Better late than never…..

“Ben, I have called up to share some good news with you, many like us might be calling you up every day asking for food. I too have called you for the same many a times and you have responded to those calls every time. But how long should we ask for food? We know our calls sadden you, they need you to send an appeal on the internet asking people to help. How many times will they all also help? People do not like to be asked repeatedly, right?  Hence, we have told the villagers here. Tell us if you have any work. We shall do it, we don’t want to beg for food. We also don’t want to call you up or the team members. Finally, a farmer has asked us to install pillars for a fence around his farm. Four families together finished the task, we earned Rs.10,500. The amount will last us 20-25 days!! We also need to understand that you have too many to take care of.”

I was delighted to hear Pratap Vansfoda narrate this with “You have too many to care for…” appealed me.

Since long we had been telling  Pratap and many like him to think and plan long term. They had to go beyond daily wages. They needed to develop the ability to buy and store food grains for their annual consumption and many such matters to lead a settled life.

“Ben, now we understand your emphasis on storing food for a year. We shall do the way you guide us!!”

As they say ‘better late than never…’

Whenever I am in and around Rajkot a stopover at Pratap’s for lunch is a norm. The image is with Pratap and his wife during one such lunch we had together.

'બેન આજે એક હારા હમાસાર દેવા ફોન કઈરો સે..

રોજ અમારા જેવા ઘણાય ખાવાની રાવ નાખવા હાટુ તમને કેતા હશે. મેય એવા જ ફોન કઈરા ને તમે વ્યવસ્થાય કીધી પણ માંગીને કેટલા દી ખાવું?

પાસુ અમારા ફોનથી દુઃખી થઈને તમે મદદ માટે નેટ માથે કોઈને લખો. ઈ વાંચીને ગામના મદદ કરે પણ ઈવડા ઈ લોકોને કાંય દર વખતે લખો ઈ ગમે નહીં.  એટલે આ ફેરા ગામનાને કહી જ દીધું કે, તમે કામ વતાડો જે કેશો ઈ કરીશું પણ હવે માંગીને નથ ખાવું અને બેનને કે સંસ્થાના કોઈ કાર્યકરને ફોનેય નથ કરવો...

આખરે ગામના જ એક ખેડૂએ એમના ખેતરની વાડ થાંભલાથી બનાવવાનું કામ અમને દીધુ.

અમે ચાર કંટબના જણે મળીને ઈ પુરુ કઈરુ. રૃપિયા 10,500 કમાયા. વીસ- પચી દાડા આમાંથી નહીરી જાહે બેન..

તમે કેટલાનું ધ્યાન રાખો, અમારેય હમજવું જોવેને.. '

ત્રાંબાથી પ્રતાપ વાંસફોડાએ ફોન પર આ વાત કરી. સાંભળીને રાજી થવાયું..

કેટલાનું ધ્યાન રાખો વાળી વાત બહુ ગમી..

પ્રતાપ અને એના જેવા વિચરતી જાતિના ઘણાને અમે છેલ્લા કેટલાય વખતથી રોજીંદી વ્યવસ્થાઓમાંથી બહાર નીકળી થોડાં લાંબા આયોજનો કરવાનું કહેતા.

જેમાં વરસનું રાશન ભરાવવાથી લઈને અન્ય ઘણીએ બાબતો હતી...

કેટલાક આ વાત સમજ્યા હતા પણ ઘણા નહોતા સમજતા આ લોકડાઉને જે નહોતા સમજતા એમને સમજાવી દીધા...

બેન હવે અનાજ ભરવાની વાત પર અમે સહમત છીએ.. તમે કહેશો એ પ્રમાણે કરીશું એમ હવે કહેતા થયા છે.

ચોલા દેર સે આયે પર આયે તો સહી...

રાજકોટ જવાનું થાય ત્યારે મોટાભાગે પ્રતાપના ત્યાં જ બપોરો કરવાનો થાય.. એ વખતે એની ને એની ઘરવાળી સાથે લેવાયેલી આ તસવીર ગૌરવથી અહીંયા મુકી રહી છું...
