Fabrication is my passion…..

Babubhai Bajaniya is a resident of Detroj village of Ahmedabad District. He makes a daily commute to Kadi town to work in a fabrication workshop as a skilled workman. The everyday commute and indefinite working hours took a toll on his health. He was advised to stay home and take adequate bed rest. The bed rest of 4 months made him jobless as well. With no other job on hand he began working on daily basis as fitter for tin shades. It was not a fixed job and working as a fabricator all his life, he was too good at it so this was not  something he enjoyed  doing. He loved his earlier job. Fed up with the uncertainties of searching of work everyday he decided to set up his own fabrication unit. But how to go about it,  an enterprise requires funds?? This ain’t some kind of work that could be done on a road side!!  Such a unit requires a proper shop, three phase power supply! What to do was the big question he faced. 

Detroj was soon going to be a town place and people knew Babubhai well, they wished he start a workshop in Detroj itself. If a fabrication workshop came up in Detroj it  had  the potential of doing good business.  The only issue was of the start up capital. Babubhai  a dedicated community leader,  is an active VSSM volunteer, always present when needed. He shared his concern to VSSM’s Jayantibhai, asking him to inquire if any bank would loan him some funds. Jayantibhai conveyed to him that VSSM will support his endeavour,  asked him to go ahead with his plan.  

Babubhai eyed a shop situated on the outskirts of Detroj on the Ahmedabad-Bechraji road. Babubhai approached Kantubha Jhala the owner of the shop with the proposal to rent it. 

‘How much is the investment?’ inquired Kantubha.

’30,000’  Babubhai replied. 

‘ Would that be enough? Fabrication unit requires lot more!! continued Kantubha.

‘Yes, I know. I do not have funds, organisation is helping be with Rs. 25,000 the rest 5,000 I shall manage.’ said Babubhai

‘ Partner with me, I shall invest some money, I already have a shop.’ proposed Kantubha.

Babubhai was quick to accept the proposal. It was decided that the rent will go Kantubha, Babubhai will take Rs. 9000, the salary of a skilled worker and the profit shall be equally shared between both.

Today Babubhai, apart from the monthly fixed salary of Rs. 9,000 takes home Rs 10,000 to 12,000 a month. 

He also supports the other nomadic family who are in need of small loans. ‘I am unable to give my  time but since I earn well the  least I can do is give money. Its my responsibility  towards others.'

જીવ તો વેલ્ડીંગના કામમાં જ..

બાબુભાઈ બજાણિયા અમદાવાદ જીલ્લાના દેત્રોજગામમાં રહે અને કડીમાં વેલ્ડીંગની દુકાનમાં કારીગર તરીકે કામ કરવાં જાય. રોજ દેત્રોજ થી કડી અપડાઉન અને વળી જવાનો સમય નક્કી હોય પણ આવવાનો નક્કી નહિ. તબિયત બગડી. ચાર મહિના પથારીમાં રહેવું પડ્યું એટલે નોકરી પણ છૂટી ગઈ. છેવટે પતરાં ફીટ કરવાનું કામ શરુ કર્યું. પણ આ કામ કાયમી મળે જ એવું નહીં. વળી જીવ તો વેલ્ડીંગના કામમાં જ. વર્ષોથી એ કર્યું હતું એટલે એ વધારે ગમતું પણ.

વેલ્ડીંગનો સ્વત્રંત વ્યવસાય કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. પણ એ માટે નાણા જોઈએ. વળી આ કંઈ રોડ પર છાપરું નાખીને શરુ કરી શકાય એવું કામ નહિ. દુકાન જોઈએ. થ્રી ફેઝ લાઈટનું જોડાણ પણ જોઈએ. શું કરવું? ગામમાં રહેતાં લોકો એમના કામને જાણે વળી દેત્રોજ પણ હવે તાલુકો બન્યો છે એટલે દેત્રોજમાં જ વેલ્ડીંગની દુકાન થાય તો ઘણો લાભ થાય એમ હતું. પણ પૈસાની વ્યવસ્થા કયાંથી કરવી? બાબુભાઈ vssmના કામને ખુબ સારી રીતે જાણે અને જરૂર પડે સાથે આવીને ઉભા પણ રહે. ટૂંકમાં અમારા સક્રિય આગેવાન. એમણે પોતાની મૂંઝવણ vssmના કાર્યકર જયંતીભાઈને કરી અને કોઈ બેંક લોન આપે તો અપાવવામાં મદદરૂપ થવાં વાત કરી. જયંતીભાઈએ એમને vssm માંથી લોન મળશે એમ કહ્યું અને ધંધા સંદર્ભે તમામ આયોજન કરવાં પણ કહ્યું. 

દેત્રોજમાં જ અમદાવાદ બેચરાજી રોડ પર જેમની દુકાનો હતી એવા કાન્તુભા ઝાલાને ભાડેથી દુકાન આપવા બાબુભાઈએ વાત કરી. કાન્તુભાએ બાબુભાઇને પૂછ્યું કે, ‘કેટલાનું

રોકાણ કરવાનું છે?’ ‘રૂ.૩૦,૦૦૦નું.’

‘વેલ્ડીંગમાં તો ઘણું થઇ શકે?

‘હા પણ મારી પાસે મૂડી નથી સંસ્થા મને રૂ.૨૫,૦૦૦ ની લોન આપશે અને રૂ.૫૦૦૦ હું કાઢીશ.’

‘મારી સાથે ભાગીદારી કર. હું થોડું રોકાણ કરું. દુકાન તો મારી પાસે છે જ’

બાબુભાઈ એ આ વાતને વધાવી લીધી. કારીગર તરીકે એમને રૂ.૯,૦૦૦ નો પગાર, દુકાનનું નક્કી ભાડું કાન્તુભા લે અને નફો થાય એ અડધો અડધો. એમ નક્કી કર્યું. 

હાલમાં રૂ.૯,૦૦૦ ના પગાર સિવાય એવરેજ મહીને રૂ.૧૦,૦૦૦ થી રૂ.૧૨,૦૦૦ બાબુભાઈ કમાઈ લે છે. 

વિચરતી જાતિના કોઈ પણ કામમાં નાની આર્થિક મદદ પણ એ કરે છે.. એ કહે છે, ‘હું સમય નથી આપી શકતો પણ પૈસા કમાઉ છું એટલે મારી શક્તિ પ્રમાણે મદદરુપ થઈશ અને એ મારી ફરજ પણ છે’

We hope..

On 19th January 2015 we had a meeting with the Chief Minister Respected Smti. Anandiben Patel, to discuss issues pertaining to the Nomadic tribes. No introductions were necessary as she is aware about the activities of VSSM. The application made by us on the concerns relating to the nomads was immediately sent to ‘ Department of Social Justice and Empowerment’ with ta note to call for a meeting ASAP to resolve the long standing issues. 

A meetig has been called to discuss the various issues affecting the nomadic tribes on 12th February 2015 which will be presided by the Additional Chief Secretary Shri Dagur -Department of Social Justice and Empowerment. We hope it turns out to be a fruitful meeting. 

Smt. Anandiben Patel had remained present during the Ramkatha by Shri Morari Bapui. She was then the Revenue Minster of Gujarat, it was under her leadership that the  resolution of allotting residential land to the nomadic families was issued. We are deeply grateful for her concern and sensitivity towards these communities.

શુભ થશે એવી આશા..

૧૯ જાન્યુઆરી ૨૦૧૫ના રોજ વિચરતી જાતિના પ્રશ્નો સંદર્ભે મુખ્યમંત્રી આદરણીય શ્રી આનંદીબહેન પટેલને મળવાનું થયું. આમ તો તેઓ વિચરતી જાતિના આપણા કામને ખુબ સારી રીતે જાણે એટલે વધારે કશું કહેવાનું નહોતું. એમને આપેલી રજૂઆત એમણે ‘સામાજિક ન્યાય અને અધિકારીતા વિભાગ’ને મોકલાવી આપી અને આ પ્રશ્નોનું સમાધાન સત્વરે થાય એ માટે ઝડપથી બેઠક ગોઠવવા બાબતે પણ લખ્યું.

તા.૧૨ ફેબ્રુઆરી ૨૦૧૫ના રોજ વિચરતી જાતિના પ્રશ્નો સંદર્ભે ‘સામાજિક ન્યાય અને અધિકારીતા વિભાગ’ના અધિક મુખ્ય સચિવ શ્રી ડાગુરસાહેબે એમના અધ્યક્ષપણા હેઠળ વિચરતી જાતિને સ્પર્શતા તમામ મુદ્દા પર બેઠકનું આયોજન કર્યું છે. શુભ થશે એવી આશા પણ છે.. 

વિચરતી જાતિ માટે પૂજય મોરારી બાપુએ vssmને આપલી રામકથામાં આદરણીય આનંદીબહેન ઉપસ્થિત રહ્યા. તે વખતે મહેસુલ ખાતું તેઓ સંભાળતા અને વિમુક્ત જાતિને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફાળવવાનો ઠરાવ કરવામાં તેઓ નિમિત પણ બન્યાં. તેમની આ સમુદાય પ્રત્યેની લાગણી માટે એમનો હ્રદય પૂર્વક આભાર વ્યક્ત કરીએ છીએ.. રામકથા વખતે વિચરતી જાતિને સંબોધતા શ્રી આનંદીબહેન..(ફાઈલ તસવીર)

I want to provide good education to my daughter, wish to start a saree shop now…….

Since the last few years  VSSM has been actively working with he nomadic communities of Kamod village in Ahmedabad’s Daskroi block. Sharmilaben and her husband live in Kamod along with their small daughter. The husband works in a factory but their economic condition quite poor. It is difficult to run the household and give their daughter decent education with just the husband’s earnings. What to do, how to increase the family income?? Sharmilaben spoke to Ilaben, VSSM’s team member in Kamod. She asked her if VSSM can loan her some money to start a small venture. Since Sharmilaben did not being to a nomadic community Ilaben refused her right away. A rather dejected Sharmilaben remained persistent in her request.' Why can’t you give us, we are poor and needy, we will be repaying the money  soon, trust me……’ she kept insisting. Finally Ilaben brought her to VSSM office for a meeting. 

Sharmilaben Jiteshbhai Vasava dreams of educating her daughter well. To realize her dream she needs to earn aswell and share her husband’s responsibility of earning.

We gave her the loan. Its been five months ands has already repaid Rs. 5000. When the daughter goes to school she sets out to sell sarees in neighbouring villages of Piranha, Oad, Saijpur, Piplaj……she has also acquired the skills of selling sprees and makes good profit. 

‘How’s business ?’ we asked.

‘I earn as much as my husband now..’ she replied with a smile. 

Sharmilaben now wants to start a saree shop. She plans to repay the entire loan in one go and take another loan of bigger value. We are glad that its turning out to be good for her…..

દીકરીને સારું ભણાવવી છે - હવે દુકાન કરવી છે....!

દસ્ક્રોઈ તાલુકાના કમોડ ગામમાં વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારો સાથેના આપણા કામને ગામના સૌ હવે જાણે. ગામમાં શર્મીલાબહેન પણ રહે. આર્થિક હાલત ખરાબ. પતિ ફેકટરીમાં કામ કરે અને શર્મીલાબહેન નાની દીકરી સાથે ઘર સંભાળે. પણ પતિની કમાણીમાંથી દીકરીને સારું શિક્ષણ અને ઘર ચલાવવું શક્ય નહોતું. શું કરવું? કમોડમાં કામ કરતાં vssmના કાર્યકર ઇલાબહેનને શર્મીલાબહેન જાણે.  એટલે એમને મળી vssm માંથી વ્યવસાય માટે લોન આપવા વાત કરી. શર્મીલાબહેન ગામમાં એક રૂમના ભાડાના મકાનમાં રહે. વળી વિચરતી જાતિના નહિ એટલે ઈલાબહેને પ્રથમ તો ‘તમને અમે લોન ના આપીએ એમ કહીને ના પાડી.’ શર્મીલાબેન નિરાશ થયાં. પણ ઈલાબહેનનો પીછો ના છોડ્યો. ‘અમને કેમ ના આપો? અમે પણ જરૂરિયાતમંદ છીએ. હું લોન ભરી દઈશ બહેન ભરોષો તો મુકો.’ એમ વારે વારે કહ્યા કરે. આખરે ઇલાબહેન એમને vssm ના કાર્યાલય પર લઇ આવ્યાં. મળ્યાં, વાતો થઈ. 

શર્મિલાબહેન જીતેશભાઈ વસાવા. એક જ સ્વપ્ન પોતાની દીકરીને સારું ભણાવવી છે અને એ માટે મારે કમાવવું છે. હાલમાં પતિની એક આવકમાં આ બધું કરવું મુશ્કેલ છે. 

‘કેટલી લોન જોઈએ છે?’

’૧૦,૦૦૦’

‘શું કામ કરશો?’

‘ઘરેથી સાડીનો વેપાર શરુ કરવો છે’

‘વેચવાનું ફાવશે?’

‘હું કરી લઈશ.. મારે કામ કરવું છે ઘર બહાર જઈશ તો મારી દીકરીની સંભાળ નહિ રહે અને આ બધું એના માટે જ તો કરવું છે’

આપણે લોન આપી. છ મહિના થયા લોન લીધે રૂ.૫૦૦૦ની લોન એમણે ભરી પણ દીધી. દીકરી સ્કૂલ જાય એટલે એ સાડી વેચવા આસપાસના ગામો પીરાણા, ઓડ, સૈજપુર, પીપળજમાં પણ જાય. હવે સાડી વેચવામાં ફાવટ આવી ગઈ છે અને નફો પણ સારો મળે છે. ધંધો કેવો ચાલે છે એવું પૂછતાં, શર્મિલાબહેને હસતાં હસતાં કહ્યું, ‘મારા ઘરવાળા જેટલું જ હું પણ મહીને કમાઈ લઉ છું.’

એમને હવે સાડીની દુકાન કરવી છે. લોનની બાકીની રકમ સામટી ભરી થોડી વધારે લોન આપવાની વાત એ કરી રહ્યા છે. શુભ થઇ રહ્યું છે એનો આનંદ છે...

This sure is a clever way of letting us know…...

On 26th January we happen to visit the children staying at the Tharad hostel.  The children gave us a very warm and enthusiastic welcome. Later,  they presented us with a nicely gift wrapped box. It is like a ritual now, whenever  children have to tell us something the put a beautifully  written note in a box, gift wrap it and present it to us, never forgetting to take pictures. Taking a picture is  necessary as it serves as a proof…just in case we forget.  Wait for a couple of days and then follow up on the demand. What a novel way to demand … wish we could ask the officials  and politicians on our pending applications in such a manner as well. We do  have RTI,  but still…..

In one of the notes the children wrote to me about the manner in which they rebelled against their parents to come ad study at the hostel, what they wish so become when they grow up, their dreams and their aspirations. In another note they wrote about the difficulties  they face because of the rebel and conditions back home and some facilities they require for studying better.  

The problem being - these children have to walk 3 kms every day to reach school and coaching ( the teacher thinks these children are very clever and some extra coaching will help them, so calls them for coaching in the evening). Walking does not make them tired but takes away lot of their time so they need a bicycle. Their parents have not given them enough blankets and mattress and the nights in Tharad get really chilly, a small desk, notebooks, school bags etc. etc.   

The children were not pleading for these things but the letter reflected their confidence and right on us. The studies will go on even without these stuff. They are here to study and that they will with complete dedication. The 30 Nath Vadee children studying in 4 schools of Tharad are showing excellent results in academics. These kids present Shri. Rashminbhai ( who was also present) a hand made helicopter that could really fly. Such ingenious skills they have. We are sure they will excel in life…..

પોતાની વાત કહેવાની અનોખી રીત...

થરાદ હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતાં અમારાં બાળકોને મળવા તા.૨૬ જાન્યુઆરી ૨૦૧૫ ના જવાનું થયું. બાળકોએ ઉત્સાહથી સ્વાગત કર્યું પણ પછી એક સરસ મજાનું ગીફ્ટ પેક આપ્યું. બાળકોને કઇંક કહેવું હોય તો હંમેશા ગીફ્ટ પેક કરીને એમાં એટલી સુંદર રીતે ચિઠ્ઠી મુકી જાહેરમાં બધાં જ બાળકોની વચ્ચે આપે અને એનો ફોટો પણ પડાવે. મૂળ અમે કોઈ ભૂલી ના જઈએ એની સાબિતી એમની પાસે રાખે..!!

ચિઠ્ઠી આપ્યાના બે દિવસ રાહ જોવાની અને પછી એની ઉઘરાણી કરવાની..કેવી મજાની રીત.. કાશ નેતાઓને કે અધિકારીઓને આપેલી આપણી અરજીનું આ રીતે પૂછી શકતાં હોત તો? RTI છે પણ ...

મને આપેલી એક ચિઠ્ઠીમાં બાળકો કેવી રીતે પોતાની મરજીથી માં-બાપનું માન્ય વગર ભણવા માટે  હોસ્ટેલમાં આવી ગયાની વાત અને પોતાને શું બનવું છે એનું સ્વપ્ન લખ્યું હતું. બીજી ચિઠ્ઠીમાં ઘરમાંથી જે સ્થિતિમાંથી એ ભણવા નીકળી ગયા એટલે કેટલીક મુશ્કેલી વેઠી રહ્યા છે તે અને ભણવા થોડી સગવડ જોઈએ છે એ અંગે લખ્યું હતું. 

જેમાં રોજ ૩ કી.મી. ચાલીને સ્કૂલ જવાનું. ટ્યુશન જવાનું(એમની શાળાના જ શિક્ષક આ બાળકોની હોશિયારી જોઇને એમને રાતના પોતાના ઘરે ભણવા બોલાવે છે). થાક નથી લાગતો પણ સમય બગડે છે એટલે સાયકલ જોઈએ છે, માં-બાપે ઓઢવા – પાથરવા સરખું આપ્યું નથી અને થરાદમાં ઠંડી ખુબ છે એ, ભણવા માટે શક્ય હોય તો ઢાળિયું, નોટબૂક, દફતર વગેરે જેવી ખુબ નાની નાની ચીજો માટે લખ્યું હતું. 

બાળકોના લખાણમાં આજીજી નથી પણ અમે એમનાં જ છીએ અને એમનો અમારા પર પૂરો હક છે એ ભાવથી આ બધું લખ્યું હતું અને છેલ્લે આ બધું નહિ હોય તો પણ હવે ભણવું તો છે જ. હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતાં નાથવાદીના ૩૦ બાળકો તો થરાદની જે ચાર સ્કૂલમાં ભણે છે એ સ્કૂલમાં પણ અવલ્લ છે.. એમણે શ્રી રશ્મિનભાઈને પોતાના હાથેથી બનાવેલું હેલીકોપ્ટર આપ્યું અને એ પણ ચલાવીને બતાવ્યું.. આવા આ બાળકો જીવનમાં પણ અવ્વલ રહેશે એવી શ્રદ્ધા ..

Our FAITH in people of Vadia…...

VADIA - a small sleepy village tucked on the border of Gujarat and Rajasthan, a village infamously famous for the profession the ladies of this village are engaged into. The village is undergoing a gradual but very concrete transition in a positive direction. There was a time when the village was divided into many  fractions, bringing  them all on one platform was next to impossible.  A meeting called to discuss some crucial issues the village faced could no tho beyond half- an-hour, it was bound to end on a bitter note. How will we be able to bring them all together, how will we bring the young girls and women out of the hell they  were living in?? were the questions that constantly bothered us, we struggled to find a way out. Amidst all the depressing scenario all around it was one thing that ket us going and that was our FAITH in the people of Vadia, consequent to which after 8 years of persistent efforts we are abel to witness some concrete change in the the ground realities of this village, a change that always brings a smile on our faces. 

A lot of families in Vadia are now willing got work hard to sustain their families. The occupation they are turning to is farming. In 2006 when we first visited the village it felt like along with the women and girls,  the land of this village was also cursed. 180 acres of land which was allotted to the villagers was lying uncultivated. The reason being absence of irrigation facilities. Later a bore-well  was installed and people began farming the small plots of land they were alloted. One bore well  was not enough for water to reach so many families. In 2012 the village witnessed another ground breaking event . The mass marriage ceremony of its daughters. This was one event that triggered amongst the villagers the desire to stop pushing their daughters into the traditional profession that was practiced by the women of this village. It made them realise that change is possible and if one is willing to work hard life can be much better from the ones that they lived right now. Not all agreed to educate and equip their daughters for a better life but a lot of them pledged give up the profession that made lives of their daughters a living hell.

To stop living on the earnings of their women and daughters the families in Vadia needed some concrete alternates to earn livelihoods. One bore well was not enough and there was an urgent need for another one. But the underground water tables in the this part of Gujarat  are so low that the cost of  digging another bore was too high. Again getting the government clearances of another bore was also a challenging task. With such low water levels the possibilities of bore-well’s running dry too soon was also high. One major issues the farmers face are the depleting  water tables in almost entire Gujarat. The greed and over exploitation of this precious natural resource is the reason behind such worrying situation. The water levels here are as low as 1200 to 1300 feet. The potability of water at such low levels is another issue of concern. How long can we just keep taking from the nature. The need to strike a balance here was crucial too. 

There is no doubt that second bore well should happen in Vadia, but how can Vadia contribute towards sustaining and improving the water tables in their region?? A meeting to discuss the matter was organised on 26th January 2015. Rashminbhai Sanghvi, VSSM’s patron from Mumbai and some one who has been very actively associated in the water management works in Surendranagar district was with us to guide us through. He had pledged to make people think in the direction of water management and conservation. What will happen if we will pump out the underground water that has been accumulated for thousands of years, why conserving rain water is important, how can they contribute towards conserving rain water in their fields??? were the some of the focal points explained  by Rashminbhai  in very simple language. The villagers were quite receptive and plans were made to commence digging before the monsoon  parts of their farms to store the rain water and in the village deepen the lower grounds where the rains water naturally accumulates every year.  This because Vadia does not have a lake. 

It is a feeling a  deep gratification one feels on hearing the men in the village say ‘We are prepared to work hard and we shall work hard.’ VSSM has supported numerous families in Vadia to begin alternate professions. One such Gulabbhai came to us just as we were leaving the village after the meeting, ‘Ben, I have bought a buffalo, I sell 8-9 litres of milk to the dairy everyday, come and see my buffalo once!!! These are the same men who were once taunted by others as lazy lumps. Th faith we put in them is showing such remarkable results. I am deeply thankful to all of you for supporting us in such challenging tasks, it would have been difficult to go ahead without all of yours undoubting support.

એક શ્રદ્ધા વાડિયાના માણસોમાં..

બનાસકાંઠાના વાડિયા ગામમાં ધીમી ગતિએ પણ નક્કર બદલાવ આવી રહ્યો છે. એક સમયે ગામમાં જ એટલાં ભાગલાં હતાં કે સૌને સાથે બેસાડવા અમારા માટે સૌથી મોટો પડકાર થઇ જતો. ગામનાં કોઈ પણ પ્રશ્ને બેઠક કરીએ તો બેઠક અડધા કલાકમાં જ ઝગડામાં પરિણમે.. આમાં સૌને સાથે બેસતા કેમ કરીશું? જે તકલીફ બહેનો સહન કરી રહી છે એનું સમાધાન કેમ થશે? સાચું કહું તો રસ્તો સૂઝતો નહોતો. પણ એક શ્રદ્ધા વાડિયાના માણસોમાં હતી અને એને પરિણામે છેલ્લાં ૮ વર્ષના સઘન પ્રયત્નથી એક નક્કર બદલાવ જેને જોઇને સંતોષ થાય તેવો આવ્યો છે.

મૂળ તો હવે મહેનત કરીને જીવવાની ઈચ્છા રાખનારાં ઘણા પરિવારો ખેતી કરવાં લાગ્યા છે. ૨૦૦૬માં ગામમાં ગયાં હતાં ત્યારે આ ગામના લોકોની સાથે સાથે જાણે જમીન પણ શ્રાપિત હોય એવું લાગ્યું હતું. સરકારે ફાળવેલી ખેતી લાયક જમીન (૧૮૦ એકર જમીન) પણ બંજર પડેલી. પાણીની સગવડ ના હોવાના કારણે આ બનેલું. બોરવેલ થયો અને ધીમે ધીમે લોકો  ખેતી કરતાં થયા. ૨૦૧૨માં વાડીયામાં પહેલીવાર દીકરીઓના સમૂહ લગ્ન થયા અને પછી તો મીઠા સંઘર્ષ શરુ થયા. દીકરીને ભણાવીને એના લગ્ન કરાવવા કે પછી એજ વાડિયાની પરંપરામાં ધકેલવી. ઘણા પરિવારોએ સંકલ્પ કર્યો અને પરંપરામાંથી નીકળી ગયાં. તો કેટલાંક આજે પણ શું કરવું એની દ્વિધામાં છે અને હજુ પણ જૂની ઘરેડમાં જ જીવે છે.. 

ખેતી લાયક ૧૮૦ એકર જમીન અને સિંચાઈ માટે એક બોરવેલ. બીજો બોરવેલ થાય તો ગામની બધી  જમીનને પાણી મળી રહે એવી મહેનત કરી જીવવાવાળા લોકોની લાગણી. પણ બીજા બોરવેલની મંજૂરી અને ખર્ચ મોટો પડકાર છે...  વળી બોરવેલ બની પણ જાય પણ જમીનમાંથી પાણી ખેંચ્યા જ કરવાનું એને પાછું આપવાનું થાય જ નહી તો બોરવેલ ફેઈલ થવાની સંભાવના વધી જાય.. આમ પણ ઉત્તર ગુજરાતમાં લોકો સંપતિવાન થયા અને બોરવેલ થકી ખેતી કરતાં પણ થયા પણ પાણીના તળની તો એમણે ચિંતા જ નથી કરી એટલે જ પાણીના તળ ૧૨૦૦ કે ૧૩૦૦ ફૂટ ઊંડા ગયા છે. વળી આટલાં ઊંડા ગયા પછી પણ પાણી મીઠું મળશે કે કેમ એ પ્રશ્ન તો યથાવત છે જ..

વાડિયામાં બીજો બોરવેલ થવો જ જોઈએ પણ એ પહેલાં ગામ તરીકે સૌ પોતાની નૈતિક ફરજ સમજી વરસાદી પાણી પોતાના ગામમાંથી વહી ના જાય એ માટે શું કરવું એનું આયોજન કરવાં તા.૨૬ જાન્યુઆરી ૨૦૧૫ના રોજ વાડિયા જવાનું થયું. મુંબઈથી vssm ના કામોમાં સહાયભૂત થતા અને જેમણે સુરેન્દ્રનગરમાં વોટર મેનેજમેન્ટમાં ખુબ કામ કર્યું છે એવા આદરણીય શ્રી રશ્મિનભાઈ સાથે આવ્યાં. મૂળ તો એમણે આ પરિવારોને આ દિશામાં વિચરતા કરવાનો નિર્ધાર કરેલો. રશ્મિનભાઈએ ખુબ સાદી ભાષામાં લોકોને વરસાદી પાણી અને હજારો વર્ષથી જમીનના પેટાળમાં પડેલા પાણી જમીનમાંથી ખેંચી લઈશું તો શું થશે? એ અંગે વાત કરી.. સૌને સમજાયું . આ પરિવારોએ પોતાના ખેતરના શેઠામાં ચોમાસા પહેલાં વરસાદી પાણી રોકવા ખાડા કરવાનું તથા ગામમાં તળાવ નથી પણ ચોમાસામાં જે જગ્યા પર પાણી ભરાઈ રહે છે એ જગ્યાએ ઊંડા ખાડા કરવાનું આયોજન કર્યું.. 

અમે મહેનત કરીશું.. એવું જયારે ગામનાં પુરુષો કહે ત્યારે ખુબ સંતોષ થાય છે.. સંસ્થાએ ગામમાં કેટલાંક પરિવારોને નવા વ્યવસાય માટે લોન આપી છે. એમાંના ગુલાબભાઈ અમે જયારે વાડિયાથી નીકળી રહ્યા હતાં ત્યારે નજીક આવીને કહ્યું, ‘બેન હું ભેંસ લાવ્યો છું. સવાર સાંજનું થઈને ૮ થી ૯ લીટર દૂધ ડેરીમાં ભરાવું છું. મારી ભેંસ એક વાર જોઈ જાવ ને?’ આ એજ માણસો છે જેમણે જોઇને સૌ કહેતાં આ લોકોના હાડકા હરામના થઇ ગયા છે એમને કામ નથી કરવું.. પણ એમનામાં મુકેલી શ્રદ્ધાનું પરિણામ હવે દેખાવા માંડ્યું છે.. આ કામમાં મદદરૂપ થનાર સૌ સ્વજનોનો આભાર માનું છું એમનાં સહયોગ વગર આ બધું શક્ય નહોતું..

‘Do dare to spend a single winter night under these open sky..'

143 nomadic families have been allotted residential plots in Juna Deesa. However, the extreme unevenness and bumpy conditions of the land makes it impossible to commence construction on it. Surfacing the land  requires huge funds and there are no provisions for the same in the government welfare budgets. Still, money was collected for the same by the families. The amount collected was Rs. 3,00,000/- (3 lacs). The levelling activity did commence but the dominant elements of the village began opposing the levelling. ‘ No activity what so ever should be done on this land,’ they ordered. What is the point in getting into conflict with the village, hence we stopped the activity and talked to the Mamlatdar on the matter. The officialdom has been very supportive through out but how do we  deal with such strong opposition??  We requested police protection but since they were busy wit the 26th January security logistics the matters will be taken after that is what we were told!! So we waited for 26th January to pass by. We spoke to them again to refresh their memory. Will be done, was the reply. But how long do we wait???

The group opposing the settlement of these families itself  belongs to marginalised community but now they are able and powerful, ‘ this is our land, we do not want anybody settling here,’ is their bold claim. Fact being this plot of land is government’s and there are documental evidences of it been allotted to these families. 

It has been 4 years and still the matter is far from being resolved. The families and us all are tired and frustrated with the state of affairs. ‘Do dare to spend a single winter night under the open sky and you shall empathise with these families,’ we told the people opposing. We wonder if any one is listening..

‘એક રાત છાપરામાં કે ખુલ્લા આકાશની નીચે આવી ટાઢમાં પસાર તો કરો..’

જુના ડીસામાં ૧૪૩ વિચરતા પરિવારોને સરકારે રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ આપ્યાં. પણ જમીન પર ઘર બાંધવું શક્ય નહિ. ખુબ મોટા ખાડા. સરકારે જમીન સમતળ માટે કોઈ જોગવાઈ નહોવાનું કહ્યું. સમતળ માટે માતબર ખર્ચ થવાનો હતો. આખરે વિચરતા પરિવારોએ જ પરિવાર દીઠ અમુક રકમ કાઢીને જમીન સમતળ કરવાનો નિર્ણય કર્યો. રૂ. ૩,૦૦,૦૦૦ તો ભેગા પણ થઈ ગયાં. જેસીબીથી જમીન સમતળનું કામ શરુ થયું કે ગામના કેટલાંક માથાભારે તત્વોએ ‘આ જમીન પર કોઈ પણ પ્રવૃત્તિ નથી કરવાની.’ એમ કહીને વિરોધ શરુ કર્યો. ગામ સાથે સંઘર્ષ કરવાનું માંડી વાળી અમે કામ બંધ કર્યું અને

મામલતદાર શ્રીને રજૂઆત કરી. આખું વહીવટીતંત્ર ખુબ હકારાત્મક પણ વિરોધનું શું કરવું. પોલીસ પ્રોટેક્શન માંગ્યું. પણ સૌ ૨૬ જાન્યુઆરીમાં વ્યસ્ત હતાં એટલે એ પછી આ અંગે નિર્ણય કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. ૨૬મી પણ ગઈ પણ હજુ સુધી આ સંદર્ભે કોઈ નિર્ણય લેવાયો નથી. અમે ફરી રજૂઆત કરી છે. સારું થશે એવું આશ્વાસન પણ મળ્યું છે પણ ક્યાં સુધી રાહ જોવાની???

આમ તો ડીસામાં આ પરિવારોનો વિરોધ કરનારા એક વખતના વંચિતો જ છે પણ આજે હવે સક્ષમ છે એટલે, ‘ આ પરિવારોનો વસવાટ આ જગ્યા પર ના જોઈએ. આ જગ્યા અમારી છે એમ કહે છે’ આ જગ્યા સરકારી છે અને આ પરિવારોને ફાળવી છે એના પુરાવા છે છતાં આવો દાવો! 

વિચરતા પરિવારો અને સાથે સાથે અમે પણ થાકી ગયા છીએ ચાર વર્ષ થયાં છતાં આ સમસ્યાનો ઉકેલ આવતો નથી. વિરોધ કરનારને અમે કહ્યું, ‘એક રાત છાપરામાં કે ખુલ્લા આકાશની નીચે આવી ટાઢમાં પસાર કરો તો આ પરિવારોની પીડા સમજાશે.’ પણ અહી તો ક્યાં કોઈને સમજવું છે?
