Jayantibhai called sounding rather depressed and agonised, “ I haven’t been able to sleep the whole last night, I was sure to die but there must be something that saved be, its difficult to understand all these difficulties…..” it was difficult to comprehend what Jayantibhai was speaking out….”What are you trying to say Jayantibhai??”
"What happened?” I asked….
“There were some pending payments regarding the the construction of 155 Vadee homes in Dhangadhra, so I called the concerned parties to come over with the bills. Later it would be difficult cause I was to get busy with the exams of my daughter who is to appear for the 10th Board exams. I did not wish to delay the payments. I also called up the vendor who supplies sand at our sites asking him to submit the bill on the number of tractor loads of sand delivered on site ( we also keep the details but the numbers are required from them), ” narrated Jayantibhai.
The vendor asked Jayantibhai to come and take the bills from his house to which Jayantibhai refused as he had no time also it was impossible for him to do rounds of houses of people to collect bills and make payments. Through the day the sand vendor made frequent calls to Jayantibhai asking him where he was. It really confused Jayantibhai. Finally at 5.30 when the vendor called again Jayantibhai asked him to meet up at the Kuda highway.
When they the vendor gave him the bills along with Rs. 5000 in cash. ‘
“What is this for?” asked Jayantibhai
“for you to buy sarees for my sister (Jayantibhai’s wife)” he replied.
This shocked Jayantibhai, for a moment he was unable to comprehend what was going on. Th vendor was trying to bribe him…. so that he can bill as much as he wished!!!
“This 5,000 you keep with yourself. You may come with sarees for your sister when we have a public program once the settlement is constructed and gift it to her in during this program. Right now we need donations to complete the construction of the settlements so donate as much as you want to this cause. We shall give you a receipt..” replied Jayantibhai.
The vendor was taken a back with this reply. He just kicked off on his bike.
"It is not the vendor’s fault, its the mindset that’s cultivated with the environment of corruption all around. He feel that’s how the system works,”felt Jayantibhai.
“I want God to save me from all these distractions, had i accepted the money I would be dead. I want to live to help my extended family - the members of nomadic communities he serves day in - day out. I would want God to cll me to him if I think anything otherwise!!!” were Jayantibhai’s call from within.

‘એ મને લાંચ આપી રહ્યા હતાં’
‘બહેન આખી રાત મનોમંથનમાં ગઈ... હું મરતાં મરતાં બચ્યો છું અને હું જીવતો રહ્યો છું તો એની પાછળ કંઇક કારણ છે. ત્યારે આ બધી અડચણો સમજાતી નથી.’ આવું vssmના કાર્યકર જયંતીભાઈ એ કહ્યું, ત્યારે પ્રથમ તો સમજાયું નહિ કે એ કહેવા શું માંગે છે.. મે પૂછ્યું,
‘પણ થયું શું?’
‘ધ્રાંગધ્રામાં આપણા કામ સંદર્ભે (વાદી પરિવારોના ૧૫૫ પરિવારોના ઘર બાંધવાનું કામ ચાલી રહ્યું છે) અમુક લોકોના પેમેન્ટ બાકી છે. મે એ સૌને કહ્યું, તમારાં બીલો આપી જાવ અને ચેક લઇ જાવ. પછી મારી દીકરીની ૧૦માં ધોરણ ની પરીક્ષા શરુ થાય છે એટલે હું ૧૫ દિવસ નહિ આવી શકું. તમારું પેમેન્ટ અટકશે. એમાં જે ભાઈ પાસેથી આપણે રેતી લઈએ છીએ ને એને પણ મે ફોન કર્યો કે, ટ્રેક્ટરના ફેરાની ગણતરી સાથેનું બીલ આપી જાવ.(આપણી પાસે ફેરાની ગણતરી હોય જ છે) એટલે એમણે પૂછ્યું,
‘તમે ક્યાં છો?’
‘હું તો વસાહતમાં જ છું’
ઘરે આવીને લઇ જાવ.’
મે એમને ના પાડી. સમય જ નથી રહેતો એમાં બીલો લેવા ઘરે ઘેરે ફરું તો પાર ક્યારે આવે? એ પછી એમનો આખા દિવસમાં ચારવાર ફોન આવ્યો. ક્યાં છો જયંતીભાઈ? ઘરે જવા નીકળ્યા? વગેરે વગેરે .. મને કંઈ સમજણ ના પડી કે, આ વારે વારે આમ કેમ પૂછે છે.. છેવટે એમનો ૫.૩૦ વાગે ફોન આવ્યો અને ફરી એજ સવાલ ‘ક્યાં છો?’ મેં કહ્યું ,‘બસ નીકળું છું’ એમણે કહ્યું, ‘કુડા ચોકડી ઉભા રહો હું બીલ આપી જાઉં છું’ મેં હા પાડી...કુડા ચોકડી એ આવ્યાં, એમણે બીલની સાથે રૂ.૫,૦૦૦ આપ્યાં. મે પૂછ્યું, ‘ આ કેમ?’
‘મારી બેનના(જયંતીભાઈની પત્નીના) કપડાં લાવજો’
જયંતીભાઈએ કહ્યું, ‘બહેન એમણે આવું કહ્યું, એટલે મારા મનમાં એટલો મોટો ધ્રાસકો પડ્યો.. એ મને લાંચ આપી રહ્યા હતાં... રેતીના ફેરામાં જેટલાં લખવા હોય એટલાં લખી શકાય એટલા માટે.... મેં એમને કહ્યું, ‘આ રૂ.૫,૦૦૦ તમારી પાસે રાખો. અને તમારે તમારી બેનને(જયંતીભાઈની પત્નીને) કપડાં જ આપવા છે, તો વસાહતના તમામ મકાન પુરા થશે પછી મોટો કાર્યક્રમ થશે એ વખતે બધાની હાજરીમાં બહેનને આપજો.. બાકી હાલતો વસાહતના બાંધકામમાં દાનની જરૂર છે એમાં જેટલાં આપવા હોય એટલા આપો. પાકી પહોંચ પણ આપીશું...’ આવું કહ્યું, એટલે એ તો ચુપ થઇ ગયા.. આમ તો કાપો તો લોહીના નીકળે એવાં.. અને બાઈકને કિક મારીને નીકળી ગયાં.’
આ ઘટનામાં એમનો વાંક નથી જોતાં પણ મૂળ એમને આ પ્રકારે કામ કરવાની ટેવ પડી છે એટલે એમની ભાષામાં કહીએ તો વ્યવહાર કરે છે.. મૂળ પ્રશ્ન સિસ્ટમનો છે વગર પૈસે તે આ બધું ચાલતું હશે?? એનું આ ઉદાહરણ છે..
જયંતીભાઈ કહે છે એમ, ‘ભગવાન આ બધાથી બચાવે.. હું મરતા મરતા બચ્યો એનું કારણ મારે મારાં આ બધાં પરિવારો(વિચરતા)ના કામમાં નિમિત બનવાનું હશે. અને એમાં જો જીવ લપસી પડે તો બધું નકામું થઇ જાય એના કરતાં ભગવાન લઇ લે એ વધારે સારું...’
vssm ની ટીમમાં આવા જ સંનિષ્ઠ કાર્યકરો છે અને એટલે જ આ કામો થઇ શકે છે.. સંસ્થાને એની આવી સુંદર મજાની ટીમ ઉપર ગર્વ છે... અને જયંતીભાઈની નીસ્બતને સલામ..
Initiating the construction of houses in Juna Deesa has been a long uphill task finally, we have began the construction process there. The cost of each house is estimated to be Rs. 1.40 lacs, around 70 families will receive Rs. 40,000 and the other 73 families will be receiving Rs. 70,000 support from the government. The well wishers of VSSM will provide Rs. 25,000 for each of the house while Shri, Sudhirbhai Thakar is providing Rs. 15,000 (per house) for the construction of sanitation unit in each house. The balance funds will be managed by the families. The collective efforts of donors, community and government aid is shaping up a beautiful future for these families……
