Jmana and her younger sister Jyoti came in our contact when they first were enrolled at the Doliya girls hostel by Kishankaka the Nat community leader. Jmana belongs to Nat community and she lost her mother when she was just 5 years old. Her paternal grandparents with some help from paternal uncle took care of these small girls. The grand mother has worked really hard to take care of the two grand-daughters. Whatever meagre income she had from selling fire wood has been spend on taking care of the girls while their father took up drinking and disowning them. Such conditions have made Jmana very sensitive and distressed child. The dire economic condition of the family has failed to provide the required nourishment to these girls. In a couple of years of her mother’s death Jmana began having attacks of epilepsy. Her grandmother had no money to get the basic treatment so she would retort to home remedies like making Jmana smell onions and old shoes!!!
Once enrolled in the hostel the girls started getting the required care but Jmana’s convulsions continued as many as three times in a day. She was taken to hospital in Rajkot and the necessary investigations were carried out. The doctors advised that with her kind of illness Jamana requires at least 3 years of continued treatment. The VSSM team and the facilities at Doliya were not geared up to take care of such severe medical issues and hence we decided to send her to her home with all the necessary medication. Whne we spoke to her grandmother about our decision she said, ‘Ben, we are in no position to take care of her, let her be there it is ok if she does not study at all. It would be good if you keep her there.’ We could very well understand her appeal but it was difficult to keep in her in the hostel. WE asked Kishankaka to come and take her back. Once home Jmana's condition deteriorated which required her to be taken to the Children’s hospital in Palanpur. From here she was shifted to Lion’s hospital in Mehsana where she stayed for 5-6 days. The message is same by every doctor ; Jmana requires medication for at least 3 years. Now Ishwarbhai the VSSM team member keep a continuous tab on Jmana’s condition and ensures that the medicine stock is maintained. Jmana is eager to get better and go back to the hostel and start studying.
Poverty and harsh lifestyles are responsible for such health status of nomadic kids.It has been our observation that 25 to 30% nomadic kids have some or other medical condition.

ડીસામાં નટ પરિવારમાં જન્મેલી જમના પાંચ વર્ષની હતી એ વખતે એની માં બીમારીમાં મૃત્યુ પામી. જમના અને એની નાનીબેન જ્યોતિને એની દાદી(બબુમાં)એ જ મોટી કરી. પિતા તો દારૂના રવાડે ચડી ગયેલા. આર્થિક સ્થિતિ સારી નહિ. દાદી લાકડાં કાપીને લાવે અને વેચે અને સૌને ખવડાવે. થોડી ઘણી મદદ કાકા કરે. પણ કાકાને પણ એમનો પરિવાર એમનું જ માંડ પૂરું થાય. આવામાં પુરતો પોષણયુક્ત આહાર ન મળવાના કારણે તથા પોતાના પરિવારની સ્થિતિ આટલી ખરાબ કેમ? એવો સતત વિચાર કરતી જમનાને ખેંચની બીમારી લાગુ પડી ગઈ. જમનાના દાદીની દવા કરાવવાની ક્ષમતા તો હતી નહિ. એટલે જયારે પણ ખેંચ આવે એટલે જૂતા કે ડુંગળી સુંઘાડે પણ દવા નહિ...
જુન-૨૦૧૪ના નવા શિક્ષણસત્રમાં આપણી હોસ્ટેલમાં નટ સમુદાયના આગેવાન કિશનકાકાએ ડીસાથી ૧૫ બાળકોને ડોળીયા હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા મુક્યા. જેમાં જમના અને એની નાનીબેન જ્યોતિ પણ આવ્યાં. હોસ્ટેલમાં પણ જમનાને દિવસમાં બે થી ત્રણ વાર ખેંચ આવે. આપણે એને રાજકોટ હોસ્પિટલ લઇ ગયા. ડોકટરે બધા રીપોર્ટ કરાવ્યા. રીપોર્ટ જોઇને એમને જમનાને સળંગ બે-ત્રણ વર્ષ દવા લેવાનું કહ્યું પણ ખેંચ તત્કાલ બંધ નહી થાય એને વાર લાગશે એમ કહ્યું. હોસ્ટેલમાં રોજ બે થી ત્રણ વાર ખેંચ આવે એટલે સૌ ચિંતામાં પડી જાય. આખરે જમનાને ઘરે મોકલવાનો નિર્ણય કર્યો. એના દાદી અને કીશનકાકા સાથે ફોન પર વાત કરી અને સ્થિતિ જણાવી. જમનાની દાદીએ ફોન પર જ કહ્યું, ‘બેન, હું એનું કંઈ કરી શકું એવી અમારી તો હાલત નથી. ભલેને ત્યાં રેતી. ના ભણે તો પણ ચાલશે પણ એને પાછી ના મોકલો તો સારું.’ એમની સ્થિતિ સમજાતી હતી પણ હોસ્ટેલમાં જમનાને રાખવી મુશ્કેલ હતી. કિશનકાકા સાથે વાત થઇ એમનો દીકરો આવીને જમનાને હોસ્ટેલમાંથી લઇ ગયો. અમે એને દવા કરાવવા કહ્યું હતું અને એ માટે જે પણ મદદ જોઈએ એ કરવાની ખાત્રી આપી. હોસ્ટેલમાંથી ઘરે ગયા પછી જમાનાની હાલત વધારે ગંભીર થઇ એને પાલનપુર બાળકોની હોસ્પીટલમાં દાખલ કરવી પડી. ત્યાંથી એને મહેસાણા લાયન્સમાં દાખલ કરી. લગભગ પાંચ દિવસ સતત હોસ્પીટલમાં રહી. હવે એની તબિયત સારી છે પણ એને ત્રણ વર્ષ સુધી દવા લેવાની છે. એમાં ચૂક થાય એ દિવસે પાછી ખેંચ આવી જાય છે. vssmના કાર્યકર ઈશ્વરભાઈ અવાર નવાર જમનાના ખબર અંતર પૂછે છે આપણે એની દવાનું પણ પુરતું ધ્યાન રાખીએ છીએ.. જમનાને પણ ઝટ સજા થઈને હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા જવું છે...
મૂળ તો ગરીબાઈના કારણે વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારોમાં બીમારીનું પ્રમાણ વધારે છે. હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા આવતાં ૨૫ થી ૩૦ ટકા બાળકો કોઈને કોઈ બીમારી લઈને જ આવતાં હોય છે. આ પ્રમાણ ઘટે એ માટે આપણે પ્રયત્નશીલ છીએ..
