“Ben, by marrying off two of my daughters today and assigning one in your care, I have fulfilled my promise given to you. I have no worries. Even death  does not scare me now.”  Rameshbhai’s eyes welled up as he talked to me today at his daughter Krishna’s marriage ceremony.

Vadia, a village whose traditional occupation is absolutely unaccepted seldom treats its daughters with respect and care, but once the daughter is married or engaged she is never forced into the hellish traditional occupation of prostitution.

Rameshbhai had promised me to never force his daughters into prostitution when he first met me in 2005. I had the right to correct him because he considers me  his sister.

The pimps active in Vadia tried their level best to lure Rameshbhai into the trap, but he remained undeterred like a  rock. Both his kidneys failed, the medications pushed him to the brink of survival. VSSM’s Shardaben and his elder brother Bababhai worked tirelessly to bring him to Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital and get his kidney transplanted. Right now, he is on medication that is taken managed  by VSSM’s President Shri Madhavbhai  Ramanuj.

Apart from the physical trauma due to such life threatening ailment Rameshbhai also passed through severe mental trauma, but even under such dire circumstances he remained undeterred in his commitment to protect his daughters and ensured they get  married.

The ceremony wouldn’t have been possible without the support of VSSM’s largehearted family. The entire expense of the wedding ceremony was supported by respected Shri Morari Bapu. The kitchenware in the trousseau has been gifted by Shri Somabhai Patel. We have provided all that you can see in the pictures to Krishna and Kalpana. Apart from this,  to help them earn and live with dignity we have committed a buffalo each to both of them.

The Sarpanch of Khanpur Shri Nagjibhai has been assigned with the responsibility of finding a good buffalos. The costs of buffalo are very high currently hence, we plan to purchase them once the prices come down.

I am grateful to all those who stood with us and have wished well for Vadia.

Respected Bapu, all of these wouldn’t have been possible without your support. I am grateful for your support.

Shardaben, our backbone for Vadia who constantly worries for the community needs to be commended for her untiring efforts in Vadia.

Rameshbhai, I respect your commitment to fulfil the promise you gave me. I wish that each girl in Vadia is blessed with a father who shares your sentiments!!

'બેન મે આપેલું વચન આજે પૂરું કર્યું. મારી બે દીકરી પરણાવી અને એક તમને સોંપી. હવે હાલ મોત આવે તોય મને ચિંતા નથી '

વાડિયાના રમેશભાઈ સરાણિયાની આંખો આજે દીકરી ક્રિષ્ના ના લગન વખતે આ કહેતા કહેતા ભરાઈ આવી.

વાડિયા જ્યાની પરંપરા દીકરીઓ માટે ક્યારેક ના સ્વીકારાય એવી. દેહવ્યાપારના કલંક ગામની દીકરીઓના માથે લખાતા હોય એવા વાડિયામાં જે દીકરીની એક વખત લગ્ન કે સગાઈ થાય એ ક્યારેય આવા નર્કમાં ધકેલાતી નથી.

રમેશભાઈને ૨૦૦૫ માં મળેલી અને એ વખતે જ એમણે પોતાની દીકરીઓને આ નર્કાગાર માં નહિ ધકેલવાનું વચન આપેલું. મને બહેન માને એટલે થોડા વિશેષ અધિકાર ભાવ પણ બંને તરફ હોય... પણ છેવટે તો બધુંયે હકારાત્મક.

કેવી લાલચો સામે આવી પણ એ બધાને એમણે ઠોકર મારી.

બે કિડની બગડી. દવામાં ખૂબ ખર્ચ થયો. Vssm ના કાર્યકર શારદાબેન અને મોટાભાઈ બાબા ભાઈ સાથે રમેશભાઈ ને માંડ કિડની હોસ્પિટલ લાવ્યા અને કિડની ટ્રાન્સપ્લાન્ટ કરાવ્યું. હાલે દવા ચાલે પણ દવાનું બધું vssm ના પ્રમુખ માધવભાઇ રામાનુજ સાચવે. 

આર્થિક રીતે કમર તૂટી ગયેલી. ત્યારેય આવેલી લાલચોથી એ પર રહ્યા અને ખરા અર્થમાં એમણે દીકરીના બાપને છાજે એમ દીકરીઓને સંસાર મંડાવ્યા.

લગ્ન ખર્ચમાં સહયોગ પૂજ્ય મોરારી બાપુ એ આપ્યો. દીકરીને ભેટમાં વાસણ માટે સોમાભાઈ પટેલ સહયોગ આપ્યો. તેમનો આભાર વ્યક્ત કરું છું. દીકરી ક્રિષ્ના અને કલ્પનાને લગનમાં ફોટોમાં દેખાય છે એ સાધન સામગ્રી તો આપી. સાથે બેય દીકરીઓ સાસરીમાં સ્વમાનભેર જીવી શકે એ માટે બેયને ભેંસ આપવાનું વચન પણ આપ્યું.

ખાનપુરના સરપંચ નાગજી ભાઈને ભેંસ લાવવાની જવાબદારી સોંપી. હાલ ભેંસોની કિંમત વધારે છે ઓછી થતાં જ બેય દીકરીના ઘરે ભેંસ બંધાશે.

વાડિયા માં બદલાવ માટે મથતા સૌ સ્વજનો પાસે આજે રાજીપો વ્યક્ત કરું છું.

પૂજય બાપુ નો આભાર માનું છું એમની મદદ વગર આ બધું અસંભવ હતું...

અમારા કાર્યકર શારદાબેન સતત વાડિયા માં રહેતા માણસોની ચિંતા સેવે અને એમને મદદ કરે એમની લાગણી ને પ્રણામ.

અને રમેશભાઈ તમે ભાઈ તરીકે આપેલું વચન નિભાવ્યું એનો આનંદ.. સાથે વાડિયા ની તમામ દીકરીના બાપ તમારા જેવા થાય એવી આશા રાખું છું.

I was on my way to monitor the ongoing water management works at Rampura. En route to  Rampura falls Sutharnesdi, the thought of  Kaluba crossed our mind and we decided to stop at Sutharnesdi to meet her. The families of Sutharnesdi had struggled very hard to obtain the proofs of their existence, their citizenry documents. They were just three families but no-one seemed to  inclined to ensure they received those documents. VSSM’s Naran had worked on campaign mode to  ensure these families receive documentary proofs of their existence. Consequently, they received Voter ID cards and  Ration cards too. “We no longer wish to sing lullabies, please give us loan to help us start some new occupation,” they had requested. Eventually, we sanctioned Rs. 5000 each to help both the sons of Kaluba buy bicycle to start selling cosmetics and hair accessories.

Life is a little easier for them now. We have also filed their  applications for obtaining residential plots from government. The Bharthari never featured on the official list of nomadic and de-notified communities. As a result of VSSM’s extensive advocacy,  the government officials did consider and included Bharthari as well as numerous other communities we had suggested into the official list. This community can now expect to obtain plots and assistance from the government. It is pertinent that  now their life changes for better and these families are determined to make that happen.

“It is because of you we are able to stay here, you are well aware that Bhartharis aren’t blessed to lead such good life!!” Kaluba shared when we stopped to meet her.

It is an incredible feeling to learn  that our existence has brought so much peace and happiness into someone else’s life. Today, there are thousands of individual who feel the same as Kaluba. We are grateful to have been given this opportunity to be helpful to so many.

However, it is crucial that we spot for families like these and make concrete plans  to ensure they are given residential plots. We have presented these to the administration and are hopeful they will plan diligently.

રામપુરામાં થઈ રહેલા જળ વ્યવસ્થાપનના કામો જોવા જતી હતી અને વચમાં સુથારનેસડી આવ્યું. નારણે કાળુ બા ભરથરીને યાદ કર્યો અને અમે ત્યાં થંભ્યા.

પોતાની ઓળખનો આધાર મેળવવા આ પરિવારોએ ઘણો સંઘર્ષ કર્યો હતો. 

ત્રણ જ પરિવાર છતાં કોઈની એના પર નજર જ નહોતી પડી. 

કાર્યકર નારણે એમને નાગરિકત્વ અપાવાની ઝૂંબેશ હાથ ધરી ને મતદારકાર્ડના ફોર્મ ભરાયા. એ પછી તો રાશનકાર્ડ પણ થાય ને હવે રાવણહથ્થો લઈને હાલરડા નથી ગાવા તમે લોન આપો એવી વિનંતી સામે શૃંગારપ્રસાધનો, બોરીયા - બકલ વેચવા સાયકલ અને થોડો સામાન ખરીદવા 5000 -5000ની લોન કાળુ બાના બે દિકરાને આપી.

જીંદગી પહેલા કરતા સરળ થઈ છે. 

રહેવા કાયમી જમીન મળે એ માટે અરજી કરી છે. ભરથરીનો સમાવેશ વિચરતી જાતિની યાદીમાં નહોતો એટલે પ્લોટ મેળવા મુશ્કેલ જણાતા હતા પણ 2017માં VSSMના પ્રયત્નોથી ભરથરીનો સમાવેશ વિચરતી જાતિમાં થયો છે એટલે ઘર તો થવાના. હવે જીવન બહેતર થાય એ વધુ જરૃરી છે. એ માટે એમણે કમર કસી છે.

કાળુ બા મળ્યા અને એમણે કહ્યું, 'તમે બધા હોવને અમે અહીંયા રહી હકીએ બાકી અમારે આવુ રૃડૃ રહેવાનું શાને હોય?'

આપણા હોવાથી કોઈને સંતોષ થાય એ વાત જ અનેરી છે. આજે હજારો માણસો છે જેમની લાગણી કાળુ બા જેવી જ છે... 

કુદરતે નિમિત્ત બનાવ્યા અનો રાજીપો છે...

પણ હવે આવા પરિવારોને શોધીને તેમને રહેવા લાયક યોગ્ય જગ્યાઓ મળે તે અંગે સચોટ આયોજન થાય એ જરૃરી છે. 

વહીવટીતંત્રમાં રજૂઆતો કરી છે નક્કર થશે એવી આશા છે...

“The lake in our village was excavated during the great famine of Gujarat after which,  no one has really cared for it. Our village depends on the water this lake provides. But no none has really bothered to nourish it. If we repair and deepen the lake it will hold more water and the farmers will benefit from it!!”

Rampura’s Dharmeshbhai had joy in his tone when he mentioned this when we shared that VSSM will soon initiate the water conservation work in Rampura.

As part of the implementation strategy, VSSM makes it very clear from the beginning that the work will happen only if the village panchayat and leaders are willing to cooperate and contribute to the mammoth task of deepening the village lakes. We have had mixed experiences. Some villages have been extremely enthusiastic and supportive while some had to be dropped  half way through.

Rampura is a remote village from  Banaskantha’s Sui block. The landscape is dry and harsh. As the waters of Narmada reach this village, some farmers have made use of it and occasional green spots could be  noticed through the landscape. The villagers were willing to contribute in their own way to this task. Hence, we have decided to deepen at 5-6 villages in Rampura.

The support for this huge task is provided by Shri Bhanuben Shah,  who is currently  based in Mumbai.

The villagers of Rampura agree that the village receives a lot of water during the monsoon but it just gets drained as there is no means of conservation. Once the lakes are deepened the water will seep-in and benefit the entire village.

Of course the village will benefit,  so will this earth and its habitants. A task that began with one village is gradually spreading through the entire district with more and more villages joining in.

'અમાર ગોમનું તળાવ પચીહો કાળ પડ્યો તે વખતે ખંદાયેલું એ પછી કોઈએ તળાવની ભાળ જ કાઢી નઈ. ગોમમાં પોણીનો મોટો આશરો તળાવ જ. તળાવ ખંદાય અન હરખુ પોણી રેતો આખા ગોમના ખેડૂન ઘણો ફાયદો થાય.'

રામપુરાના ધર્મેશભાઈએ તળાવ ખોદાવવાની બાબતે હરખ વ્યક્ત કરતા આ વાત કરેલી.

ગામલોકોનો સહયોગ મળે તોજ તળાવ ગાળશું એવું દરેક ગામના તળાવ ખોદાવતી વખતે કહીએ. ઘણા ગામોમાં ખુબ સહયોગ મળે ને ઘણામાં અમારે કામ અઘુરુ મુકીને નીકળી જવું પડે.

#સૂઈગામ તાલુકાનું અંતરિયાળગામ એટલે #રામપુરા. વિસ્તાર સૂકો. હા કેટલાક ખેડૂત નર્મદા કેનાલનું પાણી લાવ્યા છે એટલે જરા હરિયાળુ લાગે બાકી સૂકો ભઠ્ઠ વિસ્તાર.છતાં ગામલોકો પોતાની રીતે મદદ કરવા તૈયાર. આ ગામના પાંચ થી છ તળાવ ઊંડા કરવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું છે.

મુંબઈના શ્રી ભાનુબહેન શાહ મુખ્ય મદદ કરવાના છે.

એ સિવાય સરકાર, ગામલોકોનો ફાળો પણ મહત્વનો રહેશે.

રામપુરાના લોકો કહે છે કે, ચોમાસામાં ઉપર વાસથી અમારા ગામમાં ઘણું પાણી આવે પણ તળાવ ઊંડા નથી એટલે પાણી વહી જાય છે. જો તળાવ ઊંડા થઈ જાય તો ઘણું પાણી એમાં સમાઈ જાય ને ગામને ફાયદો થાય.

ગામને ફાયદો થાય, ધરતી માતાને અને સમગ્ર જીવસૃષ્ટિને ફાયદો થાય તેવા આશય સાથે આરંભેલા આ કામમાં ધીમે ધીમે લોકો અને ગામો જોડાઈ રહ્યા છે...

Have you known the pain of living along the road sides with young daughters in the family?? Perhaps not. The privileged us who live within the safe confines of a house will be unable to empathise with the struggle of such parents who raise their families on streets. Inspite of spending so many years amidst the nomadic and de-notified communities, I had  never sensed it either. However, the recent episode of municipal authorities demolishing homes of families living in a ghetto near Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati locality exposed me to a whole new reality. It was the plight of wailing mother who was compelled  to live on the footpath as a result of this demolishment that brought to light the reality. The mother had narrated how she and her husband took turns to stay up at night to look after their daughters as they slept through the night. It shook my core.

Somewhere on Nandasan road along the Ahmedabad- Mehsana highway is a settlement of Meer families. The living condition of these families is extremely pitiable. The government did allot residential plots to few families, but many still live under severely  deprived conditions. When I recently met them they too raised the issue of security of their young daughter.

The changing land dynamics have sucked away all the government wastelands in many regions across Gujarat. It was on such  wastelands that these families build their settlements. Now the land grabbers are eyeing on such wastelands and claiming their right on it. The families have no choice but to take shelter on the footpaths or streets.  

It is essential these families access their right to shelter. We are awaiting the sanctions for the applications filed  for the same.

These families look up to us for fulfilment of their hopes, we truly want their longing  turns  into reality. Our role is to keep working at it and we will continue striving.

જુવાન દીકરીઓ સાથે આમ સાવ રોડની બાજુમાં રહેવાનું દુઃખ તમને ખબર છે?

આ પ્રશ્ન પાકા ઘરમાં અને એ પણ સુરક્ષીત જગ્યામાં રહેનારને ક્યારે નહીં સમજાય. મનેય નહોતો સમજાયો.

વર્ષો વિચરતી જાતિઓ વચ્ચે રહી એમની સાથે કામ કર્યું પણ પહેલીવાર સાબરમતીના છાપરાં તુટ્યાને રડતાં રડતાં એક માએ જ્યારે રોડ પર રહેતા હોવાના લીધે દીકરીઓની સુરક્ષાને લઈને રાતના ઊંધવામાં મા- બાપ બેય વારા કરેની વાત કરી ત્યારે અંદરથી હલી ગઈ હતી.

અમદાવાદ મહેસાણા હાઈવે પર નંદાસણ રોડ પર મીર પરિવારો રહે એ લોકોની દશા પણ ભયંકર ખરાબ. સરકારે કેટલાક પરિવારોને રહેણાંક અર્થે જગ્યા આપી જ્યારે કેટલાક હજુ આમ જ રોડ પર છે.

જ્યારે એમને મળી ત્યારે એમણે પણ સાબરમતીની પેલી માની જેમ જ દિકરીઓની ચિંતાનો પ્રશ્ન ઉઠાવ્યો.

પહેલાં ગામડાંઓમાં જગ્યાઓ ખુલ્લી રહેતી જ્યાં વિચરતી જાતિઓ છાપરાં નાખી શકતી પણ હવે સૌના જીવ ટૂંકા થયા છે. સરકારની જમીન પર પણ સૌ પોતાનો હક દાવો નોંધાવી રહ્યા છે આવામાં ફૂટપાથ કે રોડની બાજુમાં છાપરાંના નાખવા સિવાય આ પરિવારો પાસે વિકલ્પો બચતા નથી.

રહેણાંકનો અધિકાર આ પરિવારોને મળે એ ઈચ્છનીય છે..

અરજીઓ તો કરી છે જોઈએ નિકાલ ક્યારે થાય છે...

ખબર નહીં આ બધા પરિવારો એક ઉમ્મીદ સાથે અમારી સામે જુએ છે એ ઉમ્મીદ પૂરી થશે કે કેમ?

ખેર અમારા હિસ્સે પ્રયત્નો છે અને એ પ્રયત્નો કરવા રહ્યા...

એ મા જેણે હસતા હસતા પોતાની કથની કહી પછી મારા ઘરનો ફોટો લો બેન એમ કહીને એની દિકરીઓ સાથે ફોટો પડાવ્યો.

Personally, whenever I am  in midst of  some severe challenges while working for the nomads I come here, talk to you all and draw your support and encouragement  from the  comments you write.

Some 5 month back, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation bulldozed the shanties located near Sabarmati’s Eicher Depot. When the members of our team and communities went to complain about it they were put behind the bars.

The members from Devipujak, Bajaniya and Vansfoda communities and I along with the team members had gone to meet the Commissioner and  other responsible officials. The disappointing response from the officials had  shattered me.  I remember an anguished Kokilaben Devipujak, who resided in the felled settlement sharing, “Ben, we have to stay on footpath now. During the nights we have to remain on vigil, we have our young daughters to worry about. What if someone took them away in the middle of night?” Even a thought of such unsecured living conditions had given me shivers.

I was crying my heart out when respected Bhagwankaka Panchal, I was in no condition to talk. “Can’t talk right now Kaka,” I had told and Kaka understood it all.

After the incident the commissioner changed and Shri Vijay Nehra was appointed as new commissiner. Shri Nehra is an amazing individual. Kaka and I went to meet him and briefed him about the incident.

He expressed regret over the incident and instructed his officials to make arrangements to ensure these families obtain houses as soon as possible.

We compiled the required documents for 47 families. VSSM’s Madhuben also obtained the missing documents. We prepared the files of all these families and submitted them in the Commissioner’s office. On 6th March 2019,  32 of the 47 families were on the basis of a draw  allotted 1BHK houses in Ahmedabad’s  Chandkheda suburb.

Shri Jadav Saheb, Shri Kamleshbhai and other officials from Municipal Commissioner’s Office in Usmanpura poured their heart and worked really hard to ensure these families receive the best houses and ensured speedy issuance of all the missing documents. We cannot thank them enough. All these tasks were accomplished in very little time.  

These families needed to make a payment of their share  for which we contacted Vikasti Jati Kalyan Board. We got in touch with Shri Vanzara who supported us with the applications.

Honestly, the joy of these families receiving houses have surpassed the emotional turmoil I had experienced when their homes were destroyed by the municipal corporation. We are still awaiting houses for the remaining 15 families. Hopefully, that too shall happen soon.

Shri Vijay Nehra, we will always remain grateful to you, it was your generosity that transformed into homes for these families. Hope more and more government offices have officials like you at its realm.

Shri Vanzara Saheb is someone we trust as our own, can’t thank him enough.

Bhagwankaka is a wonderful individual, he holds tremendous  compassion for the poor. ‘Don’t feel so dismal, we will find a way out!!” he would always give such calming assurances while doing all he can to solve the situation. It is a pleasure to have Kaka besides us.

Also, the patience portrayed by the families living near Eicher Depot  is truly commendable.

VSSM’s Madhuben hails from one of the nomadic communities, very  sharp personality with a fightitng streak. At the same time she can be very timid and mellow. Her constant worry is the families she works for. It was her efforts that paid off at the end. We are glad she is part our zealous team.

વ્યક્તિગત રીતે વિચરતી જાતિઓ સાથેના કામોમાં કોઈ તકલીફ પડે ત્યારે આ પેજ પર લખતી હોવું છું ને તમે બધા એ વખતે સાથે હોવાનું અને નિરાશ નહીં થવાનું કહેતા હોવ છો..

લગભગ પાંચેક મહિના પહેલાં સાબરમતી એચર ડેપો પાસે રહેતા પરિવારોના છાપરાં મ્યુનીસીપલ કોર્પોરેશને તોડ્યા હતા. રજૂઆત માટે અમારા કાર્યકરો ને વસાહતના લોકો ગયા તો તેમને ઉપાડીને એ વખતે જેલમાં પુરી દીધેલા.

એ વખતના કમીશનર અને અધિકારીઓને મળવા અમે દેવીપૂજક, બજાણિયા તેમજ વાંસફોડા પરિવારના લોકો ગયા હતા. પણ અધિકારીના નિરાશાજનક જવાબથી માનસીક રીતે હું ભાંગી પડી હતી. વસાહતમાં રહેતા કોકીલાબહેન દેવીપૂજકે કહ્યું હતું, 'બેન સાવ ફૂટપાથ પર આવી ગયા છીએ. રાતના બહેન દીકરીઓની સુરક્ષા માટે જાગવાના અમે વારા કર્યા છે. સાવ ફૂટપાથ પર છીએ કોઈ મોંઢુ દબાવીને દીકરીને લઈ જાય તો...'

આવી અસુરક્ષીતતા વિચાર માત્રથી હૃદય દુઃખી થઈ ગયેલું.

ખુબ રડતી હતી એ વખતે જ આદરણીય ભગવાનકાકા પંચાલનો ફોન આવ્યો. વાત કરી શકુ એ હાલતમાં હું નહોતી. મે કહેલું કાક હાલ વાત નહીં કરી શકુ ... ને કાકા બધુ સમજી ગયા..

એ પછી કમીશનર બદલાયા ને નવા કમીશનર શ્રી વિજય નહેરા આવ્યા. શ્રી નહેરા અદભૂત માણસ. કાકા અને હું નહેરાસાહેબને મળ્યા. બધી વાત કરી.

એમણે તુરત જ આ આખી ઘટના પ્રત્યે દુઃખ વ્યક્ત કર્યું ને આ પરિવારોને ઝટ ઘર મળે એ માટે વહીવટીતંત્રને સૂચના આપી.

કુલ 47 પરિવારોના જોઈતા પુરાવા અમે ભેગા કર્યા. કેટલાક ખુટતા પુરાવા બનાવવાનું પણ VSSMના કાર્યકર મધુબહેને કર્યું.

આ બધુ તૈયાર કરીને કમીશનર ઓફીસ જમા કરાવ્યું ને તા.6 માર્ચ 2019ના રોજ 47માંથી 32 પરિવારોને ડ્રો દ્વારા એક બેડરૃમ,ડ્રાઈગરૃમ, રસોડા સાથેનું ઘર ચાંદખેડામાં આપવામાં આવ્યું.

મ્યુનીસીપલ કમીશનર કચેરી ઉષ્માનપુરાના અધિકારી શ્રી જાદવ સાહેબ, કમલેશભાઈ વગેરે અધિકારી ગણે ખુબ પ્રેમથી આ પરિવારોને સારામાં સારુ ઘર મળે તે માટે તજવીજ કરી ને જોઈતા તમામ પુરાવા એકઠા કરવામાં મદદ પણ કરી. તેમનો આભાર માનીએ એટલો ઓછો. તેમણે ખુબ ઓછા સમયમાં આ કામ પૂર્ણ કર્યું.

આ પરિવારોને મકાન મેળવવા પોતાનો હિસ્સો ભરવો પડે. આ હિસ્સો ભરવા અમેે વિકસતી જાતિ કલ્યાણ ખાતામાં રજૂઆત કરી. અને એ માટે સચીવ શ્રી વણઝારા સાહેબ મદદ કરી.

ટૂંકમાં કહુ તો જે માનસીક પરિતાપ આ પરિવારોના ઝૂંપડાં તૂટ્યા ત્યારે થયો હતો આજે અનેક ઘણી ખુશી આ પરિવારોને ઘર મળતા થઈ છે.

હજુ 15 પરિવારોને ઘર મળે તે માટે કોશીશ કરવાની છે અને એ પણ થશે એવી આશા છે.

આ તબક્કે કમીશનર શ્રી વિજય નહેરાનો આભાર માનવો ઘટે તેમના જેવી ઉદારતાના લીધે જ આ થઈ શક્યું. સાથે તમારા જેવા અધિકારીઓ દરેક જગ્યા પર હોય તેવું ઈચ્છીએ જેથી દરેક ગરીબને તેના હકનું મળે.

આદરણીય વણઝારા સાહેબનો આભાર માનીએ એટલો ઓછો...તેઓ તો અમારા પોતિકા છે.

જ્યારે ભગવાન કાકા સાવ નોખા માણસ. ગરીબો માટે ભારોભર અનુકંપા. દુઃખી ના થા રસ્તો નીકળશે તેવો હૈયાહરો પણ આપે ને કામ કરાવવામાં મદદ પણ કરે. કાકા તમે અમારી સાથે છો એનો આનંદ...

સાથે જ એચર ડેપો પાસે રહેતા વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારોની ધીરજને પણ દાદ દેવી પડે.

કાર્યકર મધુબહેન વિચરતીજાતિમાંના જ એક. બહુ બાહોશ, લડાકુ પણ મનથી રુજુ. શું થશે એવી સતત ચિંતા કરે અને દિવસ રાત જોયા વગર આ પરિવારો માટે મથ્યા કરે. તેમની મહેનત ફળી. મધુબહેન જેવા પાયાના કાર્યકરો અમારી સાથે છે એટલે જ આ બધુ થઈ શકે છે મધબહેન સાથે છો એનો આનંદ અને ખુબ પ્રેમ પણ....

છાપરાં તુટયાની પછીની રજૂઆત ને પોલીસ પકડીને લઈ ગઈ એ દુઃખદ દોર ફોટોમાં તથા ઘર આપવા માટેનો ડ્રો મ્યુનીસીપલ કમીશનર કચેરી ઉષ્માનપુરા દ્વારા કરવામાં આવ્યો તે વખતે ડ્રો દ્વારા ઘર ફાળવતા અધિકારી ગણ સાથે સંસ્થાની ટીમ આ બધુ જ કેમેરાની નજરે.. તમે પણ ખુશીમાં સહભાગી બનો માટે આ ઘડી તમારી સાથે વહેંચી..

“The  floods took along everything we owned, not even a spoon was spared. VSSM helped me through the extremely difficult times, you advised me to  give up the habit of eating gutka and transformed my life for better. There was a time I felt how will I ever overcome such hard times, how will I survive? But look at me now, I am capable of giving employment to 5-7 people!” This  statement always comes forth when we think about Umri’s Lalabhai Raval, a person who personifies hard work humility and generosity.

We have shared Lalabhai’s story earlier on how after the devastating floods of 2017, VSSM supported Lalabhai with an interest free loan and that combined with his vision Lalabhai rebuild his life from scratch.

Within a span of 1.5 years, Lalabhai now owns 55 cattle. He sells milk worth Rs. 1.5 lakhs and his life has changed only for better. His hard work and  compassion is further reflected in his generosity towards others. Lalabhai makes  a monthly donation of Rs. 2000 to VSSM so that more individuals like him can be helped.  He is now an inspiration to others.

Individuals like Lalabhai are a blessing to the society and their inspiring deeds should be honoured and  stories need to  be told to the society. 

On 25th March, 2019, in a program organised to honour and appriciate the individuals who have been part of the Swavlamban program,  we felicitated  Lalabhai with a congratulatory letter and cash of Rs. 5000. However, the person that he is Lalabhai added Rs. 500 to the amount and  returned the cash amount to VSSM.

As Lalabhai becomes a role model for Swavlamban beneficiaries, we received numerous calls fter the program, saying “we too want to be like Lalabhai!” May these wishes come true is what we hope.  

It is Kanubhai who introduced us to Lalabhai and  Naran who constantly thinks about these families.

#બનાસકાંઠાના ઉમરીમાં રહે, એમનું એક વાક્ય બરાબર યાદ રહે, 

'2017ના પુરમાં મારુ બધીયે તણાઈ ગયું. એક ચમચી પણ નહોતી બચી. પણ સંસ્થાની મદદ અને પડીકી ખાવાની આદત તમે કહીને મે છોડી એ પછી મારા જીવનમાં ઘણો સુધાર આવી ગયો. એક સમય હતો જ્યારે મને થતું તું કે હું શું કરીશ, કેવી રીતે જીવીશ અને અત્યારે હું પાંચ, સાત માણસોને કામ આપી શકુ એવી ક્ષમતા ધરાવું છું.'

લાલાભાઈની આખી વાત ફેસબુકના આ પેજ પર પહેલાં લખી છે એટલે વધુ વાત નથી કરતી. પણ સંસ્થામાંથી મળેલી લોને એમને હિંમત આપી ને પોતાની કોઠાસૂઝ તો હતી જ.

દોઢ જ વર્ષમાં લાલાભાઈ 55 નાના મોટા ઢોરનો માલીક બની ગયા. મહિને દોઢ લાખનું દૂધ ભરાવતા થઈ ગયા. 

જીવન સાવ બદલાઈ ગયું. આજે લાલાભાઈ બધા માટે ઉદાહરણરૃપ બની ગયા.

આવા લાલાભાઈનું તા. 25 માર્ચના રોજ VSSMમાંથી લોન લઈને બે પાંદડે થયા હોય તેવા તેમજ સંસ્થાને નિયમિત ધર્માધુ એટલે કે અનુદાન આપતા હોય તે કેટેગરીમાં સન્માન કરવામાં આવ્યું. 

લાલાભાઈને અભીવાદન પત્રની સાથે રૃા. 5000 નો કેસ એવોર્ડ પણ આપવામાં આવ્યો. પણ લાલાભાઈએ એ કેસની રકમમાં બીજા 500 ઉમેરી સંસ્થાને પરત આપ્યા.

પેલું વિધાન મારાથીયે ગરીબને મદદ કરજોની વાત તેઓ બરાબર કહે છે.

આવા લાલાભાઈનો પુર પછી પરિચય કરાવનાર કનુભાઈ સંસ્થાના અચ્છા શુભેચ્છક..

કાર્યકર નારણની આ બધા પરિવારો માટે ચિંતા તો મોખરે...

Mittal Patel discusses Water Management with the villagers

“Ben, when will you deepen the lake in our village?”

This was one constant question that Bhanabhai, the Sarpanch of Makhanu village and Ashokbhai, a young journalist from the village would keep asking VSSM’s Naran and me over the phone. They never stopped following up.

“We too want to do that and will do that but can we first discuss about the contribution the villagers are prepared to make?” we would respond.

“Ben, it is difficult for make people contribute for such works, but we shall definitely do something, can you first begin deepening the lake?” Bhanabhai would respond.

Respecting Bhanabhai’s statement and commitment we decided to begin the work of deepening and desilting the lake at Makhanu village and talk to the villagers on the matter of community contribution. The meeting was held over the hardly existent lake and the first to contribute was Bhanabhai Sarpanch, the villagers followed giving as much as they could. Apart from VSSM and the community we also received government’s contribution for the mentioned task. Although we would have loved the villagers to be more giving towards such work that is for the betterment of the entire community. We all acknowledge the fat that as a society we become more giving when it comes to building places of worship, however the same generosity is never reflected in works that are for the society in general. We depend on our lakes/water bodies and tree/forests, yet we hardly care about them. This is a bitter truth we at VSSM deal with every day.

We have envisaged a green and water sufficient Banaskantha, we are committed to realise that and that is why we will take the liberty of expecting the people of Banaskantha to be more giving.

The lake we were to deepen and desilt was encroached upon and filled up. However, the persistence the Bhalabhai and Ashokbhai showed needs to be applauded at this juncture.

'બેન અમારા ગામનું તળાવ ક્યારે ગાળશો?'

આ વિધાન સાથે મખાણુંગામના #સરપંચ ભાણાભાઈ અને ગામના યુવા પત્રકાર અશોકભાઈના ઢગલો ફોન કાર્યકર નારણ અને મારા પર આવ્યા કરે.

અમે કહેતા કે, 'તળાવ તો અમારેય ગાળવું છે પણ એ પહેલાં ગામલોકો પોતે પણ ફાળો આપે.'

સરપંચ કહે, 'ગુંજામોંથી ધર્માદા કોમ હાતર પૈસા કઢાવવા તો અઘરા. પણ કોક કરશું બેન તમે તળાવનું કોમ એક ફેરા શરૃ તો કરાવો.'

સરપંચના એ વિધાન પર અમે તળાવનું કામ શરૃ કરાવ્યું અને મખાણું ગામના લોકોને ભેગા કરીને ફાળાની વાત કરવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું. ગામલોકો તળાવમાં જ ભેગા થયા સરપંચે પોતાનું અનુદાન પ્રથમ આપ્યું ને પછી તો ગામના સૌએ પોતાનાથી શક્ય આપ્યું.

જે #તળાવ અમે ગાળવાનું શરૃ કર્તયું તે તળાવમાં દબાણ થઈ ગયેલું, તળાવ પણ પુરાઈ ગયેલું. આ તળાવ ગાળવામાં ગામનો ફાળો, vssmનો ફાળો અને સરકારની પણ મદદ મળી.

જો કે ગામલોકો વધુ ફાળો આપે તેવી અપેક્ષા છે પણ મંદિર બાંધવા આપણે જેટલી લાગણી બતાવીએ એટલી તળાવ માટે નથી. એ કડવી વાસ્તવીકતા છે. તળાવ એ આપણો આધાર છે પણ લોકોને એની ચિંતા નથી..

ખેર અમે એમ કાંઈ મુકવાના નથી. બનાસકાંઠાને હરિયાળુ પાણીથી ભરપુર બનાવવાનો સંકલ્પ છે તે ગામલોકો પર થોડો અધિકારભાવ પણ જતાડવો પડશે....

પણ #બનાસકાંઠાના સૌ લોકો સહયોગ આપે એવી અપેક્ષા પણ રાખુ છું....

બાકી #મખાણું ગામના લોકો, સરપંચ શ્રી ભાણાભાઈ તથા અશોકભાઈને તો પ્રણામ કરવા ઘટે.

VSSM’s  work has spanned across numerous  regions of Gujarat,  but the region of  Banaskantha is growing up on us. So much so that we  have begun dreaming about it differently… some of our dreams are….

The ground water table of Banaskatha rises to what it was and to achieve this deepen and desilt the village lakes in partnership of the rural communities…

Plant and raise as many trees possible to change the face of otherwise dry and patchy looking regions, trees will help bring rains too…

Concentrate our efforts to ensure  that the marginalised  families of this district obtain a decent roof over their head..

These are the dreams we have for Banaskantha. Dreams that can only be realised when the people of the region own them up and come together to work for it. As a result of our ongoing work in the region we have been working with the youth of Tharad. It was during one of the interactions that we shared our dreams with them. If there is a will and desire to bring in a change, it is not a difficult dream to realise for the youth in this region. The young man we met have showed their willingness,  what we await is how they act upon it. 

The current condition of Banaskantha is itself a wakeup call, it is time we put our class, caste and political differences aside and begin working towards a greener and flourishing Banaskantha. We need to organise ourselves, begin holding regular meeting and gear up before the onset of monsoon.

We call upon the youth of Banaskantha to think  ahead and move forward, the time is now…

બનાસકાંઠા સાથે એક જુદો નાતો બંધાઈ ગયો છે.

આમ તો કામ ઘણા જિલ્લાઓમાં કરીએ પણ બનાસકાંઠાને લઈને થોડા વિશેષ સ્વપ્નો જોવા માંડ્યા છીએ. આ સપનાંઓમાંનું

પહેલું - ભૂગર્ભજળના તળ ઊંચા લાવવા અને એ માટે ગામે ગામ ગામલોકોની સહભાગીતાથી તળાવો ગાળવા 

બીજું - વૃક્ષ વાવો વરસાદ લાવો.. બનાસકાંઠાેનો ઘણો ભાગ સૂકો એટલે વરસાદ માટે વૃક્ષોનું અનાજની જેમ વાવેતર કરવું

ત્રીજું - ગામોમાં રહેતા તમામ વંચિતોને માથુ ઢાંકવા પોતાની છત મળે એ માટે કોશીશ કરવી.

આ ત્રણ સપનાઓ ગામના દરેક સજ્જ થાય તો જ શક્ય. અમે એ દિશામાં કામ કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.

બનાસકાંઠાના થરાદ વિસ્તારના કેટલાક યુવાનો સાથે કામના કારણે પરિચય થયો. જોયેલા સપનાઓ અંગે એમની સાથે વાત થઈ. 

આ અને એમના જેવા દરેક ગામના યુવાનો તથા જેમને પોતાના ગામને હરિયાળુ બનાવવાની જીજીવિષા છે એવા તમામ સજ્જ થાય તો આ કામ અઘરુ નથી..આ યુવાનોએ તો તૈયારી દર્શાવી છે... હવે તેમની તૈયારી જોવાની છે...

નાત જાત, રાજકારણ ભૂલીને સૌ એક સાથે બેસવા તૈયાર થાય તો આ બધુ શક્ય નહીં તો...

સમય થઈ ગયો છે જાગવાનો...

બનાસકાંઠા તૈયાર થાય તો આ શક્ય... વિચારી દરેક તાલુકે બેઠકો કરવાનું આયોજન થાય તો ઘણું સુંદર કામ આ ચોમાસું બેસતા કરી શકાય. બેઠકો માટે વિચારીને આયોજન કરવા સૌને આહવાન...

Mittal Patel visits the nomadic families...

A month ago,  around  85 homes belonging to the nomadic families living in Rajkot’s Kubaliya were engulfed in a freak fire accident. The families barely managed to  to recuse themselves. Four days back  there was another episode of fire,  burning  shanties of 12 nomadic families living in Surendranagar’s Dudhrej. In both the incidents the  poor families lost all that there was to have and hold. The civil society showed tremendous empathy and stood with them in such trying times. However, what mattered was the support and concern of the  local administration during this period.

Honestly, we were expecting the administration of Rajkot to be really helpful,   but our expectations proved otherwise. After a long wait when no help came forward,  VSSM prepared relief kits consisting of ration for 15 days, vessels, tarpaulin, blankets etc and provided it to the families. This giveaway was supported by respected Shri Bhadrayubhai Vacchrajani of  Rajkot.

While in Surendranagar we were supported by its wise and illustrious citizens Madhviben, Truptiben and many more.. but what touched our core was the positive  approach of the district administration. The District Collector himself remained besides these families in their times of need. He called the affected families to his office and extended support of Rs. 12,000 each. He also remained committed to extend government’s support for those affected by such disasters, made arrangements for these families to stay in government shelter and initiated the process to ensure these families receive official residential plots and assistance to build a house.

Growing up I often read this story where the kings in disguise would  move amidst their  subjects to learn about their well-being and complaints.

Today I perceive  the collectors as kings of their districts. The administration acts as she/he wishes and the residents prosper or suffer based on the  decisions these modern kings take.  It  all boils down to their wish and approach.

I am not here to criticize anyone  but, it was the wish and desire of Shri K. Rajesh, Collector, Surendranagar that made all the difference. It was his large-heartedness and compassion that helped these poor and needy the  most. Shri K. Rajesh is also trying to ensure all the nomadic and de-notified families of Surendranagar receive plots and homes as soon as possible.

We are grateful for officers like Shri Rajesh who make sure to use the power bestowed upon them for the service and betterment of the needy. We are proud to have such dedicated and committed officials amidst us. Shri. Rajesh, we salute your compassion.

વાત અભીગમની...

મહિના પહેલાં રાજકોટના કુબલિયાપરામાં રહેતા વિચરતી જાતિના 85 પરિવારોના છાપરાંમાં અચાનક આગ લાગી ગઈ અને આ પરિવારો પોતાનો જીવ સિવાય કશું બચાવી ના શક્યા.

ચાર દિવસ પહેલાં સુરેન્દ્રનગરના દૂધરેજમાં પણ 12 પરિવારોના છાપરાંમાં અચાનક આગ લાગી ને બધુ બળીને ખાખ થઈ ગયું.

હાથે પગે આવી ગયેલા આ બેય જિલ્લાના પરિવારો પ્રત્યે સમાજમાંથી ઘણાએ કરુણા દાખવી પણ અગત્યનું જિલ્લા વહીવટીતંત્ર આ પરિવારોની પડખે ઊભુ રહે તે હતું.

રાજકોટ માટે તો શું કહુ... મદદની અપેક્ષા હતી પણ બધુ ઠગારુ નીવડ્યું. આખરે આ પરિવારોને પંદર દિવસ ચાલે એટલા રાશનની કીટ, વાસણ, ફરી ઝૂંપડું બાંધવા તારપોલીન, ધાબળા બધુએ VSSMએ પહોંચાડ્યું. જેમાં રાજકોટના આદરણીય ભદ્રાયુભાઈ વછરાજાનીએ મદદ કરી.

જ્યારે સુરેન્દ્રનગરમાં સુરેન્દ્રગરના પ્રબુદ્ધ નાગરિકો માધવીબેન, તૃપ્તીબેન વગેરે મદદમાં રહ્યા પણ સૌથી અગત્યનું કલેક્ટર પોતે આ પરિવારો માટે ખડે પગે રહ્યા. પોતાની કચેરીમાં બોલાવી વ્યક્તિગત ધોરણે દરેક પરિવારને રૃા.12,000ની મદદ કરી ઉપરાંત સરકારમાંથી આવી આફતનાે ભોગ બનનાર પરિવારોને જે મદદ મળે તે મદદ અપાવવા તેઓ કટીબદ્ધ થયા. સાથે સરકારી આશ્રયસ્થાનમાં તેમના રહેવાની વ્યવસ્થા કરી. વળી આ પરિવારોને પોતાની રહેણાંકની જગ્યા ને એના માથે પાકુ ઘર બંધાય એ માટેની તજવીજ તો એમણે આદરી જ દીધી ..

પોતાની પ્રજાની ચિંતા કરી તેમના સુખ દુઃખ જાણવા રાતના વેશપલટો કરી લોકોની વચમાં ફરે એ સાચો રાજા. આ બધુ નાનપણમાં વાંચેલું, સાંભળેલું. 

મોટી થયા પછી બધા કહે કલેક્ટર એ જિલ્લાનો રાજા. એ ધારે તો હજારો માણસોને થાળે પાડવાની તજવીજ કરી શકે. પણ બધુયે ધારવા ઉપર આધારીત.

“Bhai, were Paragon chappals, they will last long!”

“Saheb, when will we have electricity/power in our homes, with these frequent rounds to your office we have worn out numerous pairs of chappals!” Kanubhai Dantani very humbly  inquired about the status of their application to GEB official to which  he received  above mentioned response.

The Devipujak families of Meu village have been requesting for electricity connection to their homes for many years now. However, the officials insist that since their houses are on gauchar/grazing land  their applications will not be processed .

District Collector Shri Patel Saheb took interest and looked into the matter following VSSM’s request for power connection to the Devipujak families of Meu.

Atlast,  after the application file really grew fat and bulky did the houses of these families see light.

Our team members Tohid and Rizwan pursued the matter till the end to  ensure the huts of these 21 families receive power connection.

'ભઈ પેરાગોન ચંપલ પહેરો નહીં ધસાય..'

'સાહેબ લાઈટ ચાણ આવશે કચેરીના ધક્કા ખાઈ ખાઈન અમારા ચંપલ ઘસાઈ ગયા.' આવું જ્યારે મહેસાણાના મેઉ ગામના કનુભાઈ દંતાણીએ જીઈબીના અધિકારીને કહ્યું ત્યારે અધિકારીએ ઉપર મુજબ જવાબ આપ્યો.

વર્ષોથી મહેસાણાના મેઉ ગામમાં દેવીપૂજક પરિવારો રહે પણ એક પણ પરિવારના ઘરમાં લાઈટ નહીં. વર્ષોથી તેઓ રજૂઆત કરે પણ તમે ગૌચરની જગ્યામાં રહો છો માટે લાઈટ નહીં થાય તેવું અધિકારી કહે.

VSSM દ્વારા રજૂઆત કરવામાં આવતા કલેક્ટર શ્રી પટેલ સાહેબે પોતે રસ લઈને આ પરિવારોને લાઈટ અપાવવા જેહમત ઉઠાવી.

સંસ્થા દ્વારા લાઈટ માટે થયેલી રજૂઆતની ફાઈલ ઘણી જાડી થઈ ત્યારે જતાં લાઈટનું ઠેકાણું પડ્યું.

કાર્યકર તોહીદ અને રીઝવાન જરાય થાક્યા વગર દોડ્યા ને જુઓ મેઉની દેવીપૂજક વસાહતમાં રહેતા 21 પરિવારોના છાપરાંમાં લાઈટ આવી.

લાઈટ મેળવવી કેટલી મુશ્કેલ હતી એ સમજવા વિડીયો જોવો પડે.
