“We have been wandering across Banaskantha but have found no place to settle down. Our work also keeps us on the move. What would we eat if we were to lead a settled life? No one likes to watch snake shows now; enforcing the Wildlife Protection Act means we had to give up our traditional occupation of snake charming and look for other works. All these downs have made us understand the importance of a house. As a community, we decided to stay close to Banaskantha’s Diyodar. We may go anywhere but always come back to Diyodar to celebrate or mourn important events! We live on a government wasteland;  they can ask us to move out of it anytime they wish. Please help us find a place we can call our own.”

Many years ago, Hamirbha Nathvadi shared this with us. Consequently, we began working towards getting plots allotted for 110 homeless Nathvadi families of Diyodar. When we started working with them, the families had no identity proof. So, VSSM initiated the process of getting all the required documents like Ration Card, Caste Certificate etc., in place. There was a time our team member Naranbhai would lug a massive pile of papers whenever he was called at the government offices. The efforts of Naranbhai and Ishwarbhai resulted in the accomplishment of these tasks.

VSSM tried to ensure these families got plots allotted at any of the wastelands in Diyodar, but because there is no wasteland in Diyodar, it seemed like an uphill task. As a result, we had to make repeated requests and get a resolution for wasteland issued for the allotment of wasteland to nomadic families. Finally, the families were given plots in Lavana and Ludra. However, they were unwilling to move to any of these places mainly because it was hard to find work in the region. The issue reached district Collector Shri Anand Patel and DDO Shri Swanil Khare’s office. Both these officers are empathetic and compassionate towards the problems of the marginalised population. They represented this unique issue of Nathvadi families to the policymakers and got a new resolution issued primarily for Diyodar. As a result, the families were allotted plots in Diyodar itself.

However, 15 Meer families still await the allotment of plots. Hopefully, they too will soon receive the plots to build their homes.

It has taken 13 years for these families to receive plots. Many times they have lost patience and hope. Many families living on the banks of the Diyodar lake have had to lose their homes, but we had asked them to remain hopeful. And after more than a decade, their patience has paid off. The families will now begin the construction of houses on the allotted plots. They will be receiving government aid, and VSSM too shall be supplementing the required amount to build long-lasting pucca homes for these families.

Our respected Prime Minister has pledged to provide a house to homeless families by 2022, and these pathbreaking decisions result from this pledge. We are grateful to the Chief Minister, District Collector, District Development Officer, Additional Collector, Sarpanch and all the officials who have helped us turn this dream into a reality.

VSSM’s Naranbhai and Ishwarbhai are reeling under immense joy, and their efforts have finally paid off.

“આખુ બનોસકોઠા રખડ્યા. પણ કાયમ રેવાનો ચોય આશરો ના જડ્યો. પાસા અમારા કોમય એવા ન એટલ રખડવું જ પડ. તમારા ઘોળે ઘર પકડીન બેહી જઈએ તો ખઈએ હુ? પણ આ હરપ(સાપ)ના ખેલ જોવા કોઈન ગમતા નહીં. પાસુ જંગલખાતાવાળાએ પ્રતિબંધ કીધો. તે હવે બીજા ધંધા હોધ્યા. પણ આ બધામો અમન ઘરનું માતમ(મહત્વ) હમજઈ જ્યું. બસ એટલે બનાસકોઠાનું આ દિયોદર પકડીન બેહવાનું નક્કી કીધુ. ભલે ધંધાપોણી હાતર આખુ મલક ભમીએ પણ હારા ખોટા પરસંગ ઓય દિયોદરમોં જ કાઢવાના.

પણ બુન જે જગ્યાએ અમે બેઠા એ સરકારી. ગમે ત્યાર ખાલી કરાવ. માથુ ઘાલવા અમારી પોતાની જગ્યા મલ એવું કોક કરો...”

ગામે ગામ ફરી પોતાના પરંપરાગત વ્યવસાયના આધારે પેટિયું રળનાર હમીરભા નાથવાદીએ વર્ષો પહેલાં આ કહેલું. એ પછી અમે દિયોદરમાં રહેતા આવા ઘરવિહોણા 110 પરિવારોને પોતાની જગ્યા – પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે મહેનત હાથ ધરી. એ વખતે તો આ પરિવારો પાસે પોતાની ઓળખના આધારો પણ નહીં જે બધા એક પછી એક અમે કઢાવ્યા. રાશનકાર્ડ, જાતિ પ્રમાણપત્ર વગેરે કાંઈ કેટલાય લટકણિયા. અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ તો કાગળિયાના થેલા લઈને જે કચેરીએ બોલાવે ત્યાં હાજર થાય. એમની ને કાર્યકર ઈશ્વરભાઈ આ બેઉની મહેનતથી આ બધુ થયું.

સ્થાયી સરનામુ મળે તે માટે દિયોદરમાં પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે તજવીજ હાથ ધરી પણ દિયોદરમાં ગામતળ કે સરકારી ખરાબો નહીં. જ્યારે વિચરતી જાતિઓને સરકારી ખરાબામાં જગ્યા ફાળવવાની જોગવાઈ અમે સરકારમાં ખાસ કરાવડાવેલી. પણ જમીન નહોવાના લીધે ઠેકાણું ન થાય. આખરે લવાણા અને પછી લુદ્રામાં આ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ ફળવાયા. પણ ત્યાં આ પરિવારોને જવાનું મન નહીં મૂળ ત્યાં કામના પ્રશ્નો.

આખરે વાત આવી કલેક્ટર શ્રી આનંદ પટેલ અને જિલ્લા વિકાસ અધિકારી શ્રી સ્વનીલ ખરે પાસે..બેઉ ખુબ ભલા અધિકારી. એમણે સરકારમાં આ પરિવારોના પ્રશ્નની વાત કરી અને દિયોદરમાં નવું ગામતળ નીમ કરાવ્યું. જેના લીધે આ પરિવારોને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફળવાયા. 

જો કે 15 મીર પરિવારો હજુ બાકી રહ્યા અમને શ્રદ્ધા છે એમને પણ ઝડપથી પ્લોટ ફળવાશે.

13 વર્ષની મહેનત પછી આ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ મળ્યા. આવામાં વચમાં આ પરિવારોની ધીરજ પણ ખુટી જાય. દિયોદરના તળાવની પાળ પર રહેતા પ્રકાશભાઈ અને અન્ય પરિવારોના તો છાપરાં પણ તૂટ્યા. એ વખતે આ બધા ખુબ નાસીપાસ થયેલા. પણ અમે હિંમત આપી. સારુ થશે એવો વિશ્વાસ આપ્યો ને આખરે એ દિવસ આવ્યો. 

હવે આ પરિવારોના ઘર બંધાશે. સરકાર પૈસા આપશે ઉપરાંત અમે પણ મદદ કરીશું ને આ પરિવારો પણ પોતાની રીતે થોડા કાઢશે. આમ સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી સરસ ઘર થશે. 

વડાપ્રધાન શ્રી તમે સ્વપ્ન જોયું ઘરવિહોણાને ઘર આપવાનું એટલે આ સાકાર થયું. મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી, કલેક્ટર શ્રી, જિલ્લા વિકાસ અધિકારી, પ્રાંતકલેક્ટર શ્રી, સરપંચ શ્રી વગેરે પદાધિકારીઓનો ઘણો આભાર. આપ સૌની લાગણીથી આ બધુ સંપન્ન થયું.

અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ અને ઈશ્વરભાઈ બેઉ રાજી થયા. વર્ષોની એમની મહેનત રંગ લાવી.

In life, it happens with people we have seldom met or never met, yet we form special bonds with them. As a result, we also exercise certain rights and agreements in such relationships. Our bond with Banaskantha is one such…

A few years ago, we embarked on the journey to build water shrines in Banaskatha. The rocky ride of the beginning is turning into a smooth path as the team of VSSM now receives invites to work on the deepening of lakes with acceptance of all the pre-conditions VSSM puts forward. They tell us we have the right to put forward our conditions. And this awakening only makes us happy.

The lake at Arnivada village had ceased to exist, with no sign of its being. It had chocked under the uncontrolled growth of gando-baval and layers of soil accumulation. No one could tell that the site was once a lake.

The village leaders sent us an invite and agreed to accept all the criteria for dredging the lake in partnership. We began removing the clogs and muck that had overwhelmed the lake’s existence (as seen in the attached image).

I had the opportunity to visit the village when the dredging work was underway. The community gave us a warm welcome and their wish to allocate space for planting trees, but the town could not reach a consensus on the matter. We will be waiting for them to come an agreement, hopefully soon! I wish for a day when the villages wake up to the call of the earth and do their bit to preserve nature. 

કેટલાક લોકોને ક્યારેક મળવાનું થયું હોય અથવા ક્યારેય મળ્યા જ નહોઈયે  છતાં તેમની સાથે એક અનોખો નાતો બંધાઈ જાય. જેના લીધે કેટલાક હક પણ મળી જાય...ને હક હોય ત્યાં લાગણી હોય એટલે વાતને માન્યતા પણ ઝટ મળે..

બનાસકાંઠા સાથે આવો જ નાતો બંધાઈ ગયો છે. જલમંદિરોના નિર્માણનું કાર્ય અમે આરંભ્યું. હવે તો ગામો સામેથી પોતાના ગામમાં આવવા આમંત્રણ આપે ને આમંત્રણની સાથે અમે કહીએ તે શરતો મંજૂર કરે. શરતો મૂકી શકવાનો હક આપે. એનાથી વધારે રાજી થવાય.

અરણીવાડાગામ જ્યાનું ગામ તળાવ બાવળોથી ભરેલું અને પુરાઈ જવાના આરે. થોડું સાહિતીક રીતે કહુ તો બિચારુ મૂંઝારા અનુભવતું. મૂંઝારા અનુભવે એ વ્યાજબી. એક તો ગાંડો બાવળ પરેશાન કરે ને બીજા માટીના તો થર પથરાયેલા. આમ અસલ સ્વરૃપ જ નહોતું.

ગામે કહેણ મોકલ્યું, માટી ઉપાડવાની શરત મંજૂરી કરી ને અમે તળાવના મૂંઝારા દૂર કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. એક ફેઝમાં ખોદાયેલું તળાવ જોઈ શકાય છે.

ગામમાં તળાવ ઊંડુ થતું હતું તે વખતે જવાનું થયું ત્યારે લોકોએ વહાલથી સ્વાગત તો કર્યું સાથે વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા જગ્યા આપવા કહ્યું. ખેર પછી વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા બાબતે ગામની સહમતી ન આવી. પણ સહમતી આવે એની વાટ.... 

આશા રાખુ પર્યાવરણ માટે દરેક ગામ જાગે ને પોતાના ભાગનું કરે..

Mafakaka dressed in a soiled dhoti was seated outside his tiny shanty under the shade of an extended tin roof. He worked as manual labour until he had the strength to do so, but his ability to work and earn a living has considerably diminished with age. Impoverished and lonely, Mafakaka has no one in the family to care for him.

It pains us to add such adjectives, but the truth is Mafakaka depends on others for his basic needs. For example, his neighbours and others bring him food. 

Kaka wants to look after himself, “I will not refuse if others come forward to help me, but I cannot ask others to suffice my needs; I am not a beggar.” Kaka said with a very polite smile. I was impressed by Kaka’s dignified approach.

VSSM’s Rizwan got in touch with Mafakaka after learning about his condition. Consequently, we began sending him our monthly ration kit. Although old, Mafakaka can manage to cook for himself, and there are some days when neighbours share food, and he does not require to cook. “I am at peace now; I don’t need to stretch my arms for begging.” Mafakaka shared about his current living conditions.

A small kiosk owner opposite Kaka’s home sells milk and groceries; sometimes, he gives Kaka supplies he might need. Kaka  loves to  drink tea and smoke pipe/ chillam. It would be worthless to lecture him to give up his addiction to chillum but had he been receiving the government’s elderly pension and ration over his ration card, life would have been little less stressful. We will keep trying to ensure kaka receives the elderly pension.

It pains us when we see elders like Kaka. They lead a lonely existence, with no electricity or a decent roof for shelter.   A proper roof is essential, especially during monsoons.

VSSM has been supporting 270 elderly individuals who otherwise don’t have anyone to care for them; we provide them ration and also take care of their medical needs

મફાકાકા એક નાનકડી ઓરડીની બહાર પતરાનો થોડો છાંયડો પડે એમાં મેલું ઘેલું ધોતિયું પહેરી બેઠેલા. મજૂરી થતી હતી ત્યાં સુધી મજૂરી કરી. હવે કામ થઈ શકે તેવું શરીર અને ઉંમર નથી. પરિવારમાં કોઈ નથી જે એમની સંભાળ કરે. એ નોંધારા.. 

આ નોંધારા લખતા જ કાળજુ કંપી ઊઠે.. મફાકાકાને ગામના સૌ ખાવા આપે ક્યાંક પડોશી પણ સાચવી લે. પણ એ બધી ઓશિયાળી. 

કાકાની ઈચ્છા પોતાનું કાયમી કોઈ ધ્યાન રાખે એવી. પણ એ કહે એમ,  હું કોઈ પાસે કશું માંગુ નહીં. હું ભીખારી નથી. મન થાય ને લોકો મદદ કરે તો હું ના નહીં પાડુ પણ હું કોઈ પાસે માંગીશ નહીં...આટલું કહી કાકાએ સરસ સ્મીત આપ્યું જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ સકાય. મને કાકાની આ ખાનદાની બહુ ગમી. 

અમારા રીઝવાનને મફાકાકાની સ્થિતિનો ખ્યાલ આવ્યો ને એ પહોંચ્યો એમની પાસે. દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું અમે શરૃ કર્યું. કાકા પોતાની મેળે પોતાના જોગુ રાંધી લે. ક્યારેક કોઈ આપી જાય તો રાંધે નહીં. પણ એમણે કહ્યું હવે શાંતિ છે કોઈ સામે હાથ લાંબો નથી કરવો પડતો. 

એમને ચા રોજ જોઈએ સાથે એ ચલમ પણ પીવે. ચલમ છોડો એવું ભાષણ કાકાને આ ઉંમરે ન અપાય. પણ એમને સરકારનું વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન મળતું હોત અને રાશનકાર્ડ પર રાશન મળતું હોત તો એમને ઘણી રાહત થાત. 

કાકાના ઘરની નજીક એક દુકાન છે તે દુકાનવાળા ભાઈ બહુ દયાવાળા તે એ કાકાને દૂધ ને ક્યારેય અન્ય જરૃરી ચીજો પણ આપે.. 

પણ વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન મળે તે જરૃરી..અમે એ માટે કોશીશ કરીશું.

પણ કાકા જેવા માવતરોને જોઈને જીવ બળી જાય. ઘરમાં લાઈટ નથી. પતરા ચુવે છે.. 

સાથે એમની ઓરડી આગળ પતરાનું ઢાળિયું કરવાની જરૃર છે. જેથી એમને તડકાથી રાહત મળે. 

હાલ VSSM થકી અમે આવા 270 માવતરોને સાચવીએ છીએ. દર મહિને રાશન આપીએ છીએ. તમે  પણ આવા માવતરના પાલક બની શકો..

We had pledged to deepen and dredge 40 lakes this year; thanks to our team's hard work, we have fulfilled the pledge. Apart from Banaskantha, we have dredged three lakes in Sabarkantha and 1 in Patan.

Thankfully, the rural communities are waking up to the looming water crisis. They do not try to escape the responsibility of lifting the excavated soil; instead, they voluntarily come forward to ferry the soil in their tractors. Apart from it, they also contribute to deepening their lakes further.

A transition we can attribute to the ongoing water conservation and tree plantation campaigns VSSM has carried out since 2015. In the beginning, no one tried to understand or played heed to our appeals. The groundwater tables are dropping to an alarmingly low level, but because they continued to receive water by digging borewells and emptying the earth's belly, the communities felt no need to take measures for water conservation. However, there is an increased awareness of the looming water crisis, which is why people have begun recharging their wells, lakes, farm ponds, borewells and other water sources.

It is always better late than never, and the changing scenario makes us happy, nonetheless.

I was in Bhabhar's Nesda village recently. The lake in the village was dredged in partnership with Unidesign Jewellery Private Limited. The community, too, was responding with great enthusiasm. However, a minor canal of Sardar Sarovar passes 2.5 kilometres from the lake; the community has been requesting a connection to fill up the lake with Narmada waters. If the lake gets filled a couple of times a year, the depleted water tables may rise. 

We will be appealing to the government regarding the same.

However, like Nesda village, villages must take up the task of repairing water-holding reservoirs.

And we are grateful to all who have contributed to and supported the deepening of this and other lakes.

જલમંદિરો...

આ વર્ષે 40 તળાવો કરવાનો લક્ષાંક નક્કી કરેલો અને અમારી ટીમની મહેનતથી આ લક્ષાંક પૂર્ણ કર્યો. 

આ વર્ષે બનાસકાંઠા ઉપરાંત સાબરકાંઠામાં ત્રણ અને પાટણમાં એક તળાવ કર્યું...

ગામલોકો તળાવ ઊંડા કરવા બાબત હવે જાગૃત થયા છે. પહેલાંની જેમ માટી ઉપાડવા ટ્રેકટર અને ખોદકામ માટે જેસીબી તમે મુકો એમ હવે નથી કહેતા. માટી ઉપાડવાનું ગામલોકો સ્વયંમ ભૂ કરતા થયા છે. વળી આ ઉપરાંત ફાળો પણ પોતાનું તળાવ વધારે ઊંડુ કરવા આપતા થયા છે. 

બનાસકાંઠામાં પાણીની પારાયણ 2015માં શરૃ કરી એ પછીનું આ પરિણામ.. પહેલાં આ વિસ્તારમાં કોઈ આ વાત સમજવા જ તૈયાર નહોતું. મૂળ બોરવેલથી પાણી મળતું તળ ઊંડા જઈ રહ્યા હતા પણ તોય પાણી મળતું પણ હવે લોકોને સમજાઈ રહ્યું છે કે આપણે આપણી પાણીની બેંક ખાલી કરી નાખી છે.એટલે જ તળાવ, ખેતતલાવડી, કૂવા, બોરવેલ રિચાર્જના કાર્યો થવા માંડ્યા છે. 

બનાસકાંઠા પાણી માટે જાગૃત બન્યું એનો રાજીપો..

હમણાં ભાભરના નેસડાગામમાં જવાનું થયું. ત્યાંનું ગામતળાવ VSSM એ ગામની ભાગીદારીથી અને યુનીડીઝાઈન જ્વેલરી ઈન્ડિયા પ્રા.લી.ની મદદથી ઊંડુ કર્યું. ગામલોકોનો ઉત્સાહ પણ જબરો... તળાવમાં પાણીનો આવરો તો છે. સાથે અઢી કી.મી. દૂરથી નર્મદાની માઈનોર કેનાલ જાય છે. લોકોની માંગણી આ કેનાલમાંથી તળાવમાં કનેક્શન આપવાની પણ ખરી. મૂળ કનેક્શન હોય તો ચોમાસા સિવાય પણ તળાવમાં પાણી ભરાય ને આવું વર્ષમાં ત્રણેક વખત થાય તો પાણીના તળ જે 800 થી 1000 ફૂટે પહોંચ્યા છે તે ઉપર આવે..

સરકાર ગામની આ માંગણી પૂરી કરે તે માટે અમે પણ રજૂઆત કરીશું...

પણ નેસડાગામની જેમ દરેક ગામ પોતાના તળાવો- પાણી ભરવાના વાસણો સાબદા કરે તે આજની જરૃર.... 

આ તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવામાં મદદ કરનાર સૌનો આભાર...

We cannot afford to neglect our elders... So let's all turn Dahi Ma's wish into reality...

"Ben, next time you are in Harij,   I want you to meet a Ba whom we have been providing a ration kit every month." Mohanbhai had requested.

And that is what I did. We reached Vansa, walking through a paved lane. We arrived at a front yard gate and walked slightly uphill to find some people gathered around a house. The Ba whom we had to meet was seated on the floor dressed in an orange saree. The folks gathered around were Dahi Ma's maternal family. Vision-impaired Dahi Ma doesn't have a house, and she stays in a small makeshift place whose tinned roof leaks during monsoons. So it has been a challenged existence for Dahi Ma.

Dahi Ma's husband passed away long back, and her young son, too, had died three years ago. Hence, her family had come by to help her repair her shade by replacing the tinned roof with a cement roof rested on concrete rests. Dahi Ma's eyes had welled up when she remembered her son/ Although her family had been persuading her to come to stay with them, she to leave the soil her son had lived upon was not an option she wanted.

Sureshbhai had shared a word about destitute Dahi Ma to VSSM's Mohanbhai. Dahi Ma would beg for food, and Sureshbhai would provide in whichever way he could, but that was not enough. Since he knew about VSSM's Mavjat initiative, Sureshbhai requested to give a monthly ration kit to Dahi Ma. Eventually, we began sending a ration kit to Dahi Ma.

Dahi Ma manages to cook with the ration that reaches her; she no longer needs to beg for food.

"How are you Dahi Ma?" I inquired.

"It has been a great relief now that you have helped with the ration kit. I don't need to stretch my hand for food." Dahi Ma had said with tears rolling down her eyes. "The family will build a roof over my head, but it will not protect me from cold and rains." Dahi Ma wished for a small room to protect her from the elements.

As I bid her farewell,  I assured her of helping her build a tiny house. I had the strength to give her this assurance because of our donors' faith in us. It is challenging to spend the later years of life yearning for basic needs to be sufficed. Nevertheless, we will fulfil her need for a small house.

આમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈએ આ કહ્યું ને અમે પહોંચ્યા વાંસા. પાક્કી સડકવાળી એક શેરીમાં ચાલતા ચાલતા એક વાડનું કડલું ખસેડી અમે ઢાળ ચડ્યા તો કેટલાક માણસો ત્યાં ઊભેલા. જે બાને મળવાનું હતું તે કેસરી સાડી પહેરીને ભોંય પર બેઠેલા. જે માણસો આવ્યા હતા તે આ ડાહીમાના પિયરીયા. ડાહી મા પાસે ઘર નહીં. એ ઢાળિયામાં રહે. પણ ઢાળિયાના પતરા કાણા. ચોમાસામાં એમાંથી પાણી પડે. એટલે એ ખૂબ હેરાન થાય. વળી ડાહીમાને આંખે દેખાતું નથી.

પિયરીયા કાંઈ સક્ષમ નથી પણ સીમેન્ટના પતરાંને થાંભલીઓ લઈને એ ઢાળિયું બનાવી આપવા આવેલા. 

ડાહીમાના પતિ વર્ષો પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયા. જુવાન દીકરો ત્રણેક વર્ષ પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયો. પણ એનો આઘાત ડાહીમાને ઘણો. એ દીકરાને યાદ કરી રડ્યા કરે.પિયરીયાએ પોતાના ત્યાં રહેવા આવવા કહ્યું પણ ડાહીમા કહે, જ્યાં મારો દીકરો મોટો થયો એ ભોમકા કેમ છોડાય?

એ નિરાધાર. 

ગામના સુરેશભાઈએ મોહનભાઈનો ડાહીમા સાથે પરિચય કરાવ્યો. તેઓ ગામમાંથી માંગીને ખાતા. સુરેશભાઈ પણ શક્ય મદદ કરે. પણ એનાથી ચાલે નહીં. અમે આવા નિરાધાર માવતરોને દર મહિને તેમને ચાલે એટલું રાશન આપીયે એવી સુરેશભાઈને ખબર ને એટલે એમણે ડાહીમાને રાશન આપવા વિનંતી કરી. ને અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.

ડાહી મા એ રાશનથી રસોઈ કરી ખાય. આખો મહિનો રાશન ચાલી જાય છે એમને કોઈ પાસે માંગવા જવું નથી પડતું. ડાહી માને તમે કેમ છો એમ પુછ્યું તો એ રડી પડ્યા. ઓશિયાળી વેઠવાની તમે મદદ કરો તે હખ છે હવે એવું એમણે કહ્યું. એમની ઈચ્છા એક ઓરડી જેવું ઘર બને એવી. ઢાળિયું પિયરીયા બનાવી આપશે પણ એમાં ડાઢ ન રોકાય ને વરસાદની વાછઠ તો આવે..

હું એમને મળીને નીકળી ત્યારે કહેતી આવી કે અમે ઘર બાંધી આપવામાં મદદ કરીશું. મદદનો ભરોષો તમે સૌ અમને મદદ કરશોના આધારે આપ્યો... પણ આખુ જીવન આમ વલવલતું કાઢ્યું એમની ઈચ્છા ઘરની તો પુરી જ કરવી જ રહી. 

તમે પણ ડાહીમાનું ઘર બાંધી આપવા શક્ય મદદ કરજો.. સાથે મળીને એકમને ઘર બાંધી આપીશું. મદદની રકમ 9099936013 પર પેટીએમ કરી શકાય. અથવા નીચેના બેંક એકાઉન્ટમાં પણ ભરી શકાય.

“Bahen, please plant trees in our village; not a single tree will die. We will raise them well. I take personal responsibility!”

Many promise like so while inviting us to their village for tree plantation. But planting a tree and raising one are two completely different responsibilities. We plant saplings that need to be nurtured and raised like a child. If one fails to care for the saplings, they die in infancy.

Many villages succeed in performing the responsibility they take, but there have been instances where our team struggled to raise the trees.

But when Rameshbhai Gadaliya from Surana village came up with the above request, we knew we had to affirm his request. VSSM holds a special place for  Rameshbhai because he belongs to a nomadic community. There was also a strong emphasis on community’s support and contribution to the plantation drive. In 2021 we took up planting 4000 trees at Surana’s crematorium and school premises.

The trees are cared for by Chandubhai and his wife; however, you will find Rameshbhai at the crematorium even during the night. The village Panchayat provides water to these trees, but that happens in night because, during the day, water needs to reach the households. Hence, Rameshbhai keeps a vigil and ensures each tree receives water. Maybe that is the reason these barely-year-old trees look like young adults.

Every year to encourage and applaud the tree caregivers, we give awards to the best vriksh mitr and vriksh samiti. This year the community approach has been so appreciable that we are looking at some stiff competition.

The insects, birds and animals have already made this woodland their home as we spot hare and mongoose loitering around.

“Come, come… these wild lands have been created for you only,” we can’t stop ourselves from sending this invite to these fellow earth dwellers.

Rashelbhai from Rosy Blue India Private Limited provided the financial support to help us create this woodland. And the village community whose efforts have been instrumental in raising these trees, cleaned and fenced the site while also bringing water to the plantation spot.

If each village decided to create such woodlands of 25 to 30 thousand trees, Banaskantha would not need water from Narmada. Instead, the trees will compel the rain gods to bless them yearly.

"એક વખત અમારા ગામમાં વૃક્ષો વાવી તો જુઓ બેન અમે એને સરસ ઉછેરીશું.. હું વ્યક્તિગત જવાબદારી લઉ. વાવેલામાંથી એકેય બળવા નહીં દઉં"આમ તો આવા વચન પોતાના ગામમાં વૃક્ષો વાવવાનું અમને આમંત્રણ આપે ત્યારે ગામલોકો આપે. પણ પછી પાલન કરવું ઘણું અઘરુ. અમે તો બાલતરુ વાવીએ.. જે નાના બાળક જેવા. માની જેમ એની કાળજી કરવી પડે. ન કરીએ તો એનું બાળમરણ થાય.ઘણા ગામો આમાં સો ટકા ખરા ઉતરે.. પણ કેટલાકમાં કડવા અનુભવો પણ થાય ને ગામને મુકીને અમારી ટીમે ત્યાં મથવું પડે એવો વારો આવે..

પણ મને ઉપરોક્ત વાત જેમણે કરી તે સુરાણાગામના રમેશભાઈ ગાડલિયા. વિચરતી જાતિના એટલે અમારા માટે જરા એમને વિશેષ મમત્વ. વળી ગામ પણ સહકાર આપશે એવું એમણે ભારપૂર્વક કહ્યું ને અમે સુરાણાના સ્મશાન અને નિશાળમાં મળીને  4000 થી વધુ વૃક્ષો ઓગષ્ટ 2021માં વાવ્યા. 

વૃક્ષમિત્ર તરીકે ચંદુ ને એની ઘરવાળી કામ કરે. એ બેઉની મહેનત તો ખરી પણ રમેશભાઈ તો રાતનાય સ્મશાનમાં મળે. પંચાયત આ વૃક્ષોને પાણી આપે. પણ દિવસ દરમ્યાન ગામમાં પાણી આપવું પડે. સ્મશાનના આ વૃક્ષો માટે રાતના પાણી વાળવાનું રમેશભાઈ કરાવે ને પોતે રાતના સ્મશાનમાં હાજર રહે ને બધા વૃક્ષોને પાણી મળી રહે તેની ખાત્રી કરે. 

કદાચ એટલે જ હજુ એક વર્ષના આ વૃક્ષો થયા નથી છતાં એનો ઉછેર તરુણ જેવો થયો છે. 

અમે દર વર્ષે શ્રેષ્ઠ વૃક્ષો ઉછેરના અમારા વૃક્ષોમિત્રો અને વૃક્ષમંડળીઓને એવોર્ડ આપીએ.. આ વખતે અમારી સ્પર્ધા જબરી થવાની.. કોને એવોર્ડ આપવાને કોને નહીં એ મુશ્કેલીવાળુ છે. 

સુરાણામાં ઊભા થયેલા આ જંગલમાં કેટલાય જીવોએ પોતાનું ઘર ઊભુ કરી દીધું છે. કેટલા બધા પક્ષીઓએ પોતાના માળા બાંધ્યા છે. સસલા, નોળિયા વગેરે જેવા જીવો પણ આ જંગલમાં આવી ગયા છે.. આવો બાપ આવો તમારા માટે જ આ જંગલો ઊભા કર્યા છે એવું એમને જોઈને હરખાતા બોલાઈ જાય..

રોઝી બ્લુ ઈન્ડિયા પ્રા.લી. કંપની - રશેલભાઈએ અમને આ જંગલ ઊભુ કરવા આર્થિક સહયોગ કર્યો. જ્યારે ગામનો સહયોગ તો હોય જ એના વગર આવડુ મોટુ જંગલ ઊભુ કરવું મુશ્કેલ. સફાઈ, તારની વાડ, અને્ પાણીની વ્યવસ્થા એમણે કરી આપેલી.

બસ દરેક ગામ પોતાના ગામમાં પચીસ - ત્રીસ હજારથી વધુ વૃક્ષોના આવા જંગલો ઊભા કરે તો બનાસકાંઠાને નર્મદાના પાણીની જરૃર નહીં પડે.. વરસાદ જ પોતાની મેળે આવવા મજબૂર થઈ જશે...બસ સૌ જાગે એમ ઈચ્છીએ...

“Ben, our village reels under severe water challenges. 150-200 ft under the ground, we hit the rocks. To have water in our wells and drill borewells, we must keep our lakes healthy. Since the community here values water and understands its importance, it has always tried to dredge and maintain the lakes without any support from the government. Can you please help us deepen our lakes? this request to you is not to help us gratuitously; we will contribute to the efforts and lift the dredged muck/soil.” Mahendibhai from Sabarkantha came to us with this request.

Mahendibhai has requested us to visit their village for the last three months. Despite our efforts, we found it hard to make it to Kanai. Also, it was a village in Sabarkantha and we weren’t prepared to venture into a new region. However, we had our apprehensions because of our past experiences of false promises. Community leadership would invite us to work in their village, but they would back out when the contribution was requested.

Nonetheless, giving in to Tohid and Mahendibhai’s request, we visited Kanai village not just to see the lake to be dredged but also to see the site for tree plantation as promised.

The local leadership had arranged for a Gram Sabha where Mahendibhai introduced VSSM, its initiatives and its approach. The community agreed to contribute to the lake deepening and tree plantation drive. Although the water scarcity in the village is absolute, the availability of water would help them with agriculture and cattle farming. The unity at Kanai village is exceptional; we haven’t come across many proactive villages like this one.

Of course, there was an imminent need to deepen the lake in Kanai. Hence, we put in a request to Krishnakant Uncle, who immediately agreed to support the task.

We will be building ‘Sanjeev Jalashay’ with the contribution of the villagers.

The village has also earmarked enough land to plant 10,000 trees; if they can provide water, VSSM will plant trees on the allotted site.

We have initiated water conservation efforts in Sabarkantha; two lakes were deepened in the tribal region of Poshina (more on that later). But, of course, the desire is to have more proactive villages like Kanai.

સાબરકાંઠાથી...

"બેન અમારા ગામમાં પાણીની ખુબ મુશ્કેલી છે. 150 થી 200 ફૂટે કાળો પથ્થર આવી જાય. બોરવેલ ને કૂવા અમે કરીએ. પણ આ બધામાં પાણી આવે તે માટે અમારા ગામના તળાવો અમારે સાબદા રાખવા પડે. એટલે અમારા કનઈવાસીઓએ સરકારની મદદ વગર જાતે અમારા તળાવો શક્ય ઊંડા કરવા કોશીશ કરી છે. અમને પાણીનું મહત્વ ખબર છે. તમે અમારા ગામનું તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવા મદદ કરો. અમને મફત કશું નથી જોઈતું અમે પણ ફાળો આપીશું, માટી ઉપાડીશું."

સાબરકાંઠાના કનઈગામના મહેંદીભાઈએ આ કહ્યું. 

આમ તો છેલ્લા છ મહિનાથી એ પોતાના ગામમાં આવવાનું નિમંત્રણ આપી રહ્યા હતા. પણ સંજોગો નહોતો થતા. વળી અમે નવા વિસ્તારમાં જવા તૈયાર નહીં. મૂળ ભાગીદારીની વાતો ઘણા કરે પણ ખરા અર્થમાં ભાગીદારીની વાત આવે ત્યારે લોકો ફસકી જાય માટે નથી કરવું એવું મન બનાવેલું..

પણ અમારા કાર્યકર તોહીદ અને મહેંદીભાઈના આગ્રહને વશ તળાવ જોવા સાથે એમણે પોતાના ગામમાં વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા પણ એક જગ્યા આપવા કહેલું તે એ જોવા ખાસ ગયા.અમે ગામમાં પહોંચ્યા તો ગામે સરસ ગ્રામસભાનું આયોજન કરેલું ને સૌને VSSM કેવી રીતે કામ કરે તે મહેંદીભાઈએ સમજાવેલું. ગ્રામસભામાં સૌએ તળાવ ઊડું કરવા અને વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા શક્ય તમામ સહયોગની ખાત્રી આપી.

આખા ગામનો સંપ જબરજસ્ત. આવા સંપીલા ગામ મે ખાસ જોયા નથી. પાણીની સખત મુશ્કેલી. ખેતીની બે સીઝન એ લોકો લે. પણ ખેતી કરતા વધુ પાણી મળે તો પશુપાલન થઈ શકે તેવું તેમણે કહ્યું.

સ્થિતિ સમજી તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવું જરૃરી લાગ્યું ને અમારા ક્રિષ્ણકાંત અંકલ(મહેતા)ને મદદ કરવા કહ્યુ ને એમણે તુરત એ માટે હા પાડી. 

સંજીવ જળાશય અમે બાંધીશું ગામ પણ ભાગીદારી નોંધાવશે. સાથે લગભગ 10,000 વૃક્ષો ઉછરી શકે તેવી જગ્યા પણ ગામે આપી. ગામ પાણીની વ્યવસ્થા કરી આપશે તો વૃક્ષો પણ વાવીશું અને ઉછેરીશું. અને હા સાબરકાંઠામાં જળસંચયના કાર્યો શરૃ કર્યા. #પોશિના આદિવાસી વિસ્તાર ત્યાં આ વર્ષે બે તળાવ ગાળ્યા.. એની વાત ફરી ક્યારેક... પણ દરેક ગામોમાં કનઈ જેવો સંપ થાય તે ઈચ્છનીય...

“It was nine o clock in the evening when my phone rang. I answered the call; it was 75-year-old Natukaka from Visnagar on the other side of the phone. “what is this you keep promising? I have been listening to you telling us that we will receive plots, but you cannot even move a mole. How will you get us the plots? Stop giving us  false hope.”

“Kaka, what is the matter?”

“Why, what happened? Don’t you know I have spent my entire life wandering with my belongings? I had hoped to receive a plot, stay in a pucca house of my own, but you have done nothing to fulfil the hope.”

“Kaka, I can only put in the effort. Allotting plots is not in my power. It is the government’s job to give you a plot.”

“Rubbish…” and kaka continued to shower abuses!!!

When I spoke to Tohid about receiving the call, he immediately wanted to talk to Natukaka. I asked him not to. I can comprehend Natukaka’s frustration; he feels we can get the plot allotted to him and yet are doing nothing is also understandable.

Also, his desire to live in his own house before he bids goodbye to this life seems like a distant possibility. It is bound to make him frustrated and angry.

Natukaka must have met me many times after this episode, apologizing each time for his angry outpour. “It is your right to get angry, Kaka.” I would tell him each time.

VSSM’s Tohid appealed to the district collector’s office for allotting plots to Natukaka and other 121 families living in Mehsana’s Visnagar.

After years and years of efforts and interventions of a compassionate minister Shri Hrishikeshbhai Patel and the district administration, especially the collector, have resulted in the allotment of plots for these families. The families received documents to their plots in the presence of Minister Shri Hrishikeshbhai,  Education Minister (state level) Shri Kirtisinhji Vaghela, Additional Collector and other leaders.

Once the plots are allotted, we begin filing applications for housing aid. The families will receive government aid of Rs. 1.20 lacs, an amount that is not enough to build a decent house under the current construction costs. Hence, VSSM will also mobilize funds to help these families build their homes and move into a settlement built with love.

VSSM’s Tohid has put in massive efforts to ensure these families receive plots. The Visnagar administration has also played a very proactive role in this effort, for which we will always be grateful. 

એક દિવસ રાતના 9 વાગે મારા ફોનની ઘંટડી વાગી. મે ફોન ઉપાડ્યો ને સામે હતા વીસનગરના 75 વર્ષીય નટુકાકા. એમણે સીધું જ કહ્યું,

'આ તમે હું મોડ્યું હ્.. પલોટ મલશે મલશે એવું તમે ચાન્ના ક્યો હો.. પણ તમારાથી તો સેચ્યો પાપડેય ભંગાતો નહીં. પલોટ ચમના આલશો. ખોટી ખોટી આશાઓ વતાડવાનું બંધ કરો..'

'પણ કાકા થ્યું શું?'

'ચમ હું થ્યું.. તમન નઈ ખબર હુ થ્યું.. મારી આખી જીંદગી લબાચા લઈન રખડવામોં જઈ. મન હતું તમે પલોટ અલાવશો. મરતા પેલા એક વાર માર મારા પાક્કા ઘરમો રેવું'તું પણ તમે કોય ના કર્યું'

'પણ કાકા મારા હાથમાં પ્રયત્ન છે પ્લોટ આપવાનું કામ સરકારનું ને અમે પ્રયત્નો તો કરીએ છીએ..'

'એ બધી વાતો' એમ કહીને કાકા ઘણું અનાપ સનાપ બોલ્યા.. 

મે જ્યારે અમારા કાર્યકર તોહીદને આ વાત કરી તો એણે કહ્યું, હમણાં જ નટુકાકાને કહુ પણ મે ના પાડી.. એમનો ગુસ્સો વ્યાજબી એમને એમ છે કે આ બધુ તો આપણે કરી જ શકીએ છતાં કરતા નથી... 

વળી એમને મરતા પહેલાં પોતાના ઘરમાં જવું છે ને એ આશા એમને દેખાતી નથી એટલે ગુસ્સો કરે..

ખેર એ પછી તો નટુકાકા અવાર નવાર મળ્યા ને દર વખતે બેન તમને અનાપ સનાપ બોલ્યો માફ કરો એમ કહે ને દર વખતે હું તમારો અધિકાર છે કાકા એમ કહુ..

નટુકાકા ને એમના જેવા મહેસાણાના વીસનગરમાં રહેતા  121 પરિવારોને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે અમારા તોહીદે VSSM  ના માધ્મથી  કલેક્ટર કચેરીમાં રજૂઆત કરી. 

ઘણા વર્ષોની મહેતન અને આદરણીય મંત્રી શ્રી ઋષીકેશભાઈ પટેલ તેમજ મહેસાણા વહીવટીતંત્ર ખાસ કરીને કલેક્ટર શ્રીની લાગણીના લીધે આ પરિવારોને વીસનગર ગ્રામ્યમાં પ્લોટ ફળવાયા. આ બધાને ઋષીકેશભાઈ તેમજ આદરણીય શ્રી કીર્તીસીંહજી વાઘેલા શિક્ષણમંત્રી (રાજ્યકક્ષા), તેમજ પ્રાંત કલેક્ટર શ્રીની હાજરીમાં પ્લોટની સનદો આપવામાં આવી. 

સરકારની યોજના અંતર્ગત તેમના ઘર બાંધવા 1.20 લાખ મળશે પણ આટલી રકમથી ઘર ન બંધાય. આ માટે vssm પણ મદદ કરશે ને વ્યક્તિ પોતે પણ પોતાનાથી થાય તે રકમ ઉમેરશે. આમ સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી સરસ ઘર બંધાશે ને સૌ વગડાંમાંથી વહાલપની વસાહતમાં જશે..

આ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ ફળવાય તે માટે અમારા તોહીદની સતત દોડાદોડી.. સાથે વિસનગર વહીવટીતંત્રનો પણ સહયોગ આપના આ સહીયારા પ્રયાસ માટે આભારી છીએ..
