Cloud bursts in Morbi’s Tankara, receives 7-inch rainfall in three hours…

The nomadic communities who are usually not a part of any revenue village are experiencing the adverse impact of such natural disasters for frequently than ever. Since such families do not live in pucca houses and their settlements are allowed on just the wastelands which are otherwise natural water paths or temporary water reserves that get filled during monsoons, the aftermath of such natural emergencies lives them in a dire situation.

The cloud burst in Tankara took away all that the Kangasiya families living on the outskirts of this village had owned. Their vessels, their handmade mattresses, the material they had procured from the interest free loans VSSM has provided… everything. All they could manage was to save themselves, that too with great difficulty.

The calamity has left 70 families in need to food, some basic household stuff like tarpaulin, mattresses and vessels. The government support hasn’t reached them yet. They aren’t beggars but have been left helpless in such emergency situation. But the villagers are treating them like one, “We did not tell them to go and stay on such places!!” was the response we have received when the VSSM team reached the village leaders for help. “Saheb, you don’t even allow these nomadic families to settle in the village!!”

Well, we aren’t going to talk about such cold and uncaring behavior today, we write to you because we need your support to help us arrange for relief material for these families. I am sure our well-wishing friends will choose to stand and extend the required help and support…..

મોરબીના ટંકારામાં આભ ફાટ્યું. ત્રણ કલાકમાં સાત ઈંચ વરસાદ.

ગામના છેવાડે રહેતા વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારોનો બધો જ સામાન તણાઈ ગયો. પોતાનો જીવ માંડ બચાવ્યો.

મિલકતમાં વસાવેલા ઠામણાં, ગાભાનાં ગોદડા અને કરિયાણું તણાઈ ગયું. કાંગસિયા પરિવારોને તો ધંધા માટે અમે રુપિયા 50,000ની લોન પણ આપી હતી. જેમાંથી એમણે સામાન ખરીદ્યો હતો એ સામાન પણ તણાઈ ગયો..

70 પરિવારોને અનાજ, વાસણ, ગોદળા અને તાડપત્રીની જરૃર છે. આ લોકો ભીખારી નથી પણ અચાનક આવી પડેલી આફત સામે તેઓ લાચાર છે. સરકારની મદદ પહોંચી નથી. ગામના આગેવાનોને મળ્યા તો અમણે કહ્યું, ‘અમે કહ્યુતુ આવી જગ્યાએ રહેવાનું?’ પણ સાહેબ એને ગામની વચમાં રહેવા કોણ દે? ખેર ફરિયાદ નથી કરવી પણ આપણે સૌ મદદ માટે હાથ લંબાવીએ...

“Sir, please save our son, my wife and I are prepared to mop and clean your clinic our entire lives!!”

“Sir, please save our son,  my wife and I are prepared to mop and clean your clinic our entire lives!!” was a heart wrenching plea Rachodbhai made to the doctor attending his son Mahesh. Rachodbhai Vadee had travelled from Patan to Ahmedabad to find a cure for his 3-year-old son Mahesh who is a Thalassemia major. Mahesh is third child of Sajanben and Ranchodbhai.  Their son born with Mahesh died within 10 days of his birth. Ever since they learnt about Mahesh’s medical condition when he was 10 months old, the couple has been making monthly rounds to hospitals for blood transfusion.

“It is so painful to see needles piercing his frail and tiny body!” Sajanben was in tears when she narrated the pain of witnessing the plight of her small child.

The family is enduring the financial challenge of getting Mahesh treated at a private hospital as they believe private facilities are better than government hospitals.

Rachodbhai has spent his entire life struggling to make two ends meet. The traditional occupation of bamboo basketry wasn’t rewarding enough hence he made a shift to trading plastic houseware. The family took a loan from VSSM to expand the business. The seed capital helped them increase their earning capacity. Gradually, Ranchodbhai began trading seasonal products. Like during the potato season he began taking laborers to factories, this helped him earn well. Once the season was over he would move on to his original business. Once the initial loan was paid off he applied for a bigger loan from VSSM and as he was investing in procuring material in bulk Mahesh’s illness worsened forcing him to spend some of the loan amount on his treatment.

The current condition of Mahesh is such that Ranchodbhai is required to remain at home for day together. This has also affected family’s financial health.

“Ben, the doctors here are saying it will take Rs. 12 lakh to save Mahesh. I don’t have that kind of amount right not, if you can manage the money I promise I will repay single penny, trust me!!”

We have spoken to organisations working on thalassemia, they have committed us to take the case to doctors working on this medical condition. But until that happens we are making sure Mahesh receives good treatment and care from Civil Hospital of Palanpur. If required VSSM’s team member Mahesh will accompany the couple to the hospital.

For now, we have been able to provide relief to Rachodbhai and Sajanben. The anxiety they had in the morning has subsided and  were pretty relaxed when they left office to go back home.

We are going to try our best to make sure Mahesh walks out of his medical condition. We pray for that little bit of luck and love from the almighty.


‘સાહેબ હું અન મારી વહુ આખી જીંદગી તમાર દવાખોનામ પોતુ મારસુ પણ મારા સોકરાંન બચાઈ લો.’ પોતાના વહાલસોય દીકરા મહેશને લઈને પાટણ અને અમદાવાદના ડોક્ટરો પાસે છેલ્લા બે વર્ષથી ધક્કા ખાતા રણછોડભાઈ વાદીએ કાકલુદી કરતા ડોક્ટરને કહ્યું.

થેલેસેમિયા મેજરથી પીડાતો ત્રણ વર્ષનો મહેશ, રણછોડભાઈ અને સાજનબહેનનું ત્રીજુ સંતાન. મહેશ સાથે જન્મેલો ભાઈ તો દસ જ દિવસમાં મૃત્યુ પામ્યો. મહેશની બિમારીનો ખ્યાલ દસમાં મહિને આવ્યો. ત્યારથી તેને મહિનામાં કેટલીયે વાર લોહીની બોટલો ચડે છે.

‘ઈના આવડા શરીરમાં હોયો ભોંકાતી જોવાતી નહીં પણ...’ આટલું બોલતા સાજનબહેનની આંખો ભીની ગઈ.
ખાનગી ડોક્ટરો સારી સારવાર કરે તેવું સૌ માને એટલે રણછોડભાઈ પણ મહેશની સારવાર ખાનગી દવાખાનામાં કરાવે.

રણછોડભાઈ વાંસવાદી ડીસામાં છાપરુ કરીને રહે. બાપાની જેમ આખી જીંદગી રઝળપાટ જ કર્યો. વાંસના ટોપલાં બનાવીને જીંદગી જીવાય એમ નહોતી એટલે પ્લાસ્ટીકના તગારાં વેચવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. ધંધો વધારવા VSSMએ પહેલાં પંદર હજારની લોન આપી. વેપાર સરસ ચાલ્યો. જાત મહેનતથી કમાવવાના રસ્તાય ઘણા જડ્યા. બટાકાની સીઝનમાં ફેકટરીમાં કામદારો લઈ જવાનું શરૃ કર્યું એમાંય સારા પૈસા મળે. બટેકાની સીઝન પતે એટલે તબકડાં વેચે. બચત પણ ઠીક ઠીક થઈ. ફરી ધંધામાં મોટુ રોકાણ કરવાનું વિચાર્યું. VSSM રણછોડભાઈ જેવા જ માણસોની સંસ્થા, કાર્યકર મહેશ સાથે ફરી ત્રીસ હજારની લોન આપવા તેમણે વાત કરી. સંસ્થાએ લોન આપી. થોડા તગારાં વગેરે લાવ્યા ત્યાં દીકરાની બિમારી વધી એમાંય થોડા પૈસા વપરાયાં.
મહેશને લોહી ચડાવે એટલે થોડા દિવસ ઠીક રહે પછી એ ઢીલો થઈ જાય ત્યારે રણછોડભાઈ એની સાથે  ઘરે જ રહે.

‘બેન અમદાવાદના ડોક્ટરે મહેશને હાજો કરવા 12 લાખનો ખર્ચો કીધો. મારા સોકરા ન બચાઈ લો. હું દૂધે ધોઈન પૈસા આલી દઈશ. અતાર મારી આગળ ફદિયોય નહીં પણ વિસવાહ રાખો.. ’
દીકરા મહેશની સારવાર પાલનપુર સિવીલમાં મફત થશે અને તે માટે જ્યારે જરૃર પડે કાર્યકર મહેશ તેમની સાથે જશે તેવો સધિયારો અમે આપ્યો. સાથે તેના બધા જ રીપોર્ટ થેલેસેમિયા દર્દીઓ સાથે કામ કરતી સંસ્થાના લોકોને કહ્યા. તેમણે ઓપરેશન માટે પોતે જ હોસ્પીટલ સાથે ગોઠવણ કરી આપશે તેવી વાત કરી, હાલ પુરતી રાહ જોવા કહ્યું અને જે દવા ચાલે છે તે ચાલુ રાખવા કહ્યું.

સવારે રણછોડભાઈ ઓફીસ આવ્યા ત્યારે ભારે હૈયે હતા પણ ઓફીસથી જતા હળવા થઈને ગયા.
મહેશને સારુ થઈ જાય તે માટે શક્ય કોશિશ કરવી રહી બસ કુદરત પણ મદદ કરે તેમ ઈચ્છીએ...

A report on water conservation efforts in Banaskantha…..

One of the most pressing issues for the people of Banaskantha is the non-availability of water for both drinking and agriculture purposes. Water is such a scarce resource tha The region receives very little rainfall and the appalling approach towards ground water led its over exploitation, reducing the ground water table to as low as 1200 feet. Our excessive dependence on the ground water for irrigation has made us neglect the conventional water reservoirs like lakes and wells that stored the rain water.  Let us not forget, these have been the only sources of potable water in the past. Traditionally these water bodies were maintained by the communities and village panchayats, every year they were cleaned for access silt and muck that would be flow in the lakes with the rain waters. But, since the need to draw water from the lakes decreased so did the need to care for them.  Ove the time the lakes and wells filled up with sand and mud, no longer storing the rain water.

Since last couple of years, VSSM has taken baby steps into water conservation in the region of Banaskantha. In 2016, with the support of our Mumbai based well-wishers we completed deepening of 2 lakes in Vadgamda: Pepariyu and Sajansari. Last year the rains remained below average hence the lakes did not fill up to the brim. This year however the initial monsoon has been good and the lakes were full to the brim.  The Motuchandru lake in Paradar village that was deepened this year has also filled up in the recent rains. However, the water stored in the lakes is reducing fast as the ground water table is too low and the thirsty earth soaks up all the water. The lake in Vadgamda which had overflowed because of heavy rains was 25% empty within a week. And this will the scenario with most of the lakes we have deepened. The communities here believe that after couple of spells of good rains, when the lakes have filled up to the brim thrice or more and once the land has soaked enough water, the ground water tables will begin to rise.”

We hope, in the coming times the communities continue to work with the same momentum to conserve and save every drop of rain that falls on their soil…

બનાસકાંઠાની ઉત્તરે થરાદ આસપાસના વિસ્તારમાં વરસાદ ખુબ ઓછો પડે. બોરવેલ દ્વારા સિંચાઈ થવાના કારણે પાણીના તળ 1000 થી 1200 ફૂટ ઊંડા ગયા. પરંપરાગત જળસ્રોતો એટલે કે, કુવા, તળાવ વગેરે બોરવેલ નહોતા ત્યારે સચવાતા પણ પછી તો નળ ખુલે અને પાણી મળે એટલે કુવા કે તળાવને સારવાનું - સરખા કરવાનું બંધ થયું. ભૂગર્ભમાં પાણી ઉતારવાનો મુખ્ય સ્ત્રોત તળાવો. જેને દર વર્ષે સરખા કરવાનું એટલે કે વરસાદી પાણી સાથે તળાવમાં આવેલો કાંપ કે રેતી, માટી સાફ કરવાનું થયું જ નહીં પરિણામે તળાવો પુરાતા ગયા અને પાણી સંગ્રહ થવાનું ઓછુ થયું.

આ વિસ્તારમાં વિચરતી જાતિઓ સાથે આપણે કામ કરીએ. એમાં ભૂગર્ભજળની સ્થિતિ ધ્યાને આવી અને જળ વ્યવસ્થાપનના કામો શરૃ કર્યા. મુંબઈ સ્થિત VSSM સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્વજનોની મદદથી અને આદરણીય શ્રી રશ્મીનભાઈ સંઘવીના માગર્દશન હેઠળ વડગામડાના બે તળાવ પેપળિયું અને સાજણસરી 2016માં ખોદાવ્યા. પરંતુ, 2016માં વરસાદ બહુ પડ્યો નહીં ને તળાવ ભરાયા નહીં. પણ વર્ષ 2017ના ચોમાસાની શરૃઆતમાં જ કુદરતે મહેર કરી અને બંને તળાવ ભરાયા જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે. પડાદર ગામનું 2017ના વર્ષમાં ખોદાવેલું મોટુચાંદરુ તળાવ પણ વરસાદમાં ભરાયું. જો કે આ વિસ્તારની જમીન ખુબ તરસી, પાછો તળાવમાં ભેગો થતો કાંપ અને રેતી, માટી આપણે તળાવ ખોદ્યું તે વખતે ખોદીને બહાર કાઢ્યો. જેના કારણે જમીનમાં પાણી ઉતરવાનું ઝડપથી થયું. વડગામડામાં તો અઠવાડિયામાં જ તળાવો 25 ટકા ખાલી થઈ ગયા. જે વધુ વરસાદ પડવાના કારણે ઊભરાયા હતા. (અમે અઠવાડિયા પછી ફોટો અને વિડીયોગ્રાફી કરી) તળાવો ધીમે ધીમે ખુબ જ ઓછા દિવસોમાં પાછા ખાલી થઈ જવાના. ખેડુતો કહે એમ ‘જો આ ચોમાસે હજુ બે –ચાર વાર આવો વરસાદ પડી જાય તો અમારા તળાવો બે થી ત્રણ વાર ભરાઈ જાય અને પાણી જમીનમાં સમાઈ જાય અને પાણીના તળ ઊંચા આવે.’

ગામનું પાણી ગામમાં અને સીમનું પાણી સીમમાં એ ભાવના સાથે ગામલોકો પણ પોતાના ગામમાં વરસતા તમામ પાણીને ગામની ભૂમીમાં સમાવવાનું કરે તે માટે કાર્યબદ્ધ થાય અને દર વર્ષે ગામના તળાવોને સરખા કરે તેમ ઈચ્છીએ.

મુંબઈથી આ કામો માટે મદદની શરૃઆત થઈ હવે તો અમદાવાદમાં રહેતા સ્વજનો પણ આ કામમાં જોડાયા છે જેનો આનંદ છે અને સૌના અમે આભારી છીએ.

2015 થી 2017 સુધીમાં વાડિયા, ડોડગામ, વડગામડા, નાનોલ, આસોદર, ઉંદરાણા, પડાદર અને આસોદર ગામોના કુલ 17 તળાવો ખોદાવ્યા અને હજુ આગળ ઘણા તળાવો પુનર્જિવીત કરવાના મનોરથ છે.

આ કામોમાં અત્યાર સુધી સહયોગી રહ્યા એવા સ્વજનો..

આપ સૌના સહયોગથી આ કામો થઈ શક્યા અમે સૌ આપના આભારી છીએ.. એક રીતે કુદરતને જીવંત રાખવાના કામમાં આપ સૌ નિમિત્ત બન્યા છો... આપ સૌ પ્રત્યે આદરભાવ...

50 Nomadic families got New Houses in Deesa

                                                                                                                                                          














HOME... this magical four lettered word, a safe and secure place filled with love, laughter, joy, hope, dreams, happiness, and so much more! A place we all wish and desire to create atleast once in a life time. As someone has rightly said, “There is nothing more important than a good, safe, secure home.” The privileged like us who might own one or two or even more physical spaces, will never understand the value of it but there are millions, who for generations have never lived in anything more than a shanty hut or under a tarpaulin owning a house is worth achieving a million dreams.

Thus, when the Deesa Nagarpalika decided to allot homes to nomadic families under the Rajiv Gandhi housing program,  on a concessional rates it was a dream

come true moment for many. On 13th July, the Deesa municipality organized a program to handover two room homes to 55 nomadic families of Deesa. It was the enthusiasm and hard work of Shri Pravinbhai Mali, President, Deesa Nagarpalika and his team of officials that remained instrumental in making this into a reality and helping the families realize their dreams.

The applicant families had to deposit Rs. 55,000 as down payment, but neither these extremely poor families have seen that kind of money nor did they have  any source to raise this much amount. But Shri Mali and our well-wishers helped us raise this amount. The families were provided aid of Rs. 45,000 through District Social Welfare Department. VSSM sent an appeal to its well-wishers to raise the balance Rs. 10,000 to be given as interest free loan to each of these families. We haven’t managed to raise the entire amount but the families have received possession to their homes. On the day the were handed over the keys to their homes, the families performed a small Pooja of their family deity as part of their house-warming ritual.  
                                              

“We have become house owners, no one from our previous generations has ever lived in a proper house, we are so blessed to have seen this day, I suddenly feel young and alive…living in barely covered houses in the woods exposed to the elements and wild life is  dreadful but now we have nothing to fear, no rain or sun or cold….” said an  elated Mafiben who is an aging widow from Deesa. This was the sentiment of all the families who received houses from Deesa Nagarpalika.

It would have been impossible to experience this moment without the support and cooperation of Deesa Nagarpalika and our Government. The actual price of the house is much higher but their compassion towards the nomadic communities made the authorities allot these homes at negligible price. We are extremely thankful to the Deesa Nagarpalika officials and government for their decision. Also, the endless love and support we receive from our well-wishers, we are grateful for the faith and support you provide to these endeavors. The amount you have donated has helped in providing interest free loan of Rs. 10,000 to these families.

Thank you for the overwhelming response to our call for providing help to nomadic families affected during the extremely heavy rains in Morbi’s Tankara. The support has helped us put-together a relief kit consisting of food-grains, snacks and spices. The team of VSSM worked beyond mid-night, our dear Jatinbhai- Divyaben offered their time and energy and our daughters staying in the hostel courageously pitched in when we were tired and helped us prepare the relief kits.

The families have received tarpaulin from the government while the Mamlatdar has committed cheques of Rs. 3,000 each.

પ્રિય અને વહાલા એવા આપ સૌ,

તમે સૌએ ટંકારામાં રહેતા વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારોને મદદરૃપ થવા હાથ લંબાવ્યો અને તેના કારણે જ આજે આ પરિવારોને અનાજની કીટ આપી શક્યા. 

VSSMની આખી ટીમે તા.4 જુલાઈના રાતના 1વાગ્યા સુધી જાગીને બધો જ સામાન પેક કર્યો. પ્રિય જતીનભાઈ દિવ્યાબહેન પણ આ કામમાં આર્થિકની સાથે સાથે શ્રમદાનમાં સહયોગી બન્યા.

અમારી હોસ્ટેલની નાની નાની દીકરીઓ હીંમત દાખવી. અમે થાક્યા ત્યાં એ બધી કામે લાગી.

આપ સૌ ના હોત તો આ કામ શક્ય ના બનત.

સરકારે પણ તાડપત્રીનું વિતરણ કર્યું. સાથે સાથે સરકારી સહાય પેટે રૃા.3000ના ચેક આપવાનું વચન પણ મામલતદાર શ્રી આપ્યું. પ્રિય કાર્તીકભાઈ તમે કરેલી ટીવ્ટે આજે કામ શરૃ કર્યું. કલેક્ટર પોતે ઓલોઅપ કરી રહ્યા છે...આભાર..

ક્યાં રાખશું સરાણિયાને? પોતાના ગામમાં રાખવાની બધા ના પાડીશું તો ક્યાં જશે આ લોકો?

મતદાર અને રેશનકાર્ડ મળ્યા તેનો હરખ ફોટોમાં દેખાય છે...
આ હરખ વિરોધના કારણે વિલાઈ ગયો છે...

‘અમે દેવપુરાના હરોણિયા(સરાણિયા). વર્ષોથી ગોમમાં ચોમાસુ રેતા. પણ અમારા નામે કોઈ કાગળ પત્તર મળે નહીં. સંસ્થા(VSSM)ના તોહીદભઈએ બધુ કઢાઈ આલ્યું. સરપંચના હાથે કેડ અલાયા. સરપંચ અમારા ઓગણે આયા એટલ અમન ઈમ ક હવ પંચાયત પલોટ માટે ના નઈ પાડ્ પણ....’

VSSMએ સરાણિયા પરિવારોને પ્લોટ મળે તેની દરખાસ્ત તૈયાર કરીને કલેક્ટર કચેરીમાં આપી. પણ આ દરખાસ્ત જેવી પંચાયતમાં ખરાઈ માટે પહોંચી કે સરપંચનો ફોન આવ્યો, ‘તોહીદભાઈ મતદારકેડ અને રેશનકેડ હુદી બધુ ઠીક હતું પણ તમે તો ઓમને ગોમમાં ધાલવાની વાત કરો સો એ નઈ બન્. દેવપુરા આખુ ગોમ રાજપુતોનું. હરોણિયાન ગોમમાં ઘાલુ તો આખુ ગોમ વિફર. ભઈ સાબ આ બધુ રેવા દો’.

કલરકામ કરવા ઝાઝા પૈસા નહતા પણ નટ સમુદાયના યુવાનોએ કોઈપણ શરત વગર કલરકામ કરી આપવાની તૈયારી બતાવી...

વાત્સલ્ય હોસ્ટેલમાં નટ યુવાનો સાથે મિત્તલબેન

અમારા બાળકોની હોસ્ટેલમાં કલર કરાવવો પડે એમ હતો. કલરના ખર્ચ કરતા કલર કરવાનો ખર્ચ વધુ થાય. પાસે એવા પૈસા નહિ. 350 બાળકો ને સાચવવાનો તેમના ભણવા, જમવાનો ખર્ચ જ ખુબ મોટો એમાં કલર... શું કરવું? ડીસામાં રહેતા નટ યુવાનો કલર કામ કરે એનો ખ્યાલ. મેં કિશનકાકા નટ સાથે વાત કરી અને પાસે ઝાઝા પૈસા નથી. જમવા અને રહેવાની વ્યવસ્થા કરીશું એમ કહ્યું. એમણે કહ્યું બેન ચિંતા ના કરો હું છોકરાંઓને મોકલું છું. નટ યુવાનો આવ્યા, 15 દિવસથી કલરકામ કરે છે. પણ એકેય વખત પૈસાની વાત કરી નથી.

આજે હોસ્ટેલ ગઈ ત્યારે એમણે સાથે ફોટો પડાવવા કહ્યું. ને ફોટો પાડ્યો. મેં કહ્યું અમારાથી જે બનશે એ આપીશ. પણ હાલ કશું નથી. એમણે કહ્યું, ‘તમે કો ને બેન તો માથું આલી દઈએ. અને આ બધું અમારા બાળકો માટે જ તો છે. ઓછું ના લાવો...’ અદભુત છે આ લોકો અને એવો જ અદભુત છે એમના પ્રેમ.

મન છે આ યુવાનોને કામના પૈસા આપવાનું. બધું ગોઠવાશે એમ લાગે છે. બાકી એમની સાથે આપણે સૌ ફોટો પડાવીયે એવા પ્રેમાળ છે આ લોકો.

અને હા વ્યક્તિગત રીતે મેં અને મારી ટીમે આ પ્રેમ મેળવ્યો છે જેનો દુનિયાની ભાષામાં કોઈ હિસાબ નથી.

થેલેસેમિયા ગ્રસ્ત મહેશને લોહી ચડાવે એટલે થોડા દિવસ ઠીક રહે પછી એ ઢીલો થઈ જાય....

“Sir, please save our son,  my wife and I are prepared to mop and clean your clinic our entire lives!!” was a heart wrenching plea Rachodbhai made to the doctor attending his son Mahesh. Rachodbhai Vadee had travelled from Patan to Ahmedabad to find a cure for his 3-year-old son Mahesh who is a Thalassemia major. Mahesh is third child of Sajanben and Ranchodbhai.  Their son born with Mahesh died within 10 days of his birth. Ever since they learnt about Mahesh’s medical condition when he was 10 months old, the couple has been making monthly rounds to hospitals for blood transfusion.

“It is so painful to see needles piercing his frail and tiny body!” Sajanben was in tears when she narrated the pain of witnessing the plight of her small child.

The family is enduring the financial challenge of getting Mahesh treated at a private hospital as they believe private facilities are better than government hospitals.

Rachodbhai has spent his entire life struggling to make two ends meet. The traditional occupation of bamboo basketry wasn’t rewarding enough hence he made a shift to trading plastic houseware. The family took a loan from VSSM to expand the business. The seed capital helped them increase their earning capacity. Gradually, Ranchodbhai began trading seasonal products. Like during the potato season he began taking laborers to factories, this helped him earn well. Once the season was over he would move on to his original business. Once the initial loan was paid off he applied for a bigger loan from VSSM and as he was investing in procuring material in bulk Mahesh’s illness worsened forcing him to spend some of the loan amount on his treatment.

The current condition of Mahesh is such that Rachodbhai is required to remain at home for day together. This has also affected family’s financial health.

“Ben, the doctors here are saying it will take Rs. 12 lakh to save Mahesh. I don’t have that kind of amount right not, if you can manage the money I promise I will repay single penny, trust me!!”

We have spoken to organizations working on Thalassemia, they have committed us to take the case to doctors working on this medical condition. But until that happens we are making sure Mahesh receives good treatment and care from Civil Hospital of Palanpur. If required VSSM’s team member Mahesh will accompany the couple to the hospital.

For now, we have been able to provide relief to Rachodbhai and Sajanben. The anxiety they had in the morning has subsided and  were pretty relaxed when they left office to go back home.

We are going to try our best to make sure Mahesh walks out of his medical condition. We pray for that little bit of luck and love from the almighty.


‘સાહેબ હું અન મારી વહુ આખી જીંદગી તમાર દવાખોનામ પોતુ મારસુ પણ મારા સોકરાંન બચાઈ લો.’ પોતાના વહાલસોય દીકરા મહેશને લઈને પાટણ અને અમદાવાદના ડોક્ટરો પાસે છેલ્લા બે વર્ષથી ધક્કા ખાતા રણછોડભાઈ વાદીએ કાકલુદી કરતા ડોક્ટરને કહ્યું.

થેલેસેમિયા મેજરથી પીડાતો ત્રણ વર્ષનો મહેશ, રણછોડભાઈ અને સાજનબહેનનું ત્રીજુ સંતાન. મહેશ સાથે જન્મેલો ભાઈ તો દસ જ દિવસમાં મૃત્યુ પામ્યો. મહેશની બિમારીનો ખ્યાલ દસમાં મહિને આવ્યો. ત્યારથી તેને મહિનામાં કેટલીયે વાર લોહીની બોટલો ચડે છે. 

‘ઈના આવડા શરીરમાં હોયો ભોંકાતી જોવાતી નહીં પણ...’ આટલું બોલતા સાજનબહેનની આંખો ભીની ગઈ. ખાનગી ડોક્ટરો સારી સારવાર કરે તેવું સૌ માને એટલે રણછોડભાઈ પણ મહેશની સારવાર ખાનગી દવાખાનામાં કરાવે. રણછોડભાઈ વાંસવાદી ડીસામાં છાપરુ કરીને રહે. બાપાની જેમ આખી જીંદગી રઝળપાટ જ કર્યો. વાંસના ટોપલાં બનાવીને જીંદગી જીવાય એમ નહોતી એટલે પ્લાસ્ટીકના તગારાં વેચવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. ધંધો વધારવા VSSMએ પહેલાં પંદર હજારની લોન આપી. વેપાર સરસ ચાલ્યો. જાત મહેનતથી કમાવવાના રસ્તાય ઘણા જડ્યા. બટાકાની સીઝનમાં ફેકટરીમાં કામદારો લઈ જવાનું શરૃ કર્યું એમાંય સારા પૈસા મળે. બટેકાની સીઝન પતે એટલે તબકડાં વેચે. બચત પણ ઠીક ઠીક થઈ. ફરી ધંધામાં મોટુ રોકાણ કરવાનું વિચાર્યું. VSSM રણછોડભાઈ જેવા જ માણસોની સંસ્થા, કાર્યકર મહેશ સાથે ફરી ત્રીસ હજારની લોન આપવા તેમણે વાત કરી. સંસ્થાએ લોન આપી. થોડા તગારાં વગેરે લાવ્યા ત્યાં દીકરાની બિમારી વધી એમાંય થોડા પૈસા વપરાયાં. મહેશને લોહી ચડાવે એટલે થોડા દિવસ ઠીક રહે પછી એ ઢીલો થઈ જાય ત્યારે રણછોડભાઈ એની સાથે  ઘરે જ રહે. 

‘બેન અમદાવાદના ડોક્ટરે મહેશને હાજો કરવા 12 લાખનો ખર્ચો કીધો. મારા સોકરા ન બચાઈ લો. હું દૂધે ધોઈન પૈસા આલી દઈશ. અતાર મારી આગળ ફદિયોય નહીં પણ વિસવાહ રાખો.. ’

દીકરા મહેશની સારવાર પાલનપુર સિવીલમાં મફત થશે અને તે માટે જ્યારે જરૃર પડે કાર્યકર મહેશ તેમની સાથે જશે તેવો સધિયારો અમે આપ્યો. સાથે તેના બધા જ રીપોર્ટ થેલેસેમિયા દર્દીઓ સાથે કામ કરતી સંસ્થાના લોકોને કહ્યા. તેમણે ઓપરેશન માટે પોતે જ હોસ્પીટલ સાથે ગોઠવણ કરી આપશે તેવી વાત કરી, હાલ પુરતી રાહ જોવા કહ્યું અને જે દવા ચાલે છે તે ચાલુ રાખવા કહ્યું. 

સવારે રણછોડભાઈ ઓફીસ આવ્યા ત્યારે ભારે હૈયે હતા પણ ઓફીસથી જતા હળવા થઈને ગયા. 

મહેશને સારુ થઈ જાય તે માટે શક્ય કોશિશ કરવી રહી બસ કુદરત પણ મદદ કરે તેમ ઈચ્છીએ...

Tharad’s Aasodar village was selected for the water conservation efforts

The alarming situation of the ground water levels should send shock waves, yet we as a society have decided to largely ignore the current and impending water crisis. The rampant exploitation of ground water across Gujarat has left our ground water tables in extremely sorry state. The situation is so bad that if not addressed on urgent basis we will be running out of water much much sooner than expected.

VSSM has been working with thousands of nomadic families across Gujarat. The northern areas of Gujarat have fairly large concentration of these communities. Water and the scarcity of it is one of the most pressing issues of this region, the scarcity of it is experienced across communities. Vast spans of barren arid land are the usual landscape we get to see here. The water table in Banaskantha, one of the largest districts of Gujarat has depleted up to 1200 feet. The traditional sources of water like lakes and wells lie ignored as water is now sourced from bore wells and canals. The regular repair and upkeep of common sources of water is remains non-existent. The neglect has gravely deteriorated the health of common property resources in most villages and towns across the landscape. The ground-water issues and looming water crisis in Banaskantha made us take the decision to initiate water conservation works in the Tharad. VSSM received the required support from its well-wishers and friends based in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. In the initial year we began with deepening two lakes in Tharad.

The entire effort is led under expert advice and monitoring of respected Shri. Rashminbhai Sanghvi. Our dear and respected shared the desire to support the lake deepening works of one village by donating Rs. 10 lakhs in loving memory of his departed daughter, Amita.

Tharad’s Aasodar village was selected for the water conservation efforts, we had already excavated two lakes and decided to go ahead with deepening another 5 lakes which had lost its depth to floods of July 2015. “We had forgotten these lakes, but now realize the importance. The water will seep in and help in raising the ground water table,” expressed the residents of Aasodar. It is too much to expect, the water levels won’t rise so soon as the annual rainfall in this region is also very low. All we can hope and pray for is a good monsoon.…..we are hopeful that nature will support us in our sincere endeavors.

We are grateful to Shri Pradipbhai, his better half Smt. Kokilaben and their daughter Nanditaben for taking the memory of dear Amita forward through such a precious and noble cause……

બનાસકાંઠાના ઉત્તરે થરાદ વિસ્તારમાં પાણીના તળ 1000 થી 1200 ફૂટ ઊંડા ગયા. પરંપરાગત જળસ્ત્રોતો જેવા કે, તળાવ, કુવા વગેરેનું પહેલા સારકામ થતું પણ નહેર અને બોરવેલથી પાણી મળવા લાગ્યા એટલે આ સારકામ બંધ થયું. VSSM વિચરતી જાતિઓ સાથે કામ કરે. પણ થરાદ વિસ્તારમાં ભૂગર્ભજળની આ સ્થિતિ જોયા પછી ત્યાં જળવ્યવસ્થાપનના કામો કરવા જરૃરી લાગ્યા અને તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. મુંબઈ અને અમદાવાદમાં બેઠેલા સ્વજનોનો સહયોગ મળવા લાગ્યો એટલે એક ગામમાં બે તળાવ ખોદાવવાનું કર્યુ. 

આદરણીય પ્રદિપભાઈ શાહ જેઓ VSSMના શુભચિંતક અને સેવાકાર્યોમાં હંમેશાં અગ્રેસર. આદરણીય રશ્મીનભાઈ સંઘવી કે જેમના માર્ગદર્શન હેઠળ તળાવ ઊંડા કરવાના કામો VSSM દ્વારા થાય. પ્રદિપભાઈએ તેમને એક આખા ગામના તમામ તળાવો ઊંડા કરવા મદદરૃપ થવા વાત કરી અને તે માટે તેમની વહાલી દીકરી અમીતાની યાદીમાં રુપિયા 10 લાખનું અનુદાન આપ્યું. 

થરાદનું આસોદર ગામ અમે પસંદ કર્યું. જ્યાં VSSM સાથે સંકળાયેલા શુભેચ્છક સ્વજનોની મદદથી બે તળાવો ખોદી ચુક્યા હતા ત્યાં અમે બીજા પાંચ તળાવ ખોદવાનું તેને શક્ય પહોળા અને સરખા કરવાનું કર્યું. જુલાઈ 2015માં આવેલા પુરથી અમુક તળાવો તો પુરાઈ ગયા હતા જેને અમે ખોદ્યા. 

આસોદરગામ તો ખુબ રાજી છે. ગામલોકો કહે છે, ‘અમે તળાવો ભુલી જ ગયા હતા પણ એની મહત્તા હવે સમજાય છે. જમીનમાં પાણી ઉતારવું છે જેથી ફરીથી તળ ઊંચા આવે.’ વાત અઘરી છે. અને આમ ઝટ તળ ઊંચા આવવાના પણ નથી. પાછો વરસાદ પણ આ વિસ્તારમાં ઓછો પડે. પણ મનોરથ સેવ્યા છે તો કુદરત મદદ કરશે તેવી શ્રદ્ધા પણ છે. 

સ્વ.વહાલી દીકરી અમીતાની યાદને જળમંદીરના રૃપમાં અમર કરવાની ભાવના વાળા આદણીય પ્રદિપભાઈ તેમના પત્ની કોકીલાબહેન અને તેમની દીકરી નંદીતાબહેનને સલામ અને તેમના પ્રત્યે કૃતજ્ઞતા..
