 Meer Community expresses his issues with Mittal Patel

“We worship the Goddess and believe in Allah. We have equal respect for both,  we cannot do without revering our Goddess nor can we live without praying to Allah!!”

We are Meer Barot, we are the traditional genealogists to Rabari community and have always traveled with them. We could be found living in parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan but, we have no identity proofs from any of these regions.

The Current living conditions of Meer

“The government refuses to include us in the list of nomadic communities inspite of the fact that our ancestors have always lived wandering life on this land, with their house-holds loaded  on the donkeys they have kept moving all the time! So why can we be included in the list, Ben?”

These is the basic matter that confuses the Meer community. Since past many years, the Meer have been requesting their inclusion in the list of nomadic communities, the request I support and strongly recommend.

‘અમે દેવીને પુજીએને અલ્લાહનેય માનીએ. માતાજીને પગે લાગ્યા વના અમને ના ચાલે તો અલ્લાહની બંદગી વગરેય ના ચાલે. અમારે તો બેય હરખા.

અમે એટલે મીર બારોટ. રબારીઓની વંશાવળી લખનારા ને ઈમની કેડે કેડે ફરનારાં. રાજસ્થાન અને ગુજરાતમાં અમે રહીએ. પણ અમારી ઓળખ ચોયની નહીં.

સરકાર કેસે વિચરતી જાતિમાં તમે નથી તે હે બેન અમારા ઘૈડિયાતો ગધાડાં લઈન આજે ઓય ને કાલે પણે ઈમ ફરતાજ રયા તોય અમે ચમ વિચરતીમાં નહીં.....’

મીરનો આ પ્રશ્ન.... અમે કેમ વિચરતીમાં નહીં. વિચરતી જાતિની યાદીમાં અમને મુકોની માંગ મીર સમાજની.... ને મારો એને ટેકો...

We are coming together in Palanpur on October 14th 2017 to let the world know that we exist. The number of people arriving is going to be huge for sure. Such a measure of gathering calls for some advance planning and preparation. The organizers are nomadic and de-notified communities, hence there had to be some distribution of responsibilities!!

We held a meeting in Deesa to assign responsibilities to the community leaders of Patan and Banaskantha. The prolonged discussion was followed by deciding on the agenda for that day. We announced that those willing to take responsibility can stay back while others may leave and come at the venue on 14th. There were around 150+ leaders present in the meeting, we were hoping that 40-50 of them would stay back but, to our utter surprise not a single person stood up to leave!! We changed our seating arrangement and went in the corner so that we could have more focused discussion within a smaller group  but all of them overwhelmed us with the requests to assign responsibilities. “You do not worry about my community, we are all coming!” we were assured by each of them!!

Such overwhelming response means that these communities are tired, they are tired of waiting for these never-ending delays to come to an end. They are eager to talk about the little efforts that are required to change their lives for better!! They will not be opposing or agitating, they are gathering  to make everyone realize that they too exist….  

 ‘અમે પણ છીએ’

કહેવા 14મીએ પાલનપુર ભેગા થવાના. મોટી સંખ્યામાં લોકો આવવાના એ નક્કી. વ્યવસ્થા અને આયોજન મોટુ. વળી નિમંત્રક અને આયોજન કરનાર તમામ વિચરતી વિમુક્ત જાતિ એટલે જવાબદારીની વહેંચણી પણ કરવાની.

ડીસામાં પાટણ અને બનાસકાંઠામાં રહેતા વિચરતી વિમુક્ત જાતિના આગેવાનો જવાબદારીની વહેંચણી માટે ભેગા થયા. લાંબી ચર્ચા પછી શું કરીશુંની વાત કરી, જેને જવાબદારી લેવી ને નિભાવવી હોય એ બેસે બાકીના વ્યક્તિઓને 14મીએ મળીશું એમ કહીને જવા કહ્યું. દોઢસો કરતાં વધુ આગેવાન ઉપસ્થિત હતા. અમને હતુ કે, ચાલીસ પચાસ માણસ બેસસે પણ આ તો જબરૃ થયું એકેય આગેવાન હલ્યા નહીં. અમે જગ્યા બદલી. એક બાજુ ખુણામાં જઈને બેઠા તો ત્યાંય વીંટળાઈને, ‘અમને કો અમે શું કરીએ. બાકી મારી નાતની ચિંતા તમે છોડી દો એતો આખી આબ્બાની.’

થાક્યા છે લોકો એટલે કોઈના વિરોધ માટે નહીં પણ અમને શાંતિથી જીવવા નાની મદદ કરોની વાત કરવા તત્પર થયા છે... સ્વયં ભૂ દરેક વ્યક્તિ પોતાનો આગેવાન લો બોલો છે ને મજાની વાત....

Amrutbhai dreams of building a house of his dreams, a dream that seems to be impossible to realize with the marginal means he had and no support not even from the government has reached him ever.

“It is my fate that is at fault… I made so many rounds to seek some help to be able to build a small room, I am 50 and very recently received my first ration card that too an APL card with just my name and the names of my family members missing from it. I was hoping that i get  BPL ration so that i will get us some food

sufficiency but APL_card  was not issued only gets me some kerosene and that too on a fixed day. If you fail to appear at the PDS store on that day you do not get your share of kerosene for the entire month..” when Amrutbhai Rawal from Radhanpur’s Devpura village was sharing his plight, 83 years old Lakhudada joined in to narrate his agony. “I am towards the end of my life and I am still waiting for a house…” and 35 years old Dhanji had a similar story to share !!

The poor do not dream of riches like them, their dreams are also frugal yet, the policy makers and officials find it difficult to help them realize these dreams.

અમૃતભાઈ રાવળની અપેક્ષા એક બંગલા બને ન્યારાની. 

જો કે બંગલો બનાવી શકવાની સગવડ નહીં ને કોઈની મદદ(સરકારની) આજ સુધી પાકી ઓરડી માટેય મળી નહીં.

‘ઓયડા માટે કેટલા ધોડા કર્યા પણ હાહરુ કરમમાં જ નઈ. પચા વરસે રેશનકેડ મલ્યું. ઈમાંય મારા એકલાનું જ નોમ લસઈન આયું. હેડો ઘર ના થ્યું તે કોય નઈ બીપીએલ રેશનકેડ મલશે તો ખાવા ધોન તો મલશે. પણ આલ્યુ એપીએલ કેડ. નકરુ કેરોસીન મલ. એય પાસુ નક્કી કરેલા દાડે જ. એ દાડો જ્યો તો કેરોસીનેય ના મલ..’ રાધનપુર તાલુકાના દેવપુરાગામના અમૃતભાઈ રાવળની આ વાત ચાલતી હતી ત્યાં એંસી વર્ષના લખુદાદાએ કહ્યું, ‘આખી જીંદગી ગઈ પણ પાકુ ઘર ના મલ્યું’ પાંત્રીસ વર્ષના ધનજીની પણ આજ કહાની. 

ગરીબોના સપનાં મહેલ જેવડા નથી. મુઠ્ઠીમાં સમાય એવડા સપના પુરા કરવાનું અઘરુ ક્યાં પડે છે એ સમજાતું નથી... 

દેવપુરા રાવળ સમાજ સાથે બેઠક કરી ને અમૃતભાઈ, લખુદાદા, ઘનજીને બીજા કેટલાયે એમના ઘરે આવવા આગ્રહ કર્યો ને એમણે જે બતાવ્યું તે અહીંયા મુક્યુ....

It was one those regular visits to the settlements when I chanced upon taking a tractor ride to Benavas in a tractor driven by Lalabhai Raval. On the way back, Lalabhai began talking but I observed he was talking in a different manner may be because of the tobacco he had stuffed in his mouth. I am against such addictions and tend to breakout in to a lecture when I find people wasting their health and money to such nuisances.

“Lalabhai, you are such wonderful human being, this habit of chewing tobacco does not suit you!!”

As if Lalabhai was waiting for my sermon, the tractor came to a sudden halt, Lalabhai got off it and took out all the tobacco packets he had in the pocket.

“Ben, you told me to leave tobacco and I am giving it up… I do not want to do anything that you do not approve!!”

I was delighted at his instant action but there was a feeling of apprehension as well giving up addictions is not an easy task. People commit to it in the spur of moment but usually fail hold up to that commitment. Honestly, I was expecting the same with Lalabhai!!!

After 20 days, I was again required to go to Benavas and once again got to meet Lalabhai. It was very natural for me pop up the question, “So, could you give up your tobacco addiction??”

“Yes Ben. Thank god you told me to give up the addiction. I have saved daily expense of Rs. 40-50 and the damage it did to my health. How can I make a wrong promise to you, Ben? That day was the last time I took tobacco…. Now it is going to be never ever!!

Once again, I was required to take a ride on his tractor to reach my destination but, this time there was a kind of #satisfaction and joy. Sometimes I do wonder should I keep on playing the normal ‘don’t take tobacco, gutka, or smoke bidi’ etc etc.. talks, does it make any difference but when we have someone like Lalabhai who was waiting for that nudge I feel, why not?

લાલાભાઈ રાવળ સાથે એમના ટ્રેક્ટરમાં બેસીને બેણાવાસમાં જવાનું થયું. બેણાવાસમાં રહેનારા તમામ સાથે બેઠક કરીને અમે ટ્રેક્ટરમાં પરત ફર્યા. લાલાભાઈએ ફરી વાતો શરૃ કરી પણ તેમના બોલવામાં થોડું જુદા પણુ લાગ્યું. મૂળ તો મોઢાંમાં નાખેલા તમાકુના કારણે આવું થઈ રહ્યાનું લાગ્યું. એમનું આવી રીતે તમાકુ ખાવું જરાય ગમ્યું નહીં. એટલે સાહજિક રીતે જ બોલાઈ ગયું, 

‘લાલાભાઈ તમે ખુબ સરસ માણસ છો આ તમાકુની લત તમને શોભતી નથી.’

આમ તો દરેક જગ્યાએ વ્યસન કરનારને જોવું ને અનાયાસે જ ભાષણ આપવાનું શરૃ કરી દઉ. એવું જ અહીંયા કર્યું. પણ મારુ બોલવાનું પુરુ થયું કે, તુરત ટ્રેક્ટર ચલાવતા ચલાવતા લાલાભાઈ ઊભા થયા ને ખીસ્સામાંથી તમાકુની કેટલીયે પડીકીઓ કાઢી ને, 

‘લો બેન તમે કીધુન તે આજથી મેલ્યું. તમન ના ગમે એવું એકેય કોમ નહીં કરવું.’

મન લાલાભાઈની વાતથી રાજી થયું મે હરખ વ્યક્ત કર્યો પણ વ્યસન છોડવું સહેલું નથી એવું બધા કહે એટલે મને લાગ્યું કદાચ લાલાભાઈથી નહીં છુટે... આજે ઉતાવળમાં આ કહી દીધું પણ...

આ વાત થયાના વીસેક દિવસ પછી પાછી બેણાવાસ ગઈ ને ફરી લાલાભાઈ મળ્યા.

‘શું થયું વ્યસનનું? છુટ્યું કે?’ આ પ્રશ્નના જવાબમાં એમણે કહ્યું, 

‘હા બેન હાવ ગ્યું. સારુ થ્યું તમે કીધુ તે, રોજના ચાલી – પચા રૃપિયાય બચ્યા ન તબીયતને નુકશોન થતું બચ્યું અને હા તમારી હોમે એક ફેરા મુચ્યુ તો મુચ્યુ હવ જીંદગીમાં ફરી કોય દાડો તમાકુ ન હાથ નઈ લાગડું. તમારી આગળ ખોટુ નીમ ના લેવાય...’

એમની સાથે ટ્રેક્ટરમાં ફેર બેસતા ફરી મન હરખાઈ ગયું..

ક્યારેક અનાયાસે કહેવાઈ ગયેલી વાતની કેવી સરસ અસર થાય છે એનું લાલાભાઈ ઉત્તમ ઉદાહરણ....

“Ben that house you see there, that is my house. Please come for tea.” He had met us just two minutes back, “How come you are here, you had send lot of aid to our village, am I correct, Ben??

His statement confused me, it was not us who had given them aid, we were merely instrumental in bringing them aid, we cannot be taking any credit for that!! My mind was busy with these thoughts when he said, “Ben, we have witnessed many such floods but, this time we have been helped a lot by everyone. I had gone to Madhi to get saplings for my farm. You know how far Madhi is, 200 kilometers from here almost near Vijapur. The guy selling saplings asked my village and when I said Khariya he told me he was at our village with a truck full of fodder for animals and so much more. That guy wasn’t a rich fellow. He had a very small farm but he worried about us when he read of Khariya in newspaper and reached us with all the help he could.” He was overwhelmed by such gestures of kindness and help reaching them during some of the most difficult times of their lives. The gratitude towards such acts of kindness could be seen on his face!!!

He could not believe that a small farmer from as far as 200 kilometers could think of showing such generosity… “my entire Banaskantha was here to help us and I am extremely grateful to everyone who did. It is because of you all that we have managed this crisis… did you know any of us?? Yet you decided to help us!! How can we not offer you tea??”

The Banas river between Khariya and Mota Jampur decided to go wild without warning anyone, that night it just decided to spread its span from 50 meters to 2 kilometers….as we were looking at the aftermath our eyes fell of the beautiful setting sun in the horizon and we decided to get down and take a picture of it to find Khariya’s Becharbhai Maharaj who with his touching narrative refreshed us even before we could have the tea he offered……

The beautiful aftermath of the good deeds and kind gestures by human kind during such challenging times have made such profound impact…

'બેન ચા પાણી પીશો? પણે દેખાય એ ઘર મારુ. આવો બેન.'
બસ બે મિનિટ પહેલા મળ્યા ત્યારે એમણે પૂછ્યું, 'કેમ આ બાજુ બેન? તમે અમારા ગામમાં સહાય આલેલી ને બેન?'
એમના આવું પૂછવાથી હું તો હા ના ની અસમઝમાં પડી. સહાય કોની ને કોણે આપી અમે તો નિમિત્ત હતા ને એમાં આમ જશ લઇ લેવાય?? આ ગડમથ ચાલતી હતી ત્યાં એ બોલ્યા...
'બેન પોણી તો પેલાય ઘણા આયા પણ આ ફેરા લોકોએ ખુબ સહાયતા કરી. હું મારા ખેતર માટે રોપા લેવા માઢી જ્યો તો બેન. માઢી ચેટલું સેટ પડ્યું? 200 કિલોમીટર થાય. ઠેક વિજાપુરની બાજુમો. પેલા રોપવાળાએ મન પુસ્યું ક, 'કાકા ચોના?' અન મેં કીધું ખારીયા. ઈને મન કીધું, 'અમે આયાતા ખારીયા. ઘાસ પૂળાની આઇસર ભરી ન. અન બીજુયે ઘણું લઈન' એ રોપાવાળો કોય મોટો જબરો પૈસાવાળો નતો. બે વિધા જમીનનો માલિક હતો પણ જુઓ અમારી ચિંતા કરીન ખારીયાનું છાપામો વોચીન ખારીયા આઇન ઈને મદદ આલી. આ વાત કરતા કરતા સખત અહોભાવ એમના મોઢા પર જણાતો હતો.
અને સૌથી અગત્યનું ઠેઠ 200 કિલોમીટર દૂરથી અને એય પાછો બે વિધા જમીનનો માલીક ગાડી ભરીને ઘાસ લઈને આવે એ એમના માનવામાં આવતું જ નહોતું.

'અમારું આખું બનાસકોઠા મદદ કરાવવાળા બધાનો આભાર મોનઅ. તમે બધા હોવ ન અમે બેઠા થઈયે નકર.... તમે બધા ચો ઓળખતાતા અમન? તોય મદદ કરીન? તો અમે ચા- પોણીમોથી તો ના જઇયે ન?'
ખારીયા અને મોટાજામપુરની વચમાં બનાસે ના કોઈ રણશિંગું ફૂંક્યું ના લડવાની તક આપી બસ એણે તો કાળી રાતમાં પોતાનું સામ્રાજય 50 મીટરમાંથી વધારી બે કી.મી.નુંં કરી દીધું. આ જોઈ રહ્યા હતા ત્યાં સરસ સુર્યાસ્ત થઇ રહ્યાનું જોયું. ને એનો ફોટો પાડવા નીચે ઊતર્યાને ખારીયાના બેચરભાઈ મહારાજનું ચાનું આમંત્રણ મળ્યું ને ચા પીધા વગર ટેસ કરાવી દે એવી અદભુત વાત એમણે કરી...

Police Again severely mutilates innocent Dafers... Dafer Atrocity - a common phenomenon

“Ben, these police are after us, asking us to surrender the weapons we have. How are we supposed to have weapons? Do they think we have opened a weapon manufacturing unit?? My husband died when my son Noor was 10 years old, since that day we have not spent a single day around the boundaries. Since past 25 years have been living in Kalawar. Both, my son and I have been working as laborers to make living. We go wherever work takes us, if we get work on farms we go there but not to loot, rob or hunt, that is not what we do!! Yet, since last four days the Kalawar police officials have been visiting our house every evening. They are threatening Noor Mohammad and his wife, asking them to surrender the weapons they have…. Earlier it was just the weapons now they are asking for my son. Have I raised him for them? Noor’s wife objected and stood up against the police to which they got furious, hit her so hard that her face has swollen. They are talking rubbish, talking filthy and abusing us which is difficult to listen. We are innocent, we have no such thing as weapon and nothing of the sort they are asking for!! Help us from the police wrath, Ben! If it does not stop we will have to commit suicide… We are poor but, we live in a decent locality and the police reaching here every day is ruining our image…” a very painful appeal from Rehmatben.

“The police do not understand; what will we do weapons when we work in city!!” said Noor as matter of fact…

Rehmatben desires to live a simple life and the police is not allowing them to live in peace. The family has no previous police records, has been living a decent life and the police thinks otherwise.

I fail to understand why police behaves in such a manner, go get a warrant and search but, they do have other tactics they come with a weapon in their vehicle and ask for men…I don’t know what instructions they have received from #Gandhinagar…. We have always told the police force, have a dialogue with us, we will help you find the ones involved in unlawful activities, but please stop harassing the innocent Dafer….

This is not a request or a humble appeal, this is our anger speaking now….

Nagla, Dodgam & Khanpur - Then during Flood 2015 & in 2017 | No positive different

We first had the opportunity of meeting Nagjibhai during a farmer congregation organized to address the issue of non-removal of flood waters from the villages of Khanpur, Nagla and Doda. This was about the water that had flooded these villages in 2015. Nagjibhai, a lively and positive individual had participated in the gathering. The boundaries of these villages were under 10 feet water for last 8 months and the government had payed to attention to their repeated requests.

After the meeting was over, Nagjibhai invited us for tea. “I cannot invite you to my home, so have had to bring you to this tea joint... Oh yes but I can offer you a joy ride over my raft!!” said Nagjibhai. We could not comprehend his statement. Why would he offer us a raft-ride, what was raft doing here?? But later when he showed us his house on the other side of the water it all made sense. He had made a make-shift raft to pay a daily visit to his house. The waters that had refused to flow away and which the government had made no efforts to drain had stopped the access to his house.

“How much losses have you suffered?” we inquired as we chatted.

“Close to a crore!” we were shocked on hearing the figure. How can someone be so calm after suffering such huge financial blow? “I must have had some dues remaining to be paid to nature...!” he had laughed it off.

Subsequently, over the period of time there was a lot of agitation, the farmers had gone on a hunger strike and their repeated appeals to the government resulted in some action to drain out the water.

The recent floods have again drenched this region and once again these villages are submerged under water.  A day before the disaster struck we had met at Tharad to talk about the ‘still waters that refused to go’ and the ‘government that refused to act’ and had decided to head over to Gandhinagar and the very next day the news that Nagla, Khanpur and Doda villages are under water reached us.

We had to find courage to call up Nagjibhai, his condition was a foregone conclusion but, four days later we spoke to him, “I have told our Chief Minister, how long can we live on charity, think about some long-term plans to resolve this condition because, we cannot live through these  frequent losses!!”

There was a news in the local dailies yesterday of our Chief Minister ordering removal of water within next 24 hours. We all know how things work in government, concrete results should be expected once there are concrete actions in this direction, otherwise…

This is not just about Nagjibhai here. Most farmers in the region are suffering the same plight. This time Nagjibhai himself feels it is going to be difficult  for him to bear the losses.

The nomadic families can survive on charity but farmers like Nagjibhai… what will they do??

If the government cannot work out a permanent solution the only option left is rehabilitating these families to some other place!!

નાગજીભાઈ પટેલ ખાનપુરના જિંદાદીલ ખેડુત. પહેલીવાર ડોડોગામમાં આયોજીત ખાનપુર,નાગલા અને ડોડોગામના ખેડૂતોની સભામાં તેમને મળવાનું થયેલું. મૂળ તો 2015માં પડેલા વરસાદનું પાણી આ ત્રણે ગામની સીમમાં બે બે માથોડા ભરાયેલું પડ્યું હતું ને ચોમાસાના આઠ આઠ મહિના વિત્યા પછીએ એ પાણીના નિકાલની કોઈ વ્યવસ્થા થઈ નહોતી. એ સંદર્ભેની એ બેઠક હતી.

બેઠક પછી નાગજીભાઈએ પોતાના ત્યાં આવવા આમંત્રણ આપ્યું. અમે ગયા. ચા પીધી. પછી એમણે કહ્યું, ‘બારોબાર ચા પીવડાવી હો. મારા ઘેર પીવડાવી હકુ એવી હાલત નથી પણ હા તરાપાની શેર ચોક્કસ કરાવી શકુ.’ એમનું આવું બોલવું પહેલાં તો સમજાયું નહીં. વળી પાછો તરાપો અને એય આ વિસ્તારમાં? પણ પછી દૂર પાણીમાં ગરકાવ થયેલું ઘર બતાવ્યું ને એ ઘરે રોજ આંટો મારવા બનાવેલો તરાપો બતાવ્યો ત્યારે તરાપાનો ભેદ ખ્યાલ આવ્યો. 

વાત વાતમાં પુછ્યું કે, કેટલું નુકશાન થયું? ને એમણે કહ્યું લગભગ કરોડનું !

સાંભળીને અમે અવાક થઈ ગયા. કરોડનું નુકશાન પામેલો માણસ હસી શકે એજ આશ્ચર્યજનક. ‘હશે કુદરતના ઘેર ભરવાનું કોકો બાકી હશે’ એવું એમણે એ વખતે કહેલું.

તે પછી સરકારમાં પાણી ઉલેચાવા ખુબ રજૂઆત કરી, લોકો ઉપવાસ પર બેઠા ટૂંકમાં ઘણા વાના કર્યા ત્યારે જતાં પાણી ઉલેચાયું.

2017માં પુરના પાણી આ વિસ્તારમાં ફરી વળ્યા તેના આગલા દિવસે અમે પાણી નિકાલની ચિંતા માટે થરાદમાં મળ્યા હતા અને આ માટે ગાંધીનગર ભેગા થવાની વાત કરી ને બીજા દિવસે નાગલા, ખાનપુર અને ડોડગામ પાણીમાં હોવાના સમાચાર મળ્યા.

નાગજીભાઈને તો ફોન કરવાનોય જીવ ના ચાલ્યો. ખબર જ હતી તેમની દશાની. ચાર દિવસે વાત કરી. એમણે કહ્યું, મુખ્યમંત્રીને મે કહ્યું કે, ‘આમ મફતનું ક્યાં સુધી ખાઈશું. પાણી નિકાલનો કાયમી ઉકેલ લાવો. વારે ઘડીએ બેઠા થવાનું અમારાથી નથી થવાનું.’

ગઈ કાલે છાપામાં મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીએ આ ત્રણે ગામમાંથી ચોવીસ કલાકમાં પાણી ઉલેચવાની સૂચના આપ્યાનું વાંચ્યું. પણ આતો સરકાર કહેવાય.. મશીનરી ગોઠવાય અને કામ સરૃ થાય ત્યારે સાચુ બાકી... હરી હરી...

અહીંયા નાગજીભાઈની વાત મુકી છે પણ એમના જેવા ઘણાય ખેડુતોની દશા આ જ છે. નાગજીભાઈ ખુદ કહે એમ આ ફેરા બેઠા થવું અઘરુ છે... 

અમે જેમની સાથે કામ કરીએ તે વિચરતી જાતિના કેટલાક માણસો તો લોકો સામે હાથ લાંબો કરી લેશે પણ નાગજીભાઈ જેવા તો ............ 

પાણી નિકાલની કાયમી વ્યવસ્થા નહીં તો બીજે પુનઃવસન એ એક માત્ર જ ઉકેલ...

2015માં તેમના તરાપામાં બેઠા અને પછી ફોટો પણ પડાવેલો આજે એ બધુ પાછુ યાદ કરીને મુક્યું....

I usually do not share pictures that portray immense pain and sorrow. However, I felt the need to share this picture of Shantaben to express and share her pain. It is my humble request to all of you to refrain from building any other judgements….

“We do not want to continue living here, can’t you arrange for our settlement towards some higher grounds, Ben?? The floods of 2015 had left us in similar plight, we have stood up with great difficulties and the situation is once again the same this year… we were on that neem tree for so many days. We have just buried 200 quintals of grains and our dead cattle!! And look at this land we farmed on, see what water has done to it!! In 2015 the government had given machines to restore our land but this year no other support has come from them…” Shantaben Devipujak (Patni) and all the residents of Patniodha had similar plights to share. The pain of losing all they had was so terrible that most of these families were in tears while narrating their stories. Patni odha is a hamlet of Khariya village. And the village has been completely ravaged in the recent floods. The families have received no assistance from the government except some cash.

The flood waters gushed in with such intensity that the families could not manage to save their cattle that were tied in the yards. The poor lives drowned to death! The families did share the agonizing pictures of their dead animals…

These families have been finding it difficult to overcome the trauma, they are unable to sleep peacefully, water and the fear of it has taken away their peace. They have sent they elderly and children to stay with relatives. It feels certain that we need to shift them to another area because these poor families cannot repeatedly bear the brunt of nature.

VSSM is prepared to extend interest free loans for buying cattle and help them with repairs of their current homes. But the crucial task is to find alternate land to settle them… we will be talking to the government in this regard… Hope all of us can work together for this cause!!

આમ તો કોઈનો રડતો ફોટો મુકવો ગમે નહીં ને આવું મુકવુંય યોગ્ય માનું નહીં. પણ આજે જેમની વાત કરવી છે તેમાં શાંતાબહેને વ્યક્ત કરેલી લાગણી મુકવા પણ આ ફોટો મુકુ છું. આને જુદી રીતે ના લેવા સૌ સ્વજનોને વિનંતી....
‘અમારે અહીંયા નથી રહેવું બેન, બીજે ક્યાંક ઊંચાણે વસાવવાનું ના કરી હકો? 2015ના પુરમાંય આવી જ દશા થયેલી તે માંડ માંડ ઊભા થ્યા ને ફરી 2017માં. તણ દાડા લીમડા માથે બેસી રયા. 200 મણ અનાજ આંય દાટ્યું ને ચાર ભેંસોય! ખેતીની અમારી જમીન તો તમે જોઈન શું હાલ કર્યા પોણીએ? 2015માં તો જમીન હરખી કરવા સરકારે મશીન આલ્યાતા પણ આ ફેરા તો કોય નહીં...’
ખારિયાનું પરુ પટણીઓઢા. એમાં રહેતા શાંતાબહેન દેવીપૂજક(પટણી) અને અન્ય તમામે આ વાત કરી. વાત કરતા કરતાં એ એને એમના જેવા બીજા બહેનો રડી પડ્યા. સરકાર પાસેથી #કેસડોલ સિવાયની એકેય રકમ આ પરિવારોને મળી નથી.
પાણી એવું આવ્યું કે, ખીલે બાંધેલી ભેંસો, ગાય, બળદ કે બકરાં કશુંયે તેઓ છોડી ના શક્યા. પાણીમાં ગૂંગળાઈને કેટલા વને આ અબોલ જીવોનો જીવ ગયો હશે? ખીલે બંધાયેલા મરેલા આ જીવોના ફોટો એમણે બતાવ્યા. કંપારી છુટે એવું એ દૃશ્ય હજુએ ભુલાતુ નથી.
પાણીની એવી ફડક બેસી ગઈ છે કે રાતના સરખુ ઊંઘીએ નથી શકતા. આ પરિવારોએ બાળકો અને ઘરડાંઓને સગા વહાલાંઓના ઘેર મોકલી દીધા છે. તેમના રહેણાંકની વ્યવસ્થા બદલાવવી જોઈએ એ તો નક્કી જ. વારંવાર કુદરતની થપાટ સામે ઝઝૂમવાનું એમનાથી હવે થવાનું નથી.
vssm ભેંસો લાવવા કે અન્ય વ્યવસાય માટે વગર વ્યાજે લોન આપશે. ઘરેય ઠીક કરીશું પણ અગત્યનું એમની રહેણાંકની વ્યવસ્થા બીજે કરવાનું છે... સરકારમાં રજૂઆત કરીશું. આપણે સૌ પણ આ માટે આપણા લેવલથી કોશીશ કરીએ તેવી અપેક્ષા રાખુ છુ...

Nomads cry-out their sufferings due to recent Floods

From where do we begin??

Patni Odha is a hamlet of Khariya village. Recently the village has been in news for the devastation and loss of life it suffered in the recent floods. Reading and watching about devastation is one thing and witnessing it in person is a totally different ball game.

The village has a substantial population of Devipujak community, almost 100 Devipujak families reside here. This is a community known for its enterprising and hardworking character. The entire village was submerged in water and the flow of the water was so intense that the families took refuge over their roofs and some who did not trust the roofs stayed on the neem trees.

These chiefly agrarian population is facing land erosion and are dealing with the deaths of their cattle wealth. Their goats and buffaloes were swept away while the ones times to the noose drowned to death. “The government has given 5-7 thousand rupees. How are we supposed to manage so much loss with so little money?” questioned a completely shattered Champaben, who now worries of how and where to restart from!!

How we wish such occasions too had a restart option!! VSSM will be supporting these families rebuild their lives but the number of families in need is way beyond our financial ability to provide support.

These families have been talking to VSSM’s Naran and make frequent calls to me.. they have buried the dead cattle but, no one has come to their door step to inquire about the loss nor has any one offered any help!!

VSSM is planning to support these families buy cattle so that they can commence on the path to rebuild their fate……

પટણી ઓઢા ખારીયા ગામનું પરુ. ખારીયામાં પૂરમાં જાનહાની થયાનું અને ઘણુયે નુક્શાન થયાનું આપણે વાંચ્યું. પણ નજરે જોઈએ તો આ બધું વધુ ભયાનક દેખાય.

દેવીપૂજક ખુબ મહેનતુ જાતિ. સ્વબળે આગળ આવવા મથતી આ જાતિના આ ગામમાં 100 ઉપરાંત પરિવાર રહે. પૂરના પાણી એવા ધસમસ્યા કે ઘરની છત માથે ચડાય એ ત્યાં ચડ્યા ને જેને છત ઉપર વિશ્વાસ નહોતો એમણે લીંબડા માથે ખાટલો બાંધ્યો. સાત આઠ જણા એની ઉપર બેસી રહ્યા.

ખેતી અને પશુપાલન કરનારા આ પરિવારોની જમીન ધોવાઈ ગઈ. ભેંસો ને બકરાં મરી ગયા. ચંપાબેને કહ્યું, 'સરકારે પોચ થી હાત હજાર આલ્યા. પણ એટલાથી બેઠું ના થવાય. ભેંસો મરી ગઈ. એ હોત તો ડેરીમાં દૂધ ભરાવી ને ખાત પણ....અને ઘર તો જુઓ ભઈસાબ.. ફેર ચમના બેઠા થઈશું....'

આપણે મદદ કરીશું. પણ આવા લોકોની સઁખ્યા વધુ છે.... ને આર્થિક રીતે અમે નાના છીયે...

કાર્યકર નારણ આગળ આ પરિવારોએ ખુબ વાતો કરી. મારી સાથે ફોન પર વાત કરી, ભેંસો મરી ગયાનું કહ્યું તો અમે કહ્યું, 'સરકારે પૈસા નથી આપ્યા?' જવાબમાં ચંપાબેને કહ્યું ' બકરાં ને બીજુંય ઘણું તો તણાઈ જ ગયું. ખીલે બંધાયેલી ભેંસો મરી ગઈ. ગંધ મારતું તું બધું, તે પાણી ઉતર્યા પછી ખાડા કરી ને એને દાટી દીધી... પણ કોઈ આ બારામાં પૂછવા નથી આવ્યું,ના મદદ માટે કીધું.'

આ પરિવારોને ભેંસ માટે વગર વ્યાજે લૉન આપવાનું પહેલા કરીશું. જેથી એ બેઠા થઇ શકે...બાકીની વિગત એમના જ મોઢે સાંભળો...

“Look at the vast span, this is where my farm was, it has now turned into a river bed!! During the floods, we took refuge on trees and watched in distress as water swept away our homes with everything in it, our neem trees, everything!! We were planning to install a bore-well and all the required material we had bought the motor, pipes and likes was swept away as well. This land is ruined, it will never be the way it was, not even after 15 years…. Water melons and musk melons is all we can think of growing!” The apathy of the Rawal and Devipujak families of #Umri village was so harsh it could move you to tears….

“In our entire lives, we have never asked for help from anyone and now we need to extend our hands for tarpaulin, food and grains. We were the ones helping others and now we need to rely on charity and support of others!!”

The families are tremendously worried about their future, they are clueless on how to go about and face the consequences of this unprecedented natural calamity, with grace and dignity. They were requesting us to find jobs for their young boys.” The natural disasters of such magnitude do not distinguish between the rich and poor, they simply destroy everything that comes in its path.

We are committed to help these 35 families whose lives have been reduced to living under tarpaulin, rebuild their homes and livelihoods while making sure their dignity remains intact!!

'મારુ અહીંયા ખેતર હતું આજે નદીનો પટ થઇ ગયો. ત્રણ દિવસ ઝાડ માથે બેઠા રહ્યા ને અમારી નજર સામે જ અમારું ઘર, ખેતર અને ઘર આગળ ઉગાડેલા લીમડા ને બીજુ બધું જતું રહ્યું. ખેતીની જમીન હતી એટલે બોરવેલ કરાવવાની હોંશ કરી. પાઇપો, મોટર બધું લાવ્યા હજુ કાલ તો બોરવેલ માટે રિંગ આવવાની હતી ને એની પહેલા પાણી ધસમસતું આવ્યું ને બધું લઇ ગયું. 15 વર્ષ મહેનત કરીયે ને તોય આ જમીન ખેતી લાયક નહિ બને. તરબૂત અને ટેટી પાકે એવો નદીનો ભાઠો થઇ ગયો.'

'કોઈ દિવસ કોઈ સામે હાથ લાંબો નહોતો કર્યો. અમારી પાસે જમીન હતી પણ હવે અનાજ અને તાડપત્રી માંગવી પડી.'

રાજાને રંક બનાવી દેતી કુદરત આગળ આપણે લાચાર... કેમના બેઠા થશું એ ચિંતા સતાવી રહી છે. ક્યાંક નોકરી જડે તો જુવાન છોકરાઓને નોકરીએ લગાડવાની વિનવણી કરી..

'મેમાન પારોણા આવે તો બેસાડવા ક્યાં? શરમ આવે છે. બીજાને મદદ આલનાર અમને આજે મદદની જરૂર પડી'

અમે બધી જ મદદ કરીશું. પાકા ઘરમાંથી વાદળી પ્લાસ્ટિકમાં આવી ગયેલા 35 પરિવારોને ઘર બાંધી આપીશું.

સ્વમાનપૂર્વક મદદ કરીશું. એમનું જ એમને આપીશું એવા પવિત્રભાવ સાથે. બે બે ભેંસ લઇ શકે એ માટે વગર વ્યાજે લૉન અને ઘર તો બાંધીશું જ..
