“When did we ever have the proofs of our identification, our entire life  has been  spent wandering around the wastelands. It was our good fate that almighty sent you and Tohidbhai otherwise who else was prepared to hold our hand. In fact, we have suffered a lot. The moment we saw someone dressed in Khakhi (colour synonymous to police uniform in India) we would run for our lives. But because of you  we are at peace now and life has offered us hope.”

“Ben, can you help us with land to build a house. How long will we stay in shanties like these?”

Lakhabhai Dafer a resident of Rajpur, Mehsana and many like him have weaved a dream of a home and keep requesting us for the same.

We have filed the applications  and submitted it to the concerned department however, for some or the other reasons the  applications are refusing to move forward to see the light of the day.

“We will get to stay in our own house in this lifetime, right?” curious  Lakhabhai and Dilabhai raise questions we have yet to find answer to.

“Ben, we even have voter ID cards now, so why is it so  difficult to find land for us??”  inquired Lakhabhai and others showing me their voter ID cards when I was at their settlement recently.

Honestly, I have now answers to all these questions. But, I wish these questions reach those concerned who have decided to remain blind to the plight of these families and turned a deaf ear to their repeated requests.

'સીમાડે રઝળતા અમારી કને અમારી ઓળખના એકેય આેધારો ચો હતા. એ તો હારા પરતાપ માલીકના કે તમન ન તોહીદભઈન મેલ્યા. નકર અમારુ કુણ ધણી થાતુ તુ. બહુ દુઃખ વેઠ્યું, જંગલી પ્રાણીઓ ઘોડે ખાખી વરદીન ભાળી ન નાહતા ફરતા પણ હવે બધી વાતનું હખ હ.'

'બેન રેવા બલ્લે જમીનું કોક કરી દો ન ચો હુદી ઓમ સાપરાંમો પડ્યા રેવાનું?'

મહેસાણાના રાજપુરમાં રહેતા લાખાભાઈ ડફેર અને તેમના જેવા બધાયની ઘર બાંધવા પોતાની જમીન મળે એવી એક જ વિંનંતી.

દરખાસ્ત આખી તૈયાર કરીને આપી દીધી છે પણ કોણ જાણે આ દરખાસ્તના નિકાલનું મુહરત નથી નીકળી રહ્યું.

લાખા ભાઈ અને દીલાભાઈ કહે એમ,

'અમારા જીવતા ઘર જડી તો જાહે ને?'

મનેય નથી ખબર શું થવાનું...

એમની વસાહતમાં ગયા ત્યારે લાખાભાઈને અન્ય સૌએ મતદારકાર્ડ બતાવ્યા અને કહ્યું, 'બેન હવ તો કેડેય જડી ગ્યા તોય ઘર કેમ નથી આલતા??'

જવાબ મારી પાસે નથી....

પણ હવે બહેરા કાનને આ અવાજ સંભળાય એમ ઈચ્છીએ...

“Ben, whenever we are asked which village we belong to, we feel  embarrassed  to reveal that we belong to Vadia. Out village has always carried a bad image. And we want to change that image, wipe off that stigma. We are ready to work hard and with your support we want to change that image!!”

After our work in Vadia, such words seem like music to our ears. When the youth of the village is prepared to work towards change, one knows for sure that better times lie in the horizon.

In 1963, government had allotted 205 acres of land to the women of Vadia. The land was in such poor condition that the families could never work on it to make it productive. The administration tried giving farming incentives from time to time however, as the efforts were not continuous enough the desired results were never achieved.

Since 2005,  VSSM has been consistently working towards improving the ground realities in Vadia and our persistence has begun  paying off. Vadia, that was once arid and barren now looks lush with green farms all around. The families have also began taking interest free  loans from us to begin cattle farming and dairy.

Bhikhabhai obtained loan from VSSM to buy buffalos. He intends to have a large cattle shade. After hearing the inspiring story of Lalabhai Raval who has had a successful venture with cow rearing and dairy after taking interest free loan from VSSM Bhikhabhai also plans to replicate his model in Vadia with addition of cows to his cattle wealth.

“Ben anywhere we are,  the waiting cattle compels us to return home by 4 PM. We have to return on time for them, milk them and take the milk to the dairy. Our thoughts are now focused towards our cattle.” Mukesh shared with a smile on his face.

Once the youth of Vadia begins working to earn money the hard way  and the daughters continue to get married, no one from Vadia will face embarrassment to share the name of the village they belong to.

Yes, for sure we will be creating a Vadia of our dreams pretty soon.

'અમે કોઈ ગોમમાં જઈએ અન ગોમના કોઈ પુસ ક ચોના તો અમે કહી નઈ હકતા ક અમે ચોના સીએ. બેન ગોમની જે ખરાબ સાપ પડી હ ઈન ભૂંસવી હ.

તમે સાથ આલો અમે મેનત કરશું પણ હવ ગોમની સાપ બદલાવવી હ એ નક્કી.'

વાડિયાના ભીખાભાઈ અને મુકેશની વાત સાંભળી રાજી થવાયું.

ગામના યુવાનો કામ કરતા થાય તેનાથી રૃડુ શું હોઈ શકે?

વાડિયામાં રહેતી બહેનોને સરકારે 205 એકર જમીન 1963માં આપેલી પણ બાવળના જંગલથી ભરી પડેલી આ જમીન પર તેઓ કશું કરી નહોતા શક્યા. 

સરકારે વખતો વખત કોશીશ કરી પણ સતત પ્રયત્નો ના થતા ઈચ્છીત પરિણામ ના મળ્યું.

2005માં પહેલીવાર વાડિયા જવાનું થયું એ પછી VSSM દ્વારા થયેલા સતત પ્રયત્નોના કારણે નક્કર બદલાવ આવવા માંડ્યો છે.

એક વખતનું સુક્કુ ભઠ્ઠ વાડિયા આજે લીલુછમ દેખાવા માંડ્યું છે. લોકો ખેતી કરતા થયા છે અને ખેતીની જમીન હોવાના લીધે અમારી પાસેથી લોન લઈને લોકો પશુપાલન કરતા થયા છે.

ભીખાભાઈ એ VSSMની મદદથી ભેંસો ખરીદી છે. તેમની ઈચ્છા મોટો તબેલો કરવાની છે. 

ભેંસો લાવ્યા પણ સંસ્થામાંથી લોન લઈને બે પાંદડે થયેલા લાલાભાઈ રાવળને જોઈને તેમણે ગાયો લાવવાનું પણ નક્કી કર્યું છે.

મુકેશ હસતા હસતા કહે છે, 

'બેન હવ તો બારા ચોક જઈએ તોય ચાર પેલા ઘેર પોંગવાની ચિંતા રે. ભેંસ દોવાની, દૂધ ડેરીમોં ભરાબ્બાનું આ બધા સિવાયના એકેય વિચારો હાલ અમારા મનમોં નહીં હેડતા.'

ગામના યુવાનો મહેતન કરતા થાય, ગામની દરેક દિકરી પરણતી થાય તો અમે વાડિયાના છીએ એવું કહેતા કોઈ વાડિયાવાસીને શરમ નહીં આવે એ નક્કી...અને હા અમે એવું વાડિયા બહુ ઝડપથી નિર્માણ કરીશું એ પણ નક્કી....

Remarkable efforts by Roopsinhbhai and the village people for tree plantation in Bhimpura village...

“Yes of course I will do it, there is no  task  as noble as raising  trees. These trees have favoured me a lot, I will surely take up the task.”

We  found Roopsinhbhai in Bhimpura, a person who showers love and affection on the trees as he would on  his own children.  He was responding to our inquiry whether he would be interested in taking up the responsibility of raising the trees we intend to plant  in his village as part of VSSM’s campaign to make Banaskantha green and water sufficient once again.

We have initiated the planning for the mentioned campaign of planting trees. Meetings are underway to decide the first phase of villages to be covered under the tree plantation drive during this monsoon. There are villages who have approached us with the request of planting trees in their villages. If they agree to the precondition of providing contribution and take up the responsibility of watering and caring for  the trees regularly only then will we initiate the program in any village.

We had a meeting in Bhimpura with the community leaders Khumabhai and others. They agreed to raising Rs. 20 every month per house and water the trees as well. The amount raised will serve as remuneration to be paid to the person assigned the responsibility of raising and nurturing the trees. If required VSSM shall contribute,  provided the village has played its part of raising the amount. The leadership of Bhimpura have agreed to this pre-condition.

It was Khumabhai who suggested we assign the responsibility to  Roopsinhbhai.

“If there are 4-5 households who do not pay, I will pay on their behalf, but this must be done!!” said Valjibhai.

As of now in Bhimpura we have decided  to plant trees on the banks of the newly deepened lake and the land adjoining the lake.

We are in process of identifying  villages for our tree plantation drive. By June we should have identified the villages and individuals to be assigned the responsibility of caring for the trees. We request you to begin planning in your region too,  before the onset of monsoon. It is  crucial we plant and raise as many trees possible.

ભીમપુરામાં વૃક્ષને પોતાના બાળકની જેમ પ્રેમ કરનાર રૃપસીંહભાઈ મળી ગયા. 

'અમે તમારા ગામમાં ઝાડખાં વાવવાનું આયોજન કરી રહ્યા છીએ. આ ઝાડના ઉછેરની જવાબદારી તમને સોંપવી છે તે તમે કરશો આ કામ?'

'હોવ ચમ નઈ કરુ. ઓના જેવું ઉત્તમ કોમ એકેય નહીં. અન મન આ ઝાડખાંએ ઘણો લાભ કરી આલ્યો હ્. તમ તમાર કરીશ કોમ.'

ચોમાસુ શરૃ થતા પહેલાં ક્યા ગામોમાં વૃક્ષારોપણનું કામ કરવું એનું આયોજન કરી રહ્યા છીએ. ઘણા ગામોએ અમારા ગામમાં પણ વૃક્ષો વાવવાનું કરોની વાત કરી. પણ અમારી શરત પ્રમાણે ગામ પોતે ફાળો આપે ઉપરાંત ઝાડને પાણી આપવાની જવાબદારી સ્વીકારે તે ગામમાં આ કામ કરીશું.

ભીમપુરામાં ખુમાભાઈ અને ગામના અન્ય આગેવાનો સાથે બેઠક થઈ તેમણે કહ્યું દર મહિને ઘર દીઠ વીસ રૃપિયા ફાળો અમે આપીશું. સાથે ઝાડને પાણી આપવાની જવાબદારી પણ અમારી.

આ ફાળો ઝાડના જતન માટે રાખેલા માણસના પગાર પેટે જશે. જરૃર પડે સંસ્થા પણ પગાર આપવામાં પોતાનું ભંડોળ વાપરશે પણ ગામ સહયોગ કરે તો જ સંસ્થા સહયોગ કરશે. એ શરત ભીમપુરાવાસીઓએ માન્ય રાખી છે.

રૃપસીંહભાઈને આ કામની જવાબદારી સોંપવાનું પણ ખુમાભાઈ જેવા આગેવાનોએ જ નક્કી કર્યું. ગામના વાલજીભાઈએ તો કહ્યું કે, ગામના બે પાંચ માણસો ફાળો ના આપે તો હું આપી દઈશ પણ આ કરવા જેવું કામ છે બેન....

હાલ પુરતુ VSSMના પ્રયત્નથી ખોદાયેલા તળાવની પાળ અને તળાવની બાજુના ચરામાં ઝાડ વાવવાનું આયોજન કર્યું છે..

વૃક્ષારોપણ માટે ગામોની પસંદગી થઈ રહી છે....

જુન શરૃ થતા પહેલાં બધી શરતો સાથે ગામો અને ઝાડને બાળકની જેમ ઉછેરવાની, ઝાડ પ્રત્યે મમતા દાખવાનાર માણસોની પણ પસંદગી થઈ જશે.. 

તમે પણ તમારા વિસ્તારમાં આયોજન કરો... વરસાદ આવે તે પહેલાં 

આ આયોજન થાય તે જરૃરી....

In Nava Deesa’s L. P. Savani Nagar there are 12 elderly who have no one to look after them. These people have worked hard, earned and raised families, they also begged when they were too weak to work but now they can barely get up and move. If someone is kind enough she/he comes and gives them food otherwise they just sleep with empty bellies. Some have lost their vision, some can’t walk, some have children who too are extremely poor to be able to take care of parents.

It is always said,  that it is a blessings to be born as human however, after watching the pain and misery of these elders a prayers escapes from within requesting almighty to not be born as human again.

માવતર અનાથ થયા છે. એમને જીવનની પાછલી અવસ્થા સુખેથી જીવવા મદદની જરૂર છે.

અનાથ અથવા તકવંચિત બાળકોના પાલક આજે ઘણા બને છે અને એ બાળકનો નિભાવ ખર્ચ પણ ઘણા આપે પણ આજે આપને એવા માવતરના પાલક બનવા વિનંતી કરી રહી છું. જેમનું આ દુનિયામાં કોઈ નથી.

નવા ડીસામાં એલ.પી. સવાણી નગરમાં 12 વડિલો રહે છે. જેમની સંભાળ રાખનાર કોઈ નથી. કામ થતુ તુ ત્યાં સુધી એમણે કર્યું. હાથ પગ નબળા પડ્યા પછી ભીખ માંગવાનું કર્યું. પણ હવે તો ચલાતુયે નથી. વસાહતમાંથી કોઈને દયા આવેને કોઈ ખવડાવી દે તો ચાલે. બાકી ભૂખ્યા રહેવાનું.

તમામ જીવ સૃષ્ટિમાં માણસનો અવતાર સૌથી શ્રેષ્ઠ એવું માનવામાં આવે પણ આ વડિલોને જોયા પછી આવો અવતાર જો શ્રેષ્ઠ કહેવાય તો ભગવાનને ફરી માણસ તરીકે જનમ ના આપવા વિનંતી કરુ..

કોઈ આંખે અંધ છે, કોઈ ચાલી શકતુ નથી. કોઈને દિકરા છે પણ એ પોતાનુ પુરુ કરી શકતા નથી એવામાં વડીલો તો પ્રાથમિકતામાં ક્યાંથી આવે?

અમે બપોર અને સાંજ આવા વડિલોને જમાડવાનું શરૃ કર્યું છે. એક વૃદ્ધનો માસીક ખર્ચ લગભગ 1600 આવે છે.

આપને બાળકની જેમ આ વડિલોના પાલક બનવા વિનંતી કરી રહી છું.

મહેરબાની કરી સરકારની વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન યોજના કે ફલાણી યોજનામાં જોડવાની સલાહ ના આપવા વિનંતી.

‘We are Meer Fakir…’ the 60 families living in Deesa have been saying this for past 60 years. Meer Fakir follow both faiths, Islam and Hindu. They pray to Allah and cannot imagine their existence  without worshiping the Goddess. It seems they have absorbed and imbibed  the true spirit of Indian  culture. Yet, we have resisted accepting and including them all these years.

It is become immensely difficult for us to obtain their proofs of residence. VSSM’s Mahesh has been able to get their Voter ID cards, Adhar cards but the applications for ration cards refuse to move forward.

The administration of Banaskantha has always been supportive but they too need a little nudge from time to time. We brought this matter to the notice of Shri. Ishwarbhai Parmar, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment. His PA took Shri. Vijaybhai took personal interest and instructed the Mamlatdar to issue ration cards to these families. However, when the families received the cards they were APL category 2 cards, which are practically useless for these extremely poor families.

“Ben, these cards do not bring us even a single speck of grain! What do we do with them?”

Category 2 cards are those ration cards that economically well off families like us receive. How do these families who live in tethered shanties get issued such cards baffles us!! The families earn their living as manual labour while those incapable of putting in hard work retort to begging as a means of earning. It is for such individuals and families that the Antyodaya ration card assures that there is atleast some food on the plate.

The reason for sharing my thoughts here is because a lot of officials and administrators read our facebook posts, it’s an humble request to all of them to look within,  empathise with these families and do the needful. Only that will do justice to these families.

And to our friends in Deesa, please cooperate and work together to provide residential plots to these Meer families. Aren’t the one of us?

અમે #મીર ફકીર એવું જુના ડીસામાં 40 વર્ષથી રહેતા 60 પરિવારો કહે.

હીંદુ અને મુસ્લીમ બેય ધર્મ આ પરિવારો પાળે. 

તેઓ કહે અમે અલ્લાહની બંદગી કરીએ પણ માતાજી વિના અમને ના ચાલે. 

ભારતીય સંસ્કૃતિની સાચી ધરોહર સમા આ સમાજને અપનાવવાનું શાને નથી થતું તે સમજાતું નથી.

આ પરિવારોનો રહેઠાણનો પુરાવો મેળવવો અમારે માટે મહામૂસીબત સમુ બની ગયું છે.

મતદારકાર્ડ, આધારકાર્ડ તો VSSMના કાર્યકર મહેશે કઢાવી આપ્યા. પણ રેશનકાર્ડનું કામ કચેરીમાં આગળ વધે નહીં.

આમ તો બનાસકાંઠાનું વહીવટીતંત્ર સહયોગ ઘણો કરે પણ એને ક્યાંક ઘક્કા મારવા પડે.

રેશનકાર્ડ ના નીકળતા હોવાની વાત સામાજિક ન્યાય અને અધિકારીતા વિભાગના મંત્રી શ્રી ઈશ્વરભાઈ પરમારને કરી અને તેમના પી.એ.શ્રી વિજયભાઈએ અંગત રસ લઈને મામલતદાર શ્રીને કાર્ડ કાઢવાની સૂચના આપી.

પણ કાર્ડ હાથમાં આવ્યા ત્યારે એપીએલ.2 કેટેગરીના કાર્ડ જોઈને આ પરિવારો નિરાશ થયા.

'બેન આમાં તો અનાજનો એક દાણોય મળતો નથી. આવા કાર્ડને હુ કરવાના?'

મને અને તમને મળે એવા કાર્ડ આ પરિવારોને મળ્યા. જબકી તેમની રહેણાકની સ્થિતિ જોતા તેમને અંત્યોદય કે બીપીએલ કાર્ડ મળવા જોઈએ.

મીર પરિવારો છૂટક મજૂરી તો કેટલાક મજૂરી ના કરી શકે તેવા ભીક્ષાવૃતિ પર નભે છે. ત્યારે રેશનકાર્ડ એમના માટે ધાન મેળવવાનો મોટો આધાર છે.

અહીંયા આ પોસ્ટ લખવા પાછળનો આશય ઘણા અધિકારી મિત્રો ફેસબુક પર લખાતી અમારી પાસે પોસ્ટ વાંચે છે આ બધા મિત્રોને માનવતા દાખવી ક્યાંક જાત તપાસ કરીને કામ કરવાનું કરવા વિનંતી કરુ છું. જો આમ થશે તો દરેક તે સાચો ન્યાય આપી શકાશે.

બાકી જુના ડીસાના પ્રિયજનોને આ મીર પરિવારોને રહેવા માટે જમીન ફાળવવાની બાબતમાં સહકાર આપવા વિનંતી..

આખરે આ પરિવારો પણ આપણામાંના જ એક છે...

The plan is to plant trees in your village, trees that are native to our land, trees that can become home to birds, trees under whose shade  children can live their childhood, trees that will provide shade for us to rest under the brazing sun and we need your support to begin this endeavour.

You must be thinking why am I discussing trees in the middle of a difficult summer!!

Yes it’s isn’t June yet, but we have begun planning for June. We all agree to  the fact that trees are life and life is impossible without trees. Trees bring rains, cools down the temperatures, stop desertification of earth yet, we have not cared for our trees, we took then for granted all these years. Just because they do not voice their pain we have chopped them off like never before. How selfish and ruthless are we??

We at VSSM  want to begin planning tree plantation with you for this monsoon. We would have preferred villages taking the entire responsibility of this plantation drive, but because as communities we are always against each other, divided rather than united we have decided to be part of this  campaign until you shed away your differences for larger good.

The plan is to assign the responsibility of caring and raising the trees to one individual who will water it, manure it, nurture it. It will be village’s responsibility to provide her/him remuneration by collectively raising the amount required. Each household will contribute Rs. 20 a month and balance difference will be borne by VSSM.

It will be an ongoing drive and we will be planting more trees every year for next 10 years. Whoever wishes to plant trees in memory of their forefathers  can do so and we will name the trees accordingly. The idea is to created woods and tree heaven. We will work with only those who want to commit to this cause and work collectively. The village that joins this initiative will have newly formed Tree-Temple committee which will be responsible for this entire pursuit. All those who have moved away from their villages can also be part of it and sponsor a tree, pledge for its protection by contributing towards the same.

આજે પાંચ જૂન નથી એ જાણુ છું. પણ પાંચમી જૂનનું આયોજન અત્યારથી કરવું છે..

ઝાડ વગર જીવન અશક્ય છે અને ઝાડ વગરની ધરતી રણ જેવી લાગે.

ઝાડ વરસાદ તો લાવે સાથે વાતાવરણ ઠંડુ રાખે.. છતાં આપણે એનું જતન ના કરીએ..

કેવા સ્વાર્થી...

તમારા ગામમાં આ ચોમાસે ઝાડ વાવવાનું આયોજન તમારી સાથેની ભાગીદારીથી કરીએ.

આમ તો તમે એટલે કે ગામ જ જવાબદારી લે એ ઉત્તમ પણ ગામમાં સ્વાર્થ ઘણો છે.. સ્વાર્થ મુક્ત થાવ તો રાજી. પણ એ થાય ત્યાં સુધી....

ઝાડ વાવવા તથા તેની માવજત કરવા એક માણસ રાખીશું. જે ઝાડનું ધ્યાન રાખશે. ઝાડ ફરતે વાડોલિયા કરવાથી લઈને ઝાડને પાણી આપવાનું, તેમાં ખાતર નાખવાનું કરશે.

આ માણસને પગાર ચૂકવવામાં ગામ ભાગીદારી કરશે. ગામ દર મહિને 20 રૃપિયા ઘર દીઠ ઉઘરાવશે અને બાકીના પૈસા સંસ્થા પગાર પેટે ઝાડની માવજત કરનારને આપશે.

દર વર્ષે ગામમાં ચોક્કસ સંખ્યામાં ઝાડ વાવીશું. આ ક્રમ દસ વર્ષ સુધી તો ચાલુ રાખીશું જ.

જે વ્યક્તિ પોતાના દાદા પરદાદાના નામે ઝાડ વાવવાનું કરાવવા ઈચ્છે તેમને એ ઝાડનું નામ પણ આપીશું.

આ યોજનાથી જે ગામ પોતાના ગામને નંદનવન કરવા તૈયાર થાય અમે તેમની સાથે કામ કરવાનું કરીશું.

આ કાર્યક્રમમાં જે ગામ જોડાશે તે ગામમાં વૃક્ષમંદિરની એક કમીટી બનશે. જે આ કામનો વહીવટ તેમજ દેખરેખ રાખવાનું સ્વયંમ કરશે.

ગામ બહાર રહેતા પણ જેમને વતન માટે અને સૌથી અગત્યનું ઘરતી માતા પ્રત્યે પ્રેમ છે એ લોકો પણ પોતાના ગામમાં ઝાડ વાવવાના આ કામને પ્રોત્સાહન આપી આર્થિક સહયોગ આપી શકે.

“Ben, by marrying off two of my daughters today and assigning one in your care, I have fulfilled my promise given to you. I have no worries. Even death  does not scare me now.”  Rameshbhai’s eyes welled up as he talked to me today at his daughter Krishna’s marriage ceremony.

Vadia, a village whose traditional occupation is absolutely unaccepted seldom treats its daughters with respect and care, but once the daughter is married or engaged she is never forced into the hellish traditional occupation of prostitution.

Rameshbhai had promised me to never force his daughters into prostitution when he first met me in 2005. I had the right to correct him because he considers me  his sister.

The pimps active in Vadia tried their level best to lure Rameshbhai into the trap, but he remained undeterred like a  rock. Both his kidneys failed, the medications pushed him to the brink of survival. VSSM’s Shardaben and his elder brother Bababhai worked tirelessly to bring him to Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital and get his kidney transplanted. Right now, he is on medication that is taken managed  by VSSM’s President Shri Madhavbhai  Ramanuj.

Apart from the physical trauma due to such life threatening ailment Rameshbhai also passed through severe mental trauma, but even under such dire circumstances he remained undeterred in his commitment to protect his daughters and ensured they get  married.

The ceremony wouldn’t have been possible without the support of VSSM’s largehearted family. The entire expense of the wedding ceremony was supported by respected Shri Morari Bapu. The kitchenware in the trousseau has been gifted by Shri Somabhai Patel. We have provided all that you can see in the pictures to Krishna and Kalpana. Apart from this,  to help them earn and live with dignity we have committed a buffalo each to both of them.

The Sarpanch of Khanpur Shri Nagjibhai has been assigned with the responsibility of finding a good buffalos. The costs of buffalo are very high currently hence, we plan to purchase them once the prices come down.

'બેન મે આપેલું વચન આજે પૂરું કર્યું. મારી બે દીકરી પરણાવી અને એક તમને સોંપી. હવે હાલ મોત આવે તોય મને ચિંતા નથી '

વાડિયાના રમેશભાઈ સરાણિયાની આંખો આજે દીકરી ક્રિષ્ના ના લગન વખતે આ કહેતા કહેતા ભરાઈ આવી.

વાડિયા જ્યાની પરંપરા દીકરીઓ માટે ક્યારેક ના સ્વીકારાય એવી. દેહવ્યાપારના કલંક ગામની દીકરીઓના માથે લખાતા હોય એવા વાડિયામાં જે દીકરીની એક વખત લગ્ન કે સગાઈ થાય એ ક્યારેય આવા નર્કમાં ધકેલાતી નથી.

રમેશભાઈને ૨૦૦૫ માં મળેલી અને એ વખતે જ એમણે પોતાની દીકરીઓને આ નર્કાગાર માં નહિ ધકેલવાનું વચન આપેલું. મને બહેન માને એટલે થોડા વિશેષ અધિકાર ભાવ પણ બંને તરફ હોય... પણ છેવટે તો બધુંયે હકારાત્મક.

કેવી લાલચો સામે આવી પણ એ બધાને એમણે ઠોકર મારી.

બે કિડની બગડી. દવામાં ખૂબ ખર્ચ થયો. Vssm ના કાર્યકર શારદાબેન અને મોટાભાઈ બાબા ભાઈ સાથે રમેશભાઈ ને માંડ કિડની હોસ્પિટલ લાવ્યા અને કિડની ટ્રાન્સપ્લાન્ટ કરાવ્યું. હાલે દવા ચાલે પણ દવાનું બધું vssm ના પ્રમુખ માધવભાઇ રામાનુજ સાચવે. 

આર્થિક રીતે કમર તૂટી ગયેલી. ત્યારેય આવેલી લાલચોથી એ પર રહ્યા અને ખરા અર્થમાં એમણે દીકરીના બાપને છાજે એમ દીકરીઓને સંસાર મંડાવ્યા.

લગ્ન ખર્ચમાં સહયોગ પૂજ્ય મોરારી બાપુ એ આપ્યો. દીકરીને ભેટમાં વાસણ માટે સોમાભાઈ પટેલ સહયોગ આપ્યો. તેમનો આભાર વ્યક્ત કરું છું. દીકરી ક્રિષ્ના અને કલ્પનાને લગનમાં ફોટોમાં દેખાય છે એ સાધન સામગ્રી તો આપી. સાથે બેય દીકરીઓ સાસરીમાં સ્વમાનભેર જીવી શકે એ માટે બેયને ભેંસ આપવાનું વચન પણ આપ્યું.

ખાનપુરના સરપંચ નાગજી ભાઈને ભેંસ લાવવાની જવાબદારી સોંપી. હાલ ભેંસોની કિંમત વધારે છે ઓછી થતાં જ બેય દીકરીના ઘરે ભેંસ બંધાશે.

વાડિયા માં બદલાવ માટે મથતા સૌ સ્વજનો પાસે આજે રાજીપો વ્યક્ત કરું છું.

પૂજય બાપુ નો આભાર માનું છું એમની મદદ વગર આ બધું અસંભવ હતું...

અમારા કાર્યકર શારદાબેન સતત વાડિયા માં રહેતા માણસોની ચિંતા સેવે અને એમને મદદ કરે એમની લાગણી ને પ્રણામ.

અને રમેશભાઈ તમે ભાઈ તરીકે આપેલું વચન નિભાવ્યું એનો આનંદ.. સાથે વાડિયા ની તમામ દીકરીના બાપ તમારા જેવા થાય એવી આશા રાખું છું.

I was on my way to monitor the ongoing water management works at Rampura. En route to  Rampura falls Sutharnesdi, the thought of  Kaluba crossed our mind and we decided to stop at Sutharnesdi to meet her. The families of Sutharnesdi had struggled very hard to obtain the proofs of their existence, their citizenry documents. They were just three families but no-one seemed to  inclined to ensure they received those documents. VSSM’s Naran had worked on campaign mode to  ensure these families receive documentary proofs of their existence. Consequently, they received Voter ID cards and  Ration cards too. “We no longer wish to sing lullabies, please give us loan to help us start some new occupation,” they had requested. Eventually, we sanctioned Rs. 5000 each to help both the sons of Kaluba buy bicycle to start selling cosmetics and hair accessories.

Life is a little easier for them now. We have also filed their  applications for obtaining residential plots from government. The Bharthari never featured on the official list of nomadic and de-notified communities. As a result of VSSM’s extensive advocacy,  the government officials did consider and included Bharthari as well as numerous other communities we had suggested into the official list. This community can now expect to obtain plots and assistance from the government. It is pertinent that  now their life changes for better and these families are determined to make that happen.

“It is because of you we are able to stay here, you are well aware that Bhartharis aren’t blessed to lead such good life!!” Kaluba shared when we stopped to meet her.

It is an incredible feeling to learn  that our existence has brought so much peace and happiness into someone else’s life. Today, there are thousands of individual who feel the same as Kaluba. We are grateful to have been given this opportunity to be helpful to so many.

However, it is crucial that we spot for families like these and make concrete plans  to ensure they are given residential plots. We have presented these to the administration and are hopeful they will plan diligently.

રામપુરામાં થઈ રહેલા જળ વ્યવસ્થાપનના કામો જોવા જતી હતી અને વચમાં સુથારનેસડી આવ્યું. નારણે કાળુ બા ભરથરીને યાદ કર્યો અને અમે ત્યાં થંભ્યા.

પોતાની ઓળખનો આધાર મેળવવા આ પરિવારોએ ઘણો સંઘર્ષ કર્યો હતો. 

ત્રણ જ પરિવાર છતાં કોઈની એના પર નજર જ નહોતી પડી. 

કાર્યકર નારણે એમને નાગરિકત્વ અપાવાની ઝૂંબેશ હાથ ધરી ને મતદારકાર્ડના ફોર્મ ભરાયા. એ પછી તો રાશનકાર્ડ પણ થાય ને હવે રાવણહથ્થો લઈને હાલરડા નથી ગાવા તમે લોન આપો એવી વિનંતી સામે શૃંગારપ્રસાધનો, બોરીયા - બકલ વેચવા સાયકલ અને થોડો સામાન ખરીદવા 5000 -5000ની લોન કાળુ બાના બે દિકરાને આપી.

જીંદગી પહેલા કરતા સરળ થઈ છે. 

રહેવા કાયમી જમીન મળે એ માટે અરજી કરી છે. ભરથરીનો સમાવેશ વિચરતી જાતિની યાદીમાં નહોતો એટલે પ્લોટ મેળવા મુશ્કેલ જણાતા હતા પણ 2017માં VSSMના પ્રયત્નોથી ભરથરીનો સમાવેશ વિચરતી જાતિમાં થયો છે એટલે ઘર તો થવાના. હવે જીવન બહેતર થાય એ વધુ જરૃરી છે. એ માટે એમણે કમર કસી છે.

કાળુ બા મળ્યા અને એમણે કહ્યું, 'તમે બધા હોવને અમે અહીંયા રહી હકીએ બાકી અમારે આવુ રૃડૃ રહેવાનું શાને હોય?'

આપણા હોવાથી કોઈને સંતોષ થાય એ વાત જ અનેરી છે. આજે હજારો માણસો છે જેમની લાગણી કાળુ બા જેવી જ છે... 

કુદરતે નિમિત્ત બનાવ્યા અનો રાજીપો છે...

પણ હવે આવા પરિવારોને શોધીને તેમને રહેવા લાયક યોગ્ય જગ્યાઓ મળે તે અંગે સચોટ આયોજન થાય એ જરૃરી છે.

“The lake in our village was excavated during the great famine of Gujarat after which,  no one has really cared for it. Our village depends on the water this lake provides. But no none has really bothered to nourish it. If we repair and deepen the lake it will hold more water and the farmers will benefit from it!!”

Rampura’s Dharmeshbhai had joy in his tone when he mentioned this when we shared that VSSM will soon initiate the water conservation work in Rampura.

As part of the implementation strategy, VSSM makes it very clear from the beginning that the work will happen only if the village panchayat and leaders are willing to cooperate and contribute to the mammoth task of deepening the village lakes. We have had mixed experiences. Some villages have been extremely enthusiastic and supportive while some had to be dropped  half way through.

Rampura is a remote village from  Banaskantha’s Sui block. The landscape is dry and harsh. As the waters of Narmada reach this village, some farmers have made use of it and occasional green spots could be  noticed through the landscape. The villagers were willing to contribute in their own way to this task. Hence, we have decided to deepen at 5-6 villages in Rampura.

The support for this huge task is provided by Shri Bhanuben Shah,  who is currently  based in Mumbai.

The villagers of Rampura agree that the village receives a lot of water during the monsoon but it just gets drained as there is no means of conservation. Once the lakes are deepened the water will seep-in and benefit the entire village.

Of course the village will benefit,  so will this earth and its habitants. A task that began with one village is gradually spreading through the entire district with more and more villages joining in.

'અમાર ગોમનું તળાવ પચીહો કાળ પડ્યો તે વખતે ખંદાયેલું એ પછી કોઈએ તળાવની ભાળ જ કાઢી નઈ. ગોમમાં પોણીનો મોટો આશરો તળાવ જ. તળાવ ખંદાય અન હરખુ પોણી રેતો આખા ગોમના ખેડૂન ઘણો ફાયદો થાય.'

રામપુરાના ધર્મેશભાઈએ તળાવ ખોદાવવાની બાબતે હરખ વ્યક્ત કરતા આ વાત કરેલી.

ગામલોકોનો સહયોગ મળે તોજ તળાવ ગાળશું એવું દરેક ગામના તળાવ ખોદાવતી વખતે કહીએ. ઘણા ગામોમાં ખુબ સહયોગ મળે ને ઘણામાં અમારે કામ અઘુરુ મુકીને નીકળી જવું પડે.

#સૂઈગામ તાલુકાનું અંતરિયાળગામ એટલે #રામપુરા. વિસ્તાર સૂકો. હા કેટલાક ખેડૂત નર્મદા કેનાલનું પાણી લાવ્યા છે એટલે જરા હરિયાળુ લાગે બાકી સૂકો ભઠ્ઠ વિસ્તાર.છતાં ગામલોકો પોતાની રીતે મદદ કરવા તૈયાર. આ ગામના પાંચ થી છ તળાવ ઊંડા કરવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું છે.

મુંબઈના શ્રી ભાનુબહેન શાહ મુખ્ય મદદ કરવાના છે.

એ સિવાય સરકાર, ગામલોકોનો ફાળો પણ મહત્વનો રહેશે.

રામપુરાના લોકો કહે છે કે, ચોમાસામાં ઉપર વાસથી અમારા ગામમાં ઘણું પાણી આવે પણ તળાવ ઊંડા નથી એટલે પાણી વહી જાય છે. જો તળાવ ઊંડા થઈ જાય તો ઘણું પાણી એમાં સમાઈ જાય ને ગામને ફાયદો થાય.

ગામને ફાયદો થાય, ધરતી માતાને અને સમગ્ર જીવસૃષ્ટિને ફાયદો થાય તેવા આશય સાથે આરંભેલા આ કામમાં ધીમે ધીમે લોકો અને ગામો જોડાઈ રહ્યા છે...

Have you known the pain of living along the road sides with young daughters in the family?? Perhaps not. The privileged us who live within the safe confines of a house will be unable to empathise with the struggle of such parents who raise their families on streets. Inspite of spending so many years amidst the nomadic and de-notified communities, I had  never sensed it either. However, the recent episode of municipal authorities demolishing homes of families living in a ghetto near Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati locality exposed me to a whole new reality. It was the plight of wailing mother who was compelled  to live on the footpath as a result of this demolishment that brought to light the reality. The mother had narrated how she and her husband took turns to stay up at night to look after their daughters as they slept through the night. It shook my core.

Somewhere on Nandasan road along the Ahmedabad- Mehsana highway is a settlement of Meer families. The living condition of these families is extremely pitiable. The government did allot residential plots to few families, but many still live under severely  deprived conditions. When I recently met them they too raised the issue of security of their young daughter.

The changing land dynamics have sucked away all the government wastelands in many regions across Gujarat. It was on such  wastelands that these families build their settlements. Now the land grabbers are eyeing on such wastelands and claiming their right on it. The families have no choice but to take shelter on the footpaths or streets.  

It is essential these families access their right to shelter. We are awaiting the sanctions for the applications filed  for the same.

These families look up to us for fulfilment of their hopes, we truly want their longing  turns  into reality. Our role is to keep working at it and we will continue striving.

આ પ્રશ્ન પાકા ઘરમાં અને એ પણ સુરક્ષીત જગ્યામાં રહેનારને ક્યારે નહીં સમજાય. મનેય નહોતો સમજાયો.

વર્ષો વિચરતી જાતિઓ વચ્ચે રહી એમની સાથે કામ કર્યું પણ પહેલીવાર સાબરમતીના છાપરાં તુટ્યાને રડતાં રડતાં એક માએ જ્યારે રોડ પર રહેતા હોવાના લીધે દીકરીઓની સુરક્ષાને લઈને રાતના ઊંધવામાં મા- બાપ બેય વારા કરેની વાત કરી ત્યારે અંદરથી હલી ગઈ હતી.

અમદાવાદ મહેસાણા હાઈવે પર નંદાસણ રોડ પર મીર પરિવારો રહે એ લોકોની દશા પણ ભયંકર ખરાબ. સરકારે કેટલાક પરિવારોને રહેણાંક અર્થે જગ્યા આપી જ્યારે કેટલાક હજુ આમ જ રોડ પર છે.

જ્યારે એમને મળી ત્યારે એમણે પણ સાબરમતીની પેલી માની જેમ જ દિકરીઓની ચિંતાનો પ્રશ્ન ઉઠાવ્યો.

પહેલાં ગામડાંઓમાં જગ્યાઓ ખુલ્લી રહેતી જ્યાં વિચરતી જાતિઓ છાપરાં નાખી શકતી પણ હવે સૌના જીવ ટૂંકા થયા છે. સરકારની જમીન પર પણ સૌ પોતાનો હક દાવો નોંધાવી રહ્યા છે આવામાં ફૂટપાથ કે રોડની બાજુમાં છાપરાંના નાખવા સિવાય આ પરિવારો પાસે વિકલ્પો બચતા નથી.

રહેણાંકનો અધિકાર આ પરિવારોને મળે એ ઈચ્છનીય છે..
