Adhgam's Vala Ba shows Awareness about Water Conservation

Vala Ba is a very sharp and smart farmer from the village of Adhgam in Kankrej block. He worked tirelessly along with the Sarpanch and the leaders of his village to ensure that the lake of his village was deepened as a part of our drive mitigate the crippling water situation in drought prone and arid Banaskantha. Eventually the lake did get excavated through the support of Gems and Jewellery National Relief Foundation. However, Gujarat has experienced weak monsoon this year resulting into deficient water in its traditional water bodies. The government did supply water through the Narmada Project eventually brimming up this lake.

The ground water levels in the region have gone to a low of 800 to 1000 feet. In absence of any alternate irrigation facilities the farmers have been pumping out the water to meet all their irrigation needs. Now, with the water in the lake they do not require to pump out the groundwater.

Vala Ba knew that if water reached the lake he would be able to recharge his failed bore-well and that is what he did. Using a 5 HP pump she injected water into the dried bore-well and recharged it. He is now able to draw water from 500 feet. If all the farmers in the region portrayed this wisdom we might be able to get respite from this worsening water situation. Our very wise Vala Ba exhibited this foresight and acted upon it.

Our respected Rashminbhai who has been the reason we plunged into Water Management always tells us, “If we can succeed in diverting  the flood waters into the ground, the ground water tables would rise up drastically!! All we need to do is plan better.”

Had the lake of Adhgam village filled up with rain water, we would have rejoiced even more. The Narmada waters will help the farmers and also succeed in recharging the ground water levels.

We are grateful to Gem and Jewellery foundation and Rashminbhai for their guidance and support. If not for their support such tasks would have been challenging to achieve.

ગુજરાતી અનુવાદ

વાલા બા બહુ હોંશિયાર ખેડુત. કાંકરેજ તાલુકાના અધગામમાં એ રહે. પોતાના ગામનું તળાવ ઊંડુ થાય એમાં સરપંચ ને ગામના અન્ય સાથે એ ખુબ મથે. એમના ગામનું તળાવ જેમ એન્ડ જવેલરી નેશનલ રીલીફ ફાઉન્ડેશનની મદદથી અમે ખોદાવ્યું. પણ વરસાદ પડ્યો જ નહીં. 

જો કે સરકારે આ ગામનું તળાવ નર્મદાની પાઈપથી ભરાવ્યું. ને અમને તળાવ ઊંડા કર્યાનું લેખે લાગ્યા જેવું લાગ્યું.

ગામમાં બોરવેલ ઘણા ને ખેડુતો ભુગર્ભમાંથી પાણી ઉલેચી ખેતી કરે. એટલે પાણીના તળ 800 થી 1000 ફૂટ ઊંડા પહોંચ્યા. પણ તળાવ ભરાવવાનું જ્યારથી શરૃ થયું ત્યારથી ભુગર્ભમાંથી પાણી ઉલેચાવાનું પ્રમાણ ઘટ્યું.

વાલાબાએ તળાવમાં પાંચ હોર્સ પાવરની એક મોટર મુકીને પોતાના ફેઈલ ગયેલા બોરવેલના કાણામાં પાણી ઉતારવાનું કર્યું. છેલ્લા ઘણા વખતથી થતી આ પ્રક્રિયાના લીધે તેમને 500 ફુટે પાણી મળવાનું શરૃ થયું.

આ થઈ વાત વોટર રીચાર્જની. દરેક ખેડુત આવી સમજણ રાખે તો કેટલું મોટું કામ થાય એટલે જ વાલાબા માટે વિશેષ માન થયું.

આદરણીય રશ્મીનભાઈ જેમણે અમને પાણીના કામો કરવા પ્રેર્યા એ હંમેશાં કહે ક્યાંય પણ પુર આવે અને પુરનું બધુ જ પાણી જમીનમાં ઉતારવામાં આવે તો પાણીના તળ કેટલા ઊંચા આવી જાય.. આ માટે બસ સુદ્રઢ આયોજનની જરૃર છે.

ખેર અધગામનું તળાવ નર્મદાના પાણીની ભરાયું. જોઈને રાજી થયા. છીછરુ તળાવ અમે ખોદાવ્યું એટલે તળાવમાં પાણી વધુ વખત ટકશે ને ખેડુતોને ફાયદો પણ થશે. સાથે પાણી જમીનમાં ઉતરવાનું પણ ખરુ.

આભાર જેમ એન્ડ જેવલરી નેશનલ રીલીફ ફાઉન્ડેશન, આદરણીય રશ્મીનભાઈનો... આપની મદદ અને માર્ગદર્શન ના મળ્યું હોત તો આ કામો થવા મુશ્કેલ હતા.

Nine years is not a small period, there are families who have been waiting for the past nine years for their applications to see the light of the day!!! Each day begins with a hope that today might be the day they receive the good news of their  application being sanctioned!!

How can we think of re-birth when this life has been  all about the unaccomplished wishes. They talk about detachment honestly, there is nothing for us here to be attached too. You wouldn’t be clinging to these shanties or these torn durries.  Will you ?? When death finally comes we would feel relieved to be free from this life of deprivation. They say all the unfulfilled desires will be carried forward. We fear that what if we get the same fate in our next birth, what if we still had to wait for decades to acquire a ration card or  house in our other life. And our eyes will continue to dream of the day when we will actually hold our ration card or will not? To tell you the truth, we  dread such  after-life…..

It is not so difficult to issue ration card or sanction a small plot of land. If the lawmakers have the will to serve the poor this is the easiest task to implement.  What is difficult though, is to stop playing games, they need to stop sending us from table to another table. We are tired of these constant rounds to the offices of Mamlatdar, Deputy Collector, Collector, Sachivalay…..

We do not have anything to clean or tidy up but you  have this practice  of cleaning your homes and offices before Diwali, right? This Diwali why not choose to clean the dust that has gathered over our applications and files and give us a brighter Diwali. Bring that light in our life this festival is associated with.

Personally, I too get tired these days with the never ending wait for sanctions and approvals. While for this utterly honest and humble communities such wait is proving to be exhausting. Isn’t there a single person in the system who really cares for the poor?

Optimism... and hope...

સીંગલ વિન્ડો સીસ્ટમ તકવંચિતોના સાવ સામાન્ય કહી શકાય તેવા કામો માટે ના થઈ શકે?

સાવ સાવ સામાન્ય કહી શકાય તેવી બાબતોમાં નવ વર્ષ લાગી જાય... નવ વર્ષ એ કાંઈ નાનો સમય ગાળો છે?

'આંખો આજ મળશે કાલ મળશે એવા સ્વપ્ન જોતા જોતા જ બંધ થઈ જાય.

લોકો પુનઃજન્મની વાત કરે. અમારો જીવ તો ના પુરા થયેલા સમણાંઓમાં જ રહ્યો. લોકો કહે દુનિયામાંથી જતી વખતે ઈશ્વરનું સ્મરણ કરો. આ માયામાંથી મુ્કત થઈને જાવ. ભગવાનમાં જીવ પરોવો. હું કહુ કે, માયા ક્યાં આપી જ છે તે એમાં જીવ રહી જાય. બે ચાર ગાભાના ગોદડા ને ઠીબામાં શું જીવ રહી જાય.. આમ તો છૂટ્યાનો હાશકારો થાય પણ પછી આગળ પણ આજ માયા મળશે અને ઘર કે રેશનકાર્ડની રાહમાં ફરી આવતા જન્મેય ક્યાંક આંખ મીંચાશે તો? સાચુ કહુ તો બીક લાગે છે આ ભવભવના ફેરાઓથી...

કશીએ ખેવના અધુરી મુકીને નથી જવું... રહેવા ટુકડો જમીન ને રેશનકાર્ડ ને એવું જ કાંઈક બીજુ મળે એની મનેચ્છા સેવી... આ બધુ આપવું બહુ અઘરુ નથી. અમારા જેવા ગરીબોને મદદ કરવાની ચાહના હોય તો બધુયે થાય...

પણ એ માટે ફાઈલ ફાઈલ રમવાનું બંધ કરવું પડે... બાકી તો મામલતદાર થી લઈને પ્રાંત કલેક્ટર થી લઈને કલેક્ટર થી લઈને સચિવાલયના ધક્કા...હવે થાક્યા ભ'ઈ સાબ. 

દિવાળીમાં ઘરમાં પડેલો કચરો તમે બધા સાફ કરો છો ને? તમે એટલા માટે લખ્યું કારણ અમારી પાસે તો સાફ સફાઈ કરવાનું રાચરચીલું હોતતો જોઈતું તુ શું. ખેર આ દિવાળીની સફાઈની જેમ કચેરીમાં પડેલી ફાઈલો પરની ધૂળ હટાવવાનું ને એની સફાઈ સાચા અર્થમાં થાય તો અમારીએ દિવાળીએ સુધરી જાય... '

વ્યક્તિગત રીતે હુંય થાકુ છું તો અમારા આ સાવ સીધા સાદા માણસો માટે તો આ માયાજાળ હંફાવનારી સાબિત થઈ રહી છે. સીસ્ટમમાં એવો કોઈ માણસ ના હોઈ શકે જે આવા લોકો માટે ખરી નિસ્બત દાખવે...

“We have endured this way of living for ages, we can manage to  survive even underneath a tarpaulin but do something for these poor fellows!!! To us they are more than our children, we get up in the middle of night to check if they are all ok. It is our responsibility to take care of them!!”

Who do you think they are talking about??

Valabapa and Okhima Parkara Koli of Benap village are talking about the pigeons they have sheltered. This aging couple live under extremely poor conditions, earning their living as daily wagers. Few years back they bought home a pair of pigeons from Deesa, nurtured them, cared for them more than their own life. The love and protection they showered over the two gradually attracted pigeons from around the area. The couple welcomed them all with open heart. Today they are caretakers of around 2000 pigeons.

The couple are finding it difficult to sustain their family as well as this whooping number of  birds they provide shelter to.

“A parent will never abandon her/his children, how can we even think of disowning this flock. They are  children to us,” expressed Okhima.

The flock of Bapa and Ma is often attacked by other birds and animals of prey. The Shikra/hawk hovering around find it easy to prey upon such a huge flock. “Once we bought plastic net to wrap around the birds’ shelter but after it broke we haven’t been able to buy it again!”

On one occasion Valabapa’s son-in-law had come to attend a function along with his pet dog and the dog killed two pigeons. Valabapa felt so hurt that with folded hands requested his son-in-law to take his dog and leave. Such is his compassion towards his pigeons.

Had they been blessed with enough resources,  Valabapa would have built a house for  his pets. The family survives on bare minimum in such circumstances it is a challenge to meet the needs of this ever growing avian family. Yet with the limited means the family has built this simple looking house for the birds. However,  what they need is a chabutra traditional raised platform like structure for birds.  

We are grateful to Mumbai’s  Maharshibhai who is an avid bird and wild-life enthusiast for contributing towards the construction of the chabutro. It is because of friends and our extended family  like you that we can even imagine of providing protection to not just the humans but to such fauna as well.

Our respects to Valabapa for his unmatched compassion towards these birds.

ગુજરાતીમાં રૂપાંતર 

'અમાર તો મેણીયું હશે તોય ચાલશે પણ તમે આમનું કાંક કરો..

સોકરાં કરતાય વધુ હાસવીએ સે. અન હાસવવા જ પડન. રાતના ઊઠી ઊઠી ન બધા બરાબર સે ક નઈ એ જોવું સુ.'

આટલું વાંચીને આ કોની વાત થઈ રહી છે તેવું લાગે ને? 

વાત છે પારેવાની- કબૂતરની અને કબુતર સાચવનાર બેણપગામના વાલાબાપા અને ઓખીમા પારકરા કોળીની.

સાવ સામાન્ય સ્થિતિમાં રહેતો આ પરિવાર મજુરી કરીને પોતાનું ગુજરાન ચલાવે. થોડા વર્ષો પહેલાં ડીસા ગયેલા ને ત્યાંથી બે કબુતરા લઈ આવેલા ને એ બે ને જીવની જેમ સાચવ્યા ને એમાંથી આસપાસના બીજા બધાય એમની પાસે આવતા થયા. આમ કુલ બે હજાર કરતાય વધુ કબુતરોના એ આશ્રયદાતા બની ગયા. 

પોતાનો સંસાર ને પારેવાનો આ સંસાર ગરીબ પરિવારને નભાવવો અઘરો પડે છે 

'પણ આપણા સોકરાંને ઘરથી થોડા કાઢી મુકાય ઈમ પારેવાય સોકરાં જેવા જ સે તો એમને કેમ કાઢી મુકાય?' એવું ઓખીમાએ કહ્યું.

બાજ પક્ષી આવે ને કબૂતરને પગમાં દબાવીને લઈ જાય. જોઈને બેયનો જીવ કપાઈ ગયો. એટલે કબૂતર બચાવ માટે પ્લાસ્ટીકની જાળી લઈ આવ્યા. પણ આર્થિક હાલત કથળેલી એટલે જાળી એક ફેરા લાવ્યા તૂટ્યા પછી નવી નથી લાવી શક્યા. 

વાલાબાપાના ઘરે પ્રસંગ હતો ને એમના જમાઈ એમનો પાળેલો કૂતરો લઈને વાલાબાપાના ઘરે આવ્યા. 

કૂતરાએ બે કબૂતરને મારી નાખ્યા. વાલાબાપાનો જીવ દુભાવો. જમાઈને બે હાથ જોડીને કૂતરા સાથે પ્રસંગ છોડી ઘેર જવા કહી દીધુ. આવો અદભુત પ્રેમ વાલાબાપાનું આખુ કુટુંબ કબુતકો ને કરે.

પૈસા હોય એ તો બધુયે કરી શકે પણ પૈસા ના હોય. પોતે શેર લાવી ને ખાતા હોય આવામાં જીવદયા કરવી એના માટે તો જીગર ને ખુબ મોટુ મન જોઈએ..

કબૂતર હાલ જ્યાં રહે છે તે જગ્યા નાની છે. મહેનત કરીને પરિવારે કબુતર માટે હાલ દેખાય છે એ ઘર બનાવ્યું પણ જરૃરિયાત મોટી ને કબુતરોને સુરક્ષીત રાખી શકાય તેવા ચબુતરાની છે.

આમ તો મુંબઈના પશુપક્ષી પ્રેમી મહર્ષીભાઈ સાથે આ બાબતે વાત કરી તો એમણે કહ્યું આપણે ચબુચરો બનાવવામાં મદદ કરીશું. આભાર મહર્ષીભાઈ..

વાલાબાપાના પારેવા પ્રેમને પ્રણામ.. અને તમારા જેવા માણસોના કારણે જ આ ધરતી પર માણસ ઉપરાંત અન્ય જીવો જીવી રહ્યા છે નહીં તો માણસનું ચાલે તો.........

Water Management work to begin soon in Benap Village of Suigam Block

Benap is the farthest village of Suigam, Gujarat’s farthest block. Situated in Banaskantha region this is an arid drought prone region. Thanks to our decades of official planning and implementation of various government programs this and many other villages in the region have remained fairly untouched by development. The people here are very honest and simple.

Pragjibhai Rajput, the Sarpanch of Benap is a caring and compassionate human being. Seldom do we come across leaders who consider all villagers as equal and work for their betterment. The poor and marginalised hold a special place in Pragjibhai’s heart.

Benap sits right next to the Rann of Kutch, part of the great White Rann which has gained popularity in recent times. If we had to erase  all the touristy awe towards this landscape, life for the locals here is extremely tough. Benap’s arid landscape means it is a water starved region. Rainfed agriculture is the primary source of livelihood. The village has almost 8 lakes that remain empty for most part of the year. If the lakes were to be brimming with water life can turn out to be a boon for the villagers here. Since Benap is just adjacent to the Rann it has one advantage, the rain water flows through here to the Rann. The Rann is full of water during the monsoons until Diwali after which it begins to dry up. Because of its location the lakes of Benap have the potential to beam with water.

A minor canal of Narmada project does pass from near the village but the canal itself remains empty. 2018 has been a rain deficit year for Gujarat and the drought prone regions of North Gujarat have remained devoid of rains this year. The shallow lakes of Benap are spread across many hectors, if we deepen these lakes with proper planning and implementation we can succeed in catching the rain water and recharge the ground water too.

The condition of Benap is extremely distressful, the single rain-fed crop  they depended on too is not feasible this year. It has become a challenge for the daily wage earners to find labour. In the given condition it is imperative that we begin relief work as soon as possible in this village. We have decided to get the villagers involved with the excavation works at one of the 8 lakes. This will ensure work and daily wage for the participating labourers. The other lake will be deepened using the JCB.

The water conservation efforts have financial support of Mumbai based Nanditabahen Parekh, Bhanubahen and other well-wishers of VSSM. This extremely deprived region requires lot of concentrated efforts for its development. VSSM is committed to support as much as it can but it would be apt if people from these regions who have went on to settle and flourish elsewhere contribute for the much needed development of their native villages, the homeland.

સૂઈગામ તાલુકાનું છેવાડાનું ગામ બેણપ.

સાવ સીધા સાદા માણસો ગામમાં રહે. સરપંચ પ્રાગજીભાઈ રાજપૂત તો ખુબ ભલા. ગામના તમામ માટે ખુબ લાગણી. પણ વંચિતો માટે જરા વિશેષ પ્રેમ.

બેણપ રણકાંઠાનું છેવાડાનું ગામ. ચોમાસું ખેતી ત્યાં થાય. ગામમાં તળાવોની સંખ્યા આઠેક જેટલી. જો તળાવ ભરાય તો ગામ આખુ ખેતી કરી શકે.પણ આ વિસ્તારમાં વરસાદ ખુબ ઓછો પડે. પણ ઉપરવાસમાં વરસાદ પડે એનું પાણી બેણપમાં થઈને રણને મળે એટલે તળાવો ભરાવવાની શક્યતાઓ ખરી.

આમ તો નર્મદાની માઈનોર કેનાલ ગામની નજીકથી પસાર થાય પણ તેમાં ખાસ પાણી છોડવામાં આવતું નથી. આમ પણ આ વખતે ગુજરાતમાં પાણીની અછત છે. પણ જો વ્યવસ્થિત આયોજન થાય તો બેણપનું તળાવ કેટલાય હેક્ટરમાં ફેલાયેલું છે અેને ભરી શકાય. વળી તળાવ ઊંડુ હોય તો ચોમાસા દરમ્યાન ગામમાં આવતા પાણીનો સંગ્રહ પણ સારો થાય. પણ ગામના તળાવો છીછરા છે.

વર્ષ 2018નું ચોમાસુ આ વિસ્તારમાં બેઠુ જ નહીં. વરસાદ ના થતા આખા વિસ્તારની હાલત કથળી. ખેતી પણ થવાની નહીં. આવામાં મજુરી તો ક્યાંથી મળે.

સમગ્ર સ્થિતિ જોયા પછી આ વિસ્તારમાં રાહતના કામો શરૃ કરવાનો વિચાર આવ્યો.

ગામનું એક તળાવ લોકો હાથમજુરી કરીને ખોદાવે તેવું આયોજન કરવાનું કર્યું. જેથી લોકોને કામ મળે ને બીજુ ખુબ તળાવ જેસીબીથી ખોદીશું. જેથી વરસાદી પાણીનો સંગ્રહ થઈ શકે. કાર્યકર નારણ અને ભગવાનની દેખરેખમાં આ કામો કરીશું.

મુંબઈમાં રહેતા નંદીતાબહેન પારેખ, ભાનુબહેન ને અન્ય સ્વજનો આ કામમાં સહયોગ કરશે પણ આ વિસ્તારના ગામોની હાલત અત્યંત ખરાબ છે. ખુબ પછાત એવા આ વિસ્તાર માટે ખુબ કામ કરવાની જરૃર છે. 

VSSM તો સહયોગ કરશે પણ આ વિસ્તારના લોકો જેઓ ગામ છોડીને કામ ધંધા અર્થે બહાર રહે છે તેઓ મદદ કરે તો પણ ઘણું મોટુ કામ થાય.

Remembering Maharaja Bhagwatsinhji of Gondal and his generosity

Ben, Kanubhai (VSSM fieldworker) has helped us acquire the ration cards, election cards, bank account and more now all we need is piece of land to build  a roof on our head. Once I have a pucca house, there is nothing more that I want in life,” shared  Gondal’s Hamirbhai Vansfoda during a recent visit.  

Wishing for basic food, clothing and housing isn’t too much to expect, for the poor and marginalised owning a one room pucca house is dream of a lifetime. 

Talking about attainment of fundamental rights in the town of Gondal in ironic because this was one of the most progressive state of the past. The  erstwhile king of Gondal, Maharaja Bhagwatsinhji had made education compulsory in those days.

Gondal was the only state  to have compulsory education for girls in all villages. It was one of the foremost states to join independent India with a humongous amount of wealth. The much travelled and wise Bhagwatsinhji had successfully worked for social development of his kingdom.

I have tremendous respect for the vision of Maharaja Bhagwatsinhji. I am sure the poor wouldn’t be reeling under such apathy had he been the current reigning ruler.

“The locals don’t even care for us Ben!! This time when you come we want to welcome you with drums and trumpets. We want them to know here is someone who cares for us!! Personally, I am not in favour of such pomp and show but we need to understand why Hamirbhai wants to show off our presence. Why does Hamirbhai feel such strong connection with someone based and living in Ahmedabad, why doesn’t he share the similar feeling for people of Gondal or Rajkot. I don’t think I need to answer that question!!!

'બેન હવે ઘર માટે જમીન મલી જાય તો હંધુય આવી ગ્યું. આ રેશનકાર્ડ, મતદારકાર્ડ, બેંકમાં ખાતા એ બધુ તો કનુભાઈએ (VSSM ના કાર્યકર) કરી દીધું.' ગોંડલમાં રહેતા હમીરભાઈ વાંસફોડાએ એમની લાગણી અમારી સામે મુકી.

માથુ ઘાલવા પોતાની જગ્યા મળવી એનાથી મોટુ સુખ ગરીબ માટે શું હોઈ શકે. ખેર હમીરભાઈને કહ્યું, 'હમીરભાઈ આજે જો ગોંડલ સ્ટેટ અકબંધ હોત રાજા ભગવતસિંહજી આજે જીવતા હોત ને તમે એમની પ્રજા હોત તો કદાચ તમારે આમ છાપરાંમાં ના રહેવું પડત. એ ગરીબોની સામે નક્કી જુઅત ને તમારી આમ પોતાની માલીકીની જમીનમાં રહેવાની ઈચ્છા જરૃર પૂરી થાત...'

ગોંડલના રાજા પ્રત્યે મને જુદો આદરભાવ છે. આઝાદ ભારતમાં રજવાડાઓનું વીલીનીકરણ થઈ રહ્યું હતું ત્યારે ગોંડલ સ્ટેટ પહેલું હતું જે ઢગલો પૈસા સાથે અખંડ ભારતમાં જોડાયું હતું. પ્રજાની નાની નાની બાબતોની ચિંતા રાજાજી કરતા.

વિદેશમાં જઈને પોતાના રાજ્યના વિકાસ માટે શું કરવું જોઈએ તે જોયું ને ગોંડલમાં તેમણે એ બધુ અમલી કરવા કોશીશ કરી. ફરજિયાત શિક્ષણની વાત આજે થાય છે જ્યારે ગોંડલમાં ફરજિયાત કન્યા કેળવણી તેમણે એ વખતે દાખલ કરેલી.

'સ્થાનીક લોકો અમને ગણતા જ નથી બેન તે આલી ફેરા તમે આવો તો મંડપ બાંધવા સે ને ઢોલ શરણાઈ વગડાવવી સે બધાન ખબર પાડવી સે કે અમાર ગરીબોના સારપે આવવાવાળાય કોક સે...'

વ્યક્તિગત રીતે મંડપ, ઢોલ,શરણાઈ ગમતા નથી. પણ હમીરભાઈને દુનિયાને બતાવવું કેમ છે તે આપણે સૌએ સમજવાની જરૃર છે..

છેક અમદાવાદમાં બેઠેલા અમે એને પોતાના લાગીએ તો ગોંડલવાળા, રાજકોટવાળા હમીરભાઈના પોતાના ના બની શકે? પ્રશ્નનો જવાબ તમે જ તમારી જાતને આપો...

બાકી ખુબ પ્રેમથી મને ભાવતું કંકોડાનું શાક રોટલા એમણે જમાડ્યા. બેન આ અમારો અસલ દાગીનો એમ કહીને મને ગળામાં હાર પણ પહેરાવ્યો. 

જ્યાં રહે છે એ જોતા પાકા ઘરની ઝંખના સેવાય એતો યોગ્ય જ છે ને....

The incidence of a 16 year old woman being gang raped and murdered had spread a sense of shock and grief. As if the trauma of such inhumane and grave act wasn’t enough, the delay in arrest of the accused was even more painful for the family and community members. The accused were sent behind the bars only after the matter was taken before the ACP.

“Ben, please ensure that my daughter gets justice,” requested father of the child after the news that the accused was released on bail reached us. How could we tolerate such a decision by the court!?

The accused had applied for bail in the High Court and contesting a case here requires lot of money which the poor family who was subjected to such heinous crime had none.

Niyatiben Bhatt is a very dear friend and well-wisher of VSSM. “Let me know if I can be of any help to VSSM,” she always tells us. She has been helping us in some previous cases pertaining to nomadic communities. Hence, we requested for some more help from her especially for this case. As soon as she heard the facts about it she immediately intervened and a case was filed.

After listening to Niyatiben’s arguments, the High Court revoked the decision to grant bail to the accused.

The development has sent a wave of relief and cheer amongst  the family member’s  and individuals striving to ensure the family receives justice. Jyotsnaben has been fighting the case in lower court and trying hard to get  tough punishment for the accused. Niyatiben's efforts had provided her the much needed support. VSSM will always remain grateful  Jyotsnaben for her selfless support.  We are also grateful to Lalitbhai who has been pillar of strength to this family.

The Raval family who has been fighting for justice is up against the influential and   powerful in the village hence this development of cancellation of bail  is seen as victory, however small it may seem!! The father is prepared to fight it out and make sure his daughter receives justice.

We are hopeful that the court  will do justice to our dear daughter. There are people whom she has never know or never met who are fighting to ensure the culprits receive the toughest punishment.

Niyatiben, we will always remain grateful to you for your selfless support and intervention.

The soul of the deceased girl will be contented to know that the people who don't know her helped her get the justice.

16 વર્ષની વહાલી દીકરી પર સામૂહીક બળાત્કાર થાય ને બળાત્કાર કરનાર નરાધમો બળાત્કાર કર્યા પછી દીકરીને મારી નાખે... આ ઘટના સાંભળીને અરેરાટી થઈ ગયેલી. 

બળાત્કારીઓની ઘરપકડમાં ઢીલ થઈ રહી હતી. એસપીનું ધ્યાન દોર્યા પછી એ જેલમાં ધકેલાયા.

વિકૃત મગજવાળા બળાત્કારીઓને કોર્ટ જામીન આપે એ કેમ સાંખી લેવાય. 

'બેન મારી દીકરીને ન્યાય મળે એમ કરો..' એવું દીકરીના પિતાએ વિનંતી સાથે કહ્યું. 

આરોપીઓએ હાઈકોર્ટમાં જામીન માટે અરજી કરેલી. હાઈકોર્ટમાં લડવા ઢગલો રૃપિયા જોઈએ એ આ ગરીબ પરિવાર પાસે ક્યાં હતા?

નિયતી ભટ્ટ - અમારા મિત્ર જેઓ હાઈકોર્ટમાં પ્રેકટીસ કરે. તેઓ હંમેશાં હું કાંઈ મદદ કરી શકુ તો કહેજો એમ કહે. એટલે આ કેસમાં મદદ કરવા એમને વિનંતી કરી. અગાઉના વિચરતી જાતિના એક કેસમાં પણ તેઓ મદદ કરી રહ્યા છે. આ કેસની વાત સાંભળતા તેમણે મદદ માટે તુરત જ તૈયારી દર્શાવી ને કેસ ફાઈલ પણ થયો.

જ્યોત્સના બેન પણ રાજી. જ્યોત્સના બહેન તો આરોપીને કડક સજા થાય તે માટે નીચલી કોર્ટમાં મહેનત કરી જ રહ્યા છે. આમાં નિયતીબેનનું પીઠબળ ભળ્યું. લડાકુ જ્યોત્સનાની નિસ્વાર્થ મદદ માટે આભાર..

જામીન કેન્સલ થવાની ઘટના રાવળ સમાજના સાવ ગરીબ માણસ માટે નાની સુની નહોતી. ગામમાં તેઓ જેમની સામે પડ્યા છે એ માણસો ઘણા વગદાર છે.. પણ દીકરીના પિતાને પોતાની દીકરીને ન્યાય અપાવવો છે. હજુ કેસ ચાલવાનું થશે પણ જામીન નિયતીબહેનના લીધે નામંજુર થયા એ વાતથી જ તેઓ ઘણા રાજી થયા.

Kadi Sarv Vidyalaya organized Sarv Netrutva- Leadership Training programme for the students studying in the Vidyalaya. 

Various speakers are invited in this programme in order to develop leadership skills in youth as well as to strengthen the desire to work for the deprived.  

I am have been going to talk to students like this since last two years. 

Students visited the organization after I talked this time.They asked a lot of questions and asked how can they help.  

If every one of us will help the deprived, nobody will be left deprived in this world...

યુવાનોમાં લીડરશીપના ગુણ વિકસે સાથે સાથે સમાજના છેવાડના માણસો માટે કામ કરવાની ભાવના પણ પ્રબળ થાય તે માટે વિવિધ વક્તાઓને પણ કાર્યક્રમમાં બોલાવવામાં આવે. 

છેલ્લા બે વર્ષથી કાર્યક્રમમાં વિદ્યાર્થીઓની વચમાં વાત કરવા જવાનું થાય છે.

આ વખતે વાત કર્યા પછી વિદ્યાર્થીઓ અમારી સંસ્થાની મુલાકાતે પણ આવ્યા. ઢગલો પ્રશ્નો પુછયાને અમે શું મદદ કરીએ તેવુંયે તેમણે પુછ્યું... વંચિતોના હાથ પકવાનું આપણે સૌ કરીશું તો દુનિયામાં તકવંચિત કોઈ રહેશે જ નહીં.. 

આ યુવાનો પણ આવતીકાલના એવા જાગૃત લીડર બને તેવી શુભેચ્છાઓ...

As soon as we say that we are coming to the Devipoojak settlement today, Kadviakaki asks what will we eat. I like Bajri Rotla and Olo (meshed spiced brinjal), then she makes it with affection. 

Sometimes she packs it and sends when she comes to know that Bhalabhai or Karshankaka is coming to the office. 

When we went to the settlement a few days back, Bhalabhai’s wife asked, “Ben, do you know how to make rotlas?”

I have not made many rotla but at some point I had. But I tried and the rotla was made the way it is seen in the photo.  

When we started working in this settlement, nobody was even asking for water. I used to wonder why they are not even offering water. But then I came to know that the society keeps untouchability from them. They think that you also definitely won’t drink the water. So, they only don’t even offer. But then I started asking for water and telling them I will come to eat at their place to these families living in scarcity.

With having these meals, the thin line also disappeared, they stopped getting scared of me and I became one of them.  

These days, when it is four in the evening and I don’t find food, I go to the settlement and tell them to make a rotla and tea. And I eat it with due ownership.

We will look better if we start drinking water without asking caste and creed.

કડવીકાકી દેવીપૂજક વસાહતમાં આજે આવીશું એવું કહીએ કે તુરત શું ખાશો એવો પ્રશ્ન પુછે. બાજરીનો રોટલો ને ઓળો મને ભાવે તો એ ભાવથી બનાવી આપે. ક્યારેક તો ભલાભાઈ કે કરશનકાકા ઓફીસ આવવાના છે એવી ખબર પડે તો ભાથુ બાંધીને મોકલાવે.

થોડા દિવસ પહેલાં વસાહતમાં ગયા ને જમવા બેસતા પહેલાં ભલાભાઈની વહુએ પુછ્યું, તે હે બેન તમને રોટલા ઘડતા આવડે?

બહુ ઘડ્યા નથી પણ જેવા તેવા ક્ડેયારેક ઘડેલા ખરા. પણ લાવો હું પ્રયત્ન કરુ ને ફોટોમાં દેખાય છે એવો રોટલો ઘડાયો.

કામ શરૃ કર્યું તે વખતના દિવસોમાં વાસહતના કોઈ પીવાનું પાણી પણ ના આપે. મને નવાઈ લાગતી કેમ કોઈ પાણીનુંયે પુછતુ નથી પણ પછી ખબર પડી કે લોકો, સમાજ એમનાથી આભડછેટ રાખે છે એટલે તમે પાણી નહીં જ પીવો એમ માનીને એ લોકો નહોતા પુછતા પણ પછી સામેથી પાણી ને અછતમાં જીવતા આ પરિવારોને હું તમારા ત્યાં જમીશ એવું કહેવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.

ને આ જમણથી અમારી વચ્ચે જે થોડી ઘણી ભેદ રેખા હતી, મને એમનામાં ભેળવતા એ લોકો ડરતા એ બધુએ મટી ગયું ને હું એમનામાંની એક થઈ ગઈ.

આજે તો કામમાં ક્યારેક ચાર વાગી જાયને જમવાનું ના જડે તો વસાહતમાં જઈને જરા રોટલો ઘડી દો ને થોડી ચા બનાવી દો એમ કહીને અધિકારભાવથી ચા રોટલો ખાઈ લઉં છું. 

જાતપાત પુછ્યા વગર દરેકના ઘરે પાણી પીતા થઈશું તો વધુ રૃડા લાગશું...

Mehul is Alive and Kicking with the help of you all Good Samaritans!

I think you all remember Mehul, you are the reason he is alive today.

Honestly, when Mehul’s father Preshbhai first came to meet us and showed us the pictures of ailing Mehul, little did I hope that he would be able to make it out of woods. However, at the same time, I also had faith of witnessing light at the end of the tunnel with the immensely courageous and determined Pareshbhai. He left no stone un-turned to save his critically ill son. But then, he did hope for the miracle.

The amount for Mehul’s medical expenses was quoted at a whooping Rs. 10 lacs by the doctors treating him. It was practically impossible for us to mobilise such handsome amount, neither individually nor organisationally.  

My appeal requesting my friends and followers on Facebook to support the medical expenses for Mehul found overwhelming response. It went on to prove how truly blessed I am to have such huge number of  friends indeed. You all went ahead to contribute Rs. 5 lac.  Stirred by such unprecedented support from unknown Samaritans, the Oad community came further and contributed generously towards Mehul’s treatment. Alumni Association of Grambharati also helped Pareshbhai and eventually Rs. 10 lac were gathered. Ultimately  after 5 major surgeries,  Mehul is alive, well  and kicking as you can see in the photograph.  

A mother undergoes a lot of pain while giving birth to a baby. But when she takes it in her hand, all the pain goes away. I felt the same after seeing Mehul today. I had tears of joy. 

Mehul and his very brave wife Sejal were in the office today to see us all. ‘If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be here today!!’ Mehul shared.  My eyes teared up seeing him well and smiling. There was a sense of relief much similar of holding a child in hand after enduring the pain of child birth.

Well, we have only been instrumental here, every time Pareshbhai would call up to update us on Mehul’s health I always told him, ‘Let Mehul know he has to get well soon, he will get well because  thousands are praying for him! Show him my post on Facebook, read him the wishes people have sent in for him.’  

Thankfully all our prayers were heard and Mehul is doing good although,  his stomach does look like a tethered cloth.

‘So, is all well inside?’ I inquired.

He smiled and replied, ‘No trouble at all!’

A rather skinny looking  Mehul at a mere 55-60 kilos weighed a massive 115 kilos before his illness. ‘Let’s not plan to lose weight in such a manner!!’ I joked.

Thank you for choosing to support Mehul’s medical expenses. Trust me, if all of you  had not pitched-in Mehul wouldn’t be amidst us today. I am grateful to have these opportunities of being  instrumental in such deeds and to be surrounded by compassionate and caring friends like you all.

મેહુલ તમને યાદ છે...

તમે સૌએ જ મદદ કરીને એને જીવન બક્ષેલું.

સાચુ કહુ તો મેહુલના પિતા પરેશભાઈ પહેલીવાર મળવા આવ્યા અને મેહુલની હાલતનો ફોટો બતાવ્યો ત્યારે એક વખત માટે તો મેહુલ સાજો નહીં થઈ શકે તેવું લાગેલું પણ પછી મરણપથારીએ પડેલા દીકરાને બચાવવા મથી રહેલા પરેશભાઈની હિંમતને જોઈને ચમત્કાર થશે તેવું લાગેલું.

દસ લાખનો ખર્ચ ડોક્ટરે કહેલો તે આટલા પૈસા ક્યાંથી લાવવા. વ્યકિતગત કે સંસ્થાગત રીતે આટલી મોટી રકમની મદદ કરવાની ક્ષમતા અમારી નહીં.

ફેસબુક પર મિત્રો ઘણા. આ મિત્રો ખાલી વાહ વાહ જ કરે છે કે વખત આવે ટેકો એની કસોટી મેહુલના કિસ્સામાં કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું ને દોસ્તો તમે સૌ સાચે જ મિત્રો અને એય પાછા સોના જેવા સાબિત થયા. પાંચ લાખ આપણે સૌએ મળીને ભેગા કર્યા. આપણે મેહુલની ચિંતા કરીએ છીએ એ જાણીને ઓડ સમાજે અને ગ્રામભારતીના ભૂતપૂર્વ વિદ્યાર્થી મંડળે પણ પરેશભાઈને મદદ કરીને એમ કરતા કરતા દસ લાખ થઈ ગયા ને પાંચ ઓપરેશન પછી મેહુલ ફોટોમાં દેખાય છે એવો થઈ ગયો.

મા બાળકને જન્મ આપતા પહેલાં કેટલી પીડા વેઠે છે. પણ બાળકના જન્મ પછી એને હરખથી પોતાના ખોળામાં લે ને જાણે બધુ દુઃખ દુર. આજે મહુલને જોઈને આવી જ લાગણી થઈ. હરખથી આંખો ભરાઈ આવી. 

મેહુલની પત્ની સેજલ જબરી હિંમતવાળી. આજે બંને ઓફીસ પર આભાર વ્યકત કરવા આવ્યા હતા. તમે ન હોત તો ના બચી શકાયુ હોત તેવું મેહુલે કહ્યું.

ખેર અમે તો માધ્યમ બન્યા પણ મેહુલની તબીયતના સમાચાર પરેશભાઈ ફોન પર આપતા ત્યારે હંમેશાં કહેતી કે, ‘મેહુલને કહેજો કે એને સાજા થવાનું છે. હજારો માણસોએ એના માટે પ્રાર્થના કરી છે તે એને કશુંએ થવાનું નથી. તમે એના માટે લખેલી પોસ્ટ પર આવેલી કમેન્ટ એને વંચાવજો.’

અને ખરેજ આપણે સૌએ કરેલી દુવા અને કરેલી મદદ કામ લાગી.. મેહુલનું પેટ ફાટેલા કપડું જેમ સીવાય એમ સીવેલું દેખાય છે. 

મે પુછ્યુ અંદર સબ સલામત? એણે હસીનું કહ્યું, હા હવે કોઈ તકલીફ નથી. 

બિમારી પહેલાં 115 કી.ગ્રા. વજન હતું હાલ 55 -60 જેટલું થઈ ગયું. તેના વજનને લઈને જરા રમૂજ કરી ‘દોસ્ત હવે વજન ઉતારવા આવા મોંધા ખર્ચા ના કરાવતો.’ 

તમે સૌ સાથે ના આવ્યા હોત તો મેહુલને આવો સાજો નરવો ના જોઈ શકત..

સારા કાર્યોમાં નિમિત્ત બનાવ્યા ને તમારા જેવા મિત્રો જેઓ મદદ માટે હંમેશાં સાથે ઊભા રહે છે તેવા આપવા માટે કુદરતો આભાર માનુ છું.

Solar Light Distribution took place at Nomadic Settlerment of Rajkot with the Help of Sparsh

To eat before sunset is good for health. Jains call it Choviyar. 

Nomadic communities eat before sunset, not because of health reasons but when the sun goes down and takes his light along, the darkness prevails everywhere. How to cook without light in the dark? Those who have access to electricity can cook at 10 at night. But where kerosene is not affordable then, we have to cook and dine before darkness. 

The daily wager women come before their day work is over just for cooking, promising to complete the work next day. 

The nomadic settlement is either near the jungle area or in deserted land. In the night, there are poisonous insects wondering in the shanties and often bite them, but what can be done?  

Only the wearer can know where the shoe pinches- only these families know the dark side without light.

The demand for light connection under the different government schemes have been applied but what till then? Sparsh has initiated to become instrumental in lighting the little homes of these families and FunSolar also helped in this cause. 

Shri Maharshibhai came and with his help till date in Amreli and Rajkot total 700 solar lights have been distributed.

અંધારુ થાય એ પહેલાં જમી લેવાનું તબીયત માટે સારુ. જૈનો એને ચોવિયાર કહે.

વિચરતી જાતિઓ પણ અંધારા પહેલાં જમી લે. તબીયતની ચિંતાને લઈને નહીં પણ સૂરજદાદા પોતાનો પ્રકાશ સંકેલી ઘરે જતા રહે પછી ફેલાતા અંધકારમાં દિવા વગર રાંધવું કેમ? જેમના ઘરે વિજળી છે એ તો રાતના દસ વાગેય જમવાનું બનાવે પણ અમારે તો ઘાસતેલના વાંધા છે એટલે અંધારા પહેલાં રાંધવાનું ને જમવાનું.

કામ પર ગયેલી બહેનો કામ પુરુ ના થયું હોય તો કાલે કરી જઈશું એમ કહીને ખાલી રાંધવા માટે થઈ ઘરે વહેલી આવી જાય.. 

જંગલમાં કે અવાવરુ જગ્યાની પાસે છાપરાં હોય તે રાતના ઝેરી જીવજંતુઓ તો ઘરમાં ફરતા હોય ઘણીવાર કરડીયે જાય પણ શું કરે...

આવી સ્થિતિમાં જીવતા પરિવારોને ઘરમાં અજવાળુ ના હોવું એટલે શું એની વધુ ખબર પડે..

સરકાર લાઈટ આપે એ માટે અરજીઓ આપી છે. પણ એ ના આપે ત્યાં સુધી શું? સ્પર્શે આવા પરિવારોના ઘરમાં અજવાળુ પાથરવામાં નિમિત્ત બનવાનું સ્વીકાર્યું ને ફનસોલારે પણ મદદ કરી. 

મહર્ષીભાઈ આવ્યા ને એમની સાથે અમરેલી રાજકોટમાં મળીને અત્યાર સુધી કુલ 700 સોલાર લાઈટનું વિતરણ થયું.
