 ‘How can a mother be so heartless?’ I had thought when our team member Vinodbhai had shared an incident from Chotaudaipur’s Lunja village.

Three kids whose father had died, mother looked after them for a while before she left them to marry someone else. The responsibility of these children fell upon their Kaka-kaki ( paternal uncle-auntie) who already had 2 children of their own. Yet the couple decided to care for these children. The couple laboured hard to provide for all 5 children. Life continued and suddenly we were all reeling under the deadly second wave of the pandemic.  Kaka had a fever and cough, Ritaben (Kaki) assumed he will soon be alright, also there was no money to seek medical help. The issue continued for few days before Kaka passed on.

The responsibility of raising five kids fell on Ritaben. VSSM immediately brought them ration and supplies. We also offered to bring the children to our hostel once it begins functioning as usual.  As of now,  Ritaben has agreed to send them. Apart from this,  we also intend to support Ritaben’s wish to start a small business of selling vegetables either through a hand cart or kiosk.  These children can benefit under the government’s guardian scheme since their father is dead and mother has abandoned them but because the mother is still alive they aren’t eligible. We will be raising this query with the government.

Valabhai from Radhanpur’s Limbad village is an elderly gentleman. Completely blind at one eye, the second eye has partial vision. His wife also is vision impaired. Valabhai worked to earn a daily living but with age, that too has become difficult. The wife sets out to beg. The couple has 3 children. The lady who helped them the most to run the house succumbed to Covid. The living condition has gone turned worst. Valabhai too sets out to beg along with the three children. 

Every day we come across many such cases. The first thing we do is to comfort these families and provide them with ration kits. If needed we also assist with the treatment if the person is hospitalised.

The pandemic has directly and indirectly impacted all of us. The condition of daily wage earners has turned worst. So has the condition of many performing artists. The Bhavai performers never seek help from VSSM, but the pandemic has adversely impacted them as there is a ban on gatherings. Baldevbhai from Kalol has requested help on behalf of the Bhavaiya community.

In a nutshell, we are trying to help economically deprived families whose conditions have turned pathetic as a result of this pandemic. The information of truly deserving families reached us through our team at the grassroots, of by the people themselves or by individuals like Shankarbhai Chamtha, Pravinbhai Desai… Thank you for helping us reach the most impacted.

As humans if not now when will we stand beside our fellow human beings?? And as I always say, we play the role of facilitator it is you who keep the ball rolling.

મા આવું કરી શકે?

અમારા કાર્યકર વિનોદના મોંઢે છોટાઉદેપુરના લુણજાગામની વાત સાંભળી મન હચમચી ગયું.ત્રણ બાળકોના પિતા ગુજરી ગયા. માએ થોડા જ સમયમાં એ બાળકોને મુકીને બીજે ઘર માંડી દીધું. કાકા કાકીને પોતાને બે બાળકો. એમણે આ નોંધારા બાળકોની કાળજી લેવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.. મજૂરીમાં જે મળે તેમાં આ બધાનો ગુજારો ચાલે. ત્યાં કાળમૂખા કોરોનાની બીજી લહેર આવી. કાકા નેે તાવ, ખાંસી થયા. કાકી રીટાબહેનને લાગ્યું મટી જશે. વળી એવા પૈસાય ક્યાં હતા તે દવાખાને જાય.. દર્દ વધ્યું ને કાકા દેવલોક પામ્યા. હવે રીટાબહેન માથે પાંચે બાળકોની જવાબદારી આવી.. અમે તત્કાલ તો રાશન પહોંચાડ્યું, બાળકોને પણ અમારી હોસ્ટેલ શરૃ થાય એટલે અમારા ત્યાં ભણવા મુકવા રીટાબહેનને કહ્યું, એમણે હાલ તો હા પાડી છે.એ સિવાય રીટાબહેન શાકભાજીની લારી કે નાની દુકાન કરવા ઈચ્છે તો એ મદદ માટે પણ કહ્યું છે. સરકારની પાલક યોજનામાં મા-બાપ વિહોણા બાળકોને મદદ મળે. અહીંયા બાપ નથી ને મા જતી રહી છે તે બાળકોને કઈ કેટેગરીમાં મુકવા તેમને મદદ ના મળી શકે? ખેર આ તો સરકારને પુછીશું.

રાધનપુરનું લીંબડકાગામના વાલાભાઈની ઉંમર ઘણી. એક આંખે અંઘ બીજીમાં ઝાંખુ દેખાય. તેમના પત્ની પણ દિવ્યાંગ. ભાઈ મજૂરી કરતા પણ ઉંમર થતા કામ મળવાનું બંધ થયું. પત્ની ગામમાંથી માંગી લાવે ને ગુજારો ચાલે.આ બેઉને ત્રણ બાળકો. આ કોરોનામાં ઘરનું ગુજરાન ચલાવાવમાં જેમનો મોટો ફાળો રહેતો તે બહેન ગુજરી ગયા. ઘરની સ્થિતિ હવે એકદમ ખરાબ થઈ. વાલાભાઈ બાળકને લઈને માંગવા જાય..

આવા કેટલાય કિસ્સા અમારી સમક્ષ નીત આવે છે. અમે પ્રથમ તો સાંત્વના આપી રાશન આપવાનું કરીએ. એ પછી જરૃર પડે હોસ્પીટલમાં વ્યક્તિ દાખલ હોય તો સારવારમાં મદદ કરીએ.

આ સિવાય કોરાનાને લઈને સીધી નહીં પણ આડકતરી અસર થઈ હોય તેવા વ્યક્તિઓમાં રોજમદાર કામદાર તો ખરા પણ ભવાઈ ભજવતા ભવાયા જેમણે ક્યારેય અમારી પાસે મદદની માંગણી નથી કરી. પણ છેલ્લા એક વર્ષથી બેન કોરોનામાં ભવાઈ ભજવવા ક્યાંય જવાયું નથી કહીને કલોલના બળદેવભાઈ ભવાયાએ સમાજ માટે મદદ માંગી.. 

ટૂંકમાં કોરોનાને લઈને દયનીય સ્થિતિમાં મુકાયા હોય એમને અમારાથી શક્ય મદદ કરવાનું અમે કરી રહ્યા છીએ..

આફતમાં આવી પડેલા સ્વજનોની રાવ અમારા સુધી અમારા કાર્યકરો, ક્યાંક સીધા અસરગ્રસ્ત લોકો તો ક્યાંક શંકરભાઈ ચામઠા ને પ્રવિણભાઈ દેસાઈ જેવા લોકોએ પહોંચાડી.. આભાર આપ સૌનો..

માણસ છીએ.. આવા સમયે આપણા પ્રિયજનોની પડખે ઉભા નહીં રહીએ તો ક્યારે રહીશું? વળી હંમેશાં કહુ અમે તો નિમિત્ત માત્ર કોઈ આપે એ યોગ્ય જગ્યા પહોંચાડવાનું...આભાર મહર્ષીભાઈ, ઋતુ, અને સ્પર્શનો તમે આ કાર્યમાં સાથે છો એનો રાજીપો...

 “Ben, do take care of yourself. We have learnt through internet that the situation in Ahmedabad is pretty bad hence, called up. Please do not go out of the house.”

Every 3-4 days Bhikhabhai Saraniyaa calls up from Dideda village where he resides. “We might be bothering you with continuous complaints of we do not have this and that… But please do not bother much, don’t listen to all our complaints. Just remain in the house,” he calls up to tell me this yesterday.

The affection the communities shower is humbling.       

“I will not step out of the house but I should be doing my best from within the walls of my house, right?”

 During these crisis numerous well-wishing friends have come forward to support the nomadic and other marginalised communities and ensure that they do not go hungry.

National Federation of Insurance Field Workers of India NFIFWI has made a generous contribution of Rs. 14 lacs to enable us provide ration to 2000 families. Each kit consists of food and grains worth Rs. 700.

In the last two  days we have provided kits to 1000 families  of which  584 families in Banaskantha, 331 families in Rajkot and Morbi, 53 in Ahmedabad’s Detroj and 33 in Mehsana and Gandhinagar.

'બેન તમે હાચવજો.. અમદાવાદમાં સ્થિતિ ઘણી ખરાબ સે. અમે નેટ માથે હમાચાર હોભળ્યા.. એટલે તમારી માથે ફોન કીધો. તમે ભઈસાબ બારા ચોય ના નેહરતા...'

ભીખાભાઈ સારણિયા દીદેડાગામમાં રહે.. દર બે ચાર દિવસે ફોન કરીને ખબર અંતર પુછે.. ગઈ કાલે તો કહ્યું,

'અમે બધા આ નહી ન ફલોણું નઈ ન એવું કહીન તમારુ બહુ લોહી પીતા હસું . પણ તમે અમારી માથે બહુ જીવ ના બાળતા, કશું હોભળતા નઈ, ભલા થઈન બારા ના નેકળતા. ઘરમો જ રેજો..

કેવી અદભૂત લાગણી..
મે કહ્યું.. હું ઘર બહાર નહીં નીકળું પણ ઘરમાં રહીને મારાથી થાય તે કરવાનું તો

 મારે કરવું જોઈએ ને?

આફતની આ ઘડીમાં ઘણા પ્રિયજનો તકવંચિતોની- વિચરતી જાતિઓની વહારે આવ્યા અને ખાવાની તકલીફ આ પરિવારોને પડે નહીં તે માટે શક્ય મદદ VSSMને કરી રહ્યા છે.

નેશનલ ફેડરેશન ઓફ ઈન્સ્યુરન્સ ફિલ્ડ વર્કર્સ ઓફ ઇન્ડિયા ( NFIFWI ) એ પણ 2000 પરિવારોને રાશન આપવા 14 લાખની માતબર રકમની મદદ કરી. જેમાંથી પ્રત્યેક પરિવારને રૃપિયા સાતનો કીટ આપવાનું અમે કરી રહ્યા છીએ.

અગાઉ 1000 પરિવારોને રાશન આપ્યું બાકીના હજાર પરિવારોને પણ છેલ્લા બે દિવસમાં રાશન આપી દીધું.

તેમણે આપેલી રકમમાંથી. બનાસકાંઠામાં - 584, રાજકોટ, મોરબીમાં રહેતા 331, અમદાવાદના દેત્રોજમાં રહેતા 53, મહેસાણા અને ગાંધીનગરમાં રહેતા 33 પરિવારોને રાશનકીટ આપી.  

આભાર ફેડરેશન સાથે સંક્ળાયેલા તમામ પ્રિયજનોનો..

Mittalba, we are feeding paani no rabdo to our kids. We have no choice but to tell you to please help us!!” Salimbhai from Juna Deesa called up to share this plight. 

I could not understand what that was hence asked, “ what is paani no rabdo?”

“Add flour to water and boil it for a while,” he explained. 

“Oh!!”

In the absence of food and supplies, I hear many such ingenious foods being cooked by these families.

 VSSM could provide ration kits to these families from the financial support it receives from its well-wishers. The donations are pouring in but so are the calls from people calling up to tell us that they have nothing to eat. 

 The generous support we received from Star Chemicals enabled us provided ration kits to 358 families of Banaskantha’s Diyodar, Bhabhar, Kankrej and Lakhani.

Raju Nat’s elder uncle Bijalbhai called up from Lathi the other day, “Ben, we are in a great difficulty here. I wish to start a community kitchen here. We can at the least provide two meals a day…”

“Bijalbhai, you yourself beg for food, how do you plan to start a community kitchen?” was my curious reply.

“If I am begging for myself, why can I beg for others?”

I tried to discourage him, told him it is not right to do so. I told him we shall manage to provide ration kits to all the families in trouble.

With the support of ever so generous and dear Nanditaben Parekh, Jayeshbhai Sherdalal, Vimla Thakkar and Rajendrabhai Patel we managed to provide ration kits to 76 families living in Lathi and Bagasara and 138 families living in Saapar. The kits reached them because of the hard work and efforts of our Ramesh. Each of these ration kits costs Rs. 700.

We are grateful to our well-wishing family members of VSSM who always decide to stand beside us.

In Bagasara Ramesh called the identified families to his home to take away the ration.

લાઠીમાં રહેતા રાજુ નટના બાપુજી બીજલભાઈનો ફોન આવ્યો,

'બેન આંયા બધા બહુ તકલીફમાં છે. મારી ઈસ્સા સે રસોડું શરૃ કરવાની. બાપડા બધાને બે ટંક ખાવા તો મળે..'

મે કહ્યું, 'બીજલભાઈ તમે જ માંગી ભીખીને લાવો છો આવામાં રસોડું કરો તો બધાને ખવડાવો ક્યાંથી..'

મે એમના આ હરખને દબાવ્યો..આવું ના કરવા સમજાવ્યા.

અને જેટલા તકલીફમાં છે તે સૌને આપણે રાશનકીટ આપવાની વ્યવસ્થા કરીશું તેમ કહ્યું.

પ્રત્યેક પરિવારને 700ની રાશનકીટ આપી.

આભાર આપ સૌ પ્રિયજનોનો... તકલીફમાં આવી પડેલા આપણા આ પરિવારોની પડખે ઊભા રહી આપે જે સહયોગ કર્યો તે માટે આભારી છું.

બગસરામાં તો જરૃરિયાતમંદ પરિવારોને ઓળખી તેમને રમેશે પોતાના ઘરે બોલાવ્યા અને રાશન આપ્યું..

અહીં રાશન કીટ મેળવનાર પરિવારની યાદી મુકવામાં આવી છે. જેથી મદદ કરનારને પણ એની જાણ રહે.
