From Lobdi’s here to Teacher’s here, the journey has been a long one for Chaya…...

The wild and uncontrolled growth of ganda baval  shrubs and trees and amidst these trees on Ramol road lies Janata Plot and in the plot are homes of Meer families. This Meer settlement would witness lot of noise, uproar and  commotion whenever Chaya entered the settlement on her scooty. The kids would shout, ‘Come on, come on, Lobdi is here,’ and start gathering under one such thorny babul tree. It was time  for the school to begin. There was no black board, chair, table or anything that we would normally associate with a school. The children instead of studying would sing songs, play drums and dance their heart out. The entire four hours would be spend doing just this dancing and singing. Gradually, Chayaben began introducing numbers and alphabets to these children and while this dancing-singing and little bit of studying was going on if the water tanker happen to enter the settlement within seconds the class  would get dispersed.  This was how the school functioned. 

Today, when Chayaben enters the settlement the children shout the teacher is here, teacher is here……. and sometimes the children along with their school bags  would be already occupying their seats in the class of tent school/bridge school. 

‘લોબડી’ આયી થી લઈને ટીચર આવ્યા સુધી...

રામોલ રોડ પર એક અવાવરા જનતા પ્લોટમાં આડેધડ ઉગેલાં બાવળિયામાંથી સ્કુટી લઇ છાયા મીર વસાહતમાં પ્રવેશે કે ચોતરફ શોરબકોર મચી જાય. ટાબરાઓ ‘લોબડી’ આયી, હેંડો એવી બુમો પાડી ભેગા થાય અને એક ખુલ્લી જગ્યામાં, બાવળની નીચે વર્ગ શરુ થાય. વર્ગમાં બ્લેક બોર્ડ નહિ કે ખૂરશી ટેબલ નહિ. બાળકોને ભણવાને બદલે ખંજરી, ઢોલ વગાડવામાં અને ગીતો ગાવામાં – નૃત્યમાં ભારે  રસ. બસ એટલે ચાર કલાક રમતો, ગીતો જમતા જાય. છાયાબહેન આ બધાની વચમાં આંગળીઓ વડે સંકેત દ્વારા એક, બે, ત્રણ શીખવવું શરુ કર્યું. ત્યાં તો સાદ પડે ટેન્કર આયુ(પાણી આવ્યું).. બસ નિશાળ પાણી ભરવા જાતિ રહે. આમ નિશાળ ચાલતી રહી.

આજે છાયાબહેન પ્રવેશે કે શોરબકોર થાય છે .. ટીચર આવ્યા, ટીચર આવ્યા... અને ક્યારેક તો છોકરાં છાયા પહેલાં એમની તંબુ શાળામાં દફતર લઈને ભણવા આવી જાય છે... 

વિચરતી જાતિની એવી વસાહતો કે જ્યાંથી બાળકો શાળામાં જતાં જ ના હોય ત્યાં અમે બાળકોને  ભણવાની ટેવ પડે એ માટે તંબુ શાળા શરુ કરીએ અને બાળકોને ભણાવીએ. પાંચ કે છ વર્ષ શાળા ચાલે અને બાળકો શાળા જીવનથી ટેવાઈ જાય .. બસ છાયાના આ ટાગોર બાલઘરના બાળકો પણ ધીમે ધીમે ટેવાઈ રહ્યા છે....
