Mittal Patel meets Muktaba and Jagdishkaka

This smile on our faces is fake; we pretend to look happy. The beggars can beg for food, and we cannot even do that. We have no choice but to endure the pain poverty brings along. If there is no food, we drink water and spend the night but cannot stretch our hands...”  Muktaba was in tears as she narrated their anginous living condition.

Muktaba and Jagdishkaka’s son used to fend for them, but last year the couple lost her only son to a freak accident. Somehow the marriage of their son did not last long, but the income he earned helped sustain Muktaba and Jagdishkaka. The family lived in a rented house, and life just rolled on until the tragedy struck. Their daughter is married into a joint family and her financial condition too is fragile, so she also could not help her parents financially.

With no choice left, Muktaba began working as domestic help in the neighbourhood. Even though it was difficult for her to work as domestic help because of her age and body condition, she continued working because the couple had no other choice. Kaka had suffered a stroke that had paralysed his half body, Muktaba also had the added responsibility of tending to his needs.

After the death of their son, the couple had no resources to pay the rent; hence they reached out to a builder and requested a place to stay against taking care of the premises. The builder sympathised and gave them refuge. This eased their living situation for a year. But as the apartments reached the completion stage, they were asked to move out.

The family had a house in Lodhika, but their nephew cheated with them and made Kaka stamp on the transfer document pretending it be a pension application. The couple has no money to fight a case or hire a lawyer.

When they learnt about a room for a cleaner at a building, they approached the residents and requested a place to stay. They were allowed to move into the room on the condition that Muktaba would sweep the premises for free. Which she does apart from cleaning dishes at a couple of houses. The remuneration from these odd jobs is meagre; hence, meeting the medical and food expenses is difficult.

When our Chayabahen and Kanubhai learnt about the condition of this couple, they immediately brought them under Mavjat’s care program, and a ration kit began reaching them every month.

I made it a point to go and see them recently. It was heart-wrenching to learn how greedy individuals take no mercy and lynch such destitute elderly.

'લાફો મારી ગાલ રાતો રાખવો પડે એવી અમારી હાલત છે. માંગણિયાર લોકો તો ગામ પાહે માંગી હકે પણ અમે તો એમેય નથી કરી હકતા. ખાવા ના હોય તો પાણી પીને પડ્યા રેવાનું પણ કોઈ પાહે...'

આટલું બોલતા બોલતા મુક્તા બાની આંખોમાં ઝળઝળિયા આવી ગયા. 

તેમનો દિકરો એક વર્ષ પહેલાં જ ગુજરી ગયો. દિકરાના લગ્ન કરાવેલા પણ કોઈક કારણસર એનું છુટુ થઈ ગયું. દીકરો દસ હજાર કમાવી લાવતો જેમાંથી તે મુક્તા બા ને જગદીશ કાકાને ખવડાવતો. 

ભાડાના ઘરમાં એ રહેતા. હખેડખે જિંદગી નીકળતી. ત્યાં અચાનક દીકરો ગૂુજરી ગયો. માથે આભ ફાટ્યું. એમને દીકરી ખરી પણ એ સંયુક્ત કુટુંબમાં રહે વળી એનીયે સ્થિતિ નાજુક એટલે એ કાંઈ એવડી મોટી મદદ ન કરી શકે.

આખરે મુક્તા બાએ  લોકોના ઘરે કચરા પોતા, વાસણ માંજવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. પણ આ કામ એમનાથી થાય નહીં. મૂળ શરીર ભારે, ઘૂંટણમાં પણ તકલીફ એટલે ભોંય પર બેસી કામ કરવામાં તોબા થઈ જાય પણ એ બધુ અવગણીને એ કામ કરે. 

વળી પાછુ કાકાને અડધા શરીરે લકવા થઈ ગયો. તે એમનેય ઉપાડી ઉપાડીને ફેરવવા પડે. 

આવામાં દિકરો ગયા પછી ભાડું આપી શકાય તેવા પૈસા રહ્યા નહીં. આથી નવા બંધાઈ રહેલા ફ્લેટના માલીકને માલ- સામાનની મુક્તાબા પોતે ચોકી કરશેનું કહી આશરો આપવા કહ્યું. બીલ્ડ઼રે વગર પગારે રહેવા સહમતી આપી ને એમનું વરસ નીકળી ગયું. 

ફલેટ બંધાઈ જતા જગ્યા ખાલી કરવાનું કહેણ આવ્યું. હવે પ્રશ્ન હતો રહેવા ક્યાં જશું નો? લોધિકામાં એમનું ઘર હતું પણ દીકરો ગુજરી ગયા પછી ભત્રીજો આવીને પેન્શનના કાગળ તૈયાર કરુ છુ અહીંયા સહી કરો એમ કહીને મકાનના કાગળ પર કાકાનો અંગૂઠો કરાવી લીધો ને મકાન એમના નામે કરાવી લીધું. એટલે એ રસ્તો બંધ થયો. હા કેસ કરવાનું મુકતાબા એ કહ્યું. પણ એ માટે એમની પાસે પૈસા નહીં. 

આમ રહેવાનો મોટો પ્રશ્ન ઊભો થયો. ત્યાં અચનાક એક બીલ્ડીંગમાં રહીશોએ એક નાનકડી ઓરડી બિલ્ડીંગનું સફાઈ કામ તેમજ વોચમેનનું કામ કરનાર માટે બનાવી હોવાનો ખ્યાલ આવ્યો...

મુક્તા બા ત્યાં પહોંચ્યા ને પોતાને એ ઓરડીમાં રહેવા દેવા વિનંતી કરી. બિલ્ડ઼ીંગના રહેવાસીઓએ બિલ્ડીંગમાં કચરો વાળવાનું કામ વિનામુલ્યે કરશો તો રહેવા દઈશુંનું કહ્યું. બુઢા માવતરોને તો આસરો જોતો હતો. એમણે એ કાર્ય માથે લીધું.

મુક્તા બા સવારે બિલ્ડીંગમાં કચરો વાળે. ને પછી બે ત્રણ ઘરના વાસણ ઘસવા જાય ને હજાર પંદરસો કમાઈ લે. પણ એમાંથી દવાઓ સાથે ઘરનું પુરુ કરવું મુશ્કેલ. એમની આ વિપદા અમારા કાર્યકર છાયાબહેન અને કનુભાઈના ધ્યાને આવી. તેઓ બેય માવતરોને મળ્યા ને તુરત સ્થિતિ સમજી અમે રાશનકીટ આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. 

હું હમણાં ગઈ ત્યારે એમને મળવા ખાસ ગઈ એ વખતે એમણે આ બધુ કહ્યું. સાંભળીને હૃદયદ્રવી ઊઠે. કેવો ફરેબ એમના પોતાના લોકોએ એમની સાથે કર્યો. 

ખેર આવા 225 થી વધુ માવતરોને અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપીએ છીએ જેથી એ પેટ ભરીને ખાઈ શકે.

Thank you, Mr Chief Minister and District Collector Morbi.

Thanks to your empathy, the families belonging to nomadic and de-notified communities scattered and living under inhumane conditions on wasteland will now have a permeant address as they begin to receive residential plots.

Living under the open sky, the Gadaliya families of Nichi Mandal have endured harsh living conditions for generations. If winters and summers are unbearable, monsoons remain filled with anguish. The families have always dreamt of a pucca house, but no one represented their needs.

After VSSM came into contact with these families, it filled applications on their behalf. Years of constant follow-ups by our Kanubhai and Chayaben resulted in the allotment of plots. Our Prime Minister has pledged ‘housing for all the homeless’; hence, we were hopeful that the families would receive the plots, but the time it took for the files to move forward exhausted us.

When we brought the condition of these homeless families to the notice of our Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel, the government machinery acted swiftly, and allotments happened as soon as possible. The compassionate district collector was trying his best to ensure the families were allotted the plots. Still, instructions from the Chief Minister’s office speeded the process and orders to allot plots to the Gadaliya families of Nichi Mandal were issued. The families were elated with the development.

The process for allotment  of plots to families living in other makeshift settlements in Morbi district is also underway. 

We are grateful to the Chief Minister, the Morbi District Collector and the entire district administration. And to the relentless efforts poured in by Kanubhai and Chayaben.

Our heartiest congratulations to the families who have received the plots. I hope these plots bring you a permanent address and a place to call home.

તમારી લાગણીના લીધે આજે મોરબી જિલ્લાના વિવિધ ગામોમાં સરકારી ખરાબામાં અમાનવીય સ્થિતિમાં પડ્યા રહેતા વિચરતી વિમુક્ત જાતિના પરિવારો કે જેઓ કાયમી સરનામુ નહોતા ધરાવતા તેમને પ્લોટ મળવાની શરૃઆત થઈ. 

નીચી માંડલમાં ગાડલિયા પરિવારો પતરામાંથી બનાવેલા છાપરાંમાં રહે. ટાઢ, તડકો બેઉ આ છાપરાંમાં કાઢવો મુશ્કેલ ને ચોમાસુ પણ એવું જ આકરુ. આવામાં અમારુ પોતાનું ઘર થાય એવી એષણા વર્ષોથી આ પરિવારો રાખે પણ એમના વતી રજૂઆત કોણ કરે?અમે આ પરિવારોના સંપર્કમાં આવ્યા ને તેમને પ્લોટ ફળવાય તે માટેની દરખાસ્ત કરી. પરિણામ મળે તે માટે અમારા કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ છાયાબહેનનું સતત ફોલોઅપ.વળી આપણા વડાપ્રધાન શ્રીનું સ્વપ્ન ઘરવિહોણા પરિવારોને ઘર આપવાનું .બસ એટલે આ પરિવારોને ઘર મળશે તેવો ભરોષો હતો જ. જો કે સમય જઈ રહ્યો હતો એટલે થાક્યા પણ હતા. 

ત્યાં રાજ્યના મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી ભુપેન્દ્રભાઈ પટેલના ધ્યાને આ સમુદાયના ઘરવિહોણા પરિવારોની વિગત મુકીને તેમણે તંત્રને સાબદુ કર્યું. 

કલેક્ટર શ્રી સંવેદનશીલ હતા એ પ્રયત્ન કરી રહ્યા હતા. બસ મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીના કાર્યાલય થી વેગ મળ્યો ને મોરબીના નીચી માંડલમાં રહેતા ગાડલિયા પરિવારોને પ્લોટ ફાળવવાનો હુકમ થયો..આ પરિવારો રાજી રાજી..

સાથે મોરબી જિલ્લાની અન્ય વસાહતોમાં અસ્થાયી પડાવોમાં રહેતા પરિવારોને પણ સત્વરે પ્લોટ ફળવાય તેવી કાર્યવાહી થઈ રહી છે. 

આભાર સંવેદનશીલ મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી તેમજ કલેક્ટર શ્રી ને મોરબીના સમગ્ર વહીવટીતંત્રનો... કાર્યકર તરીકે કનુભાઈ અને છાયાબહેનની પણ અથાગ મહેનત...જેમને પ્લોટ ફળવાય તેમને ઘણી શુભેચ્છા... બસ હવે આ પરિવારોના પગને વિશ્રામ મળશે. કાયમી સરનામુ મળશે...

Mittal Patel meets Kaki during her visit to Surenedranagar

We had walked a few steps into the lane near Surendranagar’s central market to step into a courtyard house and find Kaka seated on the floor.

“Ben, Kaka and Kaki stay right here, in this front yard. The house is theirs, but a family dispute prevents them from going into the house,” Harshad, my teammate tells me.

“Can I come in?” I asked as Kaka was looking the other way.

“Of course, please do,” he welcomed us warmly.

“Where is Kaki?” I  inquired as we didn’t see her around.

“She goes to a hotel for cleaning vessels,” Kaka replied.

“Isn’t the ration we give you enough?”

“The ration is sufficient. But I need medicines for surviving. I need a nebuliser and BP medication. My wife goes to a nearby hotel twice a week; the money she earns is enough for buying medicines and milk for tea.”

“Don’t you receive a pension for the elderly?”

“No! We also don’t have Antyodaya ration card; hence additional ration is also not available.”

Listening to Kaka saddened me. While we were talking Kaki stepped in, holding her knee. She has a walking disability but needs to work because they need the extra money.

We will be helping them in the best possible way and try to link them with schemes that can bring them government assistance.

VSSM supports 225 elderly who need our support. Each undergoing a  different trauma, we might not be able to free them from their pain and anguish, but the monthly ration kits we provide does bring them a little relief.

સુરેન્દ્રનગરની બજારની નજીક એક ગલીમાં થોડુ ચાલ્યા કે એક ડેલાબંધ ઘર આવ્યું. ડેલો ખોલતા એક કાકા  ભોંય પર બેઠેલા ભળાયા. અમારા કાર્યકર હર્ષદે કહ્યું, 

'બેન કાકા જ્યાં બેઠા છે તે ઓસરીમાં જ એ ને કાકી રહે છે. પાછળ ઘર છે એ આમ એમનું છે ને નથી પણ.. કૌટુંબીક ડખા છે'

કાકાનું ધ્યાન અમારા પર નહોતું એટલે મે, 'આવું કે કાકા' એવું પુછ્યું. કાકાએ, 'ભલે પધારો બાપલા' કહી આવકાર્યા. 

કાકાના અર્ધાંગીની એટલે કે કાકી ત્યાં નહોતા. ક્યાં ગયા એવું પુછ્યું તો એમણે કહ્યું, 

'એ હોટલ પર વાસણ ઘસવા ગઈ છે'

'કેમ કાકા અમે હવે દર મહિને રાશન તો આપીએ છીએ?'

'રાશન તો મહિનો આખો સરસ ચાલે. પણ હું દવા ઉપર જીવું. શ્વાસ માટે પંપ ને બીપીની દવા મારે લેવી પડે. એટલે વાસણ ઘસવાનું થાય કે ન થાય તે અઠવાડિયામાં બે વાર અહીંયા નજીકમાં જ હોટલ છે ત્યાં જઈને વાસણ ઘસી આવે ને હોટલ માલીક પચાસ આપે તે એમાંથી દવાનો ને દૂધ ચા નો ખર્ચ ચાલે'

'નિરાધાર પેન્શન નથી મળતું?'

 'ના..'

રાશનકાર્ડ પણ અંત્યોદય નથી જેથી વધારે અનાજ પણ મળતુ નથી. કાકાની વાત સાંભળી દુઃખ થયું. અમારી વાતો ચાલતી હતી ત્યાં કાકી ઢીંચણ પકડીને પરાણે ચાલીને આવ્યા. એ અપંગ છે. ઝાઝુ ચલાતુ નથી પણ કામ કર્યા વગર ઝૂટકો નથી. 

ખેર અમારાથી થતી મદદ કરીશું. સરકારમાંથી મદદ મળે તે માટે કોશીશ કરીશું. 

પણ આવા જ 225 થી વધુ માવતરોને અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપીએ. દરેકની જુદી પીડાઓ છે. એ પીડામાંથી આપણે એમને સંપૂર્ણ મુક્ત નથી કરી શકતા પણ એમને થોડી રાહત આપવાનું મહિનાનું રાશન આપીને કરવા કોશીશ કરીએ...
