To wed or get engaged saves the daughters of this particular village from a life of hell. Here is an opportunity to contribute to the weddings of such daughters!

Vadia village of Banaskantha has been known for unpleasant reasons. It is not only the girls; parents are also educating their sons. As a result, many boys have graduated from college.

Getting their daughters married has become a custom now. Many families even dread the name Vadia. Hence they have relocated to other places. Two daughters belonging to such families recently got married. The economic condition of these families is deplorable; many tried to lure them into sending their daughters into prostitution (which was the traditional occupation of this village). But the families remained determined, “how can we call ourselves parents if we push our girls into a life of hell?” was their firm reply.

If parents of all of Vadia’s daughters could think like so, the conditions would improve only for the better.

Well, we were instrumental in getting the two daughters married. US-based respected Shri Rameshbhai Shah provided huge support to meet the expenses of the weddings. We are grateful to Shri Shah for the support he has provided.

VSSM’s team member Rameshbhai has pledged to make sure each daughter of Vadia is married; we pray for his pledge to come true. Ramesbhai worked tirelessly during this wedding.

We wish both these daughters happiness and prosperity in their lives.

દિકરીઓના લગ્નમાં નિમિત્ત બનવું એ તો લાહવો. પાછુ એવા ગામની દીકરીઓ કે જ્યાં લગ્ન કે સગાઈ એ દિકરીઓને નર્કાગારમાં જતી રોકે. 

બનાસકાંઠાનું વાડિયા. ત્યાંની શકલ હવે બદલાઈ રહી છે. પરિવારો દીકરીઓને સાથે સાથે છોકરાંઓને ભણાવી રહ્યા છે. કેટલાક દીકરાઓ ગ્રેજ્યુએટ પણ થયા.

દીકરીઓના લગ્નોની જાણે હવે પરંપરા બની ગઈ. ઘણા પરિવારોને તો વાડિયા નામથી પણ છોછ છે એટલે ગામ છોડી દીધું છે. આવા જ પરિવારોની બે દિકરીઓના લગ્ન હમણાં થયા. આર્થિક સ્થિતિ પરિવારની નબળી. મજૂરી કરીને નભે. લાલચો ઢગલો. દીકરી દેહવ્યાપાર કરે એમાં આપણે ક્યાં મેણું હોય એવું લોકો કહે. પણ આ પરિવારોએ કહ્યું દીકરી તો સાસરે શોભે. એને જાતે કરીને નર્કમાં ધકેલવાનું અમે કરીએ તો મા-બાપ શેના?

બસ આટલી વાત વાડિયાના દરેક મા-બાપ સમજી જાય તો સ્થિતિ બદલાઈ જાય..

ખેર આ દિકરીઓના લગ્નમાં અમે નિમિત્ત બન્યા. અમેરિકામાં રહેતા આદરણીય રમેશભાઈ શાહે આ બે દિકરીઓના લગ્ન ખર્ચમાં ઘણી મોટી મદદ કરી. તેમનો ઘણો આભાર.

અમારા કાર્યકર રમેશભાઈ ખડેપગે રહ્યા. તેમની નેમ ગામની દરેક દિકરી પરણે તેવી.. તેમની આ ભાવનાને પણ પ્રણામ.

બાકી બેય દિકરીઓ સુખી થાય તેવી શુભભાવના...

The promise of a pledge!

A pledge to participate in deepening community lakes to raise the groundwater tables of their village.

Until now, we have been working to deepen the lakes of the Banaskantha region, with around 250 lakes have been repaired and excavated in the last few years.

This year at the request of Minister Shri Rushikesh Patel, we have launched participatory water conservation efforts in Mehsana as well. Rushikeshbhai is like an elder brother who stands beside us whenever required.

VSSM, with support from Shri Krishnakant Mehta and in partnership with Government’s Sujalam Sufalam campaign, deepened the lake in Saduthala village of Mehsana district. Although we prefer to work in partnership with the local/village community, the village did not partner for this particular lake.

Recently, when I  was in Saduthala village, the villagers shared their water woes at length, and the village leadership offered their support for deepening the second lake. The groundwater table has dropped to 1000 feet, and the amount of water the borewells pump out has drastically reduced as compared to 1971.

The communities are worried about water, for how long they will run away from villages! So we asked them to partner with us on water conservation efforts. Once the village leadership agreed to partner, we dredged the other lake.

However, we would want the villages of Mehsana to grow as aware as Banaskantha.

Well, the above pledge taken by the community will help them improve their water situation and future. We hope to work to create water awareness and water shrines in Mehsana. The image shared here are of the lake before and after it was excavated.

સંકલ્પની આ તસવીર મહેસાણા જિલ્લાથી...

સંકલ્પ પોતાના ગામના ભૂગર્ભજળ ઉપર આવે તે માટે તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનો અને એ માટે પોતાની ભાગીદારીનો.

આમ તો અત્યાર સુધી અમે બનાસકાંઠામાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરતા. 250થી વધુ તળાવો અમે ત્યાં છેલ્લા કેટલાક વર્ષોમાં કર્યા. 

આ વર્ષે મહેસાણા સામુ પણ આદરણીય ઋષીકેશભાઈ પટેલ માનનીય મંત્રી શ્રીના કહેવાથી લમણો વાળ્યો.

ઋષીકેશભાઈ મોટાભાઈ જેવા અમારા કાર્યોમાં અમને સરકારી કામોમાં જ્યાં જરૃર પડે મદદ કરે.

મહેસાણાનું સદુથલાગામ ત્યાં અમે સરકારના સુજલામ સુફલામ અભીયાન અને VSSM સાથે સંકળાયેલા પ્રિય સ્વજન શ્રી ક્રિષ્ણકાંત મહેતાની મદદથી તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવાનું કર્યું. 

ગામની ભાગીદારી આમાં કાંઈ રહી નહીં અને અમને તો ભાગીદારી થાય તો કામ કરવાની મજા પડે. 

તળાવ થયા પછી ગામમાં ગઈ ત્યારે ગામે પોતાના ગામની સમસ્યાની વાતો કરી. એ વખતે ગામ પોતે ભાગીદારી કરે અમે જેસીબી અમે મુકીએ માટી ઉપાડવાનું ગામ કરે તો બીજુ તળાવ કરવામાં અમને વાંધો નથીની વાત કરી. વળી પાણીની સમસ્યાઓની પણ ઢગલો વાતો થઈ. ખાસ તો તળ કેટલે ઊંડે પહોંચ્યાની વાત ને ખેડૂત પાસે જમીન હોય પણ પાણી ન હોય તો શું થાય એની પણ વાતો.. લગભગ 1000 ફૂટે આ વિસ્તારમાં પણ પાણી પહોંચ્યું છે. 1971માં બોરવેલમાંથી જેટલું પાણી નીકળતું આજે એમાં બહુ મોટો ફરક છે.. 

ટૂંકમાં પાણીને લઈને ગામ ચિંતામાં છે.. બસ અમે જળસંચયના કાર્યો માટે ભાગીદારીની વાત કરી. મૂળ શહેર છોડી કેટલે જશું ને ખેતી નહીં કરીએ તો ખાસુ શું એ પણ પ્રશ્ન...

છેવટે ગામે પોતાની ભાગીદારી નોંધાવવાનું નક્કી કર્યું.. બસ બીજુ તળાવ પણ કરીશું. 

પણ મહેસાણાના ગામોમાં બનાસકાંઠામાં જેવી જાગૃતિ આવી તેવી આવે તે જરૃરી છે..

ખેસ સદુથલાગામે એક સુંદર સંકલ્પ કર્યો. આ સંકલ્પથી આવનારા વખતમાં મહેસાણામાં જશળસંચયના વધારે કામો થાય વધારે જલમંદિરો બને તેમ કરીશું.

“We want to plant and raise trees at our village’s crematorium; Ben will you please help us achieve that?” the Sarpanch of Jenaal village had called up in April 2022 with this request.

“We receive numerous such requests, but when it comes to walk the talk, most of them fall short of expectations. We appoint a Vriksh Mitra, but the community must also monitor and put in continuous efforts. If that does not happen, all our efforts fail.”

“Ben, you, please come and meet us; we will never give you a chance to complain.”

There was a sense of truth in his request; we decided to go and visit the crematorium. The entire area was filled with gando baval, but the Sarpanch assured us of getting it all cleaned. They also brought a water connection to the crematorium. Once the crematorium grounds were cleared by the community and the water connection was in place, we dug pits and planted 8200 trees appointed a Vriksh Mitra.

The Vriksh Mitra performed his responsibility well, but the Sarpanch would visit the plantation site every morning, spend 2-3 hours daily, and work wherever additional efforts were required.

I was recently in Jenaal where we met with community elders,  a request to elders to serve the trees was accepted unanimously.

We want thousands of birds to come and perch on these trees, if the birds begin to stay here our village will be a happy place. 

If all village leaders had the understanding Jenaal’s Sarpanch showcased, the entire region would have become green in no time.

The support to create this wilderness came through our dear Nanditabahen Parekh to create Shakuntala-Bhanu Van in memory of respected Lt. Bhanubahen and Shakuntalabahen. We are sure the souls of Bhanubahen and Shakuntalabahen would happily watch the birds, insects, and other lives that have made the forest their home.

We are grateful to Nanditaben for this beautiful homage to her elders.

'અમારા ગામના સ્મશાનમાં વૃક્ષો વાવી ઉછેરવા છે બેન તમે મદદ કરશો?'

જેનાલગામના સરપંચે 2022ના એપ્રિલ મહિનામાં ફોન પર આ વાત કહી. એ વખતે મે એમને, 'વાતો ઘણા લોકો કરે પણ ખરા અર્થમાં વાવી ઉછેરવામાં સતત દેખરેખ કરવાની આવે ત્યારે ઘણાને પાછા પડતા જોયા છે. પછી નુકશાન ઘણું થાય. અમે વૃક્ષમિત્ર રાખીએ પણ ગામની દેખરેખ સતત જોઈએ એ નહોય તો બધુ નકામુ પડે.'

'બેન એક ફેરા તમે આવો તમને કહેવાપણું હું નહીં રાખુ..'

સરપંચ શ્રીની વાતમાં સચ્ચાઈનો રણકો હતો. એટલે સ્મશાન જોવા જવાનું નકકી કર્યું. આખુ સ્મશાન ગાંડા બાવળથી ભેરલું. ગાંડા બાવળની સફાઈ અમે કરાવી લઈશું એવું સરપંચ શ્રીએ કહ્યું ને એ પછી સફાઈ કરાવી. પંચાયતના બોરવેલમાંથી પાણીની લાઈન પણ સ્મશાનમાં આપી દીધી. 

એ પછી અમે ખાડા કરી 8200 વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા ને વૃક્ષમિત્ર નીમણૂક કરી. 

વૃક્ષમિત્ર તો બરાબર ધ્યાન રાખે. પણ સરપંચ પોતે સવારના પહોરમાં સ્મશાનમાં પહોંચે. લગભગ બે થી ત્રણ કલાલ એ ઓછામાં ઓછા ત્યાં આપે. પોતે પણ જ્યાં મહેનત કરવી પડે ત્યાં લાગે. 

હમણાં જેનાલ જવાનું થયું એ વખતે ગામના વડીલો સાથે સ્મશાનમાં જ બેઠક થઈ. એ વખતે ગામના વડિલોને હવે ઝાડખાની સેવા કરવા સમય આપોની વાત કરીને સૌએ એક સૂરે એ વધાવી લીધી.  

સરપંચ કહે, 'અમારા ગામના સ્મશાનમાં હજારો પક્ષીઓ આશરા માટે આવવા જોઈએ. જો પંખીઓ સુખેથી અહીંયા રહેતા થઈ જશે તો અમારુ ગામ સુખી થઈ જશે..'

કેવી ઉત્તમ સમજણ.. દરેકગામ જેનાલ જેવા થઈ જાય તો આખો પંથક હરિયાળો થઈ જાય.

આ કાર્ય માટે મુંબઈમાં રહેતા અમારા પ્રિયસ્વજન નંદીતાબહેન પારેખ થકી અમારા આદરણીય સ્વ. ભાનુબહેન અને શંકુતલાબહેનની યાદમાં શંકુતલા ભાનુ ગ્રામવન બન્યું.. ભાનુબહેન અને શંકુલતાબેનનો આત્મા જેનાલમાં ઉછરી રહેલા જંગલમાં નિવાસ કરનાર જીવોને જોઈને જરૃર રાજી થશે..

આવું સુંદર તર્પણ આપવાનું નક્કી કરનાર પ્રિય નંદીતાબેનનો આભાર...

Mittal Patel meets Nomadic Women

As Hellen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much” same is valid with the collective strength of individuals of nomadic communities. Alone they are not equipped to tackle the challenges poverty and deprivation pose, but together, they can move mountains. The Saraniya women living in Narol have moved toward forming a collective.

The traditional occupation of the Saraniya men is to sharpen knives and tools. However, the profession has become obsolete and doesn’t earn them much. As a result, many of them have moved to another occupation.

The Saraniya women from Ahmebdabad’s Narol collect trash; early morning, with trash collecting bags on their shoulders, they set out to pick up plastic and other waste littered on the roadsides. It is a work they have learned over the years.

Collecting and lugging trash on shoulders is challenging and has its limitations. “If you loan us some money, we can buy a paddle rickshaw and cover a wider area and collect and lug more trash,” they proposed.

VSSM wants these women to become financially independent; beginning this year, we are in the process of bringing women together as collectives so that together they can start small ventures, work to resolve their issues, and we can provide the required support.

The women in Narol requested us to help them form a group and provide a paddle rickshaw to women members of the group. It was apparent we were to support such foresightedness. Some parents from the settlement also came up with the request to take their children to our hostel; in fact, some enthusiastic children brought their parents to our meeting place, “Didi, this is my mother; tell her to enroll me in your hostel!”

It has been years since I was in this settlement, yet people eagerly awaited my arrival.

Madhuben, our team member coordinating the activities in this settlement, is a dynamic lady. It can be exhausting to work with these groups, but Madhuben is patient with them, and even before these women do, she begins to dream on their behalf! It is an honor to have team members like Madhuben.

The Narol settlement needs many interventions, and we shall continue pushing efforts here; the families also need a good pucca home to lead a better quality of life.

I am grateful to respected Shri Pratulbhai Shroff (Dr. K. R. Shroff Foundation) for supporting our Human Rights endeavors; the funds help us reach our families and pull them out of this circle of poverty.

એકલો વ્યક્તિ એની મર્યાદામાં નિયત ધ્યેય સુધી પહોંચી શકે પણ જ્યારે એ જૂથ કે સંગઠનનો હિસ્સો બની જાય અને આ સંગઠનની દિશા નક્કી થઈ જાય તો પછી તો પુછવુ જ શું?

નારોલમાં રહેતા અમારા સરાણિયા બહેનોએ પણ સંગઠનની દિશામાં ડગ માંડ્યા.

આમ તો સરાણિયા પુરુષો  છરી -ચપ્પુની ધાર કાઢવાનું કામ કરે. એ એમનો પરંપરાગત વ્યવસાય. જો કે હવે એ વ્યવસાયમાં ઝાઝુ મળતર નથી એટલે ઘણાએ વ્યવસાય બદલ્યા પણ ખરા.

પણ નારોલ એટલે કે અમદાવાદ શહેરમાં રહેવાના કારણે આ સમુદાયની બહેનો ભંગાર, પ્લાસ્ટીક ભેગુ કરવાનું ઘણા વખતથી શીખી અને એ કામ એ કરે. એ માટે વહેલી સવારે એ ખભે કોથળો લઈને નીકળી પડે. 

ખભા પર ભંગાર વીણવાનું કામ કરતી આ બહેનોની જીંદગી બહુ હાડમારીવાળી. એમણે કહ્યું, લોનની સગવડ થાય તો અમે પેડલ રીક્ષા લઈએ તો પગે ચાલવાનું ઓછુ થાય ને ઘણો ભંગાર ભેગો કરી શકીએ.

અમારે તો આ બધાને બે પાંદડે કરવા જ છે. વળી આ વર્ષથી બહેનોના સંગઠન બનાવવું પણ અમે કરી રહ્યા છીએ. જેથી બહેનો એક જૂથમાં નાના મોટા વ્યવસાય કરતી થાય. તેમના પ્રશ્નોના સમાધાન પણ કરતી થાય ને અમે એમને ટેકો પણ કરી શકીએ.

નારોલમાં પણ બહેનોએ પોતાના જૂથો બનાવવા અમને નિમંત્રણ આપ્યું. ને જે બહેન જૂથ સાથે સંકળાય એને પેડલ રીક્ષા માટે લોન આપવા પણ એમણે વિનંતી કરી. આવી સરસ સમજણવાળી બહેનો હોય તો અમારે તો કામ કરવાનું જ હોય. એટલે લોન આપવાનું તો કરીશું જ.. સાથે વસાહતમાંથી પંદર વીસ બાળકો અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા મૂકવાનું પણ કેટલાક વાલીઓએ કહ્યું. જો કે વાલીઓ કહે તે પહેલા બાળકો એમના વાલીઓને અમારા સભા સ્થળે લઈ આવ્યા અને કહ્યું, દીદી આ મારી મા એને કહ્યો મને હોસ્ટેલમાં મુકે. મજાના ટબુ઼ડિયા..

ઘણા વર્ષે આ વસાહતમાં ગઈ પણ કાગડોળે સૌ રાહ જોતા હતા.

અમારા કાર્યકર મધુબહેન એકદમ બહાદુર બહેન. આ પરિવારો સાથે બેઠક એમાંય બહેનો સાથે કરીએ તો ગળાની દશા બેસી જાય. મૂળ બહેનોને બહુ બધુ બોલી લેવું હોય ને એટલે. આવામાં મધુબહેન ધીરજથી બધાને સમજાવે.. એમની આંખો આ બહેનો આગળ વધે તે સ્વપ્ન આ બહેનો જુએ એ પહેલા જોવા માંડે..

આવા કાર્યકર અમારી સાથે હોવાનું ગર્વ છે... 

નારોલની આ વસાહતમાં ઘણું કામ કરવાનું છે ને એ કરીશું.. ઘરના પણ પ્રશ્નો છે એ બધુયે ઉકેલીશું. આદરણીય પ્રતુલભાઈ શ્રોફ (ડો.કે.આર.શ્રોફ ફાઉન્ડેશન) નો આભાર માનુ છું. એમણે આ પરિવારોના માનવ અધિકારના કાર્યો માટે અમને મદદ કરી.

We don’t know if mystical Parasmani was for real or a fable; we have all heard about this alchemist who turned anything he touched in gold.  None of us have seen this fabled Parasmani, but one that we know for sure is water.  Anything water touches comes to life. 

We can claim that water is the alchemist we have seen.

But the alchemist we know is under tremendous pressure and deep trouble.  Our groundwater reserves are drying up at unprecedented speed. So it is a matter of concern if we could hand over to our coming generations water-sufficient earth. 

Humans have yet to crack the formula to make water, so they must respect the need to use it judiciously.  And by deepening lakes, VSSM is working towards creating water banks.

We were recently in Banaskantha’s Varan village, and everyone, including the local leaders, was concerned about falling water levels.  To address such concerns, VSSM works in partnership with the community, where the cost of JCB  to dig out the soil/deepen the lake is supported by  VSSM while the community lifts the excavated soil.  These efforts in partnership with the local community, are focused on catching as much rainwater as one can.

We must create as many reservoirs as we can.

The communities of Banaskantha have woken up to the call; hopefully, other regions also wake up to this alarm .

સાચુ ખોટુ તો નથી ખબર પણ પારસમણીની વાતો આપણે સૌએ સાંભળી છે. કહે છે કે, પારસમણી લોખંડને અડકે તો લોખંડ સોનુ બની જાય..

જેની વાતો સાંભળી છે એ પારસમણી તો અત્યાર સુધી દીઠો નથી પણ એક પારસમણી મે અને તમે સૌએ જોયું છે. એ છે પાણી.. પાણી ધરતી પર પડે ને બજંર જમીન પણ જીવંત થઈ જાય.

આમ આપણે જોયેલું પારસમણી એટલે પાણી એવું ચોક્કસ કહી શકાય.

પણ પાણી રૃપી પારસમણી અત્યારે જોખમકારક પરિસ્થિતિમાં મુકાયું છે. તળમાંથી પાણી ખુટી રહ્યા છે. આપણી ભાવી પેઢીને આપણે પાણીના સાબદા તળ આપી શકીશું કે કેમ તે પણ મોટો ચિંતાનો વિષય છે.

વળી કહે છે ને પાણીને બનાવી નથી શકાતુ માટે એને સાચવીને વાપરવાનું.

અમે સાચવીને વાપરવાનું તો કરીએ સાથે પાણીની મજબૂત બેંક ઊભી થાય તે માટે તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાના કાર્યો પણ કરીએ.

બનાસકાંઠાના વરણગામમાં હમણાં જવાનું થયું. સૌને તળના પાણી ઊંડા જઈ રહ્યા છે એની ચિંતા છે માટે ગામલોકો માટી ઉપાડવાનું કરે છે અને અમે તળાવ ખોદવા જેસીબી આપીયે છીએ. આમ સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી વરસાદ વરસે તેને ઝીલવા તળાવ રૃપી વાસણ તૈયાર કરીએ છીએ.

ગામમાં વધારે માત્રામાં તળાવો થાય તે આજની જરૃર છે..

બનાસકાંઠામાં લોકો જાગ્યા છે. અન્ય વિસ્તારમાં પણ આવી જાગૃતિની જરૃર છે..

વરણનું તળાવ ખોદવામાં અમને મહેન્દ્ર બ્રધર્સએ સહયોગ કર્યો તે માટે તેમની આભારી છું. આદરણીય વિક્રમભાઈ, સોનકભાઈ અને તેમના પરિવારજનના સૌ પ્રત્યે કૃતજ્ઞતા વ્યક્ત કરુ છું..

The water tables have dropped from 1000 to 1200 feet. If this continues, we will have to leave farming!”  The farmers of Vaasan village of Banaskantha’s Lakhani block shared with a heavy heart.

The uncontrolled practice of drilling borewells led to unceasing groundwater exploitation, leading to underground water table depletion. It would not be an exaggeration to say that we have dug our graves.

If we had woken up earlier and tried to conserve the rainwater, the water situation would not have been this abysmal. However, as they say, it is better late than never; if we wake up (in huge numbers) and pledge to conserve each drop of rainwater, we can reverse the looming water crisis.

For the past few years, VSSM has launched a participatory water management initiative in Banaskantha. The efforts have resulted in a deepening of 248 community lakes.

The lake of Vaasan is one of them. VSSM has also planted 16000 trees in this village, and what concerns us is getting enough water for these trees. There is hope of more trees bringing more rain, and the region is lush and green once again.

Apart from the rains, efforts from the government to bring Sardar Sarovar waters to Lakhani, Dhanera, Deesa regions will be immensely fruitful. The water in lakes will recharge the groundwater tables. 

VSSM’s team members Naranbhai, Maheshbhai, Hareshbhai, Ratnabhai work tirelessly and effectively to identify the villages and prepare them for the effort.

"અમારા ગામની જમીન અમે સોલારકંપનીઓને ભાડે આપી રહ્યા છીએ! તળમાં પાણી જ નથી શું કરવાનું? ગામના 281 બોરવેલ છેલ્લા બે વર્ષમાં ફેઈલ થઈ ગયા! પાણીના તળ 1000 થી લઈને 1200 ફૂટે પહોંચ્યા. જો આમ જ રહ્યું તો આગળના વર્ષોમાં અમારે ખેતી સાવ છોડવી પડશે."

બનાસકાંઠાના લાખણી તાલુકાના વાસણગામના ખેડૂતોએ ભારે હૈયે આ વાત કરી.

આમ તો બોરવેલ આવ્યા અને અમાપ પાણી જમીનમાંથી ઉલેચાયું એટલે ભૂગર્ભજળ ઊંડા ગયા. આમ આ બધી આફત આપણે પોતે જ સર્જી.

જો વેળાસર જાગ્યા હોત ને વરસાદી પાણીના ટીપે ટીપાને બચાવવાનું કર્યું હોત તો કદાચ આવી સ્થિતિ સાવ ન આવત.

ખેર પણ જાગ્યા ત્યારથી સવાર.. આપણે પાણીને સમજદારી પૂર્વક વાપરવાનું શરૃ કરીએ અને ખાસ ચોમાસામાં વરસતા વરસાદનું ટીપે ટીપુ બચાવીએ. આ નેમ જો લઈ શકીએ તો સ્થિતિ સુધરી શકે એમ છે.

અમે બનાસકાંઠામાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું પાછલા કેટલાક વર્ષોથી કરીએ. અત્યાર સુધી 248 થી વધુ તળાવો અમે ઊંડા કરી ચુક્યા છીએ.

આ વર્ષે વાસણનું તળાવ પણ ગામની ભાગીદારીથી ઊંડુ કર્યું. લોકોએ માટી ઉપાડવાનું કામ કર્યું. 

વાસણગામમાં અમે 16000 જેટલા વૃક્ષો પણ વાવ્યા છે. ચિંતા આ વૃક્ષોને પાણી મળી રહે એની છે. પણ કુદરત ધ્યાન રાખશે. વધારે વૃક્ષો થશે તો વરસાદ પણ આવશે ને આ પ્રદેશ પાછો પાણીદાર થશે.

વરસાદ સિવાય સરકાર નર્મદાના પાણી પણ લાખણી, ધાનેરા, ડીસા વિસ્તારમાં કોઈક રીતે પહોંચાડે. તળાવો ભરાવે તે પણ જરૃરી. 

અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ, મહેશભાઈ, હરેશભાઈ, રત્નાભાઈ સૌની પણ આમાં ભારે મહેનત. ગામોને શોધવા, તળાવ માટે તૈયાર કરવાનું કામ એ બખૂબી કરે. 

આશા રાખીએ સૌનું શુભ થશેની.. 

તળાવ ગળાવવાના કાર્યમાં અમને મદદ કરનાર સ્વજનોના આભારી છીએ.

A brief report pulished on VSSM's water conservation 
effort in Navgujarat Samay

For over five years, VSSM has been creating water shrines/repairing the community water bodies in Banaskantha. The number of lakes deepened has reached 228; after this season's end, we will have deepened 260 lakes. A mammoth task made possible due to the support we have received from our well-wishing donors.

This year even the government has helped us create water shrines in Sabarkantha's Poshina and Mehsana's Visnagar regions. I am thankful to Cabinet Minister Respected Shri Rushikeshbhai Patel, who is like an elder brother to me, for ensuring the water conservation efforts in the areas are covered under the Sujalam Sufalam Abhiyan.

Sadly, we could not cover the Banaskantha efforts under the Sujalam Sufalam initiative. Had the government agreed to partner with VSSM, we could have deepened more lakes.

Well, at times, it is difficult to understand the governmental nitty-gritty. On the one hand, we specially get called to participate in the meeting Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel calls for water management; there were detailed discussions with the officials who agreed to partner and take the work forward, only not to allot us work later. Some bitter truths we encounter during the course of our work.

The groundwater tables in North Gujarat have dropped to alarming levels, it is organizations like us who spend their funds and government authorities should consider partnering with us.

I hope we all wake up to the looming crisis. The rural communities are becoming proactive, hope the government, especially the officials, also comprehends this at the earliest.

બનાસકાંઠામાં જલમંદિર નિર્માણ કાર્ય ઘણા વર્ષથી કરીયે. 228 તળાવ અત્યાર સુધી ઊંડા કર્યા અને આ સીઝનમાં 260નો આંકડો પાર કરીશું. ઘણા બધા સ્વજનોની મદદથી આ કાર્ય થયું.

આ વર્ષે તો સરકારે પણ સાબરકાંઠાના પોશીના વિસ્તારમાં અને મહેસાણાના વીસનગરમાં જલમંદિર થાય એ માટે મદદ કરી. સુજલામ સુફલામ અભિયાન અંતર્ગત તળાવો આ બે જિલ્લામાં  ઊંડા થાય તે માટે આદરણીય અને મારા મોટાભાગ જેવા માનનીય મંત્રી શ્રી ઋષીકેશભાઈ પટેલે ઘણી મદદ કરી. તેમની આભારી છું.

જો કે બનાસકાંઠામાં અમને સુજલામ સુફલામ અંતર્ગત કામ ન મળ્યું એનુ દુઃખ પણ છે. સરકાર પૈસા ખર્ચે છે VSSM સાથે આ વિસ્તારમાં તળાવ ઊંડા કરવામાં ભાગીદારી કરી હોત તો અમે થોડા વધારે તળાવ કરી શક્યા હોત..

ખેર ક્યારેક આ સરકારી માથાકૂટ નથી સમજાતી. એક બાજુ રાજ્યના મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી ભુપેન્દ્રભાઈ પટેલની અધ્યક્ષતામાં જળસંચય સંદર્ભે મીટીંગ થાય ત્યાં અમને ખાસ બોલાવવામાં આવે. અધિકારીગણ સાથે કામો સંદર્ભે બધી વાતો થાય. ત્યારે અધિકારી હા પણ પાડે પણ પછી કામ જ ન આપે.. આ કડવી વાસ્તવીકતા છે..

ઉત્તર ગુજરાતમાં ભૂગર્ભજળ ભયજનક સ્થિતિએ પહોંચ્યા છે. ત્યારે અમારા જેવી સંસ્થાઓ જે સાચા મનથી પોતાના ગાંઠના ખર્ચતી હોય તેની સાથે તો ભાગીદારી અવશ્ય કરવી જોઈએ..

ખેર સવેળા સૌ જાગે એ ઈચ્છનીય. બાકી ગ્રામજનો પોતે હવે જાગ્યા છે. ત્યારે સરકાર ખાસ કરીને અધિકારીગણ સમજે એ જરૃરી...

નવગુજરાત સમયે જળસંચયના અમે કરેલા કાર્યોને સરસ કવર કર્યું એ માટે આભારી છું.

Trees are those supreme beings the human race has failed to respect. They are those gentle giants who give unconditionally. Life will cease to exist in their absence. The impact of global warming and climate change can be tackled if we increase the earth’s green cover, but we aren’t doing enough. The rampant cutting of trees to make space for the growing population continues while the efforts to plant new trees are meagre. Institutions and individuals concerned about the environment are struggling to find ways to protect and grow more trees. VSSM also shares those concerns.

To find a solution to this grave issue, VSSM launched a campaign to make the arid and parched landscape of Banaskantha green by planting and raising trees on wastelands, cemeteries, graveyards, etc. In 2019, we planted 3000 trees in the cemetery of Dhedhal village with a pledge to submit them all. Gradually the campaign set rolling and has taken wings now. By 2022 we reached 91 villages, and 129 sites to plant trees, 1000 to 15,000 in numbers. Today our collective efforts are raising 4.72 trees. VSSM appoints a Vriksh Mitra on each tree plantation site and forms a Vriksh Mandli consisting of proactive local community members. Recently we organized a combined meeting of Vriksh Mitra, Vriksh Mandli, and other dedicated individuals at Banaskantha’s Jetda village. We discussed the difficulties faced in raising the trees, exchanged the learnings, and discussed the selection of new sites for the plantation of trees in 2023. Growing trees is like raising children, it can be challenging, but if we put in collective and persistent efforts, the results are incredible.

Trees become home to thousands of life; let us pledge to join hands and grow as many such homes as possible.

વૃક્ષ અમે એને જીવતો જાગતો દેવ કહીએ.. એ વણ માંગે ઢગલો આપે.. પણ આ દેવને જોઈએ એવું સન્માન આપણે આપતા નથી.

અને આ દેવ વગર જીવન શક્ય નથી. હાલ આપણી ધરતી ગરમ થઈ રહી છે. વાતાવરણમાં જબરજસ્ત પલટો આવી રહ્યો છે. ટૂંકમાં અસમાન્ય ઘટનાઓ ખાસ કરીને વાતાવરણને લઈને બની રહી છે. આ વાતાવરણને સમતુલીત કરવાનું કામ માત્ર વૃક્ષો કરી શકે. પણ આપણે એના પ્રત્યે ઉદાસની છે.

દિવસે દિવસે વૃક્ષો કાપવાનું પ્રમાણ વધ્યું છે એની સામે વૃક્ષો વાવવાનું જોઈએ તેવું થતું નથી.

શું કરવું એ પ્રશ્ન પર્યાવરણની ચિંતા કરનાર સૌ સેવે. અમે - VSSM પણ સેવે.

ને સમાધન રૃપે બનાસકાંઠાની બંજર જમીન તેમજ સ્મશાનમાં વૃક્ષો વાવી ઉછેરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. 

2019માં ઢેઢાલ ગામના સ્મશાનમાં 3000 વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા એ પણ ઉછેરવાના સંકલ્પ સાથે એ પછી તો અમારુ વૃક્ષ ઉછેર અભીયાન ભાંખડીયા ભરવા માંડ્યું ને હાલ તો એને પગ આવી ગયા. 

2022 સુધીમાં 91 ગામની કુલ 129 સાઈટ પર 1000 થી લઈને 15,000 સુધી વૃક્ષો વાવી ઉછેરી રહ્યા છીએ. હાલમાં કુલ 4.72 લાખ વૃક્ષો ઉછરી રહ્યા છે.

આ વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા  માટે દરેક સાઈટ પર અમે વૃક્ષોમિત્રોની નિમણૂક કરીએ.  સાથે ગામના સક્રિય વ્યક્તિઓની અમે વૃક્ષમંડળીઓ બનાવીએ. 

આ વૃક્ષમિત્રો તેમજ વૃક્ષમંડળી સાથે સંકળાયેલા પ્રિયજનોની બેઠક બનાસકાંઠાના જેતડાગામે આયોજીત કરી. જેમાં વાવેલા વૃક્ષોના જતન માટે શું ધ્યાન રાખીએ. ક્યાં તકલીફો છે વગેરે બાબતે વિસ્તારથી ચર્ચા થઈ. 

સાથે વર્ષ 2023માં વધારે વૃક્ષો વાવવા સંદર્ભે નવા ગામો, જગ્યાઓ શોધવાની પણ ચર્ચા થઈ.

સૌ સાથે મળી પ્રયત્ન કરીએ તો વૃક્ષો વાવી ઉછેરવા મુશ્કેલ નથી. બસ જરૃર પ્રયત્નની છે..

વૃક્ષો હજારો જીવોનું ઘર છે. આ જીવોને આશરો આપવાનું કામ ઘણું મોટુ.

બસ સાથે જોડાજો તો વધુ કાર્ય કરી શકીશું.

જેતડા રામજીમંદીરમાં બેઠકનું આયોજન કરી આપવા બદલ ડો. મેહુલભાઈનો ઘણો આભાર. અલબત બેઠક પછી એમણે ભાવનું ભોજન પણ કરાવ્યું.

To understand how precious water is, ask people with the least access to it.

Kutch’s Rapar is a water-starved region. The scarcity was not for drinking water alone; even water for domestic use was a scarce commodity. So people would not bathe for days. And when they decided to clean, they would sit over a charpoy with a large container underneath it to collect the bathing water and reuse it for watering the trees and rinsing the cooking vessels.

However, the drinking water issues have been largely resolved with the Narmada waters reaching remote Kutch. Nonetheless, water for agriculture remains a concern.

Since 2015, VSSM has worked to deepen the community lakes in North Gujarat. Until now, it had been Banaskantha; beginning this year, we have also extended the efforts to Patan, Mehsana, and Sabarkantha districts.

We began lake deepening work in Banaskantha’s Mudetha with the support of Mahendra Brothers and the local community. The villagers think that the depth of the lake should be increased. If the government wishes to become a partner, we would collectively achieve a very positive outcome. 

We are happy that more and more communities are becoming increasingly aware of water issues. We hope our collective efforts work wonders in raising the groundwater tables and filling our water reservoirs.

જ્યાં નથી ત્યાં પુછો પાણીની શું કિંમત છે...

વાત નાનકડી પણ અગત્યની. પાણીની મુશ્કેલીની એક વાત કોઈએ કરેલી.

કચ્છનો રાપર વિસ્તાર. પહેલાં પાણીને લઈને ઘણી તકલીફ વેઠતો. પીવાના પાણીની પણ મુશ્કેલી. લોકો નિયમીત નાહવા ધોવાનું ન કરે. અને જ્યારે નાહવાનું કરે ત્યારે ખાટલામાં બેસી સ્નાન કરે અને ખાટલા નીચે મોટુ વાસણ રાખે જેથી નાહ્યાનું પાણી એ વાસણમાં ભરાય જેને ઘર આગળ કરેલા વૃક્ષો કે વાસણ ધોવા માટે વપરાતા બે પાણીમાંથી એક પાણી માટે વાપરી શકાય.

પાણીની આ મુશ્કેલીમાંથી આજે મા રેવા(નર્મદા) આવવાના લીધે ઘણી રાહત થઈ છે. છતાં સંપૂર્ણ રાહત થઈ છે તેવું ન કહી શકાય. કદાચ પીવાનું પાણી આપણને સમયસર મળે પણ ખેતીલાયક પાણીની સ્થિતિ અંગે વિચારવા જેવું.

અમે ઉત્તર ગુજરાતમાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાના કાર્યો કરીએ. બનાસકાંઠામાં 2015થી ગામની ભાગીદારીથી તળાવો કરીએ. આ વર્ષે આ અભિયાન ફક્ત બનાસકાંઠા પુરતુ સમિતિ ન રાખતા પાટણ, મહેસાણા અને સાબરકાંઠામાં પણ જલમંદિરો બાંધી આગળ વધાર્યું. 

બનાસકાંઠાનું મુડેઠા. ત્યાં અમે મહેન્દ્રબ્રધર્સ અને ગ્રામજનોની ભાગીદારીથી તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. ગામના ખેડૂતોની લાગણી તળાવનું કામ વધારે ઊંડુ થાય એવી હતી. જો સરકાર આ કાર્યમાં ભાગીદારી કરે તો સંસ્થા, સરકાર, ગ્રામજનોની ભાગીદારીથી સરસ કામ થઈ શકે. 

પણ આનંદ હવે ગામો પાણી માટે જાગૃત થયા એનો છે.. બસ પાણીને લઈને ખુબ કામ થાય તેમ ઈચ્છીએ જેથી આપણી પાણી બેંક વર્ષો પહેલાં ભરાયેલી હતી તેવી રહે...
