A Small Support, A Life of Dignity — Shakinabanu & VSSM

Sakinabanu spokes her side of story to Mittal Patel and her
eyes filled with tears

One day, a man came to Shakinabanu’s home. He said, “Ba, I don’t have any drinking water. I am very thirsty. Could you please give me some water?”

Shakinabanu gave him water.

As she handed him the water, little did she know that this very man would return a few days later and take away the little savings she had managed to gather.

Two days later, Shakinabanu went to the dargah to ask for alms. When she returned in the evening, she found the lock on her house broken. The little cash she had collected through begging, a few clothes, her documents and whatever small belongings she had—all of it was gone.

As Shakinabanu spoke about it, her eyes filled with tears.

“My savings are gone, my daughter. If I had even a little money, I could buy medicines, have some tea, or buy vegetables when needed. There is no one in the house who earns. I go out and ask for help, and somehow manage the household with whatever little I receive. But now…”

Shakinabanu lives in Modasa, in Aravalli district. She speaks Hindi very clearly.

Calling her dwelling a “house” would perhaps be too generous. It is more like a small hut made of tin sheets. The walls are made of tin sheets. The roof is tin as well. Even the door is so fragile that a thief would not need to break the lock—one strong kick would be enough to break it open.

Shakinabanu has grown old. She walks with the support of a stick and survives on whatever she receives while seeking alms at the dargah.

Our field worker, Touhidbhai, came to know about her difficult circumstances, and we began providing her with ration every month.

Because of this support, Shakinabanu now goes to the dargah only on Thursdays, instead of going out every day. The ration we provide gives her some peace of mind. Whatever she manages to receive through begging can then be used for her small personal expenses.

And then, in the midst of this, her house was robbed.

After the theft, Ba became so frightened that she stopped stepping out of her house for several months. We continued providing her with ration every month, which helped ease her worry about having two meals a day.

But life cannot run on food alone, can it?

She needs medicines. She needs tea and vegetables. Sometimes, there are small unexpected expenses. Earlier, Shakinabanu managed these expenses with whatever people donated outside the mosque.

But now she was afraid that if she stepped out, something else might be stolen from her home.

In a way, she had almost nothing left that anyone would want to steal. Yet she was still afraid of being robbed again. After some time, the month of Ramadan arrived. During Ramadan, Shakinabanu slowly began sitting at the dargah again. People gave her clothes. Some gave her a little money. Slowly, she managed to gather a small amount of savings again.

And then…The thief returned.Once again, the lock on her house was broken, and whatever little she had managed to gather was taken away. This time, even the eyes of the field worker who had accompanied me filled with tears when he heard the story. For a moment, I wondered—perhaps the thief was in greater need than Ba? Or perhaps he was simply heartless.Shakinabanu’s life has always been a lonely one.Years ago, her husband took their son with him and divorced her. Since then, she lived at her maternal home with her three brothers and her mother.

But now…Her mother is no more. All three of her brothers have also passed away.Everyone is gone.Only Shakinabanu remains.I asked her, “Ba, does the ration we provide every month bring you some peace?”She looked at me and said, “May Allah bless you abundantly. May He give you much more. I feel greatly relieved.”I then asked, “Ba, shall we get the floor of your house repaired? During the monsoon, the mud floor must become difficult to manage.”Ba replied, “One brother has promised that he will build a small room for me around Diwali. If he does not build it, then you can get the floor repaired for me.”Ba is a woman who is content with very little. We told her, “Ba, shall we give you a small cupboard where you can safely keep your little savings and belongings?”She smiled when she heard this.

Through VSSM, we provide monthly ration to 815 elderly people who are in need like Shakinabanu.

Our field workers play a very important role in this work. They travel from village to village, searching for people who are genuinely in need—people who have no one standing beside them to support them.

After meeting Shakinabanu, I was reminded once again that a donation does not always have to be a large amount.

Sometimes, a small act of kindness can take away the worry of “How will I survive now?” from someone’s life.

Your small contribution does not just bring ration to someone’s home… it brings an entire month of peace and reassurance to their home.

A Little Ration, A Lot of Hope — Fulima’s Story with VSSM..

Mittal Patel meets Fulima in Vagad village og Kutch

Fulima lives in a remote village in the Vagad region of Kutch. She has grown old, and her body no longer supports her as it once did. She has lost all her teeth, her eyesight has become weak, she cannot hear well, and even walking has become difficult. Her hands and legs no longer have the strength they once had.

In such circumstances, Fulima lives her life alone.

For the past three years, we have been delivering ration to Fulima’s home. During our recent visit to Vagad, we finally had the opportunity to meet her. Along with our worker, Shankarbhai, we visited the settlement where Foolima lives, among the families of the Parkara-Koli community.

These families live in extremely difficult circumstances. They collect firewood and wild produce such as satavari from the forest, clean it and sell it in the market at Rapar. Whatever little they earn is used to run their homes. Whenever they find daily-wage work, they take it up. Their income is so meagre that many times, they have to find the answer to the question, “What will we eat today?” on that very day.

Fulima lives in a pucca house in the middle of this settlement. The house was built by an organisation after the earthquake. Over time, however, the house too has become dilapidated. The biggest concern is that the land on which these families’ houses stand is still not legally registered in their names.

We have approached the Collector requesting that the Parkara-Koli families be given ownership rights to their homes and the land on which they live. We have also raised this matter with the Hon’ble Chief Minister. We hope that in the coming days, these families will receive legal rights to their own land.

When we went to deliver her ration, I asked Foolima, “Ba, how are things going now?”

Fulima replied, “I am at peace now. I no longer have to worry about going out to earn or about whether someone will give me food. God has given me two hands, and with the ration you provide, I cook my own food and eat peacefully.”

Fulima receives a monthly pension of ₹1,200. She uses it for milk, vegetables or medicines whenever needed.

I kept wondering—can ₹1,200 really bring so much relief to someone?

Perhaps we cannot even imagine it. But when we meet Fulima and many other elderly people like her, we understand how significant ₹1,200 can be for them.

With the support of all of you, we are able to deliver monthly ration to around 815 elderly people like Foolima.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported and helped make this work possible.

My fourth book, Jal Khutya...

Mittal Patel's fourth book "Jal Khutya"

My fourth book, Jal Khutya (When Water Runs Out)...

Written after nearly four years of hard work.

When water is freely available and in abundance, we often fail to realize its value. But when scarcity arises, we become alert. In fact, the entire world now needs to become conscious about water conservation.

The book Jal Khutya contains many eye-opening discussions — including the foresight of our ancestors, and how countries like Netherlands, despite having abundant water resources, make tremendous efforts to save every single drop.

It also explores why water scarcity emerged in North Gujarat, what efforts were made in Saurashtra and other states to conserve water, and why farmers in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra were driven to suicide.

This is a book worth reading and also worth gifting to others. I am not saying this merely because I wrote it, but because I truly believe the subject is extremely important.

To obtain the book, you may contact 9099936460 between 10 AM and 6 PM.

Alternatively, it can also be ordered directly from R. R. Sheth Publication

VSSM provides some comfort to Pravinbhai's family through ration kit ...

Mittal Patel meets Pravinbhai

“This bed has never been empty…”

The moment one hears these words of Pravinbhai, the heart feels heavy.

Since childhood—first his father, then his mother, then his elder sister, then his younger sister… and even today, one sister is still confined to the bed.

Whoever lies on that bed, the entire responsibility falls on Pravinbhai’s shoulders. From helping with toileting to taking care of every daily need, everything is done by his own hands.

We asked him, “Don’t you ever complain about this life?”

Pravinbhai calmly replied, “Complain about what? Can you abandon your own? One has to fulfill what is written in one’s fate, isn’t it?”

Seeing Pravinbhai’s condition in Samedra village of Banaskantha, our hearts ached.

In the entire household, Pravinbhai is the only one blessed with understanding and a sense of responsibility. The rest of the brothers and sisters are mentally challenged.

Why did this happen? Pravinbhai has no answer. But the neighbours say, “At birth, they were all perfectly fine, but over the years, their mental condition slowly deteriorated.”

It feels as though God has given Pravinbhai a special strength for service. He cannot go out to work, as he has to take care of so many people at home. Yet he has not lost courage. Since he knows how to use a sewing machine, he stitches torn clothes for villagers.

For food, they receive ration kits from VSSM. In addition, a kind-hearted man from Palanpur also provides ration kits. With this help, meals are prepared at home.

From the ₹3,000 received from the government for three persons with disabilities, expenses such as medicines, milk, and vegetables are somehow managed.

Pravinbhai says, “When we receive ration, I can peacefully take care of everyone. Otherwise, it becomes very difficult.”

Truly, in today’s times, Pravinbhai is like Shravan as a son and like Lakshman as a brother.

He has never abandoned his parents and siblings, even while living in extreme hardship.

He carries his duty not as a burden, but as a sacred responsibility.

We are grateful that we could provide some comfort to this family through ration support.

May God always keep His hand over Pravinbhai’s head—this is our prayer, and we find contentment in being a small instrument in this service.

A Step Toward National Recognition for Social Change...

The title of “Changemaker” is given to individuals who have made a significant contribution to social change. The Better India has initiated a voting process for this, and they have included our name in the list and shared the details with us.

Personally, we have never applied for awards. However, at times it feels that if the work we do is to be connected with the entire country, then it is important to be present on such platforms as well.

That is why I am sharing this information with you today. There is a voting process involved. You have been familiar with our activities for many years, and if you feel it is appropriate, I request you to please cast your vote.

We pray that God may make us instrumental in the well-being of many more elderly destitutes under VSSM's Mavjat initiative...

Mittal Patel meets Pravinabaa and her son Jaydip

We saw boards reading “Rangilu Rajkot” (Colorful Rajkot) displayed in manyplaces across the city. Reading them engulfs our hearts with joy.

In this colorful Rajkot, our volunteer Kanubhai took us to the home of Pravinabaa. The house was neat and clean, but there lingered an air of heaviness within. Pravinabaa lives there with her son, Jaydeep.

Jaydeep is differently abled. Pravinabaa is his stepmother, but she loves him immensely. She said, “When I first came into this home after marriage, Jaydeep used to release his excrement and urine in his bed and rumpled them. But with patience, I taught him everything. These days, he is my support.”

Her worry, however, is what will happen to Jaydeep after she is gone. An unspoken fear lingers in her heart. She said, “After I pass away, people may place him in the Ashram. I am afraid of how he will survive there.”

While speaking about herself and Jaydeep, her eyes kept welling up with tears. We told her, “Baa, don’t bother. God leads everybody to the proper desired path.”

She replied, “I have deep faith in Him. It is He who has sent you. Otherwise, I am no longer able to manage. I was worried about food, but now that you are here, I have no longer any worries.” Every month, we provide Pravinabaa and Jaydeep with enough groceries so they can eat well.

The government provides her with a pension, which allows her to buy vegetables and milk. However, due to health problems, her monthly medicines cost about 400–500 rupees. She said, “Please do something about this, if you can.” Yet, there was no trace of lust in her asking for or demanding more or extra.

We keep providing comforts to elders like her and other families with the help of the well-wishers associated with VSSM. Every month, groceries are provided to more than 750 older, senior citizens. We pray that God may make us instrumental in the well-being of many more!!

"We Too Deserve a Place to Live "- 124 families of Morbi keeps wandering without permanent place...

Saraniya women with a heavy heart discusses with Mittal Patel

“How long will this rejection continue?”

“Now we feel, they should just pick us up and throw us into Pakistan. It might be bearable if a foreign country treated us like this, —but it hurts far more when our own people do it,”

With a heavy heart, Fuliben Saraniya of Trajpar, Morbi, said these words. In a way, her anguish is justified.

In 2022, the Honorable Chief Minister personally handed over allotment letters of housing plots to 124 families. But when the plots were assigned, the local people vehemently opposed their settlement, and since then, the issue has been hanging in the air.

At present, these 124 families keep wandering around the Morbi area without a permanent place.

When we met them at Ravapar recently, they expressed their rage, exasperation: “Come to our settlement during the monsoon, and you’ll truly understand our situation. Where to cook in the pouring rain? Snakes constantly seep into this abandoned and desolate open land. At night, we fear even placing our feet out of the cot. Sir, we have suffered too much. If the government cannot allot us the promised land, then allot us the land somewhere else—but please arrange to settle us properly.”

Listening to such stories of extreme hardship, we become dismal with sorrow.

We approached the District Collector and requested that these families be urgently relocated to another suitable site. He assured us that he would proceed quickly to settle this issue.

It is necessary to visit the homes of these marginalized people, more particularly during the monsoon, to truly understand their real hardship. If, after seeing their lives, we still do nothing, we would rightly be called heartless. Any compassionate person would feel this way.

Therefore, we sincerely appeal to the Government and the Honorable Chief Minister to provide these families with a place where they are accepted, where no one rejects them. And we appeal to society to come out of narrow- mindedness. These families are part of us; they are ours. Before driving them out so harshly, let us try placing ourselves in their situation. Placing our feet in their shoes, even for a moment, will make us realize where and how it hurts!!

From Nomads to Homeowners – A New Life for Gadaliya Families in Morbi...

Mittal Patel meets gadaliya families of Charadva village

In Morbi, families from the Gadaliya nomadic community, who wandered for generations, now have permanent homes in Charadva.

These homes were built with the support of the government and a planning company. For years, these families lived under makeshift roofs or open skies — for them, a permanent house was just a dream. But through the joint efforts of the government and society, that dream has come true.

Of course, there were challenges. The plots allotted for housing were directly under a 64 kV power line managed by GETCO. This made construction impossible. But with the support of our Honourable Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel and the cooperation of GETCO, the power line was shifted, and the homes were finally built.

In this community, children’s education is not given much importance. Many believe that studying just five or seven books is "enough." We keep reminding them:

"If you don’t educate your children today, how will the future generation’s life improve?"

Also, their traditional occupations are no longer viable, which adds to their struggles. We continue to engage with them, hoping these conversations will help bring a shift in mindset, especially toward education.

Since getting homes, the Gadaliya families are more motivated to earn. Some now rent vehicles and drive for a living. But many more steps are needed to improve their lives further.

Recently, we planned a visit to meet the District Collector of Morbi to discuss the community’s progress and future needs. During our visit to Charadva, we had a detailed conversation with him.

Currently, seven families are still awaiting residential plots. We raised this issue during our meeting with the Collector, who assured us that swift action would be taken. We hope that in the coming days, these families too will have a home of their own.

We are deeply grateful to Honourable CM Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel. Thanks to his compassion, many families from nomadic communities now have permanent homes and a stable address — a new identity.

We also express heartfelt appreciation for our dedicated field workers Kanubhai and Chhayabahen, whose tireless efforts helped settle these families.

Having such committed team members in VSSM is truly a matter of pride.

Mittal Patel visits Kuno as a member of Cheetah Project Steering Committee...

Mittal Patel with the commitee members and other forest officers

Leopards (Cheetahs) became extinct in India about 70 years ago. The effort to reintroduce them in India is now showing success. As a member of the Cheetah Steering Committee appointed by the Government of India, I have closely observed the hard work put in by forest department officers and the government for this cause.

Currently, the leopard population has reached 29, out of which 17 were born in India…

It is an honor to be a part of this project.

Thanks to Honorable Narendra Modi and Honorable Bhupendra Yadav ji.

The engagement of communities living around Kuno—especially the Sahariya, Gurjar, and other communities—is also increasing in this project. Just as we have lion friends in Gir, here we have leopard friends working alongside us.

Leopards are wonderful animals; they never harm humans and can be considered somewhat shy creatures.

In the near future, leopards will also arrive in the Banni area of Kutch…

Now, all eyes are on Kuno…

Mittal Patel meets Vansfoda families in the Barmer district of Rajasthan...

Mittal Patel with Hansaben

"Even a dog from your maternal home feels dear, Ben..."

Hansaben lives in the Barmer district of Rajasthan. We had begun work there with nomadic denotified tribes as well as on water conservation. Currently, we’re working on locating the temporary settlements of nomadic communities.

As we were passing through a village near Barmer, we saw a few huts. From the appearance of the huts, they seemed to belong to the Vansfoda community. We stopped the vehicle and went to meet them. After a short conversation, the head of the household, Rakeshbhai, said:

"Didi, do you know Lala Bhai from Chhapi? I saw a photo of you with him."

After Rakeshbhai said this, there were conversations filled with curiosity—Do you know so-and-so brother, and what about such-and-such person?

As we were talking with Rakeshbhai, his wife came out of the hut and said directly:

"Didi, I’m from Khedbrahma. My name is Hansa."

Seeing us, Hansaben was overjoyed… She asked if she should bring some cool water, offered food, and spoke in many ways.

After that, Hansaben took me into their hut. She was hand-stitching cushion covers and showed them to me. She said:

"You’ve come from my maternal home."

Just imagine—when you go out of your state, the whole region starts to feel like your maternal home.

As we were getting ready to leave, after planning a meeting with all the Vansfoda families of Barmer, Hansaben said:

"Take a photo with me..."

So we took that photo… This is my extended family.

VSSM’s Mavjat Karyakram helps elders like Bhikhabapa eat their meals with dignity and self-respect...

Bhikhabapa gives blessings to Mittal Patel

"There is always turmoil in my heart, and I often wonder why I am alone.

I have sought an answer throughout my life.

It is said that He answers if you call Him, and I have tried to call out.

Yet somehow, my voice seems unheard.

I long to understand why I am kept at a distance and feel helpless.

Alas, I have grown weary of asking repeatedly,

Now just waiting for Him to embrace me, protect me, and keep me close."

We provide provisions to 700 destitute seniors who have no one in this world to call their own. Whenever we meet these seniors, they often express their feelings of loneliness. It saddens me to hear how they feel. Yet we remind them, "How can you say you are alone? You are not! You called out to God, and He sent people like us to be with you." Listening to us, many reflect, "What you say is absolutely true."

Bhikhabaapaa lives in Lodaraa, Gandhinagar. While his family takes care of him, he often seems unhappy being dependent on them. However, he has found comfort since we began providing him with rations. He says, "Now I eat with dignity." It is a wonderful feeling to enjoy one’s food with pride.

Many well-wishers support our mission, but the majority of assistance comes from the respected Pratulbhai Shroff of the Dr. K. R. Shroff Foundation. We are grateful for his help and the support of all our contributors.

VSSM rejuvenated Padardi lake with the support from the GIA organization...

Mittal Patel discusses water management with villagers

"Someone calls festival's arrival,

Someone says just a glimmer,

My mind prophesies,

Restoring the gone reservoir"

The people of village Padardi regretted not filtering and deepening the lake every year, especially after seeing how it had become as shallow as a saucer. If they had maintained the lake regularly, it wouldn't have required a significant amount of money to restore it. Now, however, a large sum of money is needed to restore the lake, which, for them, is a "Jalmandir."

Kakar village is located next to Padardi in Banaskantha, where families of florists reside. We strive to support the welfare of these families. Whenever we visit Banaskantha, we stay in Kakar, which is why Paadardi has caught our attention during our travels back and forth.

The people of Paadardi are aware that we rejuvenate lakes and transform them into Jalmandirs. They requested our help to deepen their village lakes. With the assistance of the GIA organization, we worked on deepening the lakes located on the village border. As a result, water from the river Maa Reva-Narmada flowed in, filling the entire lakes to the brim.

In Paadardi village, the water level has dropped to between 1,000 and 1,100 feet deep, causing five to ten borewells to fail each year. Given this situation, recharging the lakes solely with monsoon water seemed impossible. However, the government supported the villagers through the Maa Narmada initiative. Two lakes, excavated with the assistance of VSSM and the Vimukta Foundation, were successfully filled with water. As a result, farmers will no longer need to lift water from a depth of a thousand feet. Traditionally, seventy to eighty horsepower motors have been required to operate borewells. However, only a five-horsepower motor is needed to run a machine placed in a lake to draw water for irrigation.

The reduction in electricity bills is a notable benefit. Additionally, the wells in the surrounding area are being recharged thanks to the water that percolates through the bottoms of the lakes. These lakes benefit not only the farmers of Padardi village but also those from neighborhood village of Nikoi.

Seeing the filled lakes, the eyes of many farmers in the village fill with tears. The villagers say, "If the lake was not dug, the billions of liters of water that have been filled with it today, would not have been filled."

When the Jalmandir is filled with water, it not only supports the lives of farmers but also brings happiness to all living beings in the surroundiing world!

Thanks to you, GIA,  and the support of many well-wishers like you, we have successfully rejuvenated 325 lakes so far.

We are committed to rejuvenating 1,000 Jalmandirs, and we pray to God to help us achieve this noble, divine goal.

Lake deepening work started in Khoda village with the support from the Neogen Company...

Mittal Patel with the villagers of Khoda village

Many years ago, there were no water taps, and the only source of drinking water in our area was the lakes. Whenever someone went to the lake to collect water, they would come back with a pot filled with water as well as a clump of dirt, referred to as "KHOTT." They would leave this KHOTT on the edge of the lake. Both the villagers and any passersby who filled their containers at the lake would take some KHOTT and discard it outside. This could be considered a form of water tax, if you think about it.

Rameshbhai from Khodagam in Banaskantha, along with others in the village, shared the following story with us. The lakes thrived primarily because they provided essential support for the people's livelihoods, leading to a belief that water should not be taken from the lakes for free.

However, with the introduction of borewell technology, many of these lakes were abandoned. This led to a deterioration in the condition of water-bearing reservoirs. Additionally, excessive groundwater extraction caused a significant drop in the water table. As a result, the situation in North Gujarat worsened due to the declining groundwater levels.

The government is consistently concerned about water management. Organizations like ours, in collaboration with the village, have taken on the task of renovating lakes, known as Jal Mandirs. The government has also contributed by filling a number of ponds with water from Mother Reva.

Together, VSSM, KRSF, and the Vimukt Foundation have deepened 336 lakes, and this number is expected to increase. We are pleased with the progress we have made.

One notable project was the deepening of the Khodagam lake in Banaskantha, supported by the Neogen Company. The village was very receptive to this initiative. Neogen covered the excavation expenses, while local villagers assisted by transporting soil with their tractors.

As a result, the lake in the higher lands of Khodagam was successfully excavated, increasing its capacity to hold millions of liters of water. Narmada's water will also be channeled into this lake, ensuring that the village has access to water not only during the monsoon but throughout the year. This will also help recharge the lower water table.

We are especially grateful to Binaben Kanani, Harishbhai Kanani, and Harinbhai from Neogen for their unwavering support in our social work over the years.

We pray for Meghraja (the monsoon) to shower its blessings forever on all living organisms.

VSSM, KRSF
