57 women from various nomadic communities staying in Ahmedabad’s Vatva, Bhaktinagar, Shahwadi,  recently  took tailoring training. The training was conducted with the support of ATIRA and Sadvichar Pariwar. During the training that was spread over a month these women learnt to stitch salwar-kameez and saree blouse. After the training they expressed their desire to acquire loan to buy a sewing machine so that they can do job work from home. 

VSSM inquired about the possibilities of getting job-work at home for these women but after meeting up with few companies  we found that the companies  prefer giving job to women who are trained in industrial tailoring because of the amount of work they are able to deliver in stipulated period of time. As we researched more it was found that ‘Calorax Foundation’ based in Maninagar provides industrial training to women. Our trainees made a visit to this institute too. 22 women had expressed their desire to acquire industrial training but took a step back since the distance was too long and expensive for them to commute every day. We have spoke to ‘Calorax Foundation’ about it and they have agreed to work out some way. Once they hone the necessary skills VSSM will support them financially to procure a sewing machine.

અમદાવાદના વટવા, ભાવિકનગર, શાહવાડી નદીના પટમાં રહેતી વિચરતા સમુદાયની ૫૮ બહેનોએ vssm, ‘અટીરા’ અને ‘સદવિચાર પરિવાર’ની મદદથી સીલાઈની તાલીમ લીધી. જુદા જુદા સ્થળોએ ચાલેલી એક મહિનાની તાલીમમાં બહેનો, ડ્રેસ અને બ્લાઉઝની સિલાઈ શીખી ગયા. તાલીમ પછી કેટલીક બહેનોએ જોબવર્ક મળે એ માટે વાત કરી અને તે માટે મશીન ખરીદવા લોન આપવા બાબતે પણ વાત કરી. 

જોબવર્ક માટે આપણે કેટલાક લોકો સાથે વાત કરી. મોટાભાગે જે કંપની જોબવર્ક આપે છે એ કંપની ઇન્ડસ્ટ્રીયલ ટેલરીંગની તાલીમ લીધેલા બહેનોને કામ આપવાનું વધારે પસંદ કરે છે કારણ કે, એમાં ઝડપ વધારે છે. મણિનગરમાં ‘કેલોરેક્ષ ફાઉન્ડેશન’ દ્વારા બહેનોને ઇન્ડસ્ટ્રીયલ ટેલરીંગની તાલીમ આપવામાં આવે છે આપણી બહેનો ત્યાં મુલાકાતે જઈ આવી. ૨૨ બહેનોએ ઇન્ડસ્ટ્રીયલ ટેલરીંગની તાલીમ લેવાની વાત કરી પણ એમના ઘરથી તાલીમ સ્થળ ઘણું દુર છે અને એનું ભાડું એમને પોસાય તેમ નથી. આ બાબતે ‘કેલોરેક્ષ ફાઉન્ડેશન’ સાથે વાત કરતાં તેમણે મદદરૂપ થવાની ખાત્રી આપી છે હવે આ બહેનોની ઝડપથી તાલીમ શરુ થશે અને જે બહેનોને સીલાઈ મશીનની જરૂર છે એમને મશીન ખરીદવા આપણે લોન પણ આપીશું.

Life and its many hues…..

Babubhai Vasfoda led a perfect life, he had everything he had asked for. It was a life seldom imagined by anybody from nomadic communities. Inspite of being a from a nomadic community  Babubhai  never took up the traditional trade of making baskets of bamboo instead he worked at the ticket counter at a local cinema in Diyodar. A loving and hardworking wife, two daughters and two sons made his family complete. With the money earned from the job he purchased some land and built a small house on it.  But such good times did not last long. His wife fell ill with cancer. A lot of money including his savings were spent on her treatment. But it was not enough to save her life. After the wife his two daughters and one son passed away too. It was extremely difficult to bear so much of pain.  Babubhai suffered a stroke and remained bedridden for long. The house that was built with so much of love and aspirations began crumbling down. he had to make  small hut next to the house. His son had to move to Kutchh to earn living. Babubhai had to take care of himself. He gathered strength to start walking again but work to earn was impossible. He was left with no option but to take up begging to survive. He never complained but accepted and silently endured his fate.

VSSM’s team member Naranbhai happened to meet Babukaka near  government office at Diyodar. It is the place where Bahukaka begs. Naranbhai did what he always does, he began talking to Babukaka, asked why he was begging and got to know his details . He probed a bit further to find his name in the BPL list. It was possible to get housing support for Babukaka. Naranbhai spoke to the TDO  and made an application for housing support. Time passed but nothing moved so case was presented at the panchayat  as well as Collector’s office. Atlast the application has been approved under the Indira Was Yojna. He has also received first cheque.

‘Naranbhai, I have no one else to rely on, you will have to construct my house, you are my son here since my son is away …….’ such faith Babukaka has put in Naranbhai.

કિસ્મતનો ખેલ

દિયોદરમાં બાબુભાઈ વાંસફોડા તેમના પરિવાર સાથે સ્થાઈ રહે. પરિવારમાં બે દીકરી અને બે દીકરા. બાબુભાઈએ જિંદગીમાં ક્યારેય વાંસનું કામ કર્યું નહિ પણ પોતાની આવડતથી એ દિયોદરમાં આવેલી એક ટોકીઝમાં ટીકીટ વિતરણનું કામ કરે. પોતાની મહેનતથી જમીન ખરીદી,અને નાનું ઘર બાંધ્યું. પણ આ સુખી પરિવારને કોણ જાણે કોની નજર લાગી. બાબુભાઈની પત્નીને કેન્સર થયું અને તેમાં એ આર્થિક રીતે ઘસાઈ ગયા. તેમની પત્ની મૃત્યુ પામી એની પાછળ બે દીકરી અને એક દીકરો પણ.. આટલું બધું સહન કેવી રીતે થાય? એમને લકવા પડી ગયો. શરૂઆતમાં તો ખાટલામાં જ પડ્યા રહેવું પડે પણ પછી ધીરે ધીરે લંગડાતા ચાલવાનું શરુ કર્યું, એક હાથ કામ કરતો બંધ થઇ ગયો હતો. એક દીકરો જે મોટો થયા પછી કામ માટે કચ્છમાં જઈને રહ્યો. દિયોદરમાં બાબુકાકા એકલાં જ રહ્યાં. મજૂરી શક્ય નહોતી એટલે એ ભીખ માંગીને જીવન જાણે પૂરું કરતા હોય એમ જીવે.. જે મકાન ખુબ પ્રેમથી બનાવ્યું હતું એ જર્જરિત થઇ ગયું. ઝાપરું કરીને રહેવાનો વારો આવ્યો.. પણ કોઈની સામે કોઈ ફરિયાદ નહિ... આ બધું થવાનું લખ્યું હશે એટલે થાય છે એવી ગ્લાની સાથે જીવે..

vssm ના કાર્યકર નારણ સરકારી કચેરીમાં વિચરતી જાતિના કામો માટે ગયા હતાં બાબુકાકા ત્યાં ભીખ માંગવા આવ્યા. ટેવ મુજબ બાબુકાકાની વિગતો જાણી. એમના ઘરે ગયા. BPL યાદીમાં એમનું નામ હતું. એટલે એમને મકાન સહાય મળે એમ હતું. નારણભાઈએ TDO શ્રી સમક્ષ આ બાબતે વાત કરી અને મકાન સહાય માટે અરજી પણ કરી. સમય ગયો પણ કંઈ ના થતા કલેકટર થી લઈને ગ્રામપંચાયતમાં રજૂઆત કરી. આખરે એમની મકાન સહાય મંજૂર થઇ. ઇન્દિરા આવાસ યોજનામાં તેમનું મકાન બંધાશે. એમને પહેલો ચેક મળી ગયો. નારણભાઈ ને બાબુકાકા કહે છે, ‘નારણભાઈ તમારે જ મારું ઘર બનાવી આપવાનું, મારો દીકરો અહી નથી તમે મારા દીકરા જેવા છો.’

Owning a home is everyones dream but no one desires and values it more than communities who have never lived in a proper shelter.  The funds under the government’s Pandit Dindayal Scheme facilitates construction of homes for the nomadic communities. However, Rs. 45,000 that these families get under this scheme  is not enough for construction of a house however minimalist it is!!  VSSM has been advocating to  the government to increase the amount under this particular scheme. On 14th August 2014 the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment through resolution number 122013/87307/H has increased the amount to Rs. 70,000. These increase in amount will to an extent ease out the construction process. 

The picture in the story has Pasabhai Saraniya with the home constructed by the funds under this particular scheme, while Rs. 45,000 came from the government,  Rs. 45,000 was from the support made by Shri. Vallabhbhai Savani and the balance  Rs. 15,000 is contributed by Pasabhai himself. We are deeply grateful to the government as  many like Pasabhai will hugely benefit from this move of the government for which we are deeply grateful….

આનંદો આનંદો..અને હ્રદયપૂર્વક આભાર...

ઘર વિહોણી વિચરતી અને વિકસતી જાતિઓને ‘પંડિત દીનદયાળ આવાસ યોજના’ અંતર્ગત ઘર બાંધવા માટે મકાન સહાય રૂપે રૂ. ૪૫,૦૦૦ આપવામાં આવતા હતાં. આ રકમમાંથી ઘર કેવી રીતે પૂરું થાય! સરકારમાં આ બાબતે વખતો વખત કરેલી રજૂઆત અને સરકારના ધ્યાને પણ આ મુદ્દો હોવાના કારણે તા. ૧૪/૦૮/૨૦૧૪ના રોજ ‘સામાજિક ન્યાય અને અધિકારીતા વિભાગ’ના ઠરાવ ક્રમાંક –હ્સલ/૧૨૨૦૧૩/૮૭૩૦૭૫/હ થી આ રકમ વધારીને રૂ. ૭૦,૦૦૦ કરવામાં આવી જે માટે સમગ્ર વિચરતી જાતિ વતી vssm સરકારની આભારી છે. હવે આ પરિવારો માટે પોતાનું ઘર બાંધવાનું થોડું સરળ થઇ જશે.

ફોટોમાં ડીસામાં રહેતા પસાભાઇ સરાણીયાનો પરિવાર પહેલાં જે પરિસ્થિતિમાં રહેતા હતા તે અને સરકાર દ્વારા રૂ.૪૫,૦૦૦ ની મકાન સહાય અને vssm ના માધ્યમથી સુરત સ્થિત આદરણીય શ્રી વલ્લભભાઈ દ્વારા આપવામાં આવેલા રૂ.૪૫,૦૦૦ અને પસાભાઈએ પોતે રૂ.૧૫,૦૦૦ આપીને રૂ.૧,૦૫,૦૦૦માં બનેલા પોતાના ઘર સાથે...  હવે પસાભાઇ જેવા કેટલાય વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારો માટે ઘર બનાવવું સહેલું બની જશે.. આનંદો આનંદો..અને હ્રદયપૂર્વક આભાર...

The long wait to settle down…...

Bhojpara village of Morbi’s Vakaner block is home to around 51 Gadaliya families. The traditional occupation of this community is that of making iron tools but since the demand for these equipments have reduced the community has began trading Ayurvedic products like harde, ashwagandha, murli et. after procuring them from the woods. These products  are brought from them by ayurvedic and other provision  store owners. 

VSSM got in touch with these families almost a year ago. The scenario with them was the same as with others when we first come in their contact. None of the children were attending school and the parents of least bothered of this fact.When these families foot to know about the activities of VSSM in the region they approached us and requested a school for their children. VSSM initiated a Bridge School in the settlement but the continuity was difficult to maintain as parents would migrate with the children. After a lot of persuasion we have reached a state where 80% of children stay back. Most of the times the mothers stay back while the fathers travel to sell there products. They come back to settlement every 15-20 days. 

Reenaben, a VSSM baldost is in charge of the school at the settlement. Recently, consequent to the requests by VSSM,  the government has initiated a school for these children. 

In the olden days these families wandered from village-to-village with the goods loaded on their donkeys. But now 4-5 families together purchase an old, rickety matador to travel with their products. Amongst  the adversities they  face one is harassment from the police who ask for license of trade. Some have  started to work in factories nearby. Most of them are looking forward to settling down, the applications for residential plots have been made but as it happens with  government processes things have hardly moved. Until then we can just wait and wonder when will their wandering come to a halt…..

કોણ જાણે એમના પગને ક્યારે વિશ્રામ મળશે?

મોરબી જીલ્લાના વાંકાનેરના ભોજપરાગામમાં ૫૧ ગાડલિયા પરિવારો છેલ્લા કેટલાય વખતથી રહે છે.  ગાડલિયા પરિવારોનો મૂળ વ્યવસાય લોખંડમાંથી વિવિધ ઓજારો બનાવવાનો પણ ભોજપરામાં રહેતા આ પરિવારોએ છેલ્લા ઘણા વખતથી આ કામ બંધ કરી દેશી જડીબુટ્ટી જેવી કે, હરડે, અશ્વગંધા, સફેદ મુસળી વગેરે જંગલમાંથી લાવીને ગામેગામ ફરીને વેચવાનું શરુ કર્યું. એમની જડીબુટ્ટી આયુર્વેદિક સ્ટોર અને ગાંધીની દુકાનમાં પણ ખરીદવામાં આવે છે. 

ભોજપરામાં રહેતા પરિવારોના સંપર્કમાં આજથી ૧ વર્ષ પહેલા આવવાનું થયું. આખી વસાહતમાંથી એક પણ બાળક શાળાએ જાય નહિ અને વસાહતમાંથી કોઈને એની ચિંતા પણ નહી. આ વિસ્તારમાં vssm દ્વારા ચાલતી વૈકલ્પિક શાળા અને એના માધ્યમથી થતા કામો અંગે ગાડલિયા પરિવારોને ખ્યાલ આવ્યો અને એમણે પોતાના બાળકોને ભણાવવાની ઈચ્છા વ્યક્ત કરી. શરૂઆતમાં એકાદ મહિનો બાળકો સાથે વાલીઓ રહ્યા પણ મહિના પછી મોટાભાગના વાલીઓ બાળકોને લઈને દવા વેચવા જતા રહ્યા. ઘણી સમજાવટના અંતે હવે ૮૦ % પરિવારો પોતાના બાળકોને વસાહતમાં મુકીને જવા માંડ્યા છે. બાળકોને સાચવવા બહેનો ઘરે રહે છે. ભાઈઓ કામ ધંધા માટે આસપાસના વિસ્તારમાં ૧૫-૨૦ દિવસ માટે જાય વળી પાછા વસાહતમાં આવીને રહે.. આ બાળકોને vssmના બાલદોસ્ત રીનાબેન ભણાવે છે. તાજેતરમાં સરકારે પણ આ બાળકોને ભણાવવાની વ્યવસ્થા vssm ની રજૂઆતને ધ્યાને લઈને કરી છે. 

આ પરિવારો પહેલાં ગધેડાં પર સામન લઈને ગામે ગામ ફરતાં. હવે તેઓ મેટાડોર કે એ પ્રકારની ગાડી મૂળ તો ભંગાર અવસ્થાવાળી પાંચ પરિવારો ભેગા થઈને ખરીદે અને એને લઈને ગામે ગામ ફરે છે. હવે કુટુંબ કબીલા સાથે ફરવાનું પણ બંધ થઇ રહ્યું છે. પોલીસ એમને રંજાડે પણ છે, એમની પાસે જડીબુટ્ટી વેચવા માટેનું લાયસન્સ માંગવામાં આવે છે. આમ હવે આ પરિવારો પણ થાક્યા છે. કેટલાક વ્યક્તિઓએ મોરબી આસપાસ ફેકટરીમાં પણ કામ શરુ કર્યું છે. હવે એમની ઈચ્છા સ્થાઈ વસવાટની છે. એમણે પ્લોટની માંગણી કરતી અરજી કરી દીધી છે પણ હજુ સુધી એને લઈને કોઈ કાર્યવાહી થઇ નથી. કોણ જાણે એમના પગને વિશ્રામ મળવામાં હજુ કેટલી વાર લાગવાની છે?

We dream of a different future for our kids……

Now that a lot of nomadic families are opting to lead settled lives the nature of their needs are also changing. Access to  schools and hostels are becoming need of the day. This year with the support of Aarti Foundation a hostel for children of nomadic communities was initiated in Patan’s Radhanpur. Initially 40 children were enrolled in this hostel but since most of them could not get admission in the schools of Radhanpur only 18 children are staying in the hostel at the moment. 

The unique part of the hostel is  community taking responsibility of mobilising funds and contributing towards expences of running the hostel.  So far they have  mobilised/collected  20% of the total cost. Apart from the financials the responsibility of tutoring  the kids is  borne by Somabhai Bajaniya  a teacher from nomadic community. From 8 to 10 every night he tutors kids in the hostel. Through the day  Ishwarbhai Bajaniya  remains the chief care taker of the kids in the hostel. VSSM team member Mohanbhai visits the hostel twice a week, understands the needs if any and  addresses the logistical issues.  For now the hostel is functioning like a well oiled machine. 

50 applications from the children for the academic year of 2015-16 have been received in this year itself and Mohanbhai, Iswarbhai and Somabhai have worked out  a strategy to ensure each child willing to join the hostel and study further should get admission in the schools at Radhanpur. 

On 26th August we planned a visit to the hostel along with Shri Lalbhai Rambhiya, Director- Aarti Foundation. As the news of our visit spread the community leaders reached the hostel early morning. ‘We have only one expectation, that our children study all the way, they get good jobs. We have wandered from village to village but we do not want our children to inherit such wandering,’ said the community members unanimously. The thanked us for the hostel facility and respected Shri Lalbhai promised to be there for the better tomorrow of these  children.

અમારા બાળકોને વારસામાં રઝળપાટ નથી આપવો... 

પાટણ જીલ્લાના રાધનપુરમાં vssm દ્વારા આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશનની મદદથી વિચરતી જાતિના બાળકોની હોસ્ટેલ જુન ૧૪માં શરુ કરવામાં આવી જેમાં ૧૮ બાળકો ભણે છે. મૂળ તો બાળકોની સંખ્યા ૪૦ ઉપરાંત થઇ પણ બાળકોને  રાધનપુરની શાળાઓમાં પ્રવેશ મળ્યો નહિ એટલે એમને હોસ્ટેલમાં દાખલ કરવાનું થયું નહી. વિચરતી જાતિના જે પરિવારો સ્થાઈ થઈને ગામોમાં રહેવા લાગ્યા છે અથવા જેના માતા-પિતાને કામ ધંધા માટે બહાર જવું પડે અને  બાળકોને ભણાવવાની ઈચ્છા છે એવા પરિવારોએ પોતાના વિસ્તારમાં હોસ્ટેલ શરુ કરવા માંગ કરી જેની ફલશ્રુતિ રૂપે આ હોસ્ટેલ શરુ થઇ. આ હોસ્ટેલની સંપૂર્ણ જવાબદારી વિચરતી જાતિના આ વિસ્તારના આગેવાનોએ ઉપાડી છે એ ત્યાં સુધી કે ‘બાળકોના કુલ ખર્ચની ૨૦% રકમ અમે એકત્રિત કરીશું એવી લાગણી સાથે’ અને એ રકમ એકત્રિત થઇ પણ ગઈ. સાથે સાથે બાળકોને school પછીના સમયમાં ભણાવવાની જવાબદારી પણ વિચરતી જાતીમાંના જ બજાણીયા સમાજના બે શિક્ષકોમાંના એક સોમાભાઈ બજાણિયાએ પોતાના શિરે ઉપાડી અને રોજ સાંજે ૮ થી ૧૦ વાગ્યા સુધી તે હોસ્ટેલ પર આવે અને બાળકોને ભણાવે.. બાકીના સમયમાં બજાણીયા સમાજના યુવાન ઈશ્વરભાઈ બાળકોને સંભાળે. જયારે vssmના કાર્યકર અને વિચરતી જાતિના જ મોહનભાઈ અઠવાડિયામાં  બે વખત આ બાળકોને મળે અને એમની જરૂરિયાત તકલીફ જાણી તેનું સમાધાન શોધી તેનું નિરાકરણ લાવે..આમ ખુબ સુંદર વ્યવસ્થા સમુદાયના આગેવાનોએ પોતાની રીતે ગોઠવી છે.

વર્ષ 2015 માટે અત્યારથી ૫૦ બાળકોના નામ આવી ગયા છે આ વખતની જેમ આ બાળકોને પરત ના જવું પડે એ માટે સોમાભાઈ, મોહનભાઈ અને ઈશ્વરભાઈએ આગામી માર્ચ, એપ્રિલમાં જ રાધનપુરની શાળાઓમાં આ બાળકોની વ્યવસ્થા ગોઠવાય એમ કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું છે. 

તા.૨૬/૦૮/૧૪ ના રોજ આ બાળકોને મળવા ‘આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશન’ના ડાયરેક્ટર શ્રી લાલભાઈ રાંભિયા સાથે જવાનું થયું. અમે હોસ્ટેલમાં આવવાના છીએ એ સમાચાર મળતાં જ ૨૬મીએ અમે પહોચીએ એ પહેલાં વિચરતી જાતિના આગેવાનો પહોચી ગયા. જયારે અમે ત્યાં પહોચ્યાં ત્યારે આ બધા આગેવાનોએ આભાર વ્યક્ત કર્યો અને કહ્યું, ‘અમારી એક જ અપેક્ષા છે કે, ‘અમારા બાળકો ખુબ ભણે.. સારી જગ્યાએ એમને કામ મળે.. અમે ગામે ગામ રઝળીયે છીએ. પણ અમારા બાળકોને વારસામાં રઝળપાટ નથી આપવો.’ અમારા આદરણીય લાલભાઈએ આ સાંભળી આ પરિવારોને બાળકોના ભવિષ્ય માટે હમેશાં સાથે હોવાની ખાત્રી આપી. આ બાળકોના શિક્ષણમાં મદદરૂપ થતા અમારા આત્મીય અને પ્રિય સ્વજન જેઓ સતત અમારી સાથે છે એવા ચંદ્રકાન્તભાઈ ગોગરી(સંસ્થાપક આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશન)નો vssm અને વિચરતી જાતિ વતી આભાર વ્યક્ત કરું છું. ચન્દ્રકાંતભાઈ અમારા એવા સ્વજન છે જેઓ હમેશાં કહે છે કે, ‘કોઈ નથી ત્યાં હું છું’ તેમની આ લાગણી અમને હિમ્મત આપે છે... અને આ કામ કરતાં રહેવાની પ્રેરણા પણ..
