“Alcohol is prohibited here if we find any of  our fellow community men drunk, we adorn him with clothes and jewellery of our women and take him around the settlement.” It may sound a little too harsh,  but this is a custom followed by the Fulvadee community we work with.

Patan’s Harij has a substantial concentration of Fulvadee community. Many years ago, the government had stepped in and provided plots to many families but many were still left without one. VSSM has requested the District Collector to ensure these families receive plots. We are hopeful that they will receive it by 2022,  along with assistance to build a house. Our respected Prime Minister has pledged house for all homeless by 2022  these families fall into this category.

The Vadee couples lead an itinerant lifestyle, the keep wandering in search of work hence,  their children are never a part of any mainstream school. Education is key to progress for this community. The government does run a seasonal hostel in Harij, but the number of children is huge and not all can be accommodated. VSSM has built a hostel for these children in Banaskantha’s Kankar village. The children will be able to stay there and attend the public school in their village. Harij also needs a similar facility.

The community had been calling to see me for a very long time. I was with this community recently when they requested plots for the remaining families. The community leaders had already prepared a list of homeless families and showed us their current living condition. Sharing the glimpse of it here….

'અમારામાં દારૃની બંધી છે અગર ભૂલથી કોઈ દારૃ પી જાય તો અમે અમારી બહેનોના કપડાં અને શણગાર એ ભાઈને પહેરાવીએ અને પછી આખી વસાહતમાં એને ફેરવીએ..'

આપણે જેને પછાત ગણીએ છીએ એ ફુલવાદી સમુદાયનો આ રિવાજ.. 

પાટણના હારીજ પાસે એમની ઘણી મોટી વસતિ.. સરકારે વર્ષો પહેલાં એમનાંમાના કેટલાકને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ને ઘર બાંધવા સહાય કરેલી પણ હજુ ઘણા પરિવારો રહી જાય છે. આ પરિવારોને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફળવાય તે માટે કલેક્ટર શ્રીને રજૂઆત કરી છે. 

આશા છે 2022 પહેલાં આ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ ફળવાય ને ઘર બાંધવા મદદ પણ મળે. મૂળ આપણા વડાપ્રધાન શ્રીનું સ્વપ્ન દરેક ઘરવિહોણાને ઘર આપવાનું છે માટે..

વાદી સમુદાયમાં મા- બાપ કામ ધંધા અર્થે વિચરણ પણ ઘણું કરે. એટલે બાળકોનું ભણવાનું ખાસ થાય નહીં. હારીજમાં સરકાર સીઝનલ હોસ્ટેલ ચલાવે પણ બાળકોની સંખ્યા અહીંયા ઘણી એટલે ઘણા બધા બાળકો રહી જાય છે.. 

અમે બનાસકાંઠાના કાંકરેજના કાકરગામમાં વાદી પરિવારોના ઘરોની સાથે સાથે એક હોસ્ટેલ પણ બાંધી છે જ્યાં બાળકો રહી શકે ને ભણી શકે. 

બસ આવી જ કોઈ વ્યવસ્થા હારીજમાં થાય તો બધુ બરાબર.. 

મૂળ શિક્ષણ આવશે તો આ સમાજનો વિકાસ પણ ઝડપથી થશે માટે...

હું હારીજ એમની વસાહતમાં ગઈ મૂળ ઘણા વખતથી એ બોલાવતા માટે અને સૌએ રહેવા પ્લોટ આપવા વિનંતી કરી, આગવાને પરિવારની યાદી બતાવી અને ઘરવિહોણાની સ્થિતિ પણ એમને બતાવી...જે તમને બતાવી રહી છું.

‘Ben, I wouldn’t have called you up with this request since it is becoming difficult to live without it I decided to call you up!!”

“What?”

“We have enough food to survive!”

“Then what?”

“Will share if you promise not to scold!!”

“OK, I won't scold. Tell me.”

“Ben, can you help me with bidi?”

I couldn’t stop myself from breaking into loud laughter after hearing Devabhai’s request. 

“I am so glad to hear this. When I would request or school you would tell me that if you did not smoke you felt gas building up, constipated, you experienced pain in the chest. I cannot help you in any way in this matter.”

“O my Ben, this is not the time to laugh at me. I might die. It is so difficult to survive a day without smoking. Please help me find bidi!!”

“I would never do that in my life. Have patience maybe these conditions might help you give up your addiction completely.”

Many addicts like Devabhai are reeling under tremendous withdrawal symptoms because the complete lockdown and closure of non-essential services. 

The women of Ramdevnagar’s Bawri settlement were overjoyed with the post-lock-down conditions of the addicted men in their settlement. 

“Ben there is no sight of alcohol or marijuana. All those who said they would die if they don’t drink are all lying in corners of their houses and surviving on Khichri meals. God Bless Modi Saheb, he has made it hard for all these addicts to access their addictions.”

The social media is buzzing with discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of a 21-day lock-down. And these are some liked and un-liked repercussions of the present lockdown.  

My phone has been continuously ringing ever since the lockdown was announced. Today, there has been no call to complain about the non-availability of ration. And that brings much relief to me. No calls also mean I could have my lunch on time today because last few days have been maddening and the calls to ensure my large family received grains to cook and eat gave too little time to eat lunch. Maulik and Kiara have been very patient and supportive. 

And Devabhai’s call today brought that much-needed laughter in this trying times. 

Thought of sharing this incidence with you all to lighten up the atmosphere.

The moment any of my family members sees me approaching their bidis and gutka go into hiding or else they have to listen to my long lecture. But yes it is from one of the settlements.

'બેન તમન ના કેવરાય પણ હવ રેવરાતુ નઈ એટલ કઉ સુ...'

'શું?'

'ખાવા પીવાની તો બાપલા તમે હખ કરી આલી..પણ..'

'પણ શું?'

'તમે લડો નઈ તો કઉ..'

'નઈ લડુ બોલો..'

'આ બીડીનું કાંક કરી દ્યો ને...'

દેવાભાઈનો કરુણ અવાજ સાંભળીને હું જોરથી હસી અને કહ્યું,

'ચાલો સારુ થયું હું વર્ષોથી વઢતી વ્યસ્ન મુકો ત્યારે કહેતા બેન,બીડી ના પીવું તો ગેસ થઈ જાય, છાતીમાં ગભરામણ થઈ જાય. અરે કબજિયાત થઈ જાય એવું પણ કહેતા..હવે આમાંનું કશું થાય છે?'

'ઓ મારા બેન તમારી ગા શું મજાક હું લેવા કરો સો..મારો જીવ જાય સે. કેમેય કરીન્ દાડો ટૂંકો જ નઈ થતો.. તમે બીડીનું કાંક કરી દ્યો ભઈ'સાબ'

'હું તો જીંદગીમાં ના કરુ..થોડી ધીરજથી કામ લ્યો. આ ફેરા બીડી છૂટી જશે...'

21 દિવસના ફાયદા - ગેરફાયદાની ઘણી વાતો સોસીયલ મિડીયામાં ચાલે છે.,વ્યસનને લઈને પણ ફાયદા - ગેરફાયદા...

આજે રાશન નથી, ખાવા નથી એવું કહેનારાના ફોન નથી એટલે મનેય નિરાંત છે..

કોરાનાએ ઘરમાં બેસાડ્યા પણ આટલા દિવસે પહેલીવાર એક વાગે જમી. નહીં તો મારા બહોળા પરિવારની રાશનની ચિંતા કરવામાં ચાર ક્યારે વાગી જતા એનો ખ્યાલ નહોતો આવતો.

મૌલિક અને કિઆરાએ આટલા દિવસ ઘણું વેઠ્યું...

ત્યાં દેવાભાઈના આ ફોને મને ઘણી હળવી કરી..

તમેય મજા લ્યો માટે તમને આ વાત કહી..ફોટો દેવાભાઈનો નથી.. પણ છે મારા બહોળા પરિવારના જ એક સભ્યનો...

અનેરી અમારી આ વસાહતોમાં ગયેલી એ વેળા એણે લીધેલો ફોટો..

મારા નસીબમાં આવા ફોટો નહીં. મને તો જોઈને જ બીડી ગાયબ થઈ જાય નહીં તો મારુ લેક્ચર સાંભળવું પડે બિચારા આ બંધાણીઓને....
