An untainted occupation today keeps police away..

Around three months back I received a call from Gulabbhai Dafer, ‘ Ben, the police is frequenting are Dangaas too often now, just because we are Dafer.  They keep asking for weapons and begin harassing if we say we don’t have any!!! The police assume that just because we guard the farm or village boundaries we must be having weapons. Before they would come and harass because they thought we looted people now those accusations have eased and ones for weapons have began. We are fed up of all these harassment by police. We are suspected of possessing any weapons because we guard boundaries so just want to give up this profession.   Want to take up some other work!!! Can you help??'

We asked him to call us once he decides on war business he wishes  to start. Two days later he calls up asking for support to buy a camel cart.

'A new camel cart costs anything between Rs. 50,000 to 60,000 but there is a person in the village who  is willing to sell his cart for 35,000. If the organisation gives me a loan of Rs. 30,000 I will repay the amount through monthly instalments as decided by the organisation,’ Gulabbhai requested.

‘Why just camel cart,’ I asked.

‘All farmers in the village cannot afford to transport their produce in a tractor, the camel cart becomes a cheaper option. The business will be good and when the farming season is over the cart will be used to ferry bricks and sand.. so finding work is not going to be a problem. People who are willing to work hard do  find work,’ he replied with lot of faith. 

Gulabbhai had a strong belief that he will succeed in the new profession. Hence we decided to support that self belief and lent him Rs. 30,000. He and his family are delighted with the new beginnings. He has already returned Rs. 2,000.

‘બેન અમે ડફેર છીએ એટલે પોલીસ વારે ઘડીએ ડંગામાં આવીને અમારી પાસે હથિયાર માંગે અમને રંજાડે. અમે હથિયાર નથી રાખતા પણ સીમ રખોપું કરીએ એટલે પોલીસ ધારી જ લે કે, અમારી પાસે હથિયાર હોય જ. પહેલાં લૂંટ માટે આવી જ રીતે હેરાન કરતાં પણ હમણાંથી હવે લૂંટની શાંતી છે પણ હથિયાર ... તોબા થઇ ગઈ છે. પોલીસથી હેરાન થઇ ગ્યા છીએ. હવે સીમરખોપું જ નથી કરવું. સીમરખોપું કરીએ તો હથિયાર રાખવાની શંકા આવે ને. મારે કંઇક ધંધો કરવો છે.’ એવો ફોન ગુલાબભાઈએ ત્રણ મહિના પહેલાં કર્યો.  શું ધંધો કરવો છે એ નક્કી કરી એમને ફોન કરવા કહ્યું. એમણે વાત થયાના બે દિવસ પછી ઊંટલારી માટે મદદ કરવા કહ્યું.  નવી ઊંટલારીની કિંમત રૂ. ૫૦,૦૦૦ થી ૬૦,૦૦૦ થાય. એમણે કહ્યું, ‘ગામમાં જ એક ભાઈ પાસે લારી છે એ એમને કાઢી નાખવી છે એ મને રૂ. ૩૫,૦૦૦ માં આપે છે.’ સંસ્થા રૂ.૩૦,૦૦૦ ની લોન આપે તો હું મહીને તમે નક્કી કરો એટલી રકમનો હપ્તો લોન પેટે પાછો આપીશ.’ મેં એમને પૂછ્યું, ‘લારી જ કેમ?’ એમણે કહ્યું, ‘ગામડામાં નાના ખેડૂતોને ટ્રેક્ટરથી સામાન ભરાવવો ના પોસાય એ લોકો ઊંટલારીનો ઉપયોગ કરે છે એટલે મને કામ મળશે. વળી ખેતીની સીઝન ના ચાલે ત્યારે ઈંટ, રેતી ભરવાનું કામ મળી જાયને.. મહેનત કરવી છે એટલે કામ તો મળશે..’ ગુલાબભાઈને પોતે ખુબ સારો વ્યવસાય કરી શકશે એવો વિશ્વાસ હતો. એમના આ વિશ્વાસને આપણે રૂ. ૩૦,૦૦૦ની લોન આપીને બળ આપ્યું. એમનો પરિવાર પણ ખુશ છે. એમણે લોન પેટે રૂ. ૨૦૦૦ ના બે હપ્તા પણ આપણને પરત આપી દીધા છે.  વિચરતી જાતિના તમામને માનભેર રોજગારી અપાવવામાં નિમિત બનનાર સૌ સ્નેહીજનોનો પણ આભાર વ્યક્ત કરું છું.
