It may sound surprising, but we celebrated an event in a village crematorium.

It sure is unusual for anyone to celebrate an occasion at a place we pay final farewell to our loved ones. However, we decided to make a venue.

The residents of Diyodar’s Mojru village decided to transform the village crematorium into an oasis for birds by turning it green. The leaders of the village Shri Keshaji Thakor (ex-minister) and the Sarpanch, are sensitive to the need to grow trees; hence they invited us to plant trees in their village. What more could we ask for

We decided to begin the plantation drive with a small Puja, and community members who shared our sensibilities remained present on occasion and launched the plantation drive. Pits for 2327 trees were dug up, the panchayat made arrangements for water supply up to the crematorium, and VSSM will install a drip irrigation system and appoint a Vriksh Mitr. Our efforts are focused on ensuring that each planted tree survives and the community of Juna Mojru is mindful, and we are sure these trees will grow well under their care.

If the entire Banaskantha becomes aware of the need to work on the pressing issues of growing trees and harvesting rainwater, it will transform the region. The rain gods would be compelled to shower their blessings on the region.

અમે સ્મશાનમાં એક પ્રસંગ એક પણ ગામ સાથે મળીને ઊજવ્યો..

સ્મશાનમાં પ્રસંગ! 

નવાઈ લાગી ને?આમ તો વાત નવાઈ લાગે એવી જ છે. 

આપણું પ્રિયજન જ્યાંથી આ દુનિયામાં સદેહે વિદાય થયું હોય ત્યાં કોણ પ્રસંગ ઊજવે?પણ અમે ઊજવ્યો..

દિયોદરનું જુના મોજરુગામનું સ્મશાન. આ સ્મશાનને હરિયાળુ અને પશુપંખીઓને ગમે એવું કરવાનો નિર્ધાર ગામે કર્યો. 

ગામના આગેવાન પૂર્વ મંત્રી શ્રી કેશાજી ઠાકોર અને સરપંચ શ્રી પોતે પણ વૃક્ષોને લઈને ઘણા સંવેદનશીલ. એટલે એમણે અમને વૃક્ષો વાવી ઉછેરવા આમંત્રણ આપ્યું. અમને તો જોઈતું હતું ને વૈધે કીધા જેવું થયું. 

વૃક્ષદેવની સ્થાપના એ પણ પૂજન સાથે સાથે કરવાનો નિર્ધાર કર્યો. ને ગામના વૃક્ષો માટે મમતા રાખનાર સૌ હાજર રહ્યા ને વૃક્ષોની વાવણી કરી. જૂના મોજરુગામમાં 2327 વૃક્ષો ઉછરે તે માટે ખાડા કર્યા. પંચાયતે સ્મશાન સુધી પાણીની વ્યવસ્થા કરી. અમે ડ્રીપ કરી દઈશું ને પગારદાર માણસ રાખીશું. 

ટૂંકમાં વાવેલા તમામ વૃક્ષો ઉછરે એ અમારો પ્રયત્ન. જો કે ગામના વૃક્ષપૂજનમાં ઉપસ્થિત સૌ વૃક્ષો માટે ઘણા સંવેદનશીલ એટલે વાવેલા વૃક્ષો ઉછરવાના એ નક્કી..

બસ આખો બનાસકાંઠો આ રીતે જાગૃત થાય તો પાંચ વર્ષમાં જીલ્લાની સકલ બદલાઈ જાય.. પછી તો મેઘરાજાનેય વરસવું પડશે. બસ આ થઈ જાય તો બનાસકાંઠો વરસાદથી અછૂતો નહીં રહે..

જૂના મોજરુમાં વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવામાં મદદ કરનાર આદરણીય ભાવનાબેન મહેતા, જયેશભાઈ મહેતાના અમે આભારી છીએ. તેઓ મોજરુના વતની નથી પણ તેમને વૃક્ષો માટે મમતા છે. માટે નિમિત્ત બન્યા છે. 

વૃક્ષ ઉછેરમાં કાર્યરત અમારી ટીમ નારણભાઈ, મહેશભાઈ, હરેશભાઈ, ચિરાગભાઈ, રીંકુ સૌની ભૂમિકા મહત્વની, અમારી પાસે આવી સરસ ટીમ છે માટે આવા સરસ કાર્યો થાય. સાથે છો એનો આનંદ...

Kangsiya women makes Mittal Patel to wear Bangels

 “Ben, you set up a kiosk to retail fashion accessories. When you are  financially independent you will not require to stretch your hands before your husband.” The women of Kheda’s Sandhana shared this piece of advice with me.

They were 100% correct, and I liked them for their understanding.

Financial independence for women is needed in this time and age. Despite having the required skills, qualifications and understanding many women are unable to step out of their homes because their husbands would not want them to. But, financial independence is for one’s security. In case of an untoward situation, it is financial independence that will allow the women to face the challenges with respect and determination. They would not require to start from scratch. Education and economic independence thus become critical.

“Stretching hands before the husband even for 5 rupees is humiliating at times. If we are earning, we can spend our money wherever we want to...” Bharti tells me.

Women stepping not of the house to make a living might be a recent scenario for many communities, but the kangasiya women have led a financially independent life for generations.

“However our husband would be, we do not go complaining to our parents’, when we have our earnings there is no need to do so. When we are the earning members, do not mind tolerating the  husband!” Gauriben shared a very strong opinion.

While Gauri Ma remarked, “From an early age, we begin to groom our daughters on business skills. As a result, they are better prepared just in case they are faced with any crisis.

The kangasiya women are a truly empowered lot. So ideally,  each woman, whether she is a mother or  mother-in-law should provide space to their daughters and daughters-in law to secure financial independence. It is only then they would be able to face the world with their head held high.

" બેન તમે બોરિયા, બકલ ટૂંકમાં હોઝીયરીના સામાનની એક દુકાન કરી લો.. જાતે કમાતા હશો ને તો તમારે તમારા ઘરવાળા પાહેણ હાથ લાંબો નહીં કરવો પડે.. "

ખેડાના સંધાણામાં રહેતી કાંગસિયા બહેનોએ મને આ શીખ આપી..

મને એમની વાત ખુબ ગમી કારણ એ સો ટકા સાચી હતી..

દરેક સ્ત્રી પગભર થાય એ આજના સમયની જરૃર.  હું ઘણી એવી બહેનોને મળી છું જે ખુબ સરસ ભણી છે આવડત એનામાં ખુબ છે. કામ કરવાની ઈચ્છા છે છતાં ઘરવાળા ના પાડે છે માટે એ ઘર બહાર જઈ નથી શકતી.  કમાવવું- પોતાના પગ પર ઊભા રહેવું કોઈને બતાવવા માટે નહીં પણ ન કરે નારાયણ પણ ઘરમાં કોઈ મુસીબત આવી પડી કે એવા સંજોગો ઊભા થયા કે એને કમાવવું પડે ત્યારે વર્ષો પછી એકડ એકથી શરૃ કરવું ક્યારેક ઘણું મુશ્કેલ બની જતું હોય છે.. એટલે ખાસ થાય ભણીને પગભર થવું..

મને ભારતીબહેને તો કહ્યું." પાંચ પાંચ રૃપિયા માટે ઘરવાળા હામે હાથ લાંબો કરવો એના કરતા આપણે કમાતા હોઈયે તો એની હાડાબારી નહીં. આપણા પૈસા આપણને ગમે એમ વાપરીએ.. "

આપણા ત્યાં બહેનો છેલ્લા થોડા વર્ષોથી ઘર બહાર નીકળી કમાતી થઈ. પણ વિચરતી જાતિમાંના કાંગસિયા સમાજની બહેનો તો સદીઓથી કમાય છે.. 

ગૌરીબહેન કહે, "બેન અમારો ઘરવાળો ગમે એવો હોય અમે એની ફરિયાદ લઈને પિયર ન જઈએ.. એને અમે નભાઈ લઈએ.. આપણે કમાતા હોઈએ પછી વાંધો શું...."

કેવી ગજબ વાત... 

તો ગૌરી માએ કહ્યું, અમે નાનપણથી દીકરીઓને વેપાર કરતા શીખવીએ જેથી ગમે એવી વિપદા આવે એ પોતાનું કરી લે...

કાંગસિયા બહેનો સ્ત્રી સશક્તિકરણનું સાચુ ઉ.દા. લાગી..

બહેનોએ બહુ ભાવથી મને બંગડી પહેરાવી... આમ તો એમની આમાં માસ્ટરી.. જરાય દર્દ વગર એ બંગડી પહેરાવી શકે..

દરેક સ્ત્રી, દરેક મા અને સાસુ પોતાની દીકરીઓને વહુઓને પગભર થવા મોકળાશ આપે એ ઈચ્છનીય... તાકી એ દુનિયા સામે ખુદ્દારીથી ઊભી રહી શકે...

Mittal Patel meets Pasi Ma during her visit to kheda

Pasi Ma lives in Dabhan. Many years ago, her husband walked out of their marriage, leaving her to take care of the children. A little later in life, both her sons passed away, and Pasi Ma returned to her maternal home, where she now stays alone in a small hut. She works as a farm and domestic help, but with age catching up she can no longer work with the same energy. Also, she has shown symptoms of leprosy.

VSSM’s Rajnibhai got to know about Pasi Ma. He recommended support for her under our Mavjat initiative, where we support destitute elderly by providing them with a monthly ration kit and taking care of their medical needs. As a result, VSSM began providing a monthly ration kit to Pasi ba and initiated her treatment at Civil Hospital.

I was in Kheda recently and decided to meet Pasi Ma, and inquire about her well-being and if there was anything more we could do. But, I turned to blank the moment I saw her house. Tin sheets were arranged on the four sides and two above as roof was home to her. On the earth/floor was the chula and some household stuff.

"How do you cook during monsoons?" was my first question. How did Pasi Ma protect the chula when rain lashed, and where did she sleep during rains?

"I remain seated until the time it rains, I go and eat at anyone who sympathises and gives me food. Otherwise, I wait for the rains to stop. And rainy nights I sleep on my neighbour's porch. Pasi ma survived under pathetic living conditions. Giving her a decent roof is the least we could do.

Since we were looking for a prompt resolution to Pasi Ma's challenges, the thought of the very humble district Collector Shri Bachani saheb crossed my mind. If Pasi Ma had access to the benefits of Antyoday Ration Card and Elderly Pension, life would be a little easy for Pasi Ma. We spoke to Shri Bachani Saheb about Pasi Ma's condition. The next day, he instructed his team to provide her with Antyoday Card and Elderly Pension. Rarely does any officer work with such promptness. Our Pranams to Shri Bachani Saheb and the Kheda district administration for their support.

If the government allots a plot to Pasi Ma, the well-wishers of VSSM have donated enough to help us construct a house for Pasi Ma. If the plot doesn't come through, we will build a room at her current residency, but it would be better if the government allotted a plot. Shri Bachani Saheb has taken the initiative to do the needful and expedite the process. We will wait a month for the plot to come through so that Pasi Ma does not have to face these challenges for the rest of her life.

And we are thankful to the district administration of Kheda and Shri Bacahni Saheb for their proactive support.

I wish to see Pasi Ma move into her own house as soon as possible; hopefully, that too shall happen quickly.

પસી મા ડભાણમાં રહે.

વર્ષો પહેલાં એમના પતિએ એમને ત્યજી દીધેલા. બે સંતાનો હતા પણ બેય ગુજરી ગયા. પસી મા પિયર આવી ગયા. છાપરુ કરીને એકલા રહે. 

ખેતમજૂરી અને લોકોના ઘરોમાં કામ કરવા એ જાય. પણ ઉંમર થતા કામ કરવામાં તકલીફ થવા માંડી પાછી રક્તપિતની બિમારીના લક્ષણો પણ ખરા. 

અમારા કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈના ધ્યાને પસીમા આવ્યા. અમે માવજત કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત જે માવતરો નિસહાય હોય, કામ કરી શકે તેવી ક્ષમતા ન હોય તેમને રાશન આપીયે. તે રજનીભાઈએ પસી માને રાશન આપવા લખ્યું ને અમે દર મહિને એમને કોઈ સામે હાથ લાંબો ન કરવો પડે તે માટે રાશન આપવાની શરૃઆત કરી. સાથે સિવીલમાં સારવાર પણ શરૃ કરાવી. 

હમણાં ખેડા જવાનું થયું તે વખતે પસીમાને ખાસ મળવા જવાનું થયું. ખાસ તો તેઓ બરાબર છે? કાંઈ તકલીફ નથી ને એ બધુ પુછવાની ટેવના લીધે.

પણ પસીમાના ઘરે ગયા પછી થોડીવાર માટે શૂન્ય થઈ ગઈ. પતરાની આડાશો ચારે બાજુ એમણે કરેલી ને બે પતરાં એમણે એ પતરાં ઉપર ઢાંકેલા એની નીચે ચૂલો ને થોડી ઘર વખરી ત્યાં પડેલી. 

સાહજિક પહેલો પ્રશ્ન ચોમાસામાં તમે રાંધો કેવી રીતે એ પુછાયો. કારણ બે પતરાની નીચે જ ચૂલો હતો વાછટ તો આવે જ. વળી વરસતા વરસાદમાં સૂવાનું ક્યાં એ પણ પ્રશ્ન થયો...

પસીમાએ ધીમા અવાજે કહ્યું, વરસાદ વરસતો હોય ત્યાં સુધી બેસી રહેવાનું.. કોઈને દયા આવે ને બોલાવે તો એના ત્યાં ખાઉ. બાકી વરસાદ બંધ થાય એની રાહ જોવાની. જ્યારે ચાલુ વરસાદે પડોશીની ઓશરીમાં એ સૂઈ જાય. 

કેવી કરુણ હાલત. અમે છાપરુ સરખુ કરી આપવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. 

ત્યાં કલેક્ટર શ્રી બાચાણી સાહેબ યાદ આવ્યા. ખુબ જ ભલા અધિકારી. ખેડાનો કાર્યભાર એ સંભાળે. પસી માને અંત્યોદય રાશનકાર્ડ અને વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન મળે તો ટેકો રહે. એ માટે બાચાણી સાહેબનું ધ્યાન દોર્યું ને એમણે બીજા દિવસે બા ને કાર્ડ ને પેન્શન આપવાનું કર્યું. આવી ત્વરાથી ખુબ ઓછા અધિકારીને કામ કરતા જોયા છે.. બાચાણી સાહેબ અને ડાના અધિકારીગણને આ માટે પ્રણામ કરવા ઘટે.

બાને જો સરકાર ઘરથાળનો પ્લોટ આપે તો અમે મકાન બાંધવા પૈસા ભેગા કર્યા છે. VSSM સાથે સંકળાયેલા ઘણા સ્નેહીજનોએ મદદ કરી છે. પ્લોટ ન મળે તો એ જ્યાં રહે છે ત્યાં એકરૃમ બાંધી દઈશું પણ પ્લોટ ફળવાય તો સારુ. બાચાણી સાહેબને વાત કરીને એમણે એ કાર્ય પણ ઝડપથી કરવા અધિકારીઓને કહેશેનું કહ્યું. અમે મહિનો રાહ જોઈશું જો પ્લોટ ફળવાય તો એના પર ઘર બાંધીયે તો પસી માને એ જીવે ત્યાં સુધી નિરાંત થઈ જાય... 

પસીમાને ઘર બાંધકામમાં તેમજ દર મહિને રાશન આપવામાં મદદ કરનાર સૌનો આભાર.. અને ખેડા વહીવટીતંત્ર ખાસ તો કલેક્ટર શ્રી બાચાણી સાહેબનો આભાર....

બસ પસીમા પોતાની જગ્યામાં સરસ ઘરમાં રહેવા જાય એવું ગોઠવાય એમ ઈચ્છું...

 An aware village getting a sensible individual as its sarpanch is always a good fortune!

Naranbhai is one such sensible and aware Sarpanch of Deesa’s Soyla village. The village has two lakes, and groundwater levels have depleted at an alarming rate. The farmers have no choice but to continue going deeper until they can no longer drill into the earth. After which, the borewell fails. Getting a new borewell drilled involves enormous expenses, which most farmers cannot afford.

The community is aware that we will need to deepen the lakes to replenish the water we have pulled out of the earth. As soon as they learnt about our water conservation efforts in Banaskantha, they got in touch with us, accepted all the preconditions and immediately got to work.

Jewelex Foundation’s Shri Piyushbhai Kothari, who remains associated with many of our activities, supported the dredging of this lake. As a result, we have this wide and beautiful lake full to the brim as a result of very good monsoon this year. And because the lake was freshly deepened a lot of water seeped into the ground.

VSSM, in partnership with the forest department, plans to plant and raise 8000 trees in Soyla. 4000 of these trees have already been planted. VSSM will make arrangements for drip irrigation and appoint a Vriksh Mitr to care for and nurture these trees. the remaining 4000 trees will be planted within a fortnight.

“We want to win the first prize in raising tree…” Soyla’s Devchandbhai had shared enthusiastically, reflecting the passion of the community.

If we had similar experiences with other villages, the parched earth would soon turn lush green.

જાગૃત ગામને જાગૃત સરપંચ મળવા એ સદનસીબ..

ડિસાનું સોયલા. નારણભાઈ ત્યાંના આવા જ જાગૃત સરપંચ. ગામમાં બે જ તળાવ. તળ દર વર્ષે નીચે જતા જાય. બોરવેલ ડચકા લે એટલે ખેડૂતો કોલમ ઉતારતા જાય અને છેવટે કોલમથી પણ કામ ન થાય ને બોરવેલ ફેઈલ.. 

ફરી નવો બોરવેલ ને એ માટે મસમોટા ખર્ચા. 

ધરતીમાંથી ઉલેચેલું પાણી પાછુ આપવાનું માધ્યમ તળાવો એવું નારણભાઈને ગામના સૌ જાણે. એટલે જ એમને જ્યારે ખ્યાલ આવ્યો કે અમે બનાસકાંઠામાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરીએ એટલે એમણે તુરત અમારો સંપર્ક કર્યો ને માટી ઉપાડવાની અમારી શરત સાથે ત્યાં તળાવ ગળાવવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.

VSSM  સાથે સંકળાયેલા અમારા પ્રિયજન પિયુષભાઈ કોઠારી જવેલેક્ષ ફાઉન્ડેશને અમને આ કાર્ય માટે સહયોગ કર્યો અને સરસ તળાવ ગળાયું.

આ વર્ષે મેઘરાજાએ મહેર કરીને ગામ તળાવ ભરાયું. ગામલોકો રાજી રાજી.. તળાવ ખોદાયેલું હતું આથી ઘણું પાણી જમીનમાં ઝડપથી ઉતર્યું પણ ખરા.

સોયલામાં જ જંગલવિભાગ અને  VSSM ની મદદથી લગભગ આઠેક હજારથી વધારે વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવાનું પણ અમે કરીશું. જેમાંના 4000 વૃક્ષો તો જંગલવિભાગે વાવી પણ દીધા. અમે ત્યાં ડ્રીપ અને વૃક્ષોની સંભાળ રાખનારને માસીક વેતન પણ આપીશું. જેથી વૃક્ષો બરાબર જળવાય. બીજા ચાર હજાર વૃક્ષોનું વાવેતર પણ પંદર દિવસમાં પૂર્ણ થાય તેવું કરીશું.

પણ વૃક્ષો માટે પણ ગામના સૌને ઘણી મમતા. ગામના દેવચંદભાઈએ તો કહ્યું અમારે વૃક્ષ ઉછેરમાં પહેલો નંબર લેવો છે. બસ આ જુસ્સો દરેક ગામમાં ઊભો થાય તો મા ધરા હરિયાળી અને પાણીદાર થઈ જાય એ નક્કી...

The rapidly changing climate and its implications have made the need for ‘Jalmadir-water shrines’ essential and imminent.

If we study the recent weather patterns, we will notice that droughts and floods have increased their occurrence. Yet, by February-March,  water scarcity begins to surface. Why so?

The water conservation efforts we launched under the guidance of Shri Rashminbhai Sanghvi have spread across arid Banaskantha; the experiences we gathered in the process have given us enough understanding of the required water conservation efforts. However, we feel the efforts government and organisations like us are putting in need to increase manifold.

We must catch and save each drop of water; only then will we be able to give back all the water we have pulled out of the ground.

In Banaskantha, we have deepened and dredged 197 lakes so far. This year alone, we repaired 40 lakes. The support we receive from the villages has helped us reach this number.

The Paadan village of Banaskantha’s Sui block is the last village after which we have the international border with Pakistan. The underground water in this region is saline as it sits at the edge of the Great Rann of Kutchh. Therefore, drilling a borewell is not an option for this village. The main occupation of the communities here is cattle rearing, and the village lake is their lifeline.

With the help of Uni Design Group and the support of the village community, we deepened the lake of Paadan village.

The enthusiastic and compassionate Sarpanch of Shri Bharatsinhji sent us an invite to work in their village. As a result, we deepened the lake in the village.

This year the rain gods have blessed Gujarat. The lake filled up to the brim, and we had the opportunity to witness the incredible sight. We should be thankful to nature for blessing us all with good monsoon and Uni Design for supporting the cause.

Looking at the condition of the region, we feel the lake could be widened a little so that it can hold more water because the villagers depend on this lake.

The primary reason of rural-urban migration is the lack of water. If there is enough water, the villagers would not be compelled to migrate to urban regions in search of livelihood. Banaskantha is a drought-prone region. A good monsoon happens once in a few years. If the lakes are big enough, they can hold more water.

I am grateful to Bharatbhai and his family members. They travelled from Vav to applaud our efforts. I always hesitate to receive accolades for our work, but this Paghri you put on my head feels special; it is an honour that comes with responsibility. I believe that if someone puts it on our heads, we should be able to uphold its integrity of it. And I promise to uphold the honour of it! I am also grateful to the universe for giving me the opportunities and strength to work on such noble causes.

જલમંદિરો મહત્તમ બંધાય એ આજના સમયની મુખ્ય જરૃરિયાત..

આમ વૈશ્વિક અવલોકન કરશો તો જણાશે કે, દુષ્કાળની સાથે સાથે અતિવૃષ્ટિનું પ્રમાણ ઘણું વધ્યું છે. છતાં પાણીની મુશ્કેલી ફેબ્રુઆરી, માર્ચ આવતા આવતા આપણને વર્તાવા માંડે છે.

આવું કેમ ?

આદરણીય રશ્મીનભાઈ સંઘવીના માર્ગદર્શનથી શરૃ કરેલું અમારુ જળ વ્યવસ્થાપનનું કાર્ય આજે તો ઘણું વિસ્તર્યુ છે. આ કાર્યો કરતાં કરતાં જ પાણીના આયોજનમાં ક્યાંક આપણે ઊણા હોઈએ એવું લાગે છે. સરકાર અને અમારા જેવી સંસ્થાઓ ઘણો પ્રયત્ન કરે પણ કદાચ એ પ્રયત્નો વધારે સઘન કરવાની વધારે જરૃર જણાય છે. 

વરસતા વરસાદના ટીપે ટીપા ને બચાવી ધરતીના પેટાળમાં ઉતારવાની જરૃર છે...જો આ કરીશું તો જ આપણે ધરતીનું જે દોહન કર્યું છે તે એને પાછુ આપી શકીશું...

બનાસકાંઠામાં અમે 197 તળાવો ઊંડા કર્યા. આ વર્ષે તો 40 તળાવો ઊંડા થયા. ગામોએ ઘણો સહયોગ કર્યો એટલે આ આંકડા સુધી પહોંચી શક્યા. 

બનાસકાંઠાના સુઈગામ તાલુકાનું અને પાકિસ્તાન બોર્ડર પર આવેલા પાડણગામનું #તળાવ અમે ઊંડુ કર્યું. આ વિસ્તારમાં તળમાં ખારા પાણી. બોરવેલ શક્ય નથી. ગામ લોકોનો મુખ્ય વ્યવસાય પશુપાલનનો ત્યારે તળાવ આ ગામની મુખ્ય જીવાદારી.

અમે યુની ડીઝાઈન ગ્રુપ અને ગામલોકોના સહયોથી આ ગામનું તળાવ ઊંડુ કર્યું. 

ગામના #સરપંચ ભરતસિંહજી બહુ ઉત્સાહી..એમણે અમને ગામનું તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવા માટે કહેણ મોકલેલું ને અમે તળાવ ઊંડુ કર્યું.

આ વર્ષે ચોમાસુ ખુબ સારુ બેઠુ. પાડણનું આખુ તળાવ સુંદર ભરાયું. બસ ચાલુ વરસાદે અમે તળાવ જોવા ગયા. આટલું બધુ પાણી જોઈને રાજી તો થવાય જ. મેઘરાજાએ મહેર કરી એ માટે કુદરતની આભારી. યુની ડીઝાઈને મદદ કરી એ માટે પણ આભારી...

આ વિસ્તારની સ્થિતિ જોતા હજુ આ તળાવ વધારે પહોળુ થાય તે જરૃરી. મૂળ ગામલોકો તેના પર નભે છે માટે..

ગામમાં પાણી નહીં હોય તો લોકો સ્થળાંતર કરશે, ગામ છોડશે ને શહેરમાં રહેવા મજબૂર થશે. ત્યારે ગામડાં ભાંગે નહીં તે પણ જોવું રહ્યું. માટે આ તળાવ વધારે પહોળું કરવાનું મન છે.. મૂળ બનાસકાંઠાનો આ સૂકો વિસ્તાર ચોમાસુ બે ત્રણ વર્ષે એક વખત સારુ આવે. જો મોટા તળાવો હોય તો વરસાદી પાણી વધારે સંગ્રહી શકે...

સરપંચ ભરતભાઈ અને તેમના પરિવારજનોનો ઘણો આભાર.. અમે જે સેવાકાર્યો કરીએ તે બિરદાવવા છેક વાવથી આપ સૌ આવ્યા... આમ તો કોઈ સન્માન કરે તે ગમે નહીં પણ તમારી પાઘડી મને ગમી.. પાઘડી એ જવાબદારી છે. ગમે એને ન પહેરાવાય. એમ પણ હું માનુ ને કોઈ પહેરાવે ને આપણે પહેરીએ તો પછી એને શોભાવવી.. હું પાઘડીને શોભાવીશ એ વચન.....

અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ અને અન્ય ફીલ્ડવર્કરની આમાં ઘણી મહેનત.. એ લોકો જ તળાવોના પસંદગી કરવાનું ને અન્ય કાર્ય કરે. આવા સરસ મજાના મહેનતુ કાર્યકર મળવા એ પણ સદનસીબ..

કુદરતની આભારી છું એણે આવા સતકાર્યો કરવાની તક આપી...

The Central Government’s  Development and Welfare Board for the Nomadic, De-Notified and Semi-Nomadic Communities has framed separate policies for their development and made special budgetary provisions. As a board member, I also had a role in formulating this policy.

After the scheme came into being, it was crucial it reached the target population and did not remain on paper.

As a board member, I had the opportunity to meet government representatives and community leaders from various states to communicate about these policies. At the meetings, the board officials clearly explained the multiple schemes designed to uplift nomadic and de-notified communities.

The officials of Rajasthan state especially remained present in the program. We also had a thorough discussion with them on policy matters.

The opportunities I get as a board member are genuinely enriching.

However, as an organisation, we plan to extend our work for the welfare of nomadic and de-notified communities in Rajasthan in the coming months. May almighty provide us with the strength to carry on.

ભારત સરકારના વિચરતી વિમુક્ત જાતિઓના કલ્યાણ બોર્ડ દ્વારા  વિચરતી જાતિઓના કલ્યાણ અર્થે અલાયદી યોજના બની અને બજેટ પણ ફળવાયું.

આ યોજના બનાવવામાં બોર્ડના સભ્ય હોવાના નાતે મારે ભૂમીકા પણ ભજવવાની થઈ. 

વળી યોજના તો બની પણ લોકો સુધી એ પહોંચે નહીં તો એનો ઉદૃશ્ય પૂર્ણ ન થાય. 

એટલે દેશના વિવિધ રાજ્યોમાં રાજ્ય સરકાર અને વિચરતી વિમુકત્ત જાતિના પ્રતિનિધિઓ સાથે યોજનાઓની માહિતી આપવા બોર્ડના સદસ્ય તરીકે જવાનું થયું. જ્યાં બોર્ડના અધિકારીગણે ખૂબ સુંદર રીતે યોજનાઓની માહિતી આપી. 

રાજસ્થાન સરકારના અધિકારીઓ કાર્યક્રમમાં ખાસ ઉપસ્થિત રહ્યા. એમની સાથે પણ નિતીવિષયક ઘણી બાબતોને લઈને ચર્ચા થઈ. 

બોર્ડના સદસ્ય હોવાના નાતે આ બધુ કર્યું.

પણ વ્યક્તિ VSSM તરીકે અમારી ઈચ્છા આવનારા વખતમાં રાજસ્થાનમાં પણ આ સમુદાયોના કલ્યાણમાં નિમિત્ત બનવાની..

બસ ઈશ્વર આ મનોરથ પૂર્ણ કરાવે તેવી પ્રાર્થના...

“The ravanhattha/ektara has been the source of our sustenance. The lullabies we sing at the tune of ravanhattha bring us sarees and grains in donation. We hold on to all that we need and sell off the rest. The occupation gives us enough to survive, but we are not left with any surplus that can help us survive a rainy day. Also, we did not understand savings, perhaps the reason we  face such conditions.” Amratkaka from Deesa Vasan village shared his plight.

Amratkaka and Shanta Ma are a childless couple. Until he could,  Amratkaka earned his living through playing ravanhattha. But with age catching up, Amratkaka finds it exhausting walking small distances. The same is with Shanta Ma, his wife.

The sarees given in donation have also been repurposed to build a roof! Yes, rooftops. Such rooftops are never enough to protect against forces of nature, but low-income families are left with little choice. However, the tarpaulins during monsoons secure them from rains, but these are not ideal living conditions.

The ageing couple has few relatives who take their care, but they too survive under impoverished conditions. Hence, it is Kaka and Ma who primarily look after each other.

After VSSM learnt about their condition, we began providing a monthly ration kit to them. As a result, the couple is relieved from the worry of their everyday meals.

I was in Deesa recently and made it a point to meet Kaka and Ma, “we don’t need to beg for food, nor do we need to worry about our next meal,” they tell me.

VSSM supports 275 such elderly; we become guardians of these elderlies. In addition, the ration kits (costing Rs. 1400 each) provide food security.

રાવણહથ્થો લઈને હાલરડાં ગાવાનો અમારો મુખ્ય ધંધો. હારડું સાંભળી લોકો સાડી અને દાણા ભેટમાં આપે. આ સાડી અને દાણા અમારા ખપ પૂરતા રાખીએ બાકીનું વેચી જીવવા માટે જરૃરી બીજુ રાશનપાણી લાવીએ. પણ આમાં ખાલી જીવાય. કાંઈ ભેગું ન થાય અને ભેગું કરવાની બેન સમજણેય નહોતી. એટલે જ આવી હાલતમાં છીએ..

ડીસાના વાસણ ગામના અમરતકાકાએ આ કહ્યું. અમરતકાકા ને તેમના પત્ની શાંતા મા નિસંતાન. હાથ પગ ચાલતા ત્યાં સુધી કાકાએ રાવણહથ્થો વગાડ્યો. પણ હવે ઝાઝુ ચાલે તો શ્વાસ ચડી જાય છે. તેમના પત્ની શાંતામાની પણ એજ દશા. કાકા રાવણહથ્થો વગાડવા જતા ત્યારે ભેટમાં જે સાડીઓ મળતી તેમાંથી તેમણે તેમનું છાપરુ બનાવેલું. પ્રથમ તો વિચારીને જ નવાઈ લાગે કે સાડીઓમાંથી છાપરુ! વળી આ છાપરાંમાં ટાઢ, તડકો, વરસાદ કશુંયે રોકાય નહીં. પણ મજબૂરી રહેવું પડે. હા ચોમાસામાં મીણિયું લઈ આવે જે છાપરા પર ઢાંકે જેથી વરસાદથી બચી શકાય. પણ આવી વિપરતી સ્થિતિમાં કાકા રહે. હવે ઘડપણ આવ્યું. ચલાય નહીં કામ ન થાય. એમના સગાઓ થોડું ધ્યાાન આપે પણ એમની સ્થિતિયે એક સાંધતા તેર તૂટે એવી એટલે કાયમ કાકા ને બાને સાચવવાનું ન થાય. અમારા ધ્યાને આ સ્થિતિ આવી. ઓશિયાળી વેઠવી તો કોને ગમે? અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. જેનાથી કાકાને ઘણી રાહત છે. હમણાં ડીસા જવાનું થયું ત્યારે કાકાને બાને ખાસ મળી એમણે કહ્યું, હવે માંગવા જવું નથી પડતું અને શું ખાઈશું એની ચિંતા મટી ગઈ છે.કેટલી મોટી વાત.. બસ આવા  275 માવતરોને ટાઢક આપવાનું અમે કરીએ. તમે પણ આવા માવતરના પાલક બની શકો. માસીક 1400 રૃપિયા પ્રત્યેક માવતરના રાશનનો ખર્ચ.

"The crematorium of our village wore a haunted look. There wasn't a  single tree to stand under when cremation rituals were performed. Once the rites were over, everyone would spread across in the neighbouring farms to rest under the shade of a tree while the pyre burnt. However, last year with your help, we began planting trees at the crematorium, which has given it a soothing green cover. People now come to the crematorium to enjoy the shade of these trees." Bharkawada's ex-sarpanch Jayantibhai shared this very encouraging feedback.

Shri Girishbhai Raval, a retired forest officer, stays in the village. The plantation was carried out under his guidance; he also actively took care of the planted trees. As a result, 2471 of the  2500 trees we planted with Rosy Blue's help have survived and grown. The community has replaced the 29 who could not withstand the heat.

"Ben, we have planted 45 varieties of trees; it is this diversity that will keep the soil and our environment healthy." Hasmukhbhai, a resident of Bharkawada tells me.

The plantation drive of Bharkawada had made it as front page news of local daily Divya Bhaskar. The same article was also covered in the nation edition Dainik Jagran.

"Ben, we know the responsibility of nurturing and raising these trees. We promise to raise all the trees we plant." I remember Haribhai and Bhikhabhai had promised me. "All of us have come together to put our efforts and raise these trees."

જુઓ અમે વાવેલા કેવા ઉછર્યા તે...

"અમારા સ્મશાન પાસેથી અમે પસાર થતા તો ભેંકાર લાગતું. ડાધુઓ અગ્નિસંસ્કાર માટે કોઈને લઈને સ્મશાનમાં આવે તો છાંયડો ન મળે. એટલે બધા અગ્નિદાહ આપીને આસપાસના ખેતરમાં જ્યાં છાંયડો મળે ત્યાં વિખરાઈ જાય. એક વર્ષ પહેલાં અમારા સ્મશાનની આ હાલત હતી. પણ તમારી મદદથી અમે સ્મશાનમાં વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા ને આજે સ્મશાન હરિયાળુ થઈ ગયું. લોકો હવે અમસ્તા સ્મશાને બેસવા આવી શકે એવું રળીયામણુ થયું.."

આ શબ્દો છે બનાસકાંઠાના ભરકાવાડા ગામના પૂર્વ સરપંચ જયંતીભાઈના. ગામમાં નિવૃત ફોરેસ્ટ અધિકારી ગીરીશભાઈ રાવલ રહે. એમના માર્ગદર્શન હેઠળ વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા ને એ પોતે સક્રિય રીતે આનું ધ્યાન રાખે. પરિણામે અમે રોઝી બ્લુ ઈન્ડિયા પ્રા.લી.ની મદદથી વાવેલા 2500માંથી 2471 વૃક્ષો આજે ઉછરી રહ્યા છે. જે 29 બળ્યા તે પણ આ ચોમાસે ગામે વાવી દીધા. 

ગામના હસમુખભાઈએ કહ્યું, બેન અમારા સ્મશાનમાં 45 જાતના વૃક્ષો અમે વાવ્યા છે. જુદા જુદા વૃક્ષો વાવીયે તો એ જમીનને તંદુરસ્ત રાખે અને પર્યાવરણ માટે પણ એ સાનુકુળ.

એક વર્ષ પહેલાં જ્યારે વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા ત્યારે દિવ્યભાસ્કરના પહેલાં પાને હેડલાઈન છપાઈ હતી. શ્વાસારોપણના નામે. આજ હેડલાઈન સાથે પછી આખા દેશમાં દૈનિક જાગરમાં છપાયેલું. 

એ વખતે મે પણ જાંબુ વાવેલો જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય એવડો થઈ ગયો.. 

ગામના હરિભાઈ અને ભીખાભાઈએ કહેલું કે, "બેન જવાબદારી પૂર્વક કહીએ છીએ જેટલા વાવશું એ બધા ઉછેરીશું.. ને સાચે ગામનો સંપ સરસ એટલે એકબીજાના પૂરક બની સૌ વૃક્ષોને સાચવે છે દર રવિવારે સૌ શ્રમદાન પણ કરે"આભાર રોઝી બ્લુ ઈન્ડિયા પ્રા.લી. અને ગામલોકોનો તમારી મદદથી અમે બનાસકાંઠામાં હરિયાળી પાથરવામાં નિમિત્ત બની શક્યા છીએ..

When the doctors detected his blood cancer, Piyush was barely one and half years old. He fought cancer, and after prolonged treatment, he was cancer free. However, the joy was short-lived; he is five years old today, and cancer has reappeared.

Piyush's father, Satishbhai, is a fruit and vegetable vendor. However, his business suffered because Satishbhai had to focus on Piyush's treatment. Since the treatment was underway at Ahmedabad's Civil hospital, there weren't any significant expenses. However, he still was required to be away from work, remain at the hospital for months, pay for more minor expenses, make arrangements for blood etc. Piyush was suffering from immense pain. Looking at their child undergo such pain, the parents too suffered in silence.

Piyush was at our office, and the team tried to uplift his mood, but Piyush could not even smile. The pain he was enduring had robbed him of the ability to smile.

The family stays in a rented house near Ahmedabad's Lambha. Satishbhai missed paying rent because he was busy attending Piyush. The landlord locked the premises.

VSSM has been helping Piyush find blood; I would share the appeal here on Facebook, and many of you have reached out. Our team member Kiran has been helping Satishbhai and Piyush under our Sanjeevani Arogya Setu program. When he learnt about their housing condition,  Kiran brought the father-son duo to our office upon their discharge from the hospital. So, of course, we will be helping them find a house. But what pained us more was cancer overpowering this small boy; his suffering pains us too. Prayers to the almighty to take away the pain Piyush is suffering…

પિયુષ પાંચ જ વર્ષનો.. એ દોઢ વર્ષનો હતો ત્યારે એને બ્લડ કેન્સર થયેલું. લાંબી સારવાર બાદ એ સાજો થયો. હાલ એ પાંચ વર્ષનો થયો અને બ્લડ કેન્સરે ફરી ઊથલો માર્યો. 

એના પિતા સતીષભાઈ શાકભાજી અને ફળફળાદી વેચવાનું કરતા. પણ દિકરાની સારવારમાં ધંધો સાવ જ બંધ થઈ ગયો. આમ તો સારવાર સિવિલમાં થાય એટલે ખર્ચ ઝાઝો ન થાય. પણ દોડાદો઼ડી ને અન્ય નાના મોટા ખર્ચ તો થાય. મહિનો દોઢ મહિનો સિવીલમાં સતત રહેવું પડે. વારંવાર બ્લડની પણ જરૃર પડે..મા-બાપ દિકરાના દુઃખે દુઃખી થાય પણ એ નાનકડુ બચ્ચુ ખુબ હેરાન થાય.

જ્યારે અમારા કાર્યાલય પર સતીષભાઈ એને લઈને આવ્યા ત્યારે એને હસાવવા સૌએ ઘણો પ્રયત્ન કર્યો પણ એના મોંઢા પર સ્મીત ન આવ્યું. મૂળ પીડા અસહ્ય. 

સતીષભાઈ અમદાવાદના લાંભામાં ભાડાના ઘરમાં રહે. પણ પિયુષ પાછળના દોડાદોડમાં ધંધો ન થયો અને એના લીધે ભાડુ ન ભરી શક્યા તે ઘરને તાળુ મરાઈ ગયું. 

અમે પિયુષને બ્લડની જ્યારે જરૃર પડે ત્યારે મદદ કરીએ. અલબત આ ફેસબુક પર જ લખુ ને તમે સૌ લોહી આપવા પહોંચી જાવ. 

અમારો કિરણ જે અમારા સંજીવની આરોગ્ય સેતુ અને સહાય કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત ગંભીર  બિમારીમાં પીડાતા દર્દીઓની સારવારમાં ખડે પગે રહે. તે સતીષભાઈને જ્યાં જરૃર પડે મદદ કરે. 

સતીષભાઈના ઘરને તાળા મરાયાનું કીરણને ખ્યાલ આવતા એ પિયુષને સિવિલમાંથી જ્યારે રજા આપી તે સીધા પિયુષ સાથે સતીષભાઈને અમારી ઓફીસ તેડી લાવ્યો.

મદદ તો કરવાની જ હોય એ કરી.. 

પણ નાના બાળકોમાં કેન્સરનું પ્રમાણ વધ્યાનું અમે જોઈ રહ્યા છીએ.. ને એમની પીડા અ્મને પણ પીડે છે.. ઈશ્વરને આ ભૂલકાઓનું દુઃખ હરી લેવા પ્રાર્થના..

The Kanai village from Sabarkantha's Himmatnagar reels under extreme water scarcity.

The community depends on lakes to quench their water needs. Hence, this year we partnered with the community to dredge the lakes. Come monsoon, and the rain gods also decided to bless the efforts.

The funds to support the lake deepening were funded by our dear Krishnakant uncle while the community lifted the excavated soil.

This year because of repeated requests, we ventured into Sabarkantha for the deepening lakes. All the three lakes we deepened have filled up well. Both agriculture and cattle will have enough to last a year, villagers have shared.

Water conservation is the moment's need; let us pledge to conserve every drop of water.

Thank you, to our dear Krishnakant uncle and the community, for their support. And a special mention for the efforts VSSM's Tohid has put in for these water conservation efforts.

આમારા કૃષ્ણકાંત અંકલે આ માટે મદદ કરી. ગામે માટી ઉપાડી.

બનાસકાંઠા સિવાય આ વર્ષે સાબરકાંઠામાં ત્રણ તળાવ કર્યા ને ત્રણે સરસ ભરાયા. ખેતીની બે સીઝનમાં અને પશુપાલનમાં તકલીફ નહિ પડે એવું ગામે કહ્યું.

બસ પાણીના ટીપે ટીપા ને બચાવીએ..
