Renukaba’s Gratitude: A Little Support, A Big Heart — VSSM

Mittal Patel meets Renukaba

The buffaloes had gone into the pond to drink water, but they would not come out. Renukaba’s son stepped into the water to bring them out. His efforts helped the buffaloes come out safely, but her son never came out.

With a heavy heart, Renukaba from Vagad in Kutch told us this story. While speaking about Renukaba, our field worker Shankarbhai said to me, “Ben, our Renukaba is insisting that she wants to meet you. Let us go and meet her.”

As part of our work, we travel to many remote areas, and along the way, there is often someone who wishes to meet us. Some simply want to see us, while others want to share something from their lives. I assumed Renukaba too must have something to tell us—or perhaps she simply wanted to meet me.

Renukaba lives in Balasar village in Vagad. At the end of a narrow lane stood a small house built under a government housing scheme. In front of it was a simple tin shed. Renukaba was sitting there beside the traditional stove, dressed in black clothes. She belongs to the Maldhari community, and her attire reflected her way of life. Her husband, Ghanabha, was sitting beside her on a cot.

Our field worker Shankarbhai has been visiting her regularly for the past three years to deliver ration, so she knows him well.Pointing towards me, Shankarbhai said, “Ba, you used to tell me to bring Ben to meet you, didn’t you? So I have brought her today.”Ba looked at me and said, “I kept telling Shankarbhai, ‘Bring Ben here at least once.’”She then held my hand and made me sit beside her.I asked her, “Why were you remembering me so much? Did you need something?”

She replied, “I wanted to see you. I didn’t need anything else.”I was surprised.“You wanted to see me? Why?”She said, “Shankarbhai comes every month and brings us grain. He tells me that all this is sent by Ben from Ahmedabad. I wanted to see the person who gives us this food at least once. I kept telling him, ‘Bring Ben soon. If I pass away without seeing her, my soul will not find peace.’”

I was speechless.Who is the giver and who is the receiver? Everything is created by God. We believe that we are merely instruments. Yet, seeing Ba’s feelings brought tears to my eyes.Ba was expressing her gratitude, but not everyone is able to express such feelings.I held her hand and said, “I am grateful for your feelings, but honestly, neither you nor we are really the giver or the receiver here. We are all only instruments. But yes, God sent us to you, and for that, we should certainly be grateful to Him.”

Then Ba took ₹300 from her pocket, held it out to Shankarbhai and said, “Go, brother, and get something to eat for everyone.”“Ba, we don’t want anything to eat.”But she would not listen. She said, “How can that be? You have come to my doorstep and if I don’t feed you something, what kind of host would I be?”

There is hardly anything in her home. Even the money she offered Shankarbhai was probably from the pension she receives under the government’s old-age pension scheme. Her life is filled with hardships, and yet she had such a strong desire to do something for those who had come to her home. That day, I realised once again that a person does not become great because of wealth. A person becomes great because of the size of their heart.

Ba had one son. He used to work grazing other people’s buffaloes in the village. One day, the buffaloes went into the pond to drink water but did not come out. Renukaba’s son entered the water to bring them back. The buffaloes came out safely because of his efforts.

But her son did not.Ba lost her 18-year-old son.As she spoke about him, her eyes filled with tears.

I tried to change the subject and asked, “Ba, does everything come properly in the ration kit? Is there anything missing?”“Everything comes perfectly. But add one packet of washing powder too.”

Before reaching Ba’s home, Shankarbhai had told me that he personally takes washing powder for her every month. So I immediately understood what she meant.Ba continued, “We are Maldharis, and our clothes are thick. Washing these clothes with soap is difficult, and my hands hurt a lot. But if we put some washing powder in the water and soak the clothes for two or three hours, they become easier to wash. So when you send everything else, please send some washing powder too.”Such a small request.Yet hearing her ask us to send washing powder made us happy. It made us feel that she considered us one of her own.

I asked about the old-age pension she receives from the government. We learned that Ba receives ₹1,200 a month. However, because of problems with Ghanabha’s eyesight and fingerprints, he has stopped receiving his pension. And this is not just Ghanabha’s problem.

Many elderly people are unable to authenticate their fingerprints, and as a result, as they themselves say, they have stopped receiving “Modi’s ₹1,200.”It is important that this ₹1,200 reaches elderly people who genuinely need it.Still, we felt grateful that we were able to reach such a remote area and stand beside families who truly needed support.

As we got up to leave, Ba said to me,“Now that I have seen you, I can leave this world in peace.”Her words stayed with me.
