One of the most pressing questions faced by those helping with the distribution of relief material is, “whom should we consider the flood affected?” It is a dilemma everyone experiences, including us. Yes, us! Although, we have a different perception when it comes to identifying the needy but we too had a loss of judgement in the current emergency situation.
The Gadaliyaa families living in Tharad have pucca houses. They asked for grains in relief but, since they stay in proper homes, we refused, “there are others who need it more, your homes are not in water!!” we said.
The families have tremendous respect and faith in me, so did not counter my decision. This morning however, Ramabhai Gadaliya messaged me saying do see the video I have sent you. I felt angry on myself after watching the video clipping. How did I judge the situation so wrongly?? The Gadaliya are daily wage earners and the Tharad market where these people work are submerged in water. Unless it is not business as usual in these markets the Gadaliya families will not have money to buy food. The video told the fact. We sent enough grains to last a fortnight or more.
I felt the need to share it here so that we change our perception and definition of the affected.
પુરઅસરગ્રસ્ત કોને ગણવા તે પ્રશ્ન અત્યારે સૌને થાય ને તેમાંય ખાસ કરીને રીલીફ મટીરીયલ વહેંચવાવાળાને તો ખાસ. એમાં અમેય બાકાત ના રહ્યા. સેવાના કામોએ જુદી દાર્શિનીક શક્તિ આપી પણ એમાં થાપ ખવાઈ.
થરાદમાં ગાડલિયા પરિવારોના ઘરો પાકા. પુર પછી એમણે અનાજ માંગ્યું પણ તેઓ પાકા ઘરમાં રહે એટલે અમે ના પાડી અને ‘જરૃરિયાતવાળાને આપીશું, તમારાં ત્યાં પાણી નથી’ એમ કહ્યું.
મારા પર અપાર મમતા એટલે કશું બોલી ના શક્યા. પણ આજે સવારે રામાભાઈ ગાડલિયા દ્વારા બેન વોટસઅપ જોજોનો મેસેજ આવ્યો અને વોટ્સઅપ જોયું તો, કશું જ બોલ્યા વગર બધુ જ સમજાઈ ગયું. મને મારા પર ગુસ્સો આવ્યો અને હું આવું પૃથ્થકરણ કેમ કરતી થઈ ગઈ એવો પ્રશ્ન પણ થયો. ગાડલિયા જ્યાં કામ કરતા તે થરાદની બજાર પાણીથી ભરાયેલી. રોજ કામ કરીને રોજ ખાનારા આ પરિવારો છેલ્લા દસ દિવસથી ધંધો જ નથી કરી શક્યા અને ધંધો ના થવાના કારણે ઘરમાં ખાવા નથી.
વિડીઓએ બધુ જ સમજાવી દીધુ. પંદરથી સત્તર દિવસ ચાલે એટલું રાશન આપ્યું. આ વિગત આપણે આફતનો ભોગ બનેલાઓને કેવી રીતે જોઈએ છીએ એ દર્શાવવા જ ખાસ લખી.
