It is almost like a habit now, us writing to the concerned government offices on an almost daily basis to follow up on the pending files of various applications made for the nomadic and de-notified families. The responses the government officials give are so incoherent, it is hard to make sense of it even to us. Makes us wonder how poor illiterate applicants might comprehend such responses to their request for a ration card or BPL card, caste certificate or application for plot etc. The responses need to be simple, the applicants should be able to understand the steps taken by the department in response to their application or the instructions they have given to other departments etc while forwarding the files. At times we have requested for a simpler response but in vain. 

Recently, the response one of our applications received from Jamnagar DDO cheered us up. It was a response that carried proper instructions for the administrative team responsible for following it up. We were so happy to read the copy we received that we had to write a letter to the DDO appreciating his response.  

The poor and needy people of our country have minimum wants. They frequent the government offices for trivial matters. I have seen them visiting Sachivalay to complain about the non-issuance of ration card. 

As I always say, that even if I have lakhs of rupees I would feel helpless to help someone obtain a ration card but the person sitting in that government office has the power to do so. The files loaded with papers that arrive at the desks of these officials are connected to the being of those poor individuals. If we had put to ourselves in their place I am sure the resolutions to the matters concerning the poor of this country would not take years to accomplish. 

Sharing the image of the letter I have talked about, the one I have liked so much.  

સરકારી કચેરીઓમાં અમે વિચરતી જાતિઓના મુદ્દે પત્રો લખતા રહીએ અને કચેરીમાંથી રાબેતા મુજબ જવાબ આવતા રહે, જેમાં મોટાભાગે અરજીઓ નીચેની કચેરીઓમાં,

'આ અરજી પરત્વે નિયમોનુસાર કાર્યવાહી કરી અરજદારને બારોબાર પ્રત્યુત્તર પાઠવવો અથવા અમારી જાણ હેઠળ પ્રત્યુત્તર પાઠવવા' એ સબબના લખાણ સાથે મોકલવામાં આવતો વધુ જોઈએ...

આવામાં જામનગરના જિલ્લા વિકાસ અધિકારીએ અમારી અરજી પર નીચેના અધિકારી કેવી રીતે કાર્ય કરી શકે તે સંદર્ભે વિગતે માર્ગદર્શન સાથે પત્ર પાઠવે તે જોઈને રાજી થવાયું.. 

અમે DDO સાહેબને આ પત્ર સામે હરખ વ્યકત કરતો પત્ર પણ પાઠવી દીધો..

કેવી નાની નાની બાબતો માટે લોકો સરકારી કચેરીમાં આવતા હોય છે.. 

રેશનકાર્ડ નથી મળતુંની ફરિયાદ લઈને સચિવાલયમાં આવેલા માણસોને મે જોયા છે.. 

હું હંમેશાં કહુ છુ કે, મારી પાસે લાખો રૃપિયા હોય છતાં હું કોઈનું રેશનકાર્ડ નથી કાઢી શકતી પણ સરકારી કચેરીમાં બેઠેલા એ અધિકારી પાસે એની સત્તા છે.. 

એટલે ટેબલ પર આવતી ફાઈલોમાં રહેલા કાગળિયા કોઈ માણસના જીવતર સાથે જોડાયેલા છે.. એ જગ્યાએ આપણી જાતને મુકીને ફાઈલ જોવાનું કરીએ તો કોઈ વંચિતના કામો આમ વર્ષો સુધી ન થાય એવું ન બને...

આ પત્ર મને ખુબ ગમ્યો. એટલે અહીંયા એની નકલ મુકી રહી છું..

Lavana is one of my favourite villages. 

The village puts aside its differences when it comes to matters relating to the growth and development of the village, is one of the reasons it is my favourite village. And also overwhelming is the understanding and wisdom of its Sarpanch Ramabhai who never says no to undertaking any progressive activity. 

“Lavana has a vast expanse of open land, can we plant 10,000 trees there?” we asked Ramabhai. 

“Sure Didi we can!” he responded immediately. Not wasting a moment, Ramabhai geared up the community to level and repair 18 acres of land. They also build the barbed wire fence around it. I have travelled across many villages and know the leaders too it is difficult to find leaders like Ramabhai for whom at the core is the welfare of the village and its inhabitants. 

12,500 native trees were planted on three sites in Lavana village. Village school teacher Hirabhai and his entire family joined the plantation drive, Hirabhai’s two brothers have been appointed as Vruksha-Mitra. 

Dudabhai Rajput and Bhalabhai Chauhan actively supported the Ramabhai in his efforts. “We will always join hands and support the Sarpanch in matters of development,” said leader T. P. Rajput.

The expanse of land to be watered is huge hence, drip irrigation seemed the best possible option. We requested T. P. Rajput and community leaders to come forward to support. The Lavana community and its leaders aspire to make it an ideal village, we too have begun dreaming for the same. 

It has been anticipated that Laakni and Lavana will experience severe water scarcities in coming times. Not only has the underground water table depleted, but the quality of water has deteriorated as well. 

We are going to try our best not only to ensure that the rainwater is captured, stored but also that the waters of Narmada reach in this region. However, we also need to comprehend the role of trees in bringing rains and conserving the groundwater tables. Therefore, it is perennial we must plant and raise trees. As many as we can.

લવાણા મને ગમતું ગામ..

ગમવાનું મુખ્ય કારણ ગામના વિકાસ કાર્યો માટેની વાત આવે કે આખુ ગામ તમામ વિખવાદો મુકીને એક થઈ જાય...આ વાત મને સૌથી વધુ રુચી..

સરપંચ રામાભાઈ રાજપૂતની સમજણ પર તો ઓવારી જવાય. ક્યાંય કોઈ ચીજ માટે ના નહીં. 

'લવાણામાં ઘણી ખુલ્લી જગ્યા પડી છે. આપણે ત્યાં 10,000 ઝાડ કરી શકીએ? ' એવું રામાભાઈને પુછ્યું ને એમણે કહ્યું, 

 'જી દીદી થઈ શકે' એવું કહ્યું.

અમારી વાત થયા પછી તુરત એમણે કામ ચાલુ કરી દીધું. લગભગ 18 એકર જમીન એમણે ગામના સહકારથી સરખી કરી ને તાર ફ્રેન્સીંગથી એને કવર કરી

ગામના કલ્યાણની આવી ભાવના દરેક સરપંચમાં નથી હોતી જે મે રામાભાઈમાં જોઈ.. 

લવાણાની ત્રણ સાઈટ પર અમે 12,500 ઝાડ એ પણ આપણા અસલ લાવીને વાવ્યા. 

ઝાડ વાવવામાં ગામના શિક્ષક હીરાભાઈનો આખો પરિવાર જોડાયો. એ પછી વૃક્ષમિત્ર તરીકે પણ હીરાભાઈના બે ભાઈઓએ વૃક્ષોને ઉછેરવાની જવાબદારી લીધી. 

રામાભાઈને આ કાર્યમાં સક્રિય સહયોગ દુદાભાઈ રાજપૂત, ભલાભાઈ ચૌહાણે કર્યો.

ગામના આગેવાન ટી.પી.રાજપૂતે કહ્યું, 'જ્યાં જરૃર પડે ગામના વિકાસમાં અમે સરપંચ સાથે..'

આટલી મોટી જગ્યામાં ઝાડને પાણી પીવડાવવા ટપક હોય તો વધુ સારુ એ માટે ટી.પી. રાજપૂત અને ગામના અન્ય આગેવાનોને આગળ આવવા વિનંતી.

લવાણાને આદર્શ ગામ બનાવવાનું સ્વપ્ન તમે સેવ્યું એ સ્વપ્ન અમારી આંખો પણ હવે જોવા માંડી છે..

લાખણી - લવાણાના આ વિસ્તારમાં પાણીની સખત અછત આગામી દિવસોમાં ઊભી થવાની.. અહીંયા બોરના પાણી પણ કસ વગરના આવવા માંડ્યા છે.. આવામાં વરસાદી પાણીનો સંગ્રહ થાય ઉપરાંત સરકાર પણ નર્મદાના પાણીનો લાભ આ વિસ્તારને આપે તે માટે સૌ સાથે મળીને કોશીશ કરીશું પણ ત્યાં સુધી આપણા હાથમાં વૃક્ષો વાવોને વરસાદ લાવો એ સૂત્રનો આધાર છે. માટે વૃક્ષો વાવીએ ને એને ઉછેરીએ...

ફોટોમાં હીરાભાઈનો આખો પરિવાર જેમણે વૃક્ષોની વાવણી માટે ભારે જહેમત ઉઠાવી.. એમણે ખુબ પ્રેમથી અમને જમાડ્યા..

એ સિવાય સરપંચ અને અન્ય આગેવાનો જેઓએ વૃક્ષોના જતનની જવાબદારી સ્વીકારી છે..

My daughter just finished writing her first quarter exams. One of the subjects required her to write on the ‘Importance of trees.’

Trees give us wood, help for clouds and bring rain, they emit oxygen into  the air we breathe, they provide us shade, birds build their nest on them…!

There are countless advantages of having trees around, 9-year-old Kiara comprehended these many.

 All of us comprehend the fact that it is impossible to survive without trees, yet we have been felling trees without giving a second thought. The destruction our actions has caused to the environment is beyond comprehension.

To mitigate the situation in the areas we work, VSSM initiated a rainwater harvesting, water conservation and tree plantation campaign with the support from its well-wishing donors and friends.

The support from O2H firm enabled us to plant  1900 trees in Banaskantha’s Dhedhal village of Deesa block.

Bharatbhai, Sarpanch of Dhedhal village is supportive and fervent towards this campaign.

“This is a very noble endeavour,” the elders had expressed when I was in Dhedhal to monitor the plantation process.

VSSM ensures that the trees are cared and nurtured hence, appointing a Vruksha Mitra is non-negotiable.

The government wastelands that are full of wild babool trees need to be cleared and planted with native trees of our land. This mission needs to be picked up at multiple levels. We all need to do out bit to make our home green again.

 મારી દીકરીની હમણાં ત્રી માસીક પરીક્ષા ગઈ એમાં એને વૃક્ષની ઉપયોગીતા વિષે લખવાનું હતું....

એણે લખ્યું, વૃક્ષ લાકડું આપે, વરસાદ લાવવામાં મદદ કરે, ઓકિસજન આપે, છાયડાં આપે અને ઘણા બધા પક્ષીઓનું એ ઘર બને...

આમ તો ઉપયોગ આનાથીયે વધુ છે પણ નવ વર્ષની કિઆરા આટલું સમજી...

ઝાડ વગર જીવન શક્ય નથી એ આપણે સૌ જાણીએ..છતાં આડેધડ એને કાપવાનું થઈ રહ્યું છે.. પર્યાવરણ અસમતુલીત થયું છે..

આવામાં વૃક્ષ ઉછેર અને પાણી બચાવની ઝૂંબેશ VSSM સાથે સંક્ળાયેલા સ્નેહીજનો મારફત હાથ ધરી છે.

બનાસકાંઠાના ડીસાના ઢેઢાલમાં અમે 1900 જટેલા ઝાડ કર્યા છે. ઓટુએચ કંપનીએ એમાં સહયોગ કર્યો છે.

ગામના સરપંચ ભરતભાઈ બહુ ઉત્સાહથી આ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરે છે.

ઢેઢાલ ગઈ ત્યારે ગામના વડીલો પણ વૃક્ષો જોવા આવેલા તે એમને પણ મળવાનું થયું.. એમણે કહ્યું, આ બહુ પુણ્યનું કામ..

અમે વૃક્ષો વાવીએ અને તેને ઉછેરવા વૃક્ષમિત્ર રાખીએ જેથી એ ઝાડની બરાબર કાળજી કરે અને ઝાડ સરસ ઉછરે..

ગામે ગામ સરકારી ખરાબામાં જ્યાં બાવળોના જંગલ થયા છે જ્યાં જમીન બંજર પડી છે ત્યાં સઘન વૃક્ષારોપણની જરૃર છે..

લોકો ઝૂંબેશના રૃપમાં આ કાર્ય હાથ ધરે તેવું ઈચ્છીએ...

This monsoon its water, hope and cheer all around.…..

 “Ben, I remember how the young and the old in the village would come together and set out to clean the village lakes on Navoni Agiyaras. As a young boy, I too would be part of the entourage that went to repair the community lakes… these memories are from 30-35 years ago. The times have changed now people want water but do not wish to contribute towards maintaining  the water sources!!”

Bhagwanbhai, Sarpanch of Banaskantha’s Suigaum had mentioned this while we were discussing the water conservation efforts for their village.

The lake got filled up this year because rains have been sufficient in this drought-prone region of Gujarat.

It is impossible to drill borewell in Dudhwa village as the groundwater is saline. If the lakes fill-up the farmers can use the water in farming even after October. Also,  if the lakes fill-up it will prevent the salinity to rise further, the community had shared.

In this arid and drought-prone region,  farmers await rains more so after the lakes were deepened. Last year there were no rains in the region, the lake of Dudhwa  village remained dry but his year the rain gods have blessed them all, the lakes are brimming with water. In this saline regions, they cannot deepen the lakes instead of we have to widen them. “Ben, this year is going to be bountiful. We shall be able to take two crops.

The regions like Banaskantha that primarily depend on agriculture and dairy it is crucial to implement water conservation works on a wider scale. The simple people of this region survive on minimum needs. One good monsoon every 2-3 years is enough to sustain them for a couple of years.

I am grateful to the well-wishing dear ones of VSSM who have supported our water conservation efforts.

Environment and water conservation are non-negotiables now, it is better we realise the gravity of the emerging situation and act ASAP.

Thank you Rashminbhai  to draw our awareness towards this grave situation and guiding us through this entire initiative, respect your foresightedness to steer this entire effort. 

બેન મુ નેનો હતો તાણ નવોણી અગિયારસના દાડે ગોમમોં રેતા નેના મોટા ટૂંકમોં કોમ કરી હક એ બધા તળાવ ગાળવા જતા...

આ તરી પોતરી વરહ પેલાની વાત કરુ સુ. મુયે નેનો હતો તાણ તળાવ ગાળવા જેલો... પણ હવ કળજુગ શરૃ થ્યો. લોકોન્ પોણી તો જોવ પણ તળાવ ગાળવામોં ભાગીદાર નઈ થવું...

બનાસકાંઠાના સૂઈગામ તાલુકાના દૂધવાગામના સરપંચ ભગવાનભાઈએ એમના ગામમાં VSSM સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્વજનોની મદદથી ખોદાઈ રહેલું તળાવ ગળાતું હતું તે વખતે આ વાત કરેલી..

આ તળાવ કુદરતની મહેરથી આ વર્ષે એટલે ભરાયું.

દૂધવાગામમાં બોરવેલ શક્ય નથી. પેટાળમાં સાત થી દસ ફૂટે ખારુ પાણી છે. તળાવ ભરાય તો ખેડૂતો નવરાત્રી પછી આ તળાવમાંથી પાણી લઈને ખેતી કરી શકે. વળી તળાવ ભરાય તો જમીનમાં ખારાશ આગળ વધતી અટકે એવું પણ ભગવાનભાઈ અને ગ્રામજનોનું કહેવું છે...

આવા સૂકા દુષ્કાળગ્રસ્ત વિસ્તારોમાં તળાવ ગળાયા પછી મેધાની વાટ અમે બધા જોઈએ પણ એ વરસે મેધો ના પણ પડે.. જેમ દૂધવામાં ગયા વર્ષે વરસાદ જરાય ન આવ્યો. અમારુ ગળાયેલું તળાવ કોરુ ધાક્કોર રહ્યું. પણ આ વર્ષે ખેડૂતોએ કહ્યું બેન લહેર છે. ચોમાસુ અને શિયાળુ બેય પાક સરસ થશે..

આ વિસ્તારમાં તળાવ ઊંડા નથી ગળાતા પણ એને પહોળા ગાળવાના... કારણ પેટાળમાં ખારાશ છે માટે...

આવા વિસ્તારોમાં મહત્તમ પાણીના કામો થાય તે જરૃરી છે. જ્યાં લોકોનો જીવવાનો આધાર માત્ર ખેતી અને પશુપાલન છે..

લોકો બહુ ઓછી જરૃરિયાતો સાથે જીવે છે. બે ત્રણ વર્ષે એક ચોમાસુ સારુ આવી જાય તો બે વર્ષ જીવી જવાય એવું એ લોકો કહે...

આવા આ વિસ્તારમાં મદદરૃપ થનાર પ્રિયજનોનો આભાર માનુ છું...

પાણી અને પર્યાવરણ બેયની ચિંતા કરવી આજના સમયની તાતી જરૃર છે. સમાજ, લોકો આ બાબતે જાગૃત થાય તેમ ઈચ્છીએ...

થેક્યુ રશ્મીનભાઈ તમે આ પાણી બાબતે અમને જગાડ્યા ને અમે આ કરી શક્યા... આપની દુરંદેશીને પ્રણામ...

VSSM became instrumental in providing ration and feed to the elderly...

 In 2004 while I was travelling across the villages of South Gujarat to study the condition of tribal working as workers on sugarcane farms I came across Gandhi cap-wearing elderly kaka who had tightly tied a stole around his waist.

“Kaka, why have you tied this stole around your waist?”

“So that I do not hear my hunger speak!”

It was difficult to even watch this elder gentlemen reeling under such situation.

“Governments across the world are searching for a stole like that!” I remember to have remarked  jokingly.

There was no one to look after Kaka. There are numerous such elderly living around us as well. They worked to fend themselves but now as age takes over and their energy levels don’t match up, they are in capable to put in hard labour through the day. Many such poor elderly take up begging. It pains to see such elderly human beings stretch their hands in distress, unable to live with dignity.

 I have always believed it is our responsibility to take care of this section of our population. Yes, they do get government pensions but they can hardly suffice the expenses towards food, medication and living!! A couple of years back VSSM initiated a program to feed and provide ration and food to the elderly. VSSM became instrumental in providing ration to 100 while cooking-feeding 15 seniors. We say instrumental because it is our well-wishing donors who support the initiatives.

Recently, VSSM’s Ramesh handed ration kits to 19 Devipujak families living in Saapar village in Amreli’s Bagasara. Some families take and secure their ration kits in a trunk as they have no other place to keep it safe.

Every time a team member reaches such families with ration they are showered with blessings.

 VSSM team members put in a lot of efforts to identify such deserving elderly. Hope we as a society can take up the responsibility of such small needs of the population around us, no one might have to sleep hungry.

2004માં હું દક્ષીણ ગુજરાતમાં શેરડી કામદારોની સ્થિતિ જાણવા આદિવાસીઓના ગામોમાં ફરી રહી હતી તે વેળા ગડત ગામમાં મને ગાંધી ટોપી પહેરી, પેટ પર કસકસાવીને કપડું બાંધલેું એવા એક કાકા મળ્યા. મે એમને પૂછ્યું કાકા કપડું કેમ બાંધ્યું છે ત્યારે કાકાએ કહેલું,

'ભૂખનો અવાજ સંભળાય નહીં એ માટે...'

કેવી કપરી સ્થિતિ.. ત્યારે જરા મજાકમાં કહેલું આવું કપડું તો વિશ્વભરની સરકારો શોધી રહી છે...

પણ આ કાકાની ચાકરી કરી શકે એવું પાછળ કોઈ હતું નહીં.

આપણી આસપાસ પણ આવા ઘણા વડીલો રહે છે. જેઓ મજૂરી કરીને પેટિયું રળતા. પણ હવે કામ થઈ શકે એવી સ્થિતિ નથી.. એટલે ભીખ માંગીને પુરુ કરે છે.. આવા માવતરોને જોવું ત્યારે જીવ બળી જાય..

સમાજ તરીકે આપણી ફરજ ખરી એવો પ્રશ્ન હંમેશાં થાય.. સરકાર પૈસા આપે પણ એનાથી ખાવા, પીવા, દવા વગેરે બધુ ન થાય...

અમે આવા વડીલોને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.

100 વડીલોને દર મહિને રાશન ને 15 જણને એક રસોડે જમવાનું આપવામાં VSSM નિમિત્ત બને છે..

આમ તો આ બધુ સંસ્થાને મદદરૃપ થતા પ્રિયજનોના સહયોગથી થાય.. અમે તો નિમિત્ત માત્ર..

તાજેતરમાં અમરેલીના બગસરામાં તેમજ સાપરગામમાં રહેતા સરાણિયા અને દેવીપૂજક સમુદાયના 19 પરિવારોને કાર્યકર રમેશના હસ્તે રાશન આપવામાં આવ્યું.

રાશન લેનાર કેટલાક તો રાશનને લઈને ટંકમાં તાળું મારીને મુકી દે છે. એમની પાસે અન્ય સગવડ આ રાશન સાચવવાની નથી..

ઢગલો આશિર્વાદ જ્યારે કાર્યકર એમના ત્યાં રાશન લઈને પહોંચે ત્યારે એ આપે..

કાર્યકરો પણ આવા વડીલોને શોધવા ભારે જહેમત ઊઠાવે... ખેર સમાજ તરીકે આપણે બધા ભેગા થઈને આવી નાની નાની જવાબદારીઓ સ્વીકારી લઈએ તો કોઈએ ભૂખ્યું સુવુ ન પડે...

As we observe De-Notified Day today, hoping the nomadic and de-notified tribes gain freedom in the real sense!!...

Many of you will be surprised to learn that there were numerous communities of our country which did not gain independence on 15th August 1947. The British Raj had listed some tribes of India as ‘notified tribes’ ads they deemed their occupations as  criminal/unlawful. Once the tribe became ‘notified’ they were required to compulsorily notify themselves before the local magistrate or police.  Even the children born in these tribes were deemed born criminals. A person can be termed criminal in life only if he/she takes up unlawful activities but to term someone criminal just because they were born into a particular community is a highly offending act.

The ’notified tribes’ did not even have the empathy of civil society who did not comprehend the need to dispute this law. The communities remained ‘notified’ until 31st August 1952 when the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ‘de-notified’ these so-called criminal communities!!

 The fences around their settlements were removed, they were freed from the mandatory rule of marking their presence daily at police-station hence, the de-notified communities of our country celebrate their independence day on 31st August.

 Sadly, the communities in spite of being freed from all the ‘notified’ remained excluded from the development story of India as measures for their rehabilitation were never formed or launched by any of the governments. Even today,  these communities struggle to achieve even their basic needs.

 The de-notified tribes have united to draw attention towards their plights, thankfully their voice has reached the administrators and those in power. We wish them the best on the occasion of their freedom from one of the most crippling laws to their progress. May they achieve freedom from hunger, poverty and marginalisation too.

અને ખરા અર્થમાં વિચરતા વિમુક્ત સમુદાયોને આઝાદી મળે તેવી અભ્યર્થના...

તમને જાણીને નવાઈ લાગશે કે આપણ દેશમાં એવા કેટલાક સમુદાયો છે કે જેઓ 15 ઓગષ્ટ 1947ના રોજ આઝાદ નહોતા થયા..અંગ્રેજો દેશમાં આવ્યા ને એમણે આખા દેશમાં 200 જાતિઓને ક્રિમીનલ ટ્રાઈબ્લ એકટ - 1871 હેઠળ વાડા (સેટલમેન્મેન્ટ)માં પૂરી, સવાર સાંજ પોલીસ સ્ટેશનમાં કે પોલીસ પટેલ પાસે તેમની હાજરી ફરજિયાત કરી.

તે ત્યાં સુધી કે આ સમુદાયમાં જન્મનાર નાના બાળકને પણ જન્મજાત ગુનેગાર માની લેવામાં આવતું. કોઈ વ્યક્તિ ગુનેગાર હોઈ શકે પણ એ વ્યક્તિ જે જાતિમાં જન્મયો હોય તે જાતિને જ ગુનેગાર માનવી તે જરાય યોગ્ય નહોતું.

સમાજમાંથી આ સમુદાય પ્રત્યે અનુકંપા દાખવી કોઈએ આ કાળા કાયદાનો વિરોધ નોંધાવાનું પણ ન કર્યું..

આ સ્થિતિ છેક 1952 સુધી રહી. 1952ની 31 ઓગષ્ટના રોજ તે વખતના વડાપ્રધાન શ્રી પંડિત જવાહારલાલ નહેરુએ નોટીફાઈટ - ગુન્હાહીત ગણવામાં આવેલા સમુદાયોને ડી નોડીફાઈડ કર્યા. એટલે કે વિમુક્ત કર્યા.

તેમના વસવાટની ફરતે કરવામાં આવેલી વાડ કાઢી નાખવામાં આવી, તેમને હાજરી ભરાવવામાંથી મુક્તિ આપવામાં આવી. એટલે આપણા દેશમાં રહેતા વિમુક્ત સમુદાયો તેમનો આઝાદીનો દિવસ 31 ઓગષ્ટના રોજ ઊજવે છે. 15 ઓગષ્ટે દેશ આઝાદ થયો પણ આ સમુદાયને ખરી આઝાદી 31 ઓગષ્ટે મળી.

જો કે 31 ઓગષ્ટના રોજ આઝાદ થયા, તેમને હાજરી ભરાવવામાંથી કે સેટલમેન્ટમાંથી મુક્ત કરાયા પણ તેમના પુનઃવસન માટે થવા જોઈતા પ્રયત્નો ન થયા... આજે પણ આ સમુદાય પ્રાથમિક જરૃરિયાતો માટે ઝઝૂમી રહ્યો છે..

પણ હવે આ સમાજ સંગઠીત થયો છે.. સત્તા સ્થાને તેમનો અવાજ પહોંચ્યો છે..આવા આ સમુદાયના પ્રિય એવા સૌને વિમુક્ત દિવસની ખુબ શુભેચ્છા..

2006માં વિચરતી વિમુક્ત જાતિઓનું સમેલન કરેલું તે વેળા ઉપસ્થિત સૌએ જયધોષ કરેલો તેનો ફોટો...

The rains are finally here, although not as much but still better....

The rains are finally here, although not as much but still better. In Banaskantha and north Gujarat, they are better than the past couple of years but not as much to fill up the newly deepened lakes. The lakes haven’t brimmed up but they aren’t dry either. And to our great joy, some have overflowed.

We had deepened the  Hanuman lake at Banaskantha’s  Makhaanu lake. The lake has received and contained a good amount of rainwater. Bhanabhai, the Sarpanch of Makhaanu village is a progressive and responsible leader,  so are the villagers.

 The communities are eagerly awaiting the rains, hope rain gods hear to their prayers!! 

VSSM, with the support of its well-wishers, also initiated tree plantation drive in this village and went on to plant 4000 trees at two areas in the village. A Vruksh-Mitra is appointed to care and nurture the saplings,  while the village leaders will ensure the trees are well looked after.

We hope everyone wakes up to the need of the hour to care and protect the environment and conserve water!!

મેધરાજાની મહેરા ઉત્તર ગુજરાત એમાંય ખાસ કરીને બનાસકાંઠામાં જોઈએ એવી નથી થઈ છતાં છેલ્લા બે વર્ષ કરતા આ વર્ષે વરસાદ સારો રહ્યો. 

તળાવો એકદમ નથી ભરાયા પણ સાવ કોરા ધાકોર પણ નથી રહ્યા.. 

તો ક્યાંક વળી છલકાયા પણ ખરા...

બનાસકાંઠાના મખાણુનું હનુમાન તળાવ અમે ગાળ્યું... એમાં સરસ પાણી આવ્યું. 

ગામલોકોએ સહયોગ પણ સરસ કર્યો. સરપંચ ભાણાભાઈ પણ ખુબ જાગૃત.. 

લોકો હજુએ મેધાની વાટ જુએ છે.. ઈશ્વર તેમની ઈચ્છા પૂર્ણ કરે..

આ ગામમાં જ અમે 4000 વૃક્ષો ગામની બે જગ્યા પર VSSM સાથે સંક્ળાયેલા સ્નેહીજનની મદદથી વાવ્યા હવે એને ઉછેરીશું... જે માટે પગારદાર માણસ વૃક્ષમિત્ર તરીકે રાખ્યા છે...

દરેક ગામ પાણી અને પર્યાવરણ માટે જાગૃત થાય તે આજના સમયની તાતી જરૃર...

આશા રાખીએ સૌ જાગે..

બાકી તળાવ ગાળ્યા વખતના અને ગામલોકો સાથે પણ આ બાબતે થયેલી બેઠકના ફોટો લખ્યું એ બધું સમજાય એ માટે મૂક્યા..

The eager wait for the rains finally comes to an end….

 The rain Gods have been generous this year.

“It hardly rains here in Banaskantha, how will the lakes fill up?” was the prompt reply whenever we talked about deepening of lakes with the communities of Banaskantha.

However, a good monsoon once in a couple of years is enough to overflow the lakes.

The lakes VSSM excavates and deepens has sand at the bottom hence water percolates easily into the ground, so even if the lakes overflow twice or thrice during the season lakhs of litres of water seeps into the ground.

Along with the regular cleaning and deepening of the lakes, it is important to keep the sources and channels feeding the lakes also be kept clean and unblocked. The farmers have unknowingly blocked the natural streams that flowed into the lakes. Under such circumstances, the lakes fail to brim up even during good monsoons.

 I request the informed and aware farmers of the villages to visit the lakes during monsoons and if possible try to unblock and clean the waterways feeding the lakes. It is our responsibility to harvest thousands of litres of water we are receiving for free and without any efforts.

 We had deepened the lake of Banaskantha’s Aakoli Thakorwas, it brought immense joy to watch it overflow. 

The lake here had filled up with mud almost to the level of the ground, we excavated 19,875 cubic meters of mud and deepened the lake. The lake has filled up with 1,98,75,000 litres of water, it is still raining and water is percolating into the ground.

 It is the consistent hard work of VSSM’s Banaskantha team leader Naran and team members Chirag and Ishwar resulting into such marvellous achievements.

 We are grateful to Jewelex Foundation and the Government of Gujarat for the support they have provided for lake deepening efforts. 

આખરે મેધરાજાએ મહેર કરી...

બનાસકાંઠામાં તળાવ ગાળવાનું લોકોને કહીએ તો પહેલો પ્રશ્ન કરતા અમારા વિસ્તારમાં જોઈએ એવો વરસાદ ક્યાં પડે છે? તળાવ ભરાશે કેવી રીતે?

પણ બે ત્રણ વર્ષે એક ચોમાસુ એવું સરસ આવે કે આ તળાવો છલોછલ થઈ જાય..

વળી અમે જે તળાવો ગાળીએ એમાં મોટાભાગે નીચે રેત હોય એટલે પાણી જમીનમાં ઝટ ઊતરી જાય. આમ વરસાદી સીઝનમાં ત્રણેક વખતે પણ પાણી ભરાય તો લાખો લીટર પાણી ભૂગર્ભમાં ઊતરે...

તળાવમાં પાણી આવવાના આવરા બરાબર સરખા કરવાની જરૃર છે. ક્યાંક ખેડૂતો એ આવરાને જ બંધ કરી દીધા છે. આમ ન કરવું.. આનાથી તળાવ તપેલી જેવું થઈ જાય એમાં પાણી આવવાના રસ્તા બંધ થઈ જશે અને મેઘરાજાએ કરેલી મહેરનું પરિણામ નહીં મળે..

ચાલુ વરસાદે ગામના જાગૃત ખેડૂતો તળાવની મુલાકાત લે અને જરૃર પડે ટ્રેક્ટરથી પાણીનો આવરો તળાવમાં વાળવાનું કરવા વિનંતી કરીએ છું..

હજારો લીટર પાણી આપણને કશીયે મહેનત વગર મળી રહ્યું છે એ ખાલી વહી ન જાય તે જોવાની જવાબદારી આપણી...

અહીંયા તળાવ જેવું કશું હતું જ નહીં. અમે 19,875 સીએમટી માટી આ તળાવમાંથી કાઢી અને તળાવ ઊંડુ કર્યું.આ તળાવમાં અત્યારે 1,98,75,000 લીટર પાણી ભરાયું અને હજુ વરસાદ પડી રહ્યો છે. પાણી જમીનમાં ઊતરી રહ્યું છે...

Our work defines us who we are!!

The Covid19 and its aftermath have created extraordinary circumstances in our lives. It has shaken us to the core. The lockdown imposed by the Government to control the virus from spreading further worsened the condition of daily wage-earning labourers. 

As always, VSSM chose to stand beside these poor families who most needed food and grains. The support we received from our well-wishing donors and friends helped us provide grain kits to thousands of families. The administration also remained proactive throughout the lockdown. The officials helped whenever requested their assistance, reaching with ration to the regions and families in need. 

The COVID brought us all together to battle our common enemy, we chose to stand beside each other and perform the role of a duty-bound citizen! There were no expectations or applaud that we were seeking. Nonetheless, the administration took note of our involvement. On 15th August our Independence Day, Patan and Banaskantha administration felicitated VSSM’s Mohanbhai and Naranbhai for their tremendous hard work. We are grateful to the Government for recognising these efforts. 

The applause is for each one of you who supported us reach the families in need. Always grateful for your trust in us and the support you provide. 

Our heartiest congratulations to Mohanbhai and Naranbhai. Each recognition and felicitation brings with it loads of responsibility, I guess we have a duty to carry the faith forward. 

વ્યક્તિ પોતાના કાર્યોથી ઊજળી...

કોરોનાનો કાળો કેર આપણે કોઈએ ઈચ્છયો નહોતો છતાં કોણ જાણે ક્યાંથી આવ્યો ને બધાની જિીંદગી હાલક ડોલક કરી નાખી..

સરકારે કોરોના ફેલાતો અટકે એ માટે લોકડાઉનનો રસ્તો અખત્યાર કર્યો. એ વખતે રોજે રોજ લાવીને કમાનારા પરિવારોની સ્થિતિ બહુ કપરી થયેલી..

VSSM તો હંમેશાં વંચિતોની સેવામાં કાર્યરત. આવા ટાણે એ પાછી શાને રહે.

સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા શુભેચ્છકોની મદદથી હજારો લોકોને રાશન આપવામાં અમે નિમિત્ત બન્યા.. વહીવટીતંત્ર પણ ખડે પગે રહ્યું. અમે પણ જ્યાં સરકારની મદદ માંગી અમને મદદ મળી ક્યાંક તો આંગળી ચિંધી અને અધિકારીગણ રાશન સાથે ત્યાં પહોંચ્યા.

ટૂંકમાં ખભે ખભા મીલાવી આફતની ઘડીનો સામનો કરવાનું દેશના અદના નાગરિક હોવાના નાતે પોતાની ફરજના ભાગરૃપ સૌએ કર્યું.

આ બધુંયે કોઈ અપેક્ષા વગર અનાયાસે જ થયું.. પણ વહીવટીતંત્ર - સરકારે એની નોંધ લીધી.

15મી ઓગષ્ટ સ્વાતંત્રદિનની ઊજવણી નિમિત્તે પાટણ તેમજ બનાસકાંઠામાં કાર્યરત અમારા બે કર્મઠ કાર્યકરો મોહનભાઈ અને નારણભાઈનું સન્માન વહીવટી તંત્ર દ્વારા થયું.. આભાર તંત્ર..

આ સન્માન મદદ કરનાર સૌનું.. અમે તો આમાં નિમિત્તમાત્ર હતા. મૂળ તો આપે આપ્યું અમે તો ફક્ત વહેંચ્યું... આપની મદદ માટે આભાર..

સ્નમાન મેળવનાર મોહનભાઈ અને નારણને ઢગલો શુભેચ્છાઓ, દરેક સન્માન એક વિશેષ જવાબદારી પ્રત્યે સભાન કરે છે.. એ સભાનતા સાથે આ સન્માનનો સાદર સ્વીકાર..

VSSM initiated water and environment conservation efforts in Banaskantha. The flow of work has made leaders and communities from other regions demand the same efforts in their areas too. Hopefully, next year we shall commence works in Surendranagar.

Until then,  we continue to devote our time and efforts for a greener and water sufficient Banaskantha.

At times I think will we succeed. Maybe because we aren’t as environmentally friendly as we should be. We should persevere nonetheless.

I believe if the communities even if not planting trees,  becomes aware to at least pledge to nurture the trees that have been planted will bring us much ahead in this race to save our environment.

Recently, VSSM in association with Burhani Development Committee planted 2000 trees at Bohra Cemetry in Shiya village. A Vrikshmitra has been appointed to nurture these trees. The committee also constructed a room  to house the Vrikshmitra

VSSM’s senior team member Naran has been working hard to turn this dream into reality. Our efforts will bear fruits once the trees begin to grow.

There was an old well adjoining the cemetery, the dwindling water levels had also dried up the well. Recently, a minor canal of Sardar Sarovar started flowing from near and the water levels in the region began to rise. Eventually, water began percolating into the well but not as much because the well wasn't cleaned for decades. The committee ensures it was cleaned and repaired. Eventually, water has begun percolating and filling up the well. The water will be used to irrigate the trees.

Hope other villages too show such commitment to protect the greens around their villages.

હા બીજા જિલ્લાના મિત્રોને ફરિયાદ છે અમારા વિસ્તારમાં કેમ નહીં. આવતા વર્ષથી સુરેન્દ્રનગરમાં પણ આ કાર્યો આરંભવાનો વિચાર છે..

પણ ત્યાં સુધી હરિયાળા બનાસકાંઠાનો સંકલ્પ..

ક્યારેક થાય આ સ્વપ્ન સાકાર થશે? મૂળ આપણે બધા જોઈએ એવા પર્યાવરણ પ્રેમી નથી માટે.. પણ ખેર પ્રયત્ન તો કરવો રહ્યો. જો કે ગામે ગામ લોકો જાગૃત થાય અને વૃક્ષો વાવવાનો નહીં પણ ઉછેરવાનો સંકલ્પ કરે તો આ સ્વપ્ન સાકાર કરવું એવુંયે મુશ્કેલ નથી..

તાજેતરમાં શિયાગામના બહોરા કબ્રસ્તાનમાં VSSMએ બુરહાની ડેવલપમેન્ટ કમીટી સાથે રહીને 2000 વૃક્ષો વાવવ્યા..ઉછેર માટે પગારદાર વૃક્ષમિત્ર રાખ્યા.

વૃક્ષમિત્રના રહેવા માટે કમીટીએ એક ઓરડી બનાવી આપી..

VSSM ના સંનિષ્ઠ કાર્યકર નારણની સખત મહેનત આ કાર્યમાં દેખાઈ રહી છે.. બસ વૃક્ષો ઉછરી જાય તો એની ભાગમભાગી સાર્થક..

કબ્રસ્તાનમાં આવેલો કૂવો વર્ષોથી ખાલી પડેલો.. મૂળ તો પાણીના તળ નીચા ગયા માટે પણ થોડા સમય પહેલાં નર્મદાની માઈનોર કેનાલ ત્યાંથી પસાર થઈ અને પાણીના તળ કેનાલ સતત વહેવાના કારણે ઉપર આવ્યા એટલે કૂવામાં પણ પાણી ઝમ્યુ. પણ કૂવો સાફ નહોતો.. એટલે જોઈએ એવો ભરાતો નહોતો. કમીટીએ કૂવો બરાબર સાફ કરી મરમ્મત કરાવી જેથી પાણી બરાબર ઝમીને ભરાઈ શકે.. અને સફાઈ પછી કૂવો બરાબર ભરાયો.. આ પાણીનો ઉપયોગ પણ વૃક્ષોને પાણી આપવા માટે થશે..

શિયાગામની જેમ પર્યાવરણ જતન માટે અન્ય ગામો પણ કટીબદ્ધ થાય તેવી આશા વ્યક્ત કરીએ..
