever we want to...” Bharti tells me.

Women stepping not of the house to make a living might be a recent scenario for many communities, but the kangasiya women have led a financially independent life for generations.

“However our husband would be, we do not go complaining to our parents’, when we have our earnings there is no need to do so. When we are the earning members, do not mind tolerating the  husband!” Gauriben shared a very strong opinion.

While Gauri Ma remarked, “From an early age, we begin to groom our daughters on business skills. As a result, they are better prepared just in case they are faced with any crisis.

The kangasiya women are a truly empowered lot. So ideally,  each woman, whether she is a mother or  mother-in-law should provide space to their daughters and daughters-in law to secure financial independence. It is only then they would be able to face the world with their head held high.

" બેન તમે બોરિયા, બકલ ટૂંકમાં હોઝીયરીના સામાનની એક દુકાન કરી લો.. જાતે કમાતા હશો ને તો તમારે તમારા ઘરવાળા પાહેણ હાથ લાંબો નહીં કરવો પડે.. "

ખેડાના સંધાણામાં રહેતી કાંગસિયા બહેનોએ મને આ શીખ આપી..

મને એમની વાત ખુબ ગમી કારણ એ સો ટકા સાચી હતી..

દરેક સ્ત્રી પગભર થાય એ આજના સમયની જરૃર.  હું ઘણી એવી બહેનોને મળી છું જે ખુબ સરસ ભણી છે આવડત એનામાં ખુબ છે. કામ કરવાની ઈચ્છા છે છતાં ઘરવાળા ના પાડે છે માટે એ ઘર બહાર જઈ નથી શકતી.  કમાવવું- પોતાના પગ પર ઊભા રહેવું કોઈને બતાવવા માટે નહીં પણ ન કરે નારાયણ પણ ઘરમાં કોઈ મુસીબત આવી પડી કે એવા સંજોગો ઊભા થયા કે એને કમાવવું પડે ત્યારે વર્ષો પછી એકડ એકથી શરૃ કરવું ક્યારેક ઘણું મુશ્કેલ બની જતું હોય છે.. એટલે ખાસ થાય ભણીને પગભર થવું..

મને ભારતીબહેને તો કહ્યું." પાંચ પાંચ રૃપિયા માટે ઘરવાળા હામે હાથ લાંબો કરવો એના કરતા આપણે કમાતા હોઈયે તો એની હાડાબારી નહીં. આપણા પૈસા આપણને ગમે એમ વાપરીએ.. "

આપણા ત્યાં બહેનો છેલ્લા થોડા વર્ષોથી ઘર બહાર નીકળી કમાતી થઈ. પણ વિચરતી જાતિમાંના કાંગસિયા સમાજની બહેનો તો સદીઓથી કમાય છે.. 

ગૌરીબહેન કહે, "બેન અમારો ઘરવાળો ગમે એવો હોય અમે એની ફરિયાદ લઈને પિયર ન જઈએ.. એને અમે નભાઈ લઈએ.. આપણે કમાતા હોઈએ પછી વાંધો શું...."

કેવી ગજબ વાત... 

તો ગૌરી માએ કહ્યું, અમે નાનપણથી દીકરીઓને વેપાર કરતા શીખવીએ જેથી ગમે એવી વિપદા આવે એ પોતાનું કરી લે...

કાંગસિયા બહેનો સ્ત્રી સશક્તિકરણનું સાચુ ઉ.દા. લાગી..

બહેનોએ બહુ ભાવથી મને બંગડી પહેરાવી... આમ તો એમની આમાં માસ્ટરી.. જરાય દર્દ વગર એ બંગડી પહેરાવી શકે..

દરેક સ્ત્રી, દરેક મા અને સાસુ પોતાની દીકરીઓને વહુઓને પગભર થવા મોકળાશ આપે એ ઈચ્છનીય... તાકી એ દુનિયા સામે ખુદ્દારીથી ઊભી રહી શકે...

The Kangasiya families of Rajkot survive under conditions the shared images depict. When we first came in their contact, they possessed no identity proof. With the support VSSM provided and compassion, the officials showed they could acquire identity proof.

The pressing issue was to help them obtain residential plots. Our Prime Minister has pledged to provide housing to all by 2022.

 “Ben, when will we have a place to call our own, a place we will not ask to vacate?” the families invariably inquired whenever I visited them.

VSSM has helped file applications along with an appeal to the district collector of Rajkot with a request to expedite the allotment. We would also like to request the ever-supportive respected Chief Minister Shri Vijaybhai Rupani to kindly help us with this matter. 

રાજકોટના કુવાળવાગામમાં કાંગસિયા સમુદાયના પરિવારો ફોટોમાં દેખાય એ હાલમાં રહે.

આ પરિવારોને અમે પહેલીવાર મળ્યા ત્યારે એમની પાસે ઓળખના એકેય આધારો નહોતા. અમે મદદ કરી અધિકારીએ લાગણી રાખી એટલે આધારો તો થઈ ગયા.

હવે મુખ્ય મુદ્દો તેમને સ્થાયી રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ મળે તે. 

આપણા વડાપ્રધાન શ્રીનું સ્વપ્ન 2022 સુધીમાં ઘરવિહોણા પરિવારોને ઘર આપવાનું. 

જ્યારે પણ આ પરિવારોની વસાહતમાં જવું ત્યારે પુછાતો પ્રશ્ન બેન ક્યારે અમને અમારી જગ્યા મળશે જ્યાંથી અમને કોઈ ખાલી ન કરાવે. 

રાજકોટ કલેક્ટર શ્રીને પ્લોટ ફાળવવા અરજી તેમજ દરખાસ્ત કરી દીધી છે. બસ તેમને ઝટ પ્લોટ ફળવાય તે માટે વિનંતી... 

આદરણીય મુખ્યમંત્રીશ્રી વિજયભાઈ પણ અમારા કાર્યમાં ઘણી મદદ કરે તેમને પણ આ બાબતે મદદરૃપ થવા વિનંતી...

“Ben, by God’s grace we have enough. Please do not worry about us, give whatever is necessary for people who have nothing at all. The efforts you have poured in inculcating the  habit of saving and financial planning have come to our rescue during these times.”

Khodubhai Kangasiya resides in Rajkot.  The lockdown has forced everyone to stay put.  The daily wage-earning labourers have braced the worst effects of it, nomadic communities are a major chunk of this marginalised section of society. VSSM decided to distribute ration kits to the families it has been working for. During such trying times  Khedubhai tells us, “Ben, we are in a position to look after 300-350 individuals, don’t worry about us. We respect your feelings, appreciate the care you take of us. But we cannot live on charity!!” Khedubhai’s response felt like a ray of sunshine.

Kangasiya leaders Khedubhai, Ravjibhai, Jagmalbapa and many were given interest-free loans to expand their business. They kept taking small loans to improve their business after the previous one would be paid off. The families have improved their financial health as a result of the flourishing businesses. And it is not just economic well-being that has improved, they are at peace mentally as well. Otherwise which economically weaker section would refuse to accept charity during such trying times?

Khodubhai and Ravjibhai arranged meals for the economically weaker members of their community during the lockdown. They also gave Rs. 1000 especially for tea to those who needed it, as tea is an addiction for many. “Ben, even we cannot live without tea, how can they. Once things are ok again, they will return the money if and when they want to. We did our duty?”

Truth be told, it is hard to find leaders as wise and compassionate as these Kangasiya leaders. They send donations for the girls studying in the hostel. It is our privilege to be associated with leaders like Khodubhai, Ravjibhai. Our Pranams to all these wise men.

It is the hard-work of VSSM’s Kanubhai and Chayaben, who instilled in these communities financial discipline. They did teach well. Believe me, it is both good faith and joy to have such a hard-working team.

'બેન અમારી પાહે તો ભગવાને દીધેલું હાલ પુરતુ સે. એટલે અમારી ચિંતા તમે નો કરતા. તમે એવા લોકોને દેજો જેની પાહે કશું નથ. બચત અને આયોજન તમે શીખડાવેલું તે અટાણે કામ લાઈગું'

કોરોનાને કારણે લોકડાઉન થયું અને જે જ્યાં હતાં ત્યાં થંભી ગયા. રોજે રોજ લાવીને ખાવાવાળીની હાલત માઠી હતી. અમે રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. પણ ખોડુભાઈએ કહ્યું, 'અમે બીજા ત્રણસો સાડા ત્રણસો માણસોને હાચવી હકીએ એમ સીએ બેન હાલ અમારી ચિંતા નો કરતા. તમે લાગણી રાખો સો એ માટે ધન્યવાદ પણ આ ધર્માદુ ખાઈને પસી ક્યાં જવું?'ખોડુભાઈની વાત સાંભળી રાજી થવાયું.

ખોડુભાઈ, રવજીભાઈ, જગમાલબાપા વગેરે કાંગસિયા આગેવાનોને અમે તેમના વ્યવસાય વધારવા વગર વ્યાજે લોન આપેલી. એક લોન પૂરી કરી બીજી લે આમ એક પછી એક લોન લઈને આજે એ સુખી થયા છે.આમ તો ભૌતિક સુખ જ નહીં માનસીક સુખ પણ મેળવ્યું છે એટલે જ ધર્માદુ નો ખપે વાળી વાત તેમણે કહી.

લોકડાઉનમાં પોતાના સમાજના નબળા વર્ગના તમામ લોકોને જમવાની વ્યવસ્થા તો ખોડુભાઈ , રવજીભાઈ સૌએ કરી. સાથે બધાને 1000 રૃપિયા ચા પીવા ખાસ આપ્યા. બંધાણી હોય બેન આપણને ચા વીના નો હોરવે તો ઈને ક્યાંથી હોરવે. કાલ હારા વાના થાશે પસી એને દેવા હોય તો દેશે બાકી અમે તો દઈ દીધા..

કાંગસિયા સમાજના આ આગેવાનો જેવા આગેવાનોનો જોટો જડે એમ નથી..

સંસ્થામાં ભણતી દીકરીઓ હાટુ દર મહિને ધર્માદુ આપે છે..

ખોડુભાઈ, રવજીભાઈ જેવા આગેવાનો અમારી સાથે છે એનો આનંદ અને તમને સૌને પ્રણામ..

આ બધાને બચતના પાઠ અને ધર્માદાનું સાચુ જ્ઞાન VSSMના અમારા કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ અને છાયાબહેનનું.. આવા કર્મઠ કાર્યકરો આપણી પાસે હોવા એ પણ મોટુ સુખ છે..

VSSM receives and values contribution it receives from its compassionate and caring  patrons. However,  when donations are made by individuals of the communities it works for, the joy increases many folds. We recently experienced the same joy.

Rajkot’s RavjibhaiKangasiya  assists his wife with her business of selling scrunchies, combs, fancy hair accessories, cosmetics, imitation jewellery etc. She is one of the many women retailers you might have seen selling their stuff along  the roadsides, each item neatly lined-up on the floor-spread. The mobile-shops are set up  each day on the urban streets.

VSSM’s team members Kanubhai, Chayaben help them and other numerous families with the tasks relating to application with government offices and likes. Kanubhai had asked Ravjibhai to expand their business with some aid from VSSM’s interest free loan program.

“That would be great!!” Ravjibhai readily  welcomed the idea.

“What will you plan to do with the loaned amount?” Kanubhai inquired.

“Increase the items on our spread!” Ravjibhai replied.

“No, not on the spread. You have to plan a shop to sell these items on wholesale rates.” Kanubhai recommended.

“That is beyond my capacity. Who will buy from me?”

 “The members of your community!”

“No, no!!”

“There is no time for your “no-no”, you have to do it!!” Kanubhai insisted.

Khodhubhai, the Kangasiya community leader and others extended their support and a shop happened. Enough stock was stored in the shop. The amount of loan in rotation increased gradually. Today Ravjibhai stocks goods worth Rs. 2.5 lacs. The members of Kangasiya community buy goods from him and Ravjibhai sells it at rates that are lower than the wholesale prices. It is happy days for Ravjibhai now. He never forgets to send some amount as donation to the organisation. “Help those who are poorer than me with this amount!” he would say while handing us the amount. He also never forgets the girls studying at our hostel. “The socks for these girls during winters will be from me always,” he would say. This year he not only remembered the girls but offered to buy socks for the boys as well. Kanubhai curtailed him from doing so, Ravjibhai felt offended but all was well later.

It brings us immense pride and joy to see names of individuals from nomadic community feature on the list of our donors, Ravjibhai you contribution holds great value for us.

You are a real hero for us and we are grateful for your being part of our VSSM family.

નિષ્ઠા અને શુદ્ધભાવથી વંચિતોના કલ્યાણ અર્થે દાન દેવા સંસ્થામાં ઘણા આવે. સંસ્થામાં આવનાર આ બધાય અમારા માટે શીરમોર..

પણ આ બધામાં જેમના કલ્યાણ અર્થે કામ થાય છે તે સમાજમાંથી કોઈ આવીને શક્તિ એવી ભક્તિ કરે તો વધુ રાજી થવાય.આજે એવો જ પ્રસંગ બન્યો.

રાજકોટમાં રહેતા રવજીભાઈ કાંગસિયા. એમના પત્ની કાંસકી, બંગડી, બોરિયા, બકલ વેચવા રાજકોટ શહેરમાં પથારો પાથરીને બેસે. તમે પણ નાના શહેરોમાં પથારો પાથરીને શૃંગાર પ્રસાધનો વેચતી આ બહેનોને જોઈ હશે. રવજીભાઈના પત્ની આ બધુ વેચે અને રવજીભાઈ તેમને મદદ કરે.

અમારા કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ, છાયાબહેન આ પરિવારોને નાના મોટા સરકારી કામોમાં મદદ કરે. કનુભાઈએ એક વખત રવજીભાઈને સંસ્થામાંથી વગર વ્યાજે લોન લઈને ધંધો વધારવા કહ્યું.

રવજીભાઈએ પણ 'તો તો બહુ હારુ' એમ કરીને વાતને વધાવી લીધી. કનુભાઈએ પૂછ્યું,

'લોનની રકમથી શું કરશો?'

'પથારામાં સામાનનો વધારો કરીશ'

'ના પથારો નહીં. પણ શૃંગારપ્રસાધનો વેચવા હોલસેલની દુકાન

કરવાની'

'મારી એ કેપેસીટી નહીં અને સામાન લાવું તો પણ મારી પાહેથી લે કોણ?'

'આપણા સમાજના લોકો'

'ના ના..'

'નાનાના નહીં એ કરવાનું છે'

પછી તો કાંગસિયા સમાજના ખોડુભાઈ અને અન્ય આગેવાનોએ પણ હામ આપી. છેવટે દુકાન થઈ અને એમાં સામાન ભરાયો. લોનનું રોટેશન વધ્યું આજે લગભગ બે થી અઢી લાખનો સામાન એમની દુકાનમાં ભર્યો છે અને કાંગસિયા સમાજના ફેરિયા તેમની પાસેથી સામાન લે છે. તે બજાર કરતા થોડા ઓછાભાવે સામાન આપે. આમ હવે રવજીભાઈ બં પાંદડે થયા.

સંસ્થાને દર મહિને લોનના હપ્તા સાથે અનુદાન તો ભૂલ્યા વગર મારાથીયે ગરીબ કોઈને મદદ કરજોનું કહીને આપી જાય. સાથે શિયાળો આવતા હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા દીકરીઓને પગના માંજા તો યાદ કરીને મારા તરફથી જ એમ કહીને કનુભાઈ છાયાબહેનને બોલાવીને આપી દે. જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.

આ વખતે તો એમણે એકલી દીકરીઓને નહીં પણ આપણી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા દીકરાઓને પણ મોજા દેવાની વાત કરી. કનુભાઈએ એમના આ હરખને અટકાવ્યો. થોડા નારાજ થયા પણ પછી સમજ્યા.

રવજીભાઈ તમારુ આ અનુદાન અણમોલ છે..

દાતા તરીકે વિચરતી જાતિના એક વ્યક્તિનું નામ અમારા મેગેઝીનમાં છપાતું જોઈને રાજી થવાય..

“Kanu Saheb, can you please go through these documents to check if anything is missing?”

Mehboob Salat of Morbi’s Nava-Jambuliya appeared before us with a file containing the documents he wanted Kanubhai to review.

“Why don’t you check it for yourself, see if it has Aadhar card, ration card, voter id card, Ma card, caste and income certificates.” I replied.

“Arre, why don’t you read and confirm by yourself.”

“I have not gone to school,” Mehboob replied hesitantly.

“Oh! So where did you get this nice looking file from? Who taught you to file the documents in such an organised  way?”

“I have followed Kanu Saheb to Mamlatdar’s office many a times. I would see the  officials  carry documents in  files. I too had decided that on the day  I obtain my identity documents I too will  file them in a good file. When I received Voter ID card I went to a shop and bought back the best looking file from many the shopkeeper showed me.” Mehboob gave a generous smile after narrating this.

“Good, now that we have a file the documents will be preserved well,” I said taking the file from his hand. I found an unopened envelope while going through the documents in the file. I looked at the envelope, before anyone could say a word Mehboob spoke up, “Glad you took a look at it. The letter has been with us for such a  long time since,  Kanu Saheb had  not come to the settlement, it is yet to be opened!” Mehboob replied.

“So every letter you receive needs to be opened by Kanu Saheb?”

“ Of course, what would we do after opening it, we can hardly read or understand. So we await his arrival.”

“You set-out of  the settlement, people can read it for you anywhere you have gone so why just Kanu Saheb.”

“That is true but Kanusaheb makes it very easy for us to understand.”

Kanubhai and Chayaben are in charge of Morbi and Rajkot district. The communities hold tremendous respect for this empathetic duo. In fact the entire team of VSSM always remains eager to help the nomadic communities.  

Mehboob has immense affability towards his file, he was happy he too had a proper file like other individuals and officials to hold his important documents. So much so that he has preserved the postal documents well too.

'કનુસાહેબ આ મારા કાગરિયા જોઈ દ્યોને આમાં કાંઈ ખુટે સે...'

આવું કહીને હાથમાં ફાઈલ લઈને મોરબીના નવા જાંબુડિયામાં રહેતો મહેબુબ સલાટ અમારી સામે આવ્યો. મે કહ્યું,

'તુ જાતે જ જોઈ લેને આધારકાર્ડ, રેશનકાર્ડ, મતદારકાર્ડ, મા કાર્ડ, જાતિપ્રમાણપત્ર અને આવકનો દાખલો હોવો જોઈએ એમાંથી શું નથી?'

'મોટાબેન એવી કાંઈ અમને ખબર નો પડે. ઓ કનુભાઈ આ બેન કેસે એમાંથી કોઈ કાગરિયું આ ફાઈલમાં ખુટે સે..'

'અરે તુ વાંચને એમાં કનુભાઈને શું પુછવાનું?' થોડું શરમાઈને મહેબુબે કહ્યું, 'હું નેહાળ નથ ગ્યો'

'ઓહ'

'તો આટલી સરસ ફાઈલ ક્યાંથી લાવ્યો અને એમાં કાગળિયા મુકાય એવું કોણે સમજાવ્યું?'

'હું કનુસાહેબ હારે મામલતદાર કસેરીએ ગ્યો તો ન્યાં હંધા આવી ફાઈલો લઈને આવ'તા. ઈ ટાણે તો મારી પાહે કોઈ પુરાવા નહોતા. પણ તે દિવસે નક્કી કઈર્યું તું કે જે દાડે પુરાવા જડશે તે દાડે આવી ફાઈલમાં જ હુંએ બધુ ગોઠવીશ. તે મતદારકાર્ડ જઈડું પસી દુકાને જઈને મે કાગરિયા ભીડાવવાની ફાઈલ માંગી. દુકાનવાળાએ ઘણી ફાઈલો બતાવી પણ મે એમાંથી હારામાં હારી અને મોંધી ફાઈલ લીધી'

આટલું બોલી મેહબુબ એકદમ મસ્ત હસ્યો.ચાલો ફાઈલ આવી એટલે કાગળિયા સચવાશે એમ કહીને મે એની પાસેથી ફાઈલ માંગી. ફાઈલના પાના ફંફોસતા. એક કવર શીલબંધ પડેલું જોયું. મે કવરહાથમાં લીધુ અને મહેબુબને કશું પુછુ એ પહેલાં જ એણે કહ્યું,

'આ લો તમે હારુ કઈર્યુ. આ ટપાલ કે'દીની આઈવીતી. પણ કનુસાહેબ આઈવા નહોતા એટલે ટપાલ ખોલી નોતી'

'તે દરેક ટપાલ આવે તે કનુસાહેબ જ ખોલે?'

'હાસ્તો.. અમે ખોલીને હું કરીએ. સાહેબ જ વાંસે અને પસી અમને કે આમ કરવાનું કે તેમ કરવાનું..'

'પણ ટપાલ તો વસાહતમાંથી તમે જ્યાં કામે જતા હોય તેમને બતાવો તો એ લોકો પણ કહી દે કે આમાં શું લખ્યું છે?'

'હા માળુ એ વાતેય રાઈટસે. પણ બેન કનુભાઈ ખોલે તો હારુ એ બધુ ગેડ પાડીને હજમાવે..'

કનુભાઈ અને છાયાબહેન VSSMના મોરબી, રાજકોટ જિલ્લાના કાર્યકર. બંને માટે વસાહતના લોકોને બહુ માન અને બેય સદાય વંચિત પરિવારોના કામ માટે તત્પર. કનુભાઈ, છાયાબહેનની જેમ VSSMની આખી ટીમ એવી જ મજબૂત છે..

મહેબુબને ફાઈલ પ્રત્યે બહુ પ્રેમ હતો. ભણ્યો નથી પણ બધા સાહેબ રાખે એવી ફાઈલ એની પાસે છે એનો આનંદ એને છે વળી સૌથી અગત્યનું આ ફાઈલનો તેણે બરાબર ઉપયોગ કર્યો છે આ ઉપયોગ ત્યાં સુધી કે ટપાલના કવરો પણ એણે એટલી જ માવજતથી સાચવ્યા છે...

“There wasn’t a single object left which I wasn’t addicted to. 24X7 I would be under the influence of my addictions, lying in state of unconsciousness somewhere on the streets or by-lanes,” confessed Jeevabhai Marwadi Devipujak of Rajkot.

“I consumed so much alcohol through the entire day that I was never in my senses. I would never go to work, fight as much in the house but never thought of giving up alcohol,” was Tankara’s Hirabhai Kangasiya’s   honest confession.

“I ate 20-25 packs of masala a day!” said Devabhai Kangasiya of Neknama, while Kherdi’s Kalubhai said, “Ben, Every month  I would eat up pan-masala equivalent to the amount you give in loan!”

Addiction is such a compelling habit that it is difficult to make people understand and convince to give it up. It requires strong willpower on part of the addict to give up a habit that is easy to pick up but challenging to stay away from. However, our Kanubhai and  Chayaben have decided to make sure the nomadic families  they work with give up their deadly addictions and begin to lead healthier life. “We will drink water at your place only after you give up addictions, your loan applications will be approved after you have said goodbye to your addictions...” are some of the sweet threats they give to these families. And people have given up their habits!!

Recently, at a program to handover cheques under the Swavlamban program, we also felicitated  4 individuals who had given up their addictions with a letter of appreciation. After a brief talk on the hazards of the objects these communities are addicted it came as a surprise when 20 individuals decided to pledge for giving up addictions. We also gave them letters honouring their pledge that they have decided to frame and mount in their homes as a reminder to their pledge.

“I knew that my habit of massaging snuff was not good for my health but never felt like giving it up. Had someone had explained it to us earlier I would have given it up earlier,” said Tejiben.  How can you give up your addiction at such later stage in life? I asked. “Ben, I cannot turn back on promise I made to you!!”

Such impossible looking tasks made possible out of  love and respect these families share for us. Am so grateful for the love they shower on me. I would be so happy if these individuals accomplish their pledge of leading an addiction free life.

કોઈ વસ્તુની લત લાગે પછી એ લત છોડવી મુશ્કેલ. એમાંય વ્યસન મૂકવા તો ભારે મનોબળ જોઈએ. જેટલું ઝડપથી આપણે એને આપણી અંદર વળગાળી એ એટલું ઝડપથી એ છૂટે નહિ..

રાજકોટના જીવાભાઇ #મારવાડી_દેવીપૂજક કહે, બેન એવો એકેય નશો બાકી નહીં હોય જે મે કર્યો ના હોય. ચોવીસ કલાક એમાં જ રત રહીને ભાનવનાનો હું રસ્તા વચાળે પડ્યો રેતો. તો ટંકારામાં રહેતા હીરાભાઈ #કાંગસિયા કહે, હું ચોવીસે કલાક દારૂના નશા માં પડ્યો રેતો. કંઇ કામ ધંધો ના કરું. ઘરમાં ઝગડા થાય પણ દારૂ એમ કંઇ છૂટે? દિવસના વીસ પચીસ માવા તો મારે જોઈએ એવું નેકનામના દેવાભાઇ કાંગસિયા એ કહ્યું. તો જામનગરના ખરેડી ના કાળુભાઇ કહે, બેન તમે લોન આપો એટલાં ના તો હું મહિને દોઢ મહિને માવા ખાઈ જાવું...

આવા બંધાણીઓ ને વ્યસન મૂકવા કહી તો દઈએ પણ પાલન કેટલું થાય એ કહી ના શકાય. પણ અમારા કનુભાઈ, છાયાબેને આ બધામાંથી આ પરિવારોને મુક્ત કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. તમારા ઘરનું પાણી તમે વ્યસન મૂકશો તો જ પીશું, લોન પણ તો જ આપીશું. આવી મીઠી લાગણીથી માણસને બાંધે ને વ્યસન મુકાઇ જાય.

ટંકારામાં #વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારોને #VSSM દ્વારા આપવામાં આવેલી લોનના ચેક વિતરણ કાર્યક્રમમાં વ્યસન મૂકનાર ચાર વ્યક્તિઓને સન્માનવાનો કાર્યક્રમ રાખ્યો હતો. જેમાં વ્યસન મૂકનાર ચાર વ્યક્તિઓને પ્રસસ્તી પત્ર આપવામાં આવ્યા વ્યસનથી થતી ખરાબી વિશે થોડી વાત કરી તો આનંદ સાથે આશ્ચર્ય પણ થયું એકસાથે ૨૦ લોકો વ્યસન મૂકવા માટે તૈયાર થયા. અમે એમને સનમાન પત્ર આપ્યા. એમણે આ પત્રને ઘરમાં ફ્રેમમાં મઢાવીને મુકીશું એમ કહ્યું.

વ્યસનથી થતા નુકશાન વિશે ખબર તો હતી પણ સાચું કહું છૂટતું નહોતું. તમે ગેડ પાડી એવી કોઈએ પાડી હોત તો વહેલા છૂટી ગયું હોત. તેજીબેને વર્ષોની બજર ઘસવાની ટેવ મૂકી એમ કહ્યું ત્યારે નવાઈ લાગી. પાછલી ઉમ્મર વર્ષોનો બંધાણ એમ કંઇ છૂટે? એક ફેરા બેન તમને કહ્યું પછી પાછા નો ફરાય...

કેવા અશક્ય લગતા કામો થઈ રહ્યા છે. આભાર માનીશ આ પરિવારોનો જે આવો મીઠો સ્નેહ કરે છે.જેમની સાથે કામ કરું છું એમને વ્યસન મુક્ત કરાવવાનો સંકલ્પ સિધ્ધ થાય તો રાજી... ફોટોમાં જેમને વ્યસન મુકયા એવા વ્યક્તિઓને સન્માનવાનું થયું તે જોઈ શકાય છે.

The idea of illumination in someone's house is a matter of fortune. People from the Nomadic & De-notified communities usually stay in kachcha houses. In the evening, if they have food grains they have to prepare dinner by 5-00 p.m., since they don’t have electricity facility.  Many don’t even have ration card, they cannot purchase kerosene to light the lamp. In the night, many times, when they go to relieve themselves, they come across snakes, scorpion etc. Only they can tell you what is sheer darkness. Nomadic communities were friendly with dark nights but they too had dream of having electricity/light in their houses. But all this was not possible.

Shri Maharishibhai, Rituben from Mumbai were much concerned about the condition of Nomadic communities. What should be done? They met their friends and they mutually decided to donate Solar lights among nomads. They donated solar lights to 100 families of Kangsiya, Devipujak, Gadaliya, Bavri, Vansforda communities staying in Kuvadva, Sat-Hanuman, Tankara, Hadbatiyali of Rajkot.  Shri Maharshibhai explained to them about how to use solar lights. 

Solar light costing Rs.800/- was not taken by those families for free but they paid Rs.100 each accordingly to their capacity.

Shri Maharshibhai donated Solar lights to nomadic families

કોઈના ઘરમાં અજવાળું કરવાનો વિચાર આવે એ ઘડી ધનભાગ જેવી. વિચરતી વિમુક્ત જાતિઓ છાપરામાં રહે. સાંજે 5 વાગે ઘરમાં અનાજ પડ્યું હોય તો લાઇટ ના હોવાના લીધે જમવાનું બનાવી લેવાનું. કેટલાક પાસે તો રેશનકાર્ડ પણ નથી એટલે ઘાસતેલેય નથી જેને બાળીને દીવો કરી શકાય. રાતમાં એકી પાણી માટે જવાનું થાય ને ઘણી વખત એરું, સાપ, વીંછીનો ભેટોય થાય.

ઘોર અંધારું કોને કહેવાય એ આ લોકોને પૂછો તો ખ્યાલ આવે. આવા અંધારા સાથે વિચરતી જાતિઓએ કમનેય દોસ્તી કરી પણ અંદરથી ઝુંપડા વીજળીકરણ યોજનાની મદદની ઝંખના ખરી. પણ એ બધું કઈં થયું નહિ...

મુંબઈમાં રહેતા મહર્ષિભાઈ, ઋતુબેનને વિચરતી

જાતિઓની સ્થિતિનો ખ્યાલ આવ્યો. જીવ બળ્યો. શું કરવું એ વિચારી એમણે એમના મિત્રોએ ભેગા થઇને સોલાર લાઈટ આપવાનું નક્કી કર્યું.

રાજકોટના કુવાડવા, સાતહનુમાન, ટંકારા, હળબટીયાળીમાં રહેતા 100 જેટલા કાંગસિયા, દેવીપૂજક, ગાડલીયા, બાવરી, વાંસફોડા વગેરે સમુદાયના પરિવારોને સોલાર લાઈટ આપી સાથે મહર્ષિભાઈએ આ લાઈટ કેમ વાપરવી એ પણ સમજાવ્યું...

મૂળ 800 ની કિંમતની લાઈટ મફત નથી લેવી એમ કહીને પોતાની શક્તિ પ્રમાણે 100 રૂપિયાની કિંમત પણ પરિવારોએ આપી.

આભાર મહર્ષિભાઈ, ઋતુબેન અને સ્પર્શ ફાઉન્ડેશન તમારી લાગણી આ સમુહ માટે ના હોત તો આ શક્ય નહોતું.

વિચરતી જાતિઓનો આભાર ખાસ માનીશ મૂળ તો મફતનું ના લેવાનું ભાવના જાગી એ માટે.

વસાહતમાં આ બધું જેમનાથી શક્ય બન્યું એવા કનુભાઈ અને છાયાબેનને ખુબ પ્રેમ.. તમારા જેવા સંનિષ્ઠ કાર્યકર સાથે હોવાના કારણે આ બધુંયે કામ થઇ શકે છે.
