“How old are you Ba?”
“Must be 150 -200 years!”
“This made you laugh, right? I had laughed too. However, to Sedi Ma these numbers do not matter.”

Allow me to share an interesting episode of the time I had begun working to help these nomadic communities obtain their identity documents.
I was filling up the forms for Voter ID cards. I would make everyone sit a queue, come up when their turn came and fill up their details. Two women lead an elderly lady to me.
“Ben, her form needs to be filled up.”
“Ba, what is your age?” I inquired after filling up the other required details.
“I think it must be 30-35!!”
“Ba, it cannot be only 35!” I said as she was unable to walk on her own.
“Cannot be a year more than 35,” Ba replied confidently.
I know it is forbidden to ask women their age, but Ba was beyond comprehension.
Well, I called her eldest child and her son whose age was above 65 years for sure turned up. I asked him his age to which he replied, “almost 30!”
I stopped myself for arguing with him and called his eldest child…. That way I called upon Ba’s 4 generations and wrote her age to be 85 years.
After so many years Sedi Ma whom you see in the picture reminded me of that Ba. Sedi Ma stays in Surendranagar.
“Ma, there is a 50 years difference in 150-200!” I told Sedi Ma.
“How do I know that, but I know for sure we have settled here for 150 years. His father (Navghanbhai) and I have set up our caravan here.” she laughed and replied.
“Ma, you should be featured in Guniess Book!!”
“What would that be??”
કોરોનાનું વાંચી વાંચીને ટેન્શન થતું હોય તો ચાલો થોડું હસીએ... આમ પણ હસવું તબીયત માટે સારુ છે ને ઘેર બેઠા બેઠા કંટાળોય ઘણો આવતો હશે....
'તમને કેટલા વરસ થ્યા બા'
'થ્યા હશે દોઢસો બસો... 'સાંભળીને હસવું આવ્યું ને? મનેય એમ જ થયું. પણ સેદી માને આ વરસ સાથે સાચે કાંઈ લેવા દેવા નથી...
એક રસપ્રદ ઘટના કહુ... એ સમય હતો વિચરતી જાતિઓ સાથે કામ શરૃ કર્યાનો. હું એ વખતે આ જાતિઓને તેમની ઓળખના આધારો અપાવવાનું કરી રહી હતી.
રાજકોટ પાસેના પારેવડામાં હું તેમના મતદારકાર્ડના ફોર્મ ભરતી હતી. લોકોને એક લાઈનમાં બેસાડી વારાફરતી બોલાવી તેમના ફોર્મ ભરવાનું હું કરતી. આવામાં બે બહેનો એક માડીને ટેકો દઈને મારી પાસે લાવ્યા અને કહ્યું, બેન આમનું ફારમ બાકી સે...મે માડીને નામ પુછ્યું.. એમણે કહ્યું ને મે લખ્યું. એ પછી મે પુછ્યું મા ઉંમર શું થઈ...
એમણે કહ્યું, થ્યાં હસે તરી પાંતરી...બે જણાના ટેકે આવેલા માજીના તરી પાંતરી! મે કહ્યું મા આટલા નો થાય... તો એમણે કહ્યું, પાંતરીથી તો એકેય વધારે નઈ થ્યું હોય..
બહેનોની ઉંમર ના પુછાય એ વાત સાચી પણ આ માડી...
ખેર પછી તો મે એમના સૌથી મોટા સંતાનને બોલાવવા કહ્યું. એમનો દીકરો આવ્યો.. જેની ઉંમર લગભગ 65 ઉપર હશે.. એને પુછ્યું કે તમારી ઉંમર? તો એણે કહ્યું. તરી થ્યા હશે.. આખરે ઉંમર પુછવાનું મે રહેવા દીધુ અને એ ભાઈને એના સૌથી મોટા સંતાનને બોલાવવા કહ્યું, એ આવ્યો.. એની ઉંમર પુછવા કરતા એના સૌથી મોટા બાળકને બોલાવવા કહ્યું... આમ કરતા કરતા મે માડીની ચાર પેઢી જોઈ.. અને પછી માડીની ઉંમર પંચ્યાસી લખી...
એક એ માડી ને બીજા સેદીમાં જેમની સાથેનો ફોટો તમે પણ જોઈ શકો છો.. સેદી મા સુરેન્દ્રનગરમાં રહે છે. મે સેજીમાને કહ્યું દોઢસો અને બસ્સોમાં પચાસ વર્ષનો ફેર હોય મા?એ હસ્યા અને કહ્યું.. બળ્યું ઈ બધું ધ્યાન અમારાથી નો રે.. પણ અમારો વસાવટ આંયા સુરેન્દ્રનગરમાં દોઢસો બસો વરહનો... મે અને આના(નવઘણભાઈના) બાપાએ આંયા ગાડા ખોઈલાતા....
મે કહ્યું, મા તમારુ નામ તો ગ્રીનીસ બુકમા ંલખાવું જોવે... એમણે કહ્યું, ઈ વળી કઈ બલા...
હવે હું ઉંમરને લઈને ઝાઝી માથાકૂટ અમારા પરિવારોમાં નથી કરતી....
