Parvatiben Salat is a woman from whose life responsibilities just does not cease to exit. Parvatiben has been residing in the village of Vavdi since last many years. After the death of her husband at a very young age Parvatiben raised her 3 sons and 1 daughter single handedly. With whatever money she had she also managed to marry them off. But challenges continued to stay with her. Her elder son Govind got addicted to alcohol, his wife left him, he became diabetic but still he did not leave his habit of drinking.
Parvatiben’s second son also got addicted to alcohol, he along with his wife and daughter left home and settled in Gondal. The couple would fight everyday and their young daughter was at the receiving end of this marital discord. The couple would vent out their anger on the little girl, they would keep her hungry and beat her up often. Parvatiben would witness all this when she visited her son. She could not bare the pain of the young girl and here brought her along. The grand-daughter began staying with her. The third son just walked out of the house with his family and has settled in Junagadh. He has never looked back and inquired about the well being of his mother of rest of the family. As if all this was not enough Parvatiben’s daughter has left her husband and come back along with her two daughters. The reason being her husband’s alcoholism and physically abuse.
At the age when she had to sit back and relax Parvatiben has responsibility of a son, daughter and three young girls. A shattered Parvatiben happened to meet VSSM’s Kanubhai. The reason of meeting was getting a voter ID card but once Kanubhai got to know Parvatiben’s history he helped her with getting ration card and Adhar identification number as well. Getting all these documents was reassuring for Parvatiben but still sustaining the family was a difficult task for her.
Parvatiben and her daughter Bhanu were skilled at selling jewellery and cosmetics but since it involved capital investment they never took it up on continuous basis. Whenever Parvatiben had spare money say around Rs. 500 she would purchase some products like earrings, chains for neck, bindis etc. from the wholesale market and set out for selling in neighbouring regions. But this business did not bring more money and saving became impossible so she would get into collection scrape. His alcoholic son Govind would frequently get into a fight with her and take away whatever little money she had on hand, if she resisted he would sell household items to buy his daily dose of alcohol.
The meeting with Parvatiben helped Kanubhai understand the daily challenges she faced. Parvatiben felt that if se began the trade of selling cosmetics and jewellery the business will bring her more earning that picking up scrape. Kanubhai assured her that VSSM will provide her financial assistance to set buy stuff to begin business. However, Parvatiben refused to take any loan, ‘what if I can’t repay back?’ being her concern. Kanubhai counselled her and she agreed to go ahead with her business idea. Initially she took a loan of Rs. 5000. In October 2014 with capital hand Parvatiben stocked up her bag she takes along for selling with enough stuff. In the meantime her daughter Bhanu began going for picking scrap. Parvatiben’s business did well and she kept buying more stuff from money she earned. On November 15th, Parvatiben returned all the loan amount as she now had money on hand. It was a rather delightful news for all of us. We had to push her to build up her stock and take Rs. 3000 from us for the same.
Kanubhai also counselled Govind, who has since left drinking but his feet needed medical attention. His condition has improved following the treatment. He is asking Kanubhai to help him find some work. The small girls of the family who are school going age now have been enrolled in the Vavdi village school. The girls are regularly attending school. Parvatiben has a back account now and has already saved Rs. 2000 after paying the loan amount of Rs. 5000.
‘Had I not met you, life would have been difficult and very miserable. I had lost hope. But now things are looking better. They are falling in place. I want to educate my grand-daughters well so they do not have to face the miseries I have faced,’ says a rather relived Parvatiben. ‘Kanubhai, you are really good at counselling people to give up drinking, one more son of mine needs your attention and you have to make him give up drinking.’ she says with a smile.

હું લોન લઉં અને ભરી ના શકું તો? – પાર્વતીબેન સલાટ
વાવડીગામમાં પાર્વતીબેન સલાટ છેલ્લાં ઘણા વર્ષથી પોતના પરિવાર સાથે રહે. નાની ઉંમરમાં વિધવા થયેલા પાર્વતીબેનને ત્રણ દીકરા અને એક દીકરી. બધાના લગ્ન એમણે શક્ય સગવડ કરીને કર્યા પણ કર્મમાં દુઃખ જ લખેલું. મોટા દીકરા ગોવિંદને દારૂની લત લાગી ગઈ. એની પત્ની ઘર છોડીને ચાલી ગઈ. ડાયાબીટીસ લાગુ પડયો પણ દારૂની લતના છૂટી. વચેટ દીકરો પત્ની સાથે ગોંડલ જઈને રહ્યો. એને પણ દારૂની લત લાગી. એને નાની દીકરી થઇ, ઘરમાં રોજ રોજ ઝગડા થાય. પાર્વતીબેન એના ઘરે જાય અને આ બધું જુએ. નાની ફૂલ જેવી દીકરીને વગર વાંકે ભૂખ્યા રહેવાનું કે માર ખાવાનું એ ના જોઈ શકે. એટલે દીકરીને પોતાની સાથે લઈને વાવડી આવી ગયા. સૌથી નાનો દીકરો પોતાના પરિવાર સાથે આ બધી જવાબદારીમાંથી દુર જુનાગઢ જઈને રહ્યો એણે પાછું વળીને ક્યારેય પાર્વતીબેન તરફ ના જોયું. આ બધી કઠણાઈ ચાલતી હતી ત્યાં દીકરી ભાનુ પોતાની બે દીકરીઓ સાથે સાસરેથી પાછી આવી. કારણ પતિનું દારૂનું વ્યસન અને રોજરોજની મારઝૂડ.
જયારે ઘરની જવાબદારીમાંથી નિવૃત થવાનું હતું એ ઉંમરે પાર્વતીબેનના માથે ગોવિંદ, ભાનુ અને ત્રણ નાના બાળકોની જવાબદારી આવી. માનસિક રીતે ભાંગી પડેલા પાર્વતીબેનનો સંપર્ક vssmના કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ સાથે થયો. મૂળ તો મતદારકાર્ડ બાબતે આપણે એમને મદદરૂપ થયા પણ એમની સમગ્ર પરિસ્થતિ જાણ્યા પછી કનુભાઈએ એમને રેશનકાર્ડ અને આધારકાર્ડ કઢાવી આપવામાં મદદ કરી. આ બધું મળ્યું એટલે એ ખુબ રાજી થયા પણ પરિવારના સૌનું ગુજરાન ચલાવવાનું એમના માટે મુશ્કેલી ભર્યું બની રહ્યું હતું.
પાર્વતીબેન અને ભાનુ બંનેને શૃંગાર પ્રસાધનો વેચવાનું આવડે. પહેલાં એ કામ કરેલું પણ એમાં મૂડી રોકાણ કરવું પડે. એટલે જયારે હાથમાં રૂ. ૫૦૦ આવે એટલે પાર્વતીબેન કાચની પેટીમાં કાનની બુટ્ટી, ચાંદલા, ગાળામાં પહેરવાની ચેઈન વગેરે ખરીદી વેચવા જાય પણ એમાંથી બચત ખાસ થાય નહિ. એટલે ભંગાર વીણવા જાય. દીકરો ગોવિંદ સાથે રહે અને રોજ દારૂ પીવા ઝગડીને પૈસા લઇ જાય. ના આપે તો ઘરમાં પડેલી વસ્તુ વેચીને પણ દારૂ પીવે.
કનુભાઈએ પાર્વતીબેનની આખી સ્થિતિ જાણી. કટલરીનો સમાન વેચવામાં અને ભંગાર વીણી અને વેચવામાં કેવું વળતર મળે એ અંગે વિગતો સાંભળી. કટલરીનો સમાન વેચવામાં વધારે મળતર મળે એવો પાર્વતીબેનને વિશ્વાસ. કનુભાઈએ એમને સામાન ખરીદવા vssmમાંથી લોન મળશે તમે એમાં આગળ વધો એમ કહ્યું. પણ પાર્વતીબેને કહ્યું, ના હું લોન લઉં અને ના ભરી શકું તો? મારે નથી લેવી. પણ કનુભાઈએ સમજાવ્યા અને રૂ.૫૦૦૦ લોન પેટે આપ્યાં. ઓકટોબર -૧૪માં એ લોનની રકમમાંથી સામાન લાવ્યાં. ભાનુ પણ ભંગાર વીણવા જવા માંડી. પાર્વતીબેન પણ જેમ જેમ સામાન વેચાતો જાય એમ એમ નવો ભરતાં જાય. નવેમ્બર મહિનાની ૧૫ તારીખે એમણે રૂ.૫૦૦૦ કનુભાઈને પરત આપ્યાં. એમણે કહ્યું, આટલાં અમે કમાઈ લીધા હવે બધું ચાલશે. સાંભળીને અમે રાજી થયા. પણ કનુભાઈએ લોન પેટે રૂ.૨૦૦૦ પરત લઇ રૂ.૩૦૦૦ પાછા આપી વધારે સમાન ભરવા કહ્યું અને આવતાં
મહીને લોનની બાકીની રકમ આપવા કહ્યું.
ગોવિંદને કનુભાઈએ સમજાવ્યો એણે દારૂ બંધ કરી દીધો છે પણ એના પગમાં રસી થઇ હતી એટલે એ ઉભો નહોતો થઇ શકતો એની દવા કરાવી. હવે એની તબિયત સારી થઇ છે. એણે પોતાને કંઈ કામે લગાડવા કનુભાઈને વિનંતી કરી છે. ભાનુની બે અને એના ભાઈની એક દીકરીમાંથી બે દીકરીઓ જે શાળાએ જઈ શકે એ ઉંમરની છે એમને વાવડી ગામની પ્રાથમિક શાળામાં દાખલ કરી દીધી છે અને આ બંને નિયમિત શાળામાં જવા માંડી છે. પાર્વતીબેને બેંકમાં બચત ખાતું ખોલાવ્યું છે અને રૂ.૨૦૦૦ જેટલી બચત એમણે જમા કરાવી લીધી છે.
પાર્વતીબેનને કહ્યું, ‘તમે અમને ના મળ્યા હોત તો આ બધું કેમનું ગોઠવાત? હું તો જિંદગીથી હારી ગઈ હતી. પણ હવે સારું થશે. મારે મારી પૌત્રીઓને પણ ખુબ ભણાવવી છે. જેથી એમના જીવનમાં આવું વેઠવાનું ના આવે.. ’ અને છેલ્લે હસતાં હસતાં એમણે કહ્યું, ‘કનુભાઈ તમે દારૂ છોડાવવાનું કામ ખુબ સારી રીતે કરી શકો છો. મારો એક દીકરો હજુ દારૂના રવાડે છે એને પણ તમારે દારૂ છોડાવવાનો છે..’
