I was in Nanodar village to understand the conditions of the affected and get a better picture of the ground realities so as to frame our strategies for rehabilitation accordingly. The calmness and distress in the settlement suddenly became chaotic as two vehicles approached the village. Everyone from the settlement ran towards the cars. All I could hear was a child wailing somewhere in the settlement. The crying was so intense that I walked towards it to find a small girl rocking her younger sibling in a cradle made from an old clothing tied between two legs of a rickety charpoy. On inquiring about the wailing baby, I was told that the infant girl in the cradle was born during the floods, she was 8 days old and was crying because of hunger. Her mother was nowhere to be seen.  It was very unusual of the mother/women to leave her confines during the initial 40 days of delivery. Where could she have gone, living behind the infant in despair!?

“My mother has gone to get food, some vehicles just arrived with food!” said Payal, who was attending to her infant sister in absence of their mother.

I could not bear the constant crying of the infant, “go call your mother” I told her!!

“Ben, that lady needs food, so what if she has just delivered a child!” interrupted Iharabhai, who was standing beside me.

I couldn’t utter any further… I began walking away from the settlement towards the vehicles distributing food, the scene was disturbing and chaotic, people were climbing upon each other to get whatever landed on their hands.
We are hearing voices claiming that the affected families have received too much in aid and they don’t need anything more. However, based on my observations from the continuous visits I have had in the affected areas, these families will continue to need support for coming 3-4 months. Simply because they will not be getting work for coming 6 months. The farms have been washed off, it will be simply impossible to farm and grow there are no other means of earning livelihood in these regions. Until the farms do not become ready these families will need help. Apart from livelihood, these families have lost their homes and belongings. They will be starting everything from scratch. So, all we would like to say and appeal is please open your hearts and give as much as you can, if I could I would fill their stores with food and grains enough to last them 6 months.  These communities are not beggars so please don’t judge them so. They have felt the need to stretch their arms because once the immediate relief is over there is not help that will reach them. The road to rehabilitation is long and hard.

“Look at us, look at  our condition, if I don’t  eat how will I feed my child!!” said the mother of that wailing infant when I found and spoke to her……

નાળોદરગામના પુરઅસરગ્રસ્ત લોકો માટે શું થઈ શકે, તે સમજવા જવાનું થયું. વંચિતોના ઘરોમાં ફરી રહી હતી ત્યાં અચાનક બે ગાડીઓ ગામમાં આવી અને આખી વસાહતના લોકોએ તે તરફ દોડ મુકી.

ખાલી વસાહતમાં નાના બાળકનો સતત રડવાનો અવાજ આવ્યો. અવાજની દિશામાં ગઈ. નાની બહેન નવજાત શીશુને હીંચકાવી રહી હતી. વાત કરતા ખ્યાલ આવ્યો કે, પુરના પાણી ગામમાં હતા તે ટાણે જ ઘોડિયામાં સુતેલી આ દીકરીનો જન્મ થયેલો. એ આઠ દિવસની થઈ હતી. ભુખ લાગી હશે એટલે રડતી હશે. આમ તો એની મા એની પાસે જ હોવી જોઈએ. પણ એ નહોતી...

સુવાવડી આમ ઝટ ખાટલો ના છોડે. સવા મહિના લગી સ્થાઈ રહેનારા ખાટલો પાળે જ. ત્યારે આની મા ક્યાં ગઈ? ત્યાં હીંચકો નાખતી પાયલે કહ્યું, ‘ગોમમાં ગાડી આઈ તે મમ્મી ખાવાનું લેવા ગઈ...’

ખાટલાની ઈંસ સાથે બાંધેલા કપડાંમાંથી બનાવેલા ઘોડિયામાં સુતેલી દીકરી સતત રડ્યા કરે. જીવ બળ્યો. મે કહ્યું, ‘જા તારી માને બોલાવી લાવ.’ પણ ત્યાં મારી સાથે ઊભેલા ઈહરાભાઈએ કહ્યું, ‘બેન હુવાવડીનેય ખાવા તો જોવન...’ કશું બોલવાનું જ નહોતું.

વસાહતમાંથી નીકળી અને ગામના પાધરે થતા વિતરણ તરફ ગઈ. લોકો જે મળે તે લેવા રીતસર પડા પડી કરી રહ્યા હતા.

લોકો કહે છે કે, ખુબ આવ્યું, લોકોને ખુબ મળ્યું, હવે જરૃર નથી. પણ મારા મતે આ લોકોને આગળના બે – ચાર મહિના ક્યાંક કામ મળવાનું નથી. ગામના વંચિતની જ આ વાત નથી સૌની વાત છે. ખેતરો ધોવાયા છે. ખેતી થશે નહીં અને અહીંયા બીજી કોઈ મજુરીએ ક્યાં છે. બધુ રાબેતા મુજબ તો ખેતીની સિઝન શરૃ થાય ત્યારે થશે. પણ એ હાલના સંજોગોમાં અસરગ્રસ્ત ગામોમાં થવાનું નથી. પાછુ પડ્યા પર પાટુ જેવું, ઘર ભાંગી ગ્યા છે. ક્યાંક તો ઘરનું અસ્તિત્વ જ નથી રહ્યું. બધુ ફેર બેઠુ કરવાનું.

અમારે એટલું જ કહેવું છે કે, કોઈ જ શંકા વગર આપો.. આમ તો મારુ ચાલે તો છ મહિના ચાલે એટલું ભરી આપું આ બધાને... આફત આ લોકોને માંગણ બનાવી ગઈ.

પેલી દીકરીની મા મળી એણે કહ્યું, ‘ખઈશ નઈ તો ધવરાઈશ ચમના... અન અમારી હાલત તો જુઓ ચેવા પડ્યા સીએ...’

આગળ કશું લખવું નથી... પણ સ્વમાનપૂર્ણ રીતે પરિવારજનોને બેઠા કરીએ.
