A Little Light in Teja Bapa’s Eyes with the help from VSSM...

Mittal Patel meets Tejabapa and Devima

Teja Bapa… His name carries the word teja, meaning light, yet there is hardly any light left in his eyes.

His wife, Devima, too, can no longer stand upright.Old age is difficult for everyone. But when there is someone at home to care for you and ask how you are doing, getting through old age becomes a little easier. Without that support, every day can be painful—watching your blurred vision, trembling hands and aching, unsteady legs.

Teja Bapa and Devima live in Shiravandh, in Lodhrani village of the Vagad region of Kutch. They spent their entire lives working as daily-wage labourers. Whatever they earned was used to run the household. They lived on a simple principle: earn today, eat today.

When your life depends on daily wages, how can you possibly save for the future? But now, Ba and Dada have grown old. Their bodies no longer support them as they once did, and without someone to depend on, living each day has become difficult. For the past three years, under VSSM’s Mavjat Programme, we have been regularly providing ration to around 800 needy families like that of Teja Bapa and Devima.

During our recent visit to Vagad, our field worker Shankarbhai took us especially to meet Teja Bapa. Seeing the condition of his eyes, we decided to take him to a doctor. Perhaps treatment could help bring a little light back into his eyes.Teja Bapa says,“God sent you to us. Now we have peace of mind about our food. I cannot eat rotla anymore, but with the rice and dal you send, I cook rice and dal and eat. That gives me some relief.”Hearing this made us happy. What greater blessing can there be than becoming an instrument in bringing a little light into someone’s life?Teja Bapa used to receive an old-age pension. But because his fingerprints can no longer be detected due to his age, he has stopped receiving his pension.

The difficulties created by technology and authentication systems for elderly people like him are something that truly needs to be addressed within the government system. You too can support the Mavjat Programme. If God has given you the means, you can become a Mavjatar—the guardian of an elderly person in need.₹1,650 a month may not seem like a very large amount. But it can help safeguard the life of a Ba or Dada. All it takes is a willingness to become an instrument of care.
